No one is talking about cloak and dagger. Most of the complaints are about D/P thief.
The thread is not about D/P, it is about revealing on a blocked stealth attack, in general. If it was about D/P it should adress D/P specifically.
Revealed on block? Yes, needs to be done, since if something just tried to hit you and your magic shield (which you have a magical link with) or your sword got hit at a position, you’ll know exactly where the enemy is at.
Then it shouldn’t be possible to block an attack you can’t see coming.

He means if you’re focusing on backstab, you need to run D/D, have Hidden Killer,
And how is Hidden Killer going to do anything when you are revealed most of the time, as was suggested?
3s reveal? Are you telling me you can’t survive 3 seconds? If so, l2p man, l2p.
Have you difficulty remembering the context of the posts? Are you reading seprate posts? Read the thread and place posts within context.
There is just too much delay with the stupid pets. I would rather just stow them in WvW and take a buff to my dps.
They should separate pet-ai from general mob-ai and start work on making them work better.

If you’re still leveling then a level 80 build with full traits will not help you.
For Sword/Pistol with blackpowder it doesn’t matter much as, but 15-20 in acrobatics is good for extra dodges from Feline Grace (blind doesn’t work against bosses) and acrobatics has several food Adept traits, trickery has some nice init related traits, you’ll want a bigger pool and more regen to be able to use BP and Pistol Whip frequently. Other then those, damage.
But do experiment with your builds.
I like how a majority of people in this thread believe thief will be utterly broken without stealth. That alone should say a whole lot about the class.
It will be, as damage (backstab, sneakattack), survival (condition removal and healing) and control (tactical strike, surprise shot and invis) depend it. Plus the thieves archetypical
Non stealth is played in PvP, which is quite different from Wvw. There are very few videos of stealth-less Wvw roaming thieves to show how viable non-stealth actually is.
I really enjoyed sword main, while it was viable.
Basically I would rather see Anet give you thieves far more evades in place of stealth.
They tried that briefly, then killed it again.

i’m not one to say anything on this since i mainly run a build that doesn’t use much stealth but…if a thief only considers backstab as his primarily offensive means, he can invest in some defensive stats. the key is the hidden killer trait. the rest you can probably guess.
Hidden Killer, while revealed? Are you sure you just said that? Or are you thinking they should change Hidden Killer to grant 100% crit chance while revealed?
I often wonder why all the upcoming changes have to be so hush-hush.
The auction house maybe? Just mentioning sigils in the live tream made some prices jump (temporarily)
… So when you are done with collecting them all then there are those 11 left in the store (maybe thats then the only push there is?).
For a collector it really doesn’t matter if it’s 1 or 11 mini that is missing, the collection remains incomplete and anyone collecting them is basically forced to spend real money.
Edit: $10 gets you 800 gems, for $10-15 p.month you can get a lot of RP items from the cash-shop. At least you have the choice.

I’d rather have mobs heal like the Elemental/Robot in Dredge fractal.
So Poison and CC will have a point in PvE.I loved that I had to interrupt heals and other bad stuff in GW1.
So much. Or shutting down a couple of hydro’s that could otherwise wreck a pug.
Except now a days people want better graphics, which is a resource hog. …
AI scripts run on the server, client side graphics performance is irrelevant for it’s performance
This title ….

LOL.
Wonderful, in this case it certainly would have paid of to read some of the comments before jumping in. Just proves something, I suppose.
It’s not just MMO, it’s also RPG and you can’t just postpone adjusting a low tier class until the end of the ‘season’
Has happened, quite annoying when it happens with C&D.
You could run P/D with Carrion (maybe mixed with some Rabid), a carrion sneak attack might very will hit harder then a berserker’s backstab. Then again, berserker has lots of little add on bonuses that can really add up. On the other hand, condition duration increase can do a lot for the bleeds on sneak attack.
Anyway, I think if you intend to do conditions in PvE you should get high condition damage specs or your bleed stacks will hurt those of other condition players.
the rangers sword/dagger is the playstyle what i image for thives. stealth is a bad mechanism.
I’ll just assume you really do not realize what you are wishing for us. The day they make thief sword like the the horrible rooting ranger sword I will quit.
A service account is generally not a game or software in that sense.
That is true, can’t find a thing about that – it’s a relatively new concept in a fast changing environment. I could imagine the sale of accounts with fully equipped and levelled characters as something they’d have a good reason to want to prevent account from being sold.
I don’t rent games.
Yes, you do.
No, you don’t. You can buy it, use it and then sell it. You can not do that when you rent.
Read the Guild Wars 2 EULA “again”, you rented an account until Anet says so.
And no explanations will be given upon termination.
Do read them, I am sure there’s something about applicable law in most, if not all EULA’s. I can sell my copy of a game no matter what you think about it. We have shops buying and reselling used games and software.
I’d say around 130,000 concurrent users at prime time.
And Anet have sold 3.5mill+ copies worldwide. That’s ~3.7% of the total sales that actually play? Someone please tell me I have my figures wrong.
Well played Anet.
/rollinginit
edit: I read ‘concurrent users’, which means not everyone that plays. Allow for maybe 10% of the total population that bought a copy. Still…
Concurrent implies at the same time. If 10% of your clients are concurrently only it means they play, on average, 2.4 hours per day. Which is a lot. At 3% they’d be playing, on average, 43 minutes per day. Seems pretty decent.
or you could add a trait to make physical damage bypass armor, protection buff then just make it deal X amount of damage with out been effected by precision and critical damage.
And protective skills now work (partially) retroactive and undo (some of) the damage taken the last couple of seconds.
Well, no need to waste rankpoints in AC mastery then, which makes choosing all the easier.
noone is going to believe you. we all know the truth and i’m sure the dev’s know it too. i wish they fix your class as soon as they can. thank you, anet.
I wouldn’t count on it happening, either of them. Even if they only fixed ranger sword that would be something big.
Though, they did rework the dervish in GW1, eventually.
(edited by frans.8092)
what i’m really getting at is that thieves shouldn’t be able to stealth that much. it’s insane. at least, minimize the amount of stealth that they can execute.
It’s their bread and butter. Damage comes from stealth, healing comes from stealth and control comes from stealth. To even just reduce stealth requires a complete rework of the traits. weapons and utilities. Try searching youtube for stealthless wvw roaming thieves and compare that to the stealth videos. Why do you think the people that play stealthless thieves in Wvw don’t upload many videos?
Yes I did. Thats why i started using keybinds. And i dont recall myself ever using A and D as turn left and right, maybe except when playing Doom or Wolfenstein without a mouse controls.
Don’t forget Descent with a few more axis to control.
But that is not the issue. There is no issue. If someone gets by with clicking utilities and keyboard turning, good for them. A ranged character plays very different then a melee char which has to stay on top of it’s (kiting) target.
I don’t rent games.
Yes, you do.
No, you don’t. You can buy it, use it and then sell it. You can not do that when you rent.
Thank you, damage beyond backstab was indeed what I was thinking about, but a handy quick rule of thumb is always welcome.
i finally was able to download a screen recorder. yay!
Thank you for posting your video, it takes some courage and it’s appreciated.
If you have an intel sandy-bridge or better processor (and a discrete video card) I would point you to Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), a gem that can make use of the (likely unused) on-cpu (intel) video processor to encode captured game footage to H.264, saving huge amounts of processor cycles, for which Guildwars is always starving.
In Pve there is not much reason to use d/p over s/p, as the latter has cleave and pistol whip and both have the near invincible blind field. D/D comes to full expression when you can max out gear and traits, and against bosses.
Why not change the profession skill to “die and relase loot bag”, that would at least have been honest. But you can’t even be that.
As the Centaurs say, not worth the effort.
Did that formula include Cloak & Dagger and autoattacks? And how?
Short video of it happening.
Have you tested with a second, alternative target for the illusion to shift it’s attention to once it looses the first? The wiki article on Illusions implies they should lock onto another (or be destroyed)
“They attack only one foe — generally the one targeted by the mesmer when created — until one or the other is destroyed. If the target runs away, the illusion will lock on the next nearest target” One remark on the talk page also implies this was their behaviour at that time “The trait triggers when the illusion is killed by a foe, when the illusion loses its target and when the illusion is replaced by a newer one”
On shortbow/pd? What interrupts?
I mean, you can actually kill warriors without abusing of stealth, you have plenty ways to avoid damage. If you haven’t the capability of spam stealth you will be fine, you only need to rely more in others mechanics and not only abuse of stealth.
You mean, like protection? Oh wait … Ehm, then blocking, mhh, nope ….
Or blinds maybe, mhh, wait that’s with stealth – ah and the #5, for only 6 init. Well, we have 3 dodges, and the #3 on SB and P/D, I mean, it’s not like we actually need initiative for damage skill, since we have Vital Shot and Trick Shot and who knows, maybe they’ll dance around in our Caltrops.
Why don’t you show us how you kill Warriors without using stealth, with a shortbow and P/D’s Vital Shot, and all the interrupts we have. It’s not october 2012, when Wvw was full of up-levelled, inexperienced players …
Are you certain ferocity is going to scale 1:37 to Critical Damage?
224/0,06 = 37,3
Seems a bit too much of a nerf, so much that it might make condition damage a better third damage stat then ferocity ….
Or a bug fix? If they were supposed to change target or get destroyed when there is none.
“An illusion is a type of creature summoned by a mesmer that serves to draw aggro and fight alongside the caster. They attack only one foe — generally the one targeted by the mesmer when created — until one or the other is destroyed. If the target runs away, the illusion will lock on the next nearest target.”
If loosing target due to stealth is treated like ‘target running away’ then I could imagine this actually was a kind of (bug) fix.

Hell, you could even lone wolf pretty much the entire game. I did FoW hard mode with a group of 7…me plus six heroes.
Peeps did FoW Hard Mode with 3 heroes. With 7 heroes one could aggro the entire burning forest at once just to get it done faster. Without tanks.
Also rangers… do something with Longbow. Anything.
How about … Distracting Shot
Essentially with lower crit damage, precision is weighted as less important and power remains unchanged.
Nike also explains it in this video: http://youtu.be/AYX4f5pehSU
Depends on the scaling of ferocity : crit damage.
Power has always been the main damage stat, that will not change. Currently crit damage is the prefered second stat to raise, and precision the third. That may change, depending on the scaling of ferocity : crit damage, and @ 1:1400 precision will be on par with ferocity. The reason, without going into detail, is that by lowering the effect of the added stat the base 50% becomes more important.
I’ve already stated the facts that the thief auto attacks are higher damaging then most abilities with cool downs. Example.. Backstab uses no initiative points and can be traited to crit 100% of the time and has only the stealth reveal as a cool down.
Incorrect, Backstab does not fall in the category ‘auto-attack’, stealth is a precondition for backstab, as well as proper positioning, and entering stealth eats initiative (6 for C&D, 9 for BP/HS), or utilities with long cooldowns.
What other class has an ability that can do up to 12k (depending on the target) every 6-8 seconds. I say 6-8 because you need to set up the backstab beyond the reveal time out.
If even a ranger can do this, I’ll just assume every other class can too.
And again I smoosh stealth thief arguments with factual information.
Your ‘facts’ were bit off, so I am beginning to wonder if you might be that mesmer’s phantasm that stole the broom thinking he was a thief. ;p
(edited by frans.8092)
You actually can kill them, with interrupts, blinds and shadowsteps.
On shortbow/pd? What interrupts? The shadowstep blinds when you put yourself into melee range only. And how do you deal enough damage, clusterbomb is really slow and can be kited from, unless you’re in melee range, poison damage is insufficient to kill, caltrops is pointless against players.
I’d really like to see how it’s played, in Wvw, roaming, you know, take camps, fight of decent players.
Why is his spec cheese, yet perma stealth abuse isn’t?
Because calling something cheese requires no thought or insight.
All the Power, Precision and Crit damage you can get versus all the thoughness and vitality you need to survive. About 15k health is common and upwards to 2500 armor (unbuffed).
Commonly used is, i think, Berserker trinkets and a mix of Soldiers (head, coat, leggings) and Berserker armor(shoulders, gloves, boots) .
Ok, thank you.
Wouldn’t that message give a good indication of where the thief is?no.. he could be everywhere around u in melee range or use a ranged weapon. the message doesnt give a sign where he is.
Mhh, I thought the evasion messages where positioned and the others would too, still he’d most likely be where your back was.
problem with blocked attack during stealth is skills like http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Counterblow or http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Riposte or http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Counterattack doesnt work properly. only http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Illusionary_Riposte works cause the spawned ai.
They keep blocking like they do with ranged attacks?
stealth itself is a problem, cause the only counter is mindless aoe what itself is problem. so fighting a problem with a problem isnt really healthy.
Lot’s of people kite like mad, quite annoying really
like this?
http://youtu.be/-PFHILLZyxc
But, can we perma stow the ranger then?
Try to get informed about what they said about ferocity before jumping up the barricades.
If we allow arbitrary and subjective criteria for “winning”,
The only objective winning in GW is in sPvP and that format has strictly limited gear.
Ok, thank you.
Wouldn’t that message give a good indication of where the thief is?
