Looking over the wiki I think I have some idea that might be really causing the loading times;
The Gw.dat metafile is series of 512 bytes blocks and internal files take up one or more consecutive blocks. When files are updated they can either be overwritten in place or, if too large, added to the end or perhaps another larger free area.
The line in bold is what causes the fragmentation in the gw2.dat file. It is setup like a SQL database (MDF/LDF), and even if properly indexed, chunking files that are supposed to be continuous around to the end cause they exceed the block size of the old file will cause fragmentation. This is why when I delete the gw2.dat file and let it recreate it from the down loader, my load times are fixed.
Lets look at LA’s updates, we had stuff push and pulled from LA 6 times this year (Broken fountain, upgraded fountain, vendors added, Event added then removed/..ect).
If a graphic or context was bigger then 512bytes, then that block of data was erased and the new data would be shuffled to the end of the gw2.dat data file. This method can and will screw up the context in such a file (Think like MS Access DB files
).
So, there are a few things that anet could do to help;
1. put a defragger in the gw2.exe client that we can run, it basically will delete unused 512Byte Blocks, and resort the data so it makes sense when accessing different parts of the game (if LA was on Blocks 29,000-68,000, and the new textures are on blocks 235,000-285,000 that is VERY BAD on the drives IOPS – Esp Sata drives that only have 75IOPS)
2. Put an option in the gw2.exe client to rebuild the gw2.dat file from scratch – probably a quicker fix, but it will take forever to download all that data again.
3. Write to the gw2.dat file, RFC proper, and treat it like a MS Access file. Truncate the data properly and re-index after each patch (which I doubt they are doing).
If something isnt done, its just going to get worse.

Fragmentation isn’t a problem with SSDs.
It is when the file is encapsulated and setup like a database file.
Take a look at gw2.dat, the entire game sits in that one file, which gw2.exe opens up and locks out so defragging tools cannot ‘fix’ the files internal structor.
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
I isolated the issues for the load times down, some time ago.
2 issues
1. Disk layer fragmentation
2. gw2.dat fragmentation issues.
If you are lucky and have access to Disk Keeper you can visually see the fragmentation that goes on in the gw2.dat file. And it gets worse with every update. And no, Disk Keeper cannot fix it as the data file is locked out.
The only current fix, that I have found, is to delete the gw2.dat and rebuild it from scratch (let the game updater download the entire game data stream in one go) as it writes the files to the data file, its not fragmenting the data all over the place.

don’t use the glyph its so ungodly slow that its literally faster for everybody to just hit F to revive if someone goes down.
Plus the Glyph requires changing attunement. F would be the better choice.

This sounds extremely fun. If you build a new guild for this send me an invite. My Ele is built in Fire/Lighting, but not in Zerker Gear (only 70% Crit damage), and stands with plenty of armor with out the earth tree.

Ya sorry VOIP is not a arguement…… most gamers these days use VOIP lol. It is pretty standard…. its part of the social aspect…. its a huge part of WvW, you dont have time to type out plans and where to go -.-.
The only reason why VoIP IS INFACT AN ARGUEMENT here is because unless its forced on you (IE. part of the GW2.exe Client) not every player is going to seek out the TS3 download client, setup the connection string, take the 15 seconds to figure out how to use it, then start using it.
The only way to beat this content is to have voice chat. I have NOT seen any groups complete this with out being on Mumble or Teamspeak.
its time GW2.exe gets a VoIP Client. And this content is the exact reason why.

No kidding, I am SO tired of how the wings Flap. I had to disable the graphic on my back pieces.
I think they need to fold out of combat, at the very least.
the Organic flow idea is really nice though. Having the wings mirror what the player is doing, yes a large under taking and I do not see Anet/NCSoft putting in any $ into the R&D on that at all.

Stealth isn’t at anyone’s disposal, thief and mesmers are the only 2 who can use it well( ranger is still a baby stealth). Both thief and mesmer are incredibly squishy, if they arn’kittens likely they dont hurt you as much. Mesmer however has a ton of access to boons and invulnerability, thief has very VERY weak boon access so the only means of defence are IN stealth( condi clearing, ini gain, regen, movement speed, IF traited). If you take any bit of that away thieves will easily be the #1 squishiest and most pathetic class in the game.
Want help on countering thieves? Play one in spvp or ask around in map chat or thief forums. There really is no threat, most thieves play very predictably.
Also invisible=\= invulnerable and invisible= no dps. If they are in stealth its because they are likely recovering and soo should you. The risk reward with stealth is if they want to sustain in it, they sacrifice a ton of powerful dmg traits, making their ability to burst you non existent unless you are afk.
+1 this.
I have a fully geared Mesmer and Theif. And until I did the Theif I did not have a clear understanding of how they actually work.
Thief’s need Invs to play, If you dont invs you are not only gimping yourself as a thief, you are also easy pray (as said, no stability. So they can be CC’d easily)
When you see a thief invs, the first thing you do is get away. They can only invs for 4 seconds, ever 3 seconds (they cannot chain invs, there is a debuff that is applied between invs).
Fighting against a thief is a speed game. Who kills who first. If your bust sucks, then CC them. If your CC sucks, then revamp your play style. Every class has the means to handle Thief’s, you just gotta figure it out.

This is what I want to see in an upcoming Patch.
Leave the Text chat alone, but give the players an option to disable it (with the exception of /msg, that should be ’On -Popup). And add in the same /map /guild /party /Team Options for Voice.
I would say, Guild should be the default Voice-Chat when you first login. If you join WvW then /Map or /Team should be, same goes for a 5man party in PvE (/Party would default then).
For Boss Events (Shatterer, Teq, Jormag mainly in mind) Force players in the area to default to /map.
And give players options on what chat rooms default to in what conditions, so that if they never want to leave guild chat except when they do WvW, that’s how it works per the players preference.
Its 2013 – and 1999 wants their text chat back. Lets comply!
P.S. – The system resources on this would not be that bad. If you ran a SIP embedded client using 96K compression, the Bitrate would be 110-125kbps per client. Thats about 15 VoIP Sessions per 1.5Mbps of internet. With how cheap BW is now, you COULD get a 1Gpbs connection from Cogent for 750/Month at most datacenters. The cost to support the Community would really be minimal. And if you hosted this on a dynamic Asterisk system the cost would only be CPU/RAM (which I’m going to say, should be minimal since you are virtual already…i HOPE), and Bandwidth (1Gbps should Suffice).
Just saying….other then R&D, there is no good excuse not to be working on this.

Guesting inst the issue, its the overflows.
What we need (really as a community) is for guests to take a back seat to the home server players when overflows start to spawn. If there is an overflow, Guests get kicked from the root when home players enter the zone. When the over flow pops, and you get queued, home players take precedence over guests.
Increase the zone limits to 300-400. (up from 180-200)
problem solved – in regards to this topic.

agree
this should have 2 versions
1. 40-50 Player instanced Raid hard as it is now or even harder
*cant a commander Squad have 40 people? so the commander should can start instance and people join him
*or Start like Guildmissions2. Open World for everyone but easy like it was before so players can kill it with Open-World Population
2. Open world where the timer is not present so that players that are actually trying, do not fail in the end. That is really the only change that needs to happen at this point to make it more open world friendly. Or double the timer (same as Jormag – 30Mins)

Expanding the wallet would be extremely simple.
Didn’t know you worked at ArenaNet to be so sure of this.
A lot of things in programming that seem simple… not necessarily are.
It’s a database.
You’re adding a field.
It really is not that difficult.
the DB is the easy part, its the UI, the UI sizing, and graphics (Icons are Not that easy to make when it needs to pass Q/A). Then its about the items added to the purchase field, on the vendor you create to hold items. new items? Skin creation, sizing for each race. Item Balancing (which stat weights do they put on them, do we have these stats on another vendor already)….so yea, you really have no clue.

The thought of yet another currency system really makes me cringe at this point.
Which is why they need to universalize dungeon tokens and then add world boss tokens which would drop from fights like Tequatl.
So that people can speed run AC, CoF, and SE in order to get Arah armor.
Or do Shadow Behemoth, Fire Elemental, and Great Jungle Wurm to get Tequatl stuff.
Makes. Perfect. Sense.
Oh yea, cause Arah gear is SO MUCH better then the gear from CoF or AC!
its just a freaking skin, the stats are about the same.
Universalize the tokens, give us tokens for playing the game (Boss tokens, 1 per boss per day per account), and have the boss tokens be used in conjunction with Instance tokens to buy upgraded Gear/Skins/Minis/Potions/ect.
RNG be kitten ed, make it easier for players to gear up appropriately, and leave the high quality skins on RNG.
At this point, we should not be seeing 80’s running around in Rares/masterwork. only Exotics and Ascended!

1. Home server players get priority to non-overflow above guest players.
Going to have to second and third this one. If somebody from the home instance attempts to join guests should be booted if they exceed the cap. Guesting is getting way out of hand.
The problem is of course that the encounter just isn’t doable on smaller servers which is why people are resorting to guesting on popular ones. You need a strong guild to lead and without that you’re SOL.
Smaller servers be damed. If a smaller server doesnt have the people, then guesting to that sever wont be an issue. But if I cannot get to the root of my server because of the 10,000 guests on it. There is something wrong with that picture.
we need a way to control players, as a community. I think thats the real issue with this new content. To many poor players, Trolls, Dead players scaling up the event, and AFKers ruining it for the 60-120 others that are actually trying at this point.
If the content is doable, providing you meet the requirements. Then no one here has any right to complain about it.
But again, that is just not the case.
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
These are the things that need to change;
1. Home server players get priority to non-overflow above guest players
2. AFK players in the area near any boss, get booted 5-10mins prior to the Boss’s activation. If with in 2 mins after the boss spawns, if players are still AFk they are booted elsewhere (off that zone), maybe LA.
3. When you are DEAD, not downed, if you are not rezzed or use a WP with in 30seconds, you are booted from the zone.
those 3 changes can possibly help this encounter succeed better. We, as a community, need tools to beat out bad/trolling players.

EverQuest didn’t have overflows.
Nor did EQ have crappy players. If you didnt know how to play you werent in the raid and you didnt get credit for the kill, NOR did you hamper the success of the 72+ other players that were working on that dragon kill.
Here, crappy dead players work against the alive properly played players. As the event scales to the number of players, dead or alive, in the area.

Im okay with challenging content. No problem, bring it on.
But this isnt challenging its frustrating. You are basicly throwing up the outcome of the fight in the air. Hoping that the few people on Turrets know what to do, if just 3-4 dont they will screw over everyone else. Ow boy thats just the first phase. And everyone can just join in, its not a controlled instanced environment. How is that “challenging”?
And lets talk about the technical limitations of this game? A massive clusterkitten of people all in a small area. Gee, i wonder what effect that will have on the gameplay. If only we had a way to anticipate this… Oh wait, we do!
Just ask anyone that ever seriously played WvW what thats like. Skill delay, lag, and missing effects from the AoE’s you should be doding. And goodluck spotting a red ring amongst that mess in sodding water. The difficulty from this fight doesnt come from learning the routine, thats easy. just takes a little time and you’re done.
It comes from utterly unreliable “allies” and big performance issues. The reward isnt anything good either. So once people did this fight once or twice, or just quit out of sheer frustration, they will have no real reason to ever come back again. The rush from the initial kill will never be experienced again, and that much work, effort and frustration for so little reward. Dont think so. Tequatl will end up as an ignore boss before long.
This pretty much sums up my entire feelings on the Teq2.0 encounter.
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
In order to overcome new events like Teq2.0, Anet needs to help the players succeed by removing players that are inactive/AFK from the home maps 5-10 Mins Prior to the start of said event.

IMHO the dragon should be killable with 3:30 seconds available on the timer. and this is not the case.
He was killed with a bit over 2:00 to spare on BG during their first kill. This was with massive amounts of death in Phase 1, and also a Bone Wall going up.
I know, but do you know how organized that attempt was? They had nearly everyone on TS, people that care enough to actually listen. Things that I have not been seeing with the general populous in the overflows, or even on my home server.

So, from what I can see…you need 60-80 well geared well played characters to even come CLOSE to beating this boss.
6 on turrets, 3-4 healers per set of turrets, 2-3 heavy classes to kite the champs away from turrets, while the healers beat on the vets/normal spawns to defend the turrets (as well as the Fingers that spawn)
then kitten players DPS’ing Teq at max damage (no Crit Gear since you cannot crit on Teq, but Condition boosted classes, and AOE classes). While they stay out of the AOE, Dodge the impulse Waves, and kill Fingers/random Mobs, and focus fire on the dragon, until that wall spawns…which they should be switching to until its down, then back to Teq.
Oh and stability is a requirement to battle the fear bombs, as it seems you need to be pounding on the boss 95% of the time to beat the timer.
and thats players that are not lagging, lazy, geared in complete exotic (max damage possible, really).
So, ANET, you would not put in raids in the game. But you do this instead?
Do you even care about the common player base? Do you have any idea what kind of organization this requires to complete?
I just dont see this event staying as OP as it is.
IMHO the dragon should be killable with 3:30 seconds available on the timer. and this is not the case.
You are not accounting for Player lag, Dealing with Downed Players/Death WP Runs, and the time it takes to bounce between targets.

Why not set the notes to match the key itself, with octaves and flats requiring a key combo
Eg. “A” plays the note “a” in the lower octave. “A + shift” plays the same note in the upper octave and “A + alt” plays the flat version of the note (thereby a + shift + alt would be an "a flat in the upper octave.
This would of course need to be a toggle, one mode as it is now for those not musically minded, and one mode for those who are
You have never learned to play music :-)
How about we setup the piano like a qwerty keyboard using your method??
the OP has it right on the money, the keystrokes should be similar to that of a piano. based on position of the sheet music staffing.
I really wish the virtual instruments were synthetic rather then ‘real’. Meaning, you have an organ or keyboard setup, and you buy sounds for it, so you can harmonize different instruments for different song types :-)

What you need to do is run Ping’s to several locations 15mins before you expect a disconnection.
and when the pings stop, do a traceroute to that IP address to find out what Hop it fails at.
Then Give that Info to support at Verizon for them to take to Level3 (NOC) to troublshoot.
Ping 4.2.2.2(Level3 DNS), 8.8.8.8(Google DNS), The Server IP for SoR(I dont know what it is), and your Default Gateway all using the -t (continuous) flag.
When pings stop where do they stop?
If its just SoR – then its at Anets end and you can’t do much about it
If its 4.2.2.2 and/or 8.8.8.8 along with SoR then its something with your Carrier (remember to do a traceroute to SoR)
If its also your default gateway, its your home equipment.

Level3 May or May not look into this issue depending on if its affecting their customers or not.
With out you having a service contract with level3 they do not have to lift a finger for you, even though you are routing through their data centers.
I posted about this the other day, as not only is the L3 Frankfurt routers having high response times, but also their routers out in LA (which is closer to the Anet US Servers)
I went through both my Internet (Cogent) and MPLS Providers, submitted an internal ticket and they are now talking with Level3 on the issue (It affects a lot more then just connections back to Arena Net servers…Thank god!)
So my providers are doing head to head testing with level3 (since they are direct hand offs to each other). While I do not expect this to be a large (read as world wide) fix. its a start to the root cause of the issues.

There are way to many people that are getting this problem for it to be everyones computer, its clearly an issue with the client and the way it uses memory, as soon as it requests more than 3Gb WHAM out of memory error, it was really bad back at the start when the game was launched it used to happen when you changed zones on a 32bit OS,
All these people with 64bit OS with 8+GB ram, getting out of memory errors, backed with the fact its been reported about 20-30+times on these forums alone and not 1 reply from an Anet tech about it, leads me to believe that Anet know about the problem, but they do not know how to fix it, or they cannot fix it, thus they do not want to me hounded on the forums by replying to a topic about it,
For me, I can play massive WvW Zerg battles ( NA T1 style ) and be fine, but the Scarlet event at the end, I crashed everytime, its a client based issue.
Lowering the culling settings by 1 tick on each did stop the crashing without any massive impact on WvW, even though I shouldn’t have had to do that.
I run i7 3770K
Nvidia 680GTX
16Gb DDR3
SSDI would much rather anet said sorry, we don’t know how to fix it/we cannot fix it, than just ignore it altogether.
There are obvious client memory addressing issues. In WvW when I crash, there are 15-25 others that crash at the same time (TS3 FTW). And adjusting the game settings, while will help sometimes, does not always fix the crashing. The more models in the area (Player or NPC, doesn’t matter) the larger the issue becomes.
GW2 is 32bit and suffers from the 3.5GB/4GB Memory Mapping Limit. Though, I have never seen my client go above 2.8GB when it crashes. So maybe there is a switch they have disabled that will allow the players to increase the memory foot print in the application?
But, there are also hardware issues that will present application crashes, such as over clocked memory (i see more players OC’in on GW2, then I have on any other game. Its why I always ask about it). So its best to hit up every avenue, esp since we are getting NOTHING back from Anet/NCsoft from this issue.

Overclocking your CPU also over clocks your Ram, NB and HT speeds.
I would MAKE sure your ram is running at its CLx specs (133/1600/1800..W/E), and your NB is at 1800-2200(depends on the FSB of the CPU) and your HT is never above 2200 (2000-2200)

Your screwed basically.
Any firewall that is blocking Proxies/Dynamic Port Allocation, is going to be hard to bypass.
Unless you have a remote ISP somewhere (LIKE YOUR PARENTS HOUSE) and you setup a PPTP VPN Connection back to that ISP and tunnel though it for all internet traffic (thats providing the firewall isnt blocking the GRE47+PPTP Communication ports to do it).
Alternatively you could pay for kitten .L.(stupid Anet Filter – Kitten on SSL?! Really?!) VPN service (20/month).
But otherwise, 99% of the time proxies are blocked when you see things like netscreen/Fortinet/SRX/ASA’s involved.

I have seen some issues with people having various hyperthreading and multicore problems in some programs, some claim that “unparking” the cores actually will help improve certain issues such as stuttering and other FPS related issues. Windows 7 by default will not allow all cores and threads to run simultaneously, even if you have your power settings set to full performance, the cores will go off and on according to usage, but unparking the cores lets them be on all at once. If you go into resource monitor you can see if your cores are parked and see the activity flip flopping between threads and cores while parking and unparking the cores.
Results seem to be mixed, some people saying that it does absolutely nothing, others saying it improves by various degrees. I have tried it and not noticed any improvement, in any programs, but i also haven’t had any serious FPS issues in any programs.
yea I confirmed it again last night, with the E5 series anyway, when HT is enabled the GPU has 0% used (via GPU-Z), when HT is disabled, my GPU will jump up to 75%.
its odd, but it could be the xeon architecture doing it.

The part that confuses me is why you’re using two Intel Xeon 8 core processors, extremely high end for server capability, for Guild Wars 2. That is beyond me.
Although for the purposes of experimenting, it looks like it could be… entertaining.
It’s due to the fact I have access to said hardware, and I do not want to put 1500 into a new desktop if its not going to make a HUGE difference for this game.
So yea, experimenting is what this is all about. Just happens that the box I pulled has 2 sockets populated (gotta love virtual environments with DRS, make for pulling servers out that much easier).
I actually think you’d have better luck with an i7 6 core processor. Maybe an i7 4930K. 500-600 bucks for an i7 that is able to rip through a lot.
You do realize a E5-2650 is 8cores + HT (16 theads), so having 2 of them is 16 cores, and/or 32 threads (though HT enabled seems to screw with the video drivers for some reason)

Heh, how do you think I feel when throwing 2 e5-2560’s at the game and I get the same performance on my PhenomII x4 CPU?
Its just the graphics engine, and how its poorly handled. No amount of hardware is going to fix that.

Hopefully at the same time they fix the biggest problems of dungeon groups at the moment:
1. If the party leader leaves, everyone is kicked out.
2. Kicking players out before the end of the instance to sell the spots to others.
2. is considered Player Griefing and whoever does that will be banned from the game. Back when I ran Arah, I had 2 groups do this to me. I reported both, and never saw the players online again.
just saying.
1. is still going to be an issue. Because the instance spawns are tied to whoever opens them. They will need to change the owner to something else (maybe a RNG generated by the LFG tool that expires after ABC time limits?)

I run Eyefinity on a pair of HD7790’s (CrossfireX on a TA890FXE board). Upgraded from a pair of HD5770’s and it was well worth the upgrade. I cant even imagine with a 7970 would bring to the table. I know the 7870’s are very nice, so I would expect 18-24% better out of the 7900 series.
the issue is with GW2. Even with the best specs, you just cant get the best performance. and running tricks like 3D or Eyefinity/surround reduce what performance we do get out of the game. so be prepared for that.
I since that board supports SLI and Crossfire (that is so very awesome, BTW) i would say review what people are saying about the 7970 vs the 770 and then either make a decision or flip a coin.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Out-of-memory-errorProblem is ancient but anet doesnt care. Support gives useless advices.
Don’t be a troll. Memory errors are not easy to debug nor fix.
This issue was introduced with the removal of the culling effect. And im willing to bet its a graphics crash more then system. due to the sheer number of player models + environment details.

OP – Are you over clocking your system at all?

If you are thinking WvW at 1080p and 40FPS, forget it. the game just cannot be ran at that FPS in WvW right now.
Anywhere else, you can obtain that with a new Video card (as already suggested).
I run a HD7790 with 2GB GDDR5 now (I paid 119+tax for it new) and I get 75FPS on High at 1080P everywhere but at very isolated events (Maw daily boss fight for example) and in heavily populated places like WvW and LA.
Its all going to come down to your sampling options and your shadows (Both will drive that card hard).
with everything set to high (with Sampling set to native, Shadows set to Medium) and it runs good for the 119 i paid.

Disable super sampling, and the texture filtering, maybe turn down the shadows?
Super Sampling will be another one, as well.
Those 3 options will abuse 99% of the systems out there, and if you happen to be on PCI-Express 2.1, with a 3.0 card, running DDR2-667(or there abouts) system memory, And anything less then a i5/FX-8130 those 4 options will cripple your system.

They just need to revisit the elite skill tree and make changes.
I like how they reduced the Cool Down on many, if not all, elite skills. that alone was a much needed change.
But there are a few things that still need to be done.

Nothing can push 25-35FPS in WvW in a large populated area, and certainly nothing for 650 bucks.

Sirsquishy for past few months I’ve been complaining about performance issues but no one from Anet seems to care about the issues in general. No point in a high end machine while playing this game because it doesn’t help.
I know. I normally run AMD (for the cost/performance), but since im starting to get more and more into WvW I had to test with Intel to see if the cost to build was going to be worth it. and the anwer is not at this time :-)
Not when my current AMD system runs at or a tiny bit better then my Intel test box.

NCsoft says what Anet can and cannot work on. Anet just does.

The entire player blocking system needs revamped.
There are several security holes with it. Such as if you block them, they can still see you online.
its going to be an ongoing issue until NCSoft takes this seriously.

There are various ways this could be implemented. None are easy from a dev stand point.
1. API (probably the easiest, then let the community do the rest of the work)
2. have GW2.exe spawn a child instance and bind all popup/windows to that child instance and have it live at the desktop level (but always on top) – This would only work if GW2 was in windowed/Windowed-Full screen mode
3. Remote WebServices built into GW2, this could be done with Flash/Java, but would require an API still.
I wish for an armory or a way to dump Character information into a CSV.

Collections and wallet NEEDS to be unlimited. Stash Stacks should be 500 IMHO.

+1
Lets add particle effect dyes as well.
And maybe to help Anet/NCSoft to get started on this; lets make it so you have to buy something in the gem store, combine it in the Mystic Forge, to enable weapon dye’s to be used on that item (so that not just any old weapon can be dyed, but it has to be exotic + Combine).
I also want to see armor effect dyes (radiant, CoF Armor…ect).
Legendary dies should be ones that add auras to your character, Ghostly effects, mesmers Fade…ect.
