for instance my power is 1899, armor 1896
so
1899 power * 981 * 2.8 / 1896 my_armor(?) = 2751 damage for fire grab vs burning, while my tooltip indicates 1950 vs burning.

so may be armor is some other, hypothetical target armor game average number? or tooltip is wrong?

great, thx, I tracked all numbers/calculation. bloodlust and might 25 stack I imagine are “better then ideal” hypotheticals, fine.

where did you get 2.8 damage coefficient?

speaking of, against what sort of enemy armor is tooltip damage calculated? are tooltips trustworthy?

Rank has no impact on any of your combat abilities.

Upper range for Fire grab in sPvP is around 18k under better than ideal conditions.

rank scaling was a joke, but how does it get that much.

i was probably burning. and it critted? but that’s just 4k. how many boons get you that much damage? my weakness?

Lets look at the first person to get to 80. Title, finisher, and armor/weapons nobody else has.

Honestly which one would be rather have? If tpvp and leaderboards had better rewards I’d think everyone would be happy.

if you mean to bring gear progression and worse yet, make it rating dependent – that would be the end of “skills only” gw2 pvp, one of the games brightest spots imo.

as for gimmicky rewards (titles, “i turned the game” badge, purple armor, etc) – i dont care. whoever cares, i wish devs would grant those, just to hear this whining over.

i dont care about outcome in hotjoins and appreciate immediate queue time. i’d rather not sacrifice queue for balancing. i play to develop and demo skills to win, and i know i have them (or not) regardless of final scoreboard.

leaderboard is measure of played skill

rank is a measure of played volume

why would you factor skill in rank? what’s the point of having a second copy of leaderboard. both stats are of some interest and its helpful that both are available.

having rank stat available for prolonged play from the very start is much more fun then what other mmo’s are doing, raising cap each time they need to recycle the game and stimulate tired excitement. when reaching that original milestone, it will feel like something. and not that it’s depriving anything before you reach it, its just a measure, and a long one, as measure should be.

god give endurance to dev team. heaven’s a witness, they have a tough crowd to satisfy.

i know this wasn’t really directed at me, but the issue is not that a class can heal and dps at the same time. it’s not about heal, and it’s not about dps. it’s about reliance on your teammates for something.

say anything you’d rely on teammate in trinity teamplay model and ill reply: but you could and in fact should do the same with hybrid teamplay, its just you dont have to do this all the time.

Why are you bringing up WoW? No one is talking about that game. Why do you feel the need to attack a position that we never represented? Did you even play GW1?

there has been multiple postings in this thread that “independent classes undermine teamplay”.

im saying:

whats more interesting?

purist classes team-play:
player1: dps, dps, dps, dps….
player2: heal, heal, heal….

VS

hybrid classes teamplay:
player1: dps, heal self, dps, heal alli, dps, dps…
player2: as diverse as player1

hybrid class and independence doesnt mean rstricting teamplay, but making it (harder) and interesting

@lopez: did you read your link? slippery slope is a valid argument exactly for reasons mentioned there.

the way game drives players and then players drive the game, the way corporations (arenanet) momentum works, the way discussion takes place… for many reasons one change invokes next.

Cast Bars? Why would you need this?

So you can dodge that MOA you should have seen the Mesmer cast?

So you can dodge that warrior charge?

you need some enemy awareness for creating space for skilled play, but you also need some UNcertainty to keep it dynamic and unpredictable. no one wants turn based combat, does it? then one gets to keep some moves unpredictable.

I think xp for spvp is a good idea.

its a good idea at first sight, but do you have specifics how this is to be implemented?

for, depending how you do it, you’ll get lvlers starting xp farming and botting pvp. pve ers will complain that pvp lvling is killing open world pve experience, questing and dynamic events, that pvp levelers are getting free lvling ride. pvpers will be unhappy about lvling bots or unskilled level-only teammates.

one can talk more if you have specifics, but it has been said many times that separating pve and pvp games helped make gw1 (havent played myself) a great game, and this makes sense.

Is it just me or is there actually no real teamplay?
i mean.. there are rarely 5v5 fights. Most times it’s 1v1 2v2 3v3 and the only thing that you have to coordinate is your selected target and bursts, rez and finish.
Guild Wars 1 pvp was so different. Even in randomgroups you tried to help each other survive or powerblock, diversion the monk to give your teammates a chance to burst.. in gw2 theres nothing like this 0o
Actually the most important thing is to do damage.. things like chill are a bad joke…
The mesmer: Mass invisbility and Illusions with random interrupts does not need any skill in my opinion. A well played domination mesmer in gw1 was such fun and usefull in teamfights..
kitten i think when it comes to pvp gw1 is still sooooo much better than gw2..
How do you think could arenanet change this? They wanted an esport game. I don’t think gw2 will ever be one unless they change some points drastically
It’s more fun to watch old wc3 replays than watching teamfights in gw2.

imo complain about lack of teamplay is an indication that one got stuck at recognizing hybrid nature of gw2 professions for individual gameplay, but fall short of skills for taking advantage of it for teamplay.

each time teammate went down and you didnt teamplay (peel, heal) you missed on game. hybrid does mean that you can be everything, but not at all that you have to be alone. a more complex game with hybrid is that you play multiple roles by situation, you dps when enemy’s low, you heal when alli’s low, and you make a hard choice when both, things like this. unlike holy trinity, where you are stuck in a single mode, you have to switch and adjust. this is sure harder, but its opposite of boring.

as of more cc, that was my immediate impression too, but thats wrong. what else would you have, wow rugue style chain cc? when whole combat degrades to rng of who split second hits cc first? every other wow post is about cc killing skill and game. gw2 has many more smaller cc’s and it takes more work, you have to cast them many times, in smart combinations, possibly swapping with allis, but hey, thats what skilled combat is, as opposed of chain-cc-got-no-chance one shot combat.

just cast bar wont turn game into a spreadsheet, but it is a step in that direction. cast bar, addons, cooldown monitoring, weakauras, frame targeting and yes, if you go down that road, it ends up being a spreadsheet.

milo: our discussion boils down to quantitative but not qualitative argument, there is a tradeoff:
is difficulty of no cast bar awareness worth fun of immersion?

there is no obvious answer to this and would vary by player. my choice at this point would be to stick with immersion, but i understand opposite. if castbars to be implemented, that should be the extent of interface over immersion sacrifice, cause as said many times, no one wants to turn the game in pixels behind spreadsheet.

watch out those who ask for castbars. this is a step towards turning game into interface monitoring and ultimately into spreadsheets.

awareness of enemy actions from monitoring immersive combats rather then interface is an ambitious challenge, but being hard is not a reason to give up on it. i agree thakittens difficult now, but id rather work towards more readable animation. and btw, id rather not have 100%. awareness, not everything is known in real world either. mix of awareness and UNcertainty imo makes the best mixture of combat, which is both skillful, but also dynamic and unpredictable.

mixing pve and pvp games in general is a bad idea. look at wow, they share gear between to and open world fight, and now everyone there is crying because balancing needs of one aspect of the game is ruining the other.

keep gw2 for pvp for sheer fun of doing it and skills . if you want to see big numbers, goodie bags, thats pve. i dont see how you can get two in one without killing it for pvpers. youll have to intro gear progression, restricted territories, sthing other then skill will enter the equation and that will ruin it for pvpers.

IMHO the problem is that it just isn't fun

in my short observation:

if you are in pvp for goodies, gear superiority (which then stimes translates in false superiority of skills), rewards – gw2 is not exactly your game.

if you pvp for main purpose of SKILLS grind and solely this is the only grind you want from game – then gw2 is THE game for you.

Devs know that the game is an aoe and condition spam with a lack of variety, too fast and too chaotic to cast properly.
But what can they do, it’s the core, aoe and condition spam aren’t some minor mistakes, they are gw2 core, u cant get rid of it. Better to develop gw3 and start fresh.

this makes it sound as if there is something inferior about aoe combat.

not at all, in fact aoe makes combat harder for both, caster and target. unlike single target spells, where you blindly mash button and you only need to keep target selected, with aoe positioning adds to complexity. and same about receiving side, another layer added to combat by the need to monitor ground effects and getting out.

the bad rep of aoe comes from a very different context. when numbers only skills irrelevant Zerging, thats all about which side has more players to spam aoes, there aoe is a mean for skills-less play. even before gw2, bad aoe rep established in other games open world zerging.

but in spvp, aoe is step-up to a combat skills.

if s1 needs goodies 4 pvp, fine i don’t care. but don’t touch full immediate access to best pvp gear. thats what put gw2 pvp squarely in “all about skills” box.

whatever rewards – non pvp gear.

ps: i dont care much about esports. dunno why so many ppl are hyped about it. is everyone 24/7 pro players, planning to live off sponsored teams? i hope not, that would leave no place for gamers.

I just hit 80 and I was doing some sPvP, i got to rank 9 rabbit. I was wondering if it were possible to get better gear by leveling up ranks? If not, what is the point of sPvP?

how about witnessing your skills improve and you prevailing against competition?

it was not good, burst in wow, but i’m not going to talk about wow.

it’s just, in gw2, i cant see any “burst phase”. all boons are 3-5 sec and so are all stuns.

one of the key skill in wow pvp was to be aware of enemy cooldowns and know when to cc, that’s where the edge of high skill was.

is this mechanics present in gw2?

ps: still trying to learn animations for spell telegraphs
