Guesting's impact on world events

I’ve always thought server spirit isn’t needed in guild wars. It’s a WvW thing. It’s not needed in PvE. Guesting should eliminate it. We don’t need it.
I really wish that PvE areas were common areas and just filled in “overflows” when the first one filled and so on.

It’s exactly how things worked in the original Guild Wars – overflows you are talking about were called districts.

For me personally “Ghosts of Ascalon” is the best of all three. Its exceptionally well written, well paced and makes the reader care about the characters. It was actually so good that I was literally blown away when I fist discovered that you can meet some of the book characters in the game. Not to mention my reaction when I found the resting place of one of them (hint – Fields of Ruin). Brought almost a tear to my eye.

As for other two books I have to say that I was not impressed with “Destiny’s Edge”. It felt so rushed in my opinion and had a pacing that I absolutely didn’t like. I.e. some parts felt way to dragged off while on the other hand things that had so much potential used to come down to one simple sentence like “and then they did that”. Actually I think that “Destiny’s Edge” can be summed up with “good beginning, way to dragged off and somewhat boring middle and an ending that was, well, ok”.

“Sea of Sorrows” was personally a mixed bag for me. One of the things that I can’t forgive ANet is the fact that prior to releasing the book they’ve put Marriner Plaques in the game with absolutely ZERO warning that they contain major spoilers. That ruined the book for me because the moment I read a character name I almost knew what was going to happen to him/her. I am also not that much of a fan when it comes to mixing pirates and all that sea stuff with Guild Wars. In other pirate oriented franchises maybe but focusing so much on pirates in Guild Wars (for whatever purpose) is something I am really not a fan of. Other than that “Sea of Sorrows” is a pretty good book – I’d put it right after “Ghosts of Ascalon”.

I think any game not on steam is losing right off the bat, especially buy to play games like GW2. Since the secret world went on steam the servers have had a sizeable boost. GW2 should be on steam period.

The original GW1 is on Steam however I don’t really see the point of distributing the game like that. Despite being a hugely successful service there are a lot of people that actually don’t like Steam or any kind of DRM.

If the system provides means to do stuff like that then its not the player’s fault. Dungeons should simply prohibit new players from joining once the group enters them. If you want to reorganize your party or invite new people then everyone has to go outside (an exception would be someone who is already in the group to compensate for potential DCs etc). Current system simply promotes stuff like spot selling and griefing by kicking people which actually helped the party.

To be honest something similar came to my mind long time ago. Not as extreme as your proposal but still in a direction of a monthly subscription. Thing is in the last couple of months I can’t shake the feeling that I am playing some F2P game with a strong emphasizes on micro-transactions. Normally I wouldn’t mind cosmetic stuff etc. (I never did during my eight years of GW1) but after seeing so many literally offensive restrictions in the game I simply have the feeling that someone in ANet decided to restrict how much content is worth the price that was initially paid for the game. I mean restricting people from entering that new Divinity’s Reach zone that was introduced during the Queen’s Jubilee event to people which bought a pass from the gem store really felt low. Then implementing an idea that was suggested by many people here (myself included) to introduce an instant trait reset token yet putting an insane price tag of 4g per use on it also felt very restrictive.

To cut the long story short, if adding an optional monthly subscription meant that people could enjoy unrestricted content which actually felt like something cohesive then I would gladly pay for it.

Aside from being a measure that proved to be completely useless, disclosing real user names publicly on a forum would probably create a legal mess because of the Privacy Policy (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/arenanet-privacy-policy/). ANet would have to change it in order to be able to use real names however given how restrictive privacy related laws are in some countries, especially in European union (yes Germany I am looking at you) this is almost near to an impossible endeavor.

That being said I also have to say that I don’t understand where all these “forums full of hate/trolling” remarks come from because from all the forums I’ve visited (a large number I’d say) this one seems very decent and civilized. Yes there is negative criticism but that should be expected for a game of this type. The important thing is wherever that negative criticism is found most of the discussion is pretty on topic and well within bounds of civilized discussion.

The Guild Wars 1 quest rewards were insanely silly. You hardly ever got an upgrade from them. In fact, you hardly ever got anything you could use….except the occassional skill. Of course, many of those were useless too, but that’s another issue.

Quite the contrary, GW1 quests offered something very important to the game, something that allowed people freedom to buy almost anything they wanted – gold (platinum). There were no artificial restrictions with dozens of currencies which were not interchangeable and were limiting you in the way what you had to do to get a specific piece of gear. You wanted Elite Templar (Marhan’s Grotto) armor? No need to waste your time on farming tokens if you didn’t want to. Just do quests, trade or do whatever you want to in order to get gold / Deldrimor steel / Elonian leather. It was imho a simple yet very effective system.

Relying on sites like pvxwiki was one of the easiest way to get owned in PvP. It usually took skilled players just a a couple of seconds to recognize if someone was using a build from pvxwiki and counter it. In PvE it didn’t matter. If you wanted to use seven hero support that was fine but still the beauty of the original game was that you could create so many versatile builds and test them. That alone provided for a huge amount of fun time spent playing GW1.

Take the drops from specific creatures. Do you have any idea how many times I ran Bogroot Growths with the hope of getting a Frog scepter. I can’t count them…and I never got one. That’s some how fun? That’s somehow not grind? Anet took that out because it bugged the hell out of some people. To some degree now they’ve put it back in anyway, with Tequatl if nothing else.

Which is exactly how it’s supposed to work. It might sound cruel but not everyone is supposed to have everything just because he or she wishes for it. In reality if you don’t want things to lose on their value or prestige you have to make them rare and unobtainable for some people. That’s what made GW1 very special – you could go casual if you wanted to but on the other hand you could also try your luck in obtaining the “unobtainable” things which made you feel really special if you managed to succeed.

As far as Tequatl goes it would have been a prime example of that original value system transferred from GW1 to GW2. However given that the event is plagued by some design decisions which make the success of the event more dependent upon others than yourself in the end it is a poor candidate for what I am talking about. If Tequatl was instanced and fully adapted for the standard five man party (or even better a couple of parties) and had a high chance of dropping a weapon (or weaponset) highly specific for that event then that would be exactly what I am talking about.

BTW, elite skills were unobtainable from the shop, just the basic sets for all four campaigns (expansions).

You can “move on” while retaining stuff that actually made the original so distinct from other games.

Elite skill capping (so I can actually make effort to get the elite I want not just pick it up from my hero panel), highly specific boss weapons (yes Rotscale I am looking at you), “on the fly” attribute changes which didn’t cost a dime, Guild halls (how hard is it to create one instance that can be reused by all guilds!?), hard mode (so you can choose how hard you want your content to be and be rewarded appropriately), faction points which felt way more useful from glory (why wouldn’t Asura be able to represent different colleges in sPvP, Charr different legions or even better make a factions separation based on the order players joined – Vigil, Order of Whispers and Durmand Priory?)…

I could go on for days about this topic because for me personally “move on and forget about the original” is simply not a valid argument for something that is actually supposed to continue the legacy of a game that was loved by so many people because it was so specific. In the end it is not about whether the developers can implement stuff that was specific for the original, just if they want to.

If the challenge is completed successfully during a given time (i.e. 4 minutes) player gets to stay on map, if not he/she gets kicked out of the map making room for people from the overflow to join. Yes it might seem a bit like a hassle but AFK-ers are a real problem on Tequatl because most of them are simply after achievements.

I don’t know, this is absolutely ridiculous. In fact I was keeping myself away from the battle and only went in when I was sure I would not be hit by enemy. Still, no achievement. This HAS to be a bug of some kind or there is something missing in the achievement description.

Is it required for Tequatl to die in order for this achievement to get registered? Or is it simply enough to keep away from poison during the fight, no matter what the outcome is? There is no mentioning of actually having to kill Tequatl while keeping away from exploding bloaters to get the achievement.

This is the only title that I actually want in this game. “The Sunbringer” fits really well with my Norn but I can’t seem to get that last achievement. Even worse I can’t figure out what is required to get it because no matter what pre-requisites I fulfill its still not there.

A Solution to GvG

What i find stupid about this is, the game is called GUILD WARS!! So this means GvG is a big factor then !!!!
So if this is not the main/big factor of this game they need to change the name then.

Its probably debatable how “Guild Wars” got it’s name but fact is there were three huge wars in history of Tyria between Ascalon, Kryta and Orr, all waged through organized groups of people known as guilds. These wars were named simply “Guild wars”. So the name itself might have something to do with these wars not the game mechanic itself. Though I have to agree, GvG was the unique trademark of the original Guild Wars.

Id say put them in garrison and SM, just for something to do while they defend. Saying that they give us a real reason to defend a keep.

The problem with that is that if a matchup is not entirely balanced (happens a lot with the new system) some servers would completely be cut off of using those stations in WvWvW.

WvW - Remove crafting stations

in Suggestions

Posted by: holodoc.5748

holodoc.5748

Crafting stations are only available on the home borderland and as such I found them to be very convenient in cases where I had to quickly access my bank without the need to sometimes spend 10s just to use waypoints. I use them when I play WvWvW but also on occasions where I just need to do crafting/selling/accessing my bank. Removing them would be pointless in my opinion because at least they provide some convenience to people who actually enter the borderland to do something useful (for them at least) – if people want to fill in the spots they can just as easily stand on the borderland waypoints.

The timer proposal is also pretty bad in my opinion because currently I find myself often threatened by the existing timer which tells me to “become active” although I am doing some stuff like crafting or interacting with the bank.

The only real solution for this problem is for ANet to find a way to increase the number of available slots for borderlands. No point in introducing some artificial solutions which might also not work at all.

Should I play GW1?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: holodoc.5748

holodoc.5748

I still play GW1 and as far as I can tell there is a constant increase of people filling in the gap that was made after the release of GW2.

Basically GW1 can be described as an RPG with MMO elements which makes some of the aspects of the game really shine in the eyes of RPG players (if for nothing else then for the simple lack of modern MMO “features” plaguing the game). It is more oriented toward good story telling and player experience with less time wasted on things like mini-games etc. The story itself is miles away from the generic “kill the dragonzis” of GW2. It has some breathtaking moments which, ironically, through instancing provide a more realistic feeling of players actually influencing the world than GW2 does through it’s dynamic events. I.e. once you progress past a certain point of the story you’ll notice a difference in your environment (mob spawns etc.)

As for differences in game mechanics, don’t worry. Aside from jumping and dodging everything else like targeting, skill usage etc. is exactly the same as in GW2 (which is not that good considering that GW2 is a way more action oriented game). You’ll get used to the non-existence of jumping and on the positive side visual effects in GW1 are way more toned down (you won’t have to deal with VFX fireworks every time you engage in larger fights). Professions also feel much more natural because they weren’t that much “streamlined” like the ones in GW2 (everything is either direct damage or conditional damage), offering players a real unique way of experiencing their roles. If you were a necromancer you weren’t able to just raise minions without a corpse. Charming pets as a ranger felt much more natural because it required of player to actually use skills and survive the charming phase, something that wasn’t that trivial when doing it with level 20 pets.

As for difficulty yes, GW1 does have a much steeper learning curve but it also allows players to experiment way more with builds and skills since its almost trivial to completely switch from one build to another. Additionally, missions are way more unforgiving (especially in hard mode) which makes progressing even more satisfying. If your team wipes during a mission there is no checkpoint! You have to start over. It made people realize how important it was to play well and give their best.

PvP was (and still is) way better. It has a multitude of game modes, some of them which are still considered as the elite zones in the game (Hall of Heroes etc.)

To cut the long story short, try the game (and all of the expansions if possible). But do take into account that some of the best parts of the game are reached after couple of tenths of hours into the game. I would personally start with prophecies because that is the place where it all started (you’ll have enough time to familiarize yourself with the game mechanics in Presearing). Then Factions (great scenery and some of the most appealing sights in the game like Echovald Forest and Jade Sea), Nightfall (you’ll get a chance to fight a god!) and then Eye of the North with it’s stunning landscapes.

So GW2 didn't get the 1 mil likes!

Even so most of the PvE people which enter the Obsidian Sanctum puzzle for the first time are clueless about the tools they have at their disposal to pass the JP more easily. There are three mystic fountains inside the JP which grant invisibility for a combined duration of 15 minutes. Gaming Mouse for GW2

Avoid Logitech G700 at all cost. I bought one a couple of months ago and the first thing that went wrong was that the palm grip cover peeled itself apart after just a couple of days of using. Additionally on normal gaming profiles the battery can’t last more than 10-15 hours which means you will be forced to use the wired connection on a mouse that was essentially supposed to be used wirelessly. As that was not bad enough some of the switches (middle click etc.) feel a bit awkward and some of the buttons, especially those next to the left click are very hard to reach even if you have somewhat bigger hands. After using a Logitech Performance MX mouse which is absolutely a stunning piece of technology (though not considered as a gaming mouse per se) I have a feeling like G700 is not made by the same company that made Performance.

There is one advantage though – if you play as elementalist then the four switches on the side are just perfect for switching attunements.

Trait resetting tokens

in Suggestions

Posted by: holodoc.5748

holodoc.5748

Not going to happen. There’s a reason that Anet made a difference in this regard between GW1 and 2. Iirc they don’t want us to be able to switch our traits on the fly.

I will say though, especially if these tokens were only 5-6s, id be running around with a full stack and switch my traits before every encounter. It’d offer the ability to base my build on particular fights without screwing up other fights in the same instance.

A valid concern but lets expand on it a bit. Currently there is nothing preventing players from changing their traits for every encounter – it simply requires more time to play that way. If you are in PvE a quick travel to a skill trainer and waypointing back is everything you need to do. In dungeons you can leave whenever you want, retrait and get back. WvWvW is the only exception because of lack of WPs but in general since that game mode requires playing in waves (wipes) retraiting is not that much of an issue there since it can be easily done in Citadel or WP itself.

But… It takes time and sometimes can be really annoying (like when forgetting to retrait after opening a dungeon). If these tokens would really cause balancing issues then why not simply add usage restrictions on them and make them a bit pricier. Lets say make the tokens cost like Elonian wine (25s) which would really incentivize people to visit skill trainers instead of buying tokens. I would still buy them at 25s each. If their overuse is the concern then why not introduce a condition every time a token is consumed which will prevent players from using another one in the next 10-30m?

Essentially introduction of these tokens would be a convenience for a lot of players, the same way depositing collectibles to the bank is.

A lot of stuff in GW2 simply got… Well… “Steamlined” I believe would be the word. I too miss some of the old GW1 mechanics, especially the ones reserved for rangers and necros (actual pet taming, using corpses to raise minions etc.)

People usually think that running Obsidian sanctum JP is easier when there is no one around. Truth is – its not If you die somewhere in the middle or there are enemy trolls which sole existence is based on enjoying pushing people in JPs then it is much easier to have someone around to revive you or just help you deal with the trolls Remember, if you kill them they have to start over right from the start and then its you who can troll them.
