Nothing. I think that every form of focused DPS ranged weapon on Thief is doomed to be useless.
The discussion was over, dead and buried until you decided to chime in. OP was onto something, as it turns out. Rifles coming.
It is speculation that thieves are getting rifles. Remember that. As much as we all want rifles however, we shouldn’t be surprised if it happens because anything is possible with updates.
Although, OP did lay out a raw design for anet which would saved them planning time granted that anet is giving thieves rifles. It wouldn’t be wrong to assume that anet has their own version of OP’s idea in the making.
I don’t want rifles, I think it will be a weird, gimmicky weapon set, ill suited for fast paced PvP. It will be okay in PvE, probably, but it will still suck compared to D/D backstab spam. The question is what will we lose speccing into the rifle using sub-class? If it’s indeed a rifle and not a melee weapon, I fear that the second spec will simply never be touched by any Thief.
What I want is not a new weapon, but a revision of useless abilities like traps and venoms.
If you want fast pace play DD, DP, or SP, they whole point of GW2 profession is to have variable play styles that players can choose, want to be an assassin thief choose DD or DP,stealth and poisons, wanna be a duelist there’s SP and SD, wanna be a scout there’s Sb and traps of all kinds to choose.
I would love to be a long range assassin that hits in the shadows and snipes from after it won’t be as fast paced and will suck when fighting more than one enemy but it would provide long range dps support like defending a fort or dealing with problem enemies from a distance, it would open a whole new style of combat that with be unique to thieves.
Engineer can do that with the mortar elite. Actually, anybody can do it with siege weapons. This type of weapon would suck in tPvP and PvE, because the first one has LoS and the second one needs DPS and not burst.
And I highly doubt they’d give a target based weapon more than 1500 range at the very maximum anyway.

Maybe a trait that removes the bleeding component, but increases the direct damage? Or maybe make it a two-stage skill with Death Blossom being the first stage and the new Death Bloom dealing increased physical damage?
Too many Thief skills need buffs or redesigns though. Most Venoms, most Traps, most Tricks, P/P…
Gonna be Rifle, deal with it. Yeah, it’s probably going to be something gimmicky and useless, but… well, that’s life.
Old style beta testing should be burn in hell. If you want feedback then get the feedback from the one who want to buy your game and who is playing your game.
Public Beta is always the best way to test your game.
You mean those kind of modern betas where 90% of the people have no actual interest in testing, but just play it in order to play it before everyone else, and thus the actual amounts of testing becomes very limited which makes the product suffer in the long term?
You can’t exactly expect people to work for you for free. You have to build the testing process around the idea of people wanting to play, not work. Therefore, you have small focus tests where people stress test small parts of the game, while you observe them.
There are big concerns regarding the possible power creep if those specs are flat out better than the base classes. But if they’re not better than the meta specs, why use them at all? GW2 has too few skills and a lot of them are completely useless, so this spec idea can miss completely if it’s overshadowed by the few “OP” abilities out there.
Logan is an interesting character and he doesn’t whine all that much. Troy Baker does a phenomenal job with him too.
It’s interesting to see where Logan will end up. I think he will get over Jennah at one point, maybe even quit the military and go back to being a vagabond.
Think of it like P/P that doesn’t suck. High single target ranged DPS on an incredibly squishy character with high mobility is a match made in heaven.
Rifle can always end up blowing, of course, and we will never use our Specialization.
Personally, I think it will be some sort of a slow aiming long range weapon that allows you to stay in stealth for a long time without moving. It will be useless for anything but WvW where you one-shot Zerkers with it.
Didn’t they say there will be no new weapons? The thing Rytlock’s using in the trailer is just a staff.
If there is only one specialization, then it isn’t a specialization.
Specialization implies choice. And please don’t come with “you can choose not to use the specialization, so you do have choice”. For real…
Thats like saying there are different pvp modes to choose from right now. You can choose between playing conquest, and not playing conquest. What a great assortment of choices!
It ain’t so if that Specialization comes with downsides compared to the base class. E.g. if Druid can no longer use Longbow.
Never buy pre-built PCs. Ever. Building PCs is way easier than it used to be.
He could be the Master of Whispers, who’s identity is probably the biggest secret in Tyria. The whole conspiracy is also their style. It would certainly explain why he’s so well informed.
The six Gods disappear from the world. Shortly after the Elder Dragons start becoming an imminent threat to Tyria. Six Gods, six Dragons.
Grenth, the God of Death. Zhaitan, the Dragon of Decay.
Balthazar, the God of Battle and Fire. Primordus, the Dragon of Fire.
Melandru, the Goddess of Nature. Mordremoth, the Dragon of Jungle, plants.
This is where it gets a bit fuzzy.
Kralkatorrik. The crystal Dragon with the power to corrupt everything it touches. I suppose he could be the perverse version of Dwayna, the Goddess of healing and life.
Jormag. Ice Dragon. Well, ice is the domain of Grenth, but Grenth clearly must be Zhaitan.
Finally, the enigmatic “deep sea dragon”. Water is Lyssa’s element, so let’s put her in charge here.
We’re left with Kormir, the only human deity that doesn’t command a primal element. Instead, she’s the goddess of “truth, justice and spirit”. Still doesn’t sound like Jormag. I guess we can connect her to Kralkatorric instead, since his power “corrupts the spirit” and put Dwayna together with Jormag, because she controls water and Jormag is ice, which is solid water… yeah.
So, this theory is full of holes, obviously. But still, could be it that the Exodus of the Gods wasn’t the result of the “humanity’s folly”, but some sort of a sinister cycle, where Gods become the Elder Dragons and consume Tyria’s magic to maintain their godly powers and later they ascend again, returning as the Pantheon?
S Tier:
- Necro
A Tier:
S/D Perma-dodge Thief (their damage is fine, their defenses are not. Only remotely conterable by AoE condi spam and AI spam, which managed to do damage while the player is kiting away)
CC Healing Signet Warrior (very durable, spams CC and high damage. Unsuspecting Foe needs nerfing, base Healing Signet needs to come down, but get buffed in terms of scaling)
Bunker Guardian (unkillable, passive, provides powerful support)
Engineer (Supply Drop is crazy OP, too much of everything. All kinds of long-sustainable and permanent boons, Invulnerability, crazy sustain, Automated Response, all kinds of spammable condis, AI damage, high CC, blocks, escapes, engages… stealth. You name it, Engie has it)
+ Spirit Ranger (still too easy and too strong, AI does all the work, can rez himself and provides very strong support. Passively, of course)
B Tier:
- Non-CC Warrior w/o Healing Signet (same old Warrior, but Zerker Stance and Cleansing Ire prevent them from falling into C tier in the current meta)
+ P/D Thief (shuts down melee builds, but too predictable, has too little defenses and dies from blind-fire AoE condis. Still, capable of high damage and sustain. Would be A tier if not for lovely Necros and AI co.)
+ Mesmer (will be A Tier with Necros nerfed. AI damage, range, burst, mobility, insane survivability in glass builds through Invulnerability and stealth. Needs to be nerfed in the same patch that nerfs the Necro)
- Elementalist (difficult to play, but capable of huge burst and Bunker-ability; countered by sure-hit Condi spam and AI meta, while having none of its own. Would be B+ or even A if skill floor wasn’t so high)
C Tier:
+ D/D Thief (same as P/D, but doesn’t secure stomps as well and doesn’t hard counter builds that need to actually hit their targets. Huge damage capability and sustain is still there, Would be B Tier, if wasn’t countered by everything)
Thief in any other build (P/P is weak and hard-countered by clutter, which is the name of the game, Condi-spam doesn’t provide nearly enough pressure and exposes you to damage, S/P is slow and doesn’t deal enough damage, plus suffers greatly from lag. Weird builds like double SB are just annoyance, but not real threat)
Power Ranger
+ Roamer/DPS Guardian (almost out of the Peasant Tier, but too squishy and provides zero support when going for any kind of respectable pressure. And even then, the damage isn’t very good)
Spirit Weapon Guardian (deliberately made to be awful by A-net. Weak summons that you need to sink 40 trait points into to make usable. And then they suck. Or they would suck, but they can’t, because they’re dead. They provide no support to speak of, unlike Spirits.)
There are a few thousand people playing it. That’s pretty much nothing. There are no good new non-Asian MMOs out there, so we’re stuck with this for the time being. At least it’s sub-free.
Conditions happen to be on AI, passive and sure-hit AoE skills, plus they’re not hard-countered by Protection.
Any word on if this rune set will be available in sPvP?
Of course not.
Stobes is laughing because Fortus hasn’t played against any good DPS guards.
There are no good DPS guards. Unless you’re talking WvW, where everybody is a champ.
please don’t. ATM hotjoin is the best of pvp. Easy daily and no queue.
If Hotjoin is removed and everybody moves to SoloQ, queues will disappear.
It’s like another stability… :/ WHICH you cannot strip or steal…
Wrong. It does not prevent stun/daze/KD.
well it did when i tried to stun a warrior with shieldbash .. and no he had no stability
You must have missed. It doesn’t prevent non-condi effects.
I don’t know. I’ve had quite a bit of success as a condi Warrior lately. Sure, it’s not an ideal setup to bring into group sPvP, where everyone has a defined role, but just for running around in SoloQ and lighting people up? It’s great.
Eating Pin Down while roasting on my fire pan AoE pretty much ends a lot of Thieves for me. Sure, good Thieves will dance in and out, dodging my big attacks, but even they can’t avoid the burning or chew through my 2k Tuf and regeneration so easily.
Mesmers… I don’t know. Been fine against them. Again, good ones will counter my condi bombs and just perma stealth somewhere away from the fire, while their clones do all the work, but if I manage to survive through their cooldowns and catch them with Pin Down/Flurry they are in trouble.
Eles, on the other hand, been giving me a bit of trouble with their huge condi cleansing and mobility.
Starting to regret that i destroyed my melandru runes.
Its kind of silly and retaliation and confusion should just be removed from the game, friggin hate stuff that forces people NOT to fight. Cant honestly see the fun in it..
It doesn’t really force you not to fight, because it’s up all the time, especially Retal. It’s just yet another source of passive unavoidable damage that just happens and you can do nothing about it.
If they simply had a trait like the necro minion trait for 50% increased hp I think it would make all the difference in the world. Wouldn’t make them op, but would keep them from dying from a strong breeze. Also, I think the spirit bow, with it’s longer cd, and the fact it doesn’t actually attack enemies, only removes debuffs from you/heals a small amount in an area, it should be reverted back to no HP bar. It makes no sense for a non-combat entity to be killable. It’s condition removal is slow, it’s heals are “meh”, they’re good cover heals to top off, that’s about it. It’s not going to save you from dying in a pinch.
It would HAVE to be a 30 Virtue trait.
A guardian protects a piece of land.
He dies to evil magic, poison and bleeds to death.
He dies to a bunch of glowing trees.
He sometimes makes Warriors kill themselves while hitting him because of the magical feedback aura.
If “passive play” is your issue with phantasms, you should also be calling for nerfs to every AI in the game (minions, spirits, spirit weapons, pets, etc). You should also be requesting nerfs to all of the passive benefits Thieves get in stealth. There’s far more passive play in this game than just phantasms. It’s not an issue specific to them. Really, you should be posting in one of the many topics that already exist that are complaining about passive benefits and AI. I fail to see why a topic specific to phantasms was necessary, especially considering Mesmers are bottom tier in the meta right now and phantasm builds have never been popular in tPvP anyway. Phantasm builds are a good hotjoin and 1v1 troll build, but they’re not meta. Phantams in shatter builds only ever get one hit off before being shattered and have greatly reduced damaged due to no trait investments.
Ergo, I fail to see the issue. You’re justified in wanting the passive play in this game to be changed, but not in creating a topic targeting just a single facet of said play, which isn’t even the bulk of the issue right now (Spirit Rangers are).
Totaly agree with you. There is much passive (no skill) play in this game.
That’s what the game is build around. It’s not going away, as it would require a massive overhaul. They can either nerf all AI damage to the point of uselessness, so it’s a non-factor or just… do nothing and let those few dozen people who still PvP just do their thing, who cares.
TL;DR The equivalent of that for other classes would be:
Make all Pet summons in combat only.
Make all Elemental weapon/Kit Summons in combat Only.
Make Engineer Turret casts dodgeable,
Make Necromancer minion casts dodgeable.
Make Guardian Weapon Summon casts Dodgeable.
Make Ranger Pet summons and Spirit summons dodgeable
Okay, but only if your PZerker hits for 800 like my Sword of Wrath. That would be balanced, right?
I hope this is true.
Mesmers are very hard to kill, near perma invul + stealth + teleport + cc + moa + etc… Like a God :/Ilusionist duelist hits harder than thief unload. Swordman and berserker do not stay far. Spatial surge taking same damage as evicerate, and without cooldown.
Actually a mesmer can easily change the tide of battle :/
May be i am the supreme noob here because i never win an mesme.
NEVER!
Mesmer is so OP that it’s actually almost viable as a direct damage class in a condi meta.
It’s massively overpowered, just out of its element. What it needs is nerfs, coming together with nerfs to conditions.
l2p, stunbreak, teleport, evade, blind, block, chill, cripple, fear, stability, so many counterplay to that mace build. just outplay the opponent and dont go into a fight thinking you will just faceroll that warrior. your fault. i have no problems at all to fight such warriors with my thief, warrior, mesmer or guardian.
please share what class has stunbreak, teleport, evade, blind, block, chill, cripple, fear, stability. I’d really like to know this god tier class.
its called the thief class
Or Necro.
All classes are like this.
There are just Thief players who learned to abuse the game and permadodge and those who didn’t. It’s learning curve and some people get there earlier than others. There are also those who refuse to abuse the system, because it’s so cheesy and feels like exploiting, plus requires no actual skill.
Dumbest idea ever. Period.
GS offers so much mobility and damage thakittens a great weapon in general to use./endthread
You have a great name.
It’s very hit and miss. Or block and miss, I should say.
I’d play any dps guard that doesn’t require a staff. Staff is boring :S
Come on, Staff is genius. Swiftness, “you shall not pass”, and 12 stacks of Might. TWELVE. FOR EVERYONE.
Plus it’s pretty useful against Phantasm Mesmers or Thieves with summons.
Never build Condi on the Warrior.
Also, never use Flurry, cancel it immediately to get the Immob and move along.
Jesus christ what is this obsession with modes?
If the combat itself doesnt keep you interested, new modes will only have the “release” effect for you, after that you realise new modes dont change the combat that you didnt like in the first place.
Game mods, which are maps and rulesets, surely do affect combat. If the game isn’t about standing in tight spots and running around as quickly as you can to stand in the other tight spots, mobility and AoE suddenly become less valuable, which might make games about burst, avoidance and CC, rather than spamming AoE dots. At least it’s a shift.
+1 to this but please also dont forget to buff mesmer and ele with some of the tipps u get from the community
If they buff Mesmer they should also nerf it hard, because it’s the best 1v1 class right now, with absolutely huge survivability and easy-mode AI damage.
Pokemon isn’t so bad. It’s a surprisingly deep mechanics for a kiddie game, that’s why many sad, sad adults keep playing it. Me included.
Warriors can only apply bleeding and burning and some tormet (only offhand sword) .
We cant spam it.Remove conditions after you got pin downed + sword + impale maby Riposte (if you do see a warrior blocking with a sword > dont attack ? .. you dont range a thief using dagger strom..
So after you removed it:
pin down 25 sec cooldown
Impale 15 sec cooldown
Riposte 15sec cooldown (dont attack it)Now your free to lock him down > burst
I dont think this is a warrior problem, if you have a hard time against a condition warrior i would love to see you going down on necro/engies spamming it.
Lets not forget the blind, huge fire aoe, hard hitting bow aoe, and the pin down/flurry combo, all with the mobility of sword 2 if needed, if you dont have removal thats more than enough. plus if i get a chance to actually burst it does squat to their high toughness/armor/health and regens back up in about 5 seconds. The hardest ive hit one of them is for 6-7k with a full gc kill shot, not enough to even make them flinch
You can actually burst necros/engies and they might actually have to get defensive but warriors no, its all offense while barely having to worry about defense at all.
You’re just blatantly lying at this point.
Warriors have more defense than Engies? Than Necros with Plague Form up? Lol, get out.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Its hard to believe you are using knight gear. 14k bses are only possible on light armored glass cannons. Or that thief had like 20 stacks of might.
Shadow Refuge alone gives close to that with a SA build.
I find Bunker Guardian to be very boring and mindless to play. Is there any way to play Guardian as some sort of a roamer or bunker/team fighter/roamer hybrid, like all those Necros, Engies and Spirit Rangers? Or you will be too much of a deadweight for the team?
Honestly, I’m fine with the skill as is. When paired with the trait Missile Reflect it’s great for punishing ranged fighters like Rangers and Engis. As for the attack itself it’s the nature of all counter skills to be dodge-able after the block is triggered. When it does hit it can deal a good amount of damage for a skill on a 8-10 second CD.
Mace is a strong weapon currently and any sort of buff to it would cause Hunter and Excalibur to cry even more…so on second thought let’s buff it.
Guardian’s Protector’s Strike almost never misses.
Drop Black Powder. You’re now immune to Warrior. Other than that just hit him and dodge frantically when he gets close.
This suggestion is so silly…
Oh, it’s you, Daecollo.
Awesome collection of bandaids and self-delusions, but at the end of the day, the OP’s statement reamins true. Thieves don’t have any 1200 range attack.
Look, I have lots of money in the bank, a lovely wife that loves me, a nice directive job, and lots of people more than willing to fulfill/getting absolutely all I wish… But I have no arms…. You may say “You don’t need arms, man”… But you know what? I’d like just to have them….
That would be fine. But it’s a game. You can’t have it all, otherwise it would trivialize content. Not to mention that it would also ruin the competitive aspect.
wouldn’t that make guards to hard to kill ?
Nope. Guardians have very few blast finishers. This would instead make Engies harder to kill.
Guardian has the best Blast finisher in the game. Mighty Blow. And it’s on a bunker weapon too.
So, no. Bad idea.
Condition duration reduction needs to be more prevalent as a stat imo.
It’s common knowledge that taken HS damage reduces proportionally to the amount of skill you possess. Personally, I get hit for 2k damage at most nowadays. In fact, I’m just a few pro-points away from being able to ignore spammable no-brain blind fields from Thieves.
I guess Thieves were right! We just need to l2p.
