nope, soloq is garbage and it will separate the pop again. I like instant queues, and soloq’ers will get separated from the premades as the season progresses.
youre starting to sound too conceded for my taste. I don’t feel 6/2/6 brings anything new to the “power ranger meta”, if that is a thing. you don’t have any burst. you don’t have any immobilizes. you lack mobility without traveler runes. as a power ranger, the best way to support your team is by roaming and killing kitten, and sotf keeps you alive and moving. EB is bad. SoR is bad because you will always use it for the stun break function. lastly, you don’t do more damage because I have the luxury of slotting QZ. that in itself is usually a guaranteed kill.
but if your build gets YOU results, then keep on rolling. but don’t sell it as the best and only power build because it really isn’t for many reasons. a lot of us play in the higher brackets and speak from experience as well. to conclude, youre absolutely wrong about sotf being ineffective on a power build so just drop that argumentation imo.
I tested all variations of power builds and settled on sotf after hundreds of hours of testing – not just out on a whim. I would much rather roll with the glassier attack of opportunity build than what you’ve got there. it brings way more to the team.
true true. well, qz isn’t just a spike every 48 secs. it’s also fury and stun breaker. maybe im a baddie, but that’s how I get most my kills.
this thread is great and summarizes one of the obstacles to gw2’s pvp going places. I just wish they committed more resources to balancing the game on a monthly basis.
I mean it can work, but your team really has to be on top of things. usually someone should be right behind u to back u up when they reinforce. it can also be godly, if you can stay alive for a long time when the opponents are baddies.
I wholeheartedly agree with guy there. don’t go far unless u can kill it, seriously. bunkers are much more useful home or mid. reason for this is at far, it will get reinforced quickly and u will get zerged.
as a power ranger for example, I will annihilate just about every turret engie, ranger or necro quickly. I will go far, check what’s there and decide what to do.
it really hurts your team to go far, and die.
5v4’s should NEVER count toward ANYTHING, including leaderboards and MMR. the game simply shouldn’t count for anyone.
I hope this change is gonna be implemented soon.
I agree with you, with one exception. I think if the team that has a deserter wins it should count. If for nothing else than to prevent trolls from leaving at the last moment to cheat their team out of a win.
yes of course! that should be the exception.
sorry man, that just hasn’t been my experience. not sure what else to say.
killing a cele ele is doable but it just takes forever 1v1, so this isn’t something id be doing. but they don’t give me any trouble. s/d thief can go one way or another as you know. I use qz though so my spike is actually a spike. also I notice u don’t like to slot entangle. u don’t use spider or hound…so without immobs, how can u get the kill?
condis aren’t the problem usually, as u should be able to dictate range on the fight. it’s the clutch immob before u get spiked. your build takes care of that somewhat (if you waste your heal to get cleansed), but it leaves you without any burst to speak of.
sotf being good just on condi builds is just lol to me.

I’m going to spend some time using Traveler’s with the 6/2/6 build using LR+Entangle traited. Hopefully I can handle s/d thieves better I know we have no real chance vs CeleEle so I don’t count them at current moment.
ive taken down some good cele eles with my sotf power build and even good s/d thieves are manageable, but u don’t wanna use it so I cant help u much.
the power build u present just doesn’t have enough on-demand condi clears, which is likely why youre struggling, and it also doesn’t have any real burst (no quickness, no attack of opportunity). empathic bond just sucks, unless youre bunkering or playing attrition on point.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
I tested this out for a bit today. I have to say the burn uptime from the spirit was disappointing…to me, definitely not worth it over, say, SoR. also not taking Nature’s Protection + Evasive Purity hurts quite a bit.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
anyone else feel this way? requires massive sustained damage from multiple sources to take one of these down, no chance 1v1. hammer is annoying, but sword/horn is crazy with the condi clears and bleeds. am I missing something?
@Shanks.2907, Your build is very high burst that’s for sure. QZ + Wild + RoA into Rapid fire would almost kill any target. All I can say is if anyone looks at you your dead, price of running full dps build.
That’s how it’s most effective for the team, imo. If positioned well enough you can put a ton of pressure on point, and it takes an investment of time for them to go after you. Generally a lightning reflexes > hunter’s shot > hornet’s sting combo will get you out of any situation well enough. But you certainly are a sitting kitten if you get caught. :p
Most of the time it’s just swinging fights in my team’s favor and not really any direct confrontations. The damage multipliers rely on me being on the outside looking in (full endurance, +90% hp and flanking) to make the most impact.
good players will EASILY dodge your burst once or even twice at any time. tough matchups are all about sustain. im finding it difficult even with my power SotF build to survive against coordinated burst. doesn’t matter how good your positioning is, u cant run forever.
if a player leaves, the game MUST NOT count toward ladder points and MMR. it’s THAT simple. it needs to count as an abandon, like it is in dota2. all 5v4’s shouldn’t count for anything for either team, and the abandoner should get a hefty penalty (like they have to play 20 matches in unranked or something)
im getting double thieves several times in a row now, and zero thieves on the other team. when I get double thieves I know im going to lose for sure.
hey man my experience has been exactly the same. ive been getting stomped since the patch hit. I had a pretty good MMR (I think) going in, and now I keep getting grouped with soloers running weird builds and dying instantly. I think im 2-8 now…my game hasn’t changed, but my teammates’ skill level has it seems
for pve or pvp? in pve anything is fine. in pvp, the ranger has probably the highest skill cap in the game. ie. other profs require less effort for more efficacy. you will get facerolled by a lot of profs, but if u like the ranger a lot he can be competitive. you’ll just have to work a lot harder.
the quality of a ranger is heavily dependent on the skill of the player.
way, way more than other profs. this is discouraging to a lot of players, so as long as he knows.
I would like to know this as well. all this info should be available in game.
im having really bad luck, im 1-7 atm, keep getting matched up against really good players all running current meta, which I feel are on my level. on my team are strange people with builds ive never seen before and they just feed. this has been my experience since yesterday….seemed much better before. I think my mmr was good from before, hence being matched against other people with good mmr. but I cant get on the board at all!
(edited by mistsim.2748)
phoenix stomp looks so much better anyway =P
I have noticed some horrible players with a lot of games being near the top of the boards.
If it’s gonna be like this noone would actually care about it anyway
like what? matchups have been good for me, and lots of people care…mists are full.
significant vigor and might stacking nerfs, and slight celestial nerf and we’re good.
hey Justin. what makes the map not competitive is that spawn camping is possible and rampant! have you thought about adding multiple spawn points to the map?
it’s a fun map if youre with a team. consider adding more DM maps.
I joked with Hugh that we should put a big burning oil siege at the main exit.
We’re looking into serious ways to improve things, but it isn’t as high of a priority as the new game mode.
=O

@mistsim.2748, I’m not a fan of Survival of the Fittest, it’s very limited amount of condition remove unless you combo it with Healing Spring and Renewal and at-least Sigil of Purity or Generosity. You have no way to counter Burning which War/Engi/Ele will all apply none stop or condition spikes.
LR cd is very low, u can usually use it twice in a fight. SotF is the only reliable on-demand condi wipe we have (other than SoR) and it prevents death from immobilization. condi burst and burning in general are serious problems if you’re fighting on point all the time, which this build isn’t really for…kiting engies, hambows, and eles, and resetting fights are trivial
I dropped HS entirely due to the amount of CC that’s out there. you will almost always be thrown/feared out of it.
im actually not a fan of SotF on other builds. power ranger is probably the only spec that benefits from it. currently im not enjoying non-power non-zerker builds. i find rangers in general get annihilated on point by focus fire, stuns and immob spam. our condis and tankiness simply don’t stand up to cele specs from other profs IMO. not sure if u guys are playing the ranger on some next level, but this has been my experience in the top 150 (if that means anything atm).

@Mistsim
I think the Sigil of Intelligence is a huge waste on a Zerk Amulet build.
Sigil of Intelligence looses most of it’s potential if you already have the Crit Chance.
Also, piercing arrows are not needed for PvP. You’d be better off with Eagle eye. Simply because no.5 is for AoE. Your job in PvP is to force a target down. Not to AoE damage the enemy team. That’s what condi and melee classes are for.Apart from that, that’s basically one of the very few viable builds that Power Ranger is played into unranked PvP. Some people swap into Runes of Ranger – but as a LB Power Ranger you are supposed to Burst’n’roam. You can’t really stomp a downed player. So the Traveler runes are a very good choice, actually superior to runes of the Ranger.
piercing arrows is essential exactly because your job is to crush a single target when they get lost behind engie turrets, minions, or their teammates on the point. in fact, you cant properly focus down a target in a team fight without piercing arrows, period. eagle eye is kind of pointless because we can already hit at close to 1500 without it.
sigil of intelligence on the GS is absolutely huge. it ensures your 5>3>2 combo or something similar all crit. it’s useful when qz is down and it can one-shot a mesmer or thief for example. with 30 in wilderness, my crit is only 37% when I don’t have fury up. the guaranteed burst turns the tide basically.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
where does the “high mobility” come from? my major issue with condi rangers is their utter lack of mobility. 25% run speed =/= high mobility.
but it seems really tanky which is nice.
I have an issue with a lot of these builds, mainly because they don’t include SotF.
something like this:
has multiple condi cleanses and stun breakers. considering the cause of death 90% of the time is a well-timed immob or stun, it’s important to have a lot of “on-demand” abilities. with GS and hunter’s shot it’s very easy to reset the fight as a power ranger, but not if you’re pinned down. EB often wont save you and ive stopped running it since SotF was introduced.
I just don’t see any power ranger build being viable against a group of competent players without multiple on-demand stun-breakers and immob cleanses. I feel like crying when I see triple signets on a ranger. a good player can make anything work…but SoR is such a situational utility due to its purely defensive one-time use (long CD), and SoW is more offensive because of the cast time. we hit like trucks now, and we don’t need more damage.
the other reason to go 30 into wilderness is the high vitality and boon duration. having 22k health and high prot uptime is a great buffer against necros and engies, so if I mess up with my positioning I can still live and reset the fight.
I agree that good thieves and cele meta overshadow the power ranger, but it’s still fun to play in the higher brackets for those well-timed bursty funtime moments. and arguably, we do some things better than the mes. we are also less hard-countered by thieves, especially if u run 30 in wilderness. lastly, ive had some good experiences back-capping using swoop and traveler runes…our mobility is not too shabby at all.
regarding pets: wolf and spider first choices without a doubt. CC is what gets you the kill every time, not poison (unless youre playing attrition/bunkering). having two semi-reliable immobs, a pindown, and an aoe fear is too good.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
solo queue was so much more fun then the current system. I find myself getting frustrated and annoyed a lot more often against teams of people queued together.
I played solo queue because i dont like the feel of team queue.
this has not been my experience. after at least 50 ranked games, ive been matched against premades only a handful of times, or even less.
6/0/2/6/0 is strong all the way through and generally doesn’t require babysitting unless the thief is extremely good . going full glass is never a good idea against opponents who know how to dodge your spike. 6/6/x/x/x imo never was a good idea, not in the “higher” brackets. the reason RTW rangers can be so strong is that survival utilities give you tons of immob cleanses, while high HP gives you a nice buffer against condis. in fact, I would go as far as to say that you don’t stand a chance as a ranger in general against good opponents without SotF
(edited by mistsim.2748)
not quite sure what youre referring to regarding pvp community. I don’t pay attention to the mists chat often, but when I do, it’s always harmless.
but if youre a pve’er voting for skyhammer in ranked and getting farmed, without a clue about your profession, you’ll hear it from me in teamchat for sure. take that kitten to unranked.
still, this was probably the biggest, most interesting and most fun GW2 pvp event to date. it’s a big milestone and that counts for something.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
stuff
congrats and ima let you finish, but you don’t think celestial is a tad over the top on engies and eles (srs question)?
I still don’t understand what the problem with SoloQ & TeamQ was. You have solved so many issues that SoloQ had. Why would you remove it? I just can’t see the new Ranked Arena working out like this.
I think that Ranked Arena should be ‘Solo’ or ‘5v5’ only. I think Unranked Arena should allow everything else as well.
well, they basically made it like dota2. everyone goes in the same pool, and the soloq’ers will generally remain in lower ranks compared to the best premades, which will be winning as a team. the reason I like solo and team q’s combined is that q pops faster and you get an interesting mix of people. after a little while, ranks will settle and you’ll be playing with people close to your level.
also I thought they mentioned something about win/loss ratio not affecting your place on the ladder. instead, your overall performance does relative to your teammates…is that right?
haven’t had too many issues in NA. I played both during prime time and early morning (4-5am est). imbalance of teams was fairly significant initially, but as I play more games (30-ish games in now), the closer the skill gap is. my win ratio is roughly 60-70% (estimate).
one thing im noticing is that queues are increasing in length as im moving up in the MMR, which is understandable. longest queue for me was 6min during primetime, which seemed a little long.
the pvp community seems vibrant atm, and it’s very populated, whereas wvw is dying. these are my impressions after being away for 10 months. pvp community will continue to grow as long as balancing is frequent (currently, cele ammy needs nerfing), and as long as we get new and fresh content (rewards, maps and/or gamemodes). once the season and ladder launch, spvp will have a purpose. a lot of people are enjoying it now. the algorithm just needs a bit of tweaking, nothing too major imo.
wvw is the mode that literally hasn’t had ANY significant or relevant content added since release. EOTM and BL revamp were bad moves that drained a lot of resources, and ended up being fads that faded soon. arena and wvw ranks I would classify as a minor good additions.
so in short: if development resources are distributed intelligently to a specific game mode, it will grow or stay alive. i feel spvp lately has been supported intelligently and is growing now as we speak. whatever gets neglected will wilt, like wvw has been for about a year and a half.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
I wouldn’t go full glass either…thieves/mesmers will counterplay you hard. if you invest in survival of the fittest, you’ll find damage is still great but u can actually handle some 1v1’s and will need less babysitting.
but you’ll figure this out as you progress up the brackets. full glass ranger is worst glass, gets shut down hard.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
the other major problem is with the influx of new players picking spirit watch, skyham and courtyard. they just don’t understand these game modes well, which usually results in them getting farmed. very frustrating.
1. If you love you GS as main weapon –
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAR3XjMq0yaHLOsw1aAChaVA0OG6gj1dSsDbdKz6DPBB-TVCBABccEAie/BOV/RiHAAAXAgsU+xoSQGOIAIqbgUAsJMC-w
Dont be afraid to be firt liner, with 30k hp(with gurds bonus), almost 3k armor , bark skink and SoS its very hard to take you down. RAO and enlargment give you good stability uptime (your damge is at his best under 50% hp). When needed and after you used all your CD’s feel free to take a stap back switch to axe, with the might staking for you and your pet.
GOOD LUCK
that’s a baller build. but given that u have almost zero condi wipes, you will get crushed by immobilize very often!
ive been contemplating switch to EU to spice things up a bit. any major pros/cons?
if you really wanna keep playing your ranger in zergs:
1) use valk/zerker pieces if you wanna keep using LB, and just learn how to keep your distance. your job is to pick out other squishy casters, like staff eles.
2) if u want to be in the middle of the zerg, re-gear into PVT/zerker pieces. use GS/sword/X and slot lots of survival utilities
I have to try out the condi survival still, but my one question would be why run it over a necro or cele engie? it’s not any tankier.
Because it can beat both nec and cele engi and keep ~15 bleed stacks up. It’s also a lot more resilient than power ranger and harder to outplay. The moment celestial gets nerfed, this build will be the king of sidepoints.
I gotta start learning this build!
check out the RTW build I updated few threads down, if pew pew is your thing. the SotF version is in metabattle database I believe (I wouldn’t run the glass version).
power rangers are pretty strong now. matchmaking is messy, but ive been winning most of my ranked matches (75-80%) since patch hit, queuing solo. im sure i’ll hit a wall at some point, and im also very rusty.

Luckily things like this are totally doable in the new system!
cant wait.
they had an opportunity to make world events challenging when the game launched. do you guys remember how silly they were with 20-30 people aoe’ing everything? nothing scaled properly to the numbers. some people couldn’t even tag anything to get credit. after a while, I realized that world events would never be challenging content. just grind-fests for cosmetics.
so basically youre saying don’t give up and keep playing your best?
updated build after 8 month hiatus for all the newer players! power rangers are no longer a laughing matter.
not sure why Skyhammer remains in ranked. the current voting system simply decreases the chances of playing it, but unfortunately 3 times in a row, 1-2/10 votes have forced the map for me. it’s really frustrating because the ones voting for Skyhammer are usually new/pve players who end up getting farmed anyway after getting their pick.
in addition, this creates a lot of negative feelings toward the person(s) who voted for the map. we shouldn’t be feeling this way toward one another, but the system is pitting those with vastly different objectives and preferences.
(edited by mistsim.2748)
ANet needs to implement abandons, like moba games. if someone leaves, the game simply should end or not count toward MMR. dishonor penalty isn’t enough to deter people atm.
