Guys, they weren’t trying to be “naysayers”. They were just helping you suppress your expectations so you could be even more excited when the news confirmed your suspicions, and then you could come back on the forums and tell them off in triumphant fashion.

So really, they were on your side the whole time while trying to increase your excitement over the expansion, setting themselves up to be “bad guys” that you would defeat.

Expansion pack = end of living story?

I’m thinking the expansion will release in conjunction with living story season 3.

I mean, it wouldn’t make sense for them to continue the living story since they’ve kind of said and shown that the expansion stuff is supposed to pick up where season 2 left off.

Though that does make one wonder about how long it is to the release date as we might then experience a large dearth of content. They will need to fill the void with something (i.e. SAB).

Still many questions about how this will affect people who don’t buy the expansion and such and such… so many questions still.

he was not related to gw2 at all, but just a random interviewer guy of the pax south venue.

He wasn’t a random interviewer. That was Man vs Game (http://en-gb.twitch.tv/manvsgame) who is a very popular Twitch streamer.

But yeah, he was incredibly awkward. It would have been better if someone who actually had a clue about GW2 did the interview.

Yeah, MV & WP would’ve been way better to do that. Although, if they have an interviewer who doesn’t really know what important questions are, it doesn’t put them under pressure and they don’t have to say so many “we can’t speak about that right now” responses. So maybe they like it that way, I dunno.

Definitely makes it more interesting to watch when the interviewer is genuinely invested/interested/actively plays the game though.

No new race?!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yamsandjams.3267

Yamsandjams.3267

I don’t believe they’ll ever add a new race. It’s just too complicated to fit in with the way the personal story works and they’d have to do a lot of retrofitting of existing armor to get it to work with something like the tengu.

If ArenaNet let a little hard work get in the way of progress you’d all still be playing Guild Wars.

It’s a lot more work to add a new race instead of a new class though. For instance, you’d need much more new art assets to have proper customization options for the characters (the current tengu models in game are very “samey” and overall bland). You’d need to flesh out an entire new city so that they would have an equivalent home that all the other races have. They might need to redo animation assets for how the character moves. You’d need to get two new voice actors to record tons of audio.

And this is all before even considering how they’d meld into the whole personal story bit since they’ve more or less abandoned that entire model of doing things. Plus you’d end up having to create new NPCs all over the place so that the race is “represented” and not just so fringe part of the whole game (i.e. put a bunch of tengu in the pact, have some prominent tengu NPCs, &c.).

Meanwhile, a new profession is much more straightforward to add into the game, and will be much easier to meld into what already exists. One concern I have for this is that they might not give it any unique voice assets (due to the fact that they’d need to get the same voice actors as previously), but the class can still be functionally implemented and integrated without any major obstacles that you’d encounter with a new race.

But hey, who knows? Maybe they’re saving it for the second expansion.

Seems like a decent possibility to me. Mesmers do already have some “time magic” spells with time warp and whatever the focus line skill is called. Do races matter all that much?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yamsandjams.3267

Yamsandjams.3267

They don’t matter a ton. The primary thing they affect is your visual appearance.

But your choice of race will also affect your early game experience since you start in a different place, and the personal story missions up until about level 30 will be different based on your choice of race.

You also get specific racial utility/healing/elite skills, but they tend not to have very significant uses in general play, and you can’t use them in PvP. They’re mostly just for flavour or for weird sort of builds.

We don’t really know at this point if one’s race choice will have an impact on the new expansion content, but I imagine it won’t be that significant if it does.

Plus, if you’ve noticed the tengu models in game, they’re not designed to be used as a playable race. Poor customization points, and none of them really ever use actual equipment that the players have.

Would be nice to see a prominent tengu NPC though, maybe someone to tag along with DE2.0 or something.

in Crafting

Yamsandjams.3267

Yes, this is something that has been desperately needed in the game for a long time, but I doubt it’ll come in any time soon, if at all. If something is non-salvageable, it should specifically inform you as to this state as it may affect your purchasing decisions (i.e. buying equipment with WvW tokens).

In fact, I’m surprised it was never rolled in with the NPE as this is actual a valuable and curiously absent feature. Experienced players are more likely to know what is and isn’t salvageable (partly due to experiences of being screwed over), but new players will have no real idea until it bites them in the butt.

[New Patch]No field in new Currency Exchange.

Yamsandjams.3267

As far as I’m concerned, the only thing that needed to change was the way the UI worked. They had you specify the amount of gold you wanted to spend, and then it would tell you how many gems that would give you in return. It was always silly you weren’t able to simply specify a certain number of gems and have it tell you what the gold cost for that amount was. They did have the exchange rates posted, but it put unnecessary tedium onto the user’s lap.

Now they have changed the UI so it does just that, but now they’ve taken away the functionality to specify any amount other than fixed intervals. I can’t really understand what the reasoning for this is unless there’s some kind of secret internal reason, like some kind of exploit that needed covering up or something.

I can understand why a company would set up a real-virtual money exchange at fixed intervals, even if it can be used in anti-consumer fashions. But extending this to virtual-virtual currency under the banner of “ease and simplicity” smacks of execu-speak. I simply can’t see the logic behind, and would much prefer they revert to a system similar to the old system, except that you can specify the quantity of gems you want to purchase instead of having to offer up a certain amount of gold and be told how many gems you’ll get back.

Impossible to switch skills while ooc

Yamsandjams.3267

I experienced this in Fractals also. The Charr Siege fractal would not allow me or anyone else change our skills once in the fractal but we could once out or in the next fractal.

I would suggest that this might have something to do with ‘allied NPCs’ being considered ‘party members’, which would be a bug. Other than that, I would imagine that, PvE shares some kind of ‘cooldown’ with WvW OoC swaps in the light of new ‘balance’.

Eles using two elites one PvE might be a good place to start, but I’m not a Dev.

It seems more logical to conclude that it’s related to the “transformations” that occur in those two fractals. In the Ascalon fractal, you take on a charr form, and in the thaumanova fractal you take on an asuran form. In both instances, it’s impossible to swap skills even when OOC. Once you move to a different fractal that doesn’t feature one of these “transformations”, the problem goes away.

I haven’t done the dolphin fractal in a long time, but it would perhaps occur there as well.

I think there used to be a similar bug in AC path 3 with the ghost form preventing you from swapping skills, but AFAIK that has been long since resolved and hasn’t come back.

How to fix Mortar

180s duration lich form? That’s one of my recurring stress dreams… good god.

The most effective use I’ve ever seen of the mortar is some guy that would pop a skill or two off and then go back to fighting normally. Most often they’d just pop the #5 to cause some AoE CC, and maybe the chill field. They definitely wouldn’t just sit on it. This was in a dueling scenario though.

?/Torch build?

in Guardian

Posted by: Yamsandjams.3267

Yamsandjams.3267

I’ve used sword/torch in an experimental medi variant I made some time ago: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAsfRnkIS5QWNEeDB/QmIeoyOFbxZsqA46fIIyBA-TlSBwA003wVJBjHAgZlgROlCXVm1Vpwt9HGq+DgjUApAiYZE-w

The main idea was to use permeating wrath in conjunction with the flame legion runes. This would proc AoE burning onto a group of enemies, thus making the +7% damage bonus from the runes apply to all targets hit by the following AoE attacks (i.e. smite condition, whirling wrath, &c.). In conjunction with the torch, it could ensure multiple targets were constantly burning in order to ensure the +7% damage bonus would be in effect often.

However, I think it fails at being as effective at its job as your garden variety medi build is, but I’ve just stuck with it. In particular, the absence of traveler runes means you’re quite slow, although this can be somewhat remedied if you’re roaming with a group that can speed you up. It also forfeits a lot of other good traits in order to dump 30 into virtues, and I don’t think the trade-off is necessarily that good. And yes, I know you’re not supposed to use litany of wrath, but I was making this as a gimmick build, so it needed to have it.

That said, I feel torch is an appropriate alternative to a focus in your standard sword/focus+GS medi spec. Just use the same setup, but toss the focus for a torch. The zealot’s flame skill in particular can be extremely useful, especially if you’re running fiery wrath. The thrown portion of it can hit quite hard, and helps alleviate the issue that some people will run into with medi specs where they can’t quite keep up with people that are kiting them. Of course, the zealot’s fire projectile doesn’t really handle ledges well, which is a bit annoying (i.e. can’t throw it at someone if you’re above them on a wall). The cleansing flame is also useful as a form of mid-ranged AoE damage, although it’s definitely geared more towards a support-type role. I think if they gave cleansing flame some sort of buff, it would make the torch a much more competitive alternative to the focus for medi builds compared to what it is now.

Please help with Healing Engi Build

Yamsandjams.3267

The healing build I usually use is one of the following:

1. http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdEQJAqelUUpvrlcxdLseRSdBNyoslQGiRAqAIyEuQA-TxRDABU8gA0S5HU7PsieCdU/BgTIggKBJEw31A-e

The first is the variant I use in WvW. I don’t feel the bombs work as well in this format since it’s important for you to be mobile. While the build has potent healing, it can’t tank a ton of damage, so you don’t really want to be getting hit when you don’t have to. The rocket boots will do a lot more work for you than elixir infused bombs will, especially since everyone will be moving around a lot. It uses condition damage because I first used the build when incendiary powder was still an option for it, but you can always convert it into a cleric’s build. You could always be more offensive with an offhand pistol, but it’ll cost you some nice defensive utility as well as a blast finisher.

The second is what I would use in PvE/dungeons/fractals, although I rarely ever use this build for those purposes. It just has some trait changes for better damage and AoE healing with elixir infused bombs, and more of a power focus so that the damage is a little better. The toolkit is also not as necessary in PvE.

I’ve used sigil of leeching simply because it provides some self-sustain with extra damage, but I’m thinking the renewal or cleansing sigils might work out better.

As a rule of thumb, rampager is generally not worth it. If you want to go hybrid with a build that primarily focuses on condis, I generally find a carrion/rabid mix is the best way to go. You can add in some rampager too that if you need the precision for crit-procs, but I don’t find it to be worth it unless you somehow also have high crit damage, which is unlikely.

Yamsandjams.3267

10k hp ? are you sure you don’t get insta gibbed by other condi classes ?

I find I tend to struggle against very condi heavy classes with this build, even when using burning fire instead of blinding ashes. The signets just don’t fill in the spaces for condi removal (the signet of water passive tends to be of minor consequence), so it can be difficult to keep up with it in a protracted fight.

That’s why using ether renewal instead of signet of restoration can be quite helpful when you’re up against condition heavy classes. It can clean off a lot of conditions quite frequently, and you can even protect yourself with the earth attunement focus skills if you need to.

Of course in WvW you can always spec for a lot more dire gear so you have the vitality cushion to help out. sPvP just doesn’t have the stat variety to make up for the weakness. You could try using carrion for that purpose, but the lack of toughness could perhaps be a worse tradeoff.

Or perhaps it just has something to do with future boss encounters. Many previous updates have included new large-scale boss encounters (i.e. jungle wurm, marionette, battle for LA, &c.), so they might just be looking to add another person who’s experienced in designing and creating scenarios of that scale.

Yamsandjams.3267

The issue with infinite use food items is that it could cause potential crashes in the economy. I mean, look at something like lemongrass poultry soup. Everyone would want an endless one of that, so they’d make themselves one and never have anymore need for the ingredients or actual soup items from the trading post anymore. If they were going to implement such things, they’d either need to be quite arduous to craft or restricted in some other manner so that they don’t instantly deflate a bunch of stuff. It would also make things like food primers useless for people who craft the unlimited things, and I doubt they would want to potentially damage their own gem store sales.

Or perhaps instead they could put some kind of limiter on the unlimited versions of food, such as being able to only use it once per day, but always being able to have it every day. That way, there could still be demand for the actual food items if you wanted to continue to have the food buff for a longer duration. Of course, then they’d also have to consider the interaction with primers in this case, perhaps making them not work in conjunction with primers. However, maybe these restrictions would relegate the unlimited version into too much of a convenience roll and not actually provide enough novel value.

i like it a lot, but this is the kind of build that will only be viable as long as its new. If this build ever sees the light of meta, people will very fast learn to watch for the place traps animations and simply outplay you bcs you have no real utilities

A note on this:

If they dodge ambush or shadow trap, I believe it still triggers the effect. So in essence, you could use those ones to bait out the dodge and then try to goad them into the tripwire or needle trap. They’re all relatively low cooldown anyhow, so if you place them early enough, you can probably set them down again very quickly even if they’re dodged.

Any way to make P/P remotely viable?

People did make the trap build for p/p and p/d in the one thread. I haven’t tried it in WvW yet, but I figure if I’m going to be running the crappiest weapon set in the game, then I might as well be using some crappy utilities too.

So pistol + blinding powder still broken?

in Thief

Yamsandjams.3267

Another trick you can use is to forcibly sheath your weapons prior to stealthing. I don’t believe this is bound by default, but you can bind it in the keybinding menu in the options. For instance, I put mine on ctrl+z. Sometimes you have to spam it a bit, but it’ll force your character to put their weapons away, thus halting auto-attacks even if you’re in combat.

Of course, you can still run into the same issue of auto-revealing if you stealth while a projectile is in transit. It just helps you stop your auto-attack chain so the air is cleared of projectiles before stealthing.

I’ve noticed that when you’re stealthed, if you do certain abilities with a target, your character may resume their auto-attacks, even if the skill was not an offensive ability. It’s a similar case with how an engineer can drop a med pack with an enemy targeted, and swapping back to their weapons will initiate an auto-attack string even though they weren’t attacking the target to begin with. In those instances, you just want to ensure you have cleared your target selection (much like if you were using a leap skill to get away). UNFORTUNATELY, they’ve never created a bindable “detarget” command, so you have to click on the screen and hope a zerg or some random moa isn’t there.

Please put Mimic back the way it was.

in Mesmer

Posted by: Yamsandjams.3267

Yamsandjams.3267

Yup, the current mimic is just terrible. I tried it a few times, especially against theives. However it has nearly no impact. A blink, portal or anything else is just worth more. Think about arcane thievery – it’s about the same, but it feels just better. You really feel how you trade 3 condis for 3 boons. Better buff that a bit and change mimic to A REAL SKILL MIMIC!

Yeah. Or, you know, just give us the old Mimic back? Ok it didn’t really mimic in any meaningful way but 4 seconds of reflect is a pretty good skill. It just seems like such a random, massive change.

The thing is, mimic was never supposed to be a “block” skill. The idea behind it was to absorb enemy attacks and then use the attacks against the attackers with the follow up skill echo (which no one seems to ever acknowledge). I think that’s a cool idea, but the implementation just wasn’t there. So people just ended up using it as a block/reflect skill because that’s all it was really good for.

I think they should’ve stuck with the same concept, but just change the implementation. Or maybe they tried to do that behind the scenes, but just found it to be too strong, or still too niche to be worthwhile, or the concept was just not working. So I guess maybe they changed it to something that had a more general usefulness that can work in synergy with things like signet of inspiration.

If I have to allocate one space on my utilities to mimic or arcane thievery, it’ll be the latter. Mesmers generally need whatever they can get for condition clearing, and the ability to deny your enemy boons is often much more valuable than simply copying them, particularly when it comes to things like stability and protection. Having both mimic and arcane thievery means you have to not take various other valuable utilities, so I generally just let mimic sit on the bench.

If they made it copy and share the boons with allies, I think that could make it more useful, but then it would clash too much with signet of inspiration unless they changed the functionality on that.

Yeah, I’m not really sure what they’re going to do with cooking unless they introduce new ingredients into the game. Maybe with a newer area there’ll be stuff. Although we already had the new cacti stuff, but it’s just level 400 recipes.

A lot of the foods are already really powerful. I mean, what are we going to see? “Mists-infused Poultry Soup” with -100% condi duration and +300 vitality? Might as well change WvW into FvF (food vs food).

If you look at weaponsmithing, artificing, and huntsman, they all have consumable items, but they don’t go past level 400. Since the cooking produces nothing but consumables, it’s hard to think of what they would do if they wanted to go past 400. I guess they could make more dye pack combinations, but maybe they could come up with something else… I’m not really sure what though.

Better yet do dungeons and buy the dungeon weapons with extra tokens you get. You basically throw soul bound weapons in to get one exotic you can sell (this is part of the gold per hour dungeon run) The bonus is you may land a precursor.

I find it’s better to just salvage the exotic dungeon equipment to get inscriptions/insignias that will sell on the TP for a decent amount of cash. Even though it’s still RNG to get the insignia, you’re likely to get a them now and again, plus you’ll be building up ectos that can also be sold or used for other stuff, and it’ll also help you stock up on dark matter.

The fact of the matter is that buying a precursor directly from the TP is really the only reliable way to get one. Salvaging the exotic dungeon equipment to potentially build more cash is more likely to get you what you want in the long run instead of just dumping it all in the forge.

If you are just going to dump it in the forge, you might as well use the rares anyways. You can obtain a much higher volume, and it should still be more or less as unlikely to get a precursor as it is dumping exotics in.

It’s possible they’ll bring them back as a reward during some event in the future (i.e. maybe next time the crown pavilion is open), but we really just don’t know. IIRC, the recipes were account bound, so I don’t even think it’s possible for someone to sell one on the TP if they were still holding onto it.

That’s one of the reasons why it’s better to go for the Mistforged directly

If you go mistforged directly, does it unlock the non-mistforged skin for you as well? If not, that’s a bit lame.

and my fave part 4: This is a nice message to the devs, She is talking about how closed door game devs are about what they are working on and how they would let the community know what is going on. Be a bit more active with them and even listen to feed back.

It’s not always their call though. Personally, I think almost any game dev would like to be very open with what they’re doing. I would like that to. But it gets a bit more complicated when things are of the scope that an MMO like GW2 is, where you could potentially could have thousands upon thousands of voices coming at you from all angles. It might also be a bit tough when you have a ton of different projects going on, some of which end up getting scrapped for some reason, and then people getting kitten over it. There’s sometimes a point where you need to block out some of that stuff and not let too many cooks in the kitchen. But perhaps ANet does need to be a bit better at keeping people in the loop.

She makes it sound like game employees are so scared of losing their jobs by questioning established process that it wouldn’t be an environment you would want to work in anyway. Surely not everyone in the game’s industry is so spineless? Perhaps the ones that weren’t are now unemployed or running their own company. We see which one she chose.

It can be a rather unforgiving environment, although I don’t have personal experience as a game developer. Part of being an employee is following the established policies (assuming they’re ethical, of course). If you don’t want to do that, they’ll probably find another very talented person to take your place. You don’t just go to work and do whatever you want. Potentially not having a job is a trivial matter as people need the income to live. Starting a company is a massive undertaking with an extremely high rate of failure, so it’s not like that is a reasonable alternative for most individuals.

It’s why people always say you need to be “crazy” to work in game development. You often need to be very talented to have a specific set of skills to make it good, potentially work very crazy hours, and not get paid as much as an equally talented software developer/engineer who isn’t working for a game developer. The main thing that draws them to game development is their passion for it, which is important to them. As the end users, we often don’t see the ugly side of it.

In any case, it sounded like she had a lot of pent-up stress in the video and was mostly venting it out.

Have I ruined my pristine fractal relic?

It would be nice to have a confirmation dialogue, if for no other reason than to prevent accidental useage of the pristine relic when you meant to double-click on something else, or were trying to deposit it into the bank or something. It’s why they put confirmation dialogues on things like salvaging rares and exotics, or when buying particular expensive items.

In any case, there’s unfortunately no way to revert the process. Luckily they aren’t the hardest things to accumulate.

Mantra reset back to 2

It’s linked to hitting a level scaling transition. Whenever you cross a scaling boundary, it will drop the charges down from 3 to 2.

For instance, if you’re in an area where you’re scaled to level 20 and you cross a transition to a level 19 zone (or 21), it will drop your charges from 3 to 2.

A similar bug is what causes necro minions to spontaneously die.

It shouldn’t be happening in WvW or sPvP, so your level scaling won’t be changing. If it is, then there’s probably some other cause.

If they’re going to buff one of HaO or TU, it’ll be HaO. As far as I’m concerned, TU has always been in a good place for what it offers. Buffing that thing up could easily make strong build too strong.
