One thing to be aware of if you’re planning an Asura Thief though. I believe they do not get that cool “blur” animation that Thieves of other races get when they dodge. (ANet may have fixed this though? I’m not sure.)
This water tastes funny… o.o
I +1’d your post SO hard. I miss the SAB…
It’s gotten a bit worse since ANet updated the Sprint so that the first placer gets extra rewards. Before that went in, many racers would simply stop before the finish line and wait till 3 other people ran past before crossing the line, since all you needed to do was finish the race to get the chest.
And that means the 1st place winner is usually determined before the race is even half over, at least as long as they don’t make any stupid mistakes the rest of the way.
Hehe, that was how I got first place for the very first time. XD The person in front of me was being a juvenile cat and dropping Fake Powerups everywhere, forcing me to slow down to avoid them. Then, they screwed up with Lightning Pull and jumped off the edge at the long bamboo bridge, allowing me to gain the lead. The two of us were far ahead enough of the pack that I was basically unchallenged for the rest of the match.
Uvatha has a very positive attitude to the situation, which I commend him/her on.
All the same, there IS the risk that down the track you’ll see someone with an awesome armor/weapon/backpack skin that you desperately want, only to find out that it’s no longer available because you missed your opportunity to get it. You may also miss out on certain dungeons or mini-games that won’t come back either due to story reasons, or because they just weren’t very popular.
The point of story mode is to do them once, and do Explorable forever after.
The trouble with that is that experienced players have no incentive to go back and help new players through the Story Mode. This forces new players to group almost entirely with other new players, and the difficulty jump from PvE to dungeons is quite significant. That poses the risk of teaching these new players that dungeons are awful and they wind up not wanting to do any more dungeons in future. Since player numbers are the lifeblood of any game, you want to encourage new blood to join as much as possible to keep the population high across all sectors of the game, and that includes dungeons.
With that in mind, I do agree that awarding a small amount of tokens for Story Mode completion each day is a good idea. Perhaps you get 20 – 30 tokens for first time completion, then 5 – 10 tokens for subsequent completions. This makes Explorable Mode still the place to be to farm tokens, but it’s not a total waste of time for experienced players to go back and do Story Mode.
I’d want a PvE Armor Wardrobe (similar to the PvP Wardrobe), and for Birthday Presents, we get a token that we can exchange for any previous limited edition skin of our choice (e.g. Super/Fused/Sclerite/Dragon Jade weapon, or a backpiece). The skins obtained via this birthday token are account bound, so they can’t be resold. It’s just a way for players who haven’t had any luck getting the skin they want to get it.
I think she’s saying “Healthy and hale!”
Poor Braham…
But cheer up, cub. You still have Rox!
I have to agree that the combination of Account Bound + time-gated Charged Quartz creation is excessive. If the armor is account bound anyway, why bother having a time gate on creating the Charged Quartz? If the armor was not account bound, then I could see the point in including a time gate to create some rarity for Celestial items.
Personally, I’d rather that the Account Bound status be removed and the time-gate stay.
Yep. All Celestial gear is account bound on creation, so aside from the recipes, you won’t ever see them for sale on the TP.
5. Adnul Irongut
Location: Hunter’s Hearth in Hoelbrak. He is straight ahead once you enter the zone.
Special Notes: Adnul has the highest health of any of the Masters. His Water also heals for TWICE the amount of health lost when he Drinks. The combination of these two factors, along with his punishing Signature Move, makes him the most difficult and frustrating of the Masters.
1. Adnul is very, very, VERY hard to beat, and victory will probably rely more on luck than skill. His Signature Move is “Critique” which prevents you from using Bluff for the next three turns.
2. Take “Boast” as your Signature Move, although other players have also reported success using “Woo” (to stop Adnul from healing) or “For Science” (as a panic button to heal yourself. Bear in mind that Adnul could interrupt your Water with Belch, however).
3. Adnul opens with either Drink or Belch, but if he opens with Belch and interrupts your Bluff, consider resigning and starting again, as an inability to Bluff puts you at a serious health disadvantage before the most dangerous phase starts.
4. Bluff for two or three rounds, then Belch to try and interrupt Adnul’s Water. From here, keep a mental tally of how many turns have elapsed so you can try and interrupt his future heals (keep Belch in reserve for this).
5. Ideally, Adnul will start using Critique once he drops to about 50% health (the higher his health is before he starts using it, the harder it is to win). Once Adnul starts using Critique, activate Boast and try and stagger your Drinks and Water. Where possible, only use Water once he expends his Belch first, but keep your own Belch in reserve for when you believe Adnul is going to use Water. It’s vitally important that you interrupt his healing!
6. Once Adnul drops to the 40% health range, it’s down to mostly luck. (If you’re using “Woo”, now would be an excellent time to use it.) You need Adnul to keep Drinking and using your Belch to interrupt his Water. If you still have about 6000+ health when you get to this stage, odds are good you’ve won. If by this point Adnul still has more health than you, however, go ahead and resign as it’s extremely unlikely you’ll be able to outlast him.
The following thread also has several other strategies that others have used to beat Adnul. Try looking here if my strategy isn’t working for you.

6. Poyaqui
Location: Bazaar of the Four Winds in Labyrinthine Cliffs. He is on the upper level past the Wind Adept’s platforms, near the Patrons.
Special Notes: Poyaqui has slightly more health than most of the other Masters (but less than Maddie or Adnul).
1. Poyaqui is thankfully a lot easier than Adnul was. His Signature Move is “Spirits Vision” which automatically punishes you if you use Bluff within the next three turns. This makes it quite similar to “Critique”, but it does more and more damage the less health you have.
2. Take “Critique” as your Signature Move. Use it immediately once the match starts.
3. Poyaqui is unique in that he constantly mimics whatever moves you do, Drinking only if he can’t copy your move for some reason. Since you’ve used Critique straight away, Bluff the first 3 rounds, which forces Poyaqui to Drink as he can’t Bluff. If Poyaqui uses “Spirits Vision”, go to Step 4. Otherwise, take one Drink to make Poyaqui lose more health (and probably activate “Spirits Vision”).
4. When his “Spirits Vision” is active, Poyaqui stops mimicking your moves. He favours using Bluff during this phase, so use Belch immediately after he first uses “Spirits Vision” to force him to drink some more. Next, drink Water to heal yourself, then Drink for the last round of “Spirits Vision”.
5. Once “Spirits Vision” has expired, Poyaqui will start mimicking your moves again. You should have enough of a health advantage at this point that you can just keep taking Drinks until Poyaqui surrenders. If he activates “Spirits Vision” again, go back to Step 4 and repeat.
Congratulations! You are now a Grandmaster of Om!

3. Maddie
Location: Salma District in Divinity’s Reach. She is inside the tavern in the middle of the District.
Special Notes: Maddie has much higher health than Berddi or Caiwyn does. It takes about 15 or so Drinks to bring her down, compared to the 10 or less for the previous two.
1. Maddie is the first Master who will probably give players a serious challenge. Her Signature Move is “Woo” which prevents you from drinking Water for the next 3 turns.
2. Take “Boast” as your Signature Move. Keep it in reserve until Maddie starts using Woo.
3. Maddie is a real party girl and will almost always Drink. She uses Bluff about 1/4 of the time, and once she does, she tends to get into a Bluff streak where she Bluffs several times in a row. Use Belch to break her out of this and get her Drinking again. She hardly ever drinks Water, so don’t worry about trying to interrupt her healing.
4. Once she gets to 50 – 60% health, Maddie will start using Woo. (“Woooohoohoohoooooo!”) When she does this, activate “Boast”, then Bluff as much as possible. Drink ONLY if she interrupts your Bluff and do not have Belch available. Maddie will usually wait for a turn or two after Woo expires, so drink Water during this break to regain health. Sometimes Maddie will spam Woo several times in a row (usually when she gets to 20 – 30% health), but if you have a solid health advantage over her, you should be able to outlast her.
4. Graster Beakerbane
Location: Hero’s Canton in the Black Citadel. He is inside the bar on the left side of the zone.
Special Notes: Graster’s Water recharges after only one turn. When combined with his Signature Move, this gives him a HUGE healing advantage.
1. After the possible marathon you just had with Maddie, you’ll be pleased to know that Graster will go down a lot more quickly. His Signature Move is “For Science” which gives him a huge increase in health gain the next time he drinks Water. (Often enough to bring him back up to maximum health.)
2. Take “Woo” as your Signature Move. Keep it in reserve until Graster uses “For Science”.
3. Graster takes full advantage of his super-powered Water recharge, drinking it almost every time it becomes available. However, his health is also a lot lower than the other Masters, taking only 5 or 6 drinks before he surrenders. Keep using Bluff in the beginning until Graster takes two drinks in a row. This will almost certainly trigger him to use “For Science”.
4. Once he does this, activate “Woo”. Graster will try to drink Water to heal himself, but can’t due to “Woo”, so he takes normal drinks. When Woo wears off, immediately use Belch to once again interrupt Graster’s healing, which will cause him to lose.
I just thought I’d write this guide as a single, easy to read guide on how to defeat the Masters of Om. With one notable exception, the Masters are all fairly straightforward and can be defeated quite easily once you are familiar with how the game works.
The following is the order in which I recommend challenging the different Masters.
1. Berddi
Location: Applied Development Lab in Rata Sum. She is in a small room up a flight of stairs on the N side of the zone.
Special Notes: None.
1. Berddi is by far the easiest of the Masters, and a good one to cut your teeth on if you’re just starting. Her Signature Move is “Back In My Day” which prevents her next Bluff from being punished. (There is currently a bug where Berddi’s next TWO Bluffs are prevented from being punished, but this is not really an issue considering how easy she is.)
2. Berddi tends to use Bluff a lot, drinking only when she can’t Bluff. As such, the key to winning against her is to use Belch, which puts her Bluff on cooldown for two rounds. Don’t use Belch when she has used “Back In My Day” and for one round after her buff icon disappears.
3. Berddi will sometimes interrupt your own Bluff with Belch. If this happens, take a normal Drink, then drink Water, then continue Bluffing again. If your health is high, don’t be afraid to take a normal Drink now and again to recharge your Belch.
2. Caiwyn the Corsair
Location: Dreamer’s Terrace in The Grove. He is in one of the side chambers near the back of the Terrace.
Special Notes: None.
1. Caiwyn will take you longer to defeat than Berddi, but he’s also fairly easy. His Signature Move is “Boast” which makes him take less damage (about half) from his next three Drinks.
2. Take “Back In My Day” as your Signature Move, even though you could easily defeat Caiwyn without it. Feel free to use BIMD before using a Bluff at any time, just for the humorous dialogue your character says while using it.
3. Like Berddi, Caiwyn tends to use Bluff a lot, drinking only when he can’t Bluff. Use Belch liberally to put his Bluff into cooldown, although bear in mind that Caiwyn will use Boast to prevent him from losing too much health, making the match drag on a lot longer.
The Sanctum Sprint is a competition. A good racer is under no obligation to give up their place to let another player win, even to get their achievement.
That said, it’s a very NICE thing to do, and I think that players who do give up the first place spot to allow other players to get their achievement are shining examples of what makes the GW2 community one of the best of all MMO’s out there. If I was coming first, and someone asked me to stop so they could get the achievement, I’d happily wait at the finish line so they can come first, as long as they weren’t being rude or aggressive about it.
Untill the next big thing arrives you will see them everywhere.
This. So much this.
Anyway, I like the look of the Zenith weapons in general, but like Pixel and a few others, they generally don’t suit the aesthetics I’m going for on my characters. The only Zenith weapon I’m using at the moment is the Zenith Cesta (scepter) on my Mesmer, because the crystals kind of fit with the glowy purple energy Mesmer use. And even then, I’m switching it out for a Golden Scepter once I get enough CM tokens.
They are extremely annoying if you are in 2nd or 3rd place and trying to catch up, certainly. However, you can still avoid them by using Assisted Leap or Lightning Pull to jump over them, using Grounded, or just by taking a different route (although this will usually slow you down).
Your name is oddly appropriate, Plagiarised.
But awesome work nonetheless! Thanks for doing this.
Also, poor Braham.
But at least you still have Rox, my boy!
Good thread, Alex.
Although I’ve beaten Adnul on all 5 of my characters (including two where after multiple losing streaks, I just gave in and used a Rejuvenation Booster), I agree that Adnul is in severe need of another nerf.
My personal strategy against Adnul was similar, but slightly different to yours. This strategy relies on attrition and Adnul losing health faster than you:
1. I used “Boast” as my signature move.
2. Adnul opens with either Drink or Belch, but if he opens with Belch, I just resign and start again.
3. Bluff for two or three rounds, then Belch to try and catch his Water. If you miss this, odds are you’ve failed, but you can keep trying as long as Adnul’s health doesn’t drop low enough that he activates Critique.
4. Once you’ve interrupted his Water, try and keep Belch in reserve to interrupt his future heals. This is VITAL. At the same time, try and keep track of his Belch cooldown so you don’t use Water when he belches. It’s annoying if you get Belched while Bluffing, but considering Adnul’s signature move, it’s not a priority if Bluff gets Belched since you can’t use it much anyway.
5. Once Adnul starts using Critique, activate Boast and try and stagger your Drinks and Water. If possible, don’t use Water until he expends his Belch first, but keep your own Belch in reserve for when you believe Adnul is going to use Water. Remember, it’s vitally important that you interrupt his healing!
6. Once Adnul drops to the 40% health range, it’s down to mostly luck. You need Adnul to keep Drinking and using your Belch to interrupt his Water. If you still have about 6000+ health when you get to this stage, odds are good you’ve won. If by this point Adnul still has more health than you, however, go ahead and resign.
Yeah, you NEED to interrupt his heal to win against him. Trouble is, as you said, it’s a bit random as to when he drinks Water, so if you miss with your Belch, odds are you’ve lost the match.
There’s a few misconceptions in this thread, so I’ll try my best to clarify things from my experiences:
1. Each Kite Basket spawns 2 Kite Supplies when opened. The Kite Supplies is what you need to loot for it to count towards the title, NOT the Kite Baskets.
2. Each specific Kite Supply can only be looted once per day per account, so don’t bother camping out at one particular Kite Basket. This looting is also specific to each player, so players can’t “steal supplies” from each other.
3. Icons for unopened Kite Baskets appear on the map. When a player opens the Basket, the icon disappears. HOWEVER, the Kite Supplies that are spawned from the Basket remain in the world for about 1 – 2 mins, so if you are close, run to the Basket location anyway as you may still be able to make it to the Supplies before they despawn.
With the above in mind, here is my recommended strategy for getting to 60 Kite Supplies.
Firstly, pick a map that isn’t very popular. Mid-level maps like Fields of Ruin or Dredgehaunt Cliffs tend to be fairly empty of players, so most Kite Baskets will remain available until you open them yourself.
Pick a route that will take you past several Kite Baskets, adding Personal Waypoints (Alt+click, although you can only put one Personal Waypoint on the map at a time) to remind you where the Basket locations are.
From here, just move from one location to the next, opening the basket, looting the supplies, and then moving on. Once you’ve gathered all or the majority of the baskets in a zone, move to a new map and start over.
@Gabby: I couldn’t have said it better myself.
The recipes are still pretty cheap on the AH I made sure to get 1 of each and learn it just in case 1 day I wanted to make it. Told my husband to do the same.
That’s my plan too. I’m waiting for prices to fall a bit more before buying. They’ve been dropping slowly but steadily since release.
1. Meta Achievement for Personal Quartz Node
Yes, although it will depend on how good you are at JP’s. You need 16 achievements, and most of the Bazaar achievements require jumping in some form or another. You will also need to participate in either kite hunting throughout Tyria (which may not be possible if you are a new player) or taking part in the Sanctum Sprint mini-game. The latter is completely doable by a low-level player, but it again depends on how good you are at using the movement mechanics introduced in this update.
2. Lessons from the Sky achievement for the Zephyr Sanctum Model
Yes, but see above. Be prepared to spend hours doing this. It took me the entire evening last night to get it!
3. Kite Fortunes, Zephyrite Helms
Yes. You can either buy Kite Fortunes directly from the gem store, farm/buy materials and exchange them with the vendors in Labyrinthine Cove, or farm them from normal monsters. You should definitely be able to collect 250 Fortune Scraps within a month.
Officially, yeah. ANet stated that the events of Lost Shores and Flame and Frost canonically took place after the events of Arah Story Mode, and all subsequent Living Story events have flowed on from there. So while Arah and the surrounding areas is still a Risen-infested hell pit, the seas may have already started to be made safe for travel by the Pact and the Lionguard navy.
Australian here. I’ve been having some latency issues too trying to get the crystals, but I did manage to complete the achievement last night, along with the diving goggles, so I’ll share some tips here which will hopefully save some of your remaining sanity.
1. Assisted Leap goes MUCH higher when you’re standing still as compared to moving. So, for those of you having problems using it to jump onto pads, such as near the Wind Adept, try moving to the edge of the platform, jumping, and then guiding yourself onto the next platform. DON’T try and run and jump at the same time; lag combined with the fact that your max height is lower means you’ll miss many jumps.
2. If you are having problems with Lightning Pull overshooting the platforms, try targeting it manually instead of using the automatic link. (This usually means backing up until the targeting reticule icon appears on the skill again) When manually aiming, try to aim for locations where a solid object will prevent you overshooting. The lightning anchors themselves make for good brakes.
3. If you are trying to get to the diving goggles using dulfy’s guide and overshooting that little wooden spar with Lightning Pull every single time (like I was), there is a MUCH easier way to get to the diving goggles.
When you’re on the rooftop with the Sky Crystal on a little pole, instead of jumping off the edge like the route dulfy took, jump on top of that Sky Crystal, then Assisted Leap onto the roof above it. From there, you can use Lightning Pull to get onto the large beam overhead (aim yourself so you smack right into the cluster of wooden poles), then follow a straightforward route forward and right towards the dive goggles.
Kudos to the people with the dedication to get all 52! Multiple falls, lightning-bands, leaps that didn’t go as high as they should and more WP respawns than I care to mention meant that as soon as I hit 40, I stopped looking for more. XD
Possibly a new form of guild symbol appearance to be released in 2 weeks?
Best minis in game by a looooong margin!
Ehhh, to each their own. For me, nothing’s come close to the adorable simplicity of the Rockfur Rakitten .
So YOU’RE the one responsible for putting the kite basket in the Obsidian Sanctum! Get ’im, fellas!
angrymobchaseroutine
A ship is kinda hard to conceal when pulling up to a dock though. Unless you anchored far off-shore or around bluffs and then ferried your goods to shore in smaller boats. But that’s time-consuming and, if you’re a smuggler, you generally want to get your merchandise off-loaded as quickly as possible.
Discounting the possibility that Ree just goofed when it came to timeframes, I’m more inclined to go with Erukk’s first hypothesis, and that’s that even though Cantha’s borders are officially closed to foreigners, certain ships are given discretion to dock and offload their goods, but not to set foot on Canthan soil otherwise. It’s also possible that, if Cobiah reached Cantha 90 years after Usoku took the throne, Usoku might already be dead, or at least not in a proper mental state to govern properly, and his successor relaxed the rules a little.
Oh yeah, you don’t get rewards for joining a race in progress if you join in late. Not much you can really do then. :/
I hope you’re also being kind and allowing players who need the achievements for 1st place to pass you once you reach the end.
Yeah, the large kite baskets are not interactable for me too. I’ve been holding off on doing them on the chance that they are bugged.
Since you get the rewards from the chest at the end of the race without needing to wait for the race to end, couldn’t you just exit the race and rejoin it instead of waiting? Would probably be faster if you’re farming Sanctum Sprint for a long time.
That’s more or less what I’m getting at, Konig.
Perhaps the Six Human Gods didn’t so much “come to Tyria” as they were powerful humans who slew the previous Gods (who already existed in Tyria in the form of deities like Mellaggan and the Great Dwarf) and assumed their mantles. It would also explain why those racial deities have been silent or presumed to have abandoned their followers.
The second point is much harder to argue against, although as lore is a constantly evolving process, we can’t rule out the devs simply having changed their minds at some point between GW1 and GW2.
This is all just speculation for fun, of course. I’m not proposing this as a serious theory.
I’m fairly ambivalent about the whole Mesmer portal thing. If a Mesmer wants to portal other people because she thinks it’s a nice thing to do, good for her. If a player is terrible at jumping and has to get a portal to reach the end for the loot/achievement/goggles/whatever, fair enough. As Lanfear said, it’s no different from someone getting a dungeon run, or just waiting for other players to kill a Champion guarding a Rich Vein. A person who’s done it legitimately will always have the satisfaction of knowing they completed it honestly; that is something nobody can take away from them.
However, players who are begging for a Mesmer to do the JP JUST so they can get a portal is pretty much begging, and I feel that the Mesmer has a right to charge for her services if she takes those players up on their requests.
It would be interesting if the history of the world as we know it, with humans being brought here by the Six Gods, actually turned out to be false propaganda spread by the Gods and their priests themselves. Perhaps humans were always here on Tyria, and the Six Gods are the interlopers (or early humans who’d managed to seize power from the previous Gods) who are trying to re-write history. Could that be what the Fractals is trying to tell us? That the assumptions we’d had about human history in Tyria is a lie?
If the return of the Molten Facility meant we’d also get new opportunities to obtain the Jetpack and Sentinel gear/Azurite again, then my vote leans heavily towards Evon. Otherwise, the reduced Waypoint costs that Kiel’s offering sounds very, very tempting.
They should have just called it the “kittened” buff.
LOL, I support this. XD
I did notice that, and I also thought as you did that Tom was also Old Tom in the Uncategorized Fractal, but Scott’s post above clearly states that the Fractal takes place in the past, so unless someone in recent history found the wreckage of Old Tom, repaired it and placed it in Proxemics Lab, it’s not the same golem.
Basically, you must use a skill from the weapon to land the blow that kills the enemy. I’m not certain if a creature dying from condition damage inflicted by the weapon counts.
As you figured out though, the easiest way to progress the achievement is just by slaughtering critters with your weapon, since they always die in a single hit.
Honestly? I don’t think you’d ever be able to convert a PvE’er who wasn’t already into WvW as well. The holdouts are people who just do not like to PvP; they don’t like competing against other people, and they most certainly do not like being attacked by other players.
As long as WvW holds the risk of being attacked and killed by other players, you will never get these PvE’ers into WvW. (And of course, if you remove that, then it’s not really WvW anymore.)
I believe so. So far I managed to get few recipes for armor parts AND insignia so most probably you need both to craft armor piece.
Preview looks like oridinary Exo armor we can craft already so no special skins here. Also Charged Crystal did not show up in discovery window.
Bolded emphasis mine.
Thanks. That bit of info alone tells me that the Celestial items are NOT discoverable, and that we’ll need to learn each of those recipes to craft the items as well.
Doesn’t everybody get to open the reward chest at the end anyway? And the chest gives out the exact same rewards (quartz + 1 random item) regardless of placing? I’m not complaining about extra rewards, but I thought everybody got rewarded in Sanctum Sprint regardless (unless they didn’t finish at all).
But that would make the finished item recipes completely redundant. So why are they even in the game?
Hmm… Unless the finished item recipes use a completely different recipe, like 1 Pearl Weapon + 3 Charged Quartz crystals = 1 Celestial Pearl Weapon. Kind of like a way to recycle existing Pearl weapons into a new stat array.
I’ll have to test this when I get home tonight. Stuck at work right now and can only speculate. XD
Wondering if it even matters now??
As soon as they were introduced, I saw these Celestial recipes dropping like rocks. I’ll be shocked if anyone actually made a profit off them. ….and as another poster already pointed out…. if only dealing with the Mats themselves in “Volume”? … Waste of time when there’s so many other things worth 100x that giving the same markup margins…
I predicted that would happen. Unless they’re a completionist, a player only needs one or two recipes to craft the exact item they need, and since each Supply Box always gives one recipe, we’re going to get a massive glut of recipes that far outstrips demand.
Not that I’m complaining, as I imagine I’ll be able to pick up every single recipe for my crafters within a week for near-vendor value.
Yes, you can buy the Aspect backpieces. They are rare drops from the Sanctum Sprint mini-game. Note that although they look identical, the backpieces acquired by trading Fortune Scraps are account-bound, so you can’t get one of those and sell them.
Yeah, the Aspect backpieces are apparently also rare drops from the Sanctum Sprint reward chest, so my advice would be to buy the backpieces from the TP and save your Fortunes for the helmets instead.
The Aspect backpieces are apparently also rare drops from the Sanctum Sprint reward chest, so those you find from the chest may be tradable.
