so if any type of avoidance including the use of LOS, terrain, player movement(dodge included) and player skills/utilities counted toward the daily, you’d be satisfied?
I will say this: I don’t believe the daily dodge was anet’s way to increase player skill. that may be over interpretation(though to each his own). if you are a competent dodger, then what bearing does this have on you other than when partying in dungeons or highly difficult events? if someone is a poor dodger, I doubt this daily was designed to better their skills. am I to believe that daily harvesting is to increase my harvesting skill? or how about any of the other dailies? I’m playing Devil’s advocate here in the hopes that I understand what you want out of this daily. if you can complete it, what does it matter to you how others do it?
then perhaps if anet changed the wording to ’ daily evader.’ would that satisfy you? I do see a tangible difference between avoidance and evasion
if you don’t mind Southsun, I tagged 2 karkas and dodged 6 times for completion. having runes of energy was a bonus =]
op, I smell a future in fanfiction.
Robert H., I am a huge fan of yours. along with john smith I learn the most interesting things about this game and both of you post regularly enough to make me wonder why people say anet doesn’t communicate enough. well ‘communicate’ has different connotations, but for me, you two always bring useful info to discussions.
in regards to the chest loot, I think they are actually pretty good where they are. I usually get 1-2 rares per full run(all paths) of any dungeon from chests. sometimes an exotic.
quick question, does anyone know if rare/exotic runes and sigils take the place of a rare or exotic piece of gear? how about those tonics? since tonics are consumables and runes/sigils are upgrade components I am led to believe that they don’t interfere with the chance of looting rare equipment..?
I got 2 blsk’s and 2 bl traders this week. more than what I’ve received lately
celestea- agent = wine in the same recipe for promotion. i would rather save my laurels….
i was able to get 200 charged cores in about 12 days. so 100 charged lodestones will take me 1-2 more days to buy up the elonian wines i’ll need.
by day, i mean 3-4 hours of play time, as i didn’t play every day. about 5/7 days a week
it all depends on how you want to go about it. streamline your progress(and lose out on some fun/random elements of tyria) and you’ll see good results in shorter time span.
in case anyone was wondering, no i’m no master of the tp. i only use it to sell stuff that drops that i have no use for. i don’t know how to flip/manipulate items/people. was never in my nature to do that kind of stuff anyway.
the t6 mats are not difficult to come by as you all would think. as of the jan 28th patch, i can come up with 6-12 t6 mats per hour, which is in addition to my gold gained per hour. there’s isn’t a need to buy all 250 of each or whatever is left after clover recipes.
gross overstatement
working on my second legendary and i didn’t flip or manipulate a single item on the tpWay, way too much of the process can be side-stepped with money, both real and virtual.
now this is a sensible statement and i agree 100%. however, the key word is can. it doesn’t mean that all the purchasable parts of a legendary were bought. it is highly suspect that at least some of it was. i would even go so far as to say it was almost guaranteed that some parts were partially paid for in gold, because gold is such an integral part of the game’s economy and players come into contact with it in myriad ways.
even if most of a legendary didn’t have to be bought with gold, i can say with certainty that even the most ardent non-trade post players posting about making one from DROPS alone would not be opposed or even bought some mats to shorten the time invested. what i can’t say is how much bought = legendary = symbol of wealth. that is up to the person who is making the legendary to decide.
Legendaries are just a show of coin now. Spend a few weeks standing at a trading post vendor, you get a legendary.
gross overstatement

[edit]
i understand you mean that in a sense that some players earned theirs by playing tp wars, but i speak for myself and the people on my followers list with legendaries when i say that most if not all of us did not spend our time in game making small talk with the black lion merchants
(edited by kiba.2768)
1. Which legendary are you going for?
- bolt
2. Do you have any gifts? If so, which one(s)?
- gift of mastery
- gift of fortune
- gift of metal
3. Which gift are you working on? And how far have you come on it?
- gift of lightning(16 more charged cores). i have enough gold to buy them and convert all 200 into lodestones, but i’m waiting to see how the market reacts to the binding agent after a ton of monthlies are completed today(mine included).
4. Addition information you want us to know, maybe a picture.
- made the flameseeker prophecies and now i want something to go along with it. 2x legendaries on display simultaneously = win. all my gold was made without flipping items or manipulating any stock on the tp. i make about 4-8g per hour depending on what part of tyria i’m in.
[edit]
i forgot to add that i need to get zap as well
(edited by kiba.2768)
Well to start with you are making poor choices for weapon combos.
i doubt the truth in this statement. it depends on what he’s doing. i myself run a sword/shield//scepter/shield and i have absolutely no problems in pve, dungeons nor wvw. besides, he can’t change his shield out for the legendary focus now can he?
When you run a guardian with shield unless the situation calls for it you get labeled as a pug. Fact. So if thats what you want or you just plain like shield thats fine, I guess.
argument null and void. who said pug = bad? there is nothing to discuss if there are no coherent points. i will say this: my followers list is huge from carrying groups. and i do it with my shield. no doubt.
it’s anecdotal, but i will never give up my shield for a focus as i’ve tried it and it does not suit my playstyle.
OP, go moot. the new effects are amazing and sunrise is tired and old if you’re going for aesthetics

moot!
i have FSP and having 2 legendaries equipped at once is a perk of using 1h weapons
what i want to know is, what is the difference between warrior and guardian boxes? what about the difference amongst engineer, thief and engineer boxes? mesmer, elementalist and necromancer boxes?
i ask because any of these professions can find usefulness in ANY stat combination currently in-game(yes, some may be utterly useless, but that’s because many follow a cookie cutter build)
what’s the difference between berserker gear from the warrior box versus the guardian box? i think having soldier, adventurer and scholar boxes would have worked out better.
unless there are some UNIQUE stat combinations that are only attainable via profession specific boxes.
and while speculating on precursors, does that mean if you wanted a remote chance at crafting a juggernaut, you would ONLY open warrior/guardian boxes, since no other profession can wield hammers?
My guardian with mix and match armor
i love that you achieved a non metal set. our options for different types of material such as leather or cloth are pretty limited.
it looks great!
wait, since when did the pvp daily give out laurels?
charged cores@ 1.1s now.
lodestones@2.9g
still dropping. get em now, boys
so our group is currently wiping against this guy on scale 30 with everyone at 30ar except 1 guy.
you can dodge his agony, but it’s luck. there’s no tell, so if you happen to dodge at the right time you evade it, but he uses the aoe so often that eventually you run out of stamina unless you are swapping with sigils of energy
does this mean that if i ran lvl 10 and my reward lvl is 30, i would get a 30 chest for doing lvl 10?
even lvl 2?
they are pretty easy imo. underwater combat. really? it takes less than 5m to get all those kills
thank you for this karma sink anet!!!
i made a killing with the karma sitting on my main!!!!
it seriously isn’t that bad. my guard’s weapons sets both do not have any combo finishers, so i had to buy a white gs and run around at pent/shelter throwing down purging flames and hallowed ground in addition to gs2+3 for my completion. but it was fun and i got 5unid dyes and 2 rares out of the events. can’t complain
my combo daily completed in 5m in orr. ty liulirenai!
this should make things a little easier, though i had already spent about 80g on charged cores in the previous week.
let’s see those bolts/infinite lights/mjolnirs!!!
let me illustrate a point that though i didn’t express, it was more a read between the lines thing that ties in succinctly with mark’s official post.
what if a recipe was released in the patch notes that said for ‘x new item,’ you need:
250 powerful sacs of venom
150 mystic coins
200 karka shells
50 globs of ectoplasmnow, as per mark’s post, what if this recipe was not 100% working, yet according to the entitlement whiners here, the patch notes are due NO MATTER THE CONDITION OF THE PATCH ITSELF?
The thing is though, even without confirmation of recipes, the market is impacted by speculation anyway. Have you seen material prices lately?
Then of course the moment the patch hits, everyone who figures out this recipe in the first 5 minutes will storm the TP and buy up everything that it uses.
you missed the point. speculation happens. people lose gold on speculation as well as gain. however, the loss/gain is solely on their shoulders.
when anet ‘guarantees’ an item with a set recipe and if it were known before a patch hit, people would buy up(no longer speculation at this point) all the mats needed for said item. when recipe returns a porous bone instead of new shiny item, be ready for incoming backlash.
so really, it is no longer a question of speculation. it’s more that anet ‘didn’ deliver’ on their patch notes. but whose fault is it really? the whiners who want(incomplete) patch notes. and this is my guess, but it’s because they are NOT impatient. they are tp manips who want to get an early start on making gold off of people who don’t know better.
xavion, your point is pointless. we are here just like everyone else in anticipation of the patch dropping, yet we aren’t pointing a gun at anet’s back demanding notes prior to launch. i’m not fanboi’ing anet in any way, but imagine if there was an angry crowd outside of your workplace demanding something you couldn’t 100% guarantee because of unforeseen complications? how would you feel? not great, i can imagine.
LOL you have no idea how close you just came to my own customers. In my job, information- constant information- is vital to success. Thanks for that.
my work sector covers customer service occasionally and when i have to deal with ornery people, it is not beneficial to have unconfirmed data to present to dissatisfied customers
I’m confused, how do other games release patch notes (or a list of changes NOT related to the TP (or AH)) early then? It has never been an issue with other games as far as I know. I’m also very very confused about how anybody could not be sure what was getting released today. Shouldn’t all of this have been tested, tested, and re-tested before today? If not releasing something is related to the actual process of patching and some error there then isn’t there a method for testing that? I admit you can’t foresee every outcome but within reasonable doubt you can assume most will work before it is ever patched. How much testing actually takes place behind closed doors?

tp manips would go buy up these items furiously and artificially raise prices to astounding levels. then guess what? the recipe DOES NOT WORK.
now 3 things happen here:
1. the manips get kitten at anet, even though it wasn’t their fault. ‘when it’s done, it’s done.’
2. those who needed those mats are punished for the impatience of the people pushing for patch notes.
3. both parties lose confidence in anet’s ability to deliver, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T ANET’S FAULT.
gosh people really. learn to be patient.
You should read at least 1 sentence of my post… it would have saved you a lot of time. “or a list of changes NOT related to the TP (or AH)” I fully understand not adding in changes that directly or indirectly relate to the TP, but there are many changes (class, events, etc) that can be disclosed much earlier without much if any problems.
And on this “What if they find a problem 10 minutes before the patch is released” thing: If that happens, there wasn’t decent testing going on. Why are we getting a patch that they aren’t even sure about? Why are we getting a patch that they think might still hold some critical bug? If you aren’t sure (within a reasonable doubt) that this won’t go off without too many hiccups, and you aren’t sure enough to disclose patch info, then it probably hasn’t been tested enough. I do NOT want to be some QA group. That makes the game look like a beta and it shouldn’t be.
i did read and dissect your post. check it out homeslice:
people want stuff that anet is 100% sure about. that includes items.
moving on, everything affects the tp. it may be too subtle for you to notice, but everything links back to it. unless you’re running an ironman style of play, coming into contact with the tp at any given point of play is 100% guaranteed. so even if notes are released without any inference to the tp, you can bet your kitten people are going to interpret whatever they can out of the notes, do some tp manipulating, when it fails, blame anet for an early release of(unfinished or not 100%) notes.
xavion, your point is pointless. we are here just like everyone else in anticipation of the patch dropping, yet we aren’t pointing a gun at anet’s back demanding notes prior to launch. i’m not fanboi’ing anet in any way, but imagine if there was an angry crowd outside of your workplace demanding something you couldn’t 100% guarantee because of unforeseen complications? how would you feel? not great, i can imagine.
Kiba, you forgot option 4. “sellers of the recipe get banned”.
Oh just kidding! :P
you never know…what i believe is that anet learned from the snowflake fiasco. if a recipe were to loop infinitely with a 100% return in both profit and material, they would want to make sure it didn’t happen again and have a bad week of PR what with permabans and then the banned and co lashback against anet’s actions.
i would expect laurels to not be rewarded for dailies until next month

that statement is completely unreasonable, your patch releases contain hundreds of bugs and errors which you still have to be fixed later on, so releasing the information does not affect in any different way as the bugs and errors you are already including, if you dont want to release the information right now, then atleast come up with better excuses.
really. this is quite sad. there are many reasons why patch notes are not released before the patch rolls out. what mark said is completely true. in addition, if any recipes are released, then the effect on the tp is absolutely massive.
so after the release the tp is not affected massively anyways? right, that is what you ment?
anyone who uses the tp knows that speculation runs rampant the days leading up to a new patch. those who bought up a ton of mats that are rendered useless lose in their gamble. now if there was such a thing as guaranteeing that your speculation paid off, then there’s no risk. those who stand to gain, will gain much more with an early release of patch notes. now do you understand? it is absolutely unfair to players who do NOT browse the forums like the tp vultures.

i’m probably going to get a lot of flak for this, but i think the current lodestone prices are quite decent. i don’t do any flipping on the tp. fractals and dungeon runs provide me with the only gold i get per day that i play(5/7 days a week) and i can afford 4 cores at the end of my session. in regard to bolt, my second legendary that i am working on, it will take me approximately 50 days to achieve the gift of lightning. that is pretty reasonable to me since i am not a hardcore(…impatient?) gamer.
100 tokens per lodestone is way too low. 200 or 250 sounds better for a lodestone.
is the tp lagging?
i placed a buy order for 50 t6 totems and there’s nothing in my buying tab. since i didn’t get a confirmation on my buy order, i pressed it again. it took 25g from my inventory, but again, nothing in my tp window to indicate i have any standing buy orders nor any of the items i have up for sale. relogging didn’t help and it’s been a while now.
anyone else experience this? i can place stuff for sale, but it won’t show the items i’m selling either.
[edit]
i had to log in with a different character to get my tp ui working again.
(edited by kiba.2768)
i was thinking about this a little more today and although it may be awhile until ascended weapons are released, what about people who use 2h vs 2*1h?
would it be fair that a hammer have an inherent base 10ar and as infused 20ar? because if it were just 5->10 it would put players who use them at a disadvantage in comparison to a player who uses 2*1h for a total of 20ar if each can be infused to 10ar. however, if 2h had base 10ar, people with a 2h legendary would have a leg up on those who use 1h…
i’m with dempsey that they do not put ar on weapons(even though i’ll have 2*1h legendaries by then) and stick to ar on trinkets and armor. this would solve the discrepancy between 2 handers and 2* 1 handers
Oh, I can top that.
this pretty much made my night…i don’t even….
but i laughed for 2 minutes straight…hahaha
there’s no need to change how projectiles behave in accordance to any utils that nullify them. rather, add in beams(they are not classified as projectiles and bypass wor/soa)
right, then the environment design is flawed, not the profession nor the profession skills/utils. if some of the projectiles in future fractals were changed to beams or the encounters were moved away from ranged dependency, there wouldn’t be debates over whether or not a single profession’s skills would need nerfing.
robert hrouda said it himself in regards to the solo warrior dungeon runs that it displays true mastery of the profession and no nerfing was coming down based on 1 player’s experience. in the same fashion i believe he would not be pressed to change the guardian’s anti projectile mechanics based on 1 aspect of the game
vena- i’ll say it again because even though your tone has softened, you still stand behind the same points.
we will NOT see a nerf to wor/soa because of fotm because it would affect all other areas of the game where wor/soa is considered balanced. if a nerf were pending, it would be because those 2 utils are imbalanced across the board, traited or not.
i would argue that soa has it’s very important uses in wvw, but wolf is convinced it’s not…and that is another discussion altogether.
waraxx, i believe someone edited a post an hour after their OP about the stealth. that still doesn’t detract from my statement about thieves being able to break aggro for the entire party when things get dicey. i played the shaman fractal with 3 thieves and an engi a few weeks ago. i thought it was going to be one of the worst pugs ever, but as it turned out, all 3 used ss and when we got downed, each one would use refuge to deaggro and rez. if that’s not op, then i don’t see how wor/soa can be nerfed. if thieves lose their stealthing effectiveness, i can guarantee you the uproar will be much greater than if guards were nerfed.
as for spy kits, sure everyone has access to them. if there wasn’t a consumable that allowed it, then i would see another thread like this to nerf stealth. if there was a consumable for anti projectiles, then i would NOT see a thread for nerfing it. simple as that. but the game designed allowed stealth for all and not reflection. that doesn’t make it right to kill a mechanic that guardians are(arguably, here in this thread) better at than others. because guardians don’t have stealth as a utility, should we punish thieves and mesmers? i think not. it makes their gameplay unique and i am glad when someone with skill uses stealth in a way that benefits the entire party. just like i’m grateful when i have another guard that takes wor/soa so i can use other utilities.
can i get some clarification on why you want it nerfed? it seems that there is only a benefit to using those utils in pve, as there is no competition between players. if you want a challenge, then i can understand that.
as for wrecking face solo in wvw against 6-10, it is totally doable as a guard. i won’t go too much into detail as you can see for yourself in the guardian subs, but a hammer/scepter//shield guard can jump into a line, kill 2-4 and make it out without dying. while everyone is busy trying to focus that guard down(who is btw, taking zero dmg), the rest of his party can flank and destroy the rest of the disorganized zerg. it’s almost basic guard play in wvw. wor/soa is essential to that. you will need the 10 seconds, believe me.
i don’t need 10sec for running away either, but let me iterate again that for attrition encounters, especially with bridges or bottlenecks or setting up/defending siege, wor is a godsend.
i’m getting off topic here as we’re here to talk about fractals, but i hope you see the huge impact reducing the effectiveness of wor/soa in other parts of the game, just to satisfy an arbitrary need for challenge in ONE aspect of the game, namely fractals.
if you want to simulate more challenge, don’t party with guardians. if you’re a guardian yourself, don’t use the utils.
as for traiting for the usefulness of consecrations, i’m not going to disagree with you on that. untraited, i think that wor works perfectly fine in conjunction with soa. but i’d be hard pressed to have 2 consecrations on my bar just to justify traiting for them, unless my party asked for me to play support. there’s much more i can do with those 10 in virtues(i think of as wasted points).
(edited by kiba.2768)
i just completed fotm 30 in under 1 hr with a mixed comp pug. no doubles of classes. i was the only guardian(don’t look so surprised). i traited accordingly and used my reflections/absorbs and asked for the thief to ss and the mes to feedback when my utils were on cd. no one died.
i see that even though you agree on most of my points, we still disagree on the fact that nerfing anti projectiles on guard for the sake of 1 facet of the game will reduce their effectiveness in other dungeons and wvw. wor is so clutch that i never remove it from my bar unless i’m just running around and want sy for the extra swiftness.
i don’t know if the afk was meant to be hyperbole, but we can’t afk in any fractals, guardian or not.
- shaman floor will kill you. even with regen and regen food
- asura bots will kill you with rockets. they pierce wor
- hammerman’s confusion bolts pierce wor
- bloomhunger’s poison if it misses the wor/soa by a hair, the aoe will still get you
- svanir hail mary of arrows..well i don’t need to say anything about that, do i?
the thing is, if we’re going to plausibly take away or reduce what is arguably the most important thing a guardian brings to fotm, we must take away stealth from thieves, as an example. they can melt the ice wall while everyone else afks. they can deaggro while rezzing.
contrary to what someone above said, guardians do not get stealth while moving. it’s a thief’s/mes’ ability.
guardian damage is not on par with a thief’s(single target, anyway). they have to have some sort of calling card that makes parties want to group with them. just like ele’s have more aoe capability(not for long), would you consider reducing their aoe radius or duration because it makes killing the lava elementals that much easier?
funny you mention this as anet have stated they will be nerfing both ele’s ability to bunker in pvp and nerfing aoe in general.
that’s why i had not for long in parenthesis. as for the wor/soa in wvw…shorter is not better. the fact that you can lay it down and make the battle as flexible as you want is counter intuitive to your argument. btw, when you come across a guard that can stand his own when jumping into a small zerg to disrupt the front line, ask what he’s using. you need to instill confidence in your server mates by breaking their front line and tbh, it’s not easily done without wor/soa, especially when providing cover for retreat after you’ve done your damage or trying to break a deadlock/attrition over a bridge/bottleneck.
one more nitpicky thing- guard’s have target dependent mobility. sword 2, ji and mi need targets. gs3 throws you 600 distance(not sure of the measurement anet uses). hammer does the same thing. i think necros and guards share the same spot for clunky movement.
here’s a thought:
you guys are dissecting guardian’s wor and soa in terms of fractals and yet don’t realize that asking for a nerf on them will drastically affect their ability to perform in wvw and other non fotm areas of the game.
i’m not fanboi’ing both utilities. i’m looking at them from a wider point of view than those in here that want those abilities to have shorter duration/longer cd.
i also find it funny calling for a rebalancing of 2 utilities based on 1 part of the game. there is only pvp and pve. fotm is pve. you can’t possibly ask for a balance in fotm ONLY. it would be pve-wide.
guardian damage is not on par with a thief’s(single target, anyway). they have to have some sort of calling card that makes parties want to group with them. just like ele’s have more aoe capability(not for long), would you consider reducing their aoe radius or duration because it makes killing the lava elementals that much easier?
guardians are one of the most balanced classes. that’s me defending them as a whole.
try running fotm with 5 guardians. sure, no one will go down. but guess what…it takes longer than if you had a mixed party comp and you could still complete without any deaths if everyone knows their profession. i speak from experience with pugs only.
citadel- we would need more information on your upgrade slots in weapons/armor/trinkets. also, is this for pve, wvw, soloing, grouping?
the guardian forums might be a good place to ask. we have similar taste in gear from what i can tell, so here is my general pve/dungeon setup. rhs is adding in an extra 15% crit chance that is not displayed.
[edit]
crit dmg is 79%. weird it won’t display when i hover and printscreen. oh well.

those are indeed banded pauldrons.
Which actually fit right on a human. On a Norn they are absurd. Similar problem with the banded boots
.
I wanted to double check which helmet that is? Has a fantastic Robocop vibe
.
nike- it is the barbaric helm skin
[edit]
khisola- the guild pvp pauldrons are the same skin as the banded. i tried both of them on in the locker and they look identical, even the positioning. it might be your race as a few posters here have mentioned? if you’re a human, maybe it’s your gender or physical build?
(edited by kiba.2768)
for the boots, i went with slalom’s suggestion of banded. the problem i was running into was having too much of one set of gear that matched too well. however, since only the shoulders and boots are from the same set and since they are physically far apart from each other, i feel as if this is more acceptable. plus they are one of the few boots that are knee high. the draconic boots were only mid calf and there was a weird gap between the plating of the thighs and the flange of the draconic boots.
as for the gloves, they are the splint variety, as i feel they look better than the banded, so a slight difference between what donari and i are wearing.
i couldn’t frame a shot correctly(even using the environment to induce a certain zoom) highlighting the leggings and boots, but they are my favorite part of the ensemble. the gradient effect from white to grey to graphite(the gray was a bonus part of the cm leggings) is spectacular
a few more shameless promo shots =]
