Why do people stop playing GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

cesmode.4257

People stop playing because the game isnt what was promised. Its a grind, its a gear grind for ascended gear if you want BiS gear, and you cannot play the way you want.

With that said, it is the most gorgeous game to date, the most beautiful environment, and has the most potential.

The daily system was fine before, when it did not reward laurels. ‘nuff said. If they remove laurels, people wouldn’t even bother worrying and just play the way they want. Which is how the game is supposed to. The game was never meant to keep your attention every single day, and make you log in every single day. Its a non-sub model, and arenanet isnt required to produce a game like that. So if you took a few days off, no biggie. But when yo come back you can play how you want to.

Rewarding you for every day content compels MOST people to seek out the required content and complete it. Human nature.

Summation of this thread: The daily system is good, the Laurel system is bad.

Vayne, youre points contradict everything this game is supposed to stand for. Play as you want. IF all he wants to do is dungeons, let him do dungeons. But with the daily system, that will kitten him. He probably wont get the daily done.

Your point about “if you play less you get rewarded less” is also contradictory of the core of the game. What happened to “take a break if you want, play when you can..dont worry you wont be behind”. Well if you take a weekend long vacation, you are two or three days behind in laurels.

Laurels for ascended gear was a bad idea.

This is the message I’m trying to get across.

I’m not so much against the dailies, because admittedly, they’re relatively easy and quick to get.

The problem is that the thing most people want with their Laurels is exclusive to Laurels, which is a bad design.

If you wanted max gear or certain things in GW1 you needed money and materials. You could get those any way you wanted: farm the materials, or farm the money for the materials. And in GW1, farming money wasn’t limited to 1 dungeon because all other places in the world were absolutely terrible. Although, admittedly, the amount of money you made in DoA in a good DoASC guild made everything in the game outside of top-tier PvP look like trash for cash, but at least DoA had a good Risk vs Reward ratio, so not many people complained.

What really began to irk me about the daily system was the fact that if I wanted to buy the ascended accessory slot, it would be something like 40 or so laurels(OK no problem), but then 50 ectos. What!? Im saving those ectos for my legendary. But I also want best in slot gear for fractals. Oh so now I have to join a guild if I want both?

I then remember coming here to vent, and saw a post by Isiah Cartwright I believe..he said they wanted to “encourage” us to join guilds and participate in guild missions because you can get the items via commendations(without ectos). Thats why the ecto pricetag was placed on the laurel acquisition option…to encourage us to run guild missions instead.

So I said, woah woah…wait a second. What happened to play as I want? This whole time I was not compelled to be part of any meaningful guild, just a small group of friends. Now youre telling me that if I dont want to empty my bank of ectos, I need to join a guild to obtain that BiS slot? What a crock.

The way I wanted to play this game was the following(in order)
-Get as many toons to 80 as I could stomach(I got 5)
-Pick two or three as mains. (Picked three)
-Gear up those mains with best in slot.
“Oh no, ascended?! Sigh, OK lets try gearing up these three toons”
-After trying to gear them up as much as possible, then just enjoy the game and slowly go after that legendary. By enjoy, I mean maybe run a dungeon? Maybe some WvW? Maybe some farming? But..
-Now I have to make sure I get the daily done for laurels…that alters my gameplay slightly.

So in multiple spots, I am taken away from what I WANT to do, and encouraged into a new direction.

No amount of optimism from this thread or anyone else will change that.

Of course dailys are forced. When the reward gives you the ability to purchase power (ascended) yes, you make sure you get them done. I am logging in this early in the morning to get mine done.

Sure, there are those in this very thread that will say “Just play the game, youll get them done. Dont even think about it”. But thats not necessarily true. If all you wanted to do was farm, you probably wont get them done. If all you wanted to do was dungeon run, you probably wont get them done. You might, but unlikely.

Yes, they are forced. While the dailys are easy enough to complete and are incorporated into every day game play, they are still forced because of the reward given.

Laurels for ascended gear was a bad idea.

Depends what you want out of the game and what your playstyle is.

The game is veering toward more grind and more RNG, if you are looking to get skins, mats, precursors, etc.

If you are interesting in just playing, they keep pumping events into the game. Some are more shallow than others. Verdict is still out on this current one…Im just not too impressed after seeing things like Wintersday.

So, I just noticed…theres a thread at the top of the list here…something about Condition Duration vs Condition Damage. I said to myself: “Self, it is very refreshing to actually see a thread talking about GW2, game mechanics, etc instead of complaining about RNG, lack of content, boredem, legendaries, TP prices, etc.”

While I am the absolute first to complain about these things, and I think voicing our opinion over and over is the only way to make our points heard, it is still definately refreshing to see complete constructive threads on these forums. Its almost unheard of to see this type of thread pop up in General Discussion.

So lets talk! GW2 constructive discussions!

Welllll, 8 hours a day since launch… Assuming thats no exaggeration, thats excessive my friend. For any game. Do not fault GW2 for it.

I agree, the grind in this game that is meant not to be grindy, can and will burn you out. No matter what activity you are doing. Im feeling the same way right now. Barely scraping up the will to log in for 30 minutes for my daily. Yeah, I have the urge and need to force my self to do my daily for that laurel, so I keep up with the currency…so I dont fall behind. Laurels were a terrible addition to the game for this reason.

Anyways, once I lose the will to play at all, I’ll be in Neverwinter full swing. Level 60 and running actually VERY VERY difficult dungeons in that game. Having a blast.

If GW2 is burning you out, take a break. No harm, no shame. The way the game is designed is that when you come back, you wont be behind. However, …is that true?

Please inform us:
How much gold you have?
How do/did you earn such gold?
How long did it take you?

Because without playing for 10 hours a day, I can make maybe…2-3 gold per day playing two or 3 hours a night after work. That actually playing the game instead of COF farming….and selling nearly everything I get.

If they told people the odds a lot less people would buy them and they would make less money.

This may be. But my loyalty and view of a company will compel me to spend in other areas.

The way we are treated as paying customers go much further than most realize. Even if in the short term it costs them some coin…in the long term, if you’ve done right by me, I’ll be spending money. Lots of it.

I kind of wanted to quote Bruce Wayne here, but saw no clever opportunity: “You don’t understand. One fundraiser with my pals, you’ll never need another cent.”

And the truth is that is Arena Net’s interest to keep their players. All game companies want as many players as possible, because that means more money. Is not enough for a company that the players buy your game and after 10 months leave for good. The black lion trading company needs people to buy these items…but who will buy them if there were only small changes ? Minis, hats, dyes….you guys make many of those every week but nothing really important and major for the game. That’s profit on short-run but on the long run(meaning over a year from now) will be a big loss. Just wanting to say how the things are…bring more personal story, events on all maps or new ones, new max lvl and bring an expansion….just a few good things that could happen, for the happiness of everybody.

Economics 101: The #1 priority for any company worth their spit is stockholders. Regardless of the method of how you do it, keep them happy. Thats it. Thats if you are a public company.

Dont even know if Arenanet is.

I like the way they made this event, with the Southsun crates it was pretty difficult to get them. I got 15 the entire time and got a ticket on my 12th. With these, they drop like candy, meaning you don’t have to buy them with real money or in-game money. You can get ~100 coffers PER hour on a empty-ish map.

Sure they should have had a 5-10% chance, but it’s the nature of the game. Just have the foresight to realize its a month long event and the drop rates of the coffers won’t go down. People need candy for the wings and achievements, how do you get those? Kill holo creatures and coffers.

you see the rich coffer on the TP says that there’s a “rare” chance to get a voucher. If one decides not to farm the regular coffers, but to buy these I think that they have the right to know for what kind of chance are they paying.

Otherwise, its a gamble correct? And we have pointed that out, in a different thread, that gambling does not exist in this game…or at least some seems to think it doesnt. If it doesn’t exist, then we should know what to expect.

Begrudgingly, I agree with Vayne as well. Never thought Id see the day, but the man has a point. If the current trend of gear “progression”, even if it is cosmetic, is to be driven by RNG, lets see what is really meant by rare. A chance at a precursor…is that 1 in 10,000? A chance at a skin. Is that 1 in 5000? Last night alone, in 1 hour of play, I opened around 50 coffers. Nothing but candy and some fireworks. Wasted time, and if I had spent $$ to purchase with gems, it would have been wasted money as well.

I actually have a suggestion…[a lot of text]

Hey, not a bad idea at all! Maybe you can have the re-level-setting come with a harder difficulty aswell. Like you can take less damage, skills takes longer to recharge etc?

Sure, definately possibly throw in some…buff or debuff.

However, in order for this to be at all desirable, they still need to fix the downscaling. I can blow a part a lvl 7 reef drake in three hits with my short bow. I know, the stats I get(precision, etc) are not downleveled or as much, but they should be. It should take me nearly as long to kill a lvl 10, when I am downlevled to 10, as it would when I was leveling up. That makes the experience worthwhile to me

Suggestion: Re-level your level 80 characters

in Suggestions

I think most people will agree, leveling in this game was great. I see lots of people wishing the story would reset, or continue…things like that.

Suggestion:
When you hit 80, you have the option of leveling up another set of levels. For arguments sake, call them “paragon” levels or something like that.
-Map completion resets (achievements do not reset).
-All hearts, poi’s, waypoints..everything is undiscovered as if you were and now are a level 1.
-All traits are reset, and no points to spend yet.
-Faction choice is reset
-Every X amount of levels, you gain meaningful reward for re-leveling. T6 mats would do the trick.

This would solve/help:
-Zone populations
-Reduce the grind of T6 mats at max level
-Spread the population out
-Let us experience the 1-80 game again, because for many it was the best part.
-More chance at precursor. Possibly no scavenger hunt needed?
-Experience another faction

I would redo this in a heartbeat. Arenanet would make my dreams come true if they gave me a reason and the ability to relevel. And the extrinsic incentive would be the T6 rewards and precursor chance. I would totally be back on board with arenanet if they did this.

Your map completion resets (achievements do not reset). All hearts, poi’s, waypoints..everything is undiscovered as if you were and now are a level 1. All traits are reset and you have no trait points to spend just yet. Go through the entire game all over again, choose a different faction(priory, vigil, whatever the third is(my brain is fried))…experience everything all over again. For every 10 levels you gain…XYZ rewards, or something like that…some reward unique to “re-leveling”, but for heaven’s sake, make it worth while. No one wants a jug of karma and a coin. T6 mats would be FANTASTIC!!! Reduce the grind if people would rather re-level and experience everything all over again. T6 mats..yes!

Anyways, you get the gist…the specifics could be worked out. Basically, you are reset to level 1(carry over your gear and skill points that were spent). The map is reset. The traits are set. For each level or X amount of levels you are rewarded T6 mats and/or chance at precursor, like always.

I would redo this in a heartbeat. Arenanet would make my dreams come true if they gave me a reason and the ability to relevel. And the extrinsic incentive would be the T6 rewards and precursor chance. I would totally be back on board with arenanet if they did this.

Edit: For giggles, Ill post this in the suggestions forum too. See if anyone bites.

I like how Miflett’s mind works. Agreed.
I am more inclined to spend money in the cash shop and support the game if I am having a good time.

1-80, on 5 toons, I had a blast. I spent money in the cash shop more so then than I do now. 1000 hours in, and after playing every aspect of the game many times over, except sPvP…I am no longer having a blast. Taking a break and returning will not fix that(I’ve already tried). So, instead of fixing the cores of the game(dungeon boss mechanics, open world boss mechanics, etc) they throw temporary “get it before its too late” content at us with the added dose of “also available in the gem store”. Yes, the business model reared its ugly head into what was once fun for me. And I definately have noticed a shift in direction with the gem store over the last two or three months. They are driving that machine more so than anything else.

So why do I keep playing you are wondering? Because I have 1000 hours invested, and quite a bit of money. Im sticking around in hopes of some changes. But my lobes tell me otherwise…

OP: I agree with most of what you said…outside of fractals that is.

-The dungeons are bland. Groups skip the harder paths, and go for quick and easy. This won’t change.

-The boss mechanics are: Lots of bad floor, one shot badfloor, or tank and spank(even though there are no tanks).

-Most of the content is easy… too easy. I agree the one great dungeon everyone loved was temporary. I’ll never understand why this wasnt just left in the game.

-I like having fun intrinsicly, but being rewarded is fulfilling too.

-Open world encounters are too one dimensional and have to be due to the sheer number of people participating.

Overall, it is a very easy, grindy game. However, a very eye-pleasing game. There isnt an MMO to date that has the breath taking views and scenery that GW2 has.

Vayne, Im not trying to take your lunch money, so stop whining.

Why sugar coat this to the OP? Im not in the business of wiping noses and holding hands. I have a 2 year old that fills that slot. If he missed out on SAB, like myself, he cannot obtain those skins. The only way to do so is shell out a lot of gold into the TP. Either that, or wait until they do SAB again, if they do it again.

Its an unfortunate circumstance the OP is in, but it is reality and if you would take off your rose tinted glasses you would see this. Those skins are gone, not coming back…at least not for the forseeable future and not without dropping a lot of gold in the TP. Fact. Plain and simple.

This stems to the problem of temporary content, which they say they are addressing. After how many months of people complaining about temporary content, they FINALLY get the hint?

Mr. Vayne is at it again. See what I mean? Always popping in threads to take the pro-arenanet/guildwars 2 side of the thread.

The OP is upset because, for some reason or another, he will not be able to obtain every skin in game. This could be because:
-He took a break from the game, and has missed said content(I took a break, missed SAB, and now I wont get those skins unless I shell out 38 gold for a greatsword skin).
-He has grinded, and grinded, and grinded(would ground be a better choice of words) until his eyes bled to farm crates and coffers. Not a single skin, or ticket, or whatever.
-He refuses to spend money in the gem store for the exact chance of the item appearing in these crates/coffers.
-He does not have the money to buy certain skins off the AH.

All of these reasons are valid enough to be a detriment to his playstyle of a skin collector. And if skins are available only through temporary content or an extreme RNG system, then these structures might work against him…against his desires and playstyle.

So..Play the way you want to play. However that may be. And if you want, take a break from the game, and come back. No pressure. You might have missed out on temporary content and skins that are only available through obscene amounts of gold on the TP.

Hi, Goodcannedsam.

Let me first say, how you described yourself as a gamer, your likes and dislikes of MMOs, your time constraints, etc…thats me. 100%. I have a couple of hours to play each day(night). I enjoy PVE, although WvW is fun. I don’t mind doing the same thing over and over. I love the openness of the game, DEs, the MMO aspect of it, the story, graphics, sounds, environment..love it all. I am with you 100%.

As someone who seems to have similar wants, hopes, dislikes/likes of the MMO, let me answer your numbered questions:

1. Dungeons were supposed to be hard. They were touted as borderline not completable without a competant party. Whether through nerfs, or the developers just didn’t have a clue as to how skilled we truely are, they are not difficult. You have Story and explorable mode. Story is one path, story driven, easy. Explorable you have multiple paths per dungeon to choose. People very rarely venture off the normally run paths to try the harder/longer paths. 9/10 groups will run the same paths for these explorables. The easiest, quickest, most efficient routes possible. Citadel of Flame has four paths. 1 and 2 are the most run paths. However, path 1 is run 99% of the time because its a cake walk and you can complete it in under 12 minutes sometimes. Just to give you an idea….

2. Depends on your server. I’ve played on Stormbluff Isle for 5 months, IoJ(which is declining) and now Dragonbrand. I never have problems with empty zones. There are, for example, 15 zones…probably half of them have people of all levels running around at any given time. Thats not bad compared to a game like WoW where all but the max level zones are empty.

3. Debatable. We were promised no gear grind, yet ascended gear is a gear grind. I compare the rate at which ascended gear is released, and the stat difference of ascended vs exotic to WoW and raiding tiers. Every few months we get a new ascended slot/piece to grind for. In WoW, every few months theres a new raid and tier of gear. To me, there is a gear grind there, its just different. However, to experience all of the dungeons and content in the game, no you don’t need ascended gear(unless you want BiS stuff). Ascended gear is mostly for fractals, another form of dungeon, and you need it for agony resist(a lazy mechanic).

4. For the first 5-6 months, I thought this cash shop was a gem(no pun). No impact on game play. Now, more and more discussions are popping up since people can buy their way to the skins they want, or buy gems to convert to gold to buy the mats necessary for legendaries. Pay to win? Eh, not really. But theres no denying that every move in the last 3 or 4 months has been driven from making money off the cash shop, rather than sticking to their guns and providing exceptional content.

5. Growing pains, yes. There is truth behind the naysaying. There are certain people, even in this very thread, that only have positive things to say about the game and defend it at every turn even when he’s being short sighted( ). I tend to lean toward the more critical side of opinion, but I do have positive things to say and I do voice them. Did the game deliver? Yes and no. I think arenanet created a shade of grey when promoting the game so they can bend one way or the other depending on the direction of the wind. Does our community want gear progression or aesthetic/skin progression? Do they want harder content or easy content for newbies? Things like that. And the game is definately revolving more around RNG and the cash shop than ever before. Its leaving an awful bitter taste in my mouth.

Summary: I left the game in March for two months. Came back in May. Lots of RNG, lots of farming nerfs(silently pushing us to cash shop to buy gems, convert to gold), lots of negative things in my opinion. Living story is neat, but lackluster. The game was the best MMO Ive played up until November. Now, its no unique snowflake, no gem, no innovating game. Its a free to play game, and for no subscription, its a great free to play game. But has its pitfalls, which push me into the arms of other games.

I was actually surprised when I received this. Although I have no desire to accumulate mini pets, although they do look neat, it was nice to see that our support of the game, at least financially, was not un noticed.

More acts of this nature go a long way to winning back some of my support.

I had a lot of these while leveling, and still do ocassionally throughout the world. I think leveling in this game was my best experience so far, unfortunately. Now, my time and mind is consumed with reward, efficiency, grinding, grinding, grinding, legendaries, and is this game steering into the wrong direction of both item/gear progression and RNG/Casino-style gambling?

I have very little of these “woah” moments. But when I do, its scenery, or some awsome lighting effect. I must say, the art team for GW2 is second to none.

So my account was hacked. My friend had just come out of hospital after recovering from cancer. He REALLY Wanted to play, so I was about to log on, these are the incorect details, I was like ‘’ Alrighty then ’’ I tried around 5 more times, failed, so I contacted guild wars 2 support and they helped me, put new measures in place for my account. When I told my friend, we was skyping with cams on. The smile on his face was so amazing.

So thank you guild wars 2 support. Your all freeking amazing!

It’s so nice of you to write this, GambGaming. Thanks for helping your friend, and please send our best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I find this reaction controversial. Back in December when the Newtown shooting happened, and since there is no Off-Topic sub form(which I wonder why there is still no off topic forum), I came here and created a thread for a moment of silence for the victims of that terrible tragedy. The thread was quickly closed as it did not pertain to GW2.

There’s a time and place for everything, and the Boston Bombings had their time and place in the news worldwide. These forums are neither time nor place lest we post about every single tragedy around the world. Half Germany, parts of Czech Republic and Hungary are currently flooded. I bet you didn’t even know that. Did you see a single thread about that tragedy? Time and place.

True..time and place. Off topic forum is needed. Such an oversight. How difficult is it to create one? I’ll be suggesting this in the suggestions forum right now, I think for the second or third time.

And yes I knew about the floods in germany…one of my global counterparts works out of Germany. However, this is an english forum, hence the https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu.

This thread, while we all do wish his buddy a speedy recovery, is marginally about guild wars 2 and more about his friend and recovery. Yet this one is allowed open, and the heartless brute who closed my thread in December is no where to be found. While this DOES have a small connection to GW2, its very marginal and this just points out that the moderation of these forums is poor.

I do wish your friend a speedy recovery.

For GW2, no. Look at how many problems and bugs they miss during their supposed “QA” for one platform, let alone multiple. Stick to one.

None of their content is ever tested.
They spend all their time trying to tweak RNG, without testing sh_t. I guess I wasted some in game currency on a rigged fight. That one kitten moa was on steroids or something.

Sigh. going on 50 coffers, nothing but candy
What a gokitten waste of time.

Think I am going to sign off, maybe log in for daily and thats it. This update, while all the fun little goodies it might have, makes me not want to play. RNG galore..sickening.

I quit the game in a heartbeat and uninstall if this “raiding” is the only way, or easiest way, to obtain the next level ascended item or some other skin/item.

No. I’ll head back to a game that does raiding way better. You know of which I speak.

New legendary skins?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: cesmode.4257

cesmode.4257

Several of the legendary skins are already designed for one class in particular.
The Pistol is clearly meant for the mesmer, shield for guardian, rifle for warrior., horn for hunter.
Then you have a few that are for 12 y/o girls, with all the flowers, rainbows and unicorns.

I can understand you wanting one that fits your character, as an engineer main, not only does the class not have a fitting legendary but if I was to waste the time and resources getting one. I wouldn’t even see it most of the time due to kits.

Your post is baseless an asinine.

The horn is made for the hunter? Uh, it would work splendidly with the necromancer. Shield would work just fine with a warrior. ??? Your opinion I suppose, but I think it is hilarious.

And the bows, Im assuming youre referring to regarding flowers and unicorns, are for 12 year olds? Again, wtf? Seriously? What about a female that plays this game that wants a unicorn or thinks the flowers from Kudzo(sp) are pretty..go for it. Personally I think the longbow legendary is nice, and Im a dude. I am going after the legendary shortbow for my thief because I use a shortbow in any build and weapon set, and while some might think flying unicorns is …I’ll leave the next word/adjective to you, but I think it is kind of cool. I agree, a little goofy, but pretty unique if you ask me. I dont want to get the pistol because I don’t use the pistol in every build, same with dagger.

It’s fine and dandy that you think it’s unique. I don’t judge people for playing on the same team. I think what that guy and many of us want are weapons that are a bit more mature themed. Or at least, not goofy enough to have others question our sexuality

If a digital skin in a video game makes you question your sexuality, then you have more problems than a lack of legendary skins.

And for the record, Im happily married to my wife of 4 years with a daughter. Im a guy comfortable in his own skin, that has no problem shooting unicorns

Dragon Bash: Acct Bound Weapons Tickets, why?

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: cesmode.4257

cesmode.4257

Yeah Im really tired of the tickets, of the rng boxes that have 0 chance at skins or anything good. I can farm for an hour, I might see 1 crate..probably not. And in that crate are the following:
3 passion fruit
7 karka shells
1 passion flower

Really?

I’ll go along with this month’s event. Dragon Bash seems fun in its own right. RNG crap does not. We’ll see what July through August holds. If they continue more RNG, maybe its time to put this game down for good. I left for two months already and it was a nice breath of fresh air. Came back for no reason really, I guess partially because I have a almost 200$ invested (not a lot to you people with lots of disposable income, but hey I have a family to feed), and nearly 1000 hours. IF Guild Wars 2 continues to develop into a casino game, I’ll just delete it and take a trip to vegas or AC.

Hell, even the Poconos has a nice gambling strip now.

Dragon Bash: Acct Bound Weapons Tickets, why?

in Dragon Bash

cesmode.4257

They’re RNG dependent because ANet has become greedy beyond belief.

And they’re account bound because every time they add limited edition weapons that can be sold, the majority end up being hoarded and sold for ridiculous amounts of money long after the event, and it does serious damage to the economy.

Like SAB weapon skins..

38 gold for that greatsword. pft.
