I do not think one should leave 6/4/0/0/4 mantra out of the equation. It is just so that phantasms tend to die. A dead phantasm with a long cooldown will do less damage than a faster attacking one that can be recasted faster too…
6/4/0/4/0 will have traited swords and traited wardens, so cooldowns aren’t too bad. Though certainly 3 in Illusions helps, it’s not absolutely critical— depending on what your party is, fights might be over before you have a chance to respawn phants anyway. People used to run 10/30/0/20/10 for more DPS instead of getting the 15 in Illusions, after all.
I wrote up my thoughts on the current options here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Mantras-PvE/first#post3913493 It’s likely that the experts will give us some more researched/qualified opinions soon as well.
Things are still basically in flux, but some things never change. Berserker armor + trinkets is the way to go, and sword mainhand + two offhands is the way to go (offhand sword almost always, focus/pistol for the other one). Phantasm builds are still best. I’m happy to answer questions/offer more advice if you have any after reading the other thread~
Would you recommend me selling my GS to buy exotic sword’s and such? Also what would be your recommended trait build the typical slot skills I should use? I’ll need to get used to using mantras more :O Thanks!
If you soulbound your GS, you won’t be able to sell it. Anyway, it’s a great weapon to have for open world and WvW, so I wouldn’t get rid of it. Try to save up for some rare swords, and then run a few paths of AC, and before long you’ll have enough money for exotics.
For utilities, it depends a lot on the situation.
If you’re running a Mantra build (anything with 6/x), you obviously want Mantras— Recovery for the heal, Resolve and Concentration and Daze for the others, depending on if you need condition cleanse/stun breakers/daze+vuln. The fourth is almost always feedback, which is such a great skill, but can be Null Field or something if you don’t need reflections. In some situations, you sacrifice one of the mantras and its DPS and swap to something like blink if you need it.
For the 2/x builds, it really doesn’t matter too much. Signet of Inspiration is a nice boost to DPS if someone in your party is stacking might (you can use it to double people’s might stacks). Blink might be useful for mobility, depending on the battle. Mantra of Resolve is probably still your best condition cleanse, and is great to have. Null Field is great for boon stripping/ condition cleanse, as is Phantasmal Disenchanter. Portal is useful in some places (CoF p1 boulder skip). You have a lot of great options, but you can also swap one of these into the Mantra builds if necessary as well.
Seems to me that neither phantasmal strength or empowered illusions is worth losing over phantasmal haste.
From a PvE perspective 24053 should get to the highest dps. The average attack speed, and thus damage improvemenet is at ~13.5%, while the 2 trait boosting phantasm dmg both give 15%.
Now it would be interesting to see if 66002 mantra builds do higher total dmg than this phantasm build.
I’m also curious about 6/4/0/4/0 for builds which use focus.
Before the patch, the 6/6/0/0/2 was best when you needed straight DPS and could ignore focus. I’m betting that’ll still be the case, but there are many situations where you want focus and it’s important to find the best focus build as well.
What about Mantra Mastery? Wouldn’t that increase damage by having higher uptime on Mantra charges? Or is it higher damage increase having Fury on phantasms?
That’s a good point, but I think generally the Fury wins out (since, Pyroatheist correct me, there is no other way for Phants to get Fury). Ideally you just use one of your mantra charges per fight so that you keep your full bonus at all times, but especially for when you feedback. In longer fights (Mossman, Archdiviner, Lupi) there are usually invulnerable phases for the boss when you can recharge if necessary without losing damage.
You’ve remind me though that sometimes it might be worth using the XI trait in Dueling, Harmonious Mantras. This gives you an extra charge of the Mantras, so you can use them twice before losing DPS. You only give up Duelist’s Discipline in most situations, which is not a super critical trait, so this can be a good trait. I’ll edit above to reflect this.
You don’t ever build for mantras in PvE.
Sometimes you will need the condition cleanse mantra (Mai Trin is a good example)
Sometimes you will need the stability mantra (harpy fractal trash)
that’s about it.
In this exhibit, someone who has never seen a Lupi proper phase 3 skip.
“that’s about it”
It’s not like the fastest Lupi solo time uses mantras or anything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDePcHC2pd4
Or the fastest Lupi all mesmer group: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnxPbtWkeYc
Or the authority on solo’ing Arah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf-PP2VBBBI
Or solo fractal 80’s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CndcoIwxAcs
Or the CMp3 record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUqUbDEdHuU&feature=youtu.be
Yeah, it must be that all these records are made by scrubs who don’t know how to build for PvE. That they’re all the best examples of gameplay in GW2, and all use Empowering Mantras and three Mantras in most situations, is just a coincidence.

Okay! That all sounds awesome! However I’m a little confused as to what you mean about depending very much on mantras. Do you mean taking Mantra of Pain and Resolve along with say, feedback? What slots skills are you referring to for each of the build (6/6/0/0/2 vs. 2/4/0/4/4)? Which traits exactly are you speaking about?
So when I say a build “depends on mantras,” it means you’re using Empowering Mantras for the +4% per mantra damage. That means you’ll want 3 mantras + feedback on your bar. What 3 mantras you want depends on the situation. You’ll always have Mantra of Recovery— it’s a great heal, and it’s a free 4%. The other two will change between Distraction, Concentration, and Resolve depending on the situation. I prefer Concentration and Resolve in most situations as they’re fairly defensive and good for cleansing yourself/ stunbreaking/ etc. The 3 point minor trait in Domination gives Vulnerability on Daze, which is also quite nice actually, and makes Mantra of Distraction very worthwhile. And of course, you want Feedback as your last skill, since maximizing its damage is the whole point of the build. So in any 6/x/x/x/x build, your goal is to always have as many mantras as possible, but swap around if necessary (for example, I bring blink for Lupi since I am a scrub newb who needs it for phase 3).
Traits for 6/6/0/0/2 builds should be something like:
Domination: III, ???, XI (or whatever Empowering Mantras is)
Dueling: II, IV, (IX, X, or XI) (X is useful for Lupi, Duelist Discipline is probably better in most situations. XI, Harmonious Mantras, might be nice if you find yourself using the Mantras often and losing DPS.)
Illusions: III
Basically, we’re just taking skills which increase damage or reduce cooldowns. Your Master trait in Domination has no good options, really… IV, V, or VI are probably the best options but aren’t very good (this is one reason why people are sad about the move of Empowering Mantras to this trait line… it’s so unrewarding…). You’re not using reflecting wardens, so you might as well use Pistol instead since it’s higher damage. Your other offhand is sword of course. Your main hand is sword.
For a 2/4/0/4/4 build, you’d do:
Domination: III
Dueling: II, IV
Inspiration: II, VIII
Illusions: III, X
Again, basically choosing things which improve cooldowns and damage (though note that here we also improve cooldowns of Feedback with the II in inspiration). The core of this build is the VIII in inspiration, which gives you the reflecting Warden. And of course, for this build, you don’t actually need mantras, so you can use Signet of Ether to quickly double phantasms, or use whatever other utilities you want (ironically I find myself using mostly mantras still since they’re often the best choice). Your weapons are sword/sword and sword/focus.
Other options for the 2/x builds are 2/3/0/5/4 (which loses Dueling IV and some crit chance/damage but gains 15% phant damage from the Inspiration grandmaster minor) or 2/4/0/5/3 (which trades the X in Inspiration for that same Inspiration grandmaster minor).
The 6/4/0/4/0 build you should be able to piece together now, since it’s just a merging of the above builds. I’m actually starting to think that this might be the best “reflect uptime” build, as it might offer the highest DPS of the reflect uptime builds. The difference between this and the various 2/x builds is likely marginal though.
Hope this helps! All that’s certain right now is which build gives maximum reflect damage. What gives the best DPS with good reflect uptime is still being determined.

I know have a functioning NA account and wish to be a mentor here. I’m in as a student. The name is Turbonewb.9345
I can teach on warrior. pretty much everything.
Welcome to NA!!!
What is this post about exactly? I haven’t seen any changes to my Mesmer. 0.o
Except the new traits of course.
Beats me. Nothing has changed for the worse.
gg ignoring people who care about different gameplay modes than you.
Now comparing Phantasm Heavy builds – 2/4/0/5/3 vs. 2/3/0/5/4.
Is it worth sacrificing 4.8% crit chance & 3.3% crit damage for both you and your phantasms (and lower sword cd’s for you) and instead gain 13% dps increase for your swordsmans? In a typical zerk build the DPS split between you and 3 swordsmans is roughly 40%/60% to 50%/50%.
Atm it’s hard to actually test this since there are too many people in HotM constantly interrupting my tests
If you get a chance, frifox, can you also compare 2/4/0/4/4 to these? I’m curious if PH is able to make up for the Phantasmal Strength (though I am betting it probably doesn’t).
I should also note that with the iWarden being as bugged as it is at the moment, some people seem to be favoring the 6/6 setups and avoiding focus altogether because of that. Losing the pull from focus 4 seems pretty drastic though, so I’m not sure if I’m going to go that way.
I never really caught onto the whole Mantra craze in PvE because my guild has always liked me using a plethora of reflects (and I enjoy them too). So I’m curious with the Harmonious/Empowered Mantras changes, what does this build actually look like? (Or what DID it look like) And what are the current thoughts on mantras in PvE?
Mantras and Reflects used to go together very, very well. You could get maximum reflect damage + maximum reflect uptime in one build (the old 0/30 or 10/30 builds). Maximum reflect damage came from Empowering Mantras and 30 in dueling. Maximum reflect uptime came from Signet of Ether and traited iWarden (+ focus 4 + feedback). You could do all that with one build (just swapping the healing skill depending on the situation).
Now, the maximum uptime and maximum damage builds are different. Maximum reflect damage is 6/6/0/0/2, again with Empowering Mantras, and therefore depending very much on mantras. The maximum reflect uptime build is something like 2/4/0/4/4 or 2/4/0/5/3— these don’t depend on mantras at all. These have traited wardens which you can double with Signet of Ether and get 100% coverage on, as before. You could also do a hybrid like 6/4/0/4/0 to get Empowered Mantras + 100% reflect uptime— however this sacrifices 2 points in dueling so its reflect damage is decidedly sub-optimal compared to a 6/6 build. Its DPS might be better than the 2/4 builds, but I’m not sure about this yet.
I should note the 6/6 builds are probably more sword/pistol + sword/sword, and the others are all sword/focus + sword/pistol.
Which one do you take? Depends on the situations. Lupicus, for example, calls for maximum damage on reflects. Alphard calls for maximum reflect uptime. Be dynamic and trait according to the situation. The 6/6 builds are better at single target DPS because of Duelists; the focus builds are better at AoE because of Wardens. There are some interesting tradeoffs at play now, instead of one catch all build— this is annoying, but perhaps a good thing in the long run.

.so they messed up warrior and mesmer… my 2 main classses. great
Wrong lol, mesmer is super strong right now with strength runes and a battle sigil. My gs auto attack is scaling from 1k on first cast to 5k on fifth cast. I am currently running the famous 20/20/0/0/30 build. (PvP)
gs damage number that are appearing on screen are bugged and are tallying all your hit together it not actually hitting for 5k.
Not bugged exactly. It’s just appearing as a single channeled attack because of the rate of fire.
Similar to 100B for warriors. Which also had a habit of confusing people into thinking they were doing more damage than they actually were.
You people are out of your kittening minds. If you’re using Mantras on a Mesmer, you’re playing the class wrong. Mantras blow, they always have and they always will. I can’t believe the amount of people in here freaking out over a freakin’ MANTRA change. Do yourselves a favor, go with a 10/30/0/0/30 max DPS shatter build and thank me later.
Bit of a definitive statement? Maybe you mean in PvE, in which case I can’t really comment, but mantras are great for roaming in WvW. Like Osi said, combining the condition cleanse and healing mantra with harmonious mantras and healers purity rids mesmers of our main weakness : conditions.
A max dps shatter build on the other hand, lacks a lot of survivability.
He’s definitely not talking about PvE, because all of the top speed-runners in the game have been using mantras for months.
I’m still running all the numbers for the builds now that Sigil of Strength and Runes of Strength got buffed, but my initial recommendations for builds are…
Dagger/Focus
- Main sigils for night are Night/Force in groups that max might, Night/Strength otherwise
- Main sigils for day are Force/Strength or Force/Accuracy
- Runes are still Scholar’s
- For Assassin’s armor, use precision/ferocity food
- For other armor, use power/precision food
- Stack bloodlust
Scepter-Hammer
- Main sigils for night are Night/Force
- Main sigils for day are Force/Accuracy or Force/Battle
- Runes are Strength, but Scholar’s is still competitive
- Use power/ferocity food
- Stack bloodlust unless you have 0 points in air
Staff
- Main sigils for night are Night/Force
- Main sigils for day are Force/Accuracy
- Runes are Scholar’s
- Use precision/ferocity or power/precision food
- Stack bloodlust if you have 6 points in air, perception if you have 2 or fewer points, and whichever at 4 points.
I’ll work on full updates to all the builds over the next week or so.
I’m really enjoying the Dagger mainhand changes, I hope the math will also be favourable for D/F and not just my feeling about it. Looking forward to your updated guides and thank you for all the work you and your friends do for the PvE-community!
Just one question to anyone who can answer it: How do you stack bloodlust/perception now-a-days? Whenever I unequip the stacking weapon I lose my stacks like intended, I couldn’t work around it with a Sigil on my underwater weapons, besides that I can’t think of any other work-around.
If so would you recommend Night/Force + Force/Accuracy or Night/Bloodlust + Force/Bloodlust?
Put the stacking sigil on your underwater weapon— this works. Make sure it’s of the same type as your main stacking sigil, and note you can’t double stack anymore with d/f or s/f or whatever. So just stack with one of those, get to full stacks, and replace it— the underwater weapon should hold it.
Just did a full AC run- Got kholer chest for p1+p2, but not p3 o.o
Look for your chest in HotW. Maybe they put it there for the sake of consistency…
ahaahahaahaha A++
I totally felt the nerf today.
So I’m at Lupi on Mes, full ascended everything, 25 stacks perception then swapping to sword undead/focus force, 6/4/0/0/4, 3 mantras and 3 illusions up, using butternut curry, wielding a LH, 25 vuln on Lupi and fury + disc banner on me, TW’ing just after the invuln into phase 2, and I hit feedback thinking “everything’s great, I’m at 100% crit chance, maximum modifiers.” ….. …… …..
lowest feedback dmg I have ever seen. WTF?
6/6/0/0/2 for more crit damage!
But yeah, that stinks. Any idea how much lower it was compared to the previous normals?
I think most of the people that are happy are the PvP and WvW players. There’s quite a few nice changes there, even if the IE fix is still missing after all these months.
The sudden, unexplained, and more or less undocumented change of Empowering Mantras for PvE players is very frustrating— I’d like to ask the WvW/PvP players to consider how upset they would be if a crucial trait got moved into a completely unused trait line with no warning. It’s an emotional reaction to be upset by it, sure, but it definitely is not ideal for this to be done in this way.
For PvE, things like the ferocity scaling in low level dungeons actually mean that we’re still doing more damage than before the patch, even with different builds than before. Things like the trait changing in dungeons means that we can swap our builds to the ideal one for the situation at hand (basically selecting between reflect uptime and reflect damage), so it’s not a huge loss compare to the old builds (just more clicking because of the need to swap). At least this means we have a strong, dynamic play style that’s adjustable and interesting, compared to the new warrior meta which is basically “11111111.”
:3 Can confirm, our mes was freaking out today.
“Mah wardens, look at mah wardens doin’ nuthin’! Kitten.”
“Do you have feedback?”
“Np, I got wardens and signet”…
…
/uses smoke screen
I know I’m a horrible person, but it always makes me giggle to see a warden walking up an ascalonian archer, staring at them; then a warrior comes and
RUUUUUSHHHH
you make mesmers cry, deSade
It’s plenty viable for open world content, where it had always excelled. Still not the best in dungeons.
But look how pretty.
Nice! What top / shoulders/ legs is that?
You know you have more than 2 sets of weapons equipped at any time, right?
(put a bloodlust sigil in your underwater weapon)
I think that only works on maps with underwater mobs. When you move into an instance it is reset?
Nope, it works in instances. Just ran a few dungeons with this, with perception stacking on my ele and bloodlust on my warrior.
Funnily enough, it seems like it’s a reverse nerf when it comes to low level dungeons. Even mediocre dps pugs will output more than enough to trivialize all the AC bosses.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Zerker-was-buffed-in-numerous-zones-PvE/
Well that explains it, Thanks.
We were saying how basically everything felt the same or faster, this explains the faster, and explains why some felt the same-ish. The higher level ones weren’t really any faster, but the lower level ones were, AC is a joke now. 1 fiery rush = dead spider queen, 1 rush = dead gravelings, then on to the burrow/hodgins part. Just… wow.
Overall I felt the dungeon tour last night was easier than ever before. I can’t say I felt at a disadvantage compared to previous in any area.
The difference between easy and hard dungeons is going to be even bigger now.
Just ran AC with my group. We 4-manned it significantly faster than we used to 5-man it. Ghost Eater went down in one rush from ele + thief, so did Howling King. Feels like the Spider Queen is at half HP before I finish my might rotation. Wowow.
to be honest, i would avoid these like the plauge
been hearing of people scamming (get the money close the instance) and honestly i’d bet that a good percent of them have exploited thier way to the finish to save money (NOT SAYING EVERYONE DOES IT), when some1 claims the run was “legit” it just raises the question since its easy to say that it was.
It’s fairly easy to check. Is there a waypoint at Lupi? If not, he’s not dead, so the path was exploited. Done.
I’m actually considering swapping scholar for strength on my guardian.
Since now you will mostly need to have at least 1 weapon equipped with bloodlust on it, the whole 2h + 1h/offhand swapping thing doesn’t work so well since greatsword with force/night is probably higher dps than 1h/offhand with night/bloodlust.So you may as well take the staff along for prebuffs. 15/16 second 12 might empower for pugs? Sounds good.
You know you have more than 2 sets of weapons equipped at any time, right?
(put a bloodlust sigil in your underwater weapon)
Haven’t really noticed it yet.
Question about the Warrior build. If I run 4/6/0/4/0. Is it a DPS increase or decrease to use Eviscerate? And what about instead of Deep Strikes taking the trait that gives perma-swiftness if your group make lack it to keep that 1% damage increase
He addresses this in the video. In short, use eviscerate in your DPS rotation (once it is recharged and off cooldown). If you have a ranger in your party providing spotter, which raises your precision, replace Deep Strikes with the swiftness thing as you said. Otherwise Deep Strikes is better.
As far as I can see the only trait you can slot into master-level domination trait that does anything useful at all in PvE is the extra mind wrack damage. Not a very good trait in PvE since you don’t shatter much but seems better than the others.
I guess we can use it as a finisher when bosses are almost dead? :\
Out of curiosity, what traits do people select when going for 6 in domination? III and XI are obvious, but the last one is so… lackluster. The best one seems to be V (cripple on clone death), but that’s a huge waste in a power phantasm build. I almost prefer going 2/0/0/4/4 just because I like all the traits I select there.
Strength is nice with battle, I must admit.
Scholar still is probably going to be useful.
Depressing.
Don’t forget we now can re-trait between encounters.
Why can’t we use 6/6/0/0/2 as new full dps?
It will depend on the group, but if things are dying fast I don’t think you have to go 4 in Illusions.
This was full DPS in the past, and worked well. I have a feeling that the Phantasmal Haste, if it’s really working, will be better than 2 more points in dueling, but that could be wrong. I guess you could get Duelist’s Discipline at Dueling 6 now, but that’s pretty disappointing as a grandmaster.
Empowering Mantras on Mesmer moved to useless trait line (Domination) -> rip mesmers forever
It’s not that bad. If indeed they did fix Phantasmal Haste so it works with Wardens and Swordsmen (I haven’t tested yet) and with the Empowering/Harmonic Mantra swap, Mesmers can now go 6/4/0/0/4 when focus reflects aren’t needed, and 6/4/0/4/0 when they are needed.
Yeah, in retrospect moving things around a bit would be possible like you say. But with the New Improved Warden Bugs, it’s just even more frustrating.
Maybe 2/4/0/4/4? This can be an option when you need reflects (assuming we figure out whether warden is reflecting from all targets properly), and then 6/4/0/0/4 for “full dps” in other situations.
Thanks for testing frifox. How ridiculous.
Mesmer ded. Everyone rerolls guardian!
Time to move that ascended gear to other classes. -_-
warden is now even worse, it only reflect the target you casted it on. so its kinda pretty much useless. cast a warden on 2 turrets, it only reflects one.
fail.
holy crap, can anyone confirm? even harder fail if this is true.
It’s been noted in several places, but Harmonious Mantras and Empowering Mantras were swapped.
Mesmer clones doesn’t show the outfit that the mesmer is wearing, but the equipped gear. What is plain stupid if it’s intended.
This is some A++ quality control
This change basically just completely destroyed mesmers in PvE. Empowering Mantras was pretty much the only thing that made us not completely terrible.
Assuming phaste is fixed I think I’ll try 2/4/0/4/4 or 6/4/0/0/4 (no reflect), but I suspect the correct build may be to roll guardian.
Yes, this is pretty much correct.
Oh dear phant swordsmen works with phant haste now. I now predict quite a bit more phantasm mesmers in duels zzz. But yea warden still doesn’t work completely which really sucks considering I love using focus
. Also, I didn’t see any fixes for ielasticity. Could someone tell us if they stealth fixed it because that’s really huge if they did.
Edit: Not sure if anyone saw this, but masterful reflection now works with signets. That’s such a HUGE quality of life change for signet Mesmers. Guess I gotta go try out signet mes again in pvp along with like 3 other builds haha. and Pyro, Portal has a range indicator now, thank god (forget how long we’ve told anet we have needed that but whatever!)
kitten , warden still doesn’t work either? More bad news after bad.
Considering how many things they silently patch in dungeons without ever noting it in the patch notes (and almost always these are changes of ‘dubious’ value), I wouldn’t be surprised if they just forgot to list it or don’t care to.
rip ferocity, always in our hearts
Empowering Mantras is now a grandmaster domination trait. So mesmer is basically kittened.
It actually makes 6/6/0/0/2 slightly better, and this was always the “maximum DPS” option for mesmer anyway. But it makes the more common reflection + focus based builds really bad.
lol
Maybe they replaced the ac troll with the hotw troll. Someone go confirm it for me.
That would be hilarious if it were true
It’s true. Unfortunately it’s not hilarious, it’s extremely sad
wow, that’s… incredible. just wow.
Empowering Mantras on Mesmer moved to useless trait line (Domination) -> rip mesmers forever
rip mesmers
What a pain in the kitten . This is going to be a large hit to DPS for most builds. How annoying.
Don’t forget the ferocity change for icing on the cake <3
Considering that crit damage, and 30 in dueling, was the bread and butter of the class’s DPS (with Feedback), this is just
I guess 3/4/0/5/4 is the new best option, or something.
rip mesmers
What a pain in the kitten . This is going to be a large hit to DPS for most builds. How annoying.
