Well then they should removed the ability to see other people’s APs your group with in PVE. I liked seeing what rank people were at the end of a match. People use APs to judge in PVE so why not use ranks to judge in PVP?

Apparently Anet (and many others) find PvP’ers with high ranks intimidating. I don’t know why this is. Like you said, no one finds those with high Achievement Points (APs) intimidating and APs are far easier to see than ranks.

But when it comes to PvP – “OMGs, HIDE THE RANKS! I DON’T WANTS TO SEES HOW MUCH HE’S PLAYED!!”

You’re not listening. Pride in skins that you can use in PvP. Previously you could PvE all you wanted, but couldn’t get your stuff into the isolated PvP environment. Did you know this?

This isn’t a betrayal because nothing has been taken away in terms of PvE rewards/money

What has been taken away is prestige. And that is why people play for money and rewards in the first place.

As a sign of protest, I suggest an informal agreement between veteran PvP players to not bring their legendaries into PvP arenas.

Also, let’s all use only rabbit finishers. It might be taking it a bit too far to only use starter gear – though that would be a good one.

New PvE’ers will be all gung ho about their shiny skins and clothing in PvP. And let’s face it – we can’t compete with them on that score. Instead, let’s go in the opposite direction and have only our titles displaying (Legendary Champion etc) while we only wear starter gear.

+1 if you agree to this informal pact.

We all saw this coming miles away. I loved PvP, but there’s nothing in it for me now. Us PvP’ers chose to discard PvE in the hopes of being special in our own isolated world locked away from the legendaries etc of PvE. We thought it was a good deal because PvE’ers could never bring their stuff into the mists. We were betrayed. Now we have nothing, everyone is dragon and random people are bringing in their stuff from PvE.

I get nothing except a tiny bunch of rank up chests with champ loot bags that I could have farmed in Frostgorge in two hours. All our hard work is down the drain.

Can’t bring myself to play after this betrayal.

Moral of the story: Don’t play an MMO that tries to be “different” (aka no grind) because they just hand out stuff for free and don’t value the hard work that others have put in before.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m playing the same game. Who cares what skins PvE players are bringing into PvP. Get this straight, you are NOT a unique and special snowflake because you chose to play PvP, nor were we ever “in our own isolated world locked away” when you can enter the mists at the click of a button. Furthermore, we all knew that playing PvP we were the minority of players that make up the game, we all knew that players could get the same skins we gain in PvP a lot easier/quicker than we could by grinding the ranks, this is nothing new.

This sounds like you have too much envy over what skins players who chose to PvE have gained and you don’t – we chose to PvP, some of them chose to pursue legendaries.

All you seem to do is find something trite to QQ about. What hard work is down the drain from the unification of skins? You have the same skins PvPers had access to bar legendaries and certain forge weapons. Big deal. What else were we ever getting that made our/your/your cousins-sister’s-nephew’s-fathers-former-roomate’s hard work down the drain?

LOL betrayal, get a grip.

The betrayal is this:

We sweated and worked for our skins in PvP where we could distinguish ourselves within PvP itself. Now PvE’ers have their legendaries in PvP and that pride is lost

We get a pittance of champ chests as a “reward” for zooming to r80 where PvE players can just go on a champ train for 2 hrs and get the same amount of champ chests.

The betrayal is this:

High ranked players put in a huge amount of time getting their r55+ ranks and they earned the prestige it bought them along with finishers. Now everyone above r55 is the same and all that hard work is wasted.

In short, the betrayal lies in the loss of prestige that dediacated PvP players have earned over the past 1.5 years. We deserve better than having our hard work eradicated.

Am I the only one who plays PvP for… PvP and not the skins?
I was kinda happy I could use my PvP skins in PvE, lol. I mean, I understand some used the skins as a sort of gratification for the hard work you’ve put in, but I don’t think anything like that “breaks” the game. At least now I can gloat whenever I stomp a PvE hero with his legendary :P

I’m sure a few people exist for whom intrinsic rewards are enough. But well…this is an MMO. The skins and progression are a big part of what draws people to an MMO. So that’s mostly the kind of players we are.

- Because its easier to teach noobs how to play the conquest game.
- Because it teaches that ZERG=BADDDDD.
- It’s a shoe in to Solo Q strategies and Team Q strategies.
- You can see better.
- Less team Stacking.
- Easier to fill 5v5 than 8v8.
- You actually can learn rotations (which is what matters really in PvP atm).
- Because getting steam rolled by team stacking makes people quit the game.
- Because it brings more people in with same skill level to go 5v5 with one another while actually doing something good rather than chase in circles.
- If you’re good, you can actually tell people : “hey do this, cap that, kill this, stay there…” (hard to do in 8v8)
- There’s plenty of other reasons why this change is good.

Looking at your reasons, it’s clear to me that you bother too much with what other people are doing. Focus on what you want to do and then do it.

I don’t bother “that” much. Although I will admit I can go over board sometimes. I just really enjoy big communities of PvP players alike. If removing 8v8 solves the issue that is limiting the community from growing then so be it. Just because you dont care doesn’t mean other people have to be on the same boat as you. It’s clear to me you’re in this for your own gains, which is cool by me, I’m in this for the community (my 2 cents are in yo).

The thing is people enjoy different things. The popularity of 8v8 showed that people were enjoying themselves there. Now you come along and say “No, you have to enjoy yourselves this way instead”. Don’t you think that’s wrong?

I’ve been thinking about it and the math doesn’t add up for me. Each rank at r80 now takes 20k points. If we assume a 50% match win ratio in tPvP that gives us 1000 rank points per match on an average. So we need ~20 matches in tPvP to rank up.

That takes what – 4 or 5 hours of high end play? And at the end of that, we get 5 champ boxes.

If I were to spend those 4-5 hours champ farming in frostgorge, I’m pretty sure I’ll have upward of 500 boxes, so the rewards here seem to be pretty meager.

What am I missing?

Previously this wasn’t an issue because PvP and PvE were separate. Different skins and everything. But now with gear unification and gold being the common currency, doesn’t Anet need to bring parity between various game activities?

Anet.. I love you guys, but you’re insane. I’ve never seen an MMO make ‘maxing’ easier.. We are gamers, we need the carrot on the stick.

And no.. Not random loot chests with typical gear (although I love the track, don’t get me wrong), but end game.

Anet thinks it knows what’s best for us. We want long term carrots and they say “No – I think you should like this instead”.

It has no idea why people play MMO games.

This is my biggest and the only disappointment I’ve had in this game (counting both GW1 and GW2).

Having phoenix in gw1 (Got it after 4 years…….READ AGAIN ANET….4…kittenING…YEARS AND NOONE EVER COMPLAINED BOUT DAT) my only goal was to get it in gw2 too, and i was r69 (10k to 69 exactly) almost getting my beloved bird after thousands of tournaments and hours spent going through this crap pvp. And now every random nab around is spamming dragons everywhere…as i already wrote to grouch: Thank you anet, playing gw since gw1 beta….never wanted to leave (Even is pvp was totally hopeless) but you made me quit in just one patch after 9 years on gw…gratz. I just hope all of this game to sink down now bringing all your awesome ideas with it…and it’s coming..very soon.

Competition? A challenge?

No one plays just for competition or challenge. That’s a good secondary motivation, the primary being loot/shinies, titles, prestige whatever.

Till now I had more ranks and finishers to aim for. But I have difficulty figuring out why exactly I should play. How do I benefit?

It’s very sad really since I like playing PvP. But…I can’t justify spending time on it unless it gives me something I can’t get anywhere else. Until Anet gives more progression for me, I don’t know why I should keep playing.

Players that play the game for over 4 hours a day = getting Dragon is easier than ever before.

Players who have jobs, families, in-person friends and obligations, and who live in a place called reality (90% of GW2 player base), now have realistic pvp goals and achievement milestones.

I don’t see a problem here. Rank is just a status measurement that helps with networking with other players. Competitive PvPers who are looking to get into a team will have a better chance of meeting other like-minded players and establishing these connections if they are more recognizable and well-known — rank is a beginning step to help achieve this status. When you try and stream, for example…nobody wants to watch the rank 12 play hot joins all day. Your chances of gaining viewers are much higher when you’re a rank 80 Dragon playing competitive tournament matches. This is now a realistic goal for people, no longer reserved to the elitist top 0.1%.

tl;dr Elitists, get off your throne and quit sobbing.

Yeah, I miss Orr when it was populated with event farms everywhere. Anet should realize that people like farming. We want to farm and grind and get gold/karma/loot. And has that solved the problem? No. Instead there are champ trains in Frostgorge.

Orr which was supposed to be the toughest content in the game is now deserted. Why? No loot. Without loot, no one cares. People play content to get rewards and loot. Intrinsic motivation is a cool concept, but I don’t care. I want my shinies.

I have absolutely nothing against fighting alongside low ranked players. After all, we were all low ranked at one point of time.

I do wonder though at the wisdom of putting all the low ranks in the same team instead of dividing them equally. But then, the system is based on MMR and not rank which only goes to show how messed up the MMR thing is!

I have no problem either, butt it’s plain obvious that 90% of them are just there to farm (3 ppl going close at the start of the game to get the 10 points so they get the rewards and then just run around feeding the enemy team.)

It’s only in the last few days that it’s been very obvious with the amount of lowbies that you get matched with. I don’t remember ever being matched with a r1, or even a r10 before. Maybe once in a blue moon, butt not every other match lol.

Hey, that’s a good point (pun intended!). Maybe they didn’t care about the outcome of the match and just came to do their dailies. Hmm….

This is ridiculous. Maybe they need to remove dailies from a game mode where other people are relying on your performance…

How do we know you aren’t just terrible and that’s why you got a bad team? Just asking and only semi trolling.

Technically from an MMR point of view it would be the other way around. The system would seek to balance out the average ratings on each side. It’s easy to figure out what that means.

Though I wonder if they take the standard deviation into account.

Everyone thinks that a build which beats them is cheesy. The fact is that if you were to listen to everyone’s opinion of what is “cheese”, then there will be maybe six players in all of PvP who pass muster.

There’s a story about a father and a son taking a donkey into town and they start listening to everyone’s opinion about what they should be doing, who should be sitting on the donkey etc etc. and they finally end up carrying the donkey instead.

PvP is like that. Just a few posts above, a guy rattled of the builds he thinks are “cheese”. It’s all nonsense. A good build is one that gets the job done. End of story. There is no “cheese”.

Few Strategies on Each Map

Temple

1. Before committing to mid, other than the close holder, at least one person should watch out for enemy inc in case they zerg close (same as forest). If you see one inc, they should be delayed till the close holder has time to cap the point. Then you can leave since presumably the close holder can deal with one person while keeping the point capped.

2. Tranq is important, but don’t over commit. We’ve all seen how a devastating long drawn out fight at tranq to win the bonus only leads to the enemy team standing ready to recap. This actually leaves you far worse off. Max two to tranq. Maybe three if you know what you’re doing.

If you see the fight at tranq going south, stand ready outside the circle far and close ready to recap immediately. The enemy team will feel like a fool for over committing.

Kyhlo

1. Same as forest and foefire. Two people should go close in case the enemy team decides to be fancy. The extra person can then easily head over to their treb if no one arrives.

2. Like foefire, hug the railing to make it more difficult for a decapper to remove you. This is not foolproof and given enough time, you will get knocked out especially with pulls. But follow general rule (4) at start and you should be fine. Kyhlo is a nice small map that makes rotation to close quick and easy.

There are lots more, but these are a few off the top of my head…

Few Strategies on Each Map

General rules

1. Always assume your opponents will make the best possible move. Never base your play thinking that they’ll do the wrong thing. This is like chess. You may often win quickly by assuming your opponent will make a mistake. When it works, great. But if they do the right thing, you’re screwed.

2. Avoid complexity, especially if you’re not on a coordinated team. You have to keep it simple. No fancy stuff like “5 to mid!” or “4 to far, 1 to mid!”. Barring the other team being truly worse than you, such strategies require constant communication and are not suitable for soloers.

3. If you have a decapper on your team, leave him alone. Don’t go messing with his rotation, trying to help him etc. Let him die alone in peace tying the enemy up. That’s his job.

4. If there’s a decapper on their team, you simply must have a dedicated DPS class to keep rotating back and helping the close holder to kill him. If you don’t do this, you will lose. End of story. Perfect for this is a thief or a portal mesmer with boon stripping and non condi dps for obvious reasons.

Forest

1. Make sure they don’t zerg close at start. If you’re ready you can win the match right here. But if you’re not, it can badly throw you off balance and you’ll never recover. Before going mid or creature, always check for inc on the side.

2. As a general rule, don’t kill the creature at start. The other side will take mid and you’ll lose momentum and have a psychological handicap that you might never recover from. This is specially true if they have a thief who may try and steal creature. The dedicated close holder is in the best position to kill the creature after the cap and is reasonably sure that there are no incoming players. Or you can kill creature after the mid fight is over.

3. This is a map where one person just has to afk at close. The distance between your close and their spawn point is too short to risk a decap. You must always play as if your enemy will do the smart thing, not assume they’ll play badly and not decap your point as soon as its left undefended.

Again. Never…ever..leave close undefended.

4. Lots of people labor under the illusion that once a point is capped, it will defend itself. Not just close, but even mid. After a long grueling battle to fight for the keep, I’ve seen people just leave it! One person (preferably a heavy) has to always stay on an empty point in case just one person shows up. If more than one person comes, you should have time to call for help or run. Either way, don’t just leave it. Seeing an empty capture point should cause something to die inside your heart.

Foefire

1. The only map where the close holder can help at mid and still keep an eye on close due to the open spaces and direct line of sight. Not much of strategy here. A ranged close holder with AoE like a necro or a grenade engi really shines. So does a berserk ranger. The idea is always to keep an eye on close in case someone comes. On this map you can see them coming a long way off.

2. If you’re winning, ignore the enemy lord. It’s a risk and you don’t want risk. Win on points whenever you can. Go lord only if you’re desperate. It’s a team tactic and if you’re PUG’ing in solo or teamq, avoid complexity.

3. Two people should always go close at start in case the enemy team decides to send one or two people. If no inc on the horizon, the extra can make their way to mid.

4. There is a point on foefire cap points where a decap engi will have difficulty knocking you off. It’s in the cup of the fence on the left facing the point from mid. It’s still possible, but he’ll have to get close to you limiting movement and even then you can out manuever. It’s still possible for him to pull you and then knock you off, but this requires a lot more skill and they may not be able to pull it off.

Does anyone use the chat as a way to influence the enemy team’s strategy?

For example, I sometimes cap their close undefended close point and say something like “Thank you red/blue team for leaving your point undefended”. This usually relieves some pressure at mid as the enemy team either sends two or three to the point (by which time I’m long gone), or (I’m guessing) screams at their “close holder” to not just leave the point, thereby getting some more favorable odds for us elsewhere on the map.

I’m thinking of other psychological tactics by saying stuff like “I think one red/blue team player is afk”. This isn’t easily verifiable and can cause the others to lose heart and the battle in the mind is already lost.

It’s an awesome idea. But based on what I’ve been observing all this while, there are those who are against any type of truly long term/unlimited progression of any sort. The reasoning usually goes something like “Casuals are going to get intimidated by the huge tiers and will quit PvP out of hopelessness especially when they see other having those titles they can never get”.

Personally I can’t understand this kind of attitude, but some seem to feel that we can’t have nice things unless every single person can achieve them soon.

And yeah – unless you are a decap engi, you have no business going far. And if there’s a decap engi on your team don’t go and help! He doesn’t want assistance. His job is to survive as long as possible, die, rinse and repeat. The rest of the team focuses on other points instead.

I fail to see how his rank on the LB means anything. Most high rank peeps agree to say the LB are meaningless so…

Cultural armor from glory turned out to be a ripoff.

Didn’t / Wolnt advance emperor title and all it gives you after the patch is a wardrobe unlock that you will still have spend more money to pay charges to actually use. So you had to spend a lot of gold and a lot of glory and you have to spend a lot more gold to actually use it.

Looks like after the patch we’ll be able to select which reward track we work towards and get that as a reward. They mentioned dungeon tokens as one reward track, the new backpack as another reward track.

You can salvage the armor and get really rare weapon skins from the resulting tokens. It’s what I did…

How are they getting cheated out of rank chests when they’ve already had them? They aren’t getting any less rank chests than someone who is being boosted after the 15th

Just a thought that came to me.
No-one begrudges people who played GW1 for getting their achievements. They worked hard for them. So why are people begrudging people from getting their achievements in GW2, through this cap? The argument that anet is doing me a favor with this cap, i find quite frankly patronizing, that it will somehow free up my time to do other things. Actually, they are probably correct in that aspect on reflection. On some of the low ebbs, the daily/monthly is the only thing that made me play the game, and my garden could use some TLC!

Agreed. In general I’ve noticed that Anet doesn’t want others to get jealous of how many rewards long term players are getting. They seem to dislike the very idea of super long term goals.

Maybe they feel casuals should not get intimidated. Crazy if you ask me. You get rewarded for the time you put into the game. You’ve earned it. Too bad for those who don’t have it.

In this case, the rewards I “knew” I would be getting would be a higher rank than players who have played less. The reward for me is prestige and having a finisher that people who have played less than me don’t have.

It’s hard to argue that high ranked players are not being screwed out of their just reward no?

Personally I would want the “cause” to be supported on its merits – that of players getting screwed out of their time investment. It doesn’t matter whether people like those or hate those getting screwed. It’s a matter of principle. Even though I’m not (yet) personally affected by these rank changes since I’m just r53, I fight against injustice whenever I see it.

I fight because tomorrow I may be the victim and I would like others to rally around my cause based on the principle alone. This is not a legal thing. No one can take Anet to court over it. It’s just a wrong thing to do. What else is there to say?

As for jealousy, what other emotion can you attribute to people who oppose a change even when that change means nothing to them? What rational person is so set against something when they are in no way affected by it? How does r70s getting proper compensation take away anything from the other people? These are not the actions of purely rational people. There is obviously another irrational motive that I can only ascribe to jealousy. I would be willing to revise my theory if another better fitting motive is provided.

And as for what rewards I think are justified, at the very least r70 players should get one chest for each time they would have ranked up over 80. I mean, who can argue against the fairness of that?

I was wondering how will we be able to acquire skins from pvp after the patch? I know there will be tracks where you unlock dungeon skins and some extra “pvp only” skins, but what will happen to “rank” skins that we can acquire right now?

Right now we can get rank skins by buying rank chests with glory or crafting them, but with the patch all crafting mats will be removed and all glory/vendors will be removed. How will we get all the skins that are available to certain ranks, like cultural armor? I believe right now T1 cultural is available for rank 60+, T2 70+ and T3 80 (from chests or crafting). Will the only way to get cultural armor be from buying them with gold? Same question for other rank armor/weapons.

I still have around 300k glory and not sure what to spend them on. I was thinking maybe getting a T3 cultural set, but not sure if it’s worth it if we’ll be able to get cultural armor some other way than spending gold on it.

But cultural armor. After the patch the only way you’ll be able to get it is by spending double the amount of gold. Or you can craft dyes in the forge.

I’m not understanding this. You can only get max 10 points or something from the dailies every day. What does Anet mean by putting a cap of 10,000 points?

How do you get that much every day?
