Just logged in today after 6 months (not purchased HoT) to play a few games. Had to wait 4 mins in ranked (gave up waiting) and 6 minutes in unranked (finally got a game!).

Is that an indication of a lower PvP population, or was it a one off thing…? I remember consistent wait times of 2 mins before.

If you want to have a 100% correct answer, you will have to ask arenanet. I have some doubts you will get a useful answer. The impression which I have in the game and from the posts in the forum is that it becomes more and more difficult to find appropriate opponents/team-mates. Hence, the population decreased. In your specific case, you have to keep in mind that you (more or less) just started with the league. Most other players are outside your league position and cannot be matched with or against you.

Ok, that makes sense…

Its more like a requirement than a choice. Unlike gw1 you can’t be competitive in pvp without the xpac. The core specializations pale in comparison to the elite ones introduced in hots. So much that you are always forced to take elite specs.

Hmm….but with those elite specializations, how’s the build diversity? Like if I see a ranger, will I more or less know what they’re playing?

I’ve played GW2 since the beta, but left when HoT was released – I was essentially downgraded to F2P status. I’ve been thinking of getting back in the action, but have no idea if it’s worth it.

So here are some questions to the community who has been playing HoT since it came out:

1. How is build diversity? I liked to play Necros (wells, fear or bunker), Mesmers (phant, bunker, condis), and Engi (bunker, decap)

2. Are the new specializations effectively mandatory? Will I be forced to use them?

3. Is the meta leaning towards 1-shotting, or bunkering? Has the basic gameplay changed?

4. Will I have to relearn everything? Are all the older builds outdated now?

Again playing Ranked is more efficient since you’ll never end up in Courtyard to begin with.

The problem with ranked is a higher chance of pre-mades = higher chance of me hitting a brick wall and losing. Right now, there’s a kind of “gentleman’s agreement” that pre-mades don’t go ranked, so I prefer unranked.

You mean agreement that pre-mades don’t go unranked? I see pre-mades all the time in unranked, when I group with my guild we typically go unranked cause we like the variety of maps in unranked.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. I’m saying that it’s generally understood to be bad manners for premades to play unranked. Of course, no one can stop them if they choose to do so. It’s just that most people choose to be decent voluntarily instead of having it forced on them.

The PvP system enforces a 50% win ratio. So the “beating up noobs in PvP” doesn’t apply. You’re always gaining gold at a constant rate no matter how good you are (unless you’re at the very top).

“Play your way” implies that you’re not significantly worse off doing some content than others. If one game mode gives a lot more gold than the other, then there is no “play your way” because people will gravitate towards that which pays the most.

Also, you don’t get to decide why people PvP. You can’t say “PvP is not meant to be something you farm income”. Where is the citation for that? Did Anet say it? Who said farming must only happen in PvE? Where is your reference?

Anet didn’t say it verbally, they said through their actions when they implemented each system with a specific set of rewards…. Anet has been “saying” it for 3 years now, not my fault you don’t seem to get a clue….

You seem to be confusing what is, with what should be. You say “its not LOGICAL for a PvP game mode to offer rewards that are better than or even close the PvE”. Except that you haven’t demonstrated the logic. Where is it? Nowhere.

You say Anet’s current system is proof what what they want PvP to be. By that logic, there should never be any changes in any reward system. Ultimately things change. When GW2 first launched, we got no in-game gold from PvP at all. That changed. Which means Anet admitted that you could get gold from PvP.

We are trying to take that one step further. We want things to change. Merely pointing out the current state of affairs is not a logical reason for keeping them the same. Neither is it a logical way to deduce Anet’s intentions from the current system simply because their implementation might not have been perfect. That is why there are patches. That is why there are balance changes.

You say “There is no logical reason for PvP income to be on par with PvE”. On the contrary, there is no logical reason for them to NOT be on par. They are both the same game. They are both different modes. The default assumption is that they will be equally rewarding.

As for killing players in PvE maps, asking for that feature is a perfectly logical path. In fact, there have already been several threads asking for just this. Games change, games evolve, and often the developers realize that the current system is lacking in some way and new things need to be added.

We are simply arguing for equal gold rewards for PvE and PvP. Your arguments against it so far have not been logical.

Moral of the story is I’ll vote for what I feel like playing, which is the whole reason a map voting system exists. If someone wants to intentionally feed like a child because they didn’t get their way, that’s their business.

Oh that’s fine then. Different goals. I vote for what I think will give me the best chances you win. I play to win, you play for fun. No judgments.

If you played to win you wouldn’t immediately give up because the wrong map won the spin. Intentionally losing is not a winning strategy.

A better solution would be to just play Ranked where the map you won’t play isn’t even an option.

Just for the record, people used to solo in Team q only because Team q had higher rewards and better maps. I know I did.

If Anet implements solo Q, it had better have the same rewards for team and solo. Otherwise, I will obviously go where the rewards are higher. Why should teams get higher rewards than soloers?

A few things here, if you werent here you wouldnt of seen the times for solo que. Many of us had 15+ min solo que times. Which made it so there was no reason for solo que IN GW2.

I asked people before and they said solo queue actually have short queue. It is only group queue people having problem.

I’m kind of confused why everyone is saying different things.

And if queue time is a problem, I’m not sure how we are going to have league system which divide people even more. Unless of course you can have people in different league in the same match. For example have a mix of league 4 and league 5 people in the same match.

I used to have 3-4 mins solo q time.

People here are getting confused between “Taunt” and “Ranger”. Wanting taunt to work correctly is an entirely different issue from buffing/nerfing ranger. If taunt is bugged, then it’s bugged. The fact that only rangers use taunt right now is irrelevant.

Hey again guys, just had a chat with some of the other admins. The rule we have set in our GW2 events is mainly to circumvent EU participation in NA and vice versa, not disallow SA/Brazilian players from participating. Brazilian and other South American players should not have issues participating in future events from this point forward as “NA players” via our rules.

The problem that occurred last weekend should no longer occur in the future so long as teams have 3/5 representatives from NA/SA when they initially sign up. Apologies on my part for the problems that may have been caused by this confusion last weekend, and we hope to see you guys participating this Sunday.

If a person sitting in the EU tries to play an NA tournament, won’t they face unacceptable amounts of lag at a competitive level? Isn’t that enough of a demotivator for them trying to participate?

If the lag is not a problem, I find it weird that Anet wants to prevent players from EU playing in NA tournaments. I mean – in this context, real world locations signify nothing. Is there some kind of patriotism, or loyalty or something at work here? Are we really looking at artificial things like “American” and whatnot?

Of course people who don’t have full visibility to the back end of PvP will ask for solo q.

Asking “Would you rather queue up solo only against other solo queue people or mostly against other solo queue people” is a no brainer…

But there’s a couple missing pieces to this assumption:

1) Players often don’t accurately recognize “premades” and often assume that the other team has people who queued together while their team is all randoms. The psychological effect of negativity bias plays into this too where people are more likely to remember being paired against a strong premade than the times when they had a strong premade on their team.

2) We don’t know exactly how many people are queueing for PvP at one time.

3) We don’t know the full mechanics of the MMR system.

Because of 2 and 3, we don’t know exactly how good the queue times and matches would be in a solo Q world.

And finally, maybe a lot of people here are new or simply have forgotten, but there were a lot of problems with the reward balancing of solo Q and team Q. Before they were merged, people would often just queue for Team Q even while solo because the rewards were better.

The rewards problem is easily solved – just have the same rewards for solo and team q – like it should have been in the first place.

Strange – I never noticed that my target changes on taunt. Probably because I have the “Promote Target” option ticked in my UI? Because I’m pretty sure my target remains exactly the same. It only changes when the ranger stealths…

Incidentally as a necro, I’ve come to realize that being taunted means I’m about to be loaded up with conditions…which I allow happily. Then boom – plague signet baby!

Almost insta win at that point.

I used to love GW1 PvE content. GW2 PvE open world content is terrible with just zergs all around.

Moreover, GW1 PvE had heroes. Towards the end, I could just go out with 7 heroes of my own and play almost all PvE content solo. That freed me from the headache of finding a party.

If anyone feels that there’s too much skill spamming and zerging, does anyone remember the skill “Panic” from the GW1 mesmer? We never used it in RA PvP, but I think the nature of GW2 PvP would fit it nicely.

In case someone doesn’t know what “Panic” does, here’s the skill fact:

When a foe hexed with Panic successfully uses a skill, all other nearby foes are interrupted.

We can probably exempt AAs though…!

Mesmer: Outside of the mantra of distraction mirror blade mind wrack build you generally were outplayed through kiting.

You forgot one of the most hated builds for Mesmer and probably the whole game as well.

You mean the condi PU build that you can beat with 0 cleanses by dodging the only 2 threatening attacks?

I am way more fearful of all burst builds than PU condi Mesmer.

No1 can beat it with 0 cleanses, please.
The Condi PU mesmers you fought must’ve been AFK.

Dodge Confusing images and it’s so well telegraphed you have to be afk to not dodge it.

Dodge shatters, mainly Cry of Frustration as those are what really stack the torment and confusion.

Don’t be too aggressive and trigger Illusionary Counter which is easy to see on anyone who isn’t an Asura. I will admit though it’s hard to see on Asura and I hate people who use smallest Asura to mask animations whatever class.

Anything else they can throw at you would be less than any power build auto attack by a considerable margin. You can also kite shatters by jumping onto things. Just don’t sit in the middle of a few illusions and you’ll be fine. Throw down the counter burst after they use illusionary counter.

If you avoid the 3 things above (note: only 2 you need to dodge) your heal will out heal anything they do.

It doesn’t matter because they can still stealth and run away. And that’s pretty rage inducing – hence the title of the thread.

Keep in mind that it only lasts for 20 minutes. So you need to activate it just before entering a match. No point popping it while still in HotM and having it run out before the match ends…

It’s pretty lame if you ask me. It should last for at least 4 matches.

Warrior, Engie and Necromancer

This is off-topic but I was browsing through subforums and found the necromancer’s to be very supportive and one of the least toxic. Kinda ironic for a class that’s supposed to be dark and evil. I have lots of respect for necros because we’ve been in a drought (lack of OPness) for far too long.

I think recently the build defining quality of warriors was immunity – zerk stance, double endure pain, rampage (as good as immune and soft CC reduced by 33%). Not to mention constant stun lock. So, warriors have gotten quite a bit of “unfair feeling” recently.

Engis…again….the things that might kitten people off is constant CC, double Elixir S, stealth, and moa.

As far as necros go, yeah completely agree. Really very little to rage about. This doesn’t mean they have bad damage or defense – far from it. It’s just that their mechanics don’t seem to inspire any rage.

Was going through the mesmer forum – there’s a lively debate on PU (of course). It’s often said that people rage whenever they lose, but this isn’t always true.

So here are my least raged on professions – when if I lose, I simply go “Ok yeah, they outplayed me” or “They direct countered my build”.

1. Necros (hands down least raged on I think). Possible exceptions: Lich, MM
2. Guardian (pretty honest play). Possible exception: Insta burn bombs these days

What about you? Which professions do you not feel bad about losing to?

As for solo queue. No it shouldn’t come back. It would split the community too much. Pretty obvious really.

It’s already understood that pre-mades in unranked is very bad manners. All we’re asking is for the rule to be made official. Well behaved pre-mades do not go to unranked. Only inconsiderate pre-mades intent on exploitation queue up in ranked.

Unfortunately despite the bad manners, you can’t force people to be nice. There will inevitably be inconsiderate pre-mades who keep queuing in unranked. A solo q will simply put a stop to such bad behavior.

How to counter Stealth Mesmers?

It’kitten and miss. Dodging their GS #2 is very important, but it’s on such a short CD that you might not be able to. Plus they may do it in stealth close up so you don’t see it coming.

What I’ve found is that you need to be aggressive instead of passive. Even if you’re on low health, go after them with your dagger as soon as you see them. Pop up locust swarm, and keep Dagger #1’ing. This will cripple them and make it tough for them to kite you. It will also force them to blow their defensive CDs including distortion which also take clone pressure off you.

Dagger #2 tracks through stealth as well so activate it after a couple of Dagger #1 rotations when you know they’re about to stealth. It prevents them from having breathing space.

Next, make sure you take curses and get Enfeebling shroud. Spamming weakness on a mesmer is critical since it means they can’t get crits off you and also reduces their dodges, allowing you to stay on them more often.

And if possible, use DS #2 and DS #3 to stay on them. When they stealth, use DS #4 and #5.

Notice the key theme throughout – do not give them breathing space. If you let up the pressure, they will burst you down. If you let them dictate the flow of combat, you will die.

I know this is easier said than done, but you have no choice. If they’re stealthed and you have nothing else to do, just run around where you think they may be spamming Dagger #1 and hope you get lucky with the chain.

If you have to go staff, try and land your marks on them…not really doing much damage as such, but just forcing them to react to you instead of you reacting to them. Fearing them and chilling them makes them blow CDs and dodges, allowing you to once again stick close.

Mesmers are terrified of people getting close to them. It makes them panic – I know because I’ve mained a mesmer. When you stick to them, they blow defensive CDs. It’s essential that you don’t give them breathing space.

If all this sounds a bit unfair, it’s because it is. Because stealth is ridiculously OP in PvP and you have to work super hard to counter it. Made worse by the fact that necros have no blocks, no evade skills, no invulns, and not much protection. But these are the cards we’re dealt with.

Note that you have little hope of actually killing a stealth mesmer if they decide to run away. But even if you die, you can last a ridiculously long time . Don’t make it easy for them – go on the offensive – even if it seems suicidal.

At least in conquest PvP when you fight them on point, you’re pretty much guaranteed a cap. If you can do that and last a long time, you’ve at least won the tactical advantage. And if you play your cards right or get lucky, you might even down one.

My experience has been the opposite – I’ve been winning a lot of matches to the point that I’m scared for the coming eventual losing streak

I wouldn’t mind if I lost to great soloers. My problem is that Anet will now place me with teams, making me lose unfairly rather than fairly.

Nah, not really. They either evade most of the hits, or step out for its duration…

This is not to deny the psychological AoE denial of wells in general, but it’s not particularly useful for killing eles.

I would even settle for ring of fire not applying burns when you’re not actually standing on it. The other day, I swear I was outside it – on the edge but not touching – and I kept getting burn stacks on me.

It should apply only when there is actual overlap between the ring and my toon’s feet visually.

I read the post about “raids” coming to GW2. The only MMOs I’ve ever played are Guild Wars 1/2 and Diablo, so I don’t exactly see how raids are different from dungeons.

From the description, they look like 10-man dungeons. But it must mean something else right?

There’s not a single pvp’er I know in this world that actually cares about these points.
I also think that rewarding players for every fart is not a good habit. Players are starting to look like experimental monkeys, getting a treat for every trick they pull off.

These points count towards the reward track. PvP’ing for 3 years since beta and I wouldn’t play if there were no rank points, or some kind of reward.

I play MMOs because it satisfies my psychological reward systems. I am a willing experimental monkey, and I need my treats. Otherwise I can’t justify the time spent gaming. If I didn’t want rewards, I would play a traditional game like Mario Bros or something.

MMOs are all about the carrots and the chasing of said carrots.

To be honest, I throw most of the crap away, like piles of sand or PvE keys. And I hate openening endless amount of chests. I salvage everything I can salvage, and the only usefull things im getting are transmutation stones.

Untill I find a precursor, I can confirm that the only reason why I play pvp is, because its fun.

Great. As long as you realize you’re only speaking for yourself and not for the entire PvP community.

Wow, that is annoying. Not sure if hacking since it’s true that hes’ immune to condis above 90% health. What I find more interesting is 3k of direct damage hardly even chipping away at his health.

But then if he’s using full nomad gear, it can definitely be possible. Notice that you were barely receiving any damage as well…

I agree that the minimap should clearly display every known location of allies and enemies, however I disagree that precision is not important.

When I opened this thread I expected to read something like “make the icons have a way of detecting overlap and automatically spread apart with tails on the icon marking their exact location, similar to a pin in Google Maps”. Maybe this would be a good way to have the information you desire without losing out on knowing the precise location of the icons/players.

Another suitable option would be to keep the minimap as is and simply add a function to mouse over which would display the names of all players in the vicinity, assuming their location is known, so that even if the icons are messy and unclear, you can see who is where. The text for each player could be coloured to match their team for clarity (particularly when solo queuing).

The pin idea is interesting. Should be great if we can implement it in a way that doesn’t clutter the interface too much.

I’m not sure about the mouseover idea though – often we need to see stuff “at a glance”. Hovering and displaying player names would I think take too much time…That’s just a personal preference though.

I often find it impossible to tell exactly how many of each team is at a certain point. Sometimes all I see is blue, when there are actually a couple of reds in there as well. This isn’t helped by the sometimes huge number of mesmer clones.

There are a lot of bugs in the game and often times there are enough that we can’t get to all of them as fast as we would like. Duelist Discipline not applying to Pistol 4 didn’t get into my queue until after the cutoff date for changes to the 8/25 build. I’ve got it fixed for a future release though.

At least it’s confirmed that it’s a bug and not merely a wrong tooltip text!

If my understanding is correct, we get a dye kit with the 3rd bday gift right? That means it’s a random chance. Out of 25 dye colors, only 6 are rare.

This means you will most likely just get a common blue. Pretty bad if you ask me – 3 years and I get a blue dye for my efforts. Marvelous!

Basically, our trait right now is working as intended, cause Magic Bullet procs 33% bleeds.
