Update for thief numbers on small golem.

Core thief D/D: 9.2k
Daredevil staff: 8.6k

Both tests used WvW provisioner food, pack runes, exotic armor, and accuracy and blood sigils, so there’s room for improvement. Also, my staff isn’t ascended, which might close the gap in DPS. If I use Thieves Guild, I can hit 11k on D/D as long as they are alive.

Shadow Trap

in Thief

Posted by: Zodryn.4216

Zodryn.4216

I’m not really fond if it. It requires LoS, it’s unreliable and it’s a dead utility slot in most cases. Most of the time, you’re not going to cap one uncontested point and immediately move back to another uncontested point; typically there will be a defense there.

It doesn’t require LoS, and it’s finicky, but reliable enough if you know how to use it. Also, I think you underestimate it’s uses. For example, say I’m supporting a team fight at mid and notice far gets capped. Knowing whoever capped it is probably now heading mid, I destroy the trap I left off point at far and decap. The enemy comes back since he’s close, and I dash back to mid while he wastes another 10s capping far.

Alternatively, you can place it on point and use shadow pursuit for cross map sneak attacks with 15 might.

I don't play backstab, but...

Yea, it’s definitely not expected. I’ve confused the hell out of some players by using it already, haha.

I’m hoping I can get a feel for what causes the glitch so that I can work around that, but so far I’m not sure.

I think it’s just weird pathing. It thinks a path will work, but the shadowstep stops short on some things like thick walls, or even tiny rocks sometimes. You kinda just have to learn where you can place the trap and where you can destroy it so the pathing works out. They really just need to update it to a teleport like mesmer portal.

Rev is out, kaput. Ded. Hail thief overlords and warriors. This is overnerf, its like thief that would have to use 10 ini just for shortbow 5.

I would gladly use 10 initiative for an infiltrator’s arrow with 1200 range and teleported me through walls and gave me unblockable attacks. Oh, but then I would only be able to use it every 10 seconds instead of every 5 like revs.

Good nerfs. Energy is supposed to be a limiting factor for revs like initiative is for thieves. Learn to manage.

Thieves don’t spend initiative on heal/utility/elite learn the mechanics before commenting. Also PT requires a target and bugs out depending on terrain while spending energy.

You’re right, but they do spent init on every other attack skill. Also, IA costs 6 initiative, so one every 6 seconds, had 900 range, no damage, and it too bugs out on terrain and still eats init. At 35% energy, PT can be used every 7 seconds, has 1200 range, and gives you 2 unblockable attacks.

Edit: PT is also instant while IA has a travel time, so the effective distance is actually less than 900. You can also legend swap to reset your energy after catching your target.

Venom share thief

in PvP

Posted by: Zodryn.4216

Zodryn.4216

Not really. I use the double pistol to administer the venom and try and stay mid-range. Every time the venoms are off cooldown in a team fight, use them.
Always try and use the venoms with allies inside your radius line.
Use all your venoms right before the gate opens.

I’m sure other people are better at playing this than me, but that’s the strategy i go with.

I would add that if you still aim to be the main decapper, you may need to avoid many 1v1s (just know your limits), and don’t always share everything with whoever is close. For example, I +1 for one ally, win, and my venoms come up. I may just share one venom or none depending, leave him to cap point, then go share the other venoms in the teamfight at mid.

That said, if traps are “fixed” and/or your idea implemented in a more clever way… Then sure, why not. Suppose it’d make trapper builds at least remotely interesting for people that don’t just want to troll and grief. I’m pretty much always in for anything involving active play.

Have you tried perma stealth trapper lately? Nothing with half a brain dies to it. Maybe unsuspecting core specs…even then it’s easy to counter.

Venomshare is interesting but has major problems in PvP. Salamander pointed out a good deal of them, but here’s my additional input. Sharing venoms makes your friends feel powerful and supported. They get free CC and conditions, so what’s the problem? Here are some key points:

1) If an opponent blocks or dodges, your venoms are still used up while doing nothing. You may time your strikes well to avoid this, but friends you shared with almost never do.

2) Best case, five people with venoms focusing one target are not too much more effective than a single condi necromancer, only the necro could hit up to five people with AoEs. Worst case, a single person with venoms is practically ignorable. Even in the best case, venoms are the last thing someone will worry about in a 5v1. They’d die to direct damage before the second condi tick.

3) Other builds allow you to duel or even group fight significantly better. You can always make a solid contribution, rather than sometimes, as long as your ally was close enough to get the venoms and the enemy doesn’t dodge them etc.

It isn’t high risk high reward. It’s too many prerequisites for mediocre reward.

As a thief main, I do agree that this condi build is pretty kitten cheesy.

Part of me is happy to see a viable condi thief build finally in GW2, but I’d rather see it nerfed out of usefulness than to have it continue in the current state.

Death Blosssom really needs to have a higher ini cost and then to be offset with either cleave damage or a better evade frame to make it worth using, but not worth spamming.

Also, venoms still overall need a good bit of balancing to address the following issues:

  • No stun breaks on venoms
  • Venom damage is still balanced around 5 target venomous aura. Reduce the number of targets for this trait and up the damage.
  • Venoms need to be able to cleave to some degree (except for Basilisk and Skelk, of course)
  • Skelk Venom’s cast time needs to be reduced.

I don’t think DB needs a nerf. It isn’t spammed because it’s an amazing super powerful skill. It’s just the only option. I say rework Dancing Dagger and give it weakness and torment to encourage using other skills. The Dagger Training trait could also add some poison stacks to Backstab, which could encourage CnD use. Instead of evade spam, you can mix it up with stealth, weakness, and evade while dealing a better variety of conditions.

Yes I play broken builds to test if they really are broken. It is what I have fun doing. Then I turn around with a full understanding of what is broken and what isn’t. If anything this should enhance my credibility.

I prefer to test builds to see which ones are unfair that is why people often see me playing a variety of broken builds.

Is D/D condi lower skill than power D/P? Absolutely. Is it overpowered or unfair? Not even close. There’s a reason the meta build remains D/P. The other broken builds lately have been the ones that inhabit god tier on metabattle, spawn numerous nerf threads, heavily influence team comps (five D/D eles back in the day, mesmers in every match S1, necro stacking S2) and are incredibly hard to play against. D/D condi just looks annoying since they spin all over the place. It’s not even in the same league as those other builds.

Fivedawgs, yes I get your point. It’s a technicality about the wording you used. But whether you say “shield” or “block,” “illusion” or “ally,” that doesn’t change the fact that taking Bandit’s Defense does not make your build a “block build.” It’s a viable skill that you can fit into a build for extra defense, but it is never the crux of a build. For example, I can take Bandit’s Defense in a perma evade condi build, or a power D/P build. Those builds are not “block builds” then just because I use that one skill.

Again, if I run venomshare, I can take Thieves Guild to share the venoms with my summoned allies. That doesn’t make it an “illusion” or “minion” build or whatever you want to call it. It’s still venomshare. Not that anyone runs Thieves Guild anyway, because it sucks.

You admit to never having touched a thief and yet you’re trying to school thief mains since launch on what our viable builds are.

Going back to your list
1) venomshare is a viable build (in PvE)
2) there is no viable block build, if you want one, run engi or guard
3) there is no viable summon allies build, if you want one, run necro
4) “perma” evade is a viable build using either D/D condi or power staff
5) you ignored the meta power D/P build

2-So, you admit that they exist? But want to argue over technalities?? OK .. even shin called them and I quote " I am not used to go against thieves with shield"

3- just like number 2, you deny the claim then go on to say that they exist and claim that it’s not viable…

No, there is no such thing as a shield thief or an illusion thief. Period. He tried to clarify what in the world you were referring to, since they do not exist.

Do you call a minion master an illusion necro? No, that makes no sense. Calling thieves who use Thieves Guild “illusion thieves” is similarly silly. Thieves Guild gives you two allies that deal very low damage and last 30s on a 180s cooldown. How do you make an “illusion thief” (implying those allies are the primary focus of the build) out of that? Similarly, how do you make a “shield thief” with one single block skill? It’s a great skill, but no thief builds revolve around blocking (or “shielding” if you insist on using the word shield) because we simply don’t have any other blocks!

Ok, I’ll provide a few thoughts on S/P vs S/D, and then then some thoughts on the rest of your build.

Dual skills (skill 3):
S/P 3 is highly telegraphed and roots you. Even if you stun/immob, good players rarely take full damage from this skill. It can function in team fights where people aren’t paying much attention, but that is not where you should be as a thief most of the time. S/D 3 is great for duels. Winner S/D.

Skill 4:
S/D 4 is a complete waste of initiative. Use S 2 to chase, steal, dash etc. Dancing Dagger is possibly the worst thief weapon skill. S/P 4 is a ranged, on demand interrupt. One of our best skills when used properly. Winner S/P.

Skill 5:
S/P 5 is a smoke field, which could combo with Bound for stealth. If you run Dash, it isn’t that great, especially since it eats init you could use for skills 2 or 3. S/D 5 is stealth and decent damage, though somewhat telegraphed. Useful, but again, 2 and 3 is where it’s at and you should be running S/D as a dodge build, not stealth. Winner, meh.

General:
If you are running Impacting Disruption in the DD line, S/P is great because the stealth skill, 3 and 4 all stun/daze. Your play should revolve more around timely interrupts than trying to burn down with pistol whip. You can still interrupt when on P/P as well, so that may be a good bet.

S/D is a great duelling set, but I’m not too sure if you’re just running it as an alternate to P/P. It may not be the best choice. You should try out both and see what style you like though. They’re very different.

Other Build Thoughts:
You are running pure power on P/P, which is fine. You are also running maximum stealth, which is confusing. With DD, you should have plenty of dodges to use that as a primary defense tactic. The main benefit of stealth with P/X is the bleeds, which would be good on a condi or hybrid setup. You would be much better off with some extra stun breakers, SoA, etc. than running full stealth utils and SA.

If you like P/P and want to make the most of sneak attack, perhaps you should try a hybrid build. If you do run hybrid, you could take Pressure Striking and S/P would still do alright, but otherwise I’d choose something other than Sword.

Finally, P/P is fine on it’s own. You really don’t need an alternate damage set. Running S/P or S/D alt is a bit useless if you use all of your init on Unload. If you swap, you’re then at range with a melee weapon and no good options. That’s why most thieves run SB alternate, for the utility. You may not love the weapon itself, but you can’t say you don’t love a 900 range teleport on demand.

Each bearbow could be controlled almost simultaneously, not including movement. The ideal number of bearbows on separate clients then increases to 10, or even more depending on how dexterous you are with your toes. Of course, you may need to include the cost of 10+ computers vs the potential gains to be had controlling 10+ clients in your bearbow math. The money dragon strikes again!

I think you got some wrong information. It might state that the base regeneration is “5%” but in reality it’s “5”

I just tried dodging as daredevil and as normal thief, recording it at 60fps, loading into video editing and went frame by frame.

Daredevil base endurance regeneration is at 5/sec.

And if i remember correctly it was mentioned many times before.

Edit: And i think the regeneration rate is capped at 7.5/s (8.75/s for thieves). So having vigor + buff food, gives you no bonus. The food will only work in the down time of vigor when you don’t have permanent vigor.

Correct, it takes 10s to get one dodge without vigor on a DD. DD does not have higher base regen that OP claims. Food should stack with vigor, however. I believe that was a recent change, but don’t have the source.

Sorry, But Question.

in Thief

Posted by: Zodryn.4216

Zodryn.4216

Daredevil has too much access to evasion. You get about 15 dodges over 30 seconds

That’s a bit misleading. You can only achieve that if you are using SoA twice in that time period, and assumes ideal spacing of dodges and endurance gains. Here’s a better way to characterize it.

1 dodge / 10 seconds naturally (.1)
2 / 30 from SoA (.0667)
1.6 / 16 from CV (.1)
1 / 30 from Steal (.0333)

So 0.3 per second or one dodge every 3.33 seconds. You can get a bit more from other sources, but those are the big ones.

Comparatively, another class with no endurance modifiers at all gets one dodge every 10s. So a DD that uses all three skills when they are off cooldown has three times as many dodges as the worst case for other classes. However, the other class likely has block, invuln, protection, resistance, etc. Also, it is very unlikely that you will always use all of those skills off cooldown. I’d say a dodge every 4 or 5 seconds is more realistic.

Remember that prior to the vigor nerf, our dodges cost 35 with feline grace and with vigor it would only take 3.5s to get a dodge. That was without even using SoA. The vigor and FG nerf killed S/D and Acro. I don’t think we have too much evasion now. We have a lot, but we need it unless Anets seriously tones down other elite specs.

Edit to answer OP, lockdown is your friend. If you’re on necro, immob or chill will bait dodges, some good pressure can bait shadowstep, which may be his only stunbreak. After that, fear will give you the opportunities you need to really lay into him.

As far as the build goes, there are some things that don’t quite make sense. You have needle trap and caltrops on dodge, while trapper runes and bound grant stealth, which gives access to sneak attack. All of those things are good for condition application, yet you run marauder.

I understand you are going for an annoying build with hard and soft cc, but why not get the most out of all of your utils and traits? I recommend swithing to a hybrid ammy. It will synergize nicely with the bleeds from sneak attack, condis from utils/traits, and might and direct damage from unload.

Also, you may consider DA over CS for an extra needle trap on heal (and stealth thanks to rune), and might/lower cd on traps.

Personally I think it looks super crappy but w/e.

edit: To clarify, by crappy I mean ‘not legendary at all’. Yes it’s alright and not every legendary needs to be over the top (I personally enjoy the sleek, simple skins much more) but it’s just super generic and underwhelming in terms of design.

Not a tiger in sight… And i’m sorry to the designer but again its not appealing at all, Better than a pony bow but not worth the grind imo.. with that result.

Whether they realized it or not while designing it, it’s close to the Crimson Lion ShortBow with the shared features of color and the two lions/tigers on the bow. It’s not unique and Legendaries should be unique if nothing else. Essentially it’s a Crimson Lion bow with the thorns stretched out in front and an aura.

Actually reminds me more of the spider Halloween bow..

This to me seems legendary

My main issues with this bow:

1. It’s Red: Now I wouldn’t mind red effects, like blood mist or blood soaked foot falls, given what the bow is based on. But for the entire bow, being tiger themed, to be red instead of Orange or white; the heck were you thinking??

2. Bulky: Short Bows are meant for fast fire and easy maneuverable in close quarters. This bow does not look or feel like a short bow. Too large and way too much clutter.

3. (Not) Tiger Themed: Aside from the tigers on the shaft of the bow; it does not say tiger. If you took those away this bow would look more tribal or fire themed than tiger. And as many have pointed out it’s just a Glorified Crimson Lion skin. Not saying those weapons didn’t look nice. Just saying I was hoping for an actual Tiger themed bow, not a Crimson Lion bow with tiger idols.

Agree on all points. I think it needs a color change (orange and black instead of red effects), lose the tiger statues (too much like Crimson Lion and they don’t look that great) and a scale the size down a little so it looks like you can actually hold the thing. It is currently a hefty great bow, not a short bow.

If the bow is named after two tigers, why would it have lions or something that looks like a mane?

Anyway, flames or thorns. It looks like a design by committee. Which was the point I was trying to make, not specific details of what it’s composed of.

Wow, apparently I need more sleep. I kept thinking it was lions. Maybe because of the similarity to the crimson lion set and the fact that it is a bit mane like. That further supports a color change. Why red instead of orange, yellow, and black? Nothing in the design says tiger to me.

Edit: After seeing it on a screen with a higher resolution than 800×480, it looks better. Still too bulky and I dislike the tigers on it.

That’s the sort of thing you get when it’s designed by a committee rather than one person. Each person in the committee has to put his stamp on the finished product.

Designing by committee
“Let’s put a tiger on it”
“Two tigers, one on each side”
“Thorns would show it’s from HoT.”
“It needs to stand out, so let’s put lots of thorns and branches on it”
“Red is my favorite color so let’s make it red”
“And a red aura”
“Make sure the tigers are red”
“Put that shield design in front of the hand”

And a Legendary Shortbow is born.

I’m pretty sure they are not thorns, but flames. Potentially meant to look like a mane as well. I actually like that aspect, but the lions on each side make it too bulky and similar to the crimson lion set. If nothing else, those should be removed or changed.

I know it’s not even out yet, but the model has three major issues in my opinion.

1. Crimson Lion skins overlap with the theme too much (you can keep a lion theme without so much overlap). Would you release an entire BL weapon set that was planetarium themed, with a scepter that looked like a slightly different, smaller version of Meteorlogicus with less effects? I’d hope not.

2. The model is generally not very distinctive. Other legendaries have unique models that set them apart, even without their special effects. Some others are a bit generic, but it’s ok because there aren’t other skins the same theme competing with them.

3. This is personal taste, but the bow is huge! It seems like there is just too much bulk.

I’m sure the last thing the devs want to hear is a bunch of complaining when they’ve likely put a lot of work into this. I think it’s a cool idea, and I’m thankful they made it. I was really looking forward to a serious SB legendary for my thief, and I think with some tweaks this could be it. As is, though, it feels too similar to other content to motivate me to make it.

A few things.

  • Cloaked in Shadow is completely unnecessary. D/P 3 and 5 both blind already.
  • Hide in Shadows is a nice heal, but the cast time is too long. Withdraw is a better option, especially if you don’t run Dash to cleanse immob and chill.
  • You can already stealth on demand with 5+2, so the mobility and lockdown cleanse on Dash would be better than Bound imo. At that point, Channeled Vigor is a great heal option in place of Withdraw.
  • Thanks to taunt and reveal in addition to the classic knockbock and fear, SR is a bit risky these days. Blinding Powder is a great alternative, and combos with pistol 5 for additional stealth duration.

It’s not really that far off the meta build tbh.

Kek, kappa .... What?

Kek is a carryover from WoW. The two opposing sides in that game can’t speak to each other. Kek is lol translated from hoarde as seen by alliance, iirc.

That is, a hoarde player will type lol in chat and an alliance player sees kek in the hordes player’s chat.

Which is, in turn, a nod to StarCraft’s Korean players, in which “kekeke” is a sort of “hahaha”.

Possibly, but I would assume it’s just a coincidence. I’ve never seen a sentence and its translation written out but I doubt Blizzard put a lot of effort in it. It’s more likely the consonants are shifted over by one (k instead of L) and the vowels are also shifted over by some number.

Maybe someone who plays WoW can comment if it’s shifted over or not?

They’re not switched over, or displaced. It’s a cipher.

The “kekeke” is only really used by S. Koreans in online games, and it started in SC. There’s a key in korean keyboards that generates “ke”, and it became a sort of mocking laugh, often directed toward western players.

When you realise “lol” translates into “kek” and you’re aware of the above, particularly the language divide but the well known expression of laughter, coupled with the knowledge that Blizzard pay very close attention to their communites/online and their games are full of these kind of references, it seems an unlikely coincidence.

That said I’m unaware of any statement from Blizzard on the matter.

Ok. It seems kind of odd they would base their cipher on one South Korean computer slang word, but no doubt odder things have happened. (By base I mean they would have has to design the cipher with that word in mind so that the finished cipher would have it work out properly).

Well for one, SK has always been a dominant force in competitive SC, so things that SK players type would naturally be seen by the community and likely also Blizzard. Also, it is a laughing expression. It is not surprising at all that it would become a thing. ???

Edit: lol it ate my hangul.

Toxic, good player or bad, nice player?

The toxic good player has a reasonable chance of going afk when they don’t like the way the match is going. Bad player>afk.

I would pay $30, and more for gemstore items related to new masteries (whatever the equivalent of glider skins happens to be).

Good lord yes. Usually a good vantage point is a boon. In our case it just means out of range messages.

What if Infiltrator arrow was F3?

Sounds good to me. Either that, or just make the F3 key enter into Shortbow mode so you can still retain all five skills. I’m all for having a second main weapon set :-)

That is actually a really interesting idea. Ele and engi only get one weapon because of attunements and kits. Since all of our sets share the initiative pool, there’s no reason why we can’t have more than two sets.

I recommend grabbing mushrooms and then updrafts next. They make exploring so much more enjoyable. And just wait until you get infinite gliding! It’s fantastic. Congrats!

Why is there no Anti-condi stat?

in PvP

Posted by: Zodryn.4216

Zodryn.4216

Health is the anti condi stat. You can also become immune through resistance, cleanse condis numerous ways, dodge/block the application, shorten duration through some runes/food/traits, transfer condis, convert them into boons, etc. There are actually more options to deal with conditions than direct damage.

We don’t need an armor like stat specifically for conditions.
