Did you check your temperatures, before starting to play and when the FPS go down? Might be a heat issue, if your laptop can handle up to 70 FPS and then drops to 15 later. It’s possible your CPU is throttling to prevent overheating, causing the FPS to drop so low.
Don’t sweat it, just post the info when you get it.
I second this. Should be throttling judging by the age of the gpu. Your TIM between the cpu/gpu and the heatsings might have been dried out and need replacement.

With a birthday scroll you will be able to get a toon to 80 in a day or two in Edge od the mists easily. If that’s how you wanna move keep that in mind.
105C celcius is the max tj for those cpus, so with stock cooler you should be running 60-75s in game anything above 75C there should be something wrong with either mount of the cooler or with the thermal compound.
pro tip
do not bother asking for dx11 its not gonna happen.
but do ask for 64bit client.
Yea but i dont get how the 64bit client would help increase the performance^^
It increases the amount of memory it can use which means less things needing to be reloaded from disk. Helpful if you are always in crowds with your texture and character quantity settings maxed out.
Quite simply, it would stop crashing the Game with OOM errors. Everytime I do a large event like Teq with max Character models I crash with in 15mins. Set that to medium I never Crash. This is the limitation of the 32bit Game Client.
I see… That doesn’t happen to me. I go with simply best appearance with best textures and high res char settings enabled at 1440p/2160p but every system is different any bit of improvement would make me happy.

Are you happen to be overclocking any of your components aside from factory overclocks? I’ve run into similar crashing problems over the years with different hardware configs mostly due to unstable overclocks. GW2 is what I usually use for OC stability testing Can play BF4/world of warcraft and other games for hours with some overclock settings but crash in GW2 in 2 mins.
I dont think that processor has its multiplier unlocked so there wont be “too high overclocking”. The question should be have you tinkered around in your bios to overclock? if so revert them to normal. Also make sure that your mobo is on the latest bios. Check it with CPU-Z in the motherboard tab and crosscheck it with asus’ site.
I’d say with a quite high confidence that this is purely due to dried out Thermal compound under the GPU heatsink. What you are experiencing is one of the biggest signs of overheating components. So eventhough there isn’t enough dust that might cause this kinda issues the real problem resides under the surface. the TIM must have turned into concrete by now^^
Would going boot camp windows enable CFX? just asking out of curiousity. If yes boot camping and installing windows would be a better idea for gaming on that machine.
The funniest thing about your argument is it’s based in the idea the game is completely unplayable even with high-end hardware. But that is not true…
Played at 1440p, while recording, with browser (I think it was 7 tabs…) + soundcloud playing (adobe shockwave running).
And yet I was getting 35fps (totally fine) when massive PvD and only went bad when massive blob vs massive blob was happening. Performance, without recording and all that stuff in the background, would be ~10fps more.
I’d really like you redo the recording in EBG at prime time crowd EOTM basically shows nothing compared to EBG.
Are you planning on overclocking?
If you dont really need to get a laptop, get a desktop pc for gaming. But if mobility is more important to you go with it but dont expect to run @60fps all the time especailly in WvW on any settings let alone being @Max
have you tried increasing your gpu voltage in a little increment to see if it helps? It might be boosting but lacking power to keep up.
Yea i know but what I’m talking about is Dx11 is available since 2009. I’m not saying that they should implement an API right now I’m just saying they should have included it since the beginning like, If im not mistaken, they promised. Dx11 would have been better than this. Mantle or Dx12 are the things that I never mentioned I dont even think a 3rd Guild wars game would support either of them..
I guess there were some posts from the devs that the game is not getting a new api support and this is how the game will age. OFC they have rolled some optimizations here and there since the release but it’s still horrendous even with high end gaming rigs.
I wouldn’t say 65% slower without also saying clock for clock.
And that’s just the design philosophy of the two companies. AMD throws more but slower cores to process a large number of threads quickly while Intel’s approach is to use fewer cores that are nearly 3x the performance to process the same amount of overall workload.
As for a revamp of the engine, who knows. But for current FPS games which do scale, well that’s the selling point of those game engines which are also sold to 3rd party developers (as well as crossplatforming). Since ANet doesn’t sell their game engine, they didn’t have the additional motivation when creating it all those years ago. And they aren’t sitting an an enormous pile of money like Blizzard and could afford to spend some of it on updating their client, as well as revamp of models and textures.
Everyone I know left the game due to performance related issues where the most fun parts of the game like Big events and WvW are not enjoyable when the experience is the same as a power point slide. Investing in client side issues will pay off because more players coming in the world will give potentially more circulation of gold and gems. Both nVidia & Amd offered help after the release to team up and solve graphical issues of the game but guess who didnt give a crap about it and let it be?
Experienced same issues back in the day when i was at the college. Got WTFast to get around it. IDK how it works for GW2 but it was pretty awesome for World of Warcraft. It’s a paid service tho. Before I buy a paid service like that I’d firstly contact with campus’ IT guys they will probably help you without needing to buy WTFast.
Yea wattage wise it’s more than enough. The reason why i asked because I was wondering the “current situation” of the psu. Non branded ones tend to wear off quite faster than the quality ones. This shouldnt be a psu issue. Other than psu and overheating, the next thing comes to my mind would be bios you are running your mobo and the slot you have installed your card in. Can you check whether or not you are running the latest bios from your mobo’s manufacturer’s website. ( to see which version you are running you can download cpu-z) While you are at it download GPU-Z aswell to check GPU link speeds. It is supposed to work @16x underload.
Been wondering that since BWE1, this deosnt seem to be happening. This is what you get if you code a game with an ancient API.
I see you left your psu out of the system specs. Can you add your psu into it? That might very well be the source of the issue. Also yeah have you oced any of your components?
I’d check whether or not the graphics card is over heating. I dont know which type you got but reference design of that gpu looks like it’s from the 2002. Just check with HWmonitor. It’s a free tool just google it. Also how old is your power supply? and what is its rated wattage?
I found the problem. For some reason even though the catalyst drivers have a GW2 profile by default it wasn’t using crossfire. I created a custom GW2 profile in the catalyst control center and made sure crossfire was enabled.
Not exactly stellar results though. I noticed a very small frame rate boost; I have read elsewhere that GW2 doesn’t scale well with dual GPU setups :/
Minimum FPS wise you might be right especially if you are running on 1080p. I’m using it for 1440p and 4k it scales quite well however it’s still suffering from frame pacing issues on 4k.
make sure you are playing the game on the full screen mode. Not on the full screen windowed or windowed modes. What you are experiencing is the sole reason I upgraded from a 3570k.
(edited by muslumgurseks.4951)
Im using CFX and I’m pretty much covered @1440p but the frame pacing issues is still there for 4k reso for CFX should be pretty similar for the green team.
Are you happened to be playing the game on windowed mode? Make sure you are playing on the proper full screen mode.
I’ve got a similar rig and im getting pretty smooth gaming experience @1440p with ultra setts in WvW. Make sure you are running latest bios for the mobo and your CPU is not downclocking itself.
If you plan to play Gw2 forget about amd cpus. Dont even think about it.
TBH I would prefer slower CPU or GPU than computer w/o SSD now.
You are missing the point of adding it anytime you want/can. But when you buy a slower cpu and gpu your money is gone^^

Im currently running the system in my signature. I’m getting pretty responsive and fluid gameplay experience on 1440p. But I’ve got a 4k monitor but that kitten ed resolution requires more horse power than I have. I can play at 4k but game becomes less responsive and jittery on threesome blob fights. ( You know what I mean if you play on SFR-Deso-JS-FSP).
So help me decide. I found a used r9 290 with a pretty sweet deal should I get it. Share me your experience with CFX/SLI setups for GW2 and gaming in general. I’m quite aware it becomes somewhat PITA sometimes but does it increase the performance in higher resolutions.
Don’t know which region you are living in but there’s gotta be a place where you can get a custom pc built. Go with intel 4770k/4790k processor with a z97 board from asus, asrock or gigabyte they all rock solid boards. Get atleast a Gtx 970 graphics card (Evga, Asus, Gigabyte, Msi w/e is your favorite brand), 8/16GB CL9 Rams 750w psu with atleast a +80 Bronze certificate (corsair, antec, silverstone, seasonic are some of the best ones outthere) and a case which is appealing to your eyes but I would avoid anything that looks like bikes from tron ^^ and get one with good airflow and cable management options. As far as storage goes that depends on your budget. 250-256GB ssd gone down in price lately if you can afford one combine it with atleast a 1TB HDD from western digital (Caviar Black) or seagate if you cant go with only the HDD and buy ssd later on.
A 4690k, 4790K, and your 5820K will all perform about the same paired with a GTX980 for this game, since they all use the same core. Whats going to set them apart is their max OC potential. I would say run them all at 4.0Ghz and you will see the same performance across the board.
so you dont need to drop 2800+ on a 5820K rig to get top performance out of this game.
Sir I had 3570k which was running at 4.7ghz and that was not performing anywhere near my new x99 build I can say that as a long time i5 user. Now im able to run the game with all the settings cranked up to best appearance with FXAA and max culling settings @ 1440p and it doesnt break sweat. ~45fps on theresome blob fights rarely drops below 40. Its almost the double lowest fps I got out of my 3570k. Not even mentioning the significant increase in +overall system responsiveness and ability to run lotsa apps in the background without being worried. Yes it’s quite alot more expensive than a devil’s canyon i5 but I never regreted paying the premium to get my hands on the x99 platform. I’m not exactly sure whether it’s the larger cache or the ddr4 that this platform has over 3rd/4th gen i5/i7s but the game obviously loves it.
Can’t we have a similar system like world of warcraft, where you dont wait in hours of queues after you disconnected and that blessing lasts like couple of minutes. This kittenstorm caused by constant disconnects can be minimized. I kinda got tired of waiting hours of ques every single prime time.
any 4th gen i5 series or higher would get you started. Higher ones are better depending on your budget. Define a budget and people will help you get a better hardware to get a better experience. But keep in mind that it will not come cheap to upgrade since you will have to change mobo, cpu, ram and probably your psu then the graphics card later on.
Providing world of info does not change anything neither. I have spent half of the prime time waiting queues on borders let alone EBG.
Let’s be real, I’m running the game on a much better hardware and I’m struggling @4k, it’s just a mere dream to game on a resolution like that with mobile hardware just yet.
(edited by muslumgurseks.4951)
Yea it sucks, If you dont experience it in any other games then it’s just like i said. It’s the game thats just kittening up not your hardware. (Assuming you are using exact same settings while comparing both cards)
Zerg = fps drops. Isnt related with the hardware you are using. Anything you can do is to overclock the cpu but that will only yield slight amount of increase in the lowest fps you are getting.

In my experience, thermal interface materials tend to dry faster on portable units than ones on the desktops. I’m quite comfortable sayind that It’s just your cpu and gpu pastes requires renewing with a good and durable one. I wouldnt do this on my own if you dont have enough experience because you might end up bricking the machine with a tiny mistake. This is valid if only you are 100% sure that your heatsinks are clean and not blocked.
I give w10 preview a shot everytime i change something in my rig, hw change or tweaking but i keep getting lower frames weird frame drops so I change back everytime but it looks promising. I’d probably wait for the full release if I were you. W7/8.1 are quite solid for gaming tho.
I really wonder how much better performance you will over you current setup…
Upgrading your CPU for GW2 is useless… large WvW or Worl bosses your FPS will sucks with any CPU.
Arena.net should push for better performance with low lvl API….
this is not hard to do it… they have 2 options. Wait for DX12 or try it on Mantle. The problems?
- GW2 is based on DX9…. i dont know if it can be ported to mantle. If it was DX11 then it would much better.
- Of course big investment into this project but… they dont care for our experience. So if you want to play GW2 you need to spend 200$ on CPU + 120$ on MB and 100$ on GPU.. and yet it is not playable in WvW
So i recommend you to think about it… for GW2 …. not worth
here is some difference between FX 6300 and pentium g3258… actually there is no difference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a-c1idbPhk
I would second this like 2 weeks ago, it can be quite playable if you are willing to spend thousand dollars on x99 platform. But that still doesnt change the fact that its just not worth it for gw2. Take it from someone who literally change 3 platforms and spent thousands of dollars on hardware just for this game..
That’s not the point. They do this during the down time so we dont have enough people to respond it. By the time we realise is already lost. And we simply dont have to put people in every single tower because Anet cant fix their kitten.
Can I please get an explanation how the hell people are able to hack into towers and flip them into matter of seconds? We work so hard to get our kitten to tier 3 and siege them up but an kitten, which Anet obviously has no intention of banning, comes and screws us.
Changing GPU simply will not solve anything. 60fps in crowded place is not possible with the current coding.
As resolution goes up cpu strain goes down AFAIK. Even though you are running a 2500k wh,ch is a game killer cpu @~5ghz and you get that much fps you might wanna start putting the game on lower settings. I’d start from FXAA and shadows. I personally run the game @4k resolution and I still experience those severe dips other than that Cpu utilization has gone down noticably while gpu usage is almost always 100% (except when those dips happen)
It is normal. Dont confuse these games with dx11 titles where you will find a less “complicated” and more optimized engine.
I5 4200m is probably the reason

You should OC your cpu and check whether or not it changes anything since CPU is the limiting factor in these types of engines.
Ps: Assuming you have an after market cooler since you bought a devil’s canyon cpu. if you dont have one dont go past 4.2

Yea that kinda spooky things happen, game tends to favor older GPUs. I remember people whining about going from 5xxx-6xxx series of radeon cards to 7xxx which were the latest gen and having poor performance. Got better in time if im not mistaken. Also have you OCed your cpu? And what’s your ~GPU utilization (290x) in LA? and what resolution are you playing on.

That’s exactly whats wrong with this game just like any other dx 9 MMOs… You will see those dips its just what it is.
I’ve seen gameplay videos that don’t lag, some made even a year ago.
Considering my specs are a clear overkill, i don’t understand why it shouldn’t top the performance to be honest. :x
Yea 20-30 fps are smooth to the eye when you are watching them as videos not so much when you are playing. You are completely right your specs are overkill for an mmo but that doesnt necessarily mean you are guaranteed to have the performance you expect to have unfortunately. Because in the end it all depends on the coding of the engine.
Overclock your cpu if only you have an adequate cooler, Make sure you decrease culling settinges, Here is the settings that Im using http://imgur.com/ESuubz0
