I will throw in there that a slightly less pathetic way to run spirit ranger might be zerker with LB/GS, storm, stone, and frost and 30 Skirmishing, 30 Nature Magic, and 10 Wilderness.

That way you’re actually risking something, even though you’d be getting the most insane undeserved PBAoE burst ever.

If you guys don’t think two sources of long immob cooldown can’t set up hundred blades, then you’re not as good as you think you are.

If you don’t think any other good player has at least blink/teleport/invulnerability/block than you are not as good as you think you are.

GS/LB is a great weapon set and can be built in a variety of ways. Good Warriors will know that. The mobility, AoE, Immob potential with Leg Specialist, 100B for cleave and to take advantage of immobs…

It seems you don’t know much about Warrior.

anet just hates rangers. how many times do they have to nerf spirit rangers? 3 sec sun spirit proc and 33% damage decrease to storm spirit will obliterate the only viable build on a ranger.

power ranger build is never gonna be viable since rangers don’t have much burst damage compared to other classes (thieves, eles, warriors etc…). this nerf is unneeded. it’s time to roll another class and say goodbye to my ranger.

please, reroll now. if spirit ranger was the only ranger build you could play, a different class is probably the best idea.

Spirit ranger embodies literally everything that is wrong with GW2 pvp.

First of all, it provides crazy support while also having amazing potential for winning 1v1s versus a variety of classes. This is already an example of bad design. Support builds should have a chance to win 1v1s with skilled gameplay, but should generally be at a disadvantage.

The spirit elite is the most broken elite skill in the game. 400 healing per second+ two free ressurects on either yourself or multiple teammates in a 900 radius? This is legitimately ridiculous.

The 33% damage nerf to storm spirit should be 75%. I’ve had this ability hit 6,000 damage on me from a guy wearing a carrion amulet. Let me repeat this: 6000 damage from a guy wearing a carrion amulet. That’s more than I Backstab for generally. It’s totally absurd and makes me angry just thinking about this build.

Spirit ranger is also a primary example of dodge/evade spam with Natural Vigor, vigor uptime, and 3 evades on Sword/Dagger along with 1 on shortbow, all on low cooldowns. Not to mention it gains protection on dodge. In addition to being an example of evade spam, it’s also an example of reliance on passives as well as AI.

Finally, Ranger isn’t a weak class. There are actually plenty of viable builds being blotted out by just how overpowered the spirits build is. Nerfing spirit ranger is totally necessary for the ranger class as well as PvP in general. It should be nerfed more just due to how easy it is to play effectively.

exactly what you said. we rely on our storm spirit for burst damage. once that was taken away, we are left but nothing.

btw, i can play any build there is on a ranger but all of those other builds are selfish. they offer no support for the team. kite from a hard to reach area hoping that the tankers will last long, hoping nobody from the other team will notice. just pathetic. spirit ranger build puts rangers in the frontline. that’s what we want.

it’s really sad what they are about to do.

This is melodramatic. You can blast finisher in a Frost Trap to give Frost Aura to your teammates. You can use pets that spread Regen and Vigor. Shouts aren’t selfish at all, you can have perma regen/swiftness and remove condis if you use Soldier runes.

It’s okay once you have to learn how to play your class you will become a better player. I don’t even main Ranger and I just showed you alternatives to support off the top of my head.

Ranger and Thief needed the nerfs to vigor pretty badly, especially S/D. Just to troll around I did a hotjoin and dodged 9 times in a row vs. a Mesmer just to see how many I could do. It was totally ridiculous.

3 dodges with trait, dodge and vigor on heal, dodge in utility(even tho no body really use it in the meta s/d buiild) another dodge because of vigor, signet refile endurance, 3 dodges again, s/d 3.

without the utility dodge, that’s 9

and sigil of endurance.

Ya even if the double S/D build has to cast their sword 2, you are still going to mitigate a huge amount of damage if you use your dodges intelligently, while still being aggressive.

Well very few people are really going to miss the S/D thief anyway so I’m fine with only a few dedicated people being able to make it work

So let’s just kill a build because people don’t like it ( they did it with burst thieves already).

On a sidenote:

I dislike necros fear spam
I dislike spirit rangers ( most of all)
I dislike engi bomb spam
I dislike warrior’s faceroll stun spam
I dislike guardian’s 40% stability uptime and almost uninterruptible block heal.

Plz remove them aNet.

Why not just complain about taking damage? Nobody likes to see their health bar taken off, so maybe your constructive suggestion is to just be immune to damage when you log in while everyone else takes damage.

I think they’re okay with that for Mesmer and Guardian, because of the way that Deceptive Evasion and Selfless Daring work. There dodging has utility.

Thief and Ranger have weapon skills that evade too so it makes sense to limit their vigor uptime. Engis can already get 50% end regen through traits, so it also makes sense for them to have to build 30 Tools if they want to dodge as much.

I don’t think S/D is gonna be taken out entirely.

Lyssa, Sig of Agility, and Feline grace still give you plenty of dodges, it’s just that you can’t engage/disengage whenever you want with no consequence with Sword 2.

It’ll still be a tough fight vs. a good S/D player

Feedback by Class

Elementalist

  • Burning Fire makes Fire worth putting points in and helps Dagger offhand builds be aggressive without being melted.
  • I like the Earth changes. D/D is so fun to play and I can see Earth being the “D/D line” now.
  • Water changes are probably needed to prevent mega sustain DPS builds from taking over the meta
  • Arcane changes are probably in the same vein, making perma vigor more difficult to have.
  • Faster attunement cooldowns are great for the class. I remember trying non-Arcane builds and feeling useless so this was good.

Engineer

  • Incendiary Powder has needed to be more expensive it’s so strong for Condi builds
  • Looks like Bomb Heals are gonna be more useful for PvP now.
  • Firearms is gonna make Bomb/Nade builds even stronger haha, you put so many condis on people with that. Double check that
  • Good QoL change to make it less important to swap kits for swiftness. Also like nerfing perma vigor.
  • Armor Mods looks kinda scary. That’s better Aegis uptime than a Guardian O.o

Guardian

  • The DPS boost is good since you really have to engage well to get the most out of the playstyle. More reward for the risk is nice.
  • Symbol of Swiftness is a really good mobility change

Mesmer

  • I actually like the Daze duration change, although the combination of the Mesmer rune, Domination XII, Staff, and Shatter 3 could be devastating. If I can immob a Necro in a chaos storm with this combination they will be completely useless.
  • Mantras are reaching that point where they might be really good now. We’ll see though.
  • Shattered Conditions is interesting, that’s a huge radius for removed condis.
  • I’d suggest serious caution with the Daze buff, this has stunlock Mesmer written all over it.

Necromancer

  • These look good. I like where Necro is headed, where they’re the scariest guy on the team if you let him live. I think the conversion changes make Valkyrie’s builds look really good for them with Dagger power builds.
  • Slightly reducing condi pressure is probably best. If condis are destroyed then Necro becomes a lot less threatening
  • I agree on mobility, Necro is too strong to be all over the map as is.

Ranger

  • Finally, Ranger might actually be respectable now. It’s always been that class that nobody really likes but have to take because of evade spam on the home node.
  • Storm Spirit nerf is great. One shotting anyone in melee range that doesn’t block or dodge it with low armor on a tanky build is totally ridiculous.
  • Go go Power Ranger! That’s the kind of playstyle I’ve wanted from Ranger since Day 1.

Thief

  • Less effective stealth and evade spam. THANK YOU.
  • Some thieves are freaking out about this, but even their chart analyses show that Thieves are getting buffed not nerfed
  • The haste on crit looks interesting, IAS is always strong, but especially on a class that can pop up from nowhere and gank you.

Warrior

  • Nerfing Hambow is good for the game, just like nerfing perma evade S/D and Storm Spirit is.
  • More predictable skull crack is good, although more of a Solo Q problem than Team Q.
  • Haste at 50%?! Hehe my GS/LB warrior is salivating at this.

Overall

  • Love the nerfing of evade spamming as a whole. Really important change for PvP
  • If this direction of nerfing the apex builds keeps up, we might have real competition instead of build wars.

So if you run the same S/D build as before on Dec. 10 you get a .7 boost to init/second, not including the init you’d be getting from Infiltrator’s Signet.

Using this chart if you add up the total and the boosts from klepto and opportunist, it’s still higher than current, and not even including the bonuses from infiltrator’s signet.

You must have read the variance column and gotten mad or something that chart actually disproves your argument.

Haste on crit buff, assassin’s reward, and the vulnerability stacking potential look really good with the init regen boost.

How do you know this, do you even play thief?

Yes I play thief among other classes.

The initiative boost is huge. It’s one of those things that doesn’t look good on paper, but will shock you in game.

The post talked about depending on init traits/utilities and that’s addressed. That’s letting thieves be more aggressive, not less.

The sword changes are very important for the game, because that single weapon has been holding back two entire classes’ total packages.

If they nerfed HS, Warrior would be fine. Mending gets rid of 3 conditions on a 20 second cooldown. Surge is the best burst heal in the game.

Once again, your spreadsheet or “math” only takes raw healing numbers into account. You don’t take secondary effects of heals into account and you don’t take other sources of damage mitigation into account – such as protection access, stealth, etc. This means that all you have accomplished is presenting a biased argument (of course I am well aware that was exactly your intention though).

That’s the point of the chart.

It’s okay though even if they nerf healing signet the other heals are almost as strong, you just have to actually click their button a few times in a match :P

I agree with everything you’re saying, but videos tend to be much more effective at explaining.

One day I saw O Eggs go over rotations a bit on GW2PvPTV and after some miserable matches in solo Q I had the idea to suggest that, because I ended up pming someone brand new about how to rotate for about 15 minutes that was curious but upset that he was so ignorant.

I have a question for good/great players that have the time, means, and desire to make a video on twitch or youtube:

Can you please make a video that teaches people how to rotate from point to point effectively in matches with either their class or, preferably, a variety of build archetypes? Decision making and build archetype’s strengths, weaknesses are really good information too.

Examples

  • Thief/Mesmer burst (shadow trap, portal, SB 5, Staff 2 mobility)
  • Bomb/Nade engi
  • Warrior
  • Bunker Guardian
  • Home Node Ranger

And Allie, if someone makes this video can you make it a sticky?

There are so many players that never learn this until they get screamed at and having a place to send them to learn this incredibly important basic skill would improve QoL for everybody and make matches more competitive at every tier.

The in game tutorial doesn’t go over that, and as a suggestion it needs to be or there ought to be a message upon logging into HotM the first time to check out the tutorial section of the forums or something.

The meta builds generally accomplish a bunch of these roles at the same time. Obviously the top players don’t sit there and theorycraft, but they naturally gravitate toward these types of builds because they bring so much to the table.

Any objective analysis of the game is going to be more beneficial than just taking some dude’s word for it.

1v1 is only a small part of a match though. If you’re trying to 1v1 something that is inherently good at it then it’s your fault not Anet’s.

What’s funny is the few times I see MM’s they literally sit on a point all match and don’t even rotate. I can leave them alone and kill their teammates all match because it’s a 4v5 while they play with themselves on their point.

That could work with something like Axe/Dagger, Dagger/Focus where you can immob stack, strip boons, pass condis, and put weakness on people while doing good sustained DPS with the mainhands.
