you can join tpvp with a partial roster (just you and your friend) and you will get matched with a team needing 2 people.
In pve I lack motivation to progress. The personal story feels inadequate and trivial because I am still forced to grind to reach the recommended levels for each quest.
I need a direction to go in, a path to follow. I liked the missions from gw1 very much. Each was a unique experience, and for the most part you could level your character and experience the game in a linear fashion if that’s all you cared about. I don’t really care if others think that I should be satisfied with the free-roaming qualities of gw2 pve — I do enjoy it however — but it is not motivating enough in my opinion. I appreciate all the work that was done to create this large landscape, and I wish I could experience more of it, but I can’t find it in me to level my character past 50. In particular, it feels like I am just going to each area and grinding hearts out (or exploring the zone for xp, or whatever). I am not on an adventure, I am just very plainly performing tasks to gain xp so that I can move to the next area and repeat.
Here is my suggestion then:
Some system for leading you between dynamic events through zones. Being either dynamic events in their own right, or simply “quests” that would lead you to a nearby event that is about to start. When I say “nearby” i mean also into the next zone. Following these quest/event chains would take you through much of the world of gw2 and be sufficient to bring you to level 80. It should be a system to show you around the game in between personal story quests. Currently it feels like I am running around zones looking for things to give me xp (like dynamic events) and I am very aware of it.
Thanks for reading.
i’ve been winning 1st place in free tourneys frequently now since the paid tourneys, whereas before it was uncommon. We are starting to do a few paid tourneys but we get smashed in 2nd round. I’d say there has been a shift.
Kimbald I understand the discussion you’d like to have, but all proposals so far to change the boss mechanic have only reduced its dynamic to “each team gets their boss 95% of the time” Which is to say no team can ever gain an advantage, which then begs the question “why have bosses at all”.
The mechanic is fine. People that dislike it usually don’t plan on preventing or using it during matches and get mad when they feel cheated out of their points. You knew the mechanic, you knew what the enemy would do. Next time prepare better. It’s not at all impossible or even particularly difficult to stop an incoming thief. You just have to want to win.
The first step in becoming a top player is the realization that playing to win means doing whatever most increases your chances of winning. The game knows no rules of “honor” or of “cheapness.” The game only knows winning and losing.
This expands on my point:
http://www.sirlin.net/articles/playing-to-win-part-1.html
There are no “cheap” tactics, only tactics you don’t fully take advantage of or prepare for.
@Chris: There are people that get good and play the game with strategies for every advantage possible. Then there are people that don’t want to win, but just play however they want.
100b warriors, flamethrower engineers, anything with mass daze at last second to get last hit, or really anything with quickness — pop it at last second and gg
edit: there was a ranger skill with bow that did rapid attacks in short time. anything like that would be good
Hey Milo,
Thanks for the reply. The situation I am referring to seems to happen all the time at GY or Keep. The initial rush always seems to end up being 3v3/4v4 and the other team seem to focus fire us down one by one and we end up chasing after an unkillable objective. I’m glad to see you suggest going after dps/glass cannons first as this is what I was leaning towards.
If you are not doing well in teamfights remember to call the target and also mention it in voip for your team. If you are still not doing well maybe you should try adjusting your classes or builds to have more support/cc.
What about healing elementalist or guardian/engineer bunker? I have encountering this 2 man setup more and more on nodes and am finding it very hard to grab a kill on either before the rest of the other team arrive as backup.
It’s impossible to say specifically what you should do. If you can’t take them, stop trying because it’s only a waste of time. Let them sit there and bunker alone and now it’s like a 5v4 fight everywhere else in your favor. Alternatively if you really need to take the point make sure you take another teammate with you. If you guys still can’t take the node then consider if your builds are set up properly for “bunker-busting”. You will need boon strips for eles and guardians and in general ranged condi dmg works well on guardians and engineers. Or — do what I do (i am engineer however) and bing so much cc knockbacks that you can take the node from the bunker without even killing him (difficult on guardians that spam stability). Another idea is if you can kill the bunker solo, but it just takes some time, then have another roamer teammate prepare for it and intercept their roamer to give you time.
Moxrox has done very little tpvp….
Anyway OP all of this is assuming you’re doing tpvp because spvp is crap:
You didn’t mention who controls the point, but I will assume the enemy does. Also you didn’t mention how many from your team are there.. it sounds like you’re assaulting a node with 5 enemies on it (wtf?) alone (wtf?), but whatever.
These things can get kinda complicated, but it’s not all about “how do i beat that” but oftentimes it’s the big picture you need to think about.
If:
- the enemy controls the point
- the enemy has substantial defense there
- the enemy controls more nodes than you
then just don’t go there. It’s a waste of time. The enemy will just rack up points.
If the node is neutral then try to keep it that way or even cap it if you are not overwhelmed. If you control the node then stay on it so they don’t neutralize it.
If you are actually supposed to be fighting there, then your next question is who to target:
Target their damage. Thieves, mesmers, etc. Anything that is glassy needs to be priority #1. Call the target and have your teammates focus fire.
It’s difficult to decipher if you’re talking about spvp or tpvp — they are very different games.
Most of what you said is probably true for spvp right now. The game is balanced for tpvp however and that is a very different story. Balanced builds are common sight in tpvp organized teams for their teamplay support in bigger fights. I run a balanced / almost bunker engineer and I’ve been very successful in helping my team. I can hold a point for a little while, or do surprising damage pretty quickly. I assault enemy nodes and cc bunkers off their point to cap it, even if I don’t kill the bunker (not everything is about killing). Etc etc. I’d consider my build more of a balanced character because of the way I play it, not necessarily because of how it’s built.
It is probably a delicate balancing act. If they lower the entry fee too much, you will have entire paid tournaments of baddies. Maybe there are 1-2 good teams in there. Now the entire thing was easy instead of “elite”. These paid tournaments are meant to be fiercely competitive and for top players only.
The main reason I say healthbars + stats effects should be on the characters is because they’ve given a notable focus on not relying on the UI, and instead looking in the game for information. So I’m just running with that. It would be even greater immersion I think if we could directly see on characters what’s going on. It may even be good enough to eliminate the “target” info that is a separate ui section so we focus even more on the action. It’s not big deal for me though, just thought it would be nice
Yes, same here.
It lacks a few things but the core is sound.
Where did you get the idea that an ele is a “burst damage class”?
Where have been for the past 15 years of mmo gaming, pls find me another mmo with Mage Tanks
Not to mention it’s common sense that a low hp low armor class SHOULDN’T BE IN A TANK ROLE!
Next time you can’t kill an ele you should remember this isn’t “every other game”.
Where did you get the idea that an ele is a “burst damage class”?
Melee is more susceptible to cc. Caster can do more dps unhindered.
Stomps are important. Dps is, too. Ele can’t be dpsed basically. In addition to the best downed mobility.
I don’t get what all the kittening is about.
Their health resets.
good tips hackks
this happened in gw1 as well. the idea is they would have a bot team and try to sync their real team to fight them so they get a free win. (probably)
this has been discussed before. the real problem is that people get butt-hurt when their boss is stolen and it never occurs to them to try and plan to prevent it — or god forbid actually try it themselves. there would be no point to having bosses that would be taken only by their side’s team.
“play now” button tries to put you in a server with others of similar glory rank
I strongly agree. Jon had responded to me previously saying that it will remain like this because of lag issues, and there was no information if/when it was going to be changed.
i’ve seen 3-4 thief teams in tpvp… they (may) gain the upper hand in the first minute, but afterwards they can’t hold points and they die quickly in team fights.
spvp just needs more incentive to win the match, and less for top scores
LOL jumper. You realize vapor form lasts 1.5 seconds?
What?
Vapor form is 3 seconds.
You might try to actually play an ele before sprouting bullkitten. Just because the tooltip says it’s 3 seconds doesn’t mean it is. Vapor form is 1.5 seconds.
Also it gives downed penality so after a few uses you’ll instantly die.
I think you may regret this post, after you realize you’re wrong. I don’t play ele, but vaporform is clearly longer than 1.5 seconds. Feel free to try it yourself and time it.
@Lunacy your argument is irrelevant and misguided. Eles are one of the strongest and most versatile classes. Also the issue is not that they “got something good” but that it’s clearly a bit better than all other downed states now. Not that it should be removed, only that it should be adjusted slightly (imo anyway).
A simple little hp bar above the head with small condition/boon symbols would be awesome.
Yes that would be great. I can’t think of any negative impact this would have on gameplay. The information is already available on the left side of the screen, but why make us coordinate names with positions? Just put it on them in combat.
It really feels like people are not understanding fully just how strong mist form is with its damage reset and whatnot. Before you post, read OP please.
It must be really difficult to play this game without knowing how other classes downed state works.
The level of brain activity in this thread is lowering with each new poster.
“warriors have best downed state”
/thread
@Odaman you give the impression of not having read op’s full post. Mist form is clearly better than thief and mesmer.
OP has a point. I think they won’t do anything drastic, but possibly remove the damage reset. I think it would still be the best #2 even after that simply because you can move yourself, but it would not be unmanageable.
If you were to play starcraft, would you immediately jump into a competitive match and get frustrated that you didn’t understand how to play?
I understand your argument, but it’s a faulty one. Just because you can immediately jump in and pvp doesn’t mean you should.
On the other side of the argument, I think if there was some kind of ladder involved it might be easier for newer players to not have to fight much better players.
OP: they been nerfing thieves each patch now. They are moving slowly but steadily to balance the game. Check in every few weeks and read patch notes.
That’s good info thanks teapot
Has there been any news on ladder system being implemented? I’ve no idea why paid and free tourneys exist without a ladder system.
Really the only way is to do tournaments. You can submit a partial roster for free tournaments. Other than that you can hope you get on same team in spvp server.
Here we go again with the whining.
This is not the final patch ever going to happen on gw2, everyone acting like they should have fixed every single issue just because they fixed some.
It’s OK anet guys, I hope you don’t take all these crybabies too seriously. You have my permission to ignore them all and know that you have a great game on your hands that is going to only get better.
@HappinessFactory the base stats such as armor and health give you time to react. They don’t protect you from anything really, only give you space to breath.
wow you’re right man. I mixed up the two
The numbers I was saying are in fact armor values, sorry
I’ve got 1939 attack, 1016 precision, 1875 toughness, and 1760 vitality right now on my bunker-spec engi (3144 attack, 2939 armor, 23,522 health). I’ve actually started roaming around with this spec as well since it handles thieves so well but still has reasonable ranged damage + ton of cc.
Engineer here. 1340 toughness, 24k hp. I got killed in exactly under one second and no..I didn’t use elixir U..
backstab 10k.
There should be no kills under 1 second in this game regardless if they have full toughness or full crit gear. This isn’t a FPS game.
Otherwise, roll a thief and one shot anyone who doesn’t have toughness, 1-2 shot anyone with toughness.
My engi has 2900 toughness and about as much health as you. That’s when I’m bunkering and I still manage to have a reasonable power stat for my rifle. If I’m roaming I try not to go below 2200 toughness. 1340 is just completely asking to be one-shotted.
My advice would be to just stop caring about what your rank is. Play the game, have fun.
if you’re bored: warrior’s frenzy untraited gives 6sec quickness not 4
wiki says 5 actually
Thief and Mesmer downstates leave great opportunities to greatly delay the enemy or even get yourself up or hidden until you have to be abandoned, at which point you get up. People rarely even bother trying to stomp them because of the futility of it. These classes can easily delay long enough to nail their #3 ability.
Thief downed state is only very slightly OP. It needs shorter range on tele, or maybe an easier tell for direction of tele (direction thief was facing). However if you are alone with thief it is still pretty easy to get the stomp off before #3. Mesmer is easy and if you are having problems it is only your fault.
The elementalist downed state is flagrantly underpowered and laughable, the engineer isn’t much better. Once down they’re dead. You can stomp them with relative impunity and virtually no delay.
“Once down they’re dead.” — description of all classes’ downed state with no allies nearby. You act like it’s impossible to stomp any class but ele (spoiler: not true).
If you send two people to stomp downed warrior/necromancer/eng they will stomp them no matter what they will use in downed state….if you will send two people or even 5 people (which is stupid i know) to stomp thief or mesmer they will always and I mean always get away from first stomp and thief with good timing can get away from second stomp as well. This is really imbalanced and need fixing I dont even mention elementalist because its the easiest class to stomp in downed state. Dont forget in tpvp stomping is important because if you let thief or mesmer in downed state do you really think their team mates are so stupid to let them die and dont ress them? I didnt meet such a team.
Did you know that ranger has aoe stomp rupt? And guardian. Not just mesmer and thief that you like to concentrate on so much. And who in their right mind sends more than 1 person to stomp someone anyway, regardless of class? Again, thief is only slightly better than rest. Mesmer is not a problem. It’s like I’m reading the thoughts from the inside of a baddie’s head as he’s playing. “o this is OP, that’s OP, gotta send 5 people to stomp that mesmer, this is so unbalanced. How are we gonna cap points if we send whole team to stomp?!”
Didn’t read thread, but those stats are pretty low imo
Maybe you are playing like some light armor class or something, because that’s pretty ridiculously low for a guardian, or even engi or warrior.
Post screenshot of your equip and traits, it is very surprising to me you have such low stats

I’d never heard of this bug before. What info is there on this?
The fact that we have two people complaining about hammer warriors is proof enough that people want to be spoon-fed victory. Nothing should ever be difficult or else the game is not balanced and the devs have stolen your money. What a joke.
How do you win vs hammer warrior? Dodge and stun break and blocks and blinds and snares and cc.
happens when you go to pve and back to mists
