What is up with Tactical Strike damage?

in Thief

Just realized the traits First Strike and Lead Attacks might be a factor. That first Cloak and Dagger costs 6 initiative, however with Preparedness I still have more than 6 left so First Stike should still be in effect.

Cloak and Dagger takes .5 seconds so I should still have 9 initiative after an opening with Steal. Tactical Strike is .5 seconds as well I believe, so at most I would an additional 1% more damage with my next attack of Slice. Slice being .5 seconds as well, this opens up the possibility that the next Slash could be with a bonus of 2%. But is this enough to bridge and eclipse the gap so greatly?

I was just experimenting with some thief builds when I noticed something strange, from my limited perspective at least. Going through the combat log I saw that my Tactical Strike was out-damaged every single time by Slice and Slash. The only time it wasnt was when Slice or Slash was a crit and TS was not. Here is an example from my combat log:

Mesmer was hit for 31kittenage by your Steal <- stupid language filter lol
Mesmer was hit for 2008 damage by your Cloak and Dagger
Mesmer was hit for 1498 damage by your Tactical Strike
Mesmer was hit for 1622 damage by your Slice
Mesmer was hit for 1704 damage by your Slash
Mesmer was hit for 1682 damage by your Slash
Mesmer was hit for 2888 damage by your Crippling Strike

Thief was hit for 3083 damage by your Steal
Thief was hit for 1925 damage by your Cloak and Dagger
Thief was hit for 1514 damage by your Tactical Strike
Thief was hit for 1701 damage by your Slice
Thief was hit for 1566 damage by your Slash
Thief was hit for 2811 damage by your Crippling Strike
Thief was hit for 1716 damage by your Slice
Thief was hit for 1613 damage by your Slash

There is a consistent gap of 50-200+ damage between TS and Slice/Slash. Both Slice and Slash should do less base damage and should always do less than TS (assuming both are crits) if I am not mistaken. TS should always be a crit as I have the Hidden Killer trait. At first I thought it was because I was not positioning myself correctly behind the target after the C & D … but it was clear the position was correct because I could see my target get dazed. This was on testing a 10/30/0/0/30 build.

This build minus the gear: http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/thief/?7.0|c.1g.h2.8.1g.h1|5.1g.h1|1g.71b.1g.71b.1g.71b.1g.71b.1g.71b.1g.7j|1p.67.1g.67.1g.67.1i.64.1i.64.1i.67|a3.u36c.0.0.u57c|39.j|57.5c.5h.5f.5u|e

Very odd. Any ideas? I am probably missing something obvious here.

On some level I miss old school MMO mechanics, where everything you owned could be freely traded.

Or freely looted from your corpse?

My personal preference in fantasy adventure games is to build a character with as little restrictions to weapons/armor per class as possible. Generally, the balance issues are handled by certain penalties to non-profficient weapons, off hand attacks, etc.

Of course the combat system is different here, but after thinking about it I can’t come up with any specific reason why all weapons couldnt be available (or unlockable for gems hint hint) for all professions. It might present some weird combinations such as warrior using scepter for CC or something. I couldnt say there wouldnt be some overpowered combos – but cant think of any at this moment. The flexibility would be cool. But I’m dreaming.

Some issues arise with professions that have prof specific skills tho – like mesmer greatsword skills vs warrior greatsword skills. If everyone picking up a greatsword had the same skills available to them, then it could possibly work. Alas, that ship has sailed.

Not sure what this post is getting at but if I was rich, yes I would buy a kitten load of gems and everything else. It would probably ruin the game for me. Or maybe it would be extremely satisfying.

What exactly is "End Game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ghettogenius.9174

People crack me up – playing a RPGMMOs and then somehow they are searching for this elusive “end game”, as if its an attainable noun to be collected. The term itself should be a clue. It’s End Game … the end of the game. End Game is some kitten that a suit made up like market derivatives, to keep players interested and keep the subs coming in. Personally I have found there is much more fun in the journey as opposed to the destination.

Maybe its just me. I come from a D&D background where if a character ever reached max level they were pretty much killed off or retired. There were and are some forays into epic levels or demi-godhood but most often not. Such role playing games were built around the core leveling experience – not what to do once you get there. I just found it very frustrating looking at gaming from this “end game” perspective over the years. Eventually I realized I had much more fun leveling than I did grinding or chasing carrots at max level.

Just my opinion of course. I realize people have varying play styles.

Improving the Elementalist Scepter main-hand

I’m not a big fan of reducing damage to accommodate faster cast times – maybe its just because I have grown accustomed to it. If I want to be faster I’ll use daggers. I use scepter for versatility, support and range. Wouldn’t mind Daggers Tooth to target ground so long as it’s initial target is the current target so I can just double tap – this should appease most players I think. In that sense Scepter needs a field however – perhaps shatterstone or lightning strike.

Those can be tough levels for ele. That was about when I put away the daggers and staff and started going with scepter/dagger instead for the increased range. Arc lightning just got a nice bump too, might be a good time to check it out. As you gain more skills and toughness it should be easier to go back to combat at a closer range – if you choose to. i ended up loving scepter/dagger myself so ended up sticking with it.

Is Crafting Worth it?

in Crafting

Posted by: ghettogenius.9174

Crafting is good for free +xp, making the neccessary items towards a Legendary weapon, and it’s good for making consumable items.

All things considered, you could just buying gear from the BLTC instead of making it yourself and you could skip the Legendary weapons. If that’s your point of view, then I would suggest going into Artificer for their potion buff consumables and Cook for their food buff consumables. Though both of these buffs occupy the same buffing slot (so you can only use one at a time), you’ll have a lot of self-buffing options and you can change things around whenever you want.

Out of curiosity, what potion recipes would you make at lvl 80? I dont see many useful recipes, and the ones that do seem useful require lodestones and bloods, etc. Doesn’t seem worth it to me.

As much as I hate to downplay the dev teams work on this content I just cannot get behind this. I actually feel bad for those with decked out vid cards in SLI and nice surround sound speakers – that have to watch that 8-bit morphed monstrosity and high pitched tinny sounds. Please tell me the audio has been removed from the loading screen now that it’s not April 1st.

Seriously, April 1st is at the top of my list for lame calendar dates. Nothing good comes of this day.

S/D Build for a newbie

Well personally I currently run a 0 5 30 15 20 build. Signet of Restoration, Arcane Wave, Signet of Fire, Cleansing Fire and Glyph of Elementals. Solid toughness and extra condition damage from the earth line, good healing skills, and the arcane line for boon durations and support skills. The extra five points in air are just for a little extra crit chance and damage. Traits are Signet Mastery, Earths Embrace, Written in Stone, Cleansing Wave, Arcane Retribution, and Elemental Attunement.

Side note – Im not really sure if the traits Vigorous Scepter, Windborn Dagger and Arcane Energy are working properly as I am seeing no active benefit from them so Ive been using something else. Anyone else experience this?

Survival is the name of the game and as you cycle quickly through attunements youll keep health and boons up – especially might. Use fire or strength runes for extra might duration.

Could easily drop the five from air and place back into water and go with a more cantrip based build as well (use Cantrip Mastery for this).

This certainly sounds like inflation, however, it could also be that there is incredibly higher demand that is outstripping the supply.

I agree with most of your ideas in your post but this I do not agree with. I have been closely watching several exotics lately and have observed their price go up each and every day. Whats more is that the amount available on the TP goes steadily up as well. It is pretty clear that many of these items are not selling. Not just talking about huge items like Lidless Eye and Jormags Needle but less desireables like Tsunami and various Destroyer Staffs for instance.

For mats and stuff with higher drop rates I think they are more in tune with the market as you described it but for exotics … and particularly weapons I think there is a huge greed factor everyone is trying to hope to exploit.

I personally swaps my naga side keys to numpad and bind F1-F4 to numpad 1-4
so much easier to swap attunements

This. Plus I map Naga keys 6-0 to keyboard 6-0 so basically my left hand does movement (wasd) and attacks while right hand does attunement swapping and skills.

Post here if you GAVE UP on the Clocktower!

Honestly I think the difficulty was just right. Took me about 2hrs overall. Like everyone else I was annoyed at first. Thats just human nature – having your progress blocked causes frustration. However I immediately recognized it for the fun it was worth. Lots of chat, hanging out near the tower, trying to pick your lines up. A true test of not only jumping skill but problem solving (as in which objects to jump to/chests to loot/etc), and patience. Things that are hard just make the accomplishment so much more in the end.

Dont change a thing. You cant expect everyone on Earth to have the same experiences. Im pretty stoked when I have a good menage-a-trois. It wouldnt be nearly as cool if it happened every week you know? Oh you havent experienced a menage-a-trois? Well sorry, but dont try to belittle other peoples accomplishments or worse, prevent them from occurring because you were unable to make it happen yourself.

Absolutely loved the event, especially the Mad Kings clock tower. Kitten awesome! Im pretty casual so I dont often get to complete all seasonal events in MMOs but this one was easily accomplished in only a few hours a night. I would still complain that the event didnt run long enough though (especially access to the MK dungeon). I thought we were getting two full weekends to play it. I feel bad for those who lost power and missed out.

Edit: Now Im really bummed lol – just realized I didnt log in last night to finish up the last of my achievements for the event!

On the subject of feeling 'powerful'

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ghettogenius.9174

I get what the OP is saying and agree. There has always been a slight disconnect in all MMOs I can remember playing concerning the “realism” behind the effects of weaponry. Nowhere is this most evident than in Star Wars MMOs where you could be swinging a lightsaber at a boss for 20 mins or more. The damage the weapons do in game does not match up with the real world. Obviously one good hit from a lightsaber (or even a sword) would likely spell the end of fight for the one being struck. In a game world this is harder to manage and balance, as enemies would seem too weak and like the OP says developers counterbalance this by throwing huge swarms of mobs at the players which may not always make sense in the story.

There are so many variables in computer based combat damage (raw dps, dots, cc, buffs, debuffs) that it just becomes a nightmare to develop a system that endorses true balance and realistic gameplay. I would love a system where there are more misses and blocks than actual hits. This hints at a more defensive combat system – where some sort of defense rating (in conjunction with physics detection) ultimately decides if you are struck by an opponents weapon. Of course missing over and over again doesnt seem very fun either.

However, a mace to my face should have consequences other than a few hit points lost. Standing toe to toe and just trading blows has always left a sour taste in my mouth – its just an old approach to gaming that reminds me of old turn based combat or something – which in some senses was very balanced yet lacking in action when implemented. Throw magic in the mix and things get even more complicated. After all, how do you defend against a fireball with your sword?

Of course many MMO players dont like to hear this but I believe there should be more twitch based elements in action-adventure MMOs. The dodge mechanic is a good example. But also maybe consider a default block. I love how the block in GW2 blocks all damage – as a block should. Timing should matter as it does here, but we are still left with a toe to toe brawl where many direct hits are exchanged. Part of me misses the old D&D d20 system of AC where inherent defenses were actually useful and relevant – of course this always presented its own problems when translated to video game format.

I dont know, it’s just not easily accomplished – the balance. No one wants to be one or two shotted either, which is what a more realistic approach would allow for. Unless you managed it by having much more stout inherent defenses where such a strike was not so easily achieved. When you fully consider the difficulties of achieving such a system then the GW2 game play seems pretty well done IMO.

Oh where oh where is this hardcore hybrid D&D, Star Wars Academy, Guild Wars twitch MMO video game I am looking for?

Your idea of a mage

in Elementalist

Posted by: ghettogenius.9174

ghettogenius.9174

Honestly I feel for the OP and I can relate in many ways too. In past games I have always dabbled with mages – wizards/sorcerors whatever. They are an iconic fantasy role that always been associated with great risk vs reward, slow leveling and tremendous power at endgame in compensation for a fairly weak inherent defenses.

I do feel there is some power lacking in the elementalists spellbook. There’s no big lvl 9 spells that are just money like in D&D for instance. Fantasy mages (yes elementalists are in this category) should strike fear automatically into opponents like they have in past games.

Couldnt kill kitten myself in PvP or WvW with my ele. Do I suck? Maybe. But I can absolutely faceroll PvE content with her. Many people have similar experiences so evidence supports the possibility that something isnt quite right here. Same old MMO dilemma – balancing between PvE and PvP.

I think this game’s recent release has proven that you don’t need a group finder to destroy the social aspect of an mmo. It’s already a solo game disguised as an mmo. If you’re going to have instanced content then you should probably have a group tool.

Be like DDO, which being 100% instanced content it is served flawlessly by a group tool which gives the leader full control over group composition, not some kitten auto queue. Theres plenty of time to be social as the group forms and it’s entirely optional.

I have to agree here. Its pretty silly having a “teleport” skill that cant traverse small gaps. I was stuck on a ledge in Gendarran Fields and thought I would use this skill to cover the short distance that was just out of jumping range. Nope. Is this intended or am I using it wrong lol?

Since then its been off my hotbar. More useful in PvP for escape I agree. But whats the problem with having it being more useful in PvE as well? I suppose some are worried about Eles teleporting to safe locations and firing off spells from there or something? They would still be within range of other attacks.

Does shadow step and the engineers skill let them traverse gaps?

I dont know, prayer to Lyssa is actually pretty cool. It has a very short cool down of 12s and acts as a two-for-one (boon and condition). I actually placed it as my default attack, so when I circle strafe I dont even need to hit the button it just casts when the timer is up unless I am keyboard smashing. It may not seem like much but it saves my hide every day. Nothing like being close to downed and getting off a chill/regen or something or other which helps you escape.
