What strat do you use for this type of glory gain? I tend to bunker down in one spot and then leave to help a close node defend then I come back. My highest ever is around 240. Please, tell me what sorcery is being performed so that I may enjoy such spoils! :P

Finally making a Mesmer to learn to counter them

in PvP

felivear.1536

i have 80 mesmer. daze/stun(mantra daze and signet stun). i didn’t complain a thing when i play mesmer in pve, wvw, spvp. i thought this game is very balanced without many bugs.(but some traits didnt work at all). and i was very strong. i could kill anyone in spvp. i did 2 secs daze 3 times and stun 1 time. people couldnt even deal enough damage to me. and i got bored because my mesmer build was too simple but i didn’t want to try other build because i played mesmer in wvw, pve, pvp everywhere. so i made necromancer. i complained too much in forum and game. even people kicked me for being necromancer before playing tournament.

Take a deep breath, we’ll get through this together. Now, let’s see if we can figure this out….what?

Finally making a Mesmer to learn to counter them

felivear.1536

So, after watching the livestream today from Jon I see that Mesmers are complicated enough that I should probably play one for a day or two to get to know them. Keep your enemies closer, you know

So, what are the most common trait / weapon / utility skills that are used? I have NO desire to play one permanently and I won’t even join Tpvp with one. I’m just interested in learning enough to take them DOWN!

So, any links to specs would be super helpful so I can play one tomorrow.

Every item you get via PvP chests should have the option to place in the PvP Locker. They really need to make it so you can hold Glory boosts and Dyes in the locker.

I think that this is the better solution. Just make the crafted PvP armor stackable and make all PvP related items able to be placed in the locker. Then the need for a bank there is removed.

Implementing the standard bank in Heart of the Mists.

felivear.1536

I’m going to give an unpopular answer to this but, I don’t believe they should add one to the mist. As much as that would make life SOOO much easier, I think it would remove most PvPers from the rest of the world and add a bunch of PvErs to the mist (quick teleport from anywhere to have bank access). Currently, it gives us a valid reason to enter the city.

In other games, when they add QOL improvements that do indeed make life easier, they over time cause unintended results (mainly, players stuck in one spot and never exploring the world or interacting with others).

So, just as I hope mounts are NEVER added, I also hope they don’t add too many features that allow for players, myself included, to just stay in one spot.

My 2c….

My favorite part about these Mesmer threads? This line shows up a few times per page:

“Mesmers are really easy to beat. WE <—- can be easily beaten if YOU <—- ….blah blah blah”

The only people in these threads that say Mesmers are not difficult to counter are ALWAYS mesmers lol…..however, you see many examples of people who play mesmers fulltime that immediately acknowledge the glaring imbalance.

Class Balance (as told by an Ele)

felivear.1536

There’s a difference between forgiving and over-powered. And the fact that no one in the right mind is obligated to gear up for 1v1. You think HB is the only viable warrior build? Ever heard of Condition DPS Long Bow + Rifle?

“Other classes do what Warrior’s do better” I laugh so hard at these statements cause Warrior got nerfed in the past for a reason and now their at a reasonable level. Just that Guardian still needs to be tweaked because any 5-year old kid can play a Guardian. That’s just how easy that class is.

Though as my last post I really don’t feel like talking. Just so Warriors get buffed for my personal amusement with posts like these.

So, wait, you’re saying that professions get nerfed because forum posts? You don’t think that meta-data has everything to do with it?

I like people like you who makes these statements. If Warrior gets buffed, I’m going to laugh at the pathetic QQ nerf because Warrior is actually really strong right now. Just that only a few people have the decency to actually look at the class’ potential.

Point is if you don’t know how the class works or have the decency to make any plays or proof via video, just don’t talk. You clearly don’t play Warrior to have a say in anything.

I’m not sure what you just did there. I clearly made a post that is about MY opinion and experience. Maybe warriors are beyond OP and a faceroll class. If that’s the case, I haven’t played anyone that has reached that level of skill. I play nonstop Tpvp and Spvp and warriors are pretty simple (imo). Their burst moves are easily avoided and their condition dmg is not even close to other classes. Again, it may very well be an Ele is rock to warrior scissors, not sure.

Edit: What makes them OP? Just curious.

Class Balance (as told by an Ele)

in PvP

felivear.1536

So, let me start by saying that this game is a blast. I am playing and thoroughly enjoying PvP. There is a ton of potential here and I’m excited about what’s to come.

Quick background on me. I’ve played all the BWE and been playing only PvP since the Head Start. I have tried all classes (i have 8 character slots; one for each prof) some more than others (rangers being the least). I immediately fell in love with the elementalist even though it is by far the most difficult, IMO, when compared to the others.

It took me at least three days of nonstop playing before I could get competitive with my Elementalist. I watched many streams and guides on how to even be effective. I now run my own concocted build (heavy defensive/healing with some burst) and I do very very well.

I say all that to say this: To beat players, I have to outskill them (which is why I LOVE the elementalist). A good player, no matter which prof, will always be a fun fight because I don’t really have the leg up with my profession, although I do have great escapability. Because my class relies heavily on skill I can quickly tell the inherent power in the other class over time because I can see there are always classes I struggle with and some that I just roll. I think this has less to do with the rock/paper/scissor effect and more to do with some classes needing balance. Here is my breakdown (in order of most powerful).

1. Mesmer – it gets to the point where I often just avoid these fights. A bad player will still cause me headaches sometimes and a good player is nearly impossible to beat.
2. Guardian – really depends on the trait/build here, but a defensive one is pretty amazing. The sceptor / shield sword / focus variety can be tough, a good mace spec can be tough. Again, as with most classes, the player will drastically effect the outcome.
3. Engineer – Very versatile and can be long fights. I never know what to expect going into one of those fights. I find myself surprised by the outcome quite often.
4. Theif – if you catch one before he catches you, they are pretty simple. The constant stealthy ones can be difficult to kill, but you can easily avoid death with them. Now, if they can get to you unprepared with their steal / backstab garbage, just be prepared to respawn.
5. Ranger – A good ranger is very tough. Very bursty / tanky / conditiony(lol) and if played right can be a force. I’ve seen many not so good ones though.
6. Necro – seem to be buggy and also very dependant on the player. I have seen some that are dominant, but many that are pushovers. If a necro is great at managing deathshroud and dots, they can be monsters in Tpvp.
7 – Elementalist – Some of the best players I’ve seen are Elementalists and that’s due to the very high skill cap. Most of the worst players I’ve seen are also elementalists for the same reason
8 – Warriors – Once I learned to dodge all of their burst moves (100b / kill shot / etc) they are pretty easy….which I learned to do about 45 minutes after playing PvP. Most other professions can do the same things a warrior can, but better.

I am at work and just thought I would give my 2cents on the current balance. I am by no means a professional PvPer. I have 170hours /age and almost all of that is in PvP.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

If they say, “So, were going down this path and making this change and nerfing this class and buffing this one..” and so on, I’d be fine with that. I just want to know that they acknowledge the changes that I want. If they don’t agree with me, that’s fine, I just want to know. My opinion is only one and for all the people who agree with what I want there will be an equal portion that hate it. I just want to see where were going to know if it’s for me.

Ranger Pets Attacking Enemy Treb

felivear.1536

I mean I guess I have never really tried to attack a pet, since that is usually a terrible strat for pvp. Maybe they are all this tanky and I’ve never noticed. I just wish it didn’t pull you off the treb, otherwise I would just sit there and eat his dmg and pop out every once in a while to heal.

Ranger Pets Attacking Enemy Treb

in PvP

Posted by: felivear.1536

felivear.1536

So, I have a question and maybe a ranger can answer this. I’m rank 17 PvP and I have played my share of matches. I recently have noticed a trend that I haven’t seen before.

When I, or other players, are on our treb, a ranger will send his pet (usually he’s at the clock tower) and his pet attacks us, which pulls us off of the treb. The pet doesn’t do much damage at all but he is as tanky as bunker guardian. The dog can heal more than I can put out damage. Now, typically you would just ignore such a thing, but you can’t. If you try to get on the treb and continue firing, one hit from this dog takes you off.

Is this something that is intended? Now, I do think that the ranger was very smart for doing this as it made our team have to have 2 people at the treb to kill the dog.

If there are any rangers out there that can explain what traits a ranger has to use to make his pet unkillable, I would be appreciative.

Edit: I have 8 character slots and have played all in PvP except the ranger. I don’t like them. The pet was the sylvari dog. Not sure if that matters.

Downed State.

in PvP

Posted by: felivear.1536

felivear.1536

Another problem with the downed state is kind of the opposite of what’s been discussed here. If I am at a node protecting by myself and someone else comes up to fight me 1v1. If I beat them and get them down I DO NOT finish them off. Instead, I damage them only to get them to about half way down and then let them try to heal up a little and then do it again. Since there is really no way to just “release” they either have to slowly bleed out or they keep on trying to unsuccessfully rez while I damage to stop their heals. Now, sure sometimes this backfires and other players arrive and rez them or the warriors get back up. But many times I can keep a player out of the fight for a very long time by intentionally not downing them

If you have a point, post it logically and list why you think it’s worthy of another look from the design team. Likewise for the other crowd, if you find something that someone doesn’t like and you in fact like it, post your opinions on why you think it is a good feature. If you get to a point where neither of you is changing the other person’s mind, just head to another topic and agree to disagree. The name calling and reducing someone’s post to a pile of rubble because of one 3 letter word is just asinine.

Veteran pvper's problems in GW2

felivear.1536

WoW PvP, as something that is an afterthought, is BETTER than the GW2 PvP that’s been thoroughly thought through and is the core of the game.

Ouch.

That is your opinion my friend, if you feel that strongly about it, play WoW, do not try to change this game.

My opinion however differs, WoW PvP is a joke, having hugely unbalanced classes that change each couple of months to force players to keep leveling and grinding new classes to stay fotm works very well with a subscription business model.

Having a rating system that encourages exploitation and wintrading alongside Boosting for rating and RMT operations and no rating decay makes a very stagnant competitive scene.

Personally I prefer balanced classes and skill based PvP, I say this very tongue in cheek but if you prefer WoW PvP, ’go back to WoW.

If it was a joke and took NO skill (which is what you are alluding to) then please, tell me which rank did you reach in WoW? Which season did you place in the top % to get the arena season awards? I’m sure you just rolled that FoTM class and wound up winning 100% of the matches right? Oh, that’s right, you didn’t because although that game has major balance issues, it’s still skill that prevails at the highest level of PvP.

felivear.1536

I continue to run into 1 common thread derailer that just blows my mind. It’s the “you must have come from * so go back to that game!!” 2 problems with that statement:

I am sure some of you didn’t come from that game, but I am willing to bet that 80% of you saying “GO BACK THERE” also came from there.

2nd: I took part in HEAVY discussion from another game that released last year. During that games short lived life, me and some other forum goers had some very constructive feedback to provide on things such as: too much CC, zones feeling lifeless, and most importantly ability delay. Some of us took the time to actually post videos (me) and others wrote posts that had to take hours to compile. Those people and I had high hopes for the game and thus we weren’t taking the problems lightly because we wanted the game to succeed. Well, you know what ended up being dominant in ALL of those threads? You. The person saying “GO BACK TO THAT GAME IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT HERE!” Well, how did that turn out? You know what we did….we left. Now that game is a joke.

Having said that, this game is nowhere near the fail that that one was. I love this game, I am having a blast and putting many hours into it. But, you know what? It’s not perfect. Like anything I really want to succeed, I’m going to post my thoughts and feedback in hopes that they listen. Some of my issues are my opinions, some of actually known issues that many people face. Either way, I do it out of love. If I didn’t love this game, I would just log out, uninstall and then move on.

So, really, the entire purpose of THIS post is to let you know that I’ve seen your type in SOOO many other games. Just as many people exist that claims every game is the * Killer, there are an equal amount of you. The irrational person that thinks any criticism is a direct attack on their product and an attempt to make it like something else.

I have almost literally played every MMO launch since SW:G. Some of them I enjoyed thoroughly, some I was just passing through, some I took time to “grow to love” and some I really tried to enjoy but couldn’t.

Anyway, the forums are for feedback, like it or not. And since that other game had 14 million people play it and this game is a game designed to attract that same crowd, chances are SOME OF THE VERY PEOPLE YOU SHARE THESE FORUMS WITH will have played that game. GROSS!!! you say. Well, we love this game just as much as you and want it to succeed. So, stop your childishness or be prepared to face the same fate that many other games have faced when their community cries out for tweaks and they fall on deaf ears.

TL;DR – stop being lazy and read the post.

Veteran pvper's problems in GW2

in PvP

Posted by: felivear.1536

felivear.1536

Regarding long/strong skills: there is a reason Blizzard had to implement PvP trinkets to somewhat balance control skills. It’s not stellar design and my bet is they did not like to do this, but they had to implement reset buttons for everyone because control skills are a little bit too strong, i.e. binary in WoW.
Modern game design, on the other hand, focuses more on “soft” control skills and counters. If you look at Starcraft 1 vs Starcraft 2, that’s a good example of hard counters dominating the first game, with very strong units and many unforgiving situations where the game could be instantly lost if you had not answer B to threat A right away, etc., while units in SC2 lost overall strength (Mutalisks, Zerglings, Zealots, Sieged Tanks etc. are all weaker in SC2 compared to SC1).
Now, the control skills in GW2 are a bit too soft IMO, to the point where you barely feel their impact (many last about as long as it takes to set them up, and if you reach the point where you would notice an effect, it’s already gone). This also mitigates the fun task to figure out how best to handle CC and makes combat too much about just doing damage as quickly and efficiently as possible, because control skills don’t give enough time to win the damage back you didn’t do while using the control skill.
That’s maybe why many feel that combat in this game is too spammy and too much of the same between professions.

Very well put together response. I do feel you are on to something with the “too soft” idea. I feel it is definitely a balancing act. You have to find that spot where CC is applicable but not overpowered. I think we’ll get there, this game is still an infant. It’s not like SWTOR where the game was fundamentally flawed from the start (engine flaws, design flaws, etc). This game is just a few tweaks away from being a really stellar PvP experience.

I agree. Past accomplishments mean absolutely nothing for future results. That’s why, all those MLGers out there were just as good as you on day one of GW2, because skill is reset when a new game comes out….am I right?

I understand that you have this irrational hatred of other MMOs that came before this game; however, your ability to communicate or take other viewpoints is pretty impressive. Anyway, I am done with replying to you because you are a sad, strange little man…you have my pity. Farewell.

Edit: I will agree with you on one point, the “This game needs to be more like WoW” posts are pretty overwhelming. I don’t like those; however, we are trying to establish some sort of bases for our prior PvP experience. How would you like us to do that? I know for a fact that playing WoW for 6 years competitively puts me at an advantage to other people in this game that have never played MMO PvP.

So, to try to separate the HS spammers zipping flailing around the node from the tactical pvpers that take time to create solid builds and execute a game plan: how do we say the difference here on the forums?

Am I to take your word that you’re good? Judging from your demeanor, I assume you are bad. You say you are good. How do I know that? Because you say so. Do you have prior experience? Have you done this before?

felivear.1536

I will never take someones opinions / concerns with a game and try to invalidate them; however, I will make counter points. I too am a “veteran” PvPer. I’ve pretty much only PvP’d in every game I’ve played in the last 10 years. I was 2200 plus in wow (not the greatest but very competitive) and I will say that this game has a LOT of potential. There are some balancing tweaks that need to happen (quickness, confusion, retaliation) but that is very fixable.
One thing you have to realize though is this game is better off because of the lack of those cooldown face smashers. Games like WoW are gear/CDfests. You win because of skill, sure, but you win more because of gear / CDs. A warrior in WoW can pop all his CDs and just melt the face of anyone, then for the next 5 minutes, he’s a normal PvPer. That is not fun, it’s not balanced, and it causes headaches for balance.

IMhumbleO, PvP should be about skill and builds. You should play the build you want (ranged, condition, burst) and then win because of your design choices / skill.

For instance, the HS nerf was fantastic for thieves ( I play one at rank 16 right now). Thieves had a move that was making terrible PvPers look good. They were spamming 2 and coming out victorious because of a move. That’s broken. That move was designed to be a finisher, not an opener / spammer. Now, it’s a finisher and the decent thieves go on.

Another nerf that I think will come is mesmers. My friend is a VERY casual PvPer and he competes in PvP on his mesmer. He can’t survive at all with other classes, but mesmer makes him look like a seasoned vet. That is my test of a broken class ( I call it the Chris test :P)

WoW had many examples of that. You had classes that were facerollers that even the baddie could use to stay competitive. This isn’t a sub-to-play game, so Anet doesn’t have to have these easymode classes to keep the baddies paying that monthly bill.

Anyway, I’m starting to go down the rant path and I’ll quit. I would just like to end with this: I disagree. This game isn’t completely balanced, but it has all the foundation to finish strong as a solid PvP game, and that’s all I want.

if you’re a team player, you wont really care about your rank points but the win. with this note, the title that you win matches (game and profession) is much more important than rank points. don’t you agree?

I fully agree with the OP. Many people neglect team-based strategy because it actually lessons your glory; thus, it causes you to LOSE many matches because you have incompetent teammates.

Edit: I also fully agree with every point in this thread. I love this game but it’s not without flaws. Many of the points you made are the same issues I have.

Defending nodes and auto-balance

in PvP

Posted by: felivear.1536

felivear.1536

So far I am really enjoying this game’s PvP. I keep telling myself I am going to level but I find myself queuing for SPvP over and over (rank 16 atm).

I do have a few criticisms so far but many of them will be fixed I’m sure (balance issues mainly).

1 — One thing I have noticed though is the zerging that goes on in pug SPvP. I have seen on many occasions where I have tried to get people to defend and have been told flat out that they are looking for glory and defending doesn’t provide it.

Suggestion: For every ten seconds that you are inside of your node that you currently own you get X amount of points (I know botters would benefit from this but just perma ban 100% of botters and that will knock it down).

2 — Also, when you dominate a team in SPvP often they leave and then an auto-balance happens. The player that gets auto-balanced to the other team is completely screwed. Can we add a feature that when it asks for volunteers, the person who volunteers first to go to the other team gets the “volunteer trophy” that gives them the same amount of extra glory that winning gives you? Problem solved.

Thanks all and I’ll see you game!

P.S: A heavy penalty for choosing to leave a match would also alleviate some of number 2’s issue. I use this one with caution however, because I don’t want to have the chance for being penalized for being kicked or dropped from a match. In the game’s infancy this is occurring more than I would like.

I love this game. I have gotten 5 people from work to play and I describe in great details about why I love this game and that in turn gets them excited. Then, they buy it.

The goal of the trailer is to do the exact same thing. I know it is art and art is going to be polarizing, but I also feel like a trailer’s job is to pull people in and get them excited.

I may be missing something in it and I may be the only one who is feeling this way, but I just don’t see it doing the game justice.

Edit to expand on my thoughts:

I think the live-action and game footage creates a disconnect. I believe many people play MMOs for the idea of escaping into another reality and “becoming” something that they are not in real life, if only for the short time they are logged in. I would have prefered the entire trailer to show the beauty and depth of Tyria and the ongoing wars.

Fantastic thread. Couple things I would like to add:

SPvP weapons: I’d like to mark which ones to toggle as “not a collectible” so that when I hit “deposit all collectibles” it doesn’t keep depositing my weapons I still intend on using. On my thief I keep 2 daggers, 2 pistols, 1 sword, and a bow in my bag, later when I deposit my collectibles it keeps putting anything not equipped back in my locker.

Better way to determine mesmer clones (although enemy health bar text would fix this)

Edit: Removal of your game tag from forums. I don’t want this posted here.

Mesmer clones: Which is which?

So, I’m opening this in hopes that someone can tell me some way to quickly determine the mesmer clone. I thought for sure that when you use the click-targeting option (reticle gets placed above their head) that would solve the issue; however, as soon as they go stealth, it’s gone.

I am sure there is some really simple way to determine (other than the bad players who backpedal and roll when no damage is coming). Some of the best mesmers I have fought come back and they never move a drop making it impossible to distinguish clone from player. The names give no clue. Also, gosh darn some of those mesmer clones hit hard.

Anyway, any help telling me how to find the Mesmer and not a clone would be greatly appreciated!

Heart of the Mists Damage Tool

in Suggestions

So, I really stay in the Heart of the Mists most of the day as I wait between tournys and just to test builds. One thing that I find really frustrating however is the lack of a tool to help me calculate my DPS. Currently I’m having to add dmg with steady weapons and divide by the seconds in combat. I come to play a game, not do math

Suggestion: Can’t we get something that is only used in the Heart like a tool, or even after the end of combat with a certain dummy, you get a mail message that says, “Attention testing combatant, your last fight lasted 147 seconds and you performed 121,000 damage at 823 damage per second. Your highest damage output: 1 bleeds, 2 backstab, 3 blah blah blah”

I know any typeof damage meter is heavily frowned upon by the “casual” community as they don’t want to have this game turn into min/maxing and theorycrafting, but to not have some sort of tool for testing purposes is not good (IMO).

Thanks and see you in-game!
