Too Much Temporary Content Can Only Harm GW2

Colin..while I don’t think its necessary for a dev to tell the players how big their teams are, how many there are, whos working on what. Thats for you guys. But interesting any how. Thanks

On topic: This is my personal opinion, I just dont think the living story is catching fire the way you guys had hoped. In many of most posts, I label it as fluffy and inconsequential. Its bad at telling any sort of story. I loved the personal story lines and wish you would do something with that instead. However, these two week-one month bits of story are so disjointed..I could neither care less nor do I even know what is going on half the time, who is who, why we are doing whakittens just not there.

Again, my opinion. I just dont think living story, while innovative an idea, is working and if I were calling the shots, Id wind down this living story soon, and re-assign those teams to other work. But I don’t have the data, the title, or the paycheck you guys do

But thats just me.

So, we get more fluff crap. Some vendors for, most likely, lame and useless fluffy rewards. Some mini games. Some gimmicky areas with the jump boosts.

The only thing I see here that is worthwhile is the achievement point system.
I’ll be logging in to check out the rewards and them promptly logging out as there is still, nothing to do in this game.

So why even bother doing that? I never get these posts about logging in for the sake of logging in and then back out. Seems like a waste of a few minutes to me.

Only took a few seconds to type. About as long as it takes to complete this new and exciting content.

Did someone put a gun to your head and make you go to Dulfy and check out all her articles on it? No. Then what’s the problem? If you don’t want to know, don’t go there.

You’re like the people who freak out if they glimpse 4 seconds of a trailer for a film they want to see. Oh no the movie is now ruined for me!

If not Dulfy then within the day of the patch there will be 10 guides up and a half a dozen YouTube videos showing all the new content. So the secret to getting the secret toy surprise for the event is safe for at most a day.

Ah yes, here it is. The proverbial “play as you want” talk.

Noone is forcing you to go there..
Noone is forcing you to grind…
Noone is forcing you to do this or that…
Its free
Play as you want.

This is the typical response to any gripe people have with the game and development direction. Typical..

Spare us. We’ve heard it all too many times. Find something new to contest our opinions with.

GW2’s content feels more like a facebook app than an MMO that was in development for 5 years. Seriously, any person with coding experience can code a facebook app with as much story content and fluff appeal.

This is why I only play guild wars 2 maybe a small handful of hours(less than 10 probably) per month now. I spend my gaming time(20-30 hours per week) in games like Neverwinter and now Firefall(addicted).

If GW2 gave us more substantial content besides this fluff, Id be more content with spending my time and money in GW2.

We need more content, not this fluff.

Good topic and I agree. I think Ive asked in map chat or here in the forums once, how does someone like Dulfy have access to this information before everyone else? How and why is her name represented in an NPC in a fractal? What makes her so special? Because she is a big fan of the game and hosts a huge fan site? Does she work for Arenanet? Doubt it.

Anyways, to the topic: I couldn’t agree more. “Just check Dulfy”. You can complete most of, if not all, of the achievements in one or two days and then be bored to tears again.

You know, as I think about it more and more…the living story, while a unique and innovative idea, is just failing. Who cares about this story? Seriously? Its not content. Its crap.

We get with living story:
-A few sentences of story every few weeks
-mini games
-RNG boxes
-skins in RNG boxes and gem store
-gem store additions
-maybe a dungeon here and there, temporary though ofcourse
-crappy worthless loot that has no impact on the game, AT ALL
-minis
-Feels like more currency is added

Instead of:
-Dungeons
-New zones
-MORE dynamic events and areas to play as a max level player
-TRUE guild content, instead of that lame crap guild missions
-New skills(we have been playing with the same skills since August, BTW…only a few skills at a time on our bar makes for boring gameplay eventually).
-Revamped dungeons we were promised…god this cant come soon enough but I dont think anyone is working on it
-New classes/races
-Additions to personal story

These are things people want. They have substance and value. Not a kittening mini pet with some mini games and a few sentences to some story that has 0 impact or correlation to what has gone on for the first 80 levels of the game.

Man, just thinking about this game is getting me more disappointed by the minute. Had such potential, such hype and even to this day when I see folks like Colin talking about the game with such excitement during beta, and even on these forums…I get excited again! And then I think about the living story, the crap fluffy content we are getting.

Terrible..

Survey: 2 weeks or 1 month?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

cesmode.4257

I like the idea of a living story and I think 2 weeks is a good time table to keep adding to it…but the volume of things to do in the living story updates that we get is so minimal. I can spend one or two days, playing only 2 or 3 hours per day, and get most of it done(i.e. checking off each achievement box).

So I think the Living Story would be fantastic in tandem with actual traditional updates in the form of: Dungeons, zones, renown hearts, dynamic events, new skills, new classes, new races, new systems, bug fixes, balances, additions to wvw and spvp, more fractal maps, new set of fractals.. I think this list is what people want. The story is good and all, and these monthly events are neat..but its really just fluff and not really tangible.

One month would be nice, every two or three months would be better. Would be great to have a TON of content that I can do anytime within a two or three month period.

Im just skeptical as to what kind of quality and what volume of content they can squeeze into two week patches. A few bug updates? A few sentences to the living story? A few achievements to go after? A JP? Eh, not enough to keep my interest.

Need dungeons, a release of multiple new zones with renown hearts and DEs, mini dungeons(for solo play that have a lot of story inside), and then all the trimmings of bug fixes, class balances, etc. Need new skills, weapons, skins, gem store items, etc.

Id also like to say: Lets not just snip a quote from this interview and take it for gospel. What he was trying to say was that at the moment, the company is focused in living story and getting the current format down solid. There may or may not be a team working on an expansion, but right now theres no plan to announce theres no plan to make an expansion the cornerstone of their development table, etc. Its not off the table, its just not one of their top priorities right now. Pretty disheartening but not surprising at all, my interest in GW2 wanes everyday tbh, the game is nothing of which i expected it to be, TSW will be getting an expansion in a week or so so i guess my money goes to them instead..

ah well.

Ouch. And thats saying something. TSW is one of a small few games that couldnt keep my interest even an hour.

I differ in opinion. GW2 is a good game…correction a great game with great potential. Some decisions are making it go the opposite way a lot of us thought it would which is upsetting. Yes, it makes me want to spend my money elsewhere. And I do and I have.

But I wouldnt go as far as giving that money to TSW or even swtor at this point.

GW2…neverwinter… I might even pick up defiance soon. Been keeping a keen eye on that.. Could get into a shooter game.

Just to clarify a bit, as Mike said there are numerous teams beyond our Living World teams, and some of them are working on much longer term projects which we’ll go into details on much further down the road.

It’s entirely possible some of the types of content which you might traditionally find in expansions would be released through an expansion in the future for Gw2, and it’s possible we’d try something different when it comes to integrating those type of releases.

We have no final plans one way or another about expansions at this time, and certainly haven’t ruled them out, it’s something we’ll discuss more in the future.

Edited to add: Our primary focus right now is on making the core Gw2 experience as strong and compelling as possible, we’ll release a blog post later this month detailing more specifically our plans for Gw2 in the second half of 2013.

Gah just give us the blog already!! Keep telling us there is a blog…Nao!

And dont let the rose colored glasses of fanbois blind you either. You must see the game for what it is after you reach level cap, not for the 1-80 experience(which definately was awsome). once you reach that cap and if you arent leveling alts, despite what many say, the game does change. It shouldnt, according to arenanet, but it does. Not many can just enjoy the game by running around adventuring anymore, not after multiple lvl 80 characters and 1k hours in the game.

Many of us thought and felt the game was going to go in one direction, but has since gone in another. And even after that, has splintered into other directions that completely contradict what was sold to us prior to launch.

Yes, the game is good, the game is innovative, the game is attractive, the game is fun. But there are enormous negatives that cant be avoided for much longer.

Nope, you got it right. Basically need to experience the entire game(except sPvP) alot, some parts more than others(like T6 materials grinding).

And, as it stands now, gotta be lucky with RNG precursor drop.

But yes, you need to do WvW. Its not so bad, infact its fun. Im not a big fan of PVP and I thoroughly enjoy it. There are elements of PVE to WvW as well.

Edit: as the above posters, stated, there are a lot of mystic forge recipes that take a good amount of time to complete. Not nearly as long as a legendary, but take a good amount of resources.

If I dont get lucky with a precursor drop before the end of the summer, I might say screw it..go after a bunch of the mystic forge recipes and hope for a precursor scavenger hunt.

Level cap: if increased, what are the impacts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

By the time level cap increases, we will have a full armor set of ascended gear available to us.

It comes down to this:
Will that ascended gear be obsolete after the first few levels? Or will it scale with your level?

If it scales, we have nothing to worry about. If it becomes obsolete, then I dub GW2 as a cheap copy of every other MMO out there, gear grindy and treadmill.

I dont want to discourage, the game is top 1 or two out there IMO. And Arenanet is trying new things, I give them all the credit in the world. Its hard to please MMO players.

Indeed it is. But in the mean time, they have 4 teams rotating to give us two-ish week content updates that mean..nothing. That feel like nothing. A mini game, sometimes temporary…do some achievements. It doesnt keep me in the game for longer than a day or two.

I am having a hard time staying interested in GW2 because the small content updates are largely temporary, fluff stuff that have no impact on the lore, on the world…zhaitan and the dragons, albeit he is defeated, are not even an afterthought after being such a cornerstone of the game for so long.

Its like..“Hey, lvl 1-80 zhaitan will destroy the world with undead, omg….Ok now he’s dead…lets finish off the undead in Orr.”…fast forward a few months “We got some karka, and we got some kitten ed off sylvari doing something, we’ve got the Hilton in Southsun with some new investigator looking into trouble makers and murders. And now some pirates are stirring things up”. Is this a drama? Or a fantasy game?

Maybe its just the story itself that has people irked, and they don’t even know it. This is a fantasy game. I dont want to be shirlock holmes investigating things for an NPC I know absolutely nothing about for 80 levels and several months of playing after lvl cap…This isn’t “days of our lives” soap operas. This isn’t CSI miami. I want to fight Dragons. I want to fight undead. I want to fight more elementals. I want to fight insane Asuras. I want to fight ghosts. I want to fight mythical gods.

But no, temporary content that has us investigating things for an NPC that was just announced to us. (And if she was in the game previously, I hadn’t realized it after 5 lvl 80 characters. Thats how impactful she is.)

Edit: I know the game and story and lore must all progress. But do it in a fantasy setting, and you need to tie in the previous parts a bit better. Going from Zhaitain and undead to beach resorts, large spiders, and shirlock holmes isnt really ebb and flow, is it?

Regarding the potions, Im talking about on-demand use..a 15 or 20 second temporary boost. When you’re in a burn phase of a bost and sitting in the mesmer “heroism”, use your potions to give you more dps for those few seconds. Strategic use.

I agree, those dungeons wouldnt fit lore wise. I wonder if after the corresponding living story has ended, if a small patch could slightly augment the dungeon to make it fit into the world a bit more seamless.

The DEs..yes Ive noticed this. But again, it all falls into the realm of impact and meaningfulness(is that a word?). You complete the DE, youre done. You fail, youre done. Where is the impact on the surrounding area/zone? When I bought the the game, I thought that if I didnt successfully complete a DE, it would have rippling effects in the zone until I do something about it. Thats sort of the company line that was sold to us. But outside of the starter zones, largely if you fail an event, who cares. It resets, and 20 minutes mobs come again. Yes there are events that take over the town and you have to retake it. Those are good, but few and far between.

-snip-

I think we need to give it time before we see big changes like that, as that kind of content would take a ton of design and testing time. I wouldn’t be surprised if that scale of event is already in the pipeline.

Could be.

I think they could re-allocate their resources better to strive toward that sooner than later. 4 teams on 6 month rotations or whatever it is? It could be done. Instead of giving us a few sentences of a story each month(or 2 weeks), give us a few chapters instead. When these living story updates come out, you go after the achievements, and the RNG carrots. Once done, you look behind you and say “yah, and that two sentence story too..” I think they want our reactions to be a bit more than that. They have to give us more than thakittens

hard to put into words, and saying the content is fluff carries a negative conotation but its the only way i can describe it. Its like, they give us a new twist to the story, but only a few sentences. The plot of the story is stretched over weeks. They don’t give enough to us all at once. Im not talking about content here, but the story itself. On my screen I see something that says investigator kael is doing something about pirates, or investigating a murder. Great. Good to know. Now what? Then in two weeks, “she found the murderer!” Uh, I wanted two weeks for that?

This can be better accomplished in mini-story mode dungeons, solo dungeons, that take quite some time to complete. Take all of this living story stuff, throw it into dungeons as well…southsun was a small step, but take that x 10 and we have something.

How can you say the new dungeons (temp dungeons) they’ve given us wouldnt do well when they have received such a positive response? Finally, boss mechanics that are somewhat interesting!!

Yes, southsun went dead after its initial launch, but thats because there was no reason to go back. No “farming” routes for DEs. Orr was a lot more profitable at the time to do the pent/shelt runs. So they have to just design these areas carefully. Crafting professions CAN impact the game in a positive way. Maybe an alchemy profession, so you can get small 20 second boosts of whatever stat when you consume a potion. Something like that…

It is all in the matter of execution. I think most people will agree: They want new CONTENT in the form of “quests”(dynamic events and hearts), map completion, dungeons, jumping puzzles..i.e. everything we’ve been doing while leveling. Id love to have new renown hearts to complete in new zones, while doing some DEs in between.

In my personal opinion, which you may disagree with, I believe that Living Story and other temporary content are simply holiday content with no holiday tied to it.

So, with that in mind, if you are to make sure that all temporary content is permanent, why not just have Halloween and Wintersday all year round so that new players don’t miss out on those events, too?

I agree with you and the OP.

I have been playing since closed beta all the way until the March update. Took two months off, missed SAB and some of Flame and Frost.

Came back for a month in May, caught up flame and frost, did the southsun story and achievements. But Dragonbash and the pirates events..just dont seem too appealing to me. Like you said, holiday stuff without the holiday. A lot of fluff stuff, which is what the holiday events were. Jumping puzzles that went away, mini games that went away, things scattered in the world that went away.

What we need are perma changes to the world. I want events and content that literally re-shape tyria. Something like a huge dragon that torches divinities reach and the outlying zones so when you visit those areas, you see burnt homes, burnt farms, scattered people. And its like that forever. The landscape literally re-shaped. THAT, my friends, is what the living story should be about. Changing tyria. All of these small story updates had what impact on the world? I run around Wayferer and see some signs and maybe some villagers sitting around? But all in all, the buildings, the structures near hearts…remain unphased, like they don’t care about flame and frost. Southsun? I could be in sparkfly, and none of the NPCs give a kitten about that island to the south. Nothing has changed.

We get all of this content and story for free, and most of it is taken away. Nothing changes. Even the stuff that does stick around, does not impact the world of tyria at all.

Example: When cataclysm was released for WoW, Deathwing came about and literally reshaped zones, caused elementals to rise up, torched stormwind and halfway destroyed it. Not saying something on that scale needs to be done, but thats the direction you need to head to.

Basicly you want stuff that’s normally in complete expansions. For neverwinter they are just releasing things that did not make it in the full game, and make it look like free stuff. Nice for marketing but it does not say anything about the state of the game.

You could be right, and that crossed my mind. But you don’t think that Arenanet/GW2 has done the same? Released in late Aug/Early sept… with Haloween event done, and then the massive november 15 update with southsun(new zone) fractals(new form of dungeon), and ascended gear. GW2 has done this as well. Ive noticed it in a few games that they hold things back and release it soon after to make it look like rapid support.

Either way, the issue in this thread isnt the frequency of updates. It is what developers add.

(Warning, epic wall of text will crit you for 9000)
(This is merely my opinion, I acknowledge that. I welcome an opposing view, but do not come here to flame an opinion )

Hi,
So the thought of a story that changes every few weeks with new bits of content(however small and temporary) and mini games, etc…is definately innovative in the MMO space. I like the idea, I like the ambition to try something new(on arenanets part), even though my track record on these forums has been largely against a lot of the stuff they pump out. It is still refreshing to see a developer trying something new.

With that said, for months I couldn’t put my finger on what this game and what these patches were lacking. The elephant in the room has been perma content. Sure. We all say that regularly. But it wasn’t until I was viewing another game’s forum(a recently released game) and seeing what they are doing with their game, that I realized yes…it is Perma content that we need. Comparing one game to the other in terms of content updates and how they do it…

Neverwinter was in “open beta” for a month or two, and was recently released with that fail of a “raid” called gauntlgrym. But, in their first content expansion due this summer, they are giving another zone max level zone, new 5man dungeon, crafting professions, etc. All solid “tangible” updates.

I then compare that update with the stuff we’ve been getting in GW2. While some of it has been fun, innovative and unique, it just feels like a lot of fluff. Arenanet realizes this, that the content can no longer be only temporary. They need to give us more perma stuff. But, perma what? We want more zones, dungeons, maybe a new crafting profession. We want more classes, skills, a new race. We want more features to change up WvW(although, it seems they are headed in the right direction). Im not big into sPvP but those guys are clamoring for some attention(maps, different map mechanics, etc).

Simply giving us a two sentence note at the top of our screen saying that some pirates are causing trouble, and investigator kael is doing something about it…go get some achievements and run some events in existing zones..eh. It feels disjointed. Telling me in a few short sentences whats going on with this living story doesn’t enthrall me. Then telling me to go to some zone and run some events that don’t feel like they impact this story, doesn’t enthrall me.

Im my opinion, the living story is a great idea but is being executed poorly. Give me story-mode dungeons, story-mode solo dungeons…content much like the personal story we had while leveling. You KNEW what was going on in that living story, and you were involved! We need to bring that involvement back. Put this content in a variety of zones, not just one. For flame and frost, the majority was in two zones. For southsun, it was in one zone(all other zones were abandoned). For dragon bash, things are scattered throughout tyria, but most people are hanging out in LA. This week, everyone seems to be flocking to Gandarren Fields. You are funneling us to one or two zones. We need to be spread across more than that. I hate logging in after work, and trying to complete a jumping puzzle with 50 other people. I do like seeing ones populated, but funneling people into one or two makes all others abandoned.

I guess my thoughts on this are all over the place, but hopefully you get the jist. We need more perma content. We need more solid updates in the form of new zones(not just one, give us multiple in one patch so not everyone flocks to one zone). Give us new perma dungeons. New skills(we’ve been using the same skills since august…). Tease us with a new class. And weave in the living story in a more solid fashion, not with fluff narrative consisting of a few sentences and some DEs.

And Colin, you didn’t smile as much! What gives?!

It’s a very serious subject!

Hahaha!! Awaiting that RNG box that has a head-armor skin that makes your character smile all of the time! Kidding.

Anyways..still bold stuff. Even though Im at a cross-roads with guild wars 2, good luck.

I am very very very curious about what is in store for rewards since reward is the engine of this game it seems. Id like more reward for exploration, finding hidden caves, waterfalls, chests, etc.

Two weeks is bold, I hope you guys are up to the task! And I hope the “bi weekly releases” arent just a fancy way of saying “patch”…with some class balance changes, bug fixes, tweaking some things in the world, adding a few features. I really hope these releases are more impactful than run-of-the-mill patches.

And Colin, you didn’t smile as much! What gives?!

RNG
Ascended gear
Lack of permananet, challenging content.

What good will raids do when boss mechanics are so dull and predictable.

I 150% agree. When was it that they said they are working on dungeon boss mechanics? February? And we have had ONE dungeon revamped, that hardly anyone runs anymore?

They give us temporary fluff BS hello-kitty party content instead of making these dungeons better.

I bet all the furniture will be ONLY available from gem store, pass no thanks, brah. Never raided in any game so i’ll try that and hopefully it’ll be fun for more than 2-3 runs.

I wouldnt mind if the furniture was only avial in gem store. cosmetic, gemstore..as it should be.

what I dont want are gates to content. They’ve walked a fine line thus far, and wavered a bit with guild missions. Lets see how they do with this.

Make or break for me.

Would’ve been much better if all the furniture/trophies and whatever you’ll be decorating your house with would drop/come from dungeon chests. I really enjoyed this in PSU and no way in hell im exchanging gold for gems at these absolutely stupid prices (its what? 30gems for 1g? wtf…). At the end, if furniture is only available in the gem store i will ignore it completely.

More RNG in gamblewars 2? No thank you.

I think at this point Im going to log in tonight, dump all of my gold (about 120 gold) into rares and into the forge…and this will be make or break for me, for good. If I get nothing, I am done. If I get precursor, I continue. simple as that. Too many solid alternatives out there for me to keep checking this website for changes to the game that MIGHT lure me back into playing it full time.

@ OP: congrats I guess

I still think there is a hidden “luck” flag for characters in this game, because I’ve NEVER had anywhere near that kind of luck(I hardly even get dye drops anymore).

I agree. And part of me thinks that if you are a frequent forum poster…they lookat your demeanor and attitude toward the game and crap on you accordingly.

That would be very low of them, but hey I wouldn’t put it past a developer. They are human and people are known to be corrupt.

I seriously hope Arenanet is monitoring this thread to show how utterly stupid RNG is for something like a legendary. If this guy is able to acquire this many precursors and eventually sell them on the TP and make hundreds or a few thousand gold without breaking much of a sweat…Come on…

You guys failed so hard with this its hilarious. The majority of the community spends a thousand hours playing the game, not one precursor drop. Or they throw all of their gold into the forge, buying hundreds upon hundreds of rares and exotics, not one precursor. Yet this guy can get multiple? And now is making huge coin?

Unbelievably fail.

The downward spiral began with ascended gear and item progression and will culminate with their crappy version of a raid. Unless this content is accessible by anyone, guilded or not, geared or not, this will be horse kitten and I will finally quit the game for good.

Two week updates

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: cesmode.4257

cesmode.4257

Yeah, given arenanets track record of kitten poor QA even with quasi-ample time to perform QA, Id suggest to them to not do this. One month updates are even too much, simply because all they do are new graphics to LA, RNG boxes, temporary content.

How about: Changing the face of tyria for good(an explosion leaving a crater in kessix hills or something), less RNG, keep these great dungeons you are taking out.

I want new zones with new renown hearts to complete, new DEs, and a living story within that zone. I want new mobs, I want a new perma dungeon. I want more solo mini-dungeons. I want to be able to craft ascended gear without 60 days of grinding materials via daily rewards.

Can casual and hardcore players co exist?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: cesmode.4257

cesmode.4257

I don’t even know that the recent content in the past few months is targetting casual or hardcore. I don’t think its a matter of just that. I think the bigger issues lie in the fact that most of the content is temporary(and the good stuff like dungeons) and it is laced with RNG and encouragement to the cash shop each time.

Whether arguments about either of these facets can be for or against casual or hardcore, I dont know.

Im in between. When I play guild wars, I have 2-3 hours per night, every night, with more time on the weekends. I would say that I play far less than hardcore players with 5-10 hours per day and more on weekends, but the way I play is far more “hardcore” than the casual camp. I take my character seriously. I farm for mats, for drops, for rares, for precursors. Currently, I have not been able to simply enjoy the game like I set out to this time around, so I have stopped playing.

So I suppose to answer your question: It caters more toward the casual. Temporary fluff content. There is no difficulty in any content. Theres a long, long carrot on the stick in the form of ascended gear and legendaries. But all of that is grind, and hardly difficult.

This is the absolute grindiest game on the market, which is hilarious when it set out not to be. Sure grind is optional. What else is there to do? See the pretty world? Most people can only do that for so long.
