Can swap out epidemic for the rez sig if you want, and the 30% on crit chill is movable as well, I just chose that over the bleed because I already have plenty of bleeding.

The point of the build is maximum sustain, to hold a point for as long as possible to allow my teammates to roll in for support etc.,

Got some inspiration for the build from a previous poster, can’t remember his/her name, but TY.

My biggest question to the build is which stun breaker I want to use, but that will take time and experimentation to decide. Stomp is looking very nice atm, but I elected balanced stance for the stab and swift.

I know, they suck, blah blah, they are not any good, your an idiot for trying anything other than 100 blades/killshot.

Now that all the whining is out of the way, I am looking for some serious input into what abilities are must haves for a bunker warrior. I have seen it work well, and I am curious as to what abilities are a must for the class.

Any help would be wonderful to help me start out and learn about the defensive aspects of the class so that I can begin contributing to the class in the future

I consider disengage, negation, mitigation, and stunbreaker all in the same category of damage mitigation, so I agree with all of that. I think our conditions are perfectly fine, idk why that would be an issue. I don’t know much about Axe yet, can’t comment on it.

Weak Necromancers?

I keep hearing people complain about the current state of the Necromancer.

I am curious as to what they think is wrong with the class in general. I have been playing the class for 3 weeks, and have a lot to learn. My main is an Engi, so learning the class was fairly simple. Honestly the only issue I see with the class is damage mitigation. I have no problem with the thought process of keeping the Necro in battle, but the ability to mitigate damage is the major issue with the class I am seeing, and the reason why Engineers are valued over Necro’s in sPVP, tPVP, WvW, and PvE. Necro’s almost have to be babysat whereas an Engi can move around and has many tools in their arsenal to mitigate damage with. As for damage, I see 0 issues with that on the Necromancer, I feel they do plenty of damage, especially if traited for power bursting with a Zerker’s amulet, that can be downright hilarious.

It’s like going from playing chess your whole life to playing checkers when you switch from either an Engi or Necro to another class. I played a Ranger and almost fell asleep at how easy it was to kill everything. Ele seems like it might be my cup of tea b/c they seem to be quite difficult to play well.

I disagree entirely, premades vs. pugs is a huge issue. Premades already have an advantage of being coordinated, and more than likely in some time of voice chat. If this isn’t a huge advantage against a group of randoms with no communication, then you really need to play more tPVP in the solo que so you understand the frustration of solo que players. I just got out of a match where I got double whammied, not only with players significantly lower than me, I am 31, there was a 4, 9, and 11, but we also went against a full guild premade and got smashed 500 to 70.

If DS3 and 2 are not in your rotation constantly then that is probably why you are failing at the class, just saying. They are extremely important. The best defense is a good offense. They can’t put pressure on you if you have them running for the hills. My rotation is very simple. Start in staff, cast my blood is power for 10 stacks of quick might, staff 2, 3, drop fear, drop 2 again, charge pet, DS, 3, 2, a few 1’s while fury is up, switch to scepter/dagger, drop 2, 5, a few 1’s, game over. If they are still alive, after throwing as many 1’s as I can, I switch back to my staff and do it all over again, usually fear and pet charge are not quite up yet, but that doesn’t stop me, drop my 2, 3, sometimes a 4, switch to DS, 3, 2, 4, 1, scepter, 2, 5, 111111111, you get the point.

I honestly don’t feel the Necro needs that many changes. They are game changers as is on points if played right, they can change the entire outcome of a team fight with 1 ability, and if left free casting can decimate enemies.

If they added Hammer, they should put a limitation on it, having Hammer, Pistol/Pistol, AND a kit would be overkill IMO. There needs to be a limit. Like you can run your Pistol/Pistol and a Hammer, with no kits, or run your 1 weapon set, with kits.

IDK maybe it is just how familiar with Engi’s I am and know their animations really well and their major weaknesses, and what kills them, but Engi’s are one of the classes I have struggled the least with so far in my brief time with the Necro.

Since my main is an Engi, I almost spit up my drink when I read this.

Elixir R is good yeah, but by no means is it great or OP, If you want OP look at the necro rez signet, rez up to 3 guys instantly? From range? Looooooooooooool. Elixir R is is on a huge CD, very risky to throw down for a self rez because if you don’t end up going down, you just wasted it for nothing, and it’s not even a guaranteed rez, it just helps you regen up faster. You have no idea how many times I have thrown this down to no avail. Automated response Engi’s are few and far between, because in the Engi community HGH is viewed as the bread and butter so almost no one even considers this amazing ability and it’s potential at completely shutting down pure condition builds. Example: On my bunker engi I was holding a point against and HGH engi, and 2 necro’s that were pure condition, they dropped me to 25% health in about 15 or 20 seconds, my auto kicked in, and my health stayed steady for around 2 minutes before my team came in and wiped them. Does this mean the ability is op? No, it means that my build was a perfect counter to their build, and even given this, they should have killed me easily. All they had to do was think instead of mash their conditions over and over again. The engi should have gone pure grenades but he only popped in to throw his 2 and 4, then back to pistols he went, so I just saved dodges for those, the necro’s were idiots, just mashing scepter skills and staff skills, so I paid them 0 attention because my health didn’t even flinch on their 100 points here or there considering I have perma regen greater than that, they should have coordinated their attacks by going into DS and 1 spamming me into the ground, with only 5k health, they could have taken me out fairly easily, as good players who see my health not dropping when I hit this point recognize.

I will explain the reasons behind my selections.

First and foremost I wanted to use might to my advantage, and get as many stacks as possible to increase my overall damage, on a routine basis I am hitting 25 stacks with the support of my teammates and holding for quite some time. I also run 2 battle sigils for this reason, and swap between my weapons almost constantly, generally throwing out my 2 and 3, and then shooting into deathshroud for a 2, and a few #1’s which can crit for around 2.2-2.5k, then jump to scepter, throw out my 2, 5, and then barrage with 1’s, until I feel I need to switch to my staff again, and go through my rotation again.

I choose the bleed duration and terror for obvious reasons, I want my bleeds to last as long as possible, and terror with 25 stacks of might is just lol. I run the unblockable marks because without it, staff sucks, and I choose to run the staff CD reduction over the corruption because I feel the reduction on fear and the #3 outweighs the need for might 6 seconds faster. I have rarely if ever needed corruption off the CD, because it is so situation based, sometimes it comes up and I have it sitting there for 20-30 seconds before I find an opportune time to use it, so having it 8 seconds faster is just meh. I chose 3, 9, and 10 in the final line b/c I switch so much into DS that the reduced CD is nice, and having greater LF generation off my marks is awesome. The fear increase is self explanatory.

As for the sigils, battle sigils for the extra might on swap, and I chose bleed duration to increase my bleed, but I have not tested to see if it is really worth it to keep it, or if maybe I should go with something else. The runes are for might duration increase, and condition duration.

A Non-HGH Build?

Am I the only one who doesn’t like HGH builds? I feel naked without at least 2 kits, making them pretty awful for me to use every time I try. I always end up in some situation where the extra kit could have saved me or allowed me to pull off something awesome. For example, yesterday I was soloing a supply camp and ended up getting jumped. I was able to elixir gun blast myself away, gear shield block, run up a hill…drop smoke bomb, detonate my shield for stealth, then run directly through the 10 people chasing me and into the water. Wish I recorded it

I also feel like not running healing turret, especially in team WvW, is really a no go for me…it brings way too much to team fights.

To directly answer, yes there are definitely non-HGH viable builds. Whoever said Engi are pigeon holed currently is silly – we probably have more viable build diversity than most other professions.

I haven’t run HGH in ages. I find it very boring and repetitive.

There are many builds of which you can run and be effective. There is 1 build you can run and be OP.

The first question you need to ask when looking for a build is what do you want to do? There are many different styles of game play. Do you want sustained damage? Do you want spike damage? Do you want to bunker? Once you figure this out, then you need to figure out what kits(if any), you are best with. There is no one way to be great at the Engineer class, and that is the beauty of it.

If anything, I am seriously thinking of dropping the metal turret plating, honestly it hardly seems to do anything. The turrets still if focused on drop instantly, the best defense for them is strategically placing them where the player would have to go out of their way to get them, unless of course, they have range, in which I notice them going for the turret and proceed to ping pong them around with my shield, big ole bomb, and if needed, heal turret explosion.

1) Engi’s don’t have crappy traits
2) Turning turrets into a kit would be beyond OP. Every Engi would run the kit, drop a net, rocket, rifle, thumper, and fire turret, then pop into their grenades, and pistols, and HGH bomb someone to death, not to mention preventing anyone from getting near you for fear of the OC nightmare that would ensue assuming you wanted to actually attack the point.
3) Gadgets do need some rework, I will give you this.
4) Supply crate is legit, get rid of the rampaging brute portion of the potion, and just put in the tornado, if I had this ability, I would drop my supply crate in a heart beat for it on my bunker.
5) The random portion is annoying yes, but learn to not rely on it.

I just started testing it today,

The main problem with the build as you stated is the condition removal, but honestly, other than the occasional HGH Engi, I rarely if ever have problems with heavy conditions. I use other variations of this build and rarely have issues with conditions due to having huge health and being able to eat a lot of them. The problem comes when you are fighting multiple conditions and they chain CC you with snares etc., it can be your doom, but a perfect bunker build I have yet to find. Even Teldo’s bunker build is severely weak to conditions. I will post my base build that I use to build from to give you an idea of what I normally run.

As for WvW, I am not sure how viable this would be, I can’t see if being very viable due to so much open space and people can just run away from your area, point defending is all I really see this being viable for.

I play defensive builds as well, but I play bunkers very aggressively. I attack the opponent forcing them into defense which the majority of the time if they are attacking me, is not their strong suit, since my build’s defense is for the large majority, built into the build and I don’t really have to activate it, I can focus on applying pressure with my bombs, and poison/confusion shots, and controlling the point with knockbacks etc., Right now I am testing a new build, it seems to work okay, not sure if it is better than my previous build though.
