Farming IS a form of grinding.

Farming and grinding are the exact same thing/activity doing over and over again to get something (loot, achievement, gold, etc..)

Difference is: When doing that activity is fun for the player, it is farming. When doing that activity is not not fun for the player, it is grinding.

Example: Silverwastes: For some People it is still fun doing it over and over again (so it is farming for them) and for others that is not fun (so it is grinding for them).

ok i will explain my feelings towards this a bit further. when i play i dont feel i put myself into the activities i do. everything is narrowed down to what the developers force upon me.

Of course it is. Because the developers developed the game and you can only do in game, what they have developed/enabled.

when i play, everything ends up going in a circle, SPVP, fractals, dungeons, world bosses, etc….then rinse and repeat. understand?

Thats how it works when you have played all the “one-time” content and are only playing the repeatable content. In a single user game you would have “finished” the game and you would switch to an other activity or to an other game.

where is the individualism in that?

The individualism is in your own decision. You could stop the “rinse and repeat” everytime, if you want. No one (not even the developers) force you to do this.

“why does it feel grindy”, “i got bored after i hit lvl80”, “when my friends stopped i just quit”. well its because this game forces a robotic form of gameplay into its playerbase, and i think it needsm uch more variation.

As a side note: Because of too much variation, some people feel its grindy. One example: A lot of things can drop in game as loot but can also be bought with gold on the trading post. And you get gold by playing in nearly every play style. So it is a lot of variation. But there will always be a few playstyles that are most effective for getting gold. So some people only play this few playstyles and than have the feeling that getting gold is grindy.

The rage on April 1st had nothing to do with being offended. Those were trolls…. The rage on the 1st was about the lack of choice to turn it off, and that is not an issue. Most people didn’t want to ruin it for people enjoying it, they just wanted the option to turn it off because it was stupid and annoying.

A few days before April1st, on March 24th, an airplane (Germanwings flight 9528) from Barcelona to Dusseldorf crashed in France because the co-pilot locked himself in the kittenpit (flight deck) and crashed the whole airplane to commit suicide. 150 people died. Not only in germany a lot of people were shocked by this incident.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanwings_Flight_9525

So, maybe you can understand, why some people were not happy but angry and shocked, when they saw, a few days after this tragic crash, groups of people playing airplane and jumping of the cliffs in GW2 to kill themselves as if they ridicule the victims.

Why Guild Wars 2 is the most 'Square' world

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zok.4956

Since the original Devs came from WoW and were familiar with that game’s seamless maps then I’m going to assume there was a particular reason why they didn’t put it into this game, as nice as that would be.

Perhaps someone with computer knowledge can say what the disadvantages of a seamless world are to the game’s engine.

I think the reason is simple – they had a working engine in GW1 which rely on instancing (ie restricted and focused maps) and they just went with a that design instead of rebuilding it from the ground. You dont just “put” something like a seamless map into a game. Its a core part of its server architecture, how transitions are handled.

But I dont know what Anet was really thinking. I am hoping it was “we just want to make a great game!” but it may have been “a new engine is going to cost us what?!?!?” :P

I do think, that the GW2 map technology evolved from GW1-map technology. Thats one reason for sure.

I think the GW2 map technology also has some benefits. In Rift/Archage/Wow you could get a “Server is full. please wait some hours in queue before you can play”. With GW2 map technology in PvE every map is independent of all the others and if one map is full it does not affect the other maps. And if you want to enter a full map you were placed on the “overflow maps” (before A-Net expanded the overflow-technology to megaservers).

I really like it, to be able to play GW2 (in PvE) when I want to and not having to wait in queue.

So, every (technology) choice has pros and cons.

Zok.4956

What a silly argument.

And yet it was and is still a good answer for the OPs question:

Why, Anet, is the Guild Wars 2 World Map so square?

The answer is not more silly than the question. Or maybe the OP asked a question but did not want an answer?

The OP is right to point out that each of the individual zones is rectangular and this is unnatural and does not at all look like a real map.

Yes, the map does not look like a real map. The borders are different and in a real map there are no waypoints for instant travel, etc. Its a game. Its a fantasy world. It is not photorealistic.

I would liked it if GW2 had a seemless world without map-borders; one map for the open-world (like in Rift). But GW2 uses a different game-engine and technology so it seems not to be possible and I dont care if the borders of the maps are rectangular because it is not immersion-breaking for me.

Why Guild Wars 2 is the most 'Square' world

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

breaking news: every map/zone/world in every 3d video game ever created is defined by a rectangular volume.

every.single.one.

some hide it by using decor to cut the space into a smaller, less even shape, others do it with invisible walls.. but they are all “square”.

Hmmm .. not that i really have a problem with th squares .. but this looks different.

On the other hand RIFT also had a “seamless” world, and not closed zones like we
have in GW2.

In Rift the whole island from your picture was in one rectangular map. In GW2 there is no such “world map” but a lot of instanced smaller maps (one map per zone). Thats why the borders look more rectangular in GW2.

Endgame question: did GW2 find the answers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

This game set out to do something new. Fundamentally, are you sated by the current range of activities and pursuits available at level 80? Aka thePVE Endgame.

The GW2 PVE endgame starts around level 1 (or so). You do not have to wait for level 80 to enjoy the game/endgame. I think the game really achieved something new.

But in every game there comes the time, when a player has “finished” all the content.

Some games try to delay this with gear grind and gear/raid-progression. GW2 does not (except in fractals…). I like it the GW2 way.

My only wish for A-Net/GW2: Create more content (they are doing this already) and do it faster (no one wants to wait). :-)

Racial storytelling is GOOD, Collin.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

(Collin i assume) was saying how racial storylines are bad, because you can’t experience the whole story on one character and later in the game you have objects (krait orb) or people you have no idea about, because you didn’t choose personal story relevant to them.

I think he has a valid point.

And consequences of my storyline choices is what i want in HoT.
I don’t want a happy ending with everyone cheering happily if I went the “I don’t trust salads route”. I want asura, charr, humans and possibly norn being satisfied at the treason-free environment inside the pact, while much less numerous sylvari (cause i left some of them to die) to hate my guts behind the scenes as i chose to not trust modremoth’s potential minions.

Yeah, sounds nice. However, this is more a thing for a single-player-RPG, where the whole world is centered around your own character.

In a MMO, where you play with a lot of other players, that could have made different choices, this would create a lot of problems with phasing that could not be solved easily.

Thats why you only have choices in the PS, because that is the single-player-content within GW2.

I think it would not be a good idea, if you could choose that all sylvaris are your enemy in a story instance and then go back to the open world and this choice would not matter (i.e. you could not engage other sylvari player characters in open-world-pvp) :-)

I would think that the developers would be able to run some sort of diff on their data base to identify accounts that have the title and have not linked their accounts and roll those back or at least remove the title and AP. In line with that they should also be able to run a script that would pull all accounts that are linked that have the achievement in GW2 but not in GW1 and roll them back as well. I think that would be the most amicable solution.

Yes, it is really that simple. Just open up a command prompt and type:

do diff;
do roll back;
execute;

And it will all be fixed.

I think its OK. It is how B2P (buy to play) with an expansion works. You have to buy the expansion to be able play it.

I have got my first box (after the achievement box) on my exactly 35th successful vinewarth event. I have counted it with a check list on paper.

I refuse to believe that “after 50 runs” you’ve only gotten the guaranteed coat box drop because the drop rate is extremely high- RNG or not. If you flip a coin 50 times, you’re not going to get heads 50 times.

Yes, you can.

Its all the 5 players fault.

At least one person (of the 4 that knows the dungeon) should have asked “does everyone knows the mechanics?”
And the one that does not now the dungeon should have asked “I am new here, can somebody please explain?”

That is common sense at least in the dungeons/inis/raids I was in.

If you had time to write that in chat, you could just have taken the time to simply explain the encounter.

There are a few minutes of waiting before the encounter starts. That would be enough time to explain the few basic mechanics of the three lanes and bosses. It is not that complicated. I have done it myself several times.

Why do i have to pay for OLDER content in a BUY TO PLAY game in the first place?

“buy to play” means, you have to pay (thats how you buy something) for the content, you want to play at least once.

LS2 is not part of the “base game”, it is content, that was added later and A-Net decided to test “microtransactions” with this.

I do not thought, that was a good decision when they announced it in the past, but it is actually “buy to play”.

You still can play this without paying for it, when you play with a friend, that has the LS2 episodes unlocked. And of course the new maps are free also and need no unlock.

For a moment this idea came to my mind, too. But I don’t think I do it. Because it is not teamplay.

There are already often on maps a lot of players standing AFK in the camp or elsewhere and are waiting for the breach and the map feels a little empty, even if it actually is full.

I hope there will be other ways (in Open-World PvE) to obtain the carapace chest box in the near future. Then the players that are there only for the grind can leave the map for good and only the players that are having fun playing there, stay.

I disagree.

First: The general concept/design stimulates gambling on the stock exchange too much.

The armor set doesn’t really tell us much either. Only that we will get the last two parts with Episode 8. For all we know with a potential Episode 9 we will get another set (there have been new armors data-mined recently).

Anet said that the first four episodes of S2 where the first half of S2. So the second half of S2 has to be also 4 episodes (which means episode 8 will be the last episode of S2) or A-Net has a very strange interpretation of the word “half”.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

How can a RNG with an even distribution of its numbers be highly subjective? From a mathematical point of view it is absolutely fair, because every member has the same chance of getting a success on each roll. Each roll, over the complete lifetime of the game.

Yes, every member has the same chances, but does not get nearly the same items/loot/results over time. So people feel unlucky on the lower end of the curve and that they are not treated fair.

GW2 is still a MMO-game and not a slot-machine, at its core.

And: Applying a random distribution can sometimes also be seen as unfair by itself. Example: Would a system, where your graduation or university degree is purely based on a random “rolling a dice” be a fair thing? I do not think so.

It is a bug. If this change was intentionally, then the intention was bugged already.

Can we get a confirmation that this is (or is not) worked on?

Now its not only about this bug anymore, but about again missing communication.

Thanks.
