Please be nice to PvE commanders

I make it a point to build for mobility so that I’m always the commander in front of the PvE zerg during invasions. It’s now to a point where those commanders are left in the dust while my zerg’s been completing events for 20 minutes before they catch up.

There are definitely points during the invasions where it isn’t always easy to break combat and move to the next location. Usually when that happens I just start running in the general direction. On the other hand, there are also people that seem to think that you can immediately get out of combat and use a waypoint as soon as an event ends. I’ve even been yelled at (by commanders and non-commanders alike) for not moving on within 2 seconds after an event has ended! I mean, come on! I’d love to waypoint out of there but it isn’t always possible.

But yeah that’s a good idea. I always have something that gives me swiftness when I’m leading groups so that I can stand out by running ahead. It also depends on how the other commanders are doing. If they’re doing a good job leading, I generally just take on more of a supportive role and bring those following me where we’re needed. If there are just too many commanders, I turn off my tag since I’m likely working against the rest of the map by leaving it on.

The same can be mimicked for WvW commanders. +1. Anyone who wants a tag or is thinking about a tag should read this.

Thanks. And I completely agree that the same kinds of things can be said about WvW commanders.

I never really paid any attention to the commanders in PVE zones. I just never thought they would be of any use. Until the last two updates and then I was able to see how they can directly impact the way the event is going to be played out.

I have always wanted the tag but I thought it would be pointless to have in pve. I may change my mind on that.

To keep in line with the topic I was doing and invasion last night 5 commanders traveled with each other from place to place. Everyone knows the outcome of that….

I get annoyed during invasions when I end up with another commander just blindly following me around to the various events. It just makes things confusing for people and anyone that was following him/her also tend to show up, which results in a zerg.

As tempting as it is to scale the invasion events up and up and up, it’s a bad idea and makes it harder to succeed. You only really need about 10 people at each event. It works best when the commanders spread out and try to limit how many people are following them.

This is something I tried to explain to some very upset players in map chat yesterday when the map event failed. They kept insisting that the commander tags caused the event to fail. While they had a point about some of the commanders not being very smart about what they were doing, commanders usually make the invasions easier. But they have to work together. Plus, we can only do so much. If people don’t listen and just start blindly zerging despite us saying otherwise because they see the blue icon, then that isn’t our fault. It’s the people on the map who are unable to see how they’re causing problems. Ultimately, it’s everyone in the zone that has to work together to succeed.

I’d be nice if they didn’t stand in LA all day – I’m only nice to the ones who really are helpful though & useful

But why be nasty to them at all? I mean, I agree that it’s annoying when people just stand around in Lion’s Arch all day with their commander tags on doing absolutely nothing except acting like new architecture in the city. And I say this as someone that has a commander tag on my guardian.

I usually politely ask them to turn off their tags and if they refuse (or respond in a nasty manner), I just let it slide. Rather than become part of the problem by being nasty to people minding their own business, why not take the high road and politely ask them to turn off their tag?

I can understand why people wouldn’t want such skins to be tradable. When they spent real money or gold trying to obtain a ticket, it was directly stated that the skins were exclusive, limited time items. ArenaNet has clearly listened to player feedback on this issue and has changed their stance, which I think is a good thing for the game and the community. But I also think that punishing people that supported them isn’t the best way to go about making that change. Providing a mechanism that lets players remove the account bound status on unused skins is, imo anyway, a must.

This is clearly a bug of some sort. If you own a full copy of the game and don’t have a trial account, you shouldn’t need to pay anything to use any of the in-game features. As Symaro said, wait a minute or two and try again. If that fails, completely restart your client (Exit to desktop → relaunch game).

I’d love to see more great mace skins. As a mace guardian, I find most of the mace skins to be rather disappointing. Even the legendary mace is a huge joke item. There was a great opportunity with the Zodiac mace and…it’s a freaking wild boar head on a stick. Sure, it’s a great looking wild boar on a stick. But it doesn’t match anything I have and I’d never be able to take my character seriously while wielding that thing.

At the moment, the only mace skin I actually like is the Fractal Mace. Since I’ve only been able to get one of those in the 9 months I’ve been doing fractals, I’m really glad I was able to get it early on or I’d be one really frustrated mace user.

I’m primarily a PvE commander. I have several points I’d like to make:

  • Unless I’m actually using my tag to help coordinate or lead something, I turn it off. Others should really do the same. There is no need to leave the tag on 24/7. It’s super easy to turn it off.
  • Many commanders have merely shelled out 100g for the status. Many others have not. Just like with legendary weapons, don’t automatically assume people have bought the tag simply for the status.
  • Commander tags aren’t absolutely needed in PvE. But based on my experiences in WvW, they aren’t absolutely needed there either. They’re a useful tool in the right hands and an annoyance in the wrong hands. I try to keep my usage of it in the useful category.
  • Judge a commander based on their actions, personality, and how they behave, not on your preconceived notions of what “all” commanders are like. Many of us are quite nice. Many others are serious kittens. If I see a commander being a jerk while helping me do something, I usually try to defuse the situation.
  • A blue icon isn’t a license to be a jerk to fellow players.
  • If someone suggests a better course of action than what I’ve determined is a good idea, then I’ll gladly take the suggestion and even change my actions accordingly if I agree with it. But not all suggestions are necessarily good suggestions. What I consider a good suggestion is based on my own experiences, knowledge of the game, and how the suggestion is conveyed. I treat suggestions the same way regardless of whether I have my tag on or off.
  • If someone has a problem with me or what I’m doing, I prefer being whispered about it and not called out in map chat. I consider the former to be polite and the latter to be an attempt to cause trouble. I’m more likely to listen to the polite whisper than the public calling out simply out of principle.
  • I use my tag to help my guild with guild missions, organize event chains, quickly mark a location on a map for the entire zone, help with invasions, and perform other similar tasks. Not everyone appreciates the help but the ones that do seem to outweigh the ones that don’t. You can’t please everyone.
  • It’d be a lot easier to organize things if more people joined my squad. It’s amazing how many times I’ve been locked out of map chat for “excessive messaging” and end up in a position where I can’t explain where to go or what to do next. When checking who’s in my squad, I often discover that I’m the only person following myself (not an ego thing — all commanders automatically follow themselves). Then I get blamed for causing the event chain to fail or for not commanding, when there’s absolutely nothing I can do due to the game locking me out of chat. Join my squad and I’ll be able to do a better job.

Why are fractal weps acc bound!?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s quite simple. It rewards people who actually do fractals. At the moment, that’s one of the only unique rewards we can get from that part of the game. I think they should keep them that way.

It’d be nice if we had more options to obtain them through playing in fractals beyond a random drop from the daily chest. But I like that they’re a unique reward to fractals. I hope they add other unique rewards too.

Actually, the easiest fix would be to go ahead and leave them as is but make the black lion tickets work for ALL weapon skins. then have the trader give you a black lion ticket (or five if they want to make it equal the aetherblade skins) in exchange for a wintersday ticket, jade ticket or fused ticket. having all these different tokens is kind of dumb anyay.

That’s actually a really good idea.

If I had to guess, I’d say it’s a technical limitation. If that’s the case, it seems like a merchant could be added that lets you exchange existing skin(s) for a new “fixed” version of the same skin(s). I don’t know how difficult it would be to implement such a thing but a simple stacking of multiple copies of the same skin fixes this issue. So surely it wouldn’t be that difficult to implement.

Only newly obtained skins in select sets are tradable. In the past, we intended those skins to be account-bound and not tradable. After the change, these skins will remain account-bound and not tradable. We will continue to monitor the value of those skins, but at this time, there is no plan to make tradability retroactive.

Wow. I really didn’t see that coming. This makes absolute NO sense whatsoever. People that decided to use their tickets are punished and those that decided to hang onto them (for whatever reason) can make a nice little profit. That’s just perfect. I’ve been highly supportive of ArenaNet for years and this is something I simply cannot support. At all. All along these skins have been account bound and there was no indication that this would be changed for older skins. Changing this without warning is highly unfair. Not making it retroactive is just ridiculous.

It feels like little more than a giant “screw you” and that is not a good feeling. At the very least we should be able to trade our existing skin(s) for a new copy of an identical skin that can be traded.

I recently noticed that as of the August 20 patch weapon skins such as the Dragon’s Jade weapon skins and some of the other RNG skins can be sold on the Trading Post now. I’ve had a Dragon’s Jade Hornbow Skin sitting in my bank for a while now that’s just been collecting virtual dust and thought it’d be great to sell it off to someone that actually wants it.

There’s just one problem: it’s no longer account bound and it isn’t tradable. I’m also unable to sell it on the Trading Post. Is this by design or is this a bug? There are clearly other similar skins available for sale on the TP. If it’s by design it seems rather odd to reward players that waited to buy skins until after they became tradable and punish those that bought skins earlier. Meanwhile, the price continues to drop as more people realize that they can sell the skins.

Whatever you do, don’t rely on aegis working for Deadeye. It seems completely random whether it blocks his 1 shot attack. I’ve been repeatedly downed while blocking and has resulted in much frustration. Also, since he uses his 1 shot attack immediately when you enter, it makes it extra frustrating to spend 6 tickets and be instantly defeated without even having a chance to react. Or worse, you have reacted and he shoots right through whatever you have up to block his attack.

Places of Power Destroying Quartz Crystals?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Zedd.8239

Zedd.8239

I’m not really sure what’s going on with this but when I attempted to create a charged quartz crystal from a place of power, I wasn’t given the option to commune and the 25 quartz crystals I had in my inventory were destroyed. I double and triple checked to make sure they weren’t deposited in my bank. They simply vanished.

I used 8 crystals I had mined from my personal quartz node in my home instance about 5 minutes before attempting to commune and 17 that I had mined from the previous 2 living story updates. I have no idea if that’s significant or not. The quartz crystals were stackable and didn’t appear to be different than any other quartz crystal.

However, when I brought another 25 crystals to the exact same place of power (Earthen Magic in Queensdale, directly south of Shaemoor Garrison), I was able to commune with it without trouble.

I’m uncertain how to reproduce this issue. All I did was mine quartz as I have been for the past 2-3 weeks and tried to fuse it at a place of power. I’ll attempt to recreate this bug again tomorrow once I’m able to create another charged quartz crystal.

Combat has always had depth. The problem has been with the encounters not having enough depth, which has caused a lot of players to get really lazy with their play styles. So when actual challenging content is added, people tend to scream that it’s “too difficult.”

I’m also glad they seem to be creating more content that’s actually challenging. I’ll be even happier if this mentality extends to fractals, dungeons, and other new content types (raids?) in the future.

I was probably going to do all of this content on my guardian anyway (I pretty much only play as her) but it was nice knowing I had the option to use the tickets I had with other characters. Now I’m stuck using them on just one character.

Do Legendary User Impress You?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zedd.8239

Legendary weapons don’t necessarily impress me. I do know what it’s like to go through that grind (I have the Bifrost) and I think being able to stick with it to the end is impressive (or pure insanity). I like many of the current legendaries and dislike several others. I think if a legendary works well with the rest of the look a player is going for, then it can be just what’s needed to complete the look. Or not. It really depends on what you like and don’t like. So for me it’s all about choosing the skins you like the most and not choosing the rarest weapon type simply because you can.

Because the mace is absolutely atrocious. I’m a mace guard and someone would have to pay me to equip that mess.

I’m also a mace guardian and I have to agree. I do think the Moot is a good joke item…but it isn’t worth the legendary grind to obtain. I think the fractal mace is currently the best looking mace in the game. And naturally, that’s what I’m using.

So basically, it doesn’t matter what we say. Everything is a festival regardless of word definitions, real world examples, or information directly from the game itself. I get what you’re trying to say about the current living story. There’s too much focus on mini games and not enough focus on bigger events. I agree. I just don’t agree that the inclusion of mini games automatically makes something a festival. At the moment, we’ve largely seen multiple seemingly unconnected short stories.

Please reread what I wrote. I didn’t say it can’t be festive in nature.

My point is that the Zephyrites arrived in Tyria to setup a temporary market. There are a few festive things that have accompanied them but overall I haven’t had any sort of festival vibe from this particular event. And the current part of the living story is about two city council candidates trying to obtain a trade agreement with the Zephyrites. Not exactly that festive.

A bazaar is a market.

If we’re talking about the Middle East, then yes, a bazaar is a market. But in other cultures -specifically american, and I believe, European cultures- it is a temporary market, a festive market, and generally comes but once or twice a year.

The concept of a bazaar is hardly unique to the Middle East. Many other cultures have their own words for this type of market. Bazaar is just a more commonly used word.

In the context of this event, it’s clearly intended to be a temporary market. The Zephyr Sanctum arrived in Tyria and setup a market to sell various items from other parts of the world. There’s no reason why such a thing can’t be festive but calling it a festival is simply inaccurate. It’s a market first and foremost.

Some people, myself included, just think the Abaddon fractal would be cool to see. It’s a part of Tyrian history we’ve heard about but never seen. Will it be deep with story and meaning? Probably not. That isn’t really the point of fractals. Most people that do them would surely know that by now. Or so I’d think.

If it wins, it wins and it’ll hopefully be a fun addition to the existing fractals. If it doesn’t win, then the alternative should be interesting too. People will complain about everything and anything regardless of the quality of the content. ArenaNet is really in a lose-lose situation when it comes to that. All they can really do is make the best content they have the resources to make. Both fractals have the potential to be awesome. People have unreasonable expectations for a lot of things. Those people will be disappointed no matter what.

I’m just looking forward to Fractals of the Mists getting expanded. My only expectation is that there will be new fractals to play. Anything else related to that is simply a bonus.

It may not be relevant to you, which is fine. It is, however, relevant to a lot of other people. Those of us that actually enjoy fractals win no matter what. We’re getting new fractals. It really just comes down to which one we really want to have made. Both sound like they have a lot of potential. I’m not going to throw a fit or cry about it if the one I want isn’t the one that wins. I’m just looking forward to new fractals.

Unless ArenaNet introduces higher tiers of infusions that add more than just 5 stat points each while decreasing the costs to create the current ones, these are completely and utterly pointless. They’re a massive gold sink for a negligible improvement in your stats. You’re better off just going with the Versatile Simple Infusions if you want agony resistance.

I recommend playing with a build calculator to see just how much of a benefit (or lack thereof) you’d get from +30 stat points.

Please, stop asking for raids.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zedd.8239

Zedd.8239

There’s absolutely no reason why GW2 should or has to follow the WoW model or the Everquest model or [insert MMO here] model for raiding. I’d love to see how ArenaNet would design raids for this game.

For a game with no “Raids” there sure are alot of 5+ man raid content around. Unless were back to the foolish WoW mindset that “Raids” are 20-40 man dungeons where a Tank holds a boss in place with a few Healers while the rest of us go afk.

Best post about WoW by someone that has never played WoW yet.

Clearly you’ve never done “looking for raid” in WoW. What PearlGore described is exactly what LFR is. You have about 3 healers, 2 tanks, and about 20 other people doing a typical raid (for example, Dragon Soul).

Anyone that isn’t a tank or a healer, can pretty much just sleep through the whole raid except for a few key points where you may need to move or hit a button. It was Blizzard’s way of making raiding more accessible to the average player, complete with a tier of gear between the non-raid gear and the “real” raid gear.

Of course, that doesn’t describe raids in the traditional sense in WoW at all (i.e., everything outside of LFR). Most fight mechanics are far more involved than the tank standing in place while the healers heal and the rest of the group goes afk. I didn’t get into raiding too much in the 6 months I played WoW but the Dragon Soul fights (especially when engaging Deathwing himself) were pretty involved and fairly well-thought out, especially in the 10 player version of the raid instance. If one person went afk or didn’t know the mechanics of the fights, they could cause the whole team to wipe.

I’m currently sitting on 74 laurels. I’ve decided to just continue saving them for the time being until more information is known about ascended weapons and armor. At best, we’ll probably be able to use laurels to help obtain the weapons and armor. I highly doubt we’ll be able to buy them directly with just laurels. At worst, they won’t be used at all.

If you don’t have a pressing need for any of the current laurel rewards, it can’t hurt to continue saving them in the off chance that they’ll be used somehow for ascended weapons and armor. Otherwise, I’d just buy what you need and save any additional laurels for possible future use. That’s what I’m doing anyway.

Anyone else stop getting gear bc of Ascended?

There’s absolutely not point to not continue gearing unless you plan on taking a break until ascended armor and weapons are added. At the moment we only know that they have plans to introduce ascended armor and weapons in the next 5 months. We have no idea when they plan to do that within that time span.

If you halt gearing your characters, you’re really going to be limiting yourself until ascended armor and weapons are added. I’m not sure I see the point in doing that. Exotic is still the highest tier for armor and weapon stats. Treat it that way until it changes.

Why Can't We Have More "Revealing" Armor?

This is pretty skimpy heavy armor:

I’m not entirely sure what’s “heavy” about it other than a few pieces of metal and spikes here and there. It looks like it more or less matches the kind of look you’re going for. It isn’t exotic armor and it has to be crafted. So you’ll need to craft it and then use transmutation crystals if you want exotic level stats on it.

The wiki page doesn’t have nearly enough info but I checked on my armorsmith character and it looks like you can craft it with 200 or 375 in armorsmith. There may be other tiers of the same armor set that I just never crafted. You can also buy a level 80 rare version of this set on the Trading Post. And as far as armor goes, it’s pretty cheap. Hope this helps you get the look you want!

Well, this has certainly been an “educational” discussion. I think I’m going to bow out of this now. We’re just going in circles and I seriously doubt we’ll ever change each others’ minds. Enjoy.

Exactly, hence why you give them aegis so they have room to make mistakes, and put up wall of reflection to deal with deadly projectiles. Apart from that, boss attacks tend to be quite clearly choreographed and easily avoided.

You don’t need to explain to me how to play the game or how to use guardian mechanics. I understand those quite well.

If they’ve spammed literally everything, then they’re simply bad players and there’s no helping them. If an attack can’t be reflected, then you dodge. If they’re out of dodges and a lethal attack is incoming, you put up aegis. If they have dodges … they can dodge.

Yeah, thank you. I know how to use aegis and how to dodge. I’m not sure what this really adds to the discussion. I’m not attempting to debate basic guardian fight mechanics with you. I’m trying to discuss other ways to measure effectiveness in a group.

Bosses tend to do massive single attacks anyway, so that single block is enough. If they spam a load of attacks, it tends to be projectiles so that can just be reflected.

Many projectiles can be reflected, yes. And I reflect them. Many boss (and sometimes champs) projectiles, however, cannot. Other attacks simply cannot be blocked.

“Retreat”?

Yes, it adds an additional block that gets used up rather quickly or simply has no effect against numerous boss attacks.

I’d say ideal circumstances happen more often than you think.

Maybe they do. That doesn’t negate the fact that what I’m doing works and works well for the groups I play with.

Then you’re measuring your effectiveness wrong, simple as. The big numbers you and your team members give is literally all that matters when it comes to efficiency.

Or, I could just have a different opinion and experiences than you. Have you ever considered that?

Oh look, it’s the “I’m having more fun than you” argument again. Pulling my weight, and sometimes knowing that I’m the one piece of the puzzle that’s keeping the whole team from falling apart is how I get fun in this game. Just because I use full berserker doesn’t mean I can’t have fun, non-zerker players crying about the “elitists” supposed inability to have fun is getting old.

Um, I wasn’t saying “I’m having more fun than you.” I was saying “I have fun differently than you.” There’s a huge difference. Read what I said again. I didn’t mean it as a dig at your play style. I was simply stating that we have very different views and accepting that we get enjoyment out of different things in the game. There was absolutely no need to go into a rant about elitists and an inability to have fun. I acknowledged that you’re having fun in this game. It’s just different from what I personally find fun. You’re reading something in my post that simply is not intended to be there.

That’s great for your support character. But that character should still be in zerker gear.

Nope. She really shouldn’t.

There is no stat that increases how much damage other players do.

I’m pretty sure I never said or implied that there’s a stat that does that. Again, you’re only measuring effectiveness by looking at damage and not at other factors that can impact things.
