The game is designed to have high risk/high reward builds available. GW1 was also like this. Millisecond reaction times were required, particularly of monks. This is not your typical mmo pvp combat. It’s true quickness like we have now did not exist in gw1, however its playstyle did exist, not only at the team level but also at individual.

Just to give an example there were warriors or assassins with hammer and daggers that would perform their attack chains and literally give you no time to react or attack back (because you were permanently on the ground). If you found this in random arenas, you were simply unable to do anything until a teammate got on them to help you, or you were intelligent and slotted a defensive skill to break their chain. Again, here in gw2, the same mentality is going into game design: if none of your skills can break you out of those situations, you just need to accept the fact that you will lose to them. (aka bring stunbreak)

I think there only need to be 2 changes to downed state.

  • thief needs 1 extra second recharge to his #3 ability
  • ele needs some help, cause those poor kittens can’t do anything when they’re downed.

edit: would be cool to have a kind of ride the lightning #2 ability on ele. Like the thief teleport but no stealth and a clear path to his next spot.

So only Warrior is viable anymore in pvp?

@Rell, yes. That’s true. I was saying that’s what I didn’t like exactly because it creates barriers to finding more people. GW1 system was very different and better, and I’d rather have that, if only for in heart of the mists. I realize this may never happen.

Paid tournaments use those tournament tickets, yes. I haven’t seen any mention as to how many would be needed to enter.

Exploit is when you find an enemy capping your node on foefire before timer hits 5 seconds. Or teleporting from the ground just below the treb in Kyhlo up, and back down constantly during a fight.

I don’t recall anything being said about any death-match style pvp at all. In fact I vaguely remember a game dev saying that style of pvp wasn’t going to work well in gw2. Probably because if you have no dedicated support class and the only objective is to kill… why would you run anything other than max damage glass cannon? That was the whole reason they chose conquest as main pvp type, to stress smaller skirmishes over resources and only occasionally having larger fights.

I agree. I am much more in favor of splitting by language districts in gw1. It was a simpler and more elegant solution. In my opinion pve should have been done this way as well, but really the pvpers are most hurt by it because they are a smaller percent of the population. I’m on a pvp-oriented server, and it boggles my mind that I have so much trouble forming a tourny party.

Mesmer does not “teleport all around and decoy” They have 1 tele/decoy and it’s plain as day which the real mesmer is.

Awarding glory to player in the winning team would definitly be totally so simple :p
Why would you want to get higher glory rank anyway? It doesnt give any benefits only match you against higher ranks players.

  • lol glory does not match-make at all
  • higher glory rank gives you access to cooler gear
  • it may not be so simple to “just give more glory” but it seems to be the least complicated solution to change spvp from zerg to try-to-win

@Sprawl I don’t think you can tell me how much glory I am getting. I often place 1st on my team and sometimes on the server. Sometimes I go with the zerg, but when they get too caught up in the fighting it’s best to just leave them.

To help fix the lack of interest in winning spvp matches, they should just give a higher glory bonus for winning. They’ve mostly fixed the autobalance issues they were having, so I think now they need to give people incentive to help their team win.

You can only form tournament parties with people from your region. You fight vs any region in spvp. Im not sure about other details such as who you fight in tournys, but I think you only fight within your region as well.

@Hopeless, yes. The only other way to prevent the res is to get a stomp off immediately. You’ll need stability to do this.

@tarcheg “broken” is a very relative conclusion in this discussion. If downed state is unfair, then it is broken. If it appears unfair, then it might be broken. But to say it’s broken because you dislike how it functions is a meaningless statement. I guess the heart of the discussion is that I just play the game the way it is. I leave the discussion of balancing to the devs because they are in a better position to assess the overall situation.

Well, I usually do defend a point for a bit. I consider it practice for tourneys. Not the greatest thing for glory gain, but I’m still getting something out of it.

Maybe this change to downed state so it deals more damage was to further discourage people from running glass cannons.

@Masakari that’s pretty dumb. There will be fewer bads playing paid tourneys because good players have greater access to tickets. Which means consequently it will be easier to play free tourneys (even if just by a little bit) and casual players will have an easier time there.

Blog post was a nice confirmation of vague information we had previously. I was hoping for more exciting announcement, but it’s ok like this too.

A while back I stopped playing for a week and was checking out Torchlight 2 (great game) I suggest to others if the game is not up to your standards just take a small break and check back in every few days.

I think the order they have is a good one. Many of us are waiting for ratings but I think they need a new kind of tournament structure that takes rating into account. I don’t see rating fitting into free/paid tournaments. Jon did mention that there were bigger pvp competitions in the works and I suspect that these will have rating tied to them.

I maintain that the people who complain so loudly about downed state are the ones that don’t fully equip themselves to handle it. It is an important part of the game, and ignoring it until you can’t avoid it will only cause you grief.

You can revive faster than you can finish

Only by like half a second. They are comparable, at least, which should indicate that you should use some cc to secure a stomp/res.

Abilities to ensure revives and prevent them are not equally shared, yet the game is decided by 1on1 and 2on2 encounters, which obviously are bound to see any combination of classes engaging in them

There are multiple other ways to support your team in group fights to help secure a stomp/res than being the one to actually do it. I’ll ignore that you mentioned 1v1, since it’s unnecessary to use any extra skills there.

TTD[own] is often lower than TTK[ill] even, when nobody else is present

This is pretty irrelevant. It takes less than 10 seconds in the worst case scenario to finish someone. If they have an ally incoming, then this would be a great opportunity to pop a stability to save time.

When a player is downed, the focus shifts away from the actually ongoing fight and to 95% to the downed target

I’m not seeing this as a problem… now the fight has an extra dimension, and the stakes are higher.

There are many more problems.

I don’t mean to be snarky — though I’m sure it may seem that way — but all of your complaints are pretty weak, in my (not so important) opinion.

I don’t understand the previous two posters. It’s like we’re playing different games or something. Downed state is excellent. Sure, it’s not great when you die alone, but that’s kind of your fault though, right? And if it’s messing with your mojo when you’re trying to kill someone and their teammate gets them up I say fair play.

Quickness is not a problem at all. I don’t know what all of you are talking about when you say that they shouldn’t reduce damage but instead remove quickness. With quickness, there is a few seconds when thieves deal loads of damage. You prepare for these spikes. After it’s over, they have low damage, and that is the time a balanced class turns the tide of the fight.

They can’t and won’t remove it. It is very deeply linked to those burst professions and their style of play. You just need to learn to play vs them.

If it’s any consolation to those trying to run balanced builds in spvp, I’d urge you to keep trying to find a good build. I have been playing engineer for a while, and I think I’ve come across a great build that suits my style of play and allows me to consistently place top of my team.

It’s kind of a roaming support character with heavy defense (3k armor) low-moderate damage, and very good team healing. I’ve got 2 stun breakers (and their toolbelt skills which are great) and I use the elixir gun and rifle. I can pretty easily solo any of these burst classes, and after a while of playing I notice people running away when they see me. I can bunker a point for a while if it’s needed, I can slip away from fights that are going badly, I have a reasonable about of damage (especially against all these silly glass cannons) and my rifle chews thieves and warriors for breakfast. I am the resmaster 5000 and I often save allies at the last second who are about to get stomped, I cc bursters off my allies, I cap points solo and hold them vs 2 people for a bit. etc etc etc.

This is only 1 build from 1 profession, but I would urge people to consider their utility slots not as more damage, but as defensive skill slots for yourself and teammates. You really only need a moderate, sustained amount of damage to kill these burst classes, the more important thing is staying alive.

I think it is a bit naive to imagine a game where everything is roses and rainbows and anyone can take any skill they like and be competitive in pvp. Most people are more comfortable with how MMO’s have been played for a while now. GW2 is a bit different. You can be competitive or not, choice is yours mate.

Has everyone forgotten what a stunbreaker is? If you’re running a balanced build and you have your stunbreak available you shouldn’t die in 3seconds. For the record, 3 seconds is really a small eternity, and allows a great deal of time to break stun, dodge and assess the situation.

edit: and I know immobility is popular, but every class has some kind of block or damage mitigation you can use.

Riellan, let me explain something very quickly.

The hitboxes, the animation durations, the distance moved during a dodge… they’re the same for all races. Because the asura is small, it seems like they are moving further and moving faster, but it’s just your brain playing tricks on you.

Other complaints about visibility are still at least debatable.
