At the very least include an AFK option in the reporting screen…that way if two or more people report it, it’s a very strong indication that it’s happening. As of now, we can’t even do that.

And yeah, I was talking about intentional in-game AFK due to raging etc..

It should be pretty easy to measure inactivity. The game already does this if you don’t move till the start of a match saying you’ll be kicked in 50 seconds etc etc. I’m pretty sure the code for detecting AFK can’t be that complicated. The system can raise flags and maybe someone can verify it before assigning dishonorable points.

Seriously, going deliberately AFK is a betrayal of your team. And I’m not talking about hotjoin, but team q.

To be honest, rank is much more meaningful than personal score. In fact, if a person has a very high personal score in a match, I would be deeply suspicious about their contribution to the team. Unless they did some awesome trebbing etc.

Also, +1 to equalizing the rewards for team and solo q. It’s the only reason why I solo in team q. Which is kind of a crazy system.

Ah, totally forgot I can solo queue up for TeamQ. How do I check if a premade team that I’ve recently faced is already in another match?

What I do is I add one team member as a friend. You can then see their location and as soon as they’ve entered another PvP map, I queue up. Maybe there’s another way to do it. If so, I’d like to know!

I think its too easy to blame luck or lack thereof. Far better for yourself to look critically at your own gameplay, even when youre teammates make a lot of mistakes. And 16 or 22 game losing streaks dont happen due to lack of luck tbh.

With that said; its hard to judge the issue without seeing the actual games. Might be an idea to set up a stream maybe, so people can help you out.

No matter how bad he may have been, no one can lose 16 games in a row like that. It’s not a question of skill. Clueless teammates with a limited number of players and two or three premades into the mix are a more likely explanation.

Solo Q not "Serious" Enough

MMR does take care of this to an extent, the thing is, to play solo Q at a higher level you have to well… play solo Q. At higher MMR ratings (usually 90th percentile or around there) most of the people you play with will be there to win. Because Solo Queue has entirely separate ratings from team queue, if you just hop into a solo Q match with a very low solo queue MMR, you are going to find those newbie players who think that solo queue is basically hotjoin with better rewards. Play a few matches, and if you are skilled enough you will end up in the higher MMR brackets where you belong, and will begin to find likeminded players.

I get that. I used to be reasonably high up in solo q till I thought to myself…why am I doing solo q when I can do team q and get 33% better rewards? It’s true that I occasionally meet up with premades, but I’ve gotten smart now. After facing a premade, I check to see if they’re in another match before I queue up again. I’d rather not use this workaround, but…well I have no choice

Also the skyhammer map is just irritating. I say this despite being an engi with a lot of knockbacks.

I like the idea of solo q. I just wish the devs made it more viable into something I would actually benefit from as much as team q.

I prefer to PvP alone. But in teamq instead of soloq. Why? Because:

1. There is a higher quality of play in team q
2. No skyhammer

Unfortunately sometimes in tPvP I run into premades and though I know it’s teamq, it’s almost like they’re cheating. It’s just a feeling without any rational basis. Because team q has become the new solo q and I just get used to playing alone there. Decent level of play (often enough) and…no skyhammer (retch!).

And of course, much higher rewards!

So what can be done to correct this? What can be done to restore solo q to what it used to be – namely a place where serious solo pvp’ers go to play ranked matches? And by “serious”, I mean play to win. No dual capping points, good in-chat communication (never as good as ts of course, but communication is still important), decent role and map awareness where we don’t face premades.

Also, the rewards have to be as good as team q naturally otherwise why would anyone go solo q?

Wasn’t MMR supposed to take care of this stuff automatically?

Thumper’s working well. I overcharge it immediately on deployment and squeeze two launches out of it. Then I pick it up immediately for a CD of 37 seconds. Compared to Big ol bomb with a recharge of 27 seconds, that’s not bad at all. An extra chain launch for a 10 seconds difference. Still may need to tweak a bit though. Let’s see.

You’re right. Testing it in HotM gives me two launches. Very interesting! I tested the various durations and it seems to be very close to two attacks. If I active it immediately after an attack, it launches only once. But if I wait for 1 second after a regular attack, it launches twice.

Could you clarify? From what I remember, it has a 3 second hit rate. Overcharging it means the next hit will be a launch right? So you’re saying it launches twice when you overcharge it? And what’s the gap between the two overcharge launches?

i am using thumper turret, it knockbacks 2 times when overcharged and once destroyed, only the cd is bugging me but its fine considering those r 3 aoe knockbacks in one utility:p

Whether or not the turret dies isn’t very relevant, because you trait it to AoE knock back when it is destroyed.

I doubt if a simple knockback when it does is good enough to justify an entire slot. After all, the recharge is what…50 seconds or something right? That’s huge. You have to look at the opportunity cost. What are you giving up? Minekit? That’s a guaranteed 27 second AoE launch. Toolkit? The 3 second block every 16 seconds can be crucial. Flamethrower? A 15 second instant knockback that also has blind on it almost as a stunbreaker.

So it’s not a question of whether or not thumber knocks back when destroyed. It’s a question of whether or not it outclasses the other utility skills.

You want a place with no living story, major world bosses or dungeons. Thus:

  1. Ebonhawk
  2. Straights of Devastation (This does have balthazar, but it’s like never up)
  3. Lornar’s Pass
  4. Brisban Wildlands
  5. Hirathi Highlands

Would HotM load faster than these? It should be easy to test, but there may be other factors influencing the results that I can’t control…

Even with the AR nerf, decappers are still kitten strong. I’ve been using the classic minekit, flamethrower, rifle and toolkit and it’s still very good.

But I’ve been coming up against a few decappers using thumper turret as well. I tried it, but the turret dies way too fast especially if the other guy has stability (naturally). So what are the views of the engi community on this? Is the “classic” decapper still superior to the ones using turrets now?

Often I need to change chars when I see the enemy team’s comp. But for some strange reason instead of sending my new char straight to the PvP map, Anet sees it fit to first send me to some irrelevant PvE map or the HotM. I’ve had 1 minute loading times only to immediately be sent to my final destination (this was gendarran fields).

For this reason, I want to park all my toons in the fastest loading map possible to minimize this downtime. So which is the fastest loading map in your opinion?

I know that anecdotal evidence counts for squat. But…to my surprise and complete disbelief, I got a precursor yesterday from one of the PvP bags – Rodgort’s Flame. True, it’s probably the cheapest precursor out there but I’d never expected to see one drop in my lifetime.

But like I said, this means nothing. There could be a 1 in a bazillion chance of me getting a prec and I could get one 10 times in a row, so pinch of salt etc etc.

The fact that you even bothered to look at personal score is an indicator of something.

For example, I sometimes play a decap engi. And I often end up carrying my team hard. Do you know what my personal score is? Neither do I, since I never look but it wouldn’t be more than 50 or even 20 depending on how many times I got the decap.

Your personal score is a completely useless indicator. We all started not knowing much, so there’s no need for people to be kitten you for not knowing better. But just for future reference, never let your eyes stray to the “personal score” section. It’s an embarrassment.

8 months ago. My very first PvP game. Hot join of course.

Haven’t played MMO before. I had no idea what I’m doing, I had a vague idea about my class and absolutely no idea about the other classes.

First, I thought I have to be level 80 to start PvP. So I got it and went to hot join. DPS guardian ftw. I’ll never forget the adrenaline rush. Started my first game, captured a point.

Then a bunch of enemies started to appear from everywhere. Like whole the opposite team was on my point! I was spinning around with my greatsword like crazy, killing them one by one, omg I killed them all and kept the point for my team! I felt so proud!

It took me about a week to understand I’ve killed only one mesmer.

I think to even things out a bit, a requirement for crafting a legendary should be to reach r80 in PvP. That way, PvE’ers have to do some PvP’ing just like we have to slog out useless PvE stuff.

I guess he meant something like, there are other things to farm, that are easier to obtain, like the class specific titles. After having done all other things, this will be the last title to do and will have increased naturally already, so that he can concentrate on it then.
When somebody would make stepping stones, he might forget about other titles and work toward that one.

The closest game for me was 499-500 in our favor. We had two points capped in foefire and mid was theirs, but they were going to win since they were 497 or something and we were just 485. Just a few more seconds before game over. A fight was going on between their bunker ranger and one guy from our team. It was dead lost. No way we could kill their guy in time.

I was playing my engi and had just respawned. I was approaching mid and everyone knows how tough it is to knock someone off such a huge point. Luckily they were fighting closer to the edge than usual. I swapped to toolkit, magnet’d the ranger off the point, turned around and overcharged shot’d him away and immobilized with net shot.

The point decapped…in slow motion I swear! Their score kept ticking…498…499…and just before their score hit 500, the point decapped! We had two caps, they had none and we easily won through.

I swear to you that my teammates would have wanted to have my babies at that point

Anyone who reaches 80 would have been able to farm at least two legendaries in PvE during the same time. It’s ridiculous to suggest that a mere precursor is too much to ask. Crazy, crazy.

And yes please! +1 for ranks above 80. Anything to show greater progression.

Bottom line question. How do you differentiate a person who reached r80 yesterday vs someone who reached it 1 year ago? In other words, what visual identification separates a long time PvP’er vs a new one? In PvE we have AP’s. In PvP…what?

The only thing I can think of right now is may be laurels. I have tons of them (figuratively speaking of course). Since PvP’ers never spend their laurels, this would be a “cheat” way to find out who is a long time PvP’er and who isn’t.

New players have no intention to learn sPvP.

Read Anet’s post about how we should “mentor” newer players. And people need to drop their ego. It doesn’t matter if they ask for help or not. And if they don’t listen and the game is lost because of it, then no one has the right to complain about “toxic” behavior in game.

After hitting r80, does the system keep track of how many rank points you’ve gained, how many times you’ve leveled up etc? Granted as of now there’s not much point for this data, but I’m hopeful in the future they’ll bring out some sort of title/skin/reward whatever for those who’ve gotten a lot more than the required r80…

Previously of course I could see my cumulative points in the PvP achievements tab since I was far away from legendary champion. But now that it’kitten, does the system still have that data hidden away somewhere?

Chained Loading Screens

Sometimes when you’ve dc’d or switching to another character, one screen loads all the way only to immediately switch to the “final” one. I’m guessing there’s a lot of overhead to load the HoTM map – the NPCs, players, etc. which all goes to waste when we’re headed to another destination immediately.

I’m thinking it would be more efficient if they just sent us the final screen instead. Occasionally the initial loading screen can take upto 45 seconds…which can mean a lot if you’re dc’d in the middle of a match.

I’ve always been a fan of leaderboards. Most kills, most caps, most wins, etc. This is definitely something that would keep me motivated. What about you?

Leaderboards don’t make me happy because they’re temporary. Your character doesn’t “progress”…unless it’s a leaderboard that tracks constantly increasing points.

For example, PvE has achievement leaderboards: https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/eu/achievements

I would be very happy with this with PvP rank points instead of achievements, but a title to show ff varying tiers would be ideal.

I meant a permanent leaderboard So you could see who has the most wins, kills, captures total from the beginning of the game.

I think it’s no secret that PvP’ers got badly hit by this patch. Some say “Well, something’s better than nothing!”. To which the obvious response is that previously PvP and PvE were separate. Now that the gear has been merged for the two, it’s far worse.

Question – how do you tell a veteran PvP player from a veteran PvE player? So far, only titles. Nothing else. Thank god for small mercies I guess.

In the old system there was no gear unification between PvE and PvP. So yes even though the rewards were lesser previously, they were better because they were exclusively PvP and you couldn’t bring PvE inside the sanctum of PvP.

This is obviously worse because after gear unification there is no reward that you can’t obtain faster in PvE. And it matters because of the crossover. Previously it didn’t.

Illusionary Duelist, Phantasmal Swordsman, Phantasmal Mage, Phantasmal Defender, Phantasmal Disenchanter, Phantasmal Rogue, Phantasmal Warlock, Illusionary Mariner, Illusionary Whaler, Phantasmal Berserker, and Phantasmal Warden: These skills must now be cast in line-of-sight of the target. These skills now behave as normal attacks that the mesmer must connect in order to summon the phantasm, and they will fail if the mesmer is blind or the ability is cast on an invulnerable target.

Blind,dodge and all evade abilities like a Pistol Whip or Blurred Frenzy dont work on Mesmer phantoms spells. We evade spell DMG but phantom is summoned = bug.

Of course I want to compete for rewards. But I don’t just want to compete for rewards. I want to spend a couple of hours in PvP and tell myself in the end “Well, that wasn’t a waste. I’ve now progressed to xyz rank or am xyz closer to that special PvP only reward”.

Again – not a zero sum game.

Excellent idea. Exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about! The PvP exclusive part is important otherwise there’s no telling whether you got it from PvP or PvE.

Wins or losses in a sPvP are hardly ever caused by a player who is awesome at fighting. It’s all about rotation, coordination, and communication. Dragon finishers have show off value now, but because progression comes to a halt with it, it’s just a matter of time before it’s not rare anymore.

Basically where do I go from here in terms of progression?

Yes and when you improve you do not just improve your fighting skills, but rotation, co-ordination and communication.

And like I’ve said many, many times the leader boards are going to be our progression, getting high up on the leader board can (and in the future, most likely will) be the source of rewards for PvP. PvE is the place where you GRIND for rewards, PvP is the place where you COMPETE for rewards, after all its a competitive game mode.

If leaderboard rankings are not permanent, that’s not “progression”. If I can be No. 1 today and No. 10 tomorrow, that’s demotion and goes against the very idea of character progression.

Leaderboards are an add on. There is also no rule that I’m aware of that says PvE is the ONLY place where you grind for rewards. GW1 PvP had long term grindy rewards and no one complained. I’ve noticed a lot of people repeatedly claim that only PvE should be grindy without any substantiation especially when there are examples to the contrary.

More to the point, why can’t we have both? I keep bringing this up to challenge this zero sum game mentality. As if Anet has to have one or the other!

A “feeling of improvement” cannot be passively displayed as an achievement. Without a title, or a skin, the feeling itself is meaningless since the whole idea is to have the progression easily visible to other people. Otherwise for me, there’s no point in having the feeling.

How does having other long term goals harm anyone? You say it spreads out the focus. Does it matter? Some people like me will aim for them. Those who don’t like it won’t aim for them.

So far, I see zero downside to having both types of rewards no?

I’m pretty sure that is showing that you have improved at the game. is that not enough for you? well it doesn’t matter because im sure Anet will add finishers, titles and skills for people who are at the top of the leader board. anything that can be farmed will not be anything meaningless, look at pve, legendaries are meaningless, rank 50 were meaningless because skyfarmer and hj farmer.
you will never get anything meaningful if you can get them through farming.
you should go win that legend tournament, that will be truely meaningful.

I disagree. Farming requires work and is very meaningful for me. Try taking away the legendaries from PvE’ers by saying “Oh, you just farmed them!” and see how kittened off they will be

I love farming. And if can have fun along with farming, that’s the perfect combination. Ultimately I chose to play an MMO like GW2 because farming has been a constant in MMOs right from day 1. And as a former GW1 player, farming was an integral part of that game.

If Anet takes away farming, I can assure you most of the player base will quit.

Improving your level of skill is your progression, you are in a competitive game mode, you are against other player. This is why leader boards are the progression and the reward is the feeling of improvement, being better than other players and being the best at your class. These should be your goals, not some number saying you have played for a while.

Look at LoL is has no progression like ranks in GW2 PvP, you dont get a skin as a reward in LoL just for playing X amount of game. The progression is going up the ranks and the reward is “im better than xx% of this games population” and the rewards they do get you need to be gold+ for the good stuff and that’s once every season.

What we need is a better leader board system (possibly one with division like LoL could work) and a reward for being in the top % of player and not just for playing the game for a while.

This is a competitive game mode and it should be its main focus, adding other long term progression just spreads out the focus.

A “feeling of improvement” cannot be passively displayed as an achievement. Without a title, or a skin, the feeling itself is meaningless since the whole idea is to have the progression easily visible to other people. Otherwise for me, there’s no point in having the feeling.

How does having other long term goals harm anyone? You say it spreads out the focus. Does it matter? Some people like me will aim for them. Those who don’t like it won’t aim for them.

So far, I see zero downside to having both types of rewards no?

If you think that a finisher and a few skins that some people might not have was ever meaningful progression, then I’m sorry but you need to reevaluate what that word means to you.

Skins are finishers are meaningful to me. It may not be meaningful to you – which is cool since no one will force you to chase then.

Different things motivate different people right?

I get what you are saying bhag, but if you are just arbitrarily watching that purple bar go up, then why not make alts and play PvE and watch the arbitrary yellow bar go up?

I know you play for fun, but if it’s not fun anymore, then take a break yo! Play WvW for fun til they do something with PvP to add in another false sense of progression. Ranks in PvP are really only the XP of PvP. Until they fix the way players are grouped in solo, the leaderboards don’t mean a thing.

I know you said you think you’d be at a disadvantage in WvW, but getting your level up on sounds like the thing you like and WvW has that in spades.

The sad thing is I find PvP incredibly fun but like I mentioned, that’s not why I play an MMO. For me, fun is an awesome benefit and one that will make me choose one game over the other all other things being equal. But the primary motivation is character progression.

I really wish now that I had devoted time to WvW instead of PvP. I have four lvl 80 alts and since I like the adrenaline rush of PvP and I could also play alone, I found it to be much more satisfying than running around breaking doors. Had I known however, that Anet would strip PvP progression I would never have wasted my time. Just imagine what rank I could have reached by now

“Skill” is not the only type of long term goal you can have. Just like Achievement Points in PvE do not reflect “skill” in PvE, there’s no reason to have ranks reflect it either. Let them remain as an indicator of time spent and everyone is happy.

Why do PvE’ers get APs and we get nothing?

PvP is a competitive game mode, why wouldn’t the long term goal be to improve. Think of when people play sports, everyone who plays them goes for the short term goal of having fun, and if you want to, the long term goal of being a great player and the rewards that come with that.

If you want another long term, make your own one. Here is one for you, Do all the reward tracks and get all the skins u can get from each one, there’s a long term goal for you that isn’t just improving in skill.

As long as I can’t display those long term goals as a prestige value, they mean nothing. Who wants to have achievements that no one can see? So if I get all the skins, will I have a title to show off? Or a finisher? Or some unique skin to signify the achievement?

No one is saying take away skill based goals. We can have both! It’s not a zero sum game you know. One does not detract from the other.

How about dividing earned AP in PvE, PvP and WvW for a starter.
Same divide that has been done with monthly/daily and the rest, while still having the total number on the character screen but being able to see the game mode source of each.

Then add an only PvP and only WvW AP leaderboard.
Not sure how many AP there are in total and if it would be too easy in sPvP.

Yes, that would surely help. As long as there’s some number that can keep increasing and that we can work towards pushing up constantly and has visibility to others as well.
