At least make it so small groups of 2-3 can join as a party.

You’re halfway to a tourney team. Just find another small group of friends and enter free tournament. Or enter with just you two and it will find another group of 3 that need 2 and it will pair you up.

small correction, tourneys are 5v5 so you have 3 others on your team that are probably doing what you were doing, namely playing with their friends.

Ulari I’m no developer, and maybe your idea is feasible, but I think it makes too many assumptions about how to rate teams, and may have a high chance to incorrectly match players up. I think you are over-engineering the solution and introducing too many new problems.

my opinions:

I would think downed state’s main purpose is to help counter glass cannon spikes. Stay with a teammate and if they spike you out, you’re not dead yet but they’ve used up their burst and your teammate can kill them/res you.

It is not especially useful in 1v1 situations because if you’re down there’s no one to save you.

In team fights the downed state makes sense. It makes sense why stability is so important. It makes sense why the finish animation is as long as it is. It makes sense why the #3 downed skill has the recharge that it does. You could almost say that a significant portion of the game is balanced around the “O no we have a downed player quick interrupt those finishers” meta game. And it is a meta game; a game within our game.

Sure you could remove downed state skills and just allow people to res you, but that’s pretty silly. You’re not dead — you’re downed. You should have some ability to defend yourself and buy time for your team to come rescue you.

In conclusion: purpose of downed state is to create a focal point in team fights and help counter (but not invalidate) glass cannons.

A lot of crying going on here. The game is as the game is. It is reasonably fair and you can still win after losing both boss boosts if your team is skilled. Then again, skilled players don’t make a habit of crying about how the game should be simpler. They just learn how to win. Haku already gave some tips about how to play forest, I suggest everyone read them again.

Thing about downed state is, it’s not about you and your 1v1, because yes if you down someone, you will almost certainly finish them as well — but at soon as you get into a group situation the downed state makes sense. Your teammate goes down and your entire team nearby switch into “interrupt mode” looking for anyone trying to finish your teammate as someone tries to revive him and their team is trying to kill the guy reviving and your team is trying to keep people off of him and everyone is popping their stabilities and blowing their elites just to try and decide through combat if this poor downed kitten will live or die.

Let me explain where Quickness breaks the game. You have two types of damage, burst damage and sustained damage. The game is balanced around these two damage types whilst factoring in survivability.

Let’s just stop right here for a second. The game is not “balanced around these two damage types”. The game is actually balanced around the same things we’ve been hearing about since the game’s release, namely damage, support, and control. Yes, sustained and burst damage need to be balanced but they are two halves of a single element in the larger equation for balance. There are scores of ways to deal with quickness glass cannons.

I was frustrated with this at first as well, but I believe it’s simply a matter of the developers not wanting to encourage groups of people moving together throughout the map capping points. In gw1 there was a game mode called Alliance battles which was essentially a 12v12 point capture pvp. Most players simply rotated around the maps in large groups capping as they went. It was very stale and boring imo. By limiting the max people that can cap a point to 1 I think it encourages the rest of the team to move on and do other things while 1 person stays to cap.

tl;dr: “Play now” button needs to strongly prioritize servers with player imbalances (very possible it does this already) and be put in a super obvious place like stuck to the side of the screen when in the heart of the mists. Keep everything else the same. Problem = largely solved.

I sympathize with your concerns OP, but like Xahz I think your solution is not appropriate. I don’t understand why we have this “server browser” interface to “just get me into akittengame”, particularly when lopsided team player counts (even by 1 player) have such a strong impact on team success. I’d prefer a system that by default inserts players into teams that need people, and only if you really must do so, you can search for a particular server to join. What we have now instead is a system that tempts players first into joining any server they can click on, and has a small “play now” queue button in the bottom left of the server browser, which is backwards imo.

Probably the simplest solution that would have the greatest effect on this problem is a super obvious “play now” button (such as always on the right of the screen in gw1 random arenas) that 99% of people could click on without moving an inch in heart of the mists, and retain the “server browser” npc if people want to select a specific server for other reasons (like attempting to play with friends on a particular server or whatever).

The bottom line to this whole argument is that if ANY class can kill you in less than 5 seconds it needs fixed. I want tactical skilled gameplay and insta-gib builds are anything but. The entire idea that if you don’t dodge 1 attack you die is stupid, plain and simple. Dodge should be used to gain the upper hand in a battle of attrition. You dodge the big hitting attacks enough then you’re going to win the battle. If you don’t dodge then you take damage. The one that can mitigate the most damage through dodging, CC, healing, etc while damaging the opponent wins.

Well, I guess that’s /thread then, huh? Now that you’ve drawn the line in the sand the developers will read your post and suddenly have a glorious revelation about game design.

“Guild Wars 2, according to Distaste: No one can die quickly! Everyone will die slowly! Battles should not have any element which requires sub-second reactions! Quick-thinking is for losers! Also, what are stun-breakers?”

You have to understand that the game is not only you and your friends playing, there are other people as well. If hot-join spvp allowed you to “play with your friends” on the same team easily, what do you suppose more organized and serious minded players would do with it? The common complaint against tournament play is that “it’s too hard and we lose all the time to super serious teams” — which is exactly what hot-join spvp would turn into if it was easy to collect people on one particular team.

Stomping isn’t a function of your skill, it’s a function of how much access your profession has to blocking, stealthing or stability.

If there’s a class that doesn’t have access to any skill that can aid with stomping, I’d like to know about it.

I’m about 99% certain that /map is exactly what it says it is, map chat for both teams. So, I really don’t recommend posting your strategies in map chat during a match. /team is the appropriate chat channel, and yes it does work, but I guess people just aren’t responding to you so far.

I can’t speak to transmuting armor skins, but I know you can get 8+ slot bags you can use in pve. I’ve gotten 2 of the 10 slot ones from rank 10 chests and they’ve been useful. But you’ve mostly understood all there is to know about pve vs pvp: it’s separate and for the sole purpose of skill-based (not gear based) competitive combat.

Arena.net Please remove downed mode form PvP but keep it in PvE.

Downed mode takes away so much much reward for skill. Lets say that you ju are in a 2v1 you down one but the guys downed mode and the other guy kill you instantly… If there wasn’t a downed mode good players would be rewarded better.

I didn’t want to keep posting on this thread like this, but his complaint could have been copy/pasted from every other person that has ever complained about the downed state since the betas. I’d bet money every single one of them ran glass cannons that spike 1 target “and the other guy kill you instantly”. The downed state was probably initially designed to counter exactly these types of builds.

All “pull” effects in game are also interrupts. It’s to stop the stomp.

Yeah because what we do now is super deep
-mash 1 until they come to finish you
-interrupt their stomp
-cast your 3rd spell when it is up
-revive yourself if no enemies are around

It’s actually your teammates that are having the heart attacks trying to interrupt stomps on you. Then it’s the enemy team that escalates their game to try to push the stomp through. The downed player has little say in the matter.

I’m not a fan of the turrets either, but I’ve never felt particularly kittened by the lack o weapon swap. I guess you could look at it another way: you could equip 2 weapon kits and have more skills than other classes (excluding elementalists) in fights. The engineer’s theme is similar to the elementalist’s with its versatility, but higher armor and a stronger focus on support/crowd control (seems this way to me anyway).

Edit: however, yes. need auto attack to be saved on kit swap, my fingers demand it.

This is where I concluded that your opinion was silly. Excluding Mesmer and Thief—in the worst case scenario where you don’t have quickness/stealth/etc, and even assuming they use their cc ability at the last possible millisecond to buy time, you still have enough time to walk back over and finish them before their number 3 recharges. That’s by design. This is, however, much more difficult in a team fight when their team protects them from stomps, but that’s also by design, and creates a new dynamic to fights that I think is very welcome. You should bring some kind of invulnerability or whatever to help you with these stomps, its part of the dynamic of the fight (and they are useful abilities to have anyway). Yes thief and mesmer downed are annoying, maybe a little bit too annoying, but it should be that way. It should be just barely difficult enough so that solo you usually get the stomp, but if they have their team they may rally. If you brought your appropriate utility skill to facilitate stomping then it’s nearly guaranteed however.

In general I tend to doubt that “it’s the build” in these situations, usually it’s much more a question of skill. Did you dodge that burst from that warrior, did you block that heartseeker from the thief, are you removing conditions, etc. Yes, your build matters, but your dodges matter more when talking about getting focus fired. The “time to react” as it were, is not when you’ve been stunned and are taking a pounding, but before. Many people run “glass cannon” builds that do stupidly insane amounts of damage, but they sacrifice a great deal of toughness in order to do it. They generally begin with a stun and then unload on you. So, bring a stun breaker. Watch the field. See who is joining the fight. When you see the thief coming, get ready to dodge, or failing that get ready to block or use your stun breaker. Also it sounds like you’ve taken a lot of “selfish” damage reduction skills and have low damage. In a fight how are you going to help your team win? By not dying? Even if you manage to survive the longest, if you aren’t supporting your team or contributing to damage on targets then maybe you should reconsider your “strategy”. And lastly it sounds like you are standing around auto attacking some enemy and continue to not do much as you are being focus fired, as if your innate guardian “tankyness” would prevent you from dying without you doing actively anything. Doesn’t work like that. You have to actively prevent incoming damage or you’re just a punching bag.

Not sure what op is talking about. Start a roster for the free tourney with your friend and yourself and you will get matched into a team that needs 2 people. I enter free tourneys by myself sometimes since pug groups can take a while.
