Running the net turret is pretty hilarious when run in combination with the rifle. 3 nets on command, and a 4th if you include the elite, you can pretty much keep someone perma CC’ed and just shoot them down.

It all depends on whom you ask as to whether they suck or not. As for leveling, you can’t go wrong with a full zerk set of armor, just focus on power and precision, I can’t live without speed so when leveling the first thing I would get is the speed ability when swapping kits. Then I would probably aim at getting the reduced rifle cool down ability in firearms, and then incendiary powder, so with every shot you are basically applying bleeding from the 5 point trait in firearms, and burning damage to kill the mobs faster.

Just my two cents.

I fought a guardian earlier who when he saw me and I asked him if he wanted to fight, he laughed and said, “An Engi? With a FT? Lol, you sure? Okay…”

I proceeded to drop him to the ground in 15 seconds and the only heal I used was to jump my might up to 25.

He was shocked.

I don’t like the idea of relying on infused precision for my speed, and precise sights is meh, I don’t run a build great at stacking vulnerability to begin with, and I don’t have anything to assist in building it up quickly, so I don’t see the point in trying to do that when what I can do to increase my damage is build up might. Running around with 2k condition damage is filthy. Drop a poison shot on them, blowtorch, throw a confusion out, flip over to FT, drop the #2, #3, throw down napalm, they then have 2 choices,
1) run away, upon which I pull out my pistols and unload on them, they are not getting away from me due to my perma swiftness.
2) charge right into me and my napalm, and possible elite dump stun on them thereby killing them.

Just my thought process on the build, it is my personal play style though, and of course it may not work for everyone.

Galandor, an FT Engineer can sustain burns on a target with Incendiary Powder. The reason nakoda says it always helps is because Flame Jet gets a flat 10% buff in damage so long as the target is burning.

+10% damage to your Flame Jet is worth a lot more than a couple more stacks of Might

Unfortunately, there is still nothing I can give up to gain it, giving up speed is not a question, and HGH is the center of the build. Were not talking about a couple of stacks of might with that, were talking about an extra 12-15 stacks I can sustain, to hold me at 25. Also the might doesn’t only effect the damage % of the Flame Jet, it works with my pistol conditions as well, improving my bleed/poison/blowtorch damage % as well. I would rather take a solid 7-8% damage increase across the board than a 10% increase on 1 ability, and also sacrifice my speed in the process.

will edit this post when I get home tonight:

highlights:
- don’t be afraid to stay in FT. It is just as beneficial to keep the kit equipped and swap out to other skills as it is to stow the kit and swap in to it. juggernaut is your friend.
- instead of might dura runes, try water and monk runes TP benefit all your boons.
- HGH is not always the best trait for FT, but Incendiary Powder always helps.

more to ce after work (late tonight) when I am at pc and not on mobile.

I don’t wanna be the smartkitten, but technically incendiary ammo is only effective 16.2% of the time with this build

49% crit rate, essentially 1 out of 2 shots are crit shots, and a 33% chance on crit shots to apply fire, therefore, 16 shots out of 100 apply fire.

Hardly always effective

Just sayin.

I might look into the Water/Monk runes though, those might be worth a look O.o

That’s about as might-stacky as you can get for a FT build, so if that’s your aim, it’s good. A few things to consider:

1) Only one more step into the Tools tree gives you back your toolbelt moves at 25%… not as big of a deal with your elixer set up but if you ever swap Elixir S for Elixir R, warrants consideration. I’ve double rezzed in my tPvP fights his way to take out defenders.

2) 10 points in Explosives for the 33% burn to add to the burns you’ll already be providing with FT kit.

3) This build really works better with Grenade Kit. While FT benefits from might, the results on a damage base dont match with GK, and so typically, FT builds work better with some ways to stack might intertwined, but not as the focus of the build (not for sPvP anway).

4) Juggernaut doesn’t always benefit you, since it’s usually a bad idea to stay in FT kit for too long, and you’re already stacking lots of might with everything else. You will honestly spend more of your time out of that kit relying on your pistols, this for me is the main weak point of the build. It does help you get a quick 6 stack headstart on your way to the node I suppose.

5) Not sure it’s necessary to use only might duration runes. Haven’t tested that one enough to say but it seems like a bad idea with FT compared to GK.

Other than that overtly critical assessment, yes, that’s the basic FT might stack build.

Thanks for the input.

I use the might duration runes for the reason that you mentioned, I am not always in my FT kit, and the duration runes allow me to stay in pistol mode longer before switching back. I can carry around 25 stacks of might no problem usually. I wish I had the points to give me the 33% fire chance with incendiary ammo, but I simply don’t. I refuse to play an Engi without speed, and HGH/Condition clears are a must IMO. Juggernaut is great and I won’t give that up either, so I have to drop stuff somewhere. Honestly I have not noticed much of a drop though in burning. I use the toolbelt skill off my FT religously for the added burning when I am shooting and it seems to work well. I have been playing around with it in hotjoins and I “smoked” an Engi/Ele duo earlier lol. It is quite fun. I essentially just took the HGH condi nades build and made it the HGH condi FT build.

I’ve been running HGH with rabid, battle and corruption sigils. THe variations I run are either undead runes with enhanced performance OR 2 lyssa 2 fire 2 hoelbrak with short fuse.

I run undead most of the time, it’s especially good against boon hate classes. I prefer short fuse, but my god does undead hit incredibly kittening hate with 25 stacks of corruption. I run short fuse against condi cleanse classes like multiple guards and eles. It’s just better for sustain. It’s also better for 1v1s against non-pet classes because of how lyssa works with incendiary powder.

Ostrich Eggs I have a question regarding your build.

I was looking at it and am wondering exactly how you are getting the extra burn. Currently your running 30% duration from your explosives line, and the 10% comes from the Lyssa runes, that leaves you with 40% duration bringing incendiary powder up to 2.8 seconds, not enough for the 3rd tick. I was wondering what else you were running to bring it up to the hit the 3rd tick.

If you have 40% on condition duration, that turns a 2 second burn into a 2.8 second burn, but then it rounds down to 2, not up to 3, so you need 50% duration to have it reach 3 seconds, correct?

Was just thinking about things that could make our lives a little easier. Say you are a p/p hgh condi engi, you shoot off your pistol shots, then you switch over to your nades and fire off your nades. Wouldn’t it be nice for them to somehow incorporate a way to show you the cool down timers on your pistol so you know when to switch back to fire off your pistol shots again?

Just a thought.

HGH Power Build vs. SD Burst Build

in Engineer

Posted by: galandor.1059

galandor.1059

I am trying to decide between these two builds on which to run while in sPVP/WvW.

Builds are as follows.

Thanks to Ostrich Eggs, this is the

HGH Power Build,

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlspSXHxSfF17IyoCdmoHPGlNZfewWtFEC;TkAg0CnoCykjIHrOugk6MEB

It uses the rifle, and grenades, from the limited run time I have with it, I feel it has more consistent damage overall than the SD build, but lacks the true massive burst and is much more of a read and react type build. No consistent combo’s you can use, you just sort of run in and start shooting, and go from there. Has more defense than the SD build with the inclusion of elixir S, grenade #4 when being chased, the RNG stealth off elixir S, which if obtained, is wonderful, and condition clears are not a problem with this build either.

This is my own personal SD burst build

http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=VV70;2sPFn0l6gSFx0;9;49T;0T4;0589;4157I;5sV2DsV2D5Bx

With the upgrades to the surprise shot with the rifle turret I included it for it’s burst potential. The build overall is very burst oriented, and requires timing and opportunity like any burst build. It can be quite devastating if landed and usually will kill most classes, especially glass cannons, their rarely if ever make it to the end sequence of the burst. Generally I burst in the following order,

Analyze/Throw Wrench/Surprise Shot/Drop Rifle Turret/Overcharge Rifle Turret/Magnet/Prybar/Rifle3/Rifle4/Netshot/Jumpshot/Rifle3(If up)

The builds defense leaves much to be desired. I included the blind shot trait with my rifle to mitigate as much damage as possible, as I did not feel in the setting I run this in, mainly sPVP, that 100 range on my rifle would be greater than my opponent blinded half the time. The build’s condition clear is limited to the #4 on the medkit, and the only true damage mitigation it has is the shield in the tool kit. It does have 1 stun break though with the goggles. Essentially it is a kill or be killed type of build.

That being said, I have run both builds, and both have their positives and negatives, and I can’t make up my mind as to which I should run. That is why I am asking the Engi community for it’s opinion.

O.o

Anywya I was bored this week end and tried a 3 turret static discharge build.

Not that bad, actually better then expected.

But once your turret are on cooldown, you are pretty much death.

I didn’t have any kits except med kit. I didn’t have any CC breaker. I had one condition removal.

I felt really naked.

Rifle Turret, Utility Goggles & Toolkit, perhaps? You’ll get 3 ranged static discharge procs, and the toolkit so you can magnet -> pry bar -> overcharge shot -> unload discharge. Not to mention the block for added survivability.

I’m not saying static discharge builds are competitive, they’re really not. But if you’re tenacious enough you might find them close to viable. The naked feeling won’t really go away, though

I disagree, they are quite viable if the build is appropriate. You can get a massive burst if you hit your chain correctly with anaylyze/magnet/prybar/rifle #4/netshot/throw wrench/jumpshot/rifle#3, if you don’t have your turret up you can have more damage with the surprise shot, if you do, it is shooting it the entire time, either way, more damage.

I think in a roundabout way we agreed with each other.

I just hit 80 with my first character: an engineer. Since I’m new to the game, I’m not qualified to comment on anything except playing an engineer as a first character. I figured I would share my experience in the hope that it helps you along.

Unlike the posters above, I hardly ever dodge. In fact, I do the opposite. I run into the middle of every group. This is because I play my engineer (PvE, I haven’t PvP’ed yet) with the bomb kit. I highly recommend this style of play for the beginner.

Bombs hit for a ton of damage and the conditions associated with them (bleed, confusion, and blindness) are killers. Usually, I start with a blindness bomb. This is why I don’t dodge. Many — if not most — PvE mobs use their signature attack on their first attack. If you get the blindness down first, they miss. Throw up confusion next, then bleed. After that, the mobs start to melt. You do basically the same damage to each mob in range so you can tear huge crowds apart. I never had survivability issues really. If you get in a tight spot, drop the supply crate and the tide will turn quickly.

I don’t see much mention about the bomb kit on these boards and I’m not sure why. Perhaps it is just that the bomb kit makes the engineer into a melee character, basically. Or there might be some significant drawbacks to bombs that I just don’t know about yet. Most people I spoke with recommended grenades but I found the targeting requirements to be a bit of a pain. I am unimpressed with the FT damage (although I love the animation) and almost always take more damage with the FT in hand than with the bomb kit.

Hope that perspective is helpful.

Anyway, I hope that helps. Enjoy!

Thank you for your input. I don’t mean to be rude whatsoever, I do appreciate your thoughts, however I was more referring to the PVP aspect of the game. Running into the fray in PVP and simply dropping bombs will get you 2 shot most of the time, but alas, soon when you embark on your own adventures, you shall experience the fun of this class

Right now I suck at dodging lol

The #1 tip for mastering the Eng: Learn to dodge!
The trick is to watch the enemy’s animation for their big attack(s) and then dodge out of the way before it hits. After a while you’ll develop the knack of spotting the dangerous animations and dodging clear of their effects – when you do it will make the biggest difference to the amount of damage you take.

Dodge is the major damage reduction mechanic in GW2, its superior to literally everything else – It can’t hurt you if it doesn’t hit you.

See I have no idea what the major animations look like lol

So my first toon I decided to roll and play is my Engi. My thoughts so far are mostly positive with the game, and somewhat mixed with the class. I love the class concept, but I can’t help but feel that the class design has left it lacking. A Jack of All Trades, but a master of none, comes to mind with the Engi. I have yet to find a build that I can effectively learn the class on. 100 nades is nice, but incredibly difficult to play well, and almost every condition build I have found is group oriented, and while I play with my guild in tourney’s quite a bit, I want something that I can effectively solo on as well and improve my skills in the game.

As for the game, I think the PvE aspect of the game is wonderful, the tPvP aspect is awesome as well, but the WvW of the game to me is meh at best, hopefully much of this will be helped with the upcoming culling patch, and hopefully they will add incentives to actually go out and WvW, because right now, I have none.

My main frustrations atm come with what feels like some serious class balance issues. Mesmers and Thiefs come to mind specifically, but I was speaking to my guildies, and when watching the SOTG March video, my thoughts were put into words by the Mesmer Xeph, in that he feels Thiefs, and Mesmers are the main detractors in making new players leave PvP. That being said, I am only 3 1/2 weeks into the game, and I can already tell my reactions to Mesmers, and being able to follow the real one around are improving, and my win/loss ratio against Thiefs is improving as well. Hopefully my thoughts on the Engi class will improve before I hit ultimate rage mode and shelf the class all together. My guildy warned me that Engi was probably not the best class to learn the game on :P
