Elite mobs in open world now

in Tower of Nightmares

Konig already made what I would have suggested. Give Elites a Loot Bag equivalent to the non-Exotic loot bag variant of what would drop from Champions. For instance, killing a Champion in Queensdale can net you an Exotic loot bag or a white loot bag. Killing an Elite in Queensdale would always give you a white loot bag. (IIRC, lower tier loot bags always contain some coin, a green item, and a small amount of basic or fine crafting materials.)

This would make Elites a good target for players looking to pad out their crafting materials, while also giving small groups of players a better challenge without necessarily throwing a Champion at them.

I’d prefer it if the mobs didn’t go into downed state myself. It’s fun for a while, but then it just starts to drag the fights out. Plus, as some people have mentioned, it’s a bit immersion breaking to see dozens of players running around stomping enemies with giant 8-bit explosions, bunny flags, laser cannons, cow rears and what-not.

That said, I don’t mind if a few special enemies go into downed state as a special mechanic (like for a boss fight). It’s just that having ALL enemies have it gets tedious. (And it also feels weird that the Nightmare Courtiers get it, but the Krait don’t. What, are the Krait somehow inferior for not being humanoids? Do they just give up and die faster?)

EDIT: Although, what Atlas suggested above is a good idea. Maybe only have Elites and Champions have a FINISH HIM! requirement. I think Vets should still not have the requirement.

Thanks for the clarification, Matthew. It would have been nice to be able to do the story instance as a group, but I can understand how technical reasons may have meant that it’s not possible in this instance.

Still, I’m a bit puzzled as to why you can’t re-enter the instance by talking to Marjory with a group.

From personal experience and gathering info, it seems that:

1. Only Veterans and Champions can have the Toxic Spores debuff, according to Autumn’s post above. (Unknown if Elites can have it too.)

2. Only Veterans and Champions that spawn during events have a chance to have the Toxic Spores debuff. (Unknown if this is true, as I have not checked many random Vets, like Oakhearts, out in the world to see if they have it.)

3. The Toxic Spores debuff doesn’t apply automatically to creatures when they are spawned. It appears about 1 minute after the creature is spawned. Therefore, it’s actually in your interest to hold off on killing an enemy after it first spawns to see if the debuff shows up (seems to be a 50/50 chance).

4. Reports have claimed that the Frostgorge Champ train never spawns creatures with the debuff. However, it is unknown if this is because Frostgorge Sound is too far away from Kessex Hills, or whether people are killing the Frostgorge Champs too quickly before the debuff has a chance to go on them. When I took part in a Scarlet invasion in Fields of Ruin last night, I didn’t see any Champs/Vets with the debuff, although some others in the map claimed to have seen them.

With all of the info above in mind, it seems that the best way to get the achievement is to visit maps that have plenty of events that spawn Veterans and Champs during events. When they spawn, wait a minute or so to see if the debuff shows up before killing them.

I’m sure that the Krait Tower will stay, BUT that after we complete this latest phase, Kessex Hills will at least return to a semblance of its former beauty. Having the entire zone be permanently spore-choked and dark would just make lots of the DE’s and Hearts make little sense. (Why would the Seraph and Centaurs continue to war while there’s a poison factory spewing toxins into the air RIGHT NEXT TO THEM? Similarly, the Toxic Alliance is happily hacking up any bandits, Risen and other unfortunate creatures in the vicinity. I don’t know about you, but if I was a bandit, I’d be getting out of there post-haste.)

I’d prefer it if the mobs didn’t go into downed state myself. It’s fun for a while, but then it just starts to drag the fights out. Plus, I got a nasty surprise the first time I got downed while fighting them. “kitten … But the enemy is almost dead, I’ll just kill him and rally off him. … What the heck? He’s downed TOO?”

And of course, the enemies killed me since downing an enemy doesn’t count as a kill for a rally.

That said, I don’t mind if a few special enemies go into downed state as a special mechanic (like for a boss fight). It’s just that having ALL enemies have it gets tedious. (And it also feels weird that the Nightmare Courtiers get it, but the Krait don’t. What, are the Krait somehow inferior?)

Anet's stance on dungeon selling?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

No, that’s not a solution, that’s just making the problem worse. One of the reasons why people pay for Arah runs is because they need the tokens but because PUGs are bad, or they know they are bad themselves and can’t complete the content, or it will take them a long time. So they just pay someone else to do it. Making content even easier is just going to enhance that problem.

These players do it because there’s no other way for them to get the tokens they need. If dungeon gear could be bought/sold on the TP, I’m betting it would almost entirely eliminate the desire for runs altogether. (I say almost because I’m sure there are people who want to get runs for the Dungeon Master title.)

The average GW2 player base is already terrible at the game because the game doesn’t promote skilled gameplay. When running around a map spamming your autoattack running any throw-on trash build you can come up with is more rewarding than PUGing dungeons and about equally rewarding to running dungeons in an organized group setting, there is no incentive to become a better player. Which is why most people in this game are so bad at it.

Is that really so bad though? These are players who, like you and me, log on to kill stuff, take their loot and buy shinies. If they paid their $50 entry fee like we did, why should we deny them the chance to have fun too just because they’re not as skilled as us?

Dungeons were meant for organized groups, not for everyday joes. They are easy enough so every day joes can complete them, but they’re going to have a harder time doing so.

This I actually agree with you about. Most of the dungeons are perfectly completable by average joes with a basic grasp of GW2 skills. And what do you know, you never see anybody selling runs for AC or CoF! It’s only the harder dungeons like Arah that get the sellers. Doesn’t that say something to you?

Anet's stance on dungeon selling?

Zaxares.5419

Personally, I don’t like it. If you’re just going to pay someone to drive you around town, why do you even own a car? It just reminds me of those guys who pay people to fix their cars.

See how that makes no sense at all? Paying a taxi driver when you don’t have a car doesn’t mean that you can’t own a car and drive it on your own time.

Well, if you WERE going to pay someone to drive you around, why DO you own a car? It would just be a waste of money.

Besides, the analogy doesn’t match. You buy a game to play it for the experience. Buying a game and then paying someone to play the game for you defeats that purpose. (And because I know the counter-argument that’s coming is that some people do dungeons to get the dungeon gear, then I say allow dungeon gear to be sold on the TP if you want the look, but don’t like doing dungeons.)

I don’t see how solo/duo’ing paths and selling them is related to speedclears at all.

Solo/duo’ing paths and selling runs are two entirely separate things. My post above deals only with the latter. I have no issue with players who like solo’ing content; if they are capable of doing so, all the more power to them. I applaud them for their skill (provided they aren’t using exploits, of course).

However, selling runs is effectively speedclearing. To quote ANet’s reason for attempting to stop speedclears: “we dislike our end-game content being trivialised”. Is that not what selling runs is?

But they never said they don’t like path selling. Especially not in GW1, where there was an entire town dedicated to it (Doomlore Shrine) for dungeon runs.

I expect that ANet didn’t take action at that point because GW1 was nearing their end of its lifecycle. GW2 was already well into development; there was no point in pouring more resources into attempting to fix something that players would just find a way to get around again (as shown by UW).

Also, the fix to UW had absolutely nothing to do with running people. It had to do with the fact that 7-8min UW was totally broken. And the funniest part was how the people crying for SC nerfs were the ones who weren’t able to complete UW after the change.

Again, it was an attempt to fix speedclears. Which in itself was trying to stop “end-game content being trivialised”. And like I said in my original post, their solution didn’t fix the problem because it did not address the core issue of most players being unable to complete it without resorting to gimmicky builds. It went like this:

1. UW is hard, end-game content. Tough, but doable by standard PUGs if they are decent and know what to do.
2. Players discover a way to farm UW using 55 monks and SS necros. Everybody swarms to this new method because it’s faster and easier.
3. ANet attempts to fix this by making UW harder. They achieve some success, but less-skilled players can no longer complete UW normally.
4. New UW farming methods are discovered. Everybody swarms to this new method, including the previous normal players because they can no longer complete UW.
5. ANet makes UW harder again. Normal players now cannot complete UW at all without using gimmicky builds (which ironically are partially based off the speedclear builds).
6. The farmers find yet more ways around the farm blocks.
7. ANet gives up, leaving speedclears as the only viable way for PUGs to complete UW.

It’s a vicious cycle that just made it worse for normal players each time. What ANet should have done is addressed the core reason of why people were farming UW in the first place, which was that it was one of the best places to earn money.

You can see this happening right now in GW2 too. There’s non-stop zerg trains farming the Champions in Queensdale and Frostgorge Sound. Why? Because it’s one of the easiest and quickest way to earn money. Players automatically gravitate to whatever is the quickest and easiest way of achieving their goals. If ANet wants to avoid that, they need to spread out the rewards enough so that there are many avenues to achieve a player’s end goals, all of which are more or less equal.

Zaxares.5419

Personally, I don’t like it. If you’re just going to pay someone to do content for you, why are you even playing the game? It just reminds me of those guys who pay gold farmers to level up their characters.

And ANet doesn’t really like it either, from past experience. They dislike speed-running (and running in general), given that they attempted several times to stop UW speed clears and other such tactics. However, their fixes only succeeded in making the content hard enough that normal groups stopped trying altogether, leaving the runners and other gimmicky groups the only reliable way to beat the content.

The only other solution is to make the content easy enough to do that even mediocre groups can complete it with some effort. (And honestly, if they go down that route, they should just re-allow res-rushing in dungeons. Would be a simple fix; just throw enough bodies at the problem until it stops being a problem.)

But in the meantime? Yeah, as long as no exploits were used, you’re fine to take runs. You won’t run any risk of being banned for doing it.

2 Weeks Living World vs 2 Month Living World

I would prefer monthly/bimonthly updates, yes. It feels at the moment that most of my playtime is spent just trying to keep up with the Living Story. There’s also been a feeling lately that the Living Story is… unsatisfying? Look at Halloween 2013. Most players seem to feel that there’s not enough content to it. Having a bigger, meatier update come out once every month or two is better, IMO. It also gives the players more time to build up excitement and anticipation.

There’s plenty to do in the game while you wait; level alts, do dungeons, do Fractals, WvW, PvP, farming, roleplaying etc. There’s really no need to have new content to do every 2 weeks.

Halloween Skins - Price Predictions?

Zodiac skins have already doubled to quadrupled in price for the most part, so it’s a safe bet that the even more pleasing halloween skins will too. The only problem is that the new ticket price still caps them at 300 or so g (look at fused weapons that cost 7 tickets). My only question mark is if halloween skins will fall before their rise on the 11th, like zodiac skins. Anecdotally I opened a single chest from a dropped key today and got a bl ticket, so they may not be as rare as I initially thought. Or I got lucky.

Yeah, the price for BLTC weapon skin will likely not vary outside of the 100 – 200g range, simply because of the mitigating factor of the ticket #‘s required to purchase them. Nobody’s going to sell an unwanted skin below a certain price if they could use their tickets to buy a preferred weapon skin for more.

Take the new Bat Greatsword, with flying bat animations and unique look. People gawk at how great it, because it’s rare (or semi rare), and looks good. Without the rarity, the “looking good” part fades to the point where no one is impressed anymore. Then it’s time to move on to find the next great temporary skin. Then you give birth to the Skin Treadmill.

There IS already a Skin Treadmill though. You see it every time a new backpiece or weapon set comes out. A day or two after the content is released, you start to see everybody wearing Jetpacks/Holographic Wings/Fervid Censers/Karka Shells/Tequatl Wings/Slickpacks. Then, after the next content comes out, those items drop off in favour of whatever’s the newest backpiece. You hardly ever see anybody wearing the Holographic Wings anymore, and it’s been months since I’ve seen someone with the Shatterer Wings. I still see some people (mostly Sylvari) wearing the Fervid Censer, but more often than not, it’s the Southsun Rose. People have moved on from showing them off to wearing them because they like the aesthetic.

The same thing goes for the weapon sets. When something is new, everybody wants the item, but once the novelty wears off, people just dump it in favour of the latest shiny. Even now during Halloween I hardly see the Greatsaw, and when one does come out, nobody says a word about it. I’m certain that you’ll hardly see the Bat Greatsword in a year’s time too. It’ll have lost its novelty factor.

3. Removal of previous permanent content. This one is more recent, and it stems from the Twilight Assault release and, to a lesser extent, the Tequatl Rising release (by the inability to complete the old Tequatl Boss achievement). Put simply, a lot of us were quite upset that Twilight Assault removed the “Forward/Up” path. I, along with many others, had not had the opportunity to try out that path yet, and now we never will.

I honestly do not see why the new Aetherblade path could not have been added as a new “elite dungeon path” that is accessible by talking to the NPC outside the dungeon. This preserves the ability of newer players to experience the old content, but also the new content. One excellent design decision of the Explorable dungeons was how each was largely self-contained to within the dungeon itself; what happened in the dungeon had no real impact on the outside world. However, this isn’t going to be the case with the Aetherblade path; one day we will defeat Scarlet, and then you’ll have newer players trying out the path who go “Who’s Scarlet? What are the Aetherblades? Why are they in this plant dungeon? This doesn’t make any sense!” Separating the Aetherblade path out from the normal dungeon and into its own elite path instance would solve these issues by making it clear that it takes place in its own point in time, separate from the old Twilight Arbor (and of course, bringing back F/U!)

4. Rewards. This may be outside the scope of the Living Story designers, but in keeping with keeping content “permanent”, I would also like the rewards from the Living Story to remain permanently available to players. I understand the desire to give players “prestige items” they can work for, but I feel that this role is already filled by Legendaries and, to a lesser extent, Ascended items.

As GW2 continues to grow and more and more items get introduced, it becomes easier for players to obtain a unique look simply by choosing whatever items they feel suits their aesthetic, rather than just going for whatever is the most expensive. (Let’s be honest. Look back at GW1. How many Monks do you remember seeing wearing Obsidian armor and Chaos Gloves? We all know that those players didn’t do it because they liked the look; they did it because they wanted to show off their wealth, or “keep up appearances”.)

Legendaries and Ascended items exist for the players who want to show off their wealth. Let the fashionistas have their cake too by letting them customise their look exactly how they want, via permanent content rewards that they can do at any time.

I sincerely hope that you guys will take this feedback on board. I feel that my suggestions would allow the Living Story to continue and grow the world of GW2, but not at the expense of slower or newer players. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us.

Hi Chris,

First of, let me start by saying I appreciate the chance to speak directly with you guys and share our thoughts and ideas.

While I agree completely that continuing to grow and expand the world of GW2, I honestly feel that the Living Story (or at least its current method of implementation) is not the best way to go about doing it. My dissatisfaction with the current Living Story can best be summed up in three factors:

1. Temporary content. I’m a completionist by nature. I like being able to do everything in a game, given enough time. However, since the Living Story mostly operates off a two week schedule, that only gives me (and many other players, judging by discussions on this forum) a limited window of opportunity to experience the content. Many of us have full-time jobs, families and other responsibilities that mean we can’t devote hours every day playing GW2 (as much as we’d like to!), so we’d greatly appreciate having that pressure of a ticking clock taken off our shoulders.

I know that you guys have made major strides in dealing with this, as shown with the new setup for Tequatl Rising and Twilight Assault. It is a big step in the right direction, and I commend you all for it.

However, there still remain many great and exciting events in GW2’s history that are now permanently out of reach. The raid on the Molten Alliance facility. Defeating Mai Trin and her Aetherblades. And even the smaller lead-up events like helping Braham retake Cragstead, or kicking Scarlet out of the Pavilion.

Could it not be possible to include these events as permanent content, accessed via instances or a “flashback NPC”? For example, we were able to replay the said assault on Cragstead just by revisiting the instance and talking to a NPC, so you guys already have the architecture to do this. It should be a fairly simple matter to allow players to redo the Living Story, same as how the Personal Story co-exists alongside the open world. New players can thus always have the opportunity to experience what older players did, broadening the content and adventures that GW2 has to offer, as well as being able to obtain rewards that they can only now look at in envy.

The GW2 world might move on, but the GW2 content needn’t have to disappear at the same time.

2. “Rushed” Pace. When the two-week release schedule was announced, I and many other players worried about what this could mean for the Living Story. In particular, we were concerned that this would lead to burnout, both among players who “can’t keep up” and for you guys, having to churn out content at such a blistering pace. (I work in software development too, so I know what work is involved in getting stuff created, tested and out the door.) In time, quality often begins to suffer, resulting in smaller, less polished releases.

Sadly, I have to say that this seems to be coming true. While the Living Story releases aren’t bad by any stretch, they feel… unsatisfying. Halloween 2013 in particular seemed to bring this point home. While learning more about Prince Edrick and Mad King Thorn’s history (great work on the dialogue and voiceovers, by the way!) was interesting, it felt like it was over far too soon. In contrast, Halloween 2012 had us going on a scavenger hunt to learn more about Mad King Thorn, followed by the introduction of his Labyrinth, the minigames, and taking the fight to Thorn himself in Ascent to Madness. Then everything wrapped up in Lion’s Arch with classic games of Mad King Says, a fitting conclusion to the end of Halloween.

I honestly feel that moving back to a monthly or bimonthly release schedule would give you guys more time to put together more substantial releases, on the scale of the first Halloween release. It also gives players more time to build up anticipation; part of the appeal of festive events like Halloween and Wintersday is BECAUSE they’re big and rare. Having “new releases” thrown at us every 2 weeks soon starts to get dull, because we haven’t had time to build up that sense of excitement. It’s a bit like riding a rollercoaster, or watching a horror movie. You can’t keep your audience on the edge of their seats all the time; you need to give them periods where they can calm down and relax, to return to a sense of normalcy.

I had no idea it was ever changed to 4 players either. I suspect Electro and Durzlla are right; it’s just a case of playing at an hour where there aren’t as many players and less people joined the match.

It’s undeniably true that if someone has an early lead in Crab Toss, having more players around makes it more likely that person will retain their lead since everybody scrambling for the crab just spreads points around and nobody catches up to the leader.

Halloween Skins - Price Predictions?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

The other important point to consider is whether or not the particular weapon skin is considered “cool” by the player base at large. Case in point:

- Ghastly Grinning Shield skin: 820g on TP
- Grinning Gourd Rifle skin: 27g on TP

Zodiac weapons were by and large deemed unattractive by the wider player base, so while prices may rise in the future, don’t expect them to become cash cows the way other weapon skins have.

EDIT: One other factor to consider was that Zodiac skins came out after the new “1 ticket → 5+ ticket” system was put in place, so it’s also possible that most players who did want the Zodiac skins simply scrambled to get them while they were cheap, and now demand is almost non-existent.

I don’t really mind Bearbow Rangers, as long as they understand boss mechanics and don’t do silly things like stay at range when you need to melee, or knock back bosses when we need him to stay in one spot.

He’s a fun, challenging fight. I happily take him on if the party wants to fight him, but I’m also OK with skipping him if they’d rather just move on.

LFG Tool empty or am I doing something wrong?

in Players Helping Players

The LFG tool also fills remarkably fast. It’s not uncommon to start a group and have it filled within 5 seconds. It may be that you’re not seeing any groups because they’re created and filled too fast for your browser window to update.

Best thing to do is start your own group and watch it fill up within seconds.

Grounded Achievement tips (Twilight Assault)

Bring Renewed Focus. While invulnerable, you can run right through the electrified floors and not take any damage.

Your best option is to have a friend (an Ele with Mist Form works best, or someone who doesn’t care about the achievement) activate the first pillar. This will shut down the floor for about 2 seconds. During this time, run out onto the floor and hit Renewed Focus so you’ll be safe long enough to get up onto the platform.

Then stay there and DON’T MOVE until the room’s puzzle is complete.

Minions still good for PvE?

With the new minion health boost, minions are amazingly tanky in PvE. The Flesh Golem/Blood Fiend, with the “Flesh of the Master” trait, has somewhere in the vicinity of 30k+ health. There are very few Champions in the open world that I cannot solo with my MM.

MM Usefulness in Dungeons?

The one thing you might need to watch out for is against bosses whose mechanics require them to be lured to certain spots (e.g. the Ghost Eater). Bosses have a tendency to aggro onto minions, and since minions can’t be called off the way pets can, this can annoy your party.

In other situations, bosses targeting minions is actually a good thing. One good example is the Jade Maw; although him targeting minions slows down killing him, it also gives the party more time to build up a stash of crystals in preparation for his final attack.

Do the Down Abilities Stink?

Mesmer Downed 2 is great in WvW/PvP, but absolutely horrible in PvE. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve been downed while in a bad position and used it, only to end up in an even worse spot than before.

“Hai! I see you just got downed by the Clockheart’s gears. You want to escape? Let’s put you right into ANOTHER gear.”

My worries were wrong about the Prince...

I actually am of the opinion that Edrick’s personality is a result of him growing up under such a mad, psychopathic father. We all know that Oswald frequently tortured and killed his subjects and wives according to his own mad whims (although there is indeed a method to the Mad King’s madness), and this probably taught Edrick the lesson that there is nothing wrong with violence and killing, resulting in him growing up with the belief that he was perfectly justified in using torture and murder to get what he wants.

The conversation between Edrick and Oswald about Henrietta also suggests that Edrick may have unconsciously suppressed some of his own memories about what happened in his youth, believing them to be his father’s acts instead of his own. I dare say that Edrick himself is mentally ill, although not in the way that his father wants. Oswald probably did his best to groom Edrick to be a proper successor according to his own twisted desires, but all he succeeding in doing was breaking Edrick’s sanity. (“You’re not MAD enough!” – apparently Oswald’s last words to Edrick before he locked him in the box)

World Bosses

I agree that world bosses should be more engaging and challenging to fight than just showing up to the event and pressing 1.

However, Tequatl isn’t really the best way to go forward with it, IMO. I like his new fight mechanics, but it places too much emphasis on having enough players show up to even have a chance of defeating him.

Off-topic, but I would find it hilarious if the OP was kicked during Arah Story Mode. XD

But yeah, the only real way at the moment to safeguard yourself from that is to take a screenshot during the run.

Dailies, How do you play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Since I don’t PvP or WvW, I ignore those dailies altogether. I always start off by doing 2 – 3 matches of the day’s Activity (working on the achievements), then look at which maps have the Daily Kills/Veterans/Events, and pick an alt to play who’s currently in an appropriate map. If I have time after that, I also do a Fractal or dungeon if there’s a daily for that day, otherwise I skip it.

Since the Halloween/Boss Week dailies came in, I can frequently earn about 8 – 10 AP every day doing this.
