There are other viable/good condi rune sets but perplexity is still prolly the best and engi makes great use of it.

I can’t really agree with Perplexity being the best. It often makes you waste important abilities just to get the confusion off and it can easily backfire with condition transfers. The condition duration also often goes to waste as we sit at 90% condi duration usually. So that means you waste 20% out of the 30%.

I find a much better option the Rune of Antitoxin which provides you with a reduction on condition duration on yourself. Since conditions are a strong counter versus us, having this reduction is very strong. The rune also allows for a immunity to the conditions chilled, cripple and immobilized when combined with lemongrass and leg mods. It also gives 5 stacks of Might (175 condi + power). Well, when you get hit by poison or torment but since in every fight there is usually someone hitting you with either poison or torment, this often procs.

Rune of the Aristocracy is also a very very strong option. Especially in group play this can give you a huge advantage over your enemies. The usual setup already has 4 blast finishers (5 if you count supply crate) and in combination with Alchemy 6 and the Might duration, you can get a ridiculous amount of might on your allies. Not even counting the 3 stacks of Might on self whenever you heal.

I agree that Runes of Perplexity are very strong and they can completely destroy anyone who does not pay attention but it is absolutely not the best out there in my opinion.

Soldier build for wvw

You can go full Soldier and do fine in roaming but you will get destroyed by people running a condition setup or celestial setup. You got a high amount of defense but that’s about it. For zerging, you can run a bomb orientated build in the melee train and do fine with Soldier.

I get that incendiary powder gives access to burn which is really powerful, but both the ranger and the guardian apply a lot of burning. So it feels like it’s a little bit of a waste. We’re trying to see how much burning uptime we’re maintaining right now.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to get rid of Incendiary Powder. Even if your Ranger and Guardian friends apply a lot of burning, the enemy can still have plenty of cleanse. And what about a 3v3 situation, I really doubt your Guardian and Ranger friends can keep burning on all three. I really don’t think it’s worth it giving up Incendiary Powder especially if you are getting Short Fuse for it instead.

Something els I wanted to say about the Engineer’s trait setup. I don’t find Automated Response effective. In your comp with Ranger, Guardian and Engineer. The Ranger will get focussed. If you got a Mesmer, the mesmer will get focussed. The Engineer is not the main focus in your comp and thus don’t get that much pressure on him. I think you are much better off going with Backpack Regenerator. Despite having no healing power, it’s a strong trait.

For the sigils I would go with Sigil of Cleansing atleast, we are vulnerable to conditions so a sigil that cleanses conditions on weapon swap is really a strong bonus. It’s a personal preference of mine atleast. The rune is.. well.. yeah.. if he wishes to play with that.. ok.

Adding Elixir gun seems to add some nice access to bleeding without needing to invest in crit chance at all. Clearly, we’re still doing a ton of experimenting and learning.

Excellent choice. I don’t understand why the Elixir Gun was not there in the first place but ok. Rocket Boots is a great ‘starter’ skill.

Just my thoughts on the setup. People already gave the answer to what you should get and that is a Guardian. A Shout Heal Celestial War or Healtank Ranger would also work.

Awesome montage, and I was actually baffled that the people getting slaughtered were from RoS, my home-server.
I guess I should join wvw more often again, since It’s really a shame that I missed the opportunity to meet and duel you.
I’ve also a set of ascended cele gear sitting in my bank, and I think it’s time that it comes to a use.

Btw, I’d like to know on which server (Aurora or FR) you’re actually playing, so I can look out for the next chance to meet and fight with/against you

Outrunning a zerg

I have two questions about this situation. One being could I started laying down bombs from Bomb Kit to slow their progress? Or is there a slight delay in running while you bend over to set the bomb? Any delay at all and they would have caught me.

Don’t do this. It will put you in-combat which will slow down your movement. The people you don’t hit with your bombs then have an easy time catching up to you.

Second question. I had Rocket Boots ready to go but I was hesitant to use them because of that very annoying stop that sometimes happens at the end of the blast off.

Yes, make use of Rocket Boots. It can sometimes bug out but in most cases it does not and it allows you to cover a large distance between you and the zerg.

What is up with Rocket Boots? Why the pause at the end of jump or the occasional angled jump?

It’s a little bit buggy sometimes but try to use it when the area is clear of things like trees, rocks and hills. Then it doesn’t bug out often.

Any other ideas of escape when you are way outnumbered?

While you are out of combat, you can slot Elixir S to give you stealth which allows you to escape safely (most of the time). You could even blast for Stealth in the Bomb Kit’s smoke bomb although be careful with that as they could catch up to you before you are able to stealth fully.

[Guide] Dodging the Skyhammer

Hellooo everyone,

I have seen many people still getting hit by the Skyhammer which is a cannon you can use in the PvP map called Skyhammer. A few patches ago, they made us able to dodge this cannon but when should you use dodge? right away? after 1 second? after 3 seconds?

I decided to create a video on this to help people understand when they have to dodge the cannon. I came up with two methods which both work well. The first one is counting and the second one is waiting for the sound the cannon makes when it shoots. I can understand that a lot already know when to dodge it but since I didn’t see a video/guide about this, I decided to create a video on it. I hope you like it!

Reduce flame jet retaliation damage by 90%

The autoattack of the Flamethrower is very weak anyways, no need to use it inside a WvW Zerg. You are much better off making use of the Bomb Kit (in the melee train) or Grenade Kit (when thrown at the right enemies which is not the melee train). I don’t think this ability should change like that although having some increased damage on the flame jet’s autoattack wouldn’t be that bad.

I believe there was an idea a while back of someone talking about a trait that reduces the damage you take by Retaliation. You can add it into Inventions as Grandmaster so if you wish to have it, you will lose on some damage but get that reduction making it a good one for a Zerg orientated Engineer that either uses the Grenade Kit or Flamethrower.

Let’s call it… Metal Armor? :P

Good flamethrower build?

Also running a build that uses the flamethrower in PvP now and it is working so kitten well. It’s basically a condi setup that uses the flamethrower instead of the Grenade Kit which allows me to stack a crazy amount of burning while also being able to decap points easily thanks to Air Blast.

Sure it doesn’t have that burst that the Grenade Kit provides but since the only gamemode at the moment is Conquest, being able to decap points is quite strong and the damage isn’t lacking either.

I haven’t yet included this setup in my build list though.

Hmm, I am not sure yet about an underwater section. I mean the underwater combat isn’t great for the Engineer and you want to avoid it as much as possible. I could include the speargun into the weapons section though which should be enough for underwater combat.

was just reading this over… since when is flamethrower stronger than bombkit?

If you are going for a Grenadier spec (pretty much the current ‘meta’ for PvE), you will be using the Flamethrower as the damage is higher with it than the Bomb Kit’s damage. This is because of Flame Blast (which also is a blast finisher). The autoattack from the Bomb Kit easily beats the damage from the Flamethrower but since the damage from the Grenade Kit beats the damage from the Bomb Kit (this is due to vulnerability), we will use the Flamethrower instead.

If you don’t have the Grenade Kit on your bar, the Bomb Kit will inflict more damage (as you will be using the autoattack from the bomb kit) than the Flamethrower does. Also, if you read about the flamethrower I mention that the damage is lower than that of the Grenade and Bomb Kit.

(-) The damage is quite low when you compare it to the Grenade Kit and Bomb Kit.

EDIT: it also highly depends on what type of content you play.

Cavalier vs Celestial

Damage: Celestial.
Survivability: Celestial and Cavalier are about even.

Cavalier has as mainstat Toughness (which is great) but it gives just a little bit of power and critical damage which you can’t use at all due to lack in precision. Celestial gives you vitality, toughness and healing power. Assuming you run backpack regenerator, you can make some strong use out of that healing power and the additional vitality and toughness is enough to make up for any lack of defense in comparison to Cavalier.

Also, why Lyssa runes? That’s really not a good choice for the Engineer. Hoelbrak runes are by far better than Lyssa runes.

SD with non-projectile skills works really bad usualy its great take 3 projectiles with low cd like tool kit, rifle turret, ram, analyze ect. Also for gear is better max out crit chance and crit dmg. Assassin is much better choice because with fury from med kit you can reach 100% crit chance. Runes probably Scholar are best for this because SB builds are about super fast onepinkn instakill or dead:-) Might on crit is also waste because you get that might after spike so definetly Force.

Why do you find Precision a more important stat than Power. As far as I know it is in almost every single situation better to increase Power instead of Precision. This table is old but as far as I know it is still relevant. It basically tells you that maxing power gives you higher returns. Now if we are playing PvE there are other things that are more important (vulnerability stacking) which benefit better from more precision.

In my experience it works better to have Full Berserker than Assassin. Sitting at a solid 55% crit chance is enough anyways (not counting food/fury gain).

Thats true in theory and in most builds it works that way because overall dps is higher but with SD if you dont crit with whole spike you mostly dont kill your opponent at all and after that you have almost nothing to defend yourself. I played SD build with zerk before for a long time and now with assassin is killing much easier.

I have played SD for a very long time now and I can safely say that you will take your encounters down easily with one burst when running full berserker. Of course, taking down a full PVT Guardian won’t work but that won’t work with any kind of burst. Also, SD isn’t an all or nothing spec. If you run with the Tool Kit and Rifle Turret you got yourself plenty of defense especially if you also slot Elixir Gun (or Utility Goggles).

I also doubt that a solid 60% (with buffs) or 80% with Fury (utility goggles/hidden flask) is not enough to critical hit most (if not all) attacks. But oh well, if Assassin gear works for you than that is fine.

@OP: you can have a look at my setup if you like and adjust it to your likings. Many players have been running that setup with great succes.

What this could be is a typical condition or celestial build as they generally have the tool kit in it as well as turrets (supply crate and healing turret). The builds also use a quite defensive amulet (Rabid and Celestial) which often is refered to as Bunker as well.

Other than that you got the turret builds with a Soldier amulet which can also have the Tool Kit slotted in combination with the Rifle and Rocket turret.

Magnetic Shield now being able to used while moving was really not needed. I don’t understand why they felt the need to change this. Seeing some cooldown reduction on the Slick Shoes is good but it’s not enough, it’s still not worth using.

first, great guide from just having skimmed over it. I am sure I will learn some new things as I am working on getting my ascended gear and putting together a good build for higher level fractals.

That said, one thing I looked for but did not see what runes and sigils. I know those arent engineer specific items, but would be really nice to have a gear section, even a brief one.

Will do that in the future as well as consumables. I am working on a lot more additional information which I will add to it as a ‘patch’.

Oh final note, I also run Hoelbrak on my knight/berserker setup but I do use Sigil of Air over Battle. This is because the additional burst helps me more than some extra power. Sigil of Battle also has to build up to reach the 6 stacks. I didn’t do the math (yet) but I believe a Sigil of Air/Fire will do more for you than Battle will.

Hmmm, that’s interesting. It’s hard to tell, since the additional power helps every single one of my attacks, while the fire/air sigil adds some damage every time it procs. I guess crit-chance is a factor here, because it determines how often those sigils proc (e.g. if they proc as soon as they are off cooldown). Then again, additional power also makes for higher damage with crits, so…

Would indeed be nice if someone would do the math for those things someday, haha.

Since you go with either Berserker or Knight your crit chance will always be around 50%. Fury (more crit chance) will positively effect Sigil of Air only.

Sigil of Air: We can then assume that every second attack will cause a proc from the sigil. Sigil of Air will do on average 1,000 damage (based on a full berserker spec with 2431 power versus an opponent with 2,5k armor) which will happen every 5ish seconds. Keep in mind that this ability is AoE and can bounce between multiple opponents, hitting the same guy twice. This ability can not crit.

Sigil of Battle: Let’s just say you got 6 stacks of Might from this Sigil. This won’t be the case all the time as it needs time to charge up and some battles end within 20 seconds. Jump Shot will do an additional 151,2 damage (which will be 341,7 when it crits). This already tells me that it’s nearly impossible for Sigil of Battle to come out on top DPS wise as you need to be dealing 1,000 more damage every 5 seconds compared to when you don’t have the might. For Blunderbuss it’s 303,7 if it crits which will be a total of 645,7 assuming you land Blunderbuss at the closest range possible and hit both your Jump Shot’s first and second attack. Even if you do manage to get above 1,000 damage.. then you have to wait for cooldowns again which drops your damage greatly. A full all in burst could give you more damage with Sigil of Battle but that’s still very unlikely.

My conclusion therefore is that Sigil of Air will outperform Sigil of Battle greatly as it is nearly impossible to keep dealing 1,000 more damage every 5 seconds with the additional Might. Also, you will not be sitting at those 6 stacks of Might that often especially since the boon can be stripped. Then again Sigil of Air’s lightning bolt can be avoided but since the cooldown on that ability is lower, you will not suffer too much because of it. Feel free to correct me if I made a mistake in any of my math.

I had an engineer-only guild running called The Engineer Legion [HGH] for several months. I closed it down because of lack of interests (as not everyone played Engineer non-stop) and because server-wide simply did not work well. Right now it could work as guilds can now be server-wide succesfully but I am currently happy with my current guild so I am not booting it up anytime soon.

It was fun though, we were doing Guild Missions with 10+ Engineers which would cause massive FPS drops for ourselves and anyone coming near us. Doing 5 Engi PvP and PvE was also quite succesful (no sarcasm).

With traits I would invest 2 points into Tools, removing 2 points out of Alchemy. Having reduced cooldowns on your toolbelt skills is kind of important and the 10% damage increase on your initial damage is also really strong. For armor I would go full zerker accesories and no a mix of Knight in it as well. You got enough defense with just the Knight armor. Rune choice could also be Hoelbrak instead of Pack to couter the condition meta in WvW. Other than that, all good.

And you are sure that I won’t need more armor than that?

That depends on how good you are yourself, I often run full berserker as well and do really quite well. If I run full berserker I take Utility Goggles instead of Elixir Gun though for the additional burst while not losing your stunbreaker.

If you know other people’s abilities well then you don’t need much armor at all as you are able to counter most of it with active defenses (blocks, dodge rolls). This is my build.

Hello there,

I went over the apps ‘GW2 WvW PPT’ and ‘GW2 Rushbox’ to see how they would work in WvW and if they are actually useful. I created a video on this which you can find right here!

In short, the apps are of good quality. They can really help out in both small scale and large scale. I personally use them for small scale as I am a Roamer (Wolfineer). What the app can do for you is tell you where the enemy is as you can see when they cap it as well as tell you if it’s of any use running to a specific camp as you can see the timers on the Supervisors.

So we could open a discussion, what are your experiences with these app? Do you find them useful or would you rather use millenium/mobile app?

Nope, I have always been an Engineer player. I don’t even have a Necro at 80 yet!

btt: good video to remind ppl what they loose if they waste skills. I often see the same mistakes in PvE too. Just wasting finishers or simply not using them. 1 out of 10 engineers even buff before a fight u.u

Indeed, it is just annoying to see Engineers waste their finishers randomly while they could have gotten an incredible boost to their damage or survivability. I even had a few comments in-game where people told me they weren’t even aware of what a blast finisher was and were happy I explained it.

Imo FT is replacing bomb kit very well for stacking might after the latest update.

The issue with the Flamethrower is that the Napalm ability (your firefield) has quite a long cooldown. In WvW/PvP that simply does not work well but in PvE it does.

This video is aimed at explaining the importance of blasting might and other tools that grant us might. Might is not important for only Engineer of course, it’s amazing buff for any profession really. The idea of this video is to teach the viewer to make good use of their blast finishers and not just use them for their effects, for example Big Ol Bomb is great damage in PvE and can stop someone in WvW/PvP (if it hits) but it is also a blast finisher so why not drop a firefield beneath it as well? That way even if it misses, you still get 3 stacks of might out of it.

The video is part of my Engineer Handbook which I am working on at the moment. That handbook will cover litteraly everything there is to the Engineer and will be released on my website in a couple of weeks (probably).

Condi removal :(

What I run in my usual condition damage spec is:

  • The Healing Turret which removes two conditions every 15-20 seconds.
  • The Elixir Gun’s super elixir which removes one condition every 20 seconds.
  • The Sigil of Cleansing which removes one condition every 9 seconds. (on weapon swap)
  • Transmute, which gives me immunity to one condition every 15 seconds and grants me a boon.

I also run Antitoxin runes to lower the duration of the conditions. That’s all I got and too be honest it’s plenty, you just have to manage it all a little bit more than with a Necro as a necro has a ton of condition removal.

@wolfar i check your videos often and don’t see many HgH of you using it. would you suggest it as a strong engi build? if so for group comps pvp comps etc?

It isn’t such a strong spec mainly because Kits just offer more utility in general. For example, Elixir B grants you a ton of boons and can potentially cleanse conditions with 409 while the Elixir Gun gives you a stunbreaker, a leap (and blast finisher), 1 condition removal, strong bleeding pressure, a cripple and a mass condition cleanse. It’s just that kits offer you with way more than the Elixirs do. HGH can be effective but 3kit will always be better.

personally ive found giver weapons to always be worse than [any pick with condi damage], the extra damage on the ticks outweighs small duration increases when its cleansed too often anyways.

for example, the 10 bleed stack from a cannon shot — when its 1200-1300 ticks a zerg will just wither, but 900-1000 is ignorable (and a power builds ~450 always is laughable).

but definitely swap out those soldier weapons for something more suited to a condi bombs build…

I assume he wanted to use it for roaming, in Zergs the conditions get cleansed really fast well in small scale it won’t get removed that quickly. Besides your non-damage dealing conditions will last for a longer duration. Having a long duration on cripple/immobilize/chilled/vulnerability/fear is really good in my opinion. I can see though what you mean but the difference isn’t THAT big. You won’t lose 300ish damage per second when you take Giver weapons over Rabid/Dire/Carrion weapons.

I suggest:

- Remove 4 out of Inventions, add 2 in Alchemy and 2 in Explosives OR Tools OR Firearms. Then grab Backpack Regen, Short Fuse (when you choose Explosives), Power Wrench (when you choose Tools) or Hair Trigger/Rifled Barrels (when you choose Firearms)
- Blood Injection should be changed to Protection Injection. Protection Injection will offer you a lot more than Blood Injection will.
- Weapon stats should be Giver, condition duration is good. Sigils are fine, perfect even.
- Armor choice is good, rune choice should be condi orientated. I suggest Antitoxin.
- Accesories should be Rabid so you are able to proc IP or Sharpshooter if you go for that reliably.
- Food should be Koi Cake + Master (or Adept) Tuning Crystal.

So basically, try this.

It’s the tooltip stating the wrong thing, that error has been in the game for a looooooong time unfortunately.

which of these builds would you recommend for someone who is relatively new to dungeons and/or pugging?

The Grenadier spec will serve you well. It’s one of the highest hitting damage specs for Dungeons currently.

love this shiznit makes me want to play my engi more. Would you use this build in PVE at all or run with nades and bombs?

The burst is strong but drops quickly in comparison to a Grenadier setup plus you will not be able to apply a ton of Vulnerability. I wouldn’t run this setup in PvE as I find the Grenadier setup a lot better both for Open World and Dungeons.

This video shows you the potential burst of Static Discharge, I burst down people like this every single day and people still don’t seem to learn. It’s great fun though as some drop litteraly within a second.

This video is for entertainment purposes only, the element of surprise is what got most of these people killed. I tried to make it so the clips fit the music perfectly while also showing off some great Static Discharge burst. Good fun for me and I hope also for you!
