Roamer and most mobility and speed in WvW

For the last couple months i’ve been roaming with staff ele. It’s about playstyle, understanding what to expect, and knowing when to be aggressive or get the heck out. If you play single target heavy dmg, such as thief or ranger, try to line of sight the camp npcs so you hit all of them at once. If you’re aoe be sure to keep them gathered up to maximize your hits.
With experience you will get a feel for what you can fight and what you should run from, and how early you need to pull off to get away safely. Even a class with less than amazing mobility can survive if you react quickly and know what to do. I strongly recommend a lot of practice fighting thieves, though. Warriors don’t usually chase the way thieves do, and since they’re fast you’re likely to get caught by them now and then. Glass thieves need to be pinned down and spiked, and focus damage on yourself so they get hit when coming for the melee attacks. Against dire you just need a metric kitten of condi cleanse, since outside of condi pressure they have little damage.

I used to think ele vapor form was bullkitten but having mained an ele for a while now I can say seriously that ele down state is underpowered. The only time vapor state is OP is in wvw, close enough to a friendly portal. The rest of the time ele down state is junk.
Lure eles far enough from the portal that they can’t slip through in down state, or have immobilize ready. It’s not a huge problem that you miss out on one bag.

new tournament achievements are awful

in WvW

Basically removing the achievement requirement during a tournament is an experimental step we took to reduce the incentive for achievement grinding. We want people to play WvW, and not focus too heavily on satisfying achievement requirements.

If we find that players prefer having numerous things to check off a list, then we would certainly take that feedback into account and consider it for future tournaments.

The best way to have people play WvW is to improve it.

  • After more than 2 years, the core mechanics and most of the WvW maps are still the same and people feel that the game has gone stale. Check my signature and the WvW forums for some ideas!
  • Reward level is too low compared to the rest of the game. This has been acknowledged by ANet more than one year ago, but we didn’t see any improvements.
  • Actually, we did see an improvement in rewards! Too bad it was in the new map. EOTM rewards are so good that many people from PVE AND WVW actually decide to karma/champion train there…
  • … which brings the game to even more population imbalance between servers with a full stack of dedicated WvW guilds and servers that relied on their militia and now struggle to get more people on the maps…
  • … which represents a problem for coverage. And with the current scoring system, coverage is everything.
  • a player that enjoys WvW has a very hard time gaining access to PVE rewards like the new backpack and weapon skins from Dry Top, while a PVE player needs to spend just a few minutes in EOTM (not even their servers’ borderlands!) per week to have access to the season rewards

These are only a few points. Most of them have been discussed over and over in the WvW forums, alongside with many more, but still, the feedback from ANet has been pretty much non-esistent.

Well said.

Agreeing that “the backpack is a pvp tell” is extremely dubious. All of the backpacks look the same at a glance, the held weapons are a much more obvious tell, and in the time you’d spend trying to get a good look at the backpack I guarantee the engi would already be attacking you and you’d know what kit they’re in.
As for magnet pull, the cone shaped white lines extending to your character are super visible even if you can’t even see the engi.

Sorean, what if I told you that the whole original content for this game has been balanced for groups of 5? Because it has. Including condition dmg limitations etc. And at some point the developer kind of forgot about it and went full corpo. Never go full corpo.

They removed the point of doing events, except loot. And loot is utterly meaningless. Loot is pointless. Loot does not exist. After you stop playing the game, the only thing that’ll remain with you is fun you had. Not what you grinded, you’ll be sorry about that. Unless for you grind = fun. You might be among their new target group, I admit that. I also feel sorry about that.

Seconding. I felt more immersed as a new player when I was in caledon and mostly alone- sure I was lonely, but it was like being the first person to ever see those sights and do those tasks. Making it up to a hard to reach vista or completing a big event has a lot of punch taken out of it when there are seven people hanging around afk in that spot.

This reminds me of one other thing about the progeny heart changes. Didnt the inquest used to talk to you before you fought them? I thought the recruiters would say things like, “we’ll help you gain power unrestricted by petty morals” or something along those lines, and your character would soundly reject them. Now you just interact with them and they’re automatically threatening/picking a fight.
Am I remembering this wrong?
Why would that world building/depth be removed? The Inquest have always been obviously amoral but isn’t that a little early to be saying “here, evil thing, hit”…?

This choice always felt false to me. I know it was meant to show how we affect our personal story, but it was bluntly the Pale Tree saying “What horrible thing do you want to happen to you now?” All the answers were too specific for me to be making a real choice, and you could see the tragedy coming a mile away. I understand why you guys are sad about losing the story, especially if you connected with those characters, but I understand why it’s gone, too.

I actually had no idea your answer chose your quest/the outcome. Might be why I hated Apatia’s death arc because it was specifically the thing I wanted least.

I didn’t like anything past the battle of claw island because I felt it was too dark and characters were killed before I could really attach to them (or if I did attach to them, I knew a grisly end was coming for them). Still I think this jumbling of the story shows a confusing lack of concern on the part of the developers. A lot of changes in this feature pack feel incomplete, only half-executed. Things are cut out without changing the content around them to compensate, or including something new to fill the gap.
I didn’t like the story but lack of continuity and content is going to lose and disappoint way more people than just those who didn’t enjoy the writing.

I find it relevant to post in this thread again now that I have been waiting for about two hours, just sitting and waiting for a chance to do the grenth priest fight to unlock a grandmaster trait. The timer between gaining and losing the temple again to restart the chain of events is too long. Especially while there are people defending the temple each time. I don’t know how to check when to come back for the events so I’m just sitting here waiting, doing nothing, alt tabbing… hard to believe i’m playing a game. gg

Please note: you get to fight the grenth priest during the defense. Which then unlocks the trait. And since defending is WAY easier than attacking (especially if the zerg keeps failing the attack), I really do not know why you are complaining.

Didn’t know about this, for one. It’s good to know there’s another option (too bad I wasted all that time) but also keep in mind if I had been doing the defense event I’d be screwing over the whole map that was hungry for the assault event. There were others besides me who had been waiting a long time, either for trait unlock or the loot farm.

There’s still a real issue with players getting in each other’s way due to conflict of interests.

The defense event is an entirely valid event that was put in there for a reason. It tells a story in the big fight against zhaitan, which is just as important to the game storyline as the assault event. The only reason ‘the rest of the map’ insists on letting it fail is because they think they get more loot that way. Which is, frankly, just about the worst reason out there.

Personally I do not care one bit for the attitude. I’ve had people in my guild who had 30 minutes a day to play. I would NEVER advise them to wait until the zerg said it was OK. The zerg hangs in the zone for hours at a time, they can wait their turn or do other loot events, like Plinx. If you need the trait, go ahead and do whichever comes up first. If you want your daily temple chest, same.

Whether I agree with other people’s goals or not I think there’s a problem when the system forces me to choose whether to cooperate or be selfish in order to get what I want. This game is really good about rewarding cooperation and playing together (everyone who hits a mob gets equal loot/reward so not a big killsteal problem etc). I know they want people to look forward to seeing other players, hence the megaserver. When there is a conflict of interests between letting an event fail or succeed it’s a problem, made obvious when trait unlock requirements crowd up areas with so many players.

I think it’s really funny that players are defending this tactic saying their small group of Spartans were holding out against the Persian Empire by chaining Battle Standards. Reviving the Lord does not let you win; it just wastes everyone’s time. Every fight should resolve themselves eventually. Delaying the enemy until they get bored is not fighting.

Spoiler Alert: The Spartans all died at the end to the zerg.

And that’s why no one cares about the fight or finds it interesting, and everyone has forgotten about it. Because it’s about who wins and loses and efficiency people, I’ve got karma to farm!

Also, knowing that at any time your small group sneaky cap of a keep could be kittened by one warrior sure lit a fire under my kitten to spike dps harder. It was exciting.

In my experience when you’re confused in this game you have to go back to heart and read. I do realize it’s too much to ask though of the latest generation. I won’t be surprised if next change will make levelling from 1 to 10 be a game where you are presented with left and right arrow, and have to press the corresponding arrow on your keyboard when one of them flashes green :P

And all the vistas are going to be moved to the ground level, in a neat row, because they are too hard to reach currently.

I was confused for the longest time about vistas. That surely means they must be either removed entirely or made very easily accessible (this is sarcasm, btw).

Hearts were originally implemented in the game as a way to get players to slow down, spend some time in an area where dynamic events happen. I have 7 level 80s and 4k hours in the game, and have played in metrica/with asura before. I’m familiar with the mechanics.
But I choose to play in the way that’s fun for me, which does not involve waiting around for events, i explore and if something’s happening I participate.

The way the progeny heart was moved, it is now off to the side and you have to look UP to see it, so I didnt even notice it. The golem chess was the most obvious thing I saw but I couldn’t interact with it, so I moved on. Next there was a big open space with nothing where the progeny used to be. Empty field, check. Then a small jumping exercise with diving goggles which I could not use. The whole starting area is vague. I didn’t know what to do so I started hitting enemies with my 2 skills, which was boring, didn’t give much xp, didn’t unlock new skills, didn’t seem to progress me in any way except as a slow xp grind. I wandered further away and couldn’t tell if I was meant to be there at my level or not.

The changes have impacted the conveyance, made it more tell than show, and it is a game design issue.

CDI- Guilds- Logistics and QOL

Proposal Overview
Simple in-game bulletin board for guild members

Goal of Proposal
To enable better communication between members with different schedules/timezones, and give members more tools to interact with the guild as a whole, rather than just who is online at that moment.

Proposal Functionality
This board would need to be located in an easy to see place in the guild interface, and maybe accessible from an in-world location/npc to add immersion. Something like checking the bulletin board and message board in your home instance, in LA, at the spawn of wvw maps, etc. Being able to leave a simple note – “Can’t make it to raid/meeting tonight” , “Person X, Y, and Z, please speak with me asap” , “Could the next available officer invite this person?” for the guild to see, rather than targeting one individual, might speed up communications. If there are players who are on staggered timezones, or simply have a change of plans and can’t play at an appointed time, this lack of communication can cause frustration and inefficiency in the guild’s working. I think this could be helpful both for small and large guilds, where there are either not enough people online at once, or so many people it’s hard to keep track of who can take care of what. Could also be used to organize smaller in-group events, ala “Please message me if you are interested in a guild picnic next week”.

Associated Risks
Spam, abusive messages would need to be removed by a moderator (this permission could be enabled/disabled by the leader in the rank options). As only guild members can use, abusive posters could be kicked. Old comments would need to decay over time, be pushed out of sight, or deleted after a certain condition (too many messages on board, passage of x number of days, etc) to avoid clutter. An option to set a time limit on a post at its creation would help (display post x number of hours/until x time/date).
Setting a cap on how many active posts can be up at once may discourage people from trash posting and keep the board manageable and easy to read quickly.

Sorry if this is seen as “content” rather than “QoL”, I have been thinking hard about what has caused the death of the two guilds I called home. In both cases it has been a lack of ability to delegate on the part of the leaders, who became burned out and frustrated the rest of the guild wasn’t taking as much initiative/reaching out to work on problems. As a member and not a leader of both guilds, I think lack of communication because of staggered playtimes was a contributing factor.
(though to be perfectly honest the dry matchups in wvw were the most direct causes of my guilds’ painful and sad deaths)

There may also be an issue with the arcane brilliance… I say this because I cannot get the kitten thing to combo underwater with a static field consistently, the field is often quite far from where I think the blast should hit for combo. I say static because it’s the easiest to see the boundaries of and I can get the swiftness combo if I use the arcane blast utility rather than brilliance. So, perhaps trying a different blast might change your results.
But, I don’t know.

Ironically the first 6 levels were the slowest and hardest for me, because I wanted to explore and it was clear I was expected to stay in one spot and do one or two specific tasks before moving on… I was playing with a friend so I was able to get away with running off to level 7 areas right away but without her doing all the combat it may have taken me even longer to get through the first handful of levels.

But I know that this update was intended for people very unlike myself, because I was happy with the old ways, and then spent over 4,000 hours playing the game instead of quitting it soon after starting like the demographic anet is aiming for now.

Playing my main now and on reflection, all of the restriction made it feel like a much different game than the one i’ve been playing for thousands of hours.
“Better to be overwhelmed than underwhelmed” is what keeps coming to mind. The new system is not unplayable. But it does feel like a quick fix to something I didn’t think was broken. If anet is sincerely trying to change directions I think much more time and energy will need to be set aside to change a lot about the low level world, rather than just a quick cosmetic update. I would rather see these resources put into the endgame, but it’s not my choice what they want from their game.

Node farms like the potato farm? I don’t know about other maps but the one in Wayfarer was moved and not removed. Still got taters.

Gathering Nodes are still there, some are moved around but to see them in a low level toon you have to have gathering tools equiped is all.

I can report the following:

The game can still be fun, and you can still get around a number of the restrictions if you already know how to play. Some of the features that are hidden I didn’t mind being gone. Other things like gathering I did miss, but I was able to purchase and use tools long before the level up notification. There are some issues with the changes, they are not game-ending but I think they need more work.

First, regarding story:
Level gating the story means that when you interact with npcs there is lack of continuity, as they will refer to you as “prize winner” (if asuran), etc. When you have not even been informed of a contest until level 10.

Also in metrica province, finding enemies of the appropriate level progression is completely unclear without the story guiding you first south, then north east, etc. The story used to give you a reassuring path- yes, this is a comfortable place for you to play. Without that I found myself quickly against high level enemies and without the help of my friend I would have become very discouraged, felt trapped, or forced to backtrack in a seemingly open game.

Second, regarding level up notification:
-Purely aesthetically, the animation and graphics are jarring, and sort of spook me and my friend when they ZAP out at you. (WHAPPOW YOU’RE 9)
Can also get cluttery when you’re getting additional chests/notifications.

-The information provided on the notification itself is simplified/vague to the point of saying nothing. Some menus just provide a link you click to take you somewhere else to learn. I thought I earned an unidentified dye, but apparently I had “unlocked” the dye menu, and I misunderstood this graphic entirely because I didn’t think to click on it for more info. I can see how this shows people around the interface but the notification itself is intrusive for how little it actually teaches. I think it was an attempt to be a text tutorial but they’re so fast/small/vague and easy to miss entirely that they are poor replacements for an actual tutorial.

-It’s easy to skip the notification to quickly get back to the game/clear your screen to see incoming action, resulting in- “what did I unlock..??”, feeling you missed something important without being able to check what it was.

Third, regarding story reward:
I received four staves within five minutes, two of which are essentially identical and both from story reward (so not random), image included. This is a lot of clutter and confusing, especially if you’re assuming a new player isn’t salvaging.

Fourth, weapon skill unlocks:
I found it more confusing to have my new skills unlocked without having ever used them. Rather than getting one skill at a time, suddenly I had 4 new skills without ever touching the weapon. Lot more information to deal with all at once. I think this change is a step away from user friendliness. I was also very, very bored with the high-hp starting boss when i could do nothing but click it and wait.

Last, about bundles- the fear of bundles has led to some convoluted work-arounds, and bundles will quickly appear later on, or in the case of some quests, you will be transformed and have a completely different skillset. My guess is that the goal is to avoid players having to read their tool tips. Whether it’s worth this tango to remove all bundles from early quests and then have them appear out of nowhere anyway… idk. It has just made some things less immersive and more tedious for the earliest levels.

tl;dr I found some of the changes fine, others work-around-able, and others seemingly incomplete or ineffective for the goals the dev team seems to have. The cries of “the game is over forever” are a bit too dramatic but I would like anet to work harder on true tutorials if they are worried about new player experience, rather than this somewhat sloppy and confusing notification system.

[Guild Wars 2] doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun

This is straight from the manifesto.

As you rework the trait system, please keep this in mind. We don’t want to spend hours preparing to have fun. We want to be able to experiment and try new things with our builds. The current system doesn’t allow for this freedom without a major time or currency sink.

Please, by all means, teach the new players, but ease up a bit. Give them a little more at a time (such as unlocking all the skills in a tier of a trait line at once), and really ease up on the vets who know what they’re doing (make the unlocks account-bound).

Let us spend more time having fun, and less time preparing to have fun.

Please!!

Just another drop in the bucket, but:
With my first character, gathering was how I structured my game. I followed herb patches and onions with excitement because I knew I was going to cook me some food. Everything- leveling, story, skill gain, happened naturally around that. On my way to gather, i’d get drawn into events, helping locals (who would send me nice letters, some of which I still have saved btw) and seeing the beautiful sights.

I really do want to roll a new character- I’ve been thinking about an asura necro for a while. I have over 150 tomes of knowledge and 3 exp scrolls, I could easily zoom it to 80, pay for the trait and skill unlocks, etc. But I would be losing out on what made me love this game, which was wandering from place to place freely as everything unfolded naturally, learning my class and trying new things.
I’m afraid if I try it my last interest in this game will die, and I dont want to quit this game.

If I made a thread for all of these things separately it’d be a mess so:

- Trading post NPC has been removed from all locations in starting zones. I understand the ones by the starting wp- i found the trading post a bit overwhelming my very first foray into Caledon. But why not move the TP npc to say, the crafting station area? Why remove the one that was there in Ashford?

- Leap attacks (ranger Swoop in particular) not hitting even stationary targets

- Distracting and unnecessary bouncing arrow over healing skill even if you’ve only been damaged by fall (on level 80 character)

- New cosmetic gate added to Black Citadel from LA portal. Probably meant for immersion but literally flickered into existence just to open and then was gone… really odd and breaks immersion.

- Guild Bank no longer accessible from guild registrar NPC, which means there is a total of one guild bank in LA (despite dozens of bank/crafting station/tps)

- Illusionary warden summoned on structure will not spin (long, long ago when mesmer warden worked, it was the highest damage against stationary targets)

- Node farms (lettuce, potatoes, etc) have been removed from starter maps. Eda in Queensdale no longer sells apples for chef crafting.

I may be adding more to this over time.

Also just found that starting zone TP’s have been removed. Maybe they were trying to prevent new players from stumbling into the trading post early but i’m still looking for where I can pick up my loot on the starter map.

I have over 12k achieves and was on a level 80 character. If they won’t consider the achieves at least regarding the level would be appreciated. I haven’t spent 4k hours in pvp and wvw without being able to decide when to heal on my own.

- tp fixes/updates are welcome, as are new achieves for junk/treasure

- getting significantly worse framerate :/

- new recipes in under-used areas good idea to lure players

- important fixes to glitches (promised anyway) such as being stuck in siege, class glitch fixes though i’m sorry, after the last “We fixed mesmer warden!” (JK it’s more broken than ever before, unreliable to the point of unusable) I have a hard time trusting it yet

- volunteer to move to new map buff seems alright

- my longbow ranger has stupid high attack speed now, but my ele is nerfed dramatically… too bad i find my ranger boring :

First impression, they hid information about fixes and some fun features that would have been greeted gladly, such as not being stuck in siege and the new achieves, karma exchange item, etc, while hyping a ton of stuff that is not interesting to me (not part of multi-server guild, dont collect minis, etc).

The level gating and changes sound awful for anyone who can’t skip them and it’s a shame.

I don’t need the big distracting arrow pointing at the heal skill… I turned off the new navigation thing, so how do I turn this off?

So....Yeah....how long...

With the upcoming tournament I think it’s extremely important this is addressed soon.

My jaw dropped when I read this. I’m with sephiroth, some of the best fights i’ve ever gotten in wvw only waged on because of lord bannering. IMO the fights are the fun part, not getting the xp/etc, I could easily get that from pve :/

Looking forward to what that might be, nexxe.
The trouble isn’t finding expensive, unsalvagable gear to blow karma on- it’s converting it into tradeable profit that takes so many clicks!!

Your best looking character.

Game Updates: Traits

I have 0 motivation to start a new character even though i had been thinking I wanted one, because I like to enjoy the slow buildup to the max level and with this system in place I can’t really play the class until I pay for everything. I have so many tomes of knowledge I can instantly get the character to 80, gear it, etc. with gold. But where is the fun in that? Better than my character being only half functional, but still no enjoyment in what I bought this game for and used to enjoy the most.

Getting a chest and an on screen pop up every few levels isnt going to change that.

The excessive clicking it takes to use up all my gosh darn karma and turn it into something else is really aggravating my carpal tunnel and is mind numbingly boring. I’d love to see a more intuitive system to turn karma into a different kind of reward.
Otherwise I find myself staring with dread at over 3 million karma… again.
