If previous game updates are anything to go by, Anet usually updates on Mondays around 11pm or midnight PST. So, you will need to do the maths for your time zone …
I live in Europe, so the updates are not available for me until I get home from work on Tuesdays …
Level 80 now, and mainly PvE, so Longbow/Greatsword for me.
I carry around everything else I can use. When I start doing dungeons, I’ll probably be swapping the other weapons around like crazy …
@tomceulemans
I just went though this over the weekend! lol!
My ranger (LB/GS) hit lvl 80 on Friday evening…
I spent most of Saturday & Sunday agonising over what armour to buy ….
I had been using all beserker kit since lvl 61 (blues), then up-graded to berserker (again blues) at lvl 72. I used accessories to fill the lack of toughness and vitality …
When I hit lvl 80, I looked at all the exotics and rares available for lvls 78-80 again and again. Unfortunately the prices don’t change the longer you stare at them …
For something different, I went to check the karma armour vendor in WvW. I had enough karma for a full set of lvl 80 ‘greens’, These have some of the protection stats you might be interested in, but have lower base defense stats.
Last evening, I finally made a decision and bought a full set of Beserker exotics. Cost me 12 gold. Between saving while leveling and selling some gems, I managed to scrape up 21 gold.
The beserker kit looks nice as well, so need to transmute, however all my slots are empty. Filling these with exotic runes (6 activations) will cost another 12 gold, so this will need to wait for a while.
I also craft leatherworking, currently lvl 290. I plan to get to lvl 400 so I can craft the Berserker exotics and then sell them on the TP. Hopefully this will return the gold investment I made in this kit ..
I also up-graded my longbow and greatsword to exotic as well …
Not sure if helps you, but at least you know you are not the only one going through this …

There is a very good guide that explains this.
Here is the link:
http://dulfy.net/2012/10/03/gw2-endgame-gearing-guide/
I would suggest a Ranger as well, very versatile class. However, a lot depends on your preferred play style, and if you play with a group of friends or solo.
Try to stick with a class until at least level 20 to determine if it is going to work for you.
@DirtyDeeds
Well said, mate!
@Ryuujin
Providing advice and constructive help to a player to improve their skills to benefit the group is one thing.
Bullying someone into playing the way you think they should play is entirely different…
It’s all about the attitude ….
Made the shortlist!
Cheers for this LoneWolfie
I would approach your XP goal setting in this way:
The game is geared towards exploration, you earn XP for finding PoI’s, way-points, vistas, etc. and the dynamic events Era mentioned above. Plus you earn additional XP for every100% map completion. Also you have a Personal Story that provides large XP boosts as you work through the ‘chapters’.
Set a goal of map completions over a certain time period, i.e. 1 map per day or 1 map every 2 days, along with following your personal story. You will be leveling up so fast, your head will spin …
PS. Don’t forget crafting. It is not a major XP boost on it’s own, but does add up …

Thanks Ebs!
I don’t play PvP, and no plans to do so.
Explains why the cupboard was bare …
cheers!
.. it was completely empty! Not a stitch!!
All 3 lockers were the same…
Can anyone please explain why ??
Cheers!
The GW2 devs have made this game is such a way as to avoid the 3 main class types: tank, healer, damage dealer. Each profession has some aspect of those 3 elements, with some slightly more skewed one way or the other.
The next thing is how are you going to play the game, mainly PvE, or PvP, or WvW, or a combo of all 3 or 2? Also, are going to play solo or with a group of friends?
After this, it is a matter of what play style is enjoyable for you. Try a few professions until lvl 20 at least. This won’t take you long and will help determine what you like. The game is not a race to lvl 80 ..
The most important thing is to have fun!
Ah, my bad … Sorry, should have read more closely …
From the website linked by mercury:
“Be prepared for an epic adventure in four acts starting October 22 and running until October 31.”
So we know the exact timeframe.
Well, that is a shame …
1 Nov (Thurs) is a bank holiday here where I live and I am taking the the Friday off work as well. Would have been nice to play the event during the time off …
This is the best world map I have found so far:
http://www.guildhead.com/map#z:5;c:-1.142578125,9.7064208984375
You can zoom out or in enough to see where most of the map connection paths are located.
However, some are under mountains, water, and I found one inside a building …
PS. You can toggle on/off the various map elements …
Someone posted on one of the threads earlier that you can open your “Hero” tab and go to the Mists (pvp area). From there on the east side is the PvP Lockers. From the lockers, you preview every armor / weapon set in the game on any of toons you take there.
Thanks for posting this!!
I pass though the Mists area all the time (free travel to LA …), but don’t do PvP so never knew where the PvP Lockers are located …
I’m lvl 77 and been having a tough time finding human female medium armour I like…
@Wasabee
Thanks for this tip! I am lvl 77 and will start checking out lvl 78 exotics on the TP.
@mercury
Excellent explanation!
Cheers for that!!
Mail the best way, but there are some conditions.
I tried to mail an armour piece to a player on a different server and guild, and the system would not let me. However I could send consumable items to this player. The armour item might have been soulbound, so that could have been the problem…
I have sent armour, weapons, and dyes to players both in and out of group, on the same server and map using mail with no problems.
Re Underwater skills …
Not all work underwater.
I play a ranger and my Healing Spring and traps are blanked out from the selection while underwater.

The only place you can ‘charm’ a carrion devourer is in the Iron Marches.
There is no level restriction for entering IM, but keep in mind the area is rated for levels 50–60. They are found is in a slightly forested plain-type area in the central-south part of the map, so you do need to travel some distance to get one. If you are at a lower level, stay on the roads, evade any encounters, and you might get to one and WP out before something kills you.
As for it being the best ranged pet, it depends on your preferences. The good thing about devourers is that they have a reasonably good AI evade that helps to keep them alive,
Spiders are good ranged pets, but tend to die more often.

… you’ll actually need skillpoints to purcahse stuff from Miyani (NPC) near the Mystic Forge in Lion’s Arch. so maybe that’s something you want to keep in mind as well.
Argh! I didn’t know this!!
I just finished ‘buying’ all my skills, (many I didn’t want or need …) cos I didn’t know what else to do with the points ….
@OP
Try this: 30/30/0/0/10
Marks: 4, 10, 11
Skirmish: 2, 10, 11
BM: 1
Troll Ungent or Healing Spring; Quicking Zepher; Signet of Stone (6 seconds of invulnerability) and/or Signet of the Wild (Stability + Damage buff), and/or Signet of Renewal (Condition removal and stun breaker); Rampage as One
Reason:
I find increased vitality works better than toughness, and the pet skills cooldown buff in BM is useful.
If you going to use signets (and you should…) then you need Signet Mastery and Signet of the Beastmaster in Marksmanship.
For WvW you can swap Eagle Eye for Piercing Arrows if you want.
If you are going to use traps in WvW, then you need Trap Potency (Skirmish XI), otherwise run with 2 signet utilities and your pet damage buff.
I have been on Gunnar’s Hold since game launch mainly playing solo PvE.
To answer some your questions, GH seems to be English (have not seen other languages used) and I have not done WvW yet, so don’t know about the queues.
The current population is listed as ‘high’, but the number of players around will depend on the times you play and maps zones..
Players seem to be friendly, and work together. I have recently met a few for group exploration, and we might start doing some dungeons soon.
You can check out this thread for more info:

I play a ranger, and mainly solo, so discovered combo fields very early on when first using trap skills. When traps were triggered, I could use the field effect to add additional condition damage on my arrows or melee weapons.
Also, rangers can have a torch equipped with a skill that lays down a fire field for this purpose.
Taking advantage of other professions AoE fields in group attacks is very useful when dealing with champion bosses and the like.
I started out in Queensdale following my personal story for awhile. When I was lvl 20-something, I decided to start collecting all my ranger pets. The took me on a very long, extended tour through all the other race cities and lower level maps.
I did it in a similar way as others have described, starting with the lowest level maps first, and gradually moving on to higher level maps.
Fields of Ruin is an odd map. Unless you use the gate in Divinity’s Reach, you need to travel through the higher level Blazeridge Steppes to get there..
I play on Gunnar’s Hold (EU), and apart from a few issues just after game launch, I have had no performance problems.
No one knows when Anet will end the free server transfers …
As long as your guild has a enough Oceanic/Asian players for you to play with during times you want to play, I do not see any problems for you.
I would think a north American server would be best for you due to your time zone. However, if that is not important for you, then go with an EU server.
There are plenty of EU English servers to choose from.
I play on Gunnar’s Hold and all the chat I have seen is in English, and it seems to be a friendly place to play.
Here’s a couple:
Q: What do you call a SB Ranger?
A: An auto-attacking one-trick pony.
Q: What do you call a whinging SB Ranger?
A: A pain in the kitten who needs to L2P a ranger …
Q: What do you tell an ex-SB Ranger?
A: Mind the door on the way out …
Q: How can you tell a happy Ranger?
A: They didn’t fall for the ‘only SB rulz DPS’ crap and learned tactics, weapon versatility, and how to play the profession.
Also, not all loot drops are scaled to the area. There are some drops that can have much higher level loot.
I was in Gendarran Fields (lvl 26-32) last evening at level 70, and got a few level 50-60 items.
@Indoles
Good advice!
@Chrizasura
I would also suggest replacing Heal as One with Healing Spring, but this is more of a play style thing ….
This ^
Stopped using SB’s at lvl 20-something. Tried to like them, but seemed a one-trick weapon…
I am LB/GS all day!
I got the Falconer’s set for my Ranger because it looks awesome on her.
I think it comes down to your aesthetic taste and how much you are willing to pay.
I had to laugh when I read this!
I am happy for you that you enjoy it cos my female ranger wouldn’t wear this if was free.
The up-side for me is that I do not need to fret over having enough gold or karma to get the stuff …
As a solo PvE LB/GS ranger, I will happily stay with the profession!
Problem with the Murellow is that the AoE skill casting time is long.
Spiders AoE poison is quicker, but they are more squishy.
Personally, I prefer ranged pets like devourers. They also have a good evade AI so can survive through some long battles. Carrion devourer is my favourite.
In-game mail system will not allow me to attach items to send to another player.
My first toon was a Thief, fun class, very tactical, but at level 20 realised it was going to be too squishy for mainly solo PvE. I think the class works better when playing with a group.
I’m playing a ranger now (level 62), and really liking it. Lots of options for weapons, pets, etc. for different play styles.
@Era
I had a few DE’s that were announced but would not start. These were escort missions, and seems they require a minimum number of players to get under way. Hung around a bit, looking foolish, then left to do something else
Last evening, I had to pass though Plains of Ashford to get to the Marches. There were DE’s popping up all over. Seemed to me there were more than when I first explored it.
As a side note, I helped out with these, but mainly in support. Didn’t want to take away the EXP from the starting players. Made sure they ‘tagged’ the mobs first, then would add in AoE condition, set Healing Spring and help mop-up. Just doing this was enough to get the ‘gold’ finish. Also did a lot of ressing, both NPC’s and players ..
I craft (leatherwork/weaponsmith) both are at 130 – 140 levels, so that helped with some XP. I also collect everything I see in the mini-map when walking through an area. Good source of income and XP!
I have not done a dungeon yet. Wanted to get to a decent level before attempting one. Also, I mainly solo, and thought dungeons were accessible only with a group.
Thanks mercury, I will give this a try !
Cheers!
For me, the human female medium armour I have seen so far (level 61) is the ugliest I’ve seen in a game for a very long time… I do not like the ‘coats’ thing, and the level 60 cultural armour is even worse!!
I have 45 transmute stones and nothing I want to transmute …
Quicksand ???
Never knew this before cos I have avoided all the spirit skills so far …
I must be slow then…
Been playing since release and only level 61, but I have explored 49% of the world map. The time it takes depends on your RL (I also work…) and your play style.
I play a Ranger and around level 25 or so decided I wanted to collect all the pets. This took me on a massive exploration route through all the various cites and level 1-15 and 16-25 maps for all the race areas.
When I enter a new map, I will stay in it until 100% completed. This takes time, and if you are in lower-level maps, the EXP for mobs and DE’s is not that high. At the end of this (last weekend) I was level 57 with 35 pets.
At this point I decided to go back to my personal story, and was way over-leveled. I have been working on the PS all this week, mainly in Bloodtide, but I get easily distracted by DE’s and exploration. Also, I took a detour into the Iron Marches last evening to get another pet …
So, I am slower at leveling, but have a lot of world exploration done, and many pets to choose from …
I ask this cos I want to send an armour piece to some one who is on a different server and guild.
Can this be done though the in-game email?
There are around 40 pets available to Rangers, most can be found in the cities and lower-level (1-25) map areas for all the various races. There are 4 or 5 in some 25-50 level areas, but concentrate on the easier ones first.
This is the first MMO I enjoy playing, so noob to all this.
I joined Gunnar’s Hold (EU) server at launch after reading an article on the PC Gamer website. This is where they were setting up their guild, so figured I would give both the server and the guild a try.
At launch it had a medium population, but now I see it is at ‘high’. I’m mainly a casual PvE solo player (currently at lvl 61) and so far it seems fine, but I don’t have any other reference for comparison. People seem friendly enough and seem to help each other out in-game. I haven’t been hit by any ‘trains’…
Last evening I wanted to go to the Iron Marches (wanted to get my Carrion Devourer pet) and had to pass through Plains of Ashford (I don’t like paying for WP’s unless necessary…). I took a fairly direct route from the Black Citadel to the Marches gate passage cos I had already explored all of Plains of Ashford.
I had read through this thread yesterday, although I am only level 60, I tried to follow the advice and etiquette given here.
I took my time, and helped out where necessary. I made sure the other players had ‘tagged’ mobs before attacking. I participated in all the DE’s that happened around me, but played more of a support role, mainly using AoE (Barrage) and Hunter Shot to place conditions the other players could take advantage of, and Healing Spring. Did a lot ressing, both NPC’s and a few players.
Took me a bit longer to make my way to the Marches doing all this, but was actually quite fun!
So, just wanted to say all your contributions here have not been in vane!
hmmmm, I’m not sure if I agree with you, I have a human engineer and am really happy with the (crafted) noble armor. Have been using it since level 35 and transmutating it all the time I find better stats.
http://imageshack.us/a/img197/6254/queen1.jpg
(head and shoulders are hidden and dye’s are midnight ice and Ivory)
Wow! Great job with the dyes!!
I use Abyss, Midnight Fire and Midnight Gold on mine, however, just not a fan of the ‘coats’. I almost prefer the very early shorter vest-type kit than the coats.
Whispers here as well …
Fits more into my usual sneaky-type RPG play style.
