They are the canopy. In BWE3 you can get there during the night with the help of a copter.

BW3 feels not so dangerous as BWE1 and BWE2. It should feel dangerous. But it was already in BWE1 und BWE2 that when a zerg was doing the events, they were not challenging.

However, the new champion in the tree-tops “Gwyllion” has a really nice mechanic and wiped us (a small group) a few times with his veteran friends.

should we expect the other three maps to be like vb? will setting change? jungle is boring me already. i wish they had done this like caledon forest with more variety to the terrain…some swamps some jungle some water.

It’s safe to assume that the other three maps will be like Verdant Brink when it comes to verticality, amount & quality of content. The overall setting will not change since everything is going to be jungle-themed. However it’s unfair to say that there will be no variety. With three biomes (canopy, floor and roots) I’m sure expansion will have plenty of variety to offer and what I’ve seen so far on the beta-weekends confirms that.

A-Net said a while ago on a live-stream, that not all new maps will have three biomes.

But I am sure in a month we now much more.

(…)
-Do you know any blondes that play? She has long blonde hair. I don’t know if I could get her into games after decades of never playing one. Maybe meeting some friends with blonde hair would help shake off the negative stigma she has against video games.

P.S. Maybe it is unbelievable for some children, but parents are normal people, too.

Which has turned out to be almost the polar opposite of how they actually work.
(…)
I had thought joining a guild would be like joining an organised team.
(…)
I thought this would be the case for all aspects of the guild. That if you were doing something with your guild, it would be a highly organised and smooth operation.
(…)
I had also thought that TS and guild chat would be dominated by a running discussion of tactics and game mechanics.
(…)
Anyway to summarise: I thought guilds would be highly organised, and informative.

Yes, some guilds are this way, others are not.

After all, why else bother with a guild?

Some people have more fun playing with friends than playing alone or with strangers. Some people like an almost military organisation, others dont.

Guilds are, after all, only a bunch of people. And different people have different likes and dislikes. The hard part with guilds is: Find the guild that fits your needs.

And: For the actual content, there is no need anymore to discuss tactics and game mechanics all the time in the guild chat (maybe there is if you are a speed-runner). Maybe this will change with new content (HoT).

Personal rewards stacks is NOT the problem as it helps you identify how much you helped in each invasion.

I think it is a major problem, because the reward stacks identify not how much you helped with the events, but how fast you could travel/waypoint all over the map to tag as much events as possible.

there should be some buff/boon (like in the silverwastes breach event) that you can tag only one event at a time until it is finished.

Or: Whenever a tagged-event is finished, the “personal event tag-list” is cleared.

This would reduce event-hopping a lot.

Unreachable to us in the lower levels maybe. People in the canopy might be able to glide to them easily. (Since we are in an instance, the canopy above might not be rendering. I don’t think you can see things that are outside the instance boundaries.)

You can fly around with tyria-3d and you can see that there are even jumping-mushrooms placed on some of this high above flying islands.

I am sure we will be able to fly to some of this islands. At least after October 23rd.

The updrafts under the blighted tree allow you to reach a Mastery point that is likely impossible to reach otherwise. There might be other ways to do it, but the way I used was to drop down, hit one updraft, and instead of heading for the second, I flew to the left a bit, and landed on a nearby vine. Then I climbed up that vine a bit, putting my higher and closer than I landed, and took off for the second updraft, which got me to the MP.

Or you could just jump into the hole from above und directly land on the vine with the mastery point and the blue asura without needing a updraft.

[BWE2] Events are boooooooring

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Zok.4956

In really enjoyed the story of the 4 event chains (in BWE1 and BWE2). However, because these event chains repeat so often, I do not feel to accomplish anything with mastering an event chain. And after a few repetitions the story gets less and less interesting and the events persist mainly only of fighting. But to zerg down everything with a lot of people is not really interesting or challenging for me.

So yes, after I did these event chains several times, they become kind of boring for me, too.

So I really hope, that in the final map(s) there will be much more of such event chains, so that it takes longer until they repeat themselves for a player and that the players on the map spread over more events, so that there are less players per event.

I sure hope that you realise this’ll ensure you will have to grind open world events in the Maguuma Jungle for the rest of 2015 if you intend to unlock all of the masteries. Unless the mastery system is reworked I can imagine that the only challenge will be to not fall asleep while you run along with the rest of the zerg in order to complete the same event for the 117th time.

Yes, the events are fun when there are not so much people and when they are new.

When there are a lot of people, it is just zerging down everything, which is not fun for me and doing the same zerg-event over and over does also not sound like fun.

So I really hope that there will be enough fun things do do that can be repeated and that give decent exp.

“There a are some things we know already from A-Net: There will be 4 new PvE maps, not all have three biomes and we have now seen 50% of the first map, verdant brink (around 25% in the BWE1 and another 25% in the BWE2). Assuming all 4 new maps will have the same size (and playtime and fun..) I have seen and played 1/8 of HoT-maps (of course, not the final versions, it is a beta overall)”-Zok.4956

I read it as only 25% of the 1st map in all would be shown during beta weekends. I do not think we have seen 50% of the first map with what the last 2 weekends have shown. I sure hope not. This new area is nice but, I was hoping for more of what the POI’s indicated in that there would be a Top, Middle, and Floor to each of the new areas and so far I have not seen that.

BWE1: “they will land in Verdant Brink, the first map of the expansion, where about 25 percent of the total playable space of that first map will be available to play.”
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-first-beta-weekend-event-begins-august-7/

BWE2: "From there, they will land in Verdant Brink, the first map of the expansion. For our second beta weekend test, you’ll be landing in a different part of the map than the one we showed in our first beta weekend, and you’ll be able to explore a new area: the jungle-floor biome. The playable content will comprise about 25% of the expansion’s first map. "
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-second-beta-weekend-event-begins-september-4/

Sounds to me, that in each BWE the playable content was 25% of the Verdant Brink map which adds to 50% because the two BWE have different parts of the map.

Disappointment with Verdant Brink zone

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

The biggest thing that turns me off Verdant Brink isn’t the gameplay – that seems fine, for what little I’ve done of it so far. Instead it’s the level design. It’s a complete departure from the naturalistic landscapes of Kryta, Ascalon and the Shiverpeaks – Timberline Falls being my favourite aesthetically. Instead we’ve got platforms in space with trees through them, which is something I just can’t relate to.

I was fine with surreal landscapes in GW1’s Domain of Anguish, because that was the point; it was in the Mists and was meant to be bizarre. Edge of the Mists has a similar explanation. But this… doesn’t make sense to me, and jars badly with my memory of the Maguuma in GW1.

Where you visiting Metrica or Caledon recently (recently = GW2 base game) ?
There are also floating trees and platforms and rocks.

Beta weekend players, HoT worth it or not?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

Hello, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is still deciding whether or not HoT is worth purchasing.
To those who played in the beta weekend, do you feel like HoT is shaping up to be a good purchase? I feel like the original game gave me such a good value for my money, does HoT compare?

As an example, I will just compare the “open world” PvE-maps:

There a are some things we know already from A-Net: There will be 4 new PvE maps, not all have three biomes and we have now seen 50% of the first map, verdant brink (around 25% in the BWE1 and another 25% in the BWE2). Assuming all 4 new maps will have the same size (and playtime and fun..) I have seen and played 1/8 of HoT-maps (of course, not the final versions, it is a beta overall)

Comparing only this to the maps of the GW2-basegame (and the price when GW2 released) I would say, HoT has not such a good “value for money” ratio and seems a little bit overpriced.

Knowing what I know now, I still would have purchased it. It seems “a little” overpriced, but it is still fun (well, a lot of it) to play.

Questions on Biomes?

Zok.4956

From my understanding it was:

Vines
Floor
Roots

BW2 seems to take place on the Vines and Floor.

My understanding is the bwe only uses the floor. Neither the roots or canopy are open yet. That from a dev comment for BWE1 and i assume the same here

You can reach the top though and it’s nothing but sky. I was thinking the same thing (floor) but it doesn’t make sense when you factor in you can get to the very top of the map and it’s only sky – no vines, or huge canopies or anything.

You can not reach to top of the map, you can only reach the top of the BWE2 area.

I was climbing to the top and I reached the upper border of the BWE2 area when I jumped (first picture) and on that picture is a platform on a tree above, above the BWE2 area, where a POI seems to be.

Yes, there is not very much so high above, yet, but I already see there floating trees/rocks, flying dragons and a flying air ship. When you are on a tree top there should be a lot of air/space around you.

BWE2: POI on tree platform above the beta map

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Zok.4956

I tried to get the point of interest north of Faren’s Flyer waypoint but could not reach it. I believe, it is above the beta-map.

I climbed on two positions (south of it and east of it) to the highest point and when I look from that positions in the direction of the POI I see a platform on a tree with some kind of stones on it as you can see on the two pictures.

The two pictures are from positions at the upper limit of the beta map, because, when I jump I get a warning “You are leaving the demo area. Return to the demo or you will be teleported back.”.

So it seems, the POI is above the beta map.

P.S. There are other interesting things there high above: Some copters that are standing in the air, from time to time, without rotating rotors, some flying dragons and a flying air ship that seems undamaged.

My feedback: HoT Beta

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

Not sure what’s really going on this section of the map – it lacks the direction part 1 had (ie now we’re fighting Hylek rather than interacting?). Now this could easily be because we’re thrown in “halfway” so to speak, and with no Personal Story, that could explain the lack of direction and the feeling of running around aimlessly in an area which is just a maze of pathways.

Thats what I thought. It helped a lot to have gliding and mushroom jumping unlocked to travel the map, but this maps feels as it there is put “too much effort” in it to make it dense and to make it a maze where you run in circles.

And when I did some events there were so much players that it was totally easy and not challenging at all. Just run with the zerg and try to tag mobs. Not fun for me.

So after a few hours playing in the BW2-verdant brink I have to say the verdant-brink part of BWE1 was much more fun for me (even with the bugged events), than BW2. But I will give it a try again, tomorrow.

Sorry to call out on this. But Anet shouldn’t mis-represent things…

There is also Season 2 to buy, so you can buy. HOT, then, if you want, you can buy Season 2. 2 things to buy, not one.

Am I being unreasonable in saying that this statement is false?

If you are a new player and have bought the “base game” and you want the achievements of season 2, then you also have to buy season 2. If you do have a friend that already has season 2 unlocked, you can play with him season 2 without buying it.

There are also a lot of things in the gem-store that you can buy.

So, a player can definitely buy more than only HoT.

But you have to see the whole context of his statement: A player needs to only buy the latest version of the game and the previous versions are included. Right now we have “the basegame” and “HoT”. (and season 2 was not part of the base-game, if you i.e. bought the base game a few month ago, but it also was not an expansion).

So: In context his statement is not false. But out of context it could be seen as false. But I think it is wrong to see it out of context.

Will Raids Take Up Too Much Of Devs' Time?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zok.4956

Zok.4956

I have heard that raids typically take up a lot of time for developers. (…) It leaves me worried that this component of the game will overshadow updates on existing content.

Every part of game development takes a lot of ressources and time for developers.

A-Net does not have unlimited ressources, so every work that is put in one game mode is missing in another game mode.

So whatever your least favourite game mode is, it is, in a way, taking ressources away from your most favourite game mode.

If this worries you, that is your personal choice. But GW2 was, from the beginning, a game with different game modes where players have the choice to play only the game modes, they like and where different players like different game modes.

I think ANet are being sneeky and de-valuing existing chars/accounts in order to force people to buy HoT, masteries are being sold as new-content when infact they are the new level 80.

I do not share your opinion.

Masteries is a way of progression that does not devalue existing content and existing gear because masteries help you only to overcome new content/maps for which that special masteries are made.

They do not make you any stronger in “old-Tyria” and they do not force you to get new gear with a higher level.

Neither you nor me where there at A-Net at that time, so we do not know the real reasons why the decision was made to fire him.

The game has failed, like any other MMORPG that found itself forced to go into free to play (like TOR, ESO, WildStar and so on).

In do not share your opinion. And GW2 ist not free to play like the other games you mentioned. If you want the latest and full game, you always have to buy it. So the latest version of the game (at the moment: HoT) you have to buy and only the older versions you can play for free (but not really free-to-play like most other games, but more in a free-to-trial fashion).

If they make the raids hard enough such that they require scheduled (can’t play when you want) and organized (can’t play with just anyone, needs to be the same people/guild so you make progress) groups, then they are content that effectively doesn’t exist for anyone who doesn’t want to schedule their life around a game.

If I want to play with my friends (in game or in real life) of course I have to schedule to make sure that we are playing at the same time. I you do not want this kind of team play and you are a “solo only” person, than maybe other “game modes” are more suited to your taste.

My major issue with "hard content"

Except those people are still paying for them. Developer time/resources are not infinite (this seems to be what you don’t understand). Raids aren’t just a bonus. They were made in place of something else.

GW2 ist a “package deal” with a lots of different things and game modes. People that do mostly only PvP or WvW and no open-world PvE have to “pay” also for things they do not want to play (open world maps i.e.). And people that do not do PvP have to pay for stronghold. etc. etc.

GW2 has a lot of “game modes” and a player has the choice to choose to play what he/she likes and to not bother about the others.

Raids may be about challenge and adaption on one side, but that also means exklusion by Default.

No it does not. I can check two items on your list for myself and I did raids (in another game) and I never felt social exclusion for myself or others. It really depends only on the people you are playing with.

If you have a fixed group-size of 10 (or 5) and 11 (or 6) players want to play together, one person has to wait outside of the group. That is not social exclusion.

It is social exclusion if the same person can not play because the others do not want him in the group because he plays sylvari (as an example). In that case, he should look for other players, maybe a different guild, to play with.

But this (not so) social behaviour has nothing to do with raids per se.

2. So it is already happening in Dungeons and Fractals, therefore it is justified in raids and should be continued this way? Sounds logical to me…^^

It was not a justification. It was an example that it does not have anything to do with raids but does have everything to do with the people you are playing with.
