[Feedback Thread] New Crown Pavilion First Impression [merged]

in Festival of the Four Winds

I just don’t understand why the mechanics have taken such a step back from the Marionette boss.

Because the Crown Pavillion is “older” then the Marionette Event. And someone from A-Net wrote, that the “Festival of the four winds” was reworked/actualized by a “small-ish” Team (because the other Teams are working on china launch, LS2 etc…).

My conclusion: they did not have enough ressources (people) working on this to do it better. Which is a pity.

The zerg, whether you like it or not, is a core aspect of this game. Mechanics that you put in to split up zergs make the game LESS fun, not more fun

I would like to see good mechanics, that split up zergs. That could be MORE fun.

That would mean, that the game should give some direct visible indication, at what positions/places additional players are needed and where no. And it should not depend on 6 players that put their blue lamp on.

And of course, the “megaserver-mapchat-language-filter” should be disabled (and the megaserver-language-problem should be solved), so that everyone can read the informations/hints in mapchat from other players.

GW2 in China; any hope of Cantha?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It was speculated that in order for GW2 to launch in China, they had to remove any references to Asian culture.

It was also speculated, that the “delaying” of Cantha had nothing to do with cultural or legal issues but just a shortage of man power ressources because of the work that has to be done for the China release.

If the last speculation is true, the hopes for Cantha could be go up because the China release happened now.

It often happens that a mashed potato with gravy is even better still, unfortunately gravy requires more dev time. So we end up shipping a mashed potato without gravy to meet our promise of ship time or we push back the time and date of when we are shipping again and again. You get your mashed potato with gravy but it is delivered much later than it was expected.

Do you now the saying “You have to shoot the developer to get the software out” ?

It means: A lot of software developers think that their software is never “finished” and always find something to make it different/better, so the project manager has to finally shoot the programmer to “finish” the software or the software would never be finished and shipped.

Greetings.

P.S. Do not shoot programmers. That is not meant to do in reality.

So yeah Im basically bored i guess , but wanna play the game , anyone else just feeling the same way as me ?

Zerging the world bosses was kind of fun when it was new (for me) but started to become boring after a few days. I think most of the people do it not because it is fun but to farm.

It’s really a no win situation for them. So why stick their hand in the hungry piranha tank?

If something is really screwed up (so that your loyal customers transformed into piranhas) then the best way to start a communicaion with them is to jump into the piranha tank.

And then you will see: They are not really Piranhas. Just angry. And after blowing some steam you can start (with most of them) a healthy und constructive discussion and you can (and will) convince a lot of them to stay and wait and explain why some changes are necessary, what could be changed, and what could not… etc…

Happy customers are always a win for a company. At least for a company that cares about its existing customer base.

What’s the point of even giving us a choice between paying money or doing an event to get a trait if we’re never going to be able to do the event, anyway?

The point of this is, that players get the illusion, they would have a choice. ^^

There needs to be five daily achievements low level people can easily get.

Today was: Gatherer, Recycler, condition applier, daily events and leveler.

They could be achieved easily by low level char in queensdale. Maybe with a little help from the still existing qeensdale-train.

Other good/better Megaserver-Implementations?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

Hi,

with the recent changes in GW2 to the megaserver-system and the problems that it caused a lot of players of GW2 I am wondering if there are other megaserver-implementations in other games out there that do not have these problems and do it “better” in some way.

I know that (T)ESO promotes megaserver, but that seems not to be a good example because their megaserver und phasing technology seems to make it worse than in GW2.

One other example comes to my mind: GW1. It does not call it “megaserver” but the districts of GW1 have some similarities to megaserver maps. What GW1 does “better” is that players can choose which version of a map they want to join (so some kind of “manual overide” of megerserver-algorithm). I think this “manual override” of map-choice could be a good thing for GW2.

Do you know of other megaserver-implementions?

P.S. Please do not make this a big discussion about “other games” but a discussion of GW2 and how it can be improved by ideas that have shown that they work in other games.

thanks and greetings.

Have there been problems this week? Certainly. Could things have been rolled out differently? Probably. But in no way does that excuse how this community has reacted. We dare say the Anet team can’t have a bloody holiday weekend to themselves? Of course they can! Who are you to say they don’t deserve one? (And there are threads where this exact statement is happening).

Just an Example:
Whenever the companies I have worked with released a major software update that could have a negative impact on customers, the time of the roll out was carefully planned and chosen, because at least in the first week after the update no vacations would be allowed and everyone has to be on “stand by”. Because, when something “bad” after the update happened, every person/ressource has to available to help to fix the errors as fast as possible and to inform the customers.

So, an update, just a few days before Easter would never have happend because no one wants to cancel the easter holidays and because everyone deserves their holidays.

So some people are thinking, why are things not rolled out differently? A-Net is not a “start up company” and does have a long experience with this 24/7 “game-service”.

Greetings.

Will You Be Playing GW2 Less Post Patch ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zok.4956

SO they killed the champ trains , the bosses and the dailies. Will you be playing less now ?

Well, the champ trains are kind of replaced by the 15 minutes each hop “world boss zergfest train”. I tried that (so I played more than before the patch) a few hours, but it gets boring (quite fast), like the champ trains so I will play less.

3.) Give players the choice, which “map/instanced” Version the Player wants to join,
as a drop-down list like:
#0, gendarran field, let the automatic decide (default)
#1 gendarran fields, 100 Players, language english
#2 gendarran fields, full
#3 gendarran fields, 10 Players, language german

etc…

The ArenaNet Developers have already commented that at the moment this is not possible.

Please give a link to an official post/website with this Information. Especially the “at the moment” part.

The contested waypoints thing is kinda dumb. Instead of showing all waypoints contested that could be, just let you port like before and if it IS contested, then it moves you to the closest one on the map that isn’t (like Orr has always done before).

Yes, that would be a much better system.

broaden your horizon rather applies to people not willing to engage a conversation in a language they should know in this case.

If you are fine with english, good. I do not force you to play in german. If others are fine with german, why do you want to force them to use a language, they are not comfortable with? “they should know” seems like some form of “Oberlehrer” behaviour.

This discussion would not exist, if GW2 was “all english only” from the start on. Everyone who wanted to play and buy this game, but was not comfortable or able to use english, would have stayed away from the game and would not have bought it.

well, that applies to people past a rather high age as of now, english has replaced russian in importance by far and long ago.

When I was 12, a 18 year old was “rather high age”, when I was 18, a 30 year old was “rather high age”, when I was 30, a 50 year old was “rather high age”.

I see people from 12 to around 50 (and above) are playing this game and some of them have definitely problems to express themselves in english und use the language actively.

These language problems may not fit in your world view, but they exist nonetheless.

Are there not other ways or tools to communicate though. If I am talking to someone who does not know English well I use my body language. Or get a translator.

All this takes time. time that gets you killed by a mob/boss.

The purpose of this thread is for understanding reactions and the correct way to respond in accordance with culture when confronted with Non-English speech and ways to deal with it.
Should not what language you use be determinant on your audience and what you speak?

Yes. Some example:

When I call someone in the netherlands on the phone, of course I try first some words in dutch and ask then later if we could change to english.

It then happens a lot that the person on the phone, realising that I am german (a lot of people in the netherlands understand german), switches to german and then we speak german.

This is a friendly und polite manner of both sides.

If I called someone in the netherlands and talk german right from the start, this could be realised as really bad manner/behaviour and the person on the other side, of course, does not understand german (even if he/she does).

On the other hand, If someone calls me and wants to sell me something, I expect him/her to try to speak german with me. It is then up to me to “allow” to switch to english.

But the relationship is not only “player vs player” but also “game vs player”.

GW2 “promised” (in some way) that this game is (also) in german with a german speaking community and with servers in german language. So people play this game that have problems with english. And now the megaserver technology forces (in some way) this players to use english. So it is less fun and more “work” (because of languages problems). And people feel also betrayed.

As for our countrymen in international groups and maps: EVERY german has english as a first foreign language right after elementary school, the trend is even going younger.

Maybe you should broaden your horizon a little outside of your peer group.

I know of two dozen german players myself who can read a little bit of english but are not fluent enough that they can write in english, so I have to do some translating for them (I am not that good myself). Writing in english takes more time than in the mother tongue. Translating takes time. Typing takes time. In some events there is not enough time for this without beeing killed.

Ignorance is no excuse here, it is just arrogance.

Yes. totally. But this goes both ways.

I am wondering if there is some sort of manner rule in Europe that in multi-language countries that a common language like English be defaulted to when speaking in public.

Well, I only know of one multi-language country (a country with more than one official language) in Europe, which is Switzerland.

The default for speaking in public is the official language (example: German in Germany) of the Country. And it is some kind of “manner rule” to try to speak the language of the Country you stay at the moment, especially if you are a guest in another Country, is considered as politeness. (“When in rome, do as the romans do”).

However, this is only a short overview. The language and cultural diversity is very high in Europe, so there are a lot of “specialities” and also some “animosities” between some cultures/countries/languages.

Instead of kittening about the mega-servers, how about we try to offer them some solutions instead? I know some of you people code, you’ve said so yourselves.

The solution for the babylonian language confusion is easy:

“language selection” should not be some part of a heuristic learning algorithm but should be a “hard selection” which means: Never ever put players with different language settings on the same map.

LOL—they just have to change the TOS to the english only rule for ingame communication . Problem solved. (kidding).

I really hope the actual megaservers are bugged and that the actual behaviour is not the intention of A-net. But how could one tell? I see several threads closed, some “everything is fine” on Facebook but otherwise no reaction/statement from A-net yet.

Some statement like “megaservers should assign depending on language but there are bugs and we will fixe them” could help to wait patiently.

•Do not debate Customer Support decisions or actions.
•Do not post about locked, deleted, or otherwise moderated threads or posts.

If you do not understand the background, why I quote this, I am sorry but can not explain more without violating these rules. I do not want to violate the rules or get an infraction.

Hi,
I have understanded from the announcements, that the megaserver Technology would group players together on maps based on their preferred language.

In reality I can not see this . the map chat on EU Servers is full of English/ German/ French/ Italian/ Spanisch/… languages, combined with agressive or passive agressive demands to use this or that language or to not use that language.

Because of this clash of languages, the map chat overall seems to bee much more agressive and playing together with fun becomes more unlikely.

I belive a MMO is about playing together and communication and understanding each other is a big part of this.

I also think it is a big mistake if a game bans or hinders people from using their mother language from one day to another. And I think this is what the megaserver is doing right now.

Players who are in the USA and on the big US/NA-Servers may not see this as a problem. I can understand that. But on the EU Servers it should not be taken lightly.

Please ANet: Change the megaserver so that only players with the same language setting are put together on the same map.

thanks and regards.

I’m always baffled by these threads. I know some of you people understand how programming works.
(…)
Even a seemingly insignificant change can have unexpected consequences. One person makes a text field slightly bigger (pets can now have 15-letter names instead of 12!*) and suddenly your whole game crashes.
(…)
Obviously they want to make sure as much of it works as possible, knowing that when they release it into the wild two dozen people will still manage to break something in a way they never anticipated anyway.

What you write is no excuse/reason for not announcing a patch time.

I work in a company were we have to update large production servers from time to time. Of course we have to test it deeply before every patch goes live and of course we have to announce to our customers the exact date, time and estimated “down-time” of every patch a few days in advance.

What led them to introduce a system named after Zenimax’s Elder Scrolls Online Megaserver System, and that will go live exactly eleven days after the Elder Scrolls Online launched? Coincidence? I seriously doubt it.

I believe one important reason is “Marketing”. From what I understand, the “Overflow” System of GW2, has already a lot of the “Megaserver-Technology” and they only had to develop the “distribution-mechanism” how players are put on the maps.

Greetings.
