You don’t even need 4k hours on Guard to see that it’s broken. And by broken I mean trait synergy wise.

People play “medi hamm” with 0.1.6.1.6 take hammer and call it medi hammer build. How?
You can play that specc with other weapons and it still doesn’t change your gamestyle. All our hammer traits are in Zeal. And you need 5 points to trait hammer for offensive symbols and and vuln on immob. Taking Glacial heart does not define a guardian hammer build. It’s an RNG element that procs without any strategical play involved.

But no one goes 5 deep in Zeal. Why?

Because you can’t play guard in this meta without 4 in Virtues, 1 in Honor and 1 in Radiance. So you have x.1.6.1.4 as the base build. And you have 2 points left to customize it which sadly is not enough to make a proper build.

All you do is get the basic survival skills, slap a Zerker amulet, get some traveler runes and fill the slot’s with air/fire sigils to make up for the dmg loss.

It surely works decent enough. But how can you call this not broken when you need 12 out of 14 points only dedicated for survival?

I guess what @Hunter was trying to say is, that Meditation Guardian doesn’t have flavor to it and lacks the complexity which other classes have regarding build defining traits, which rewards different styles of gameplay.

At least that’s how I feel about it.

Edit: PS: Not like going 5 points into Zeal will make things more interesting anyways. It just shows the simplicity and bland nature of the guardian traits in general, and how much you need to sacrifice for your own survival to even be viable in a competitive environment.

No, god no. I didn’t suggested it with ground targeting. Same as it is now, just with 2 charges so you can get in or out of combat. Dash/teleport forward without target. And you get a charge each 8 or 9seconds.

I would start calling guardian being “in a good spot” when we will have the ability to get in combat fast, as well as get out. If anyone played Diablo 3 Monk, we could use something like Dashing Strike.

Gives us 2 charges on Sword 2 and make it a blink that doesn’t require target. That alone would make things a lot better. If not then the Developers are going against they’re design philosophy regarding guardian, “The guardian is ment to be the first one to get in combat and stay there, being the last one out” vs “The guardian should not be played as a warrior or as a traditional tank, you have to pace yourself and think strategically or you are going to eat dirt a lot”.

See those 2 things that are claimed by the devs (I will find the link if required) go head to head and deny one another. I’m pretty sure the people that designed the guardian didn’t quite finish the job, and left it to the marketing team to screw the last pieces.

That, and make Zeal equal as a viable choice, or Guardians are never ment to have a real Power build?

As long as there’s going to be a Zerker Amulet wearer on the other team, f-ex: Thief, Mesm, Ranger even power Necro, Medi Guard will always have a spot.

Hammer is really good team wise, not so good in solo situations, where you can easily be interrupted by mesmers etc. But I wouldn’t pair Hammer with scepter never. I mean maybe I just suck with scepter but I find it one of the worst weapons for pvp.

I really like sword hammer a lot. It provides you with a gap closer and you have good sustain after you dropped a ring/immob.

In the end, problem with guard is we only have 2 builds. AH and Meditations. AH lacks the sustain of a burst spec and it’s outlasted by the current bruisers specs. So we are left with meditations which is pretty much the best thing we got now, at least we counter other squishy builds.

And I don’t find 0.1.6.1.6 to be a hammer specc. You can play Hammer also with the classic 2.1.6.1.4 or my current fav 0.3.6.1.4. You are still basically playing the same specc just with a different weapon and 2 points distributed elsewhere.

And What I find even more stupid is meditation builds that go Honor deep. Everyone knows you are going honor to inflate your vitality. And to make it worse we further have a GM that magically gives you another 300 vitality. How lame can this be?

Like really you can’t come up with other stuff just a stat inflate? Some Devs man, I wonder how they are still in charge of class balance, like for real.

If you want to level up fast mobility and dmg are key. I would recommend using Greatsword – Sword/Focus. Shouts like Retreat and Save Your Self provide you with swiftness and Judges intervention with a 1200 ft teleport.

I also recommend in the lower lvls to get 2 points in honor for Superior Aria, 3 points in radiance for Renewed Justice, and at least 1 point in Virtues.

Get gear with Power/Precision, and later with Ferocity when you unlock the third stat

All these will make you lvl up fast and breeze trough events and maps. Gl.

I noticed after Tage pushed the Meditation Hammer build to Meta, on metabattle.com, 90% of the guards role with that build. What they forget is that Tage didn’t had to fight 2 rangers on the opposite team so scepter became more relevant I guess.

I’m referring now to the solo unraked/ranked crowd that don’t play at that competitive level. Don’t drop sword yet, it has our minimum projectile defense and the teleport/blind is still too good.

I will add to that, I find taking 2 points from Virtues and going 0.3.6.1.4 go a long way when you know you can blind/stomp and you got VoJ recharged after that.

Just a tought I wanted to share with you guys. Keep Hammering!

Clarification #2: I am completely pro making things other than power/precision gear used, I am tired of seeing “zerks gear only” in the lfg menu.

All gear is viable in Pve.
Most old-school trinity fans realize this but they hate that the “zerker meta” is the most efficient so they come with ideas from ex-mmo’s into a system which is not designed around that concept.

Since all professions have a way to mitigate dmg and way to self-heal, it will never change.

The support side is very strong already. Check that Arah video by rT, full clerics and all dodge was disabled. Like how much more support you want? No dodge! Face tank Lupi all phases.

Now yes, condition dmg needs a rework in pve, and I think it can only be achieved if there is a split balance between Pve/WvW-Pvp.

Even if content get’s harder, so hard that anyone needs Knight’s/Soldier’s it will be even harder for casuals and PUG’s, and the new people to the game will probably just quit or never touch dungeons ever.

Anyways, is still funny when you get delusional people in F50’s trying to out heal 1shot’s and trying to tank when in reality they have the most selfish and team useless build.

What you are asking for is stat gated content which is against the skill based content that we have today. That is not what GW is about. People enjoy this game because of the combat system and that is skill based not gear based.

And fyi people already use in some high lvl fractals a few soldier/knights pieces for different tactics, in organized groups.

And regarding changing your stats on ascended armor, I think the game’s economist will like to have a word with you.

You need new encounter mechanics for a new meta. I don’t mind a combat system upgrade, but just keep it skilled based like now. It’s really awesome to see experienced players solo F50 bosses faster than a 5 group pug.

Would like to see that each class get’s a signature buff/debuff similar like boons and condis but unique to each class.

Ascended gear needs more reasons to exist than just more AR slots or min/max expensive boring infusions. Need. cool. infusions.

I think specializations are going to be a great starting point in this direction in expanding your class to other roles.

But in the end more things will be more optimal than others so if tanking is still not going to be one of those, tough luck m8.

90% of everyone using celestial ammy’s. Ele and engineer on every single team, no mesmers, the only warrior played was a shoutbow (imagine that) and EVERYONE was running sustain builds.

Because it’s conquest? And what you listed is currently meta for, conquest. Implement Death match Arena, max 3v3 and I be you you won’t see warriors playing only Shoutbow.

People try to change the classes based on a single game mode, which favors the classes and the builds we have today.

I don’t understand why Anet limited it self on a single dominant Pvp game mode. Please, we need a real arena mode.

Altough Courtyard exists, it’s a small scale zerg fest. Limit it to 3v3’s max and make it a map which doesn’t favor neither mobility neither area denial, no spots to hide, pure Death match 3 out of 3.

I have a question, I know using wall for you guardian solo help you get that time in under 4 minutes, which is impressive. I was wandering how much difference in time would it be if let’s say instead of wall you would be using bane signet and specc 4/5/0/1/4 with scpeter and torch traited, UC and supreme justice.

Would you still be able to beat your ele solo?

P.S. How much dmg do you reflect back to Archdiviner when he does that projectile spin?

Also, while we are on Zeal, Merging Symbolic Exposure + Symbolic Power into a single Master Major trait, Similar to Zealous Blade, would free up the 2 minors and make room for new interesting mechanics, that would help improve our Power line.

Of course also change Zealous Speed as it’s a very weak minor even for adept.

I’ve tried also with hydromancy and leeching, but on Sword/focus not on hammer. I like Air sigil on hammer because running 2/1/6/1/4 your only dmg multipliers are UC (not really reliable) and Fiery Wrath, so Air sigil get’s you that extra dmg. Plus it procs pretty often considering you are spamming symbols on multiple enemies all the time.

The Question is, why not 5/1/6/x/x for an offensive hammer build? Imagine the vuln you can stack with symbolic exposure + Binding Jeopardy and you have 2 dmg multipliers as well (Fiery wrath and Symbolic power). The answer to that is, still Absolute Resolution.

With the amount off condis out there, we are punished too hard for us to have a complete build because of our squishy nature.

Either go Cavalier/Knights Amulet and use Retributive armor and AH with shouts and trooper either Zerker and meditations but I still think Absolute res is a must nowadays.

If only we could have Vigorous Precision in the same trait line as Absolute resolution or on the same line as Symbols. Guardian Traits are scattered too much for us to have a solid build. I hate that.

Edit: I think moving Vigorous Precision in Zeal to replace Zealot’s Speed (because that trait is trash) and combining Symbolic Exposure + Symbolic Power into a single Master Major trait would go a very long way and could free the master and grand master minors for something more interesting to play with.

I play Hammer – Sword/Focus in pvp and I like the weapon combo a lot. I don’t really like to use scepter tbh. I use the 2/1/6/1/4 with zerker ammy/travelers. Inteligence-air on hammer and fire-air on Sword/focus.

Your stats don’t look bad on paper but are you sure you don’t need Absolute resolution? Extra condi removal is really helpful, especially in WvW.

I haven’t tried to solo roam with hammer, but I think in a small group this could work great. It’s up to you if you need extra condi removal.

Btw, you reminded me I need to craft myself some Furious Sharpening Stones.
Also curious if the regen from Mango food is worth it over Sweet and Spicy Butternut Squash Soup. I know it works pretty great on warrior.

@Arken, yes that. I’ve also been playing with Glacial Heart lately. While the chill is nice when it actually procs, I wish there could be a way to control the burst from the chill.
Like use it when I need it instead of being a random proc on a 15s CD.

If you compare to other on crit procs that are getting applied with no cooldown, like warrior bleeds for ex. Our Glacial Heart doesn’t look soo good anymore.

If you really want to tank, warrior and ele is by far way better at tanking. The guardian is not designed to “tank”.

Edit: And there’s no tanking in this game’s PVE. It goes by the name of support and control which all classes bring in one way or another, and of course DPS which is also a way of support.

^^ That is true. For the rest I don’t even want to bother. I would like to have a worthy “mystic ally” slotted but please, like you said don’t make me go 75% deep while giving up all my soul for the god kitten gimmick spirit weapon. Or just remove them, that will make our shield better (off-hand)

As for perfect inscriptions & signets.
Perfect inscriptions should be akin to monks focus

I’ll stop you here for a second. I don’t think bad design should be copied twice on our trait lines. I’ll just reserve this for another thread.

Some slight off topic, but still relevant to the shield.

Our shield, the off-hand NEEDS desperately to take the burden of Shield of the Avenger so Anet can safely remove Spirit Weapons from our traits and utility slots. They are the worst “AI” in the game. SotA is the only viable spirit weapon that we have, just because it can protect it-self.

So again, please anet merge SotA tech into our off hand somehow and after that remove spirit weapons from our trait lines/utility bar. Only after a cleanup of useless and gimmick traits we can make room for improvement.

P.S. I will also advocate for the removal of signets and/or redesign them as battle auras/laws/orders/mantras that affect party. Who the hell even takes Perfect Inscriptions over RHS anyways?

I’ll QQ as long as it takes man. I still feel for this class, haven’t lost hope yet.
I know this LB thing can’t be true. My first hope was for a spear wielding specialization, but since spears aren’t coming on land, my second best is something in the likes of, our virtues become something like an energy/resource bar, we get sword off hand and specialize in offensive melee support, with fast attacks, you know, bring out that fighter monk out. With some buffing/debuffing auras for the party and all that good stuff.
Or use staff as a melee weapon, you know, the good stuff.

I’m looking for some extra dinamics to fight other classes in PVP, not about support anything in a dungeon.

Wow, so yes I also do dungeons, I also do pvp, and I also roam sometimes with a WvW dedicated guild. That must make me very unique I guess. I’m not a pro pvp player but I played enough to champ up my main and the necro, and then some. True I haven’t been zerging In while now.

Anyways, like I explained above, can you please tell me what is going to be special about longbow guardian that the other professions can’t already do (assuming the leaked LB skills)? What special new role will the LB guardian take in WvW Zergs/havoc, or how will LB make guardian more viable in pvp and not bite on the existing professions.

People are enthusiastic about LB because they’re either rangers at heart or they don’t fell safe in melee and need an excuse to “Support” from afar. Please consider rerolling then.

Who real plays Guardians knows that we need more ranged options and a more mobility specialization. Anet said that will implement the classes in what they are bad. So its not about Guardian concept… it will be another new class.

I would like this change to be honest. Scepter projectile looses effectiveness beyond 600 range anyways.

But if you compare the projectile cast between LB, SB and Scepter it feels that guardian scepter has more steady consistent cast, while ranger’s LB arrow start a little bit slow but then gain superior velocity.
This is just from observation I haven’t checked the numbers or anything.

It wouldn’t be pointless but I don’t think it’s beyond reasonable … do you think it would be an even playing field to pit specialized characters against non-specialized ones in PVP/WvW? Those specializations are advantage. Perhaps I’m wrong but my impression is that these specializations are going to be restricted to the new content because they are meant to address challenges that will be encountered in the new content only.

Even if that’s not the case, I’m still hoping that Anet doesn’t break with their concepts and dilute the profession simply to appease people and stick to their guns, just like they have done in the past.

Specializations will mostly be available in 100% of the game modes. What are you referring to is masteries which some will be map gated or enhance special abilities on certain maps and once learned will be available across all characters, account bound.

Example of mastery: gliding etc.

I’m talking about roles mainly not skill copying which comes in different forms.
You want AoE range healing? Can’t beat staff ele, even necro can with wells.
Range CC? LB Ranger, Staff Ele, Staff Necro
Range pull? Necro, Engie, Thief
Range DPS? Staff Ele, Ranger, Necro
Range vuln? Engie

See where i’m trying to get at? It’s not that the weapon is similar, it’s the role of the LB guardian (“role” being the keyword)

It will just become a niche weapon, like the shield, with lost identity struggling to be both DPS and healing resulting once again in our profession getting the middle finger.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope it’s really good, but I’ve seen what “big changes” we got in those years of “balance patches”.

Well, looking through the trailer I noticed an asura guardian fighting a dragon. Its only a brief second but you can know it was a guardian because it had the trait Selfless Daring, which heals at the end of the roll. I recognized it and I looked at the trailer to see what weapon the guardian was using. It was non other then a pearl stinger. Aka, longbow.

Like I replayed that bit over and over for 10 times, and couldn’t figure out what that asura was wielding, now it does kinda look like a pearl stinger. Too bad, at least some people will be happy.

With tomes traited for duration you have 30s of Conflagrate spam, which is like 10’s more than Lich form. You do half of the Lich dmg I think, was getting a little bit over 6k autos in CoE with the standard 4/6/2/0/2. But never tried it to see how much it would hit on real players with a DPS setup. Would be fun to have our own Lich build.

Funny thing is I was trying those days to make a Cleric/medi work, except with symbols traited for healing, with hammer/GS. And with Merciful Intervention instead of JI. Didn’t work out pretty well. Maybe in an organized group it might, but in solo it’s not so good.

Spear as a very offensive weapon with shield might be an interesting weapon set, but only If they redesign shield. Spear + shield = holding a point for me. You know, like Spartans defending one place, not moving at all, but they were killing machines. You can run easily, but you can’t take point, when there’s guardian there. It won’t be op, because that kind of guardian would not have any ways to catch it’s opponent. This means it might be weak (useless) in roaming, but a must have for tournaments.

There is no reason to stay full Berserker if you and your group can’t stay alive. You will only wipe and cause frustration in the group.

If you already invested in Berserkers ascended armor, try swapping the rings to soldier, cavalier or knight’s as is much easier (my choice would be cav or knights). If that is not enough swap the amulet also.

If you have problems with conditions (Cliff side, 2 arms seal, burning) take 2 points from radiance, and put them into virtues. Go for 3/3/0/4/4 or 3/5/0/2/4.

Don’t camp Hammer build all the time. Change traits accordingly. Don’t use scepter for trash, like Thaddeus said, use it for some difficult bosses, you will still do good dmg if you spam smite. Use slaying potions/skale venom.

Would be cool for tower defense I guess… but I don’t find X-bow or even LB very thematic to the guardian archetype.

For solo play I swap sometimes my zerker + scholar to my zerker + Traveler if i’m running around open world and other stuff. Recently I started doing 2.5.0.1.6 for solo play and it’s freaking awesome. Why 6 in virtues? Well UC, Absolute Resolution and Supreme Justice.

With supreme justice my target perma burns and I have the Fiery Wrath 10% bonus 99% of the time. Add the vigor and you are pretty much untouchable. For some bosses I drop sword/focus and take scepter/torch for even more deeps.

SyS, Bane Sig + Retreat. Drop bane for WoR if you have to deal with a lot of projectiles.

It’s solid.

Personally I would like spear above all. Focus on the Zealot/Offense concept. No “tank” stuff, we have enough.

I like @Rym’s idea with virtues changed to dynamic resources.

Imagine Spear (Javelin) and a workable shield in offhand. Pff.

P.S. At least 1 Guardian appears in the HoT trailer @ 1:53 wielding a Twilight fighting that small scale dragon. You can see a symbol of wrath behind a Charr in Primeval armor jumping in the air with what it looks like a mace or scepter. After the frame changes left corner appears a Human model with Aegis shield on his hand that shoots a fireball similar to ele Staff Fire 1. Twilight Guardian does a WW and after that you see a VoJ spamm with what it looks like an asura doing a backflip with something strange in his hand. HYPE. Be sure to put the speed @ 0.25 because it goes fast.

[Suggestion] Guild Leader/Officer Tag

One thing that might help is to use a specific color commander tag and announce on map that your doing a guild run.

Most servers, since the introduction of the different tag colors have designated different roles for colors, say one for zerg, one for scouting etc. So maybe try it out see how it goes.

Also if your splitting into different parties, one thing you can do is have the leaders of each party get a target put on them by the rest of their party, it will put a bullseye on them that will make it easier for their party to see an icon above their heads.

I do agree that guilds could use such an icon, though it might have a negative effect on wvw. Anyways hope that helps.

Yes i’m aware of that, but it’s getting old and It’s frustrating some times. Things like, half of your mini-zerg got wiped and you are forced to take the WP, because the guildies don’t know your location on map, it’s time lost imo. You know, small things, but it adds up after a while.

It could change the way WvW works, but why do you think it’s going to have a negative effect? I only see it get more organized a bit.

Some of the negative effects I can see from having a guild only tag is it causing a lot of friction with certain guilds that prefer running alone, and this would only encourage them, alienating them from the rest of the server population especially militia, and never disrespect your militia. If a guild wants to run tagless or do its own raid, I dont have an issue with that dont get me wrong, play how you want. But it does cause issues so have to remember that. Also say you have to defend a keep on a bl, guild tag is up, nobody else can see it, time is lost when people could be rallying around a commander, but everyone instead is scattered. When a giant zerg is melting your keeps gates, you cant afford to lose time by being disorganized. I do think there is a practical value in having a guild tag, but it can always be a double edged sword. The last thing a server wants is friction and people feeling alienated and turning away from wvw. Ive seen guilds who run tagless get ridiculed and blamed for a lot of things, and people getting upset with those guilds calling them elitist and such, so a guild tag could very well just make it easier for this and cause further issues.

I think you miss understood what I tried to say. I never said to replace the actual Doritos with guild only tags. I said there would be a good idea for guilds that run in small groups 2 to 3 parties or even larger to have a way to see their leaders/officers on map without interfering with the main Commander tag. That’s it. A secondary guild tag that only guild members can see that coexist with the present commander tag.

And if that guild leader want’s to collaborate with the map general, he can broadcast his insignia on map that is only seen by the Dorito tag and by no one else. Thus the map commander can see the position of havoc squads etc and have a visual representation of what’s going on, on the map, while in the same time giving guilds that want to run incognito a way to organize themselves better. That’s it.

At least, before you could just drop the dome and move&forget (the dome would be still up), but now, even if this occurs (I not tested it) it will be worthless, becouse curretly is bugged and only length for 2 sec instead of 4 sec.

Nah, they “fixed” that because it was a “bug”. Now if you break the channel the dome disappears.

Yeah, basically Shield of Absorption translates into: “Root yourself for 4s and take a beating. You can detonate dome to heal a portion off the kitten whooping you took while looking stupid”

Now that’s advanced guardian superiority.
