Teamfighting: Who To Focus and Target?

in PvP

While pugging, I would personally focus on these easy targets if within reach.

1. Ranger
2. Mesmer
3. Thief

You’re right in that the last two will stealth when in trouble. However, as a mesmer I have phantasms that can track through stealth so it’s not really a problem. The damage will be enough either to kill them or drive them away.

And I don’t press “Ctrl+T” to focus a target. I solo all the time and I find teammates rarely follow the targeting icon. So I just do it quietly by myself.

I’d like some really long term meaningful PvP only rewards. Long term as in it will take around a year (or more) to obtain. The reward could be anything unique – a mini, a precursor, a title, some skin.

As long as it’s tough to achieve, and takes a long time to get, I’ll be happy. The current reward tracks are too easy – anyone can do them. I’d like something to demonstrate real dedication to the game.

Instead, we can have something like GW1, where you could save lists of pre-made builds and simply switch between them in seconds.

Even better, those builds will have codes that others can put up on the Internet. Copy/paste the codes and voila! You now have the same build.

Builds are more relevant than classes. The idea is that EVERY class should have a build to counter EVERY other build. Or at least, have a decent chance against it.

If a certain class has NO build for a specific encounter, then that’s a problem. Does such a situation exist?

The problem with “prestige” items like Llamas is that they’re not really available to solo players. I wish Anet would stop worshiping pre-mades so much. The rest of us are players too you know.

Then form a team ?

Last i checked PvP is a team based mode, if you want the prizes put in some effort.

I join a team as a solo player. Like most of the Guild Wars 2 player base. Just because I join solo does not mean I don’t play as a team when the game starts.

Okay, so you won the fight. I don’t care if it was 1vs1, 1vs2, 2vs2,3vs3, whatever. But please keep your sweet mouth SHUT. No more “Lol, easy” or “noob” anymore. It’s rude, and you’re a detriment to the community. And for gods sake, have some respect for your opponents. You are the worst this game has to offer.

I wouldn’t say “lol, easy” but I’ve definitely said “lol” by itself. There are many instances where a player’s fight style or behavior is strange, idiotic or just funny. Like:

1. A ranger not realizing his confusion stacks while killing himself with autoattacks

2. A ranger’s arrows getting reflected back either killing himself or knocking himself back over a ledge

3. A thief who can’t kill you, but spends all their time in stealth while the point happily ticks in my favor (not all thieves mind you – the really dangerous ones are no laughing matter)

4. A necro getting lich reflected back to them – no bonus for guessing what happens

5. Your opponent dying while being pecked to death by a moa

6. When someone misrecognizes my build and says idiotic stuff like “kitteng PU mesmer” when I’ve never played PU in my life

7. Ditto above when as a warrior I get up from downed state and by pure chance have the kill effect removed when I stomp and the other guy says “Ugh, you have that noob trait”!

8. Thieves killing themselves on retaliation (or rangers)

9. Thief getting insta-gibbed by phantasms when he exits from stealth

There are many other situations I’ve encountered in my ~3 years of play and I’m sure I’ve forgotten lots of them.

There’s no need for them to be in the mists together or anything, just let them fight in the same arena. I don’t see how that would use up any significant resources since you’re not transferring anything over – just standard PvP buillds.

I don’t think you understand how the system works.

Every arena is going to be based in either EU or NA. If they mixed the arenas, then this would create a significant disadvantage for people playing in the opposing region since they would all suffer from a higher ping.

Actually I live in the US and play on an EU server (historical reasons and I’m too cheap to transfer!) . I’ve been PvP’ing from the start and don’t really face any ping issues.

Imo, as long as the server rules don’t say otherwise play what you want.
There are different servers with different rules. Angz is usually the most popular duel server and has more specific (& restricting) rules. However, it’s not uncommon to see it full around prime time / you never get in to fight. That leads to people trying to enforce these rules on other servers too, some even think these are the official duel rules everyone must follow everywhere. Got in some arguments about that as well. I usually tell people to check the server rules. There’s no reason other than courtesy to fight how your opponent wants you to.

Did you try contacting the server owner? Maybe he can help in that matter.

Let me see if I can contact the owner. Thanks!

“PvP only armor”

You mean like http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Glorious_armor and http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Glorious_Hero%27s_armor ?

Ranks have never had anything at all to do with prestige since the only thing it ever did was show that you had spent much time.

Come, getting that armor is easy. Compare that to a full r80 armor – which I doubt anyone would have received even by now. That is a real goal. One worth spending time on.

It’s a big weird actually. Anet (and a lot of people on the forums) are always complaining about “splitting the PvP population”, and how there aren’t enough players etc etc. Seems like allowing geographic regions to play with each other would be perfectly ideal. It would double the population at one stroke (triple if you include China).

There’s no need for them to be in the mists together or anything, just let them fight in the same arena. I don’t see how that would use up any significant resources since you’re not transferring anything over – just standard PvP buillds.

Anet seems to be confused about “prestige” in PvP. First they nerf ranks because people were crying while seeing much higher ranked players, and they opened up PvP armor and weapons to PvE items.

Now they suddenly want to introduce “prestige” items like Llamas…wut? If you wanted to allow us prestige, simply bring back ranks, PvP only armor and call it quits.

What is this mixed messaging?

So I joined a duel arena on my mesmer today after reading the rules: http://imgur.com/sq6lhLH .

But after I started fighting, I was told that celestial amulets aren’t allowed. As you can see from the rules, the only thing mentioned is that armor shouldn’t be above 2500 – which it wasn’t.

So in general do you guys not use celestial amulet in dueling, or was it likely to have been a deliberate omission?

Blind Animation Doesn't Clear Immediately

in PvP

Posted by: bhagwad.4281

bhagwad.4281

As a mesmer, blinds are a pretty big deal for me, and it’s why I run mantra of resolve to immediately get rid of them. The instant cast means that I clear it off as soon as it hits.

But since it’s not guaranteed to clear blind (if there are other condis), I need to either:

1. Look at the conditions bar
2. Evaluate the “darkness” on the screen
3. Look at the foggy cloud animation on my character

Of the three, the last is the quickest. Believe it or not, a fight with a thief lasts no more than 7-8 seconds with the outcome being decided either way and I really don’t have time to search my condis bar for the “blind” icon.

The problem is that the animation doesn’t always clear up as soon as blind is removed (usually within a second thanks to mantras). This confuses me even though intellectually I know I just removed it.

It’s not a huge huge deal – but it’s an extra distraction in a high stakes game with a thief where it all comes down to whether or not I can get my illusions up in time and not having them wasted by blinds.

Has anyone else noticed this bug?

Unethical… really? That’s funny. What makes it unethical?

Also, VoIP just cuts out typing but still does the same thing, communication. As far as knowing an increase is coming to a point just take a glance at the radar and see that. Hell most of the time people in VoIP are just talking bullkitten not actual game breaking strategy.

But you know what I think in unfair. Having a better computer and internet connection than me. Being less resistant due to having a better socio-economic position is unethical and unfair. What do you say to that?

Anet already mentions optimum PC stats on their website. So it’s all up front and in writing. And if you say that VoIP cuts out typing, I would say that macros simply cut out having to press several keys instead of one. Yet macros are deemed cheating. Did you wonder why?

I can’t believe you are arguing this point. All the top teams in NA and EU use voice coms. All tournament teams use voice coms, it’s not cheating bud.

What you’re saying boils down to “It’s being done so it’s ok”. Maybe it’s time to rethink this then? Maybe it’s time Anet stops a blatantly unfair practice solely because it is unfair?

Or just separate the queues and let solo players live in peace.

Buddy, anet knows teams are on voice coms. It’s not a secret. I’m sure a net would encourage it, and I’m absolutely sure they don’t consider it unfair or cheating. If it was cheating they would have to ban everyone who plays in tournaments, most of the wvw community, and many others (including me and my whole guild).

Competitive team video games will have people using voice coms. It’s essential if you want your team to be well coordinated.

That’s exactly my point. Maybe it’s time Anet rethought their policy on VoIP. If you look at it logically, objectively, it’s no different from using macros – which is very obviously cheating.

Or like I said, create a soloq. At least then those with an unfair advantage only play against each other.

And what is the huge benefit of party play? Why is it superior to non-party play?

Well, it’s a team game, so an actual team is going to be better than 5 random. This is a team game, not a solo one. Anyone who is sensible or serious about pvp should be looking to form teams.

I’ve been playing with a mesmer main lately, and we’ve been able to do some great portal plays. It’s transformed the whole game and added a new tactical level. Awesome stuff, cool guy as well.

When we say “solo”, we’re not requesting dueling. 5 randoms together still makes it a team game.

If you don’t want bad profession stacking, or bad players, form a team to queue with. For the second time.
:)

Forming a team is like cheating. It’s an unfair advantage.

Are you joking…

What would you call it if not an unfair advantage over those players who don’t team up? Does teaming up require skill? No. So by definition, the advantage is unfair.

Yes it requires social skills. Also cheating is breaking the rules not just creating an unfair advantage. Speedhacks are cheating, forming a party is not. By your definition all those guys who fought in real wars from fortified positions were cheating.

http://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/introducingthe-scrub

If the other side didn’t have fortified positions to begin with, then yes o course it’s cheating. With the difference that in real war, cheating is allowed. Forming a pre-made team going up against non-premades? That’s just a very low thing to do.

No, it’s not cheating because cheating is breaking the rules. War doesn’t have rules so there is no cheating. The game only ques as it ques. Forming a party or not and how it matches you is up to the algorithm not the players pressing the button to que up. This whole notion of it being cheating is based on breaking rules you have artificially created in your own head.

Nuh uh. Let’s look at VoIP chat. The game doesn’t allow that functionality inbuilt does it? So by resorting to an external third party VoIP tool, you are garnering an unfair advantage beyond the confines of the game. Much like a macro.

I guess you’re saying that me using macros to speed things up would be ok then right?

Your premise is flawed on the assumption that having a party means being on VoIP. Which it doesn’t because not everyone partied up is using VoIP.

Still to answer your question is no it’s not cheating. The developers of them game know that people will use VoIP when they party PvP. I mean that’s pretty much a given, duh. As far as using a macro goes. I don’t really see how a macro will help you win at PvP. I mean, it’s pretty much 15 buttons that each do a single thing. If you want to use a macro to execute a combo of those key presses they do have gaming keyboards that have single press programmable macro buttons. Another thing I’m sure the game developers knew existed. I guess you could use it for typing stuff into team chat. I also did see one guy running a macro and it didn’t exactly make him OP.

As far as I am concerned using a macro to speed things up is no more cheating than having a better computer, faster internet connection or using a gaming mouse for better precision and speed.

No, macros are against the Terms and Conditions of Anet – like in the earlier days years ago, I remember thieves used to pull of insane combos too fast for a normal human being to do the same.

And I think it’s pretty clear that if the developers wanted people to talk to one another they would have offered a VoIP service – even for soloq so that teammates can talk to each other.

From a logical point of view, there is no difference between VoIP and a macro. Both are outside the regular tools provided in-game and constitute an unfair advantage.

I have never used macros so I don’t know much about them and them being disallowed in the Terms of Service. As far as VoIP goes them not providing a program for it doesn’t mean it is against the rules, elsewise they would have put that in the ToS as well. Either way QQ more about it scrub, I don’t care.

So basically anything they omit makes it ethical to use? Everyone knew macros were wrong, even before Anet banned people and put it in their terms and conditions. You don’t wait to be explicitly told something before you stop doing it. Sometimes you just do the right thing.

And VoIP is as big – if not more – of an advantage than macros.

For some reason, people here seem to think that VoIP coordinated team based play is superior to solo play. Does it require more skill? No. It’s just another playstyle – and one which a lot of people don’t like.

This is why earlier, Arenanet used to give higher rewards for TeamQ. They seem to feel that those who team up beforehand deserve more…for what reason I don’t know.

As long Metabattle the builds judged only by the readiness for VoIP Premades in tournaments there is no reason to use them for a solo player. For solo players are “Meta” sub-optimal, since there are much better Builds.

Are you telling me that a cele engi or a shoutbow warrior is useless for soloQ? That makes no sense.

Also, would you mind linking one of these über effective solo builds?

A shoutbow warrior might not be useless per se for soloQ. What is undeniable however, is that a shoutbow’s potential is maximized in an organized team. For the support, a shoutbow sacrifices damage. Normally that is more than made up for by the super awesome might boosts and condi heals.

In soloQ, those advantages will probably not be utilized. Hence, the trade offs seem much worse.

Instead of that, simply separate soloq and teamq. Problem solved. But keep rewards the same, otherwise soloers like me will simply go to the team queue again to get the higher benefits.

How about a new approach? Let’s say, having an unranked queue where players from 1 to 3 people can queue together, and having a ranked queue with only full premades? That way, we would have a more serious queue, where premades wouldn’t be forced to play against pugs and their lame rotations, and a more casual queue where players wouldn’t be forced to face full premades.

Notice that in this system, queuing with 4 people wouldn’t be possible. I have always thought that queuing in a 4-man was really problematic, because it’s sensibly stronger than a 2-3 team, and sensibly weaker than a 5-man team.

What’s the reason for the split up? The mentality of a soloq is that we know there is 0 pre arranged coordination. Even if 2 people team up, that’s a problem I think.

Why do people NOT run meta?

in PvP

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that the “meta” builds are heavily geared towards coordinated team play. However, as someone who solos exclusively, I prefer to not rely on my team mates at all. This doesn’t mean I don’t try and work with the team whenever possible, it just means that the build I run can in no way rely on others – either helping them, or taking help from them.

This is not the same as working together on the fly. It just means my build is not team oriented. My play will obviously try to take advantage of the presence of others.

Builds that help others are crippled when there is no coordination. When there is no one to benefit from your shouts, when there is no one to burst down if you immobilize the other guy. All this leads to frustration.

Solo queue’ers run builds that are “selfish” in this regard. And the “meta” builds are all geared towards great team comps.

For the sake of my blood pressure, I do not run anything except “selfish” builds in PvP.

Hammer/LB for Point Defender?

Well try it, it’s not a build that requires too much practice to get the hang of. :P Btw I found Celestial amulet better than Soldiers, you could use like Geomancy/Doom on LB for some extra conditions.

But honestly I wouldn’t really try to play a dedicated point defender if I were you, being mobile and constantly rotating between points/fights is a lot more efficient than bunkering and dying to DPS pressure from 2-3 people anyhow.

Yeah, I don’t just want to bunker – but I want to know that I can be a pain to get rid of and hold out for a little while till (if) help arrives, and to contribute to a team fight. But I also want to be able to go to other points and help there too.

I’ve played against traditional hambows a lot in the past as a mesmer and engineer. The thing is that I’ve never really felt very threatened by them. I was wondering if the standard hambow build has even “moderate damage” to be dangerous.

Or maybe I haven’t really met good hambows who can put out damage?

As a warrior, I want to fulfill the following role:

1. Be able to tank a bit in group fights (either via vit/toughness or by CC)

2. Moderate damage – I don’t expect huge burst, but just enough damage to be dangerous if someone gets too careless around me.

3. Useful in a group fight, but not entirely support based. Right now, I feel the shoutbow is a bit too support oriented for me. Sure, my teammates greatly benefit from my shouts, condi clears, and might, but my usefulness goes down dramatically if I’m alone. And since I solo all the time, I can’t guarantee that my teammates will be around to back me up.

Bottom line: I don’t want to be selfish, but I don’t want a build that is heavily geared towards helping team mates.

I was thinking about the hammer with its AoE CC and weakness. But I was wondering if it fits my other parameters, namely moderate damage and decent tankiness. I’ve never played a hammer warrior, so here’s asking the experienced community for their thoughts…

Finally if there is any other build/class that fits my description above, I’d appreciate any opinions.

Shoutbow - Why Sword and not Axe

in Warrior

Very interesting! So it seems the sword’s benefits are thus:

1. Bleeds (condi damage)
2. Mobility
3. Saves burst for LB

Gives me some motivation to improve with the sword instead of taking the easy way out with the axe. It’s all about rotating and landing final thrust.

Thanks for the help!

Shoutbow - Why Sword and not Axe

I don’t have much experience with the warrior in PvP, so I’m asking for the opinions of those who know better than me.

I like how the shoutbow plays in PvP, but it seems to me that the axe has better burst damage with its f1 skill no? Right now, landing Final Thrust with the sword is a bit tough since my toon stays still while activating it and people don’t stand still in PvP.

Also, my intelligence charges are consumed by the fire fields, so I need to use Final Thrust as soon as possible. Right now, I use Savage Leap as a gap closer before Final Thrust, but there’s a good chance that my Intelligence charges would have been used up, thanks to the fire field.

Won’t Eviscerate make it easier to proc a critical since it’s also a gap closer on its own?

I guess the advantage of the sword is that Final Thrust is not a burst skill so we get to use the huge AoE of the longbow burst more often. Is that the reason why the Shoutbow uses the sword over the axe?
