Rune of the Strength

in Thief

Posted by: frans.8092

frans.8092

Just test the build you think you want to run with it and check how much might you generate, use video capture like Open Broadcaster, Fraps, Afterburner or something similar. Runes of strength will multiply that by 1.5 – so 8 stacks becomes 12. Take the difference, multiply with * 35 power or 1.5% damage per extra stack. Add the 7% and that is what Runes of Strength add, in the example 4*1.5% + 7% = 13%. Compare that to the alternatives. For reference, Fury adds approx 15% damage.

You can test in PvP as the runes are free there. I was lucky to have them, as before the update they were like 70 silver a piece. Wish I’d bought a spare stack

Now, knowing that trinkets are relatively easy to get, and armor is not, I would choose ascended armor so that I would not be locked into HK.

Uhm, you need more then just one stack of might to make it worthwhile, but Hidden Assassin, Power of Inertia, Sigil of Strength, Runes of Strength and you are looking at 12-18 stacks in combat. And there are yet other options, Thrill of the Crime, Bountiful Theft (steal from target), Signets of Power and Venomous Strength, Sigil of Battle. We are not without options to generate might, but if you do not generate a decent amount of might stacks already, Runes of Strength are not the best choice, especially given their price.

I don’t personally think the “problem” (if people find it a problem) is the number of skimpy vs non-skimpy armour sets. Is the number of people that choose them.

Do that number of guys really get turned on by looking at a semi-naked chick in a video game? =S

With medium armour on females, I think most people just go with ‘not a trench coat’, as those are sort of boring to look at. There’s also generally a level of dissatisfaction with medium armour in this game. IMO, The very best looking sets are heavily restricted (Heritage and Norn T3)

This, pretty much.

And it’s not just boring, most of them are quite horrible to look at when your character is moving, they look so stiff, as if your character is wearing a cardboard cone strapped to the waste. The Commanders Jacket (the story reward) flows decently but it gets boring after a while, and the sleeves look kinda sloppy, not something I always want to look at, but decent enough to use. The Krytan set would be ok, except it makes my character look rather … voluminous at the hips. I might try it anyway, of I can spare the gems. Then, the GW1 reward armor looks quite nice from the front, but from the back it’s like I am looking at a butler rather. When I want to play Tomb Raider I don’t expect to look at Winston’s behind either. So many sets look decent from the front but fail from the back – and that is what I am looking at most of the time.

There seem to be very few choices for climate appropriate medium armor. Kryta is subtropical and I’m running around in a trench coat. Since the protection is magical anyway, how about a true battle bikini for the females, and for males, magical baggies and a surfboard… and slaps for footwear.

Chainmail bikini’s! Lisa where are you?

Ascended gear dilemma

frans.8092

Stat increase is about 5%, but often overlooked is the ~5% increase in armor and weapon-damage of Ascended armor and weapons.

Its mostly not even 1% in stats if you look at your total stats and not only compare it to exotic.

For example, a character with main-stat STR has normally around 2000 STR, a full set of ascended armor gives +15 (? or maybe 17) more STR, so thats not even 1%

Per piece? Ascended major is 1087, ascended exotic 1003. The difference is 84, or 4% if you use a 2000 total power.

Leveling Leatherworking from 400-500 didn’t cost me much, as I had, and have, a lot of materials. The Ascended gear itself looks like a lot more mats to collect. And then there’s the timelocks on the ascended materials

Still collecting ori for huntsman, used to much on trinkets, back when they were kewl.

Nameplates should be obscured when the player is behind an object. It is difficult to “surprise” another player since the nameplate almost always shows through or around even large structures.

This I agree with, though it should use a general hitbox – which should be the same for all races – to determine if someone can see the tag. Sneaking without stealth has it’s charms I think.

Depends on how much might you build, as they multiply that by 1.5. For Wvw Hoelbrak might be an alternative, -20% condition duration could be a good trade.

Every stack of might adds 1.5% damage. Scholar add 10% when health > 90%, Strength adds 7%. The Ferocity on Scholar would add another 3% damage, so if Strength runes add 4 stacks, which they will when you generate 8 without them, they’d match.

1) DPS meters and inspect commands will not answer the underlying question when inviting someone to your group, which is, I assume, something like “will this player fit in our group” and / or “will this player perform to my expectations”. No tool that we can think of could reliably answer that question.

2) people, quite understandable, do not like to be judged on such simplified criteria

3) people will adjust their behavior to optimize their results against the test-criteria, they will stop sharing boons, they will hesitate to resurrect downed players, they will do whatever it takes to improve their results on the DPS meter.

Strength runes or Asc. Armor/Weapons?

Might boosts condition damage also, but Runes of the Noble would suit conditions better. A +45% duration boils down to +45% might stacks, or going from 8 to 12 stacks. The more might you generate, the more you benefit from Runes of strength.

Fury itself adds 10-15% to your damage (similar to about 6-8 might stacks), but you’d have to estimate how much effect the runes have on your total fury uptime.

Edit: You don’t have enough might in your build to make Runes of Strength even remotely useful, let alone for that price.

(edited by frans.8092)

Any new builds with new crit strikes trait?

in Thief

Posted by: frans.8092

frans.8092

Here is why not:
E. g. You have 70% critchance with fury: so 7 of 10 hits will crit, and you only get health on the crits. All in all you heal yourself for 3,5 % of your damage.

Well, crits deal more damage on average, so with a 70% crit chance more then 70% of total damage would be from critical hits. Still it’s less then 100% so you’ll see less then 5% of your total damage as healing.

The rest of the argument stands, it’s a poor trait, especially as a grandmaster major with stronger traits competing with it. It might be able to compete if it was increased to 7% and turned into a lifesteal. Or if it swapped places with Side Strikes, which would then have to be buffed to (at least) a +10% crit chance.

But if you take executioner you deal 20% more damage, while your enemy is under 50% health. That is a damage increase of 10%.

So what would you take:

3,5% longer till you die or do 10% more damage (the faster your opponent dies, the less damage he can do to you)

Also “when hit” rune effects are terrible. Too much gameplay is passively done with no thought, and many of those effects are have terrible duration settings (perma might, but ~22% uptime on regen from dwayna as if regen is that strong).

I have a Cleric mesmer that uses Runes of Dwayna with Phantasmal Healing and Signet of the Ether. Since I’ve set that up, I’ve only used the active part of signet to recharge skills. I’ve never needed it to heal. This is even against the Champion Risen Baron in front of the Gallow’s Hang skill point. It took me forever to beat her but she just couldn’t outdamage my passives.

Under the right circumstances, regeneration is insane.

I don’t see how that would work, Crossplay, the #4 has a 45 second cooldown and the #6 only triggers when activating your healing skill which, as you stated, you don’t need to do often.

Hoelbrak is pretty close to Strength, but you have not enough might in your build anyway so neither Hoelbrak nor Strength are an option, imo.

Orbs are history, they used to give a nice amount of critical damage but they got hit very hard with the change to ferocity. There are many nice runes, you have many boons in your build so I’d suggest you look at runes that enhance boons, Rune of Rage, for instance, only 30s, and fury adds about 15% of damage (similar to 10 stacks of might) on a power/crit type of build.

Yes ascended is best in slot, but the difference between a full set of exotic and a full set of ascended is often less than a single socket jewel.

Incorrect. I think you have the wron numbers on the stats on equipment. A jewel sets for 55 attribute points (25+15+15). A full ascended set has 248 more stat point, 2647 (including Wvw infusions) vs 2399 for exotic, or aprox 10%. It also has 50 more damage (5%) and 50 more armor (5%).

You don’t need it to play 95% of the content in the game.

You can do most of the game in rare’s. But you do need best-in-slot for the more demanding formats, unless you enjoy getting downed/stomped more. Unfortunately the part where you can get along with rare quality items is also the part that has the shortest live-span, about the length of the personal story plus some exploration. While this may be a large part in area ‘surface’, it is also a relatively small part in playing time, at least for some.

in Profession Balance

Maybe runes in general should never be “overspecializing”?

That is, runes giving offensive stats – like Power – require getting hit to proc effects, and their setbonuses are of a defensive ~ semi-defensive nature. On the flipside, runes with defensive stats or support stats have offensive setbonuses?

I always thought that was odd.

I feel like for examples:

Strength 4/6 = might when you strike
Rage 4/6 = when you strike
Ogre 4/6 = summon rock dog when you strike.
Air 6/6 = lightning strike when you strike

Defense

Earth= prot when struck
Water = chance to remove condition when struck

The defense makes sense but when struck might or fury always seemed odd. I think a simple change like that would be much better and open up more variety. I was always a fan of how perplexity’s 4/6 was a bit more controllable and that is how direct damage runes procs should be. If I can get Air’s lightning strike on my hit it is better then getting hit to proc it.

Well, runes sit on armor and they proc when you get hit, sigils sit in weapons and proc when the weapon hits, or crits. That makes sense to me.

Shadow Trap also gives stealth (5 seconds) when you activate Shadow Pursuit, which also breaks stun and gives fury and 10(!) stacks of might. It might double as stunbreaker (replacing shadowstep) but you’d need good timing on when to deploy it as it’s only in a 10 second window after being triggered that you can either use Shadow Pursuit or Destroy Shadow Trap. If you don’t like loosing Shadowstep it might replace Blinding Powder.

In-game voice comms

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: frans.8092

frans.8092

We currently have no plans to implement an in-game voice communication client. There are plenty of viable third-party options available, such as Ventrilo, Teamspeak and Mumble.

That might be fine for WvW and thank you for taking the time to respond, Mark. But, like others have eluded, not really a viable comm option for PvP (hotjoin) or PvE.

It would be a better use of everyone’s time and efforts if Anet invented a way to seamlessly integrate 3rd party voip in to the game. If there was a way to copy/paste a link into chat which, when clicked, automatically logs you in to TS3 and in to the server of the person who linked it. Or have an option when you right click a player —> join voip, and have it log you in to their associated voip client/server. There would be an option in game settings to specify if you use TS3, vent, or Mumble, and what the URL of your server is.

That would be a good start, GW2 doesn’t necessarily need it’s own voip, it needs to better integrate existing voip into it’s grouping. If GW2 could somehow act as a kind of ‘connection broker’ or a mediator to set up voip for teams, that would really help smoothing things up.

… Overall, its just easier to be in a guild with mumble. More support for Mumble would be nice though. …

I am in a guild with TS3, that is not the issue, what is is connecting to a voip service for ad-hoc events, be it Wvw or Tequatl. It would be nice if you could right-click a pc you’ve just capped a keep with and join their channel on TS3 or mumble, just as you join a party, or they invite you to their party/channel.
