Ranged class best suited for PvE/Dung/Events?

Engineer would give you some flexibility, and probably be easier to pick up than ele. Might not be as good at 80 though, but you can spec it for 1500 range grenades and good support via elixirs and such. Grenades are slow but otherwise it’s not tough to play as a ranged class.

It’s a question of whether you prefer managing attunements or managing kits and tools.

The EB vein was never a “normal” rich vein, was it? Rich ori in the normal sense didn’t exist before Lost Shores, and the one in EB gave you more ore than regular but was still only single use.

Should point out that it’s probably worth saving the karma jugs up, then using a bunch while under the influence of a karma booster (which you’ll get randomly from things like BL chests). If you care about karma and don’t have an immediate use for it, that is.

First 15-20 levels are where the pacing might not seem so natural, IMO. So explore what you can, maybe try crafting a little bit (you can create a level 10 weapon without much trouble if you want, and crafting in general is a quick way to close a 1-2 level gap that you just don’t feel like grinding out otherwise for one reason or another). Explore the other starting zones (via your main city > lion’s arch > their main city) for more low-level content that you won’t have to struggle to keep up with.

After that, explore everything. Every aspect of exploration (even just unfogging the map) gives useful amounts of experience. If you want to follow your personal story, do so but explore the new zones it takes you to as much as is feasible. Exploring the main cities is easy as well no matter what level you are.

Otherwise, just do whatever you enjoy the most. The more you explore the more chances you’ll have to find something you like, but otherwise it’s up to you.

Sounds good to me. If you make it have the same limitations as the WvW/PvP detour (whatever those are), all you end up doing is saving people an extra loading screen which I can only see as a good thing. Of course I’m all for streamlining these sorts of mechanics as much as possible in any game, removing any restrictions that aren’t totally by design.

Silver, XP, Mystic Coins for the Mystic Forge, Karma Jug that provides 4500 Karma (boostable with the different consumables and banners etc.) and occasionally some of the other gemstore items (transmutation stones, mystic forge stones etc.)

Between the dailies and the monthly (PvE), you can get 180,000+ karma (+ whatever % boost you get from the booster) per month without all that much work on the whole. Nothing to sneeze at even if karma’s value is debatable.

I found the burglar in Mount Maelstrom some time ago (at the priory dig site in the west) but haven’t really looked since. She should show up almost anywhere, I guess, since the morphs she turns you into depend on the region IINM.

Isn’t that the one that increases the longer a given enemy has been alive in the world? So killing something that just spawned will be 0 (or close to it), killing something that has been around for a long time will give you a bigger bonus?

Damage done = (weapon damage) * Power * (skill-specific coefficient) / (target’s Armor)

Armor in this case = defense + toughness

This is for base direct damage only. Critical hits do at least 150% base damage (+ 1% for each point of critical damage you have, IINM).

Not sure what you mean by purple circle, but it may be related to a certain effect you’re causing either via the skill itself or via a combo.

Regardless, engineers are usually going to feel weak in terms of direct damage. You can end up being decent if you go all in as a grenadier, but otherwise it’s more about managing the enemy’s position and stacking conditions etc. to keep the flow of battle in your favor.

I imagine the lower tiers might be better (less chance for queues, fewer people in the maps so easier to move around without fighting) but in any event the more lopsided the better, assuming that server aligns well with your own playing time.

Jumping Puzzles - Suggestions?

Level an engineer (since puzzle achievements are account wide, you can use him/her for the ones that give you trouble). Jump shot on the rifle makes some jumps much, much easier. Can even let you skip some sections of some puzzles, I think. Fair warning, though, it only works when you don’t need to gain any elevation, so there are some key tough ones that it won’t be much good for.

Purchase exotics gear and salvage them. Sell the salvage material on TP. In this way, you monetarize those karma points. Don’t waste those points.

I thought Karma items weren’t salvageable?

Ah yes. I just realized that too. My mistake. Perhaps exotics gear is not a good way to monetarize karma point.

I believe you can buy other stuffs like cooking ingredient or crafting materials which you can then sell on trading post. This is a nice way to monetarize those karma point.

Aren’t karma ingredients account bound at this point?

Well, it could be less about the farming aspect and more just wanting to increase the supply of ori for one reason or another (maybe they intend for it to be used in more things and want to bump up the supply, I don’t know).

Put it this way: I don’t think they put the ori veins in Southsun without realizing how they would impact the market. The patched in champ tells me they didn’t want it to swing too far, so I have no way of knowing what kind of balance they really want to strike, but for those reasons I don’t think they’re likely to just remove the node either.

Could be that they want it to effect the market. Want gold to be harder to come by so that you have to spend more on gems or the like.

If not, beefing up the security around that vein might be good enough. As it is there’s no a ton of reason to go there, getting rid of the ori would make it worse. Making it tougher to reach though might help.

Not really, with the exception of things like breather masks that seem somewhat hard to find otherwise.

Depends what the situation is. If they’re weak, glue shot/static shot/blowtorch (pistol 5/3/4) is enough to control them without much trouble. If they’re stronger, switching to a kit (grenade spam!) or just plain running away (hopefully kiting only one or two of them) tend to be better options.

Yes…i’m alreading using a rifle with him: i shoot the bleeding attack,then i spam my regular attack,if the mob gets near i’ll push it backward.

However…if you encounter more than 3 mobs…that becomes a problem…

(so please,avoid to mention such abilities that last like 1 second and have 120 seconds cooldown :X i’d rather get slained than using them)

Pistol/pistol works better on multiple mobs than the rifle, but part of the strategy with a weapon-based engineer is in setting up your attack so that you don’t have to take on more than 2 or so at a time – as much as you can of course.

With big groups, grenades (or bombs? don’t have much experience there) are probably the way to go.

Cooldowns are obviously an issue, but the more you get into traiting them down the better you can deal with them.

If they could have them instanced but still WvW rules (so that they still had a potentially competitive aspect to them, as they’re designed to), that might be a compromise. I imagine they want them to stay as they are in terms of player dynamics, but if you can take the load off the main WvW player limits for people who are entirely within the puzzle areas that would probably be a good thing. This should be much easier to do for Obsidian than the others though.

Thinking about this now, there is one hitch to my earlier proposal; JPs are a legit source of free blueprints, and an instanced puzzle would throw a bit of a wrench into that by making a person who was going solely for the blueprints (as part of a larger “mission”) be forced into the queue on the way back. Not a huge issue, I imagine, it would just change the strategic dynamics a bit and anet may not want that.

Not saying its the best, but scepter/focus gives me a good foil to the greatsword for general PvE. Melee vs. ranged, both have access to blind and some form of immobilization. Gives me good flexibility without forcing me to rethink my playing style too much.

Engineer isn’t necessarily boring at higher levels. Sure, you’re most effective as a grenade spammer, but that’s not always a cakewalk if you’re going solo.

I suggest taking it in a mob control direction (pistol/pistol or rifle can both work), where you approach an encounter with a plan for managing your enemy’s position basically at all times. Battering ram to gain separation, throw mine for tactical enemy knockbacks (could stick to only one or the other, but both gives you more time if you’re not doing quick damage).

It’s not the best use of the engie’s versatility, but IMO it’s an interesting approach especially in solo play and is totally viable even late game. Can be slow going though.

My only real issue is that some of the skill points simply aren’t soloable unless you’re incredibly lucky (this goes for Malchor’s as well). Guarded by a veteran (at least) with others nearby, with a respawn timer too quick for you to be able take them down one at a time effectively if you’re a low dps class. And if nobody else in the zone needs the skill point, it’s tough to find others help out unless you want to wait a long time.

That’s a bit too much luck involved. I actually don’t mind the difficulty level overall. It forced me to re-spec and actually put some thought into my build (made me realize how poorly I’d been doing it up to that point), but some of the details just become frustrating more than anything.

To me, whether it is an exploit depends entirely on how lax the standards were for being able to open the chest (i.e. how much of the event did you have to do to get it). If you could jump in at the end and still get the reward? Exploit. If you had to participate in a large chunk of the event to get credit? Totally legitimate.

It seems like you should be able to get at least 1 character to 80 within the course of a month, if you play enough for the monthly achievements to matter to you. And karma jugs are account bound, so you really only need 1.

Not that I’d be against them keeping the low-level karka DEs or anything. Wouldn’t quite fit the story of Lost Shores though.

Level requirements are clearly ok for the monthly (by a.net’s logic), albeit in a less strict way; you cannot do the monthly unless you have a character over 30, for example. Big difference between 80 and 30, obviously, but at the same time there’s no rule that achievements have to be easy for anyone to get.

I’ll have to double check tonight, but I checked after the 2 POI in Lion’s Arch were added and those were the only 2 that I was still missing in my map completion vs. what I had been before (still have to finish one of the borderlands as well). Didn’t see any phantom POIs or vistas pop up.

Did this issue arise immediately (with the Friday update?) or did it happen later on?

Take any zones your personal story has taken you to. 100% explore those zones. Do this every time you’re taken to a new zone (to the extent that you’re not underleveled for that zone). You’ll probably always be adequately leveled for your personal story.

This is just to start, until you find areas you actively want to explore, and other things you actively want to do.

MK wasn’t laggy, at least not cripplingly so, which must have been their reasoning. And that was a weekend. Of course that didn’t include any combat or anything, it was just a cutscene and one persistent change to the area with basically no dynamic content.

All that makes me think this is more than just volume, that there’s actually something broken, but who knows.

From the wiki:
Expected damage = Base damage * (1 + (0.50 + (Critical Damage / 100)) * Critical Chance)

(Note, that’s total expected damage, so critical chance is just in there to weigh it by how often a hit is critical)

Even with a critical damage stat of zero you get 150% damage for critical hits. Each point of critical damage adds another 1% onto that.

They have to have at least some tactical utility by kiting them into enemy groups as well, don’t they? The zerg mentality kinda kills this, but if you can draw them onto for example a lightly guarded Dolyak then they should have value as a distraction.

But overall I imagine it’s just to make things more interesting.

Confusion with job choices

Check profession specific forums on this site for the gritty details (or check the wiki for things like skill breakdown), but the short answer is that Guardians are better at support than Warriors. Lots of healing skills and buffs for allies. Also tankier if you want them to be (tons of health regen options).

Necros are viable even without minions, although I don’t know enough to give you pointers (again, profession specific forums are a goldmine if you have the time to sift through to find what you’re looking for).

There’s no class that’s totally unviable in PvE or WvW (some are significantly better in one or the other, due to human vs. AI issues and the like), and each one can be built multiple ways. Some are more flexible than others, and the learning curves are different for many of them.

Low level builds get overlooked because they are hard to do, what with the lack of interesting traits to play around with. Kits are stronger with backpack regenerator trait, elixirs are stronger with formula409, grenades are stronger with grenadier, etc.

I’d check the profession specific forums on this site just to see what directions people take their builds, then work backwards as best you can to see what you can do with the trait points you’ve got available.

There’s no “1 size fits all” answer, and it will really depend on how you’re traited (and, obviously, what profession you’re using). But honestly it’ll probably come down to numbers no matter what you do. WvWing at a low level is always going to be tougher because of the lack of traits.

Personally I like toughness on my engineer; I have enough options for curing conditions that toughness over vitality works for me. Power vs. condition damage will obviously depend on what skills you care more about, but damage is never going to be great. But that’s just for an engineer.

You need some sort of grace period when you first join the guild, otherwise their value for recruitment purposes sort of diminishes. And after that, can’t GM’s just kick people that aren’t contributing to their standards?

To me, I don’t have a problem with the concept but I don’t see it as a problem that needs to be fixed with a new system, either. I think guild bonuses aren’t enough to mess up the competitive balance of the game (to the extent that they don’t screw up the game’s economy, and they’re not big enough for that to be an issue), and as such there’s no reason for there to be a universal standard for things like this. So a guild should be able to be as lenient or as strict as they want, and you can handle that just by managing memberships.
