Why so many rangers now?

Rangers are the coolest class. The s/d weapon combo is just magical to play. It feels so graceful. The second I put a sword on my ranger I effectively stopped playing all other classes.

Plus PvE is ridiculously easy as a ranger.

Ranger sword must be the most horrible weapon in all of guildwars the way it moves roots your character. It looks flashy but is absolute trash.

Since the game launched players have been asking for “underflow” servers. Some zones have been dead since the beta like Snowden Drift and then at release with Timberline Falls.

I personally like the Southern Shiverspeak moutains precisely because they are so quiet, and it’s a beautiful environment, going from snow to grasslands and woods is like going from winter to spring. I hope Megaservers don’t crowd them too much now.

Its only just that warrior rifle 1 has longer range, more damage, longer bleed, nicer animation and same attack speed.

And?
How is this a useful comparison, …

They are both ranged weapons, one is clearly stronger on it’s auto-attack. Explain why this would not be a useful comparison.

It was, in a way, a bad thing, at least it’s one reason they gave for not having dedicated healers in GW2.

GW1 is still up and running and still on the shelves of retailers, you can dive right in and find out.

What I want simply is a game with monks like gw1 had where fights can actually last longer than a couple of minutes. …

Or hours. If I remember correctly they got rid of healers because (GvG) fights typically lasted the full duration and tended to end in stalemates, or the VoD type of escalations to force an outcome.

I noticed that I can’t seem to salvage equipment I’ve transmuted with the new wardrobe system. That ties up some runes on now unused stat spreads that I’m sure I could remove if only I spent many, many gems on upgrade removers.

That is a more serious problem. Not being able to salvage runes from temple armor is an understandable discomfort (ecto’s), not being able to salvage from crafted and looted gear is a bigger flaw.

With the reduced cooldown it could be ok on Sword.

So often times thats just a seasoned player or two doing it on propose with the clear intention to upset a group of people they know it’s out there.

Or sometimes you’re in the neighborhood and not one to pass up the opportunity for a little brawl with a champion, or you’re seeking a sparring partner to try out change in your build, or your character being a part of Tyria and a hero decides to help the locals.

There may be many reason for me to engage a champion but deliberately upsetting a group of players, champ train or other, is not one of them. Thank you.

I read somewhere that any macro that does multiple actions (such as: Auto-attack, then use skill 5) are not allowed while macros that are pseudo rebinds are allowed.

So no that would not be allowed, but I doubt anything would happen if you used it. I have used an auto clicker for buying obsidian shards before they made it where you can buy 10 at a time.

Well, technically in Windows, a double-click is a single event, or action, so. It’s also typically the same use as the ‘enter key’, or, a single keystroke.

Yes, you can, you can swap to a ranged pet – since this is such a prevalent problem having a ranged pet on swap should be considered – or set it on passive. Though personally I think it should be possible for Ranger to completely stow their pets. And pets on passive should avoid getting hit better.

[Suggestion] Cap conditions by source.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: frans.8092

frans.8092

The problem is that every single condition has to be updated every quarter second in order to determine damage (because if you get might, for example, the bleed stacks that you’ve already put on someone will tick for more damage). This means a tremendous amount of data must be transferred and processed every single second.

If your proposal ends up costing the same amount of data transfer/processing, then it’s not viable.

A better solution is fire-and-forget conditions: Once applied, the damage-per-tick is unaffected by changes in the condition damage of the applier. This saves a LOT of data transfer and processing power. As a free bonus, it makes more sense flavorwise as well: once I’ve applied my bleed, why would me getting might change the damage of that bleed?

I’d like fire-and-forget, could possibly also be treated as group (per application).

Imo, if the amount of processing would be the same in this way then with the current system it would be preferable, since it removes the cap.

I am not quite sure about the source for this, but i think the current cap is a engine thing put in there for SPVP reasons and spilling over into the other game modes.

I thought it was for resource reasons. You can still cap conditions when doing the bookkeeping per source, to prevent it from becoming overwhelming, but it would no longer hurt (large) groups of condition players.

I don’t quite understand why conditions would have to be capped, balance wise, and direct damage not. If you can gank a player with physical damage 5:1, then why not with condition damage?

[Suggestion] Cap conditions by source.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Putting in special mechanics like that would result in them splitting the server code between SPVP and the rest. Not going to happen.

Why would this require a separation between PvP and PvE/WvW? Both can work just fine with the proposed mechanics.

More likely is that they put a special mechanic on the big mobs that do something with the conditions when they hit some kind of trigger, as that can easily be introduced in PVE without any server code changes.

Special mechanics for singular bosses don’t work very well currently. People are unlikely to throw their builds around for a single event. If conditions are a bad choice in all of PvE except in one event, they’ll avoid that event rather then change gear and build for it.

You are mistaken, seeing unidentified ip-numbers on a security page listing login adresses should raise the alarm, as that is it’s purpose. They should add rDNS and/or whois information that can identify each listing so that we can properly evaluate the threat without having to use external tools every time we login.

[Suggestion] Cap conditions by source.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: frans.8092

frans.8092

In most of the group oriented PvE (and Wvw) conditions are mostly ineffective, in large part due to the limits on the stacking of conditions of one type per target.

Rather then raising these limits on the target, I propose to move them, or the bookkeeping for them, from target to source, from the victim to the player (or npc) inflicting the condition. At the same time the cap per condition on the source can be lowered to keep resource usage in check, say 5-10 bleeds on 3-5 targets per source.

This might increase the effectiveness of conditions in PvE against world and dungeon bosses, and in WvW zerg fights, while at the same time keeping the effectiveness of conditions in 1v1 situations in check.

Not good enough.

That security page is to give us information about account use and abuse, an unidentified ip-addres will – and should – ring alarm bells. As I can not remember, and can not be expected to remember – these 32 bit numbers ip numbers I suggest the account page does a reverse DNS name lookup or – when failing to find a proper host name – a whois lookup.

At the very least. add an rdns lookup to the listed ip-adresses and get your own ip-adresses a proper DNS entry.

Yes backstab has positional requirements for maximum damage, other stealth attacks do not and as such it matters not whether visible they just want to land the blinking attack.

Incorrect, Tactical Strike has the dame requirement as Backstab

For Backstab however, if your issue is block or a single aegis, given the frequency a backstab can be used at when it doesn’t hit, you’ll very likely still get the back bonus unless they dodged.

Thief will never hit a backstab while visible, has nothing to do with technical requirements but simply because people only have to turn towards the thief, which is pretty easy when the thief is visible.

Also given that most blinds will require a target and you are untargetable in stealth, it is a minor concern.

No, there are plenty of blinds – possibly most – that are (PB)AoE or applied without target.

Title says it all. Stealth is a great mechanic in this game, but the fact that it is absolutely impossible to prevent or counter is ridiculous. Thieves rely on this skill a great lot which is fine, but in my opinion it’s a broken and cheesy mechanic. I think Thieves would be in a much better place if they didn’t rely so much on it and were compensated in other ways to make up for this.

Thoughts?

Each time I hit a necro, it prevent life force regeneration for X secs
Each time I hit a mesmer, a clone dies.
Each time I hit a warrior, it reduces adren
Each time I hit a ranger, a pet or spirit dies
Each time I hit an ele, it locks a random attunement for X secs
Each time I hit an engi, it prevents use of toolkit for X secs
and finally
Each time I hit a thief, it remove stealth

If I were to modify stealth.

Leaving stealth causes .5s of reveal. Failed attacks cause you to leave stealth.
Successful attacks apply 3s of reveal. If stealth didn’t end due to a successful attack, stealth attacks are still available for 1s or until a successful attack is applied.

Makes blind too strong, imo, nobody would be punished as badly for the easily applied blind as D/D because there is no means to get rid of it before stealth ends. If you want to reduce spam during stealth, make stealth attacks cost x initiative, and restore x initiative when hitting with that attack. Or make reveal restore the initiative, as it is, in your suggestion, always applied on a successful attack.

You will not be able to land a backstab when visible.

NO!
If a player gets overrun, they die. As simple as that.

It’s not your game to design. As simple as that

If a class can back out at any time, rather than predicting the loss ahead of time and backing out then, it becomes imbalanced.

A thief can not disengage at any time, no matter how slippery they may be, if they miscalculate and back out too late they die, same as for everyone.

  • Condition duration isn’t that long, but you can reapply bleeds and torment with ease, so I chose to get runes focused on defensive stats (they actually have your conditions tick for more per tick, but shorter duration).

Don’t exist, only conditon damage, sigil of bursting and corruption will increase the damage per tick.

  • You can stack 25 stacks of bleeding and a few seconds of poison on 5 people with ease.

You can not, especially not without increasing condition duration – sneak attack applies 5 stacks for 4 seconds and without increasing duration the wear of before applying the next 5 stacks.

  • Sigil of Hydromancy can help you stack bleeds; drop caltrops (utility, not evade) and swap to short bow while you’re in the middle of the group. Then drop Choking Gas and Shadowstep out. Watch it stack for those three seconds and /laugh.

Caltrops works only against NPC’s – and works very good against them I might add. But sigil of hydromance takes the place of sigil of doom which is a good source of poison (you don’t have many sources of poison)

_Edit: There’s a myth that you deal more damage with Carrion than with Dire gear – that’s not true.

No myth, sneak attack scales with power. More power == more damage and best of all, you don’t need buffs up all the time to have that boost. The crystal buff also (a)does not compensate the loss of that power damage and (b) crystals buffing durations help more. A completely condition focussed build will also be utterly powerless against some opponents.

You do loose toughness though, which is the most important passive defensive attribute for an attrition build.

It is a shadowstep, not a gapcloser. Heartseeker is a gapcloser.

But I am done with this. At this stage it would have been better if the Thief class had never existed in my opinion.

Perhaps, but here we are, it exist and that can not be undone for as long as this game exist.

Any attempt at suggesting changes …

Many ‘suggestions’ are nothing less but insults and trolling, some are well intended but lack insight or miss important aspects, some are actually good and balanced.

The Thief class could be so much more if it did not have to rely on all these cheap tricks.

(1) ‘cheap tricks’ is a highly subjective qualification and, quite frankly, not particularly inviting to open discussion. Imagine someone walking in on you suggesting to discuss the ‘cheap tricks’ you’ve been using.
(2) steal is the specific F1 class mechanic with a variety of uses and effects beyond Mug. Reducing it’s range to, essentially, melee range is a huge nerf.

But people just don’t want to see it. So I apparently fell into the trap of trying to offer something to a brick wall.

…A thief can stealth on me, or a nearby NPC mob, or even just do a heartseeker leap combo. Then he’s in stealth.

I go into defensive mode and pop a moderate cooldown.

He instead backs off out of range of me. Then he restealths after his initiative is back at full and I’m down a cooldown. (Since 6 initiative recharges way faster than 30 seconds.)

BP+HS costs 9 initiative and provides 4 seconds of stealth and an additional 3 for every extra 4 seconds of stealth. The 9 initiative takes 9 seconds to restore, not 4. He might just have enough initiative for another round after the first stealth wears of, but after those 4 seconds run out he’s ran out of initiative.

This is called “resetting the fight.”

Resetting the fight is going far enough to go out of combat. There is no point in confusing the discussion with new definitions.

The problem comes from thief’s insane mobility and his unique recharge system paired with the fact that he has stealth on his weaponsets.

What insane mobility on D/P D/D? Shadowshot? Initiative, revealed. Heartseeker? Uses initiative and risks revealing. SoS? 25% IMS is standard and the 33% (capped!) ims in stealth is only a very small increase over 25%.

Purposeful severing of ties to GW1?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: frans.8092

frans.8092

All our actions from GW1 either caused a disaster in GW2, or failed to prevent it. And while killing of Great Destroyer technically slowed down Primordius awakening, remember that it in itself was a retcon (in original version it was strongly suggested our battle was actually what woke him up – they changed that later on due to people’s dissatisfaction). Now, again, all the effort we have put in defending LA (both in GW1 and GW2) is being overturned, because Anet wants to show off their pet villain. I shudder to think what disaster will befall Orr due to defeat of Zhaitan. Because, based on last years experience, it’s just plain impossible we actually improved the situation there.

Without our interference in the Flameseeker prophecies Kryta would have fallen and become the battlefield for Mursaat and Titans. Without our and the Ebon Vanguard’s meddling after the fall of the dragon champion, Kryta would have been torn by civil war, there would be no queen Salma and no queen Jennah and there would not have been an alliance against the Dragons.
