i built a healing/toughness/deathshroud build with high power and low crit. I tried with the axe and eventually i realized that dagger still does it better. So, atm, no.
So, the new culling changes to WvW made it so that enemies and friendlies both have a chance at being culled. They basically put friendlies and enemies on the same resource limiter while prioritizing enemies.
For WvW this probably does wonders (not sure, since I don’t leave The Mist), but tonight in HoTM (on Manville Rock) I now see it in full force.
I run from the area where amulets are sold and while up on the ledge, I can see nobody that is standing near the rock 30 feet away (the one in the middle that everyone stands at).
So, the “fix” for WvW actually applies to the Mist?
Keep in mind before some of you young folks with mid range rigs your parents bought you decide to claim computer spec a problem. It’s not. I work IT, I am a gaming aficionado and this is what I do. I run the game on MAX settings (minus supersampling) and get 60fps all day long (with LoD on Ultra) with game and OS running on SSD.
Is it game-breaking? No. Is it annoying for a game released in 2012. Yes.
I play a warrior that I run in hot join but would never consider doing so in TPVP. THewarrior will almost always be the first burn target, they do decent damage but mostly because they are 1 of the easiest classes to burn in the game. They also have 1 of the worst down mechanics so when you get them down you can almost guarantee that you will stop them. They do far less damage than some of the other melee classes, they are 1 of the worst range classes in the game, and a joke for a bunker.
1 ticket cost for paid tourney would be so good. right now the queue for temple is so short and the guilds are so good that i hope every price will be reduce to 1 ticket.i really hope it.
It is 1 ticket right now… or do you mean for the 8 team tourny?
So, after this patch (which was actually quite small for PvP but significant) I am genuinely excited for the February patch. I think that the change that you implemented on the 28th was absolutely vital. I believe Anet sees this as well and hopefully they realize that many of the things that we beg for here in forum-land will help the game.
Hopefully February will bring
- changes to glory (more significant things to spend it on)
- Solo/duo queue for frees
- Some sort of matchmaking system for the paid 1v1 queue to ensure that I don’t play a terrible team of level<10s one round and then PZ the next :P
- A more flushed out LFG feature for paids. Some interface where a team LF1 bunker can easily find one or 1 thief can easily find a team.
Anyway, thanks for this change Anet. Here’s to hoping more significant changes come in February!
Free tournies won grant tickets.
Right now its a barrier to entry for sure. and a problem.
But i have over a100 paid tickets and i havnt spent a cent.they need to reduce the cost of paids to 3. Also , if you place high in paids you earn gems (not this week w the 1vs1 tourny). and gems can buy tickets, so consistantly winning allows you to consistantly Q.
I don’t think a barrier for entry is a problem as long as it is very small. It encourages teams to group up with good players and coordinate. 1 ticket, I think, is a perfect system. I’m OK with no tickets for wins, but OK if they give 1 for a win too.
Now, having said that, I think free tournament needs to be a solo/duo only now, where players can earn their tickets back against other players that are also solo/duo queueing.
I disagree, new teams need a consequence free way to pratice.
1 ticket is a tiny tiny cost though. I do see where you are coming from; however, I don’t think 1 ticket is a large consequence. It just assures that people don’t constantly throw themselves into paids without having a small thought going into it.
A team isn’t ready to go into paids if they don’t even have 30+ tickets built up from winning frees.
Anyone have any actual hard evidence on difference? I joined and can tell a bit of a difference but I didn’t take screens or log data before patch. Anyone have an example like:
Before patch: Heartseeker did 2200 on dolyak
After patch: Heartseeker did 3500 on dolyak.
Just curious what the % of the buff was.
I always thought it was odd that those things stay long after they are relevant.

In theory, it sounds great, but there are flaws. When you get an elected party together to represent the masses, over time they become corrupt and only look out for their own self-interest. Eventually, they make changes that not only do not benefit the public but sometimes they are actually detrimental to the public they are sworn to represent.
you could still even have monthly tourenies even, for the top 8 ranked teams on the ranked ladder!
Are there even more than 8 teams?
Please don’t remove hotjoin, its the best way to farm glory currently.
the new paids give more glory than hotjoin right now ;p
Yep, the new paid system is a greater glory per hour generator than even a SB thief in a hotjoin.
I think they definitely listen, I just think they have a very terrible internal policy of not commenting on anything for fear of “ruffling feathers”. They are definitely out there though, and they hear us. They are like Santa Clause in that regards
I said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s a free freaking country and I fought for it to be that way…so how can anet tell me that my thread needed to be removed?
I don’t like the PvP system in this game so what?
A noob can get all the gear and stats from just logging in? Really? I don’t about you but everything good in this life comes from working for it, not getting a handout!
So, I’m a PvP only player and have been so since head start. I’m not sure what you’re complaining about. WvW players have gear disparity, if you like winning because of gear, go there. Are you complaining because if you decide to do structured pvp, you don’t get some sort of gear advantage??
If you’re complaining that we get the cosmetic gear, you do realize that getting the cosmetic gear in PvP takes almost 3 times as long as in PvE (someone broke down the per hour glory required compared to the same gear piece requirement in PvE).
I didn’t realize PvP only players still played. You have a great tenacity.
They call it PvP but it is really just a bunch of people sat in the PvP sub forums crying that everything they can’t auto attack to death is OP.
lol, meanwhile something gets changed because of PvP and you PvErs cry foul because “that stationary mob that I used to be able to kill while eating my sandwhich and watching netflix actually causes me use my keyboard too. This is A JOKE!”
See what I mean? They have been gone from the game and sat on the forum for so long that they no longer know how the game plays or how to act civil.
I still play the game regularly and have many many hours in this game. Also, you commented first in the thread calling PvPers whiners, and then say people calling you a whiner can’t act civil. I like you, you’re neat.

btw, I know spell X may seem normal while casting on a stationary mob that does 1 type of attack and you can chase it around in a circle; however, in PvP due to the complexity and dynamic nature of combat, some moves need to be reworked.
Look, the PvP players are already messing up the class balancing with their whining, ruining any decent PVE build and stopping the classes on the lower end of PvE usefulness from getting the buffs/fixes they need. Can’t PvEers have some things too?
You have your jumping puzzles. I’m sure most of you love that stuff.
There isn’t a single way for me to get glory in PvE, why doesn’t Anet care about us?!?
Glory is a currency to buy items that are relegated to only being used in The Heart of the Mists. Those items are cosmetic upgrades of stuff. You already have the gear, with stats, and a much easier way to get them if you don’t. You have no idea what you are talking about.
boohoo. They added something to the game that doesn’t benefit you. Didn’t they also add new pvp stuff that doesn’t benefit those of us that prefer PVE/WVW?
Big deal!
Yep, we got colored background for our action bars. Jealous?
I didn’t realize PvP only players still played. You have a great tenacity.
I have been called a masochist.
PvP players are like the house dog that watches you eat. Anet will pass out the 3 course meal to the family and make sure to tell everyone, “Don’t feed the PvP players, it will just make them continue to beg”
Also, we may hump your leg.
I do think you all are missing the OP’s point. The point is that this game was developed and marketed as a PvP esports game. Many people came to this game with these hopes. We got here, and the PvP side is kind of an afterthought with very little development while PvE is one of the most supported and feature rich experiences I’ve ever seen in an MMO. Monthly content updates, some of them gigantic?
Some of you also saying “this game has PvE and PvP”, I’m not sure why you bring that up. In development they touted a system that “separated PvE and PvP and made them able to be balanced, updated, and augmented as separate entities”. Also, they have specific PvP devs that do nothing but the PvP side (just not enough of them IMO).
So, all in all, what has happened is this:
GW2: Touted as an esport, been out for 6 months and still far from e-sport. The e-sport side seeming to have a lack of support
PS2: Game released 2 months ago with no mention of esport, has been contact by MLG to make it into an e-sport.
Smite: Game that just entered open beta has announced a $100k tournament (and is fast tracked to e-sport)
I think the game itself has a ton of e-sport potential, they need to make some tweaks (such as the MUCH needed 1v1 tournament system which after 6 months is finally here) take another look at conquest(or at least give other game types to give the players the option to decide if conquest is the most fun) and add some basic e-sport features (ladders, etc) and we’ll be there. The only frustrating part is that they weren’t in at launch, and now we’re just starting to get there. This update and the February update will really determine if they are serious about the PvP in this game.

My first post on the forums here; the new 1v1 paids system HAS to stay. Everything stated above from the OP I second. Please keep it this way.
The only thing I might add is to tier the winning teams higher up. So for example: If team A) wins 9 times in a row it will show at the start of the tourney and be paired up with the second highest consecutive winning team and so on and so on. Then some where in the world you can show the top team in paid tournaments at any given time!
This would be awesome incentive for top teams to battle it out to stay on top.
Love this idea. That would be cool to see “Team X is on a hotstreak” in The Mist (almost like a raid-warning text from ‘that other game’". Then later “Team X is on a RAMPAGE”. Then when a team beats them “C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker”.
Haha, that would add some pretty sweet drama and actually get the Mist pumped for matches they have nothing to do with.
Hello, I am a SPVP only player. I tried to get into PvE but hated downleveling and I tried to get into WVW (after I hit 30 in SPVP) but I couldn’t get into it because even with upleveling I was getting rolled by 80s (even though I do very well in SPVP).
Now, I am considering leveling in WvW because of the new buffs to upscaling. I was just curious (since I’m at work) if anyone out there can tell me if it has made any difference in a lower level character fighting an 80.
Thanks!
Why dont you try yourself ? Get your kitten there and fight like a beast !!!!
At work
Every not lv 80 full exotics character will have huge disadvantage against lv 80 full exotics one.
Before it was a gigantic advantage. Is the advantage still massive or do players that wish to level via WvW have a chance to at least compete in a 1v1?

For Jonathan (if you’re still watching this thread): what are your thoughts on making the free tournament a solo/duo only option? If you were to keep paids as a 1v1 approach with daily, weekly, monthly tournaments, you could then change frees to solo/duo only. Just a thought, but I think 1v1 paids alleviates the biggest problems with paids and that’s the fact that they never popped. I’m sure the popularity will spike enough now to where frees may be somewhat neglected. Adding frees as solo/duo queue would keep them popping and also give the solo/duo player that piece of the pie they’ve been salivating over.
Thanks for your time, and I appreciate the changes today.
Edit, even up to 3 people queing together would be fine. That way:
- 3 friends queue
- To fill the other 2 spots they either grab 2 solo queuers or 1 duo queue.
I think that the current 1 v 1 is fine, but if they are going to keep it they should up the rewards to 2 QP and 20 gems including the current rewards.
I like the idea of having a weekly paid tourney, but what if there was one every day, at, say 8 pm EST? It would garner a great amount of attention. There would have to be some sort qualifying system though to stem out the lesser skilled teams.
Matchmaking is a definite must, and they should introduce some sort of MMO/ELO.Add to that an observer mode as well as possibly a mentor mode, and the game is heading in the right direction.
Ya, I think QP coupled with win/loss ratio with a minimum games played should be an OK qualifier. I think the current system is a great way to get everyone involved in PvP while a tournament (the daily one you suggested sounds good) is a great way to then keep the super pvpers entertained. All in all though, this is the first step on the way to getting it right.

This may seem odd, but what are your thoughts on getting copper chests from losing 1v1? I think 1 ticket for 1 copper chest is pretty generous. In my opinion, I think you should get 0 reward for losing a paid in 1v1.
If you lose 1 ticket, that is easily recouped by winning 1 free. Just a thought.
So, I have a question about what is to follow the trial. Clearly, as already seen by how fast paids be a poppin’, the 1v1 approach is the way to go. You have introduced a large number of players to paids that would normally not play it. There is barely any time between queue and pop.
Where I think we should go is here:
- 1 team v 1 team stays
- Map is randomly chosen from the 4 maps
- 1 ticket cost stays, rewards stay (edit: maybe copper chest for losing is a bit much at such a low cost)
- Once per week there is a timed event for tournament style paids. Entry fee is 5 tickets and functions just like old paids did. Rewards will be similar to previous paid version.
- Introduce matchmaking. This should be easily (or easier) accomplished with only 1v1. I imagine a matchmaking system trying to match 40 people of like skill is pretty difficult.
What are your thoughts?
(edited by felivear.1536)
Cool. Thanks for listening. It was an odd choice and strange that it was discussed and originally determined that 3 was a good idea, but nonetheless, you guys did a great job quickly changing this. Btw, I hope this stays like this.
I would love to have 1 team v 1 team forever with 1 paid token. Have you seen how fast these are popping? It was amazing. Could be the best change this game has made so far. After this week, just randomize the map from 1 of the 4 choices and boom, paids be a poppin’.
I think the tournament style should be relegated to weekly or monthly tournaments to have the highest QP teams face off for a grander prize or something. It’s just such a big barrier to have to start every single game that way.
It’s like Subway saying that the $5 footlong is just a name and no insinuation of length.
Anyone confirmed Asomal’s point yet? Still just wondering if PvE heroes get to take their skins earned from killing scripted AI into PvP.
If the video was to cover just the PvP portion, then 2 minutes would be WAY too long.
What are either one of you talking about? Wait, you bought this game expecting Mortal Kombat in MMO? What does that even mean? @flavio, I have played since head start and haven’t experienced one hacker in SPVP (wall jumpers but those are exploits).
I give Anet a hard time about things that should be added, and I do agree that PvP is a ways off from E-sport, but you need to take a deep breath, add some paragraphs, and watch a preview of a game before you buy an MMO and get disappointed that it wasn’t like a 1v1 arcade fighter…
There just aren’t enough players (right now) to spread around.
Having random vs. random as it’s own bracket would stress an already shrunken population.
I know some people don’t like it when other games are given as an example, but I think it’s fair to look at games which have found that a certain model works. If you are familiar with the process of LoL becoming popular the turning point was the implementation of solo queue and matchmaking. It was after the proper implementation of those things that LoL started to grow fast. Of course Riot invested a lot of money into the tournaments later on, but the initial surge of players came before that. Even today solo/duo queue is the most popular mode, despite there being several other modes, too. Everyone who is streaming LoL is streaming solo queue.
I actually think that solo queue is going to help this game a lot rather than making it worse. Players who only want to practice as teams will get some actual practice against other teams instead of just rolling pugs and barely learning anything from it then going to paids get rolled there and come back to beating pugs in frees. It’s a vicious cycle, which isn’t fun for anyone.
It’s extremely frustrating for pugs to be playing against a team that has voice communication and synchronized builds. It puts off a lot of people from ever trying out tournaments again. And they are left with the horrendous hotjoins which will eventually bore you to death and force you to stop playing altogether. People who wish to play solo or with a friend are the majority. There are people who just don’t want the hassle of being part of a team and organize to play together at certain times. People who just want to play without feeling committed to a team. The casuals must be taken care of or this game will keep going downhill.
I understand that separating pre mades and pugs will initially make the waiting time for team queues longer, but quite frankly it needs to be done in order to give this game a chance to grow. Otherwise people will keep leaving until free tournaments become as dead as paid.
This, at least is an argument, with some fair points. However.
What about teams of 2-4 ppl. My guild often Ques with 3 or 4 of us. Thats a partial premade, where do we end up.
vs other 3-5 man premades
Seems like 1, 2 or 3 ques should be joined together, if 3 people join they get partied up with 2 friends that queued together or 2 singles. Either way, the only option left out would be 4. If you have 4 people, nut up and grab 1 more.
Just a thought, I could easily be swayed since I’m not diving too deep into the pros cons, but 1, 2, or 3 queues seem like it could work.
Enjoyed the read and I think you make great points that are perfectly explained. Also, I’m making “I got here first and some things happened but they didn’t really matter in the end.” my new sig.
Also, one of my bigger complaints about the combat in this game (even though I love it) is the visual cues. First, there are far too many combat effects blinding me to be able to make out specific animations, let alone the fact that there is such a disparity between races (ie. Norn / Asura). In the heat of battle where particles are flying like lightning all over my screen, there is no way I can tell if that Asuran character is casting a super blaster 9000.

I would love no CDs on weaponswap so my bunker can dodge forever
And how exactly would that happen just by removing the weapon CD…
That’s what I read the Op’s message as..
“Elementalists need an attunement swap CD”Like either a hard CD as in you are only able to switch every 10 seconds.
Or a soft CD 0.25 Seconds of CD after switchingEdit; Edits in both posts for clarity.
I think the OP is saying that there should be no weapon swap CDs for any class. He understands the current CD placed on eles (attunement swapping CD that prevents you from going back to that attunement for 8-12 seconds) because of the buffs you get for attunement swapping (tier 1 arcana trait).
What I would like to see is all classes end up like Engineer kits. You can swap to them at any time, add initiative cost for thief swap and remove the trait that gives buffs to eles.
I’m new to PvP so apologies if this is a silly question, but…
I fumbled my way through some battlegrounds and got enough glory points for the Golden Rabbit chest. All excited, I purchased said chest and opened it to find a bunch of weapons that my class couldn’t use.
So…glory reward randomness means we can get rewards that we can’t use? Or am I missing something? What can I do with these apparently useless weapons? They seem Soulbound so I don’t think I can transfer them to another character…hmmm…
You can also “deposit collectibles” if the item looks good. It goes into the PvP locker and from there any of your characters can withdraw it.
What I do: I keep the ones that look OK and salvage the rest.
Internal CDs on switching their attunments.
You can Attunement switch into Blazing speed for instance.
I guess I still don’t follow (maybe I’m being really dense). Currently, when an ele swaps to fire, they have 8-12 seconds (depending on arcana points) before they can swap back to that one. Do you mean a CD that would prevent them from swapping to any attunement for x amount of time? I don’t think anyone is calling for that (at least I hope not).
I’ve been saying this for a while.. Nerf Asura, make their weapons 25% bigger, and their size 25% bigger in sPVP if they are ultra tiny asura.
Totally Serious, this is definitely one of the worst parts of TPVP for me, I hate those little rat people with all my heart.
Also nerfing the elementalist; That’s their class mechanic.. it’s supposed to be instant just like the mesmer shatters are instant…. if you add a CD to ele attunements ele will become tied for Lowest tier.
Ele’s already have CDs on their attunements. Not sure what you mean there.
it increases the weight of the decision to swap to a weapon. it introduces an element of skill. also it is something that can be observed by opposing players and they can gain information about what they can do in the next 10-ish seconds. this also ties in with the whole idea of having skills tied directly to weapons, so an experienced enemy can know what you are capable of depending on your equipped weapon and if he’s seen you swap recently or not.
A large majority of players in TPvP are asura. Tiny asura are nearly impossible to tell if they are holding a focus or dagger or sword. Now, if a giant norn swaps weapons, the entire map will know.
i think thats one reason attunement eles are as strong as they are, they can use skills constantly where as other classes get 4 skills and then just auto attack while their 4 skills are on CD, or weapon swap getting 4 more but disabling the other s for 10 seconds.
ele can burn through 4 skills, burn through 4 more, burn through 4 more, burn through 4 more and then start over!
Well, although they have many moves, they are all situational. You don’t want to swap and cast moves as if you were spamming a rotation, you still need to manage CDs and make sure your situational moves aren’t on CD as well as your attunement.
because of the sigils that give you special boosts for weapon swap
Those already have internal CDs, proven by engineers kit swapping.
That’s one thing I wondered. Why have a cooldown to switch to moves that already have cooldowns. It does seem odd. I’m thinking maybe thief to blame because of no CDs and initiative instead, but it seems like they could fix that (maybe weapon swapping costs initiative or something). They already have internal CDs on sigils and things that grant buffs on weapon swap, so that wouldn’t be a problem.
Ya, I would love an answer on this. I goof around with a warrior, but I think a warrior should get 0 weapon swap CD (if not all classes).
1) Solo queue. What are the plans for this in the future? Do they realize how important this is to a large group of players?
2) What plan do they have for glory or give some hints at what they are planning to do to make SPVP more attractive for players to play. Currently if you do this game mode, you are hindering yourself for every other part of the game. This is the only mode that does this.
You asking this in the general forums which is almost exclusively PvE talk. If you asked this in the WvW forums and SPvP forums, you would clearly get opposite results. This is definitely biased.
But if Anet did start using some of the idea’s that WoW has implemented, you’ll get the community chanting that GW2 is another WoW clone. It’s a case of not being able to please everybody
Generally people get offended by popular things. Just look at the hate spewed toward Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, CoD, and WoW. It’s like when a band is underground and then they become popular and many of their first fans leave because they are too “mainstream”. People fight against anything that is insanely popular. I’m sure some psychologist has named this phenomenon.
Taking queues from successful things is a great way to progress. You take things that worked and you expand on them, then you take things that didn’t and tweak them. That’s how progress works. The automobile is better today than in the 50s. Imagine if when Ford comes out with a new SUV with more features if it is widely rejected just because it has four wheels and a steering wheel like it’s Chevy counterpart.
People need to come to the realization that progression is a fantastic thing and we can’t discount every idea just because it was contained in a previous iteration.
Edit: The ultimate example of this was with SWTOR. People participated in a 1000+ page post on ability delay. Some people, like myself, even made youtube videos and linked them to the post to show examples. It was a major issue and one that I think drove a large amount of people away. During those posts, there were actually some people that repeatedly showed up and stated that we were just trying to make SWTOR just like WoW. I was completely baffled by this. There was a clear game bug and engine problem and we wanted it fixed, and some people were so offended because they thought we were trying to turn it into WoW.
