Sadly, we have that other thread with a TON of helpful suggestions and meaningful discussion to improve the class. We even had manager or developer interaction. Please point out where any of those suggestion saw use in the game.

At this point, the community isn’t in the mood to be nice. While I’ll freely admit I’m loving certain changes, which shall not be mentioned because I want them to stay, I completely understand why some of our peers are a bit . . . peeved.

So, we have spirit ranger made useless, bleed rangers made useless, and now this newest nerf.

I like this idea as well. It was suggested a few weeks (months?) ago and I really like the idea of my pets rallying from my kills.

Some thoughts:

1. Pets don’t jump down ledges because they literally can’t. If you ever transformed into an enemy using a tonic, you’ll notice most of them don’t have a jump animation. Also, if pets can jump down ledges, that would enable enemies to knock our pets off ledges.
2. I really like barrage the way it is, except for the root. Being allowed to move while channelling it would be enough for me.

Not exactly when dead, but when pet is injured. Would be nice to change that trait though. Rewarding the player for letting the pet get damaged isn’t really a good mechanic. Also, PETA will get mad :P

These are really good suggestions. I really like the Primal Echoes trait and yeah it would definitely give us more of an edge for in terms of support.

What happened to the “Training” traits though? No more additional condition duration for pets? I really like that trait.

What do you want to do with your pet? Because you can always go with a 10/20/10/0/30 build, your pet does HEAVY condi and direct damage as you pew pew with your direct damage, nothing really changes…

If you were a tanky BM and you want to stay that way you can always go 0/10/X/X/30 -I- go 0/10/0/30/30 in PvE for more supporty stuff and my pets were actually buffed, granted i’m one of those weird people who wears Magi gear…

Interesting. I was thinking of just the same thing. A condition pet and running 10/20/10/0/30. Which pets are you running with this?

I’ve had mild success with the Eagle’s Lacerating Slash (lol 2 stacks of 21 seconds of bleed every 5 seconds). The traited Jaguar is still the same since the bleeds from his crits deal offset the lost damage from the nerfed Maul. I’ve yet to try Lynx with this, but oh man does it look nasty. Fully traited, it’s 30 seconds of 4 stacks of bleeding on a 30 second cd, and it gets affected by the Rending Attacks trait.

Spiders are slightly better, but the damage still feels lacking for a build invested 30 deep in BM.

I should really update the Useful pets with 5/0 in BM guide with all of this XD

You know, if you posted that deep and insightful analysis instead of “this build is crap, good D/D eles will pwn this trash! #swag”, this thread would have seen much better discussion instead of people getting inflamed.

That said, you make valid points.

Personally, I think we should have Search and Rescue resurrect the pet if its dead or bring it back up to full if it’s damaged. It’s on an 85 second cd anyway (much longer than the death timer), and it’ll give us a reason to use it. It’ll make it a pet-rez and ally-rez at the same time.

For once you post something that doesn’t make me cringe! I went in here expecting another overly dramatic monologue, but I’m actually pleasantly surprised by what I read.

Good find on this article as it is very similar to what we have now. It uses very interesting terms to describe the two sides: “supports anything” and “rabid community.” How amusingly relevant.

There should be a third group though. The Middle Grounders. The people that dislike the changes as much as the rabid community does, but still plays the game like the supports anything. The kind of people that gives solid feedback and not vague complaints. More critical thinkers than QQers. I hope this community gets more of this kind of people.

Guys, I need help determining which of the builds above are still viable after the June 25 patch.

Any build using 5 BM for Zephyr’s Speed is automatically out.

NOTE: The builds post links here. These builds were created before the June 25 Patch where we got a lot of changes. These may or may not work anymore so I moved them out of the OP and into this post.

Interesting. When people say “protection” on ranger, it’s always the protection on dodge. Actually utilizing Stone Spirit for protection looks very interesting. Couple of questions:

1. Is this PvP/WvW/PvE/Dungeon?
2. How do you deal with people that kill the spirit first?
3. How many people actually think of going spirit first? :P

Well for 1, the barrage damage with the LB was cut in half after the patch. This wasn’t stated in the patch, only the cripple duration was extended by 50%… big whoop. The dodges make cripple generally ineffective.

Barrage used to be a source of good damage to groups if you traited and geared yourself properly; after the patch, a full zerker ranger using barrage against another full zerker class does laughable damage. Your better off just standing back and spamming 1 and 2.

Both the LB and SB seem to not be able to hit anything inside the 500 range. The attacks either get obstructed or they miss entirely.

As for what the ranger does well? I’m guessing a BM bunker build is still probably decent to use; however it’s completely ineffective in WvW unless your solo roaming. Even then, except to get run over by a zerg more often than not.

You keep repeating this and I have not seen this issue at all. My Barrage is still hitting for 800~ non crit and 1k~ with crits in zergs.

Previous patch non crits range from 400-800. Crits from 1500-2500.

With this patch, non crits 200-400. Crits are 900-1400.

Tested damage on a buddy of mine in full zerker gear 3 weeks ago to test some ranges of damage both with LB auto-shot and barrage (to see if it was actually that viable for WvW)

Previous patch barrage damage ranged consistently from 700-2600

Tested barrage on him last night in his full zerker gear..

Barrage damage ranged from 300-1450. Low end never lower than 300, no crit ever higher than 1450. Crits averaged about 1200.

So yes barrage damage was reduced roughly 50% give or take. Perhaps they reduced the damage zerker gear has done; however my stats did not change.

Durzlla also had the same thing happen to him, and later found out that he confused pet damage with barrage damage. Maybe thats what happened to you as well? Did you change traits? Did you have might stacks when you tested it pre-patch?

I dunno, dude. My barrage damage is still the same in my knights/berserker mixed gear that I use in WvW. Also, I’ve never seen my Barrage go over 2k per hit, even in a full berkser/ruby orb set.

I have a level 80 Guardian and lvl 80 Mesmer. I still prefer to play my ranger despite having the “elite” classes because I enjoy the ranger class more. Whenever I play those classes I constantly miss the presence of my pets because they are actually useful. We get so much CC variety from knockdowns to immobilizes and yet the only thing people focus is damage. The support that rangers provide is from these CC skills (of which rangers have a LOT of, and we can even opt not to have dedicate utility slots for them) and not from giving boons like might. It might not work well in PvE/dungeons but it is amazing in sPvP/WvW.

The Spear skills were nerfed this patch. How many guides have you seen that said “OMG guise use SPEAR underwater iz OP pwn nubz npnp lolol”?

Nerfs will happen regardless of what the ranger meta build is. Everything will change depending on the direction ANet wants to take their classes. Just look at the quickness nerf.

That said, I’ll still make guides and builds and share them when I find something new and effective.

It’s a lie. I tested it and I was still getting as much damage as I had before: 800~ non-crit damage up to 1k~ crit damage when used in clumped up zergs.

We might just see it fixed in the next patch.

The Swoop issue exists even before the patch. I’ve been using GS for months and I know I’ve missed quite a bit of my Swoops.

I haven’t really figured out the problem with it, but I’ve seen it miss more often when the take-off point and the landing-point are in different elevations.

Serpent’s strike also has this problem pre-patch. It’s hard to hit any moving target with it because of the weird pathing of the animation.

We can’t mistform either. Lol.

I would submit to you that there are ways to avoid being in that situation and it begins (it starts day one) with clear, open, and meaningful communication. But, for ANet, that boat left pier a long time ago and its too late to jump on it now.

This disconnect between the player base and ANet really comes down to one simple question: Which came first, the chicken or the egg (the distrust or the cause)?

Truth is, people hate change and hate being nerfed regardless of what devs do, don’t do, promise to do, delivered or otherwise. Oops, my bad, I thought you were talking about Instinctual Bond (the new BM adept minor trait).

The bonus is nice and pets need all the stats they can get, but it just feels like it goes away too quickly

The only time I used it was when I’m sure that I won’t get into too much trouble like when I was farming Sparks in Malchor’s Leap or farming Risen in Straights of Devastation.

Although I will agree that it has potential. It might work for a tanky build in sPvP.

It’s still a very iffy combo. Master’s bond goes away when the new adept minor trait kicks in, so it won’t benefit from it Master’s bond needs to be reworked.
