I like the hammer and mace 5, great skills. I an with that a while, but ultimately i kept returning to greatsword simply for its manouverability and ranged cc ability.
But yeah, my ultimate spec for small man WvW is a toss up between GS /sword/shield
or greatsword/ mace/shield.
Problem with hammer is it gets negated by stability entirely and doesn’t synergise well with frenzy and rush for a burst. Also i like to keep my adrenaline at level 3 all the time for the heal tick and damage bonus. The only time i use my adrenaline is to peel off a player with the sword adrenal if someone is in trouble.
I honestly don’t know where to start with your post. Do you really play a mesmer and think warriors are strong?
One hundred blades is useless outside bullrush+frenzy.
Not very tanky at all. If a warrior wants to go ‘tanky’ (which is actually not possible) he ends up hitting for nothing. (unlike guardian…)
You’re probably thinking of a hammer warrior in regards to cc. Warriors have a few knockdowns, but the timer is fairly long. Same amount off cc as an elemetalist.
Easily run away? maybe with greatsword spec+ sword in 2ndty.
Resurrect themselves? haha. only if you leave them alone for 20 seconds after they die.
The reason they arnt godmode…..is that they are vulnerable to all cc. You put them more than 300 units from a target they do 0dps. Everyone else can kill at range. So considering the amount of snares in this game any decent player (half decent) can keep a warrior off them all the time.
You seem to think warriors have access to all their weapons and traits at once.
It’s funny, because my guildie friend plays a ranger, and he doesn’t have any issues beating other players after the ‘pummeling’ you described. None at all in fact.
So you want to reduce warriors from the least desirable class to be picked in spvp to……an even less desirable one? I’m sure that will hurt SOO much…
What we have here is a clear case of ‘Waahh!. I don’t want to spend 20 points in wilderness survival which gives me an instant means of protection against warriors and I don’t even have to click anything!!, I just want to put all my points into damage and crit so i can spam button 1 shortbow!’
Am i right?
Haha. The best fun in WvW is when you run with a few friends and beat much greater numbers so you have to spec accordingly. 1v1 builds are better in this respect, or something which compliments the other classes your friends are playing.
Your whirling axe build adds nothing. The only weapon which is team oriented is the horn. Axe 2+5 do very little, axe 3 misses too much and the timer is too long. Axe 5 as said is so easily escaped, does little damage, and is on a 25 second timer.
Double axe can’t snare multiples, it can’t get you to opponents quicker and it can’t stun. Do you know how important it is to be able to stun someone? Someone going to stomp your friend – sword leap/stun combo when bullscharge is down? Wtf will axes do? or a horn?
A warrior needs to be a mix of survivability, damage and CC.
When a thief or another warrior rushes you and your endure pain is down, or a ranger starts peppering you with a haste + bow 1, watch how you wish you had a shield+reflect projectiles on instead of a horn to toot.
You came here with boasts about how wonderful your spec was and how we should all use it, when really it’s just a zerg surfing spec. When people pointed out all its flaws you’re in tears.
You don’t even have frenzy slotted, the most useful warrior utility there is. Double time attacks yes, but also double time rez, and stomps.
It does.
It may well be you think you have the stability buff up, but it’s been removed and you suffer the fear effect. I find this fighting necros usually. I run through one of the many aoes thinking i’ve pressed stability, but infact it’s been removed instantly.
You can close with bulls charge…but what then?. Spam your weapon 1 button and hope you arn’t snared/knockedback/stunned/immobilised?
Because if you hadn’t noticed snare seems to be a constant prescence in this game as a melee. You probably don’t as a necro since you put out so many conditions and have viable ranged offence, but believe me, if i’m not being snared by some aoe, some ranged ability or everything else i’m amazed.
You’ve clearly never used throw bolas. If you had you would never have suggested it. It misses 99/100 times. The only time it works reliably is if you bulls rush and then use it after they’re knocked down. Never ever use it at range. Waste of time.
Signet of stamina? a 45 second signet which slightly increases your endurance regen. You still can only do 2 dodges in a row and have to wait slightly less time before you can dodge again. How exactly would that stop kiting?
Charge – have you ever used charge?. It stops short of a character or goes past them, you can be snared during it or immobilised. Best use of charge? To get as far away from a fight as you can.
I can see you play a necro. You’re tired of getting stomped so you want to nerf all the classes who stomp you.
Actually all classes have accesss to invulnerabilities.
Warrior-endure pain + shield block (90 second timer/30 second timer)
Ranger – Protect me/camoflage (60 second timer)
Guardian – retaliaton/bubble/signets – SO many ways to negate damage all on timers <60 seconds.
elemenatlist – mist form/arcane shield/lightning dagger spec. (75 seconds for shields, dagger knockback and escape abilities < 1 minute)
engineer – that thing where they shrink (cant be bothered to look it up). (60 seconds)
Mesmer – SO many abilities to stop damage/evade attacks on <1 minut etimers.
Necro – Spectral walk (60 seconds), Reapers protection (90 seconds), stand inside fear marks?
Thief – roll for initiative.
So yes…everyone has the ability to avoid a 4 second haste burst. You just choose not to spec for it.
If i choose not to take a stability ability i’m not suprised when I get knocked down/feared/knocked back/stunned all the time. I don’t come here crying that cc needs to be removed from the game.
A guardian who can’t beat a warrior?
Guardians are like warriors on steroids. Both in defence and attack.
You may have less hps but easily make up for it in abilities to avoid damage and yet can still output a hefty assault.
If you go all attack as a warrior you all over to eveything. If you go all defence, you are still pretty fragile but do 0 damage to anyone.
Viable ranged options? You mean rifle? Rifle is a single target, no real cc, no aoe no utility weapon with long cooldowns. I still don’t understand why people like it. I roll over rifle warriors like they arn’t even there. Roll a ranger if that’s your playstyle.
Dual axe is a terrible set up for WvW. Axe 5 is on much too long of a timer to be useful and honestly does very little damage, and you risk being during it.
2 axes are really just pve, or at most equip one axe in Mh of second set, so after you build up a full adrenaline you have sigil of intelligence on the axe to get the guaranteed crit eviscerate on the weapon swap.
You have some hps, but you’re still glass cannon. I used to run mobile strikes, but it still lacked defence imho. Using 15 in defence for adrenaline healing + healing signet gives a 600 hps tick every few seconds at full bar. This is up pretty much all the time on me.
Also the reflect missiles on shield block is amazing. Destroys rangers and rifle warriors.
Or covert it to turtle and up your defence by 200 on snare.
Greatsword is just a better weapon, the ranged snare coupled with leg specialist gives you so much control in fights. It has 2 escapes (one being an evade) and a potential for great burst. Just no reason not to have it if you’re going melee.
The only good thing an axe has is the button 1 damage. everything else is pretty lame.
I’ve tried every single weapon spec with a warrior. Lots of trait combinations. I always end up having to spec frenzy, no matter if it’s with hammer, sword, greatsword or axe.
The reason is a warrior is completely kitable. He suffers from knockbacks, snares, immobilises and out of every class suffers the biggest dps drop if he isn’t next to his target.
Warrior frenzy is 4 seconds of haste + 50 percent increase damage TAKEN…(did you read that properly?) every 60 seconds.
Without haste the HB attack is pretty much useless, unless the person stands there for the entire 4 seconds (never).
So you want to negate any dps a warrior has in its entirety.
I never have issues with other players having haste, that’s why i carry a shield in the 2nd set + escape abilities. Are you really having issues avoiding people for 4 seconds?
Whenever I see an anti haste post all I can see is ‘I don’t want to spec my character with any sort of defence/escape abilities, I just want to go all out attack and because the only time I die is to haste thieves or warriors so could you nerf those please because then i’d dominate everything…’
Honestly those numbers the first guy is quoting, 25 k on squishies?
I would love to see screenies.
Rifle is only good for WvW, just due to the zergy nature.
You will get eaten alive in Spvp/tpvp. I can’t get enough of killing rifle warriors in spvp. Just to prove how utterly innefective they are when targetted.
Lets look at downed state button 1 damage:
Warrior : Damage 122 throw a rock at your target.
Thief: Damage 134 : hits 3 target apply a cripple to all 3.
Ranger: Damage 92 with a 213 bleed
Necro: Damage 69 with a 92 heal component.
Mesmer: Damage 202 with a 5 second confusion (damage 65 on skill use)
Guardian: Damage 73
Engineer : 128 with a 233 bleed +chill+weakness
Elementalist :damage 195 +vulnerability.
I can see the recast time on throw rock is 1/4 of a second…but really?? Compared to everything else? Just wow…
Warriors are what everyone else should be brought into line with.
They’re actually pretty balanced. If you go all attack you’re very fragile, if you go super defensive you do 0 damage. Their infamous HB+frenzy+bullsrush requires 3 abilities to be up (one on a 60 second timer) and can be avoided and leaves the warrior taking 50 percent more damage from all sources for 4 seconds.
Without frenzy HB is almost unusable. Unless the person stays there for the whole duration it’s not happening, at best you get 3 swings off, but never the final big swing. Greatsword button 1 damage is less than 1H weapon damage.
It’s the mesmers/guardians/thieves which dominate simply because they don’t need to make the sacrifice in abilities. They retain the ability to do damage yet due to multiple escapes/retaliation/boon removal/debuffs/shields don’t have issues with defence.
Heavy armour seems to play very little part in damage mitigation I find, most likley because of all the ocndition damage and aoe debuffs flying around constantly.
@zid.
Really? that’s funny, because when I see someone get moa formed i’ll make a beeline for them knowing the have no stun breakers/heal available and finish them off in 5 seconds and there’s nothing they can do.
At that moment the odds of the fight just swung in our favour. It’s that strong.
LOL
no one would use moa if stunbreaks countered it
You basically sum up what is wrong with mesmer thinking.
You can’t understand why being in moa is such a game changer and frustrating for the other player.
Look at all other elites. How would you feel if the rangers binding roots was unremovable and you couldn’t destroy it or get out of it for the full duration?
As it stands i can finish it in a button press.
Or if the elementalist tornado ignored stability. Would you like being perma knocked down for its duration?
It’s a lame ability with no counter.
A favourite of the mesmer right now is the shatter build. So they generate 3 clones, leap (which immobilises you for 2 seconds) at you and use blurred frenzy shattering all 3 clones at the same time. It generates almost as much damage as a damage specced Hundred blades+frenzy.
But where as a warrior needs to be specced glass cannon, have frenzy timer up/bullscharge + has to take 50 percent more damage during it (so can run it every 60 seconds) the mesmer gets total immunity from damage/cc and can do it every 15 seconds or so.
Imagine being able to do a frenzied HB every 15 seconds and be immune to everything whilst doing it.
This is why using GS 3 well and trying to destroy clones quickly is important, as well as popping endure pain (our 90 second recharge 3 second immunity from damage…) or shield block at the right times.
Mesmers are above all classes at the moment. Their damage is too high for a class which so many defensive abilities and their range. Some say their counter is a staff elementalist for constant aoe to remove illusions.
Shame staff elementalists fall over to all other classes.
The fast you think they are lifted from LoL is pretty funny really, they are pretty basic…none of these abilities are LoL exclusives or anything :p
Really? The fact that Caitlyns ultimate involves her kneeling down, taking aim for a few seconds then firing off a high powered shot at a target with a rifle.
The warrior killshot involves kneeling down, taking aim and firing a high powered shot at a target with a rifle.
Greatsword 3 invovles spinning a short distance with a 2h sword in a directional arrow.
Tryndameres move involves spinning a short distance with a 2h sword in a directional arrow.
I could go on, they’re pretty much carbon copy moves and animations from LoL. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, it’s just very evident that the warrior designer is a fan.
If you can stun break basilisk poison you should be able to stun break moa.
Axe is probably the worst 2ndry slot.
You lose the sword mobility + immobilise, with mace you get the stun + mace 3 and block.
With axe yes you get an eviscerate, but sometimes that hit for 2-3k max and i’;ve just lost a full adrenal bar.
Glass cannon builds are not the way to go as a warrior. I can’t count the times sword leap has gotten me out of danger.
Ok.
1) – Don’t be a fragile. Don’t be the glass cannon guy. I run with 30k hps, and decent toughness and 50 percent base crit. That allows you to weather their burst/ranged damage whilst you get to them to actually hit them.
2) – Don’t bother with the target (ctrl +T)honestly. When they dissapear it goes anyway, so you’ll be looking for a target wasting time, then trying to retarget. Just play against enough and honestly you can see which one is them as generally they’ll be the one trying to get distance on you/dodge/strafe. Use the target function if you’re telling your team who to focus.
3) – Kill every illusion/phantasm you see as you advance on them, that is where most of their damage comes from. Use GS3 to plow through them. Throw GS 4 at him through illusions.
4) – save dodge rolls for when all the images begin to move towards you for the shatter.
5) – If they blow haste field/chaos field/any sort of aoe field don’t stand in it…just back off/get some distance then come back in.
6) – Never use bullrush/freny/hb off the bat. I generally end up using it late in the battle after they’ve used their escapes.
7) if they moa you (which happens alot), and despite mesmers saying ‘OHH!!! just dodge when that happens!!!’ You will get moad. mainly because they can start the cast whilst still in stealth. All you can do is run away. Don’t do anything else, run and break LOS.
8) I run with sword and board 2ndry. I find the sword leap and shield stun +block overrides anything else in general utility. Mace/shield is better in some situations though (mainly against those people who are going to melee you and not run away constantly).
9) If it’s a 2v1 don’t bother. It’s SO much work and focus to kill a mesmer with a warrior, adding any extra element into that will destroy you.
10) Run endure pain to cope with some bursts.
11) If you think the battle is going badly just run. Mesmers really have no ability (save blink) to catch/snare you. GS3 then 5 /sword 2 out of there.
12) Abilities to watch for : ‘Blurred frenzy’ they look like they’re swishing their sword around violently, they take no damage, and do damage for 2 seconds but remain immobile (it’s up every 8-10 seconds seconds (as appose to our shield block ,2 seconds block, no damage , up every 30 seconds….seems fair…..) . Soon as they do this just move/dodge and reattack.
Chaos field – (any pink/purple circle looking thing with stuff happening in it) – as above
That little purple bubble they envelop themselves is chaos armour, up every 35 seconds, lasts 5 seconds. Keep attacking if they do this. It’s not immunity, it doesn’t give stability so you can still stun them. It also marks them out for 5 seconds as clones won’t copy this.
All in all…they are (bar a guardian) a warriors hardest fight imho. Sometimes it seems their escapes and get out of jail cards are endless, yet they still do as much damage as you do in melee from 1200 away.
Considering the gap closer never lands on target due to a broken mechanic and to use sword 3 you pretty much need to be on top of them, and even if it misses it goes on cool down combining them doesn’t seem particularly overpowering.
I use multiple combinations of weapons depending on what i’m facing. I’ve merely noticed that sword 2 always needs to be combined with another cooldown to be effective and consequently the damage component of sword 2 never happens.
How many times does axe 3 miss, or sword 4 and bolas……having a consistant gap closer is essential for a warrior. This is why equipping bulls charge has become almost mandatory in non ranged specs.
Also..sword 3 really? A single target melee range snare on a 15 second timer.
As a warrior as soon as I walk into a fight i’m snared from some aoe/ranged ability/trap. I’m generally pretty amazed when i’m not snared by something or other.
Heh. Would be nice if GS 3 spun us through scenery like Tryndameres move does.
The Z axis kills so many moves.
Skills which don’t work when there’s any Z axis difference: Bullsrush, Rush, savage leap,GS 4 and bolas.
In WvW with all the hills Rush is hilarious…you end up stopping short of your target and running in place for a few seconds and hit nothing. With bullsrush you seem to slow down and your target just keeps on moving.
Bolas….just makes me cry…
Anyone else notice this, moves lifted directly from LoL.
As an avid LoL player alot of moves are pretty obvious:
Tryndamere – GS 3 + endure pain utility.
Pantheon – Sword 2, Underwater spear 2.
Caitlyn – Killshot + reverse version of Rifle 5 +rifle 3 (combined).
Olaf – Axe 1+3
Garen – Axe 5
Ashe – Longbow 2 +5
I’m sure there’s more…
Or is it just me?
Wish we were as tough as mundo wearing 3 warmogs…
Joined an spvp random match yesterday. Other team had 7 thieves and 1 mesmer.
My team, 3 thieves, 1 elementalist and 3 guardians (and me, a warrior).
It’s getting pretty ridiculous.
From my thoughts and other peoples what say we change sword two to leap + 3 sec snare.
Then change sword 3 to something else, like a 2 second disarm. (fits with the whole 1h sword fencing idea).
Reason being as mentioned. Sword two has a delay when you land, so it never lands you on top of a target, but where it was when you started the leap, and then you pause for a little when you hit the ground, so they target will be out of range for any follow up manouvere.
I hate rifle/longbow on the warrior. Seems such a lackluster choice, it’s like a pulling weapon on Daoc (like axe toss or crossbow, no one ever really specs it).
But in melee the problem a warrior has is his dps is reliant on being in melee range. We’re in fact the only class this applies to. Everyone else’s spammable moves have range or close them onto the target (heartseeker). You have to pretty much be on top of the target as a warrior or you’ll see a miss.
I can savage leap someone then hit snare or sword adrenal, but it will miss every time if they’re moving, as savage leap pauses you for 1/2 a second when you land, and since they’re still moving any follow up move will miss. (so you generally have to savage leap > shield slam > then do a move.
Warriors need better weapon 1 skill damage or better damage mitigation in general to account for their susceptibility to snares/immobilise. We’re the only class who (unless you’re wielding a rifle/longbow) on a root loses 90 percent of your dps.
I get greatswords mesmers hitting me from a mile away for 3x my damage…yet they only have about 5k less hps, and multiple ways to escape if I do reach them.
Something just isn’t correct in the way warriors were designed. I know they were trying to stay away from the tank/healer/mage thing….but if you expect a class to have to be in melee range to do any damage, you need to give it the tools/abilities/defence to do that.
Getting rid of Hb would be a bad idea. Primarily because GS 1 is terrible damage. Lowest Button 1 damage chain of all the weapons (apart from the longbow….)
So you sacrifice the power of using 2 signets for one signet on a 2H weapon, but with no gain in dps to compensate.
Hundred blades is the only decent damage from a greatsword, and I find most of my GS play revolves in clever way of setting up a HB move. (i’m not just talking about bullrush/frenzy/HB). A non frenzied HB is so hard to pull off as it takes so kitten long, rare that I ever get the last hit in honestly.
They do need to change the greatsword adrenal. Has anyone ever actually used it?
Even if it was might instead of fury I wouldn’t use it.
They should change it to an aoe cripple. Call it ‘Ankle slice’ or something and give it 500 radius?. So not an op’d damage ability, but allowing you to support your team, giving you a way to escape attackers more effectively etc.
I must record it next time i activate reflect missile traited shield block and watch rifle warriors kill themselves with a crit killshot.
But if you enjoy it have fun. I see quite alot of very bad rifle warriors out there and honestly they’re the most easy to deal with warrior spec.
I agree buddy.
I now play the warrior as get in, do some damage and escape as soon as possible. Unless endure pain and shield stance is up you’ll fall over faster than most other classes because we don’t really have any constant decent damage mitigating abilities in our lines.
I don’t even bother with fighting guardians 1v1. The good ones just do more melee damage than we can and take way more punishment. In fact the best way to deal with them with melee weapons is using the greatsword 3 then 4 and just avoid melee altogether. Whittle them down and wiat for them to use their big abilities, then bullrush/HB when able, get away and keep going.
I’m thinking of equipping poison on weapon swap just to see if it helps.

Don’t be the rifle/longbow spammer pewpew guy.
You’re a warrior, melee weapons or go home.
Me and two friends rolled into WvW last night, our side were at a standoff with a slightly larger zerg, just trading pewpews. So f-this I thought!, told my buds in vent to follow me up, knocked fear/stomp/endure pain into utilities and sword leapt into the middle of their masses hitting fear+endure pain, then a stomp for good measure then activating shield block (traited with reflect) and then I greatsworded 3 , sword 2 then GS 5 out of the mass.
By this time our side took the oppotunity and swept in culling the enemy. That is the beauty of the warrior. By the way, i’m level 58 in blue/greens (spend way too much time in spvp).
It’s do or die. This is why I abhor rifle warriors.
Really?
When i checked on mobs I see one stack when i use it. Maybe I was expecting a stack of 4 straight away.
Will check it again tonight.
Still much of a muchness on damage though.
One thing I will say about this spec…feels good if you can kill anyone with it.
It’s just not a good spec.
Sword 4 has 1 bleed. Not the 4 as stated. You may as well go sword/axe to stack more bleeds (with 30 percent chance to bleed on crits + runes).
Also condition builds on a warrior don’t work as well:
1) You have to stay on your target to build up bleeds.
2) Alot of the other professions have condition removal/swap. So negating all your damage in a keypress. Or putting it back on you.
Because you need to stay on top of the target to keep the damage going, you end up taking alot of damage as well.
Also rifle adrenal is horrible and easy to avoid. (i played up against this exact build yesterday on my GS/axe,shield warrior). I watched him switch to rifle and knock me back, and begin the killshot kneel. So i swapped to shield (traited with reflect shot on) and he proceeded to crit himself for 6k. Great stuff.
It’s just alot of work for very little in return. As a warrior you need burst + mobility + survivability. Swords do not give that. The best thing about swords is sword 2 and sword adrenal for hitting then switching to HB.
Sadly it’s the only elite worth taking.
Also it’s a selfish elite and no help to your team.
Rampage is just lol. It makes you into a slightly tougher warrior, with no access to heal and crappy abilities. If i go up against a warrior who uses it, i’ll just walk away and come back when it’s over since they have no mobility and can be immobilised.. ‘Please fight me whilst rampage is up!!!!’ – he probably says.
The banner is on a HUGE cooldown, and has a lengthy cast time. It also suffers from the downsides of all other banners, ie: being pretty rubbish in running fights.
So what else is there to take?
Would be nice just to have our traits actually working correctly.
I can’t see them nerfing HB. It’s sadly the only reason to take a warrior in tpvp….if that. Outside of frenzy it never hits for the full amount due to it’s tiny range.
You can line of sight, but you’re out the fight 10 seconds hoping no one follows you. 10 seconds in pvp is a lifetime.
I watched the numbers flying off me from a greatsword mesmer, they were hitting for the same damage as my greatsword 1 hits for, and I have to be on top of a target.
And chaos storm? That’s like having a really good utility skill in a 30 sec cooldown. It’s a complete fight changer. I would take that on my warrior if it were a minute cooldown elite. I played mesmer in beta as my main. That skill would turn whole zerg fights around.
Actually a thief is more a warriors paper.
Thief steal > Whirlwind+evade > dagger storm/thieves guild > heartseeker spam.
Since you can’t actually do any damage to them during those first 12 seconds your only tactic is 1) take damage the whole time 2) use up shield block, endure pain and dodge twice (but still take a few seconds of damage, and then you’re completely defenceless for haste/heartseeker spam combo.
OR….just run away until he’s stopped spinning, which is honestly the best tactic currently. I swear thieves faces must light up seeing warriors, free 6 seconds of mobile damage and invulnerability!!!! yay!!!
I don’t even need to target them to track the real one anymore.
Bad mesmers are straight forward, and you see alot of them as everyone wants to roll a mesmer thief or guardian in spvp to feel godly. But they still take off a chunk of health. I had a mesmer to 10 percent in a fight and I was still on 90 percent. He moa’d me, and there was nothing I could do. I died to his burst in a daze/stun lock of clones/phantoms. It’s an I win button with no comeback. If there’s no where to run/hide behind it’s effectively a 10 second stun with no stunbreak.
Ever fought a mesmer with a portal running? Fight going badly? Portal out!
Everyone has stories where they beat bad players. A good mesmer just won’t lose. If you can’t kill someone in a 10 second moa form, then what are you doing?
Fix sword 4 please!! 1 stack of bleeding still??
Endure pain to 5 seconds please.
Last night I bullrushed—>hundred blades combo, and all I got were ‘missed’ messages on my screen. This happened several times, really frustrating. I honestly think the range to hit on greatsword needs to be larger. Other weapons as well to account for latency/lag on clients.
Gs 5 Still misses/goes past mobs/opponents.
Sword 2, GS 3/5 will still sometimes send me back into the fight despite being faced the other way with nothing selected.
No difference on my stats with traits which increase crit chance/damage related to adrenal level. No idea if this is working or not?
If you have runes which give you a stack of might on a kill and precision on a kill, only the might one will stack. Not both? Intended?
The way i’ve started playing the warrior is using greatsword/shield+sword in WvW, replacing the sword with axe in spvp.
Key thing…..Get out when you start to take damage/heal bar drops to half. You’re being foccussed, and you will probably go down soon. Use GS3/5 to escape. Drag them out, chances are they won’t chase. If they do….you have the means to keep running. Let your health tick back up and then turn around and go at it again.
NEVER use bullrush/frenzy right off. Save it. Use bullrush with no frenzy to make them blow escapes, Your bullrush will be up before their stunbreaker is back up.
Let them blow their key abilities. Control the fight, don’t be afraid to get some distance when they blow elite (like thieves guild/daggers), don’t just stand their taking the damage. Kite for 20 seconds then attack. Use a snare to distance yourself until an ability comes back up. Since I’ve started playing my warrior like this my success in most situations has gone up.
Mesmers and guardians are still stupidly opd though. But hey, every class has issues with them.
The issue with the warrior in spvp is not that the warrior is that bad a class. It’s just that everyone else is just so much more effective in all the roles. (Let’s be honest, you could just have a team of mesmers and guardians and you’d win 9/10 matches).
Our weapon skills are mostly single target oriented. When you’re attacking a point there’s so much aoe damage flying about and boon strips etc the warrior has to
1) Be right in the middle of all that .
2) Stay in melee range of a target.
No one else has to worry about that range. Thieves heartseeker spam leaps you to the target. Guardians spam scepter attacks. So the only person who realistically has to be on top of another class to do damage/use alot of weapon abilities, is the warrior.
I can’t count the number of times my sword adrenal has missed or my hundred blades has missed. I’ve even missed it after bullrushing someone(many times) due to latency?/lag? who knows!
If there’s any sort of z axis difference in your opponent your GS 4 will miss, as will your mace 5, your bola etc. Your sword 5 and mace 2 are single target and block one attack…just one. I once had the trait ‘gain might on blocking’. I put it up during a point fight. I stacked something like 75 stacks of might in 3 seconds(or something foolishly high?), so my mace 2 would have prevented 1 of those….
It’s good 1v1….but how often do you get those.
The banner set is terrible. Huge cooldowns, clunky, most fights are running fights so impossible to stay in the range of a banner in WvW, if you pick it up you reduce your dps by 90 percent to gain 1 lackluster ability on banner 2.
Honestly the banner should equip on the warriors back (a la shogun style), So he can carry it round and be able to use all his usual abilities. OR…make banners part of the F key system if equipped.
Warriors need more closing abilities, more ways to keep people reliably in range since nearly every single class can kite well and still do good damage from afar. That’s where it falls down.
Just too many of them.
Two of us chased a couple who ran back to their keep instead of engaging us, then suddenly 7 people leapt down from the keep walls. Keep in mind this keep hadn’t been under attack for many hours.
We had no idea why they would even be in there….
So apparently what thieves are doing during the whirlwind is dodging constantly. Due to their traited endurance gain they can dodge 4-5 times in a row so giving them complete invulnerability during the initial whirlwind….
So that would explain why all i see are evade signs whenever I try and counter.
So yes, if a thief chooses not to dodge during the whirlwind you can hit him……or he can just keep dodging non stop.
Really? Charge them with my stun?
My shield stun? Or bulls rush. You know thieves carry stun breakers as well yes? How many good thieves do you know sit inside a stun.
Let’s see : shadowstep breaks stun, quickness breaks stun, roll for initiative breaks stun, infiltrators signet breaks stun.
You’re really telling me out of those 4 you won’t have any equipped? I can see two i’d have all the time.
Wow…so much badness in this thread from thieves…
8 seconds? If you played a warrior you would know endure pain works for 3 seconds, not 5, it;s on a 90 second timer….the same timer as dagger storm.
Even if you have a full adrenaline bar on the sword the dps from a sword won’t kill anyone. The only thing it’s useful for is rooting for other people or switching for a GS burst.
But you can’t have GS as you’re meant to have a rifle equipped?
But really..swords?…..their damage is completely bleed reliant, so the most easily cleared in the game. Thief dodge traited clears cripples.
Oh I did play a thief just to see. It was just too easy. I decided to only use keys 1+2 on daggers and dagger storm. The effort it takes to kill with a thief compared to a warrior was laughable.
Dagger storm gives bleeding/cripple/stability+damage. So you’re saying I should try and melee a spinning thief. Whilst crippled constantly by a refeshing cripple and he’s moving constantly. How exactly can I achieve that? Please..just stop embarrassing yourself.
So i’ve got to have endure pain, stun breakers, anti kite abilities, be using a sword and shield and a rifle, specced in my traits for anti kiting build, yet still have enough damage output to do actual damage and health to survive the initial unavoidable attacks?
Oh…on top of all that i’m meant to have access to aoe damage? With my sword/shield and rifle combo?
I didn’t realise warriors had so many trait point sto spend and could equip 10 weapons to switch between. Also apparently we have infinite dodges.
If as a thief you can’t kite constantly you should go back to pve. Shortbow 5? Unhappy with how a fights going? Shadow refuge, 2 of those and goodbye opponent.
You don’t even understand how stolen whirlwind works yet you seem to think you have skills as a thief.
When someone lists multiple abilities with impossible builds needed to beat a class that person has just proven my point.
I didn’t even mention the 6-10k backstab opener.

Oh I have no doubt he’s a great player.
Being more skilled than the next guy doesn’t change the numbers coming off abilities.
Mesmers are so good everywhere, not just in khylo. You get the luxury of picking and choosing fights.
So pray tell, as a mesmer have you ever lost to any class apart from another mesmer? If that?
The thief died alot. Surely replacing him with a guardian would have meant an easier game?
Also…the numbers you get on your shatter/unload burst. Just ridiculous. You didn’t even have to use any utilities to get that combo! Yet people still cry about the HB warriors….Also, beating a thief and a guardian at the same time, and still having unused abilities at the end of the fight…..
All seems balanced with mesmers….
You will never ever win against a competent thief.
If all their tricks are up (steal and their ultimate), then you won’t win. Doesn’t matter how good you are or what abilities you have.
The battle will go like this:
Steal (3-4k) → Whirlwind (no damage taken, stability) (3-4k) → dagger storm (7-8k) (or thieves guild + them attacking from range(8k+)
So..even before you’ve been able to attack them once you will have taken about 15k of damage. You could chain shield block and endure pain for 6 seconds of immunity, maybe dropping that to 10k damage but then they can hit haste + pistol whip + immob poison (or heartseeker spam) hitting for 3-4k a hit and then it’s goodbye warrior.
Or they could just kite you with shortbow and caltrop dodges + shadow refuge.
The only way i beat good thieves, i if they’re unloading on someone else first.
I must say it’s getting pretty frustrating facing thieves now. (decent ones, not the ones who are clearly baddies rolling a thief thinking they can just spam HS and win).
All i get is Steal > whirlwind > dagger storm….
Now since I can’t actually attack them for the entire duration of this, and all I can do is take damage for 10-12 seconds(or shield myself for a whole 3 seconds!) by the time they come out of it i’m usually at half health or below, and they still have the backstab + haste + heartseeker/pistolwhip/whatever chain to finish me.
Every single thief does it now. They will actively look for warriors because the steal is is so potent. What other game has thieves seeking out the heavy armour classes to kill?
It doesn’t matter how skilled you are, what weapons you have what cc you can put out if you’re facing abilities where you can’t do any damage to someone, or cc them during it then you will lose. To get axe 5 to do the same you’d need to hit endure pain+stability. That’s two one minute+ utilities used for the same effect.
Oh yes l2p etc in advance…(l2p vs invulnerability for 12 seconds….i’m not sure how apart from running away…but i’m all ears…).
