So after the sale the bulk rate of keys are going to go up to the price before the 50% reduction of 3120 gems? I don’t think so.

Nope. The pack was a sale special. The key sale is now over, and the pack is no longer available.

Why The Stat Cap Is So Important

Could be off-topic by now, but…

I’m with neither crowd – stat capping or endless stat progression. Though you could count me in with the side that prefers a stat cap – I do believe that after a certain point the game should be more about your skill than your ability to get better stats.

Though… I actually have an issue with games in that I need to feel like I’m always advancing toward something. Happens with console games, too. When I get near endgame, when I know there’ll be nothing to discover anymore, I get bored and… start over. I worry about what’ll happen when all my alts reach 80 – I’ll probably feel the need to ditch them and make new low level alts… rinse and repeat. /o\

Obviously, that’s just how I play games – other people aren’t me, so they don’t necessarily agree with me. I feel like something silly and useless – like level never capping even long after stats have capped (other players don’t need to be able to see it, just me) would be enough to keep me going even after hitting the gear/stat caps. Otherwise I just feel like it’s such a waste of exp that could be going toward leveling.

I don’t care about stats. Just give me levels. Forever…………

I used to like this game.

I’m sorry to ask this, but has anyone found a really good way of handling the Swamp? It seems that one is really hated.

Well I don’t know if this is a proper answer but I usually just take the furthest wisp and use Portal to instantly get it back, while the other two easily return their wisps. Spamming jump also helps to avoid most of the traps, but you also need to visually avoid them.

Swamp is one of the faster dungeons to me, but then again not every group has a mesmer :S

Another possibility (if you have a mesmer in the group) is to try and get the 3 wisps to spawn close to each other, get the mesmer to put a portal near the area where you need to put the wisps back, and walk over to a point where everyone with wisps can quickly get to – then open a portal for them.

If no one’s a mesmer or traited for speed (happened in a group I was in)… then it becomes more painful to do.

That’s a little extreme. It’s not a scam; you’re not actually being robbed of any money. You are getting a discount, it’s just less in practice than it sounds in theory. The 25 key bundle is still cheaper than 5 bundles of 5. They are giving a discount… just a smaller one depending on how you look at it. It’s still a deal, and still a good deal, just not as good as it sounds at first glance. You can argue about the morality of the marketing strategy, but calling it a scam is flat out incorrect. It’s only a scam if they are tricking you into paying more than what you should. They’re not. The information is there, in plain sight: 50% off based on a price of 3125.

All stores do this. It’s the customer’s responsibility to check if the discount is actually worth it in practice.

What’s actually really shady is what local stores are doing for “Black Friday” where I live (we don’t actually have Black Friday). Netizens have begun calling it “Black Fraud” – basically they are advertising huge discounts when in reality they bumped the prices of the items up, and the “discounted” versions are actually more expensive than when not on “sale”.

That’s scamming. This is just somewhat misleading marketing in comparison.

Keys are not worth 80 cents, nor 5 gold.

Unable to quote right now, but yes, you can only get the consumables – most of these are still sold in the shop, though (I’d call the black lion salvage kit and the fine transmutation stones good stuff, in any case), so they do need to make it so the keys’ prices don’t nuke the chances of those items selling. I do agree that most of what the chest drops is useless, don’t get me wrong – I’m just saying that making keys very cheap would compromise sales for items that can also be gotten with gems. In particular I think fine transmutation stones, crafting boosters and black lion salvage kits are good chest drops, but ymmv.

That said I would love something like a costume box, provided I could trade for the costumes so I could get the ones I wasn’t lucky enough to get, and that all costumes had the exact same drop rate instead of some costumes being rarer than others. That’s what really crushes the value of chests for me.

I actually believe it’s worse since in the case of a discount, you’re getting less of a discount, but you’re still getting an advantageous deal – in the case of a fee/tax, you’re at a disadvantageous position from the start, so being misleading about just how disadvantageous it is is pretty rotten. Or maybe I just think that because I have to pay these abusive taxes. :p

Personally I just wish they did away with the randomness of items altogether. Let me pay for exactly what I want, even if I may end up having to pay more. I prefer paying more for a certainty than a bargain for a chance. Or, at least, make drop rates (edit: for gem store random stuff only) equal across the board and let us trade with each other for what we want. Making us get stuck with stuff we won’t ever use is a dealbreaker for me.

Okay, so what you are saying is that if the 25 pack existed prior to the sale, it wouldn’t cost 3125 gems (so it wouldn’t be a “25 singles” pack). There would already have been a bulk discount, probably greater than the 28% discount for the keys. Thus why there’s no 50% discount for the sale – because the pack wouldn’t cost the full 3125 in the first place.

Assuming there was a 25-pack available normally, and assuming it’d be more advantageous than 5 5-packs, we could say it could be, say, ~35% off, and cost 2000 gems. Which means the actual sale discount in this particular example would be 22%. (The actual discount they would apply is irrelevant so we can speculate with just about any discount here.)

Thus, looking at it from that angle, 50% sounds misleading, and the best way to make it seem less misleading would be to consider the 25 pack would normally have the exact same discount or more than the 5 pack – which means the actual sale discount is 30% off or less.

(Again, sorry for being a tl;dr broken record, I just want to make sure I fully understand the argument before I continue attacking points you never made.)

I agree with all of the above, and I see where you’re coming from now. I still consider 50% to be a valid/accurate discount – under the exact circumstances that they listed it (when compared to the price of buying 25 individual keys, or considering it a pack of 25 singles). Maybe not the most honest/least misleading, but it’s still correct. It’s the model most stores out there would adopt. People should be paying more attention to the prices than the discount tags, one way or the other. But yes, as with most marketing, it can be considered misleading.

Similar to how taxes where I live work – they say the tax for utility bills is 25%, but that’s 25% over the final price of the bill. So if you pay $100, it’s $25 in taxes. Which means the price without taxes is $75. Which means you’re actually paying a 33% tax. 25% and 33% are both accurate depending on how you look at it, but 25% obviously looks better for them, and can be perceived as intentionally misleading (I know that’s how I perceive it, anyway).

Consider that the items you get from chests are also for sale on the shop (or usually are, anyway). If they reduced the price of keys too much, that would completely devalue the items that are inside the chests which can also be bought with gems. That’s the real reason why keys are expensive – they can’t be too cost effective or the other items in the shop are left to gather dust.

Basically the issue is the random factor – they have to make it so that, ultimately, using keys is not a cheaper method than buying the items directly, based on the chance of items dropping. Making keys cheaper would do just that. You can get items that cost 300 gems (black lion salvage kits) with keys. If a key cost only 10 silver, they’d also have to severely nerf the drop rates of the more expensive things… making keys useless again.

I do think they could be a bit cheaper. I wouldn’t spend money on keys, myself, and I’m not a fan of the chests either.

I would like chests more if all the drops had more or less the same intrinsic value (e.g. the same price in the gem shop), same drop rate, and weren’t account bound. That way, you wouldn’t be stuck with things you don’t want. Could trade with other people and so forth. Or just get some of your money back in TP value.

@Jabberwock

Just to clarify: what you are saying is that, instead of have a discount for the sale, they’re just adding a new bulk offer discount (in this case, 50% off for 25 keys, like the 28% off for 5 keys) and trying to pass it off as a sale?

That if there was normally a 25 key pack available, it’d just have this price as a regular bulk discount?

So it’s just a regular bulk discount and not a sale discount?

Sorry to be repetitive – just trying to understand where you’re coming from since we seem to be misinterpreting each other here.

Heh, we have a battle of the edits here. You can see my previous edit for my answer to your new edit.

Edit: I completely agree with your final edit, that is what they should have done. But in the end it is the same as listing the current 25-pack as 30% off, the only difference being that you must buy 5 times as many keys at one time.

Editception!

I don’t think the new 25 pack is a loophole, more a common marketing strategy of just offering a bigger discount for more items as an incentive to get people to spend a little extra. The onus would be on people to not buy more than they need in this case.

It may just be a difference in what we consider to be a bulk pack, in the end – if you consider a 25 pack to be 5 packs of 5, then the discount is 30%, but if you consider it to be 25 packs of 1, then it’s 50%. So you’d pick the discount to display based on that.

I would just personally have gone with offering a 30% discount for the 5 key bundle instead of creating a new one for the duration of the sale only. It would have looked less attractive, but there’d be no room for confusion then.

Sorry, I ended up deleting my comment before I saw your reply – to clarify what Jabberwock is replying to, it’s the notion that they implied ANet should’ve listed the 5 pack discount as 28% off. Apologies for misreading.

Edit: That said, the inconsistency wouldn’t be solved by changing the listed discount of the 25 pack, because the 25 pack did not exist before the sale. So there is no way to solve the inconsistency because no other item has a brand new pack with a discount during the sale. It’d still remain inconsistent with the other sales simply because all the others were existing packs, so they had their own price to base the discount off of.

What they could’ve done is give the 5 key pack a 30% discount instead and not have a 25 key pack at all.

There is a (very) fine line between honest communication with players and PR disasters. I think the post by Chris treaded the line carefully, and with good reason. In the past, careless wording caused a storm in the forums, so I can’t blame them for being vague or avoiding some issues altogether. Some people wouldn’t be content unless they specifically said they would nerf the requirements of Ascended Gear or remove it altogether, for instance – I would avoid mentioning plans for that, too. People are already twisting every single instance of the word “progression” as a sure sign of the introduction of treadmills, for one.

That said I can understand why they don’t talk about things until they’re close to release. Game design isn’t a linear process – there are lots of ideas and things that get discarded, and lots of things which are half finished or even near finished which are also discarded. Talking about things before they are absolutely ready to be implemented poses the risk of talking about something that won’t be implemented, thus causing unnecessary drama and potentially becoming another PR nightmare. It is the most sensible option to stay quiet about things until they’re ready; that way, if the idea dies down, nobody needs to be disappointed (if it was a good idea) or will have raged needlessly (if it was a bad one).

Overall I appreciate these planned changes. They are quite right in saying a big chunk of the playerbase has embraced Fractals (have you been to Lion’s Arch recently?), too, and I am part of the crowd that liked the last event for the opportunity of the being there as the world is shaped. I’m guessing they used survey data for those statements.

I agreed with the choice, personally – I feel like, of course, no matter whether I’d been there or not, the outcome would’ve been the same, but the event did change the game world – we got a new map, the LA restoration began, we learned about the Consortium and what Canach did, and so forth – it did add world-changing content, and the ancient karka battle is something that probably would go down in history and so forth. But yes, ultimately our choices don’t actually impact the game – that would be impossible to do in a massively multiplayer game without having some means of going back to fix the damage (a la dynamic event chains).

“So according to your statement you rely on a “BOT” (as in their computer detection system to find bots) to ban players for BOTTING, clearly this is proof that your system as of current is FLAWED.”

Except nowhere in the dev’s post did it say they relied on a computer program to find bots.

That’s the definition of the straw man fallacy – your point is based on statements that were never made.

That said, bot hunting systems, automated or manual, will always have false positives.

Buying game items with real cash (i.e. pay-to-win) is supposed to be a crappy deal, to discourage people from doing it. That way the people who want to play the game to get rewards have an easier time than people who want to bribe the referee.

OP said cosmetic, though. Cosmetics aren’t pay-to-win, they’re pay-to-look-cool. Big difference.

Lost Shores Feedback Thread

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

neon.4863

Okay, let’s see.

I think the event was pretty good in theory. If everything had worked properly, if nobody had gotten disconnected, if everyone had been able to attend, if the TP hadn’t made gem spending on chests useless, if everyone had gotten good rares from the chest and so forth – it would have been a fun, epic event like advertised, at least for me. There was fun stuff to do, there was loot to be had, zerging and even dying with everyone was fun.

But sadly, not everything worked perfectly. Plenty of disconnects, plenty of bugs, wasted gems on chests, and so forth. I’m just going to go over what I think could be improved:

Consortium Chest

When you make an item available for both gems and forging, please take care to make it so that it’s not more advantageous, in-game money-wise, to forge it than buy it. As it is, the contents of the chest are worth too little, which means we can buy the materials for chests off the TP for less gems than if we buy chests individually or in bulk. This gives people (like me) who got chests for gems directly a bad taste in their mouths. I wasted a lot of potential in-game cash (and some real money too) because of this. Exchanging gems for gold should get me fewer chests than exchanging gems for chests.

Lag/Disconnects/Crashes

It’s pretty clear that your servers can’t handle massive amounts of players just yet. Please don’t have once in a lifetime events until this issue is minimized. When people disconnect or crash or lag, they’re frustrated because they know they’ve permanently missed their chance. It’d still suck to get disconnected and have to redo something, but at least you can redo it. In a once only event, this is impossible.

Also, if you must have one-time-only events, please consider better ways to hand out loot rewards. A chest that can despawn isn’t a good way – if you die the chest could be gone by the time you come back. If you disconnect you won’t get anything. Mailing items to players or having players talk to an NPC are solutions that would not punish people who got disconnected or died.

Bugs

Better quality checking seems to be obviously in order. Have a public test server, perhaps? Or buff your quality check team. The Halloween event had some bugs, but this event was nearly unplayable because almost everything broke.

Loot

Have loot drops be fixed, or get the RNG to group loot based on TP value and give everyone rewards that are worth roughly the same (say one expensive, one so-so, one cheap). Some people getting legendary precursors and some people getting exotics worth a couple of silver may have done the TP good – precursor prices have dropped – but is unfair on an individual level. Everyone should be given rewards with the same value, not fully random rewards within a rarity tier. Save those for normal gameplay.

Lost Shore Event - No Reward [merged]

People didn’t just get unlucky. Some people were booted from the game, some people’s games crashed.

Also yes, if ANet keeps their logs correctly, they should be able to rectify this. How do you get credit for an event if your participation isn’t recorded somewhere?

People who were there deserve the uniques, at least (shell and bag). Also, having opened the chest is also an action that needs to be recorded (so you don’t open the chest a second time). Properly kept logs would contain this information – event participation and chest looting. Hand out the rewards to people who have the event participation, but not the chest.

A system for running the loot tables and sending mail is painfully simple to make. Look at all the mail we received in the past 2 events. We get mail with items all the time from the game itself, through the gem store, when you make a new character, during events.

It’s not hard to compensate people, but if records for event participation and chest looting are erased when someone logs out, that’s it. I doubt the latter, however, since chests are limited to once a day. It should only wipe on rollover, and even then they should have a pre-rollover backup.

This isn’t fixing every little accident, this is patching up an inherent flaw in how they chose to conduct this event. Items should’ve been mailed to players, or handed out by an NPC, instead of in a chest that can despawn. It’s their own lack of foresight re: the fact some people would die or disconnect and be unable to reach the chest. It’s also not “free” things – these people participated in the event in spite of lag and other technical difficulties. They deserve the reward as much as everyone else.

FTR, I did reach the chest.

I also missed the chest. I had died in an area no one could reach me to rez me. I waypointed and the chest disappeared in front of me. I just bought this game and am starting to wonder if it was worth it.

Not even remotely the same issue as the people posting in this thread. Complaining about one event where you likely died due to inexperience (just going on an assumption, you probably stood on the death location of the Ancient Karka and fell into the middle of the lava) is a pretty poor basis for demanding a make up reward. But sure, blame the developers and judge the game with a skewed perception due to a player error. Staging this fight as a one-time event was obviously an awful decision, but no one can be blamed for you dying but yourself.

Don’t be like that. Most people here wouldn’t even have an issue if the despawn for the chest wasn’t so fast. You should get a chance to loot for participating, no matter how bad you did.

Also, there were spots even before the end where you could just randomly drop into the lava (I know, I did, and very nearly missed the chest because of it – I died just as the ancient karka was about to go down and arrived again just as the cutscene was finishing). It’s poor level design, not player error. Also, even if OP fell into the lava pool after ancient karka was defeated, allowing for an area where res’ing isn’t possible at the end of a one-time only event with a chest that despawns is bad level design also.

Problem would’ve been easily solved by having items mailed to players instead of in a chest.

Same on Maguuma, apparently he activated once immediately after the patch, but isn’t reactivating.

The patch seems to have shut Blingg up, at least. Checking for broken events rn.

Consortium Chest

DONT buy them there a wast of money, bought 20 got NOTHING but some stupid shoulder skins. Used the mystic forge to get 4 more chest and didn’t even get shoulder skins from them.

How did you make more at the forge??

use what you get out of the chests in the mystic forge. 3 skins and one of each of the new crafting mats.

Or 1 of each shoulder or 1 of each breather and a karka shell.

The dungeon isn’t at fault, your lack of luck finding skillful people to run it with is at fault. How is the dungeon responsible for your teammates’ lack of skill, inability to follow orders, sucking at jumping puzzles, and lying about having a full set of exotics?

Why are there no waypoints in FoM?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

neon.4863

I’d say waypoints are unnecessary… but then there is dying in places the party can’t reach and the fact you can’t warp back into the dungeon if you leave or get disconnected. So the mechanic isn’t really working as intended atm – sometimes you’ll die because of things outside of your control, too, like lag, and bring the entire team down because you can’t be brought back. Good idea gone bad imo. Might as well have a permadeath mode instead.

Fractals Difficulty

I agree that a more sensible mechanic would be to have party leader select difficulty level, or even just call a vote on difficulty level based on their own max. That way you don’t risk being unable to find a group for your own difficulty, provided you’re willing to bring someone who hasn’t done lower difficulties in.

In my opinion, Fractals of the Mist is a complete fail.

Yeah I know but I must have terrible luck. Also kinda confusing why people are posting its working for them when I am posting the very opposite of bending over back wards just to do this stupid new dungeon and not enjoying it one bit.

Its not working for me and I am being denied content.

You’re not being denied content just because you can’t seem to find a good group to play with? That’s like me saying I’m being denied content because I suck at sPvP or couldn’t find a good zerg in WvW.

And here I thought nothing could drive me insane as much as Tick, tock, the mouse ran up the clock, and time swallowed it whole – tail and all! did…

Augh don’t remind me!

Why is it always the Asura driving us crazy?

I couldn’t spot traps, myself (not a single one of them) so I kept running into them. Unsure if it was a render problem or lag on my end though since my latency today’s been a joke.

Ohh okay – since we didn’t get to the boss (because the wisps kept disappearing before we could bring them in) we didn’t know that. Thanks for the heads up!

And yeah, next time we’ll bring speed+condi removal skills/traits, we just went in completely blind and were stumped because everyone was slow and crippled whoops.

Edit: Wait what this wasn’t my topic why is the first post gone I was replying to another person who was also having difficulty.

I don’t know about impossible but it does seem unreasonably difficult without traited speed or swiftness since you seem to have to bring all 3 wisps at the same time (and between crippling traps and the distance the wisps spawn at sometimes, they always vanish before we can put them in, let alone all at the same time). Went in with a party of 5, nobody with traited speed, and we only managed to get one wisp in (after which it quickly reset and the next cycle one wisp was too far for us to make it). Started getting lag after and gave up.

Edit: Also, idk if this is a bug, but Mossman would stealth and then come back with full HP, making it impossible to kill.

+1, had issues with one of our members getting kicked out by the server and being unable to get back in.

An easy way to get Captain's Commendations.

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: neon.4863

neon.4863

Items you can trade them in for:

Black Lion Key – 285 commendations
Crude Salvage Kit – 1 commendation
Disassembler 3BEK Kit – 25 commendations (salvage kit; 250 uses, 20% chance of upgrades, 10% chance of rares)
Sturdy Copper Harvesting Sickle – 4 commendations (same as copper harvesting sickle, but with 250 uses)
Sturdy Copper Logging Axe/Mining Pick – 2 commendations (same as above)
Iron Harvesting Tools – Sickle 9, Axe/Pick 5
Steel – Sickle 15, Axe/Pick 7
Darksteel – Sickle 20, Axe/Pick 10
Mithril – Sickle 27, Axe/Pick 13
Orichalcum – Sickle 67, Axe/Pick 33

All tools have 250 uses, otherwise are identical to their regular (non-sturdy) versions.

Salvage kit may be the only one that’s worth it imo, saves bag space.

Edit: Got kicked out of LA before I could check for weap prices ):

Son of Edit: Okay, back in. Weapons:

25 commendations for lowest tier rare (level 40)
40 for middle tier rare (level 60)
50 for top tier rare (level 80)
1300 for top tier exotic (level 80)

Pretty cheap to get some to transmute.

Event lag [Merged]

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: neon.4863

I knew I’d come to the forums and find posts like these… and I’m usually playing devil’s advocate, but this time I really have nothing positive to say. The lag makes the whole thing unplayable. I went in with my level 35 Elementalist (I don’t have any level 80s, 35 is my highest level) and I got no experience whatsoever from mobs (no credit for a single kill) because of the lag and skills not firing. Chat messages are taking ~2 minutes to deliver, if they even deliver. I went down and couldn’t activate any healing skills. I was going around reviving people but ultimately I just gave up and sat outside the area of the event.

This is unplayable. Please make sure you properly stress test your servers before trying to push massive events like this. It doesn’t sound like a single person is able to play this smoothly. If the Sunday event is going to be like this – and devs have mentioned you just need to participate to get the reward – I’m probably not getting anything even if I do participate because I can’t even get credit for a single kill, in spite of being in the fray trying to autoattack things.

Please, take your server capacity into account or just make more dungeons/instanced events until more efficient servers are available.

Edit: Okay, it just ended and I did get credit for participating (silver). Still, I don’t feel like that was much of a participation at all.
