culling update issues

I get np playing bf3 on high to max settings, I know my machine needs an upgrade, but in gw2 I run everything low – off, and its disappointing that gw2 isn’t run on dx11 or 10, which would probable help alot more ppl out.

Apples to oranges comparison. BF3 doesn’t have literally hundred players around you all doing their thing. The poor little cpu has to take all this information from each of these players and send them back to on your end all in real time. It’s no wonder people have culling issues. That said if the engine supported and took advantage of DX 11 it would improve performance in large battles as it is optimized for todays quad core processors.

I honestly think what’s hurting Blackgate and stopping them from getting these big Xfers was all the forum warrior kitten-talk done all those months ago, and again recently before their second jump to T1. It wasn’t done by any big name or respectable guilds, but done by the overzealous guys who troll forums more than they WvW. Would you bring your top-tier guild to a server that trashed talked and then couldn’t deliver?
.

Spot on. I am from SOR and dealt with SOS back in the day. You guys were nothing but class. BG however, wow! BG had so many forum warriors posting hourly garbage during their stay at T2 it will only give the server a bad name.

My GW2 Home: Sanctum of Rall
Posted on July 18, 2012by Moxie

I’ve spoken on Twitter about how, on my return to Rift, I rejoined my old Rift guild, Gaiscioch. It’s been a blast being back with them, and even though they are a freakishly huge guild, they feel more like a “family” guild than many of the other smaller guilds I’ve been a part of. We’ve been running lowbie Instant Adventures for the lower-level folks, raid rifts and expert rifts and crafting rifts for the 50s, and they have a ton of dungeon and raid runs going on every night. It really and truly is an amazing group of people and a great guild to call home.

Despite the joy, there’s been some sadness in the guild since I last ran with them. One of the long-time members of the guild, Roger “Oldroar” Rall, passed away suddenly last fall. He just stopped appearing online abruptly, and after about two weeks, our GM and a couple of others started trying to track him down to check on him. They spoke to his wife, who said that he had quietly passed away one night. Of course, the news spread like wildfire in the guild, back to former members/alliance members that had played with him during Warhammer and DAoC, and everyone, even those who had never met him, felt a profound sense of loss.

Oldroar was the kind of guy that set the tone and example for the rest of the guild. In-game, he was a calm and collected PvP leader who led his teams to victory while always acting with honor towards the opposing teams. To the men, he was a mentor and an example of how to be a great husband & father, and how to balance those responsibilities with gaming. To the ladies, he was always a gentleman and treated us as equals, with respect and dignity. He was a grandfatherly figure to the kids in the guild, and he was someone that we all could go to for advice not just on game strategies and problems, but real life problems as well. He encouraged us to follow our dreams, to be better people, and to take the high road when others were not. He was our friend, in the truest sense of the word.

He was also the “Voice of Gaiscioch”… you couldn’t miss that radio voice on vent.

Guild Wars 2 was the game he was most excited about. Oldroar, along with many of the veteran players in Gaiscioch, was an avid PvPer, and after hearing about GW2?s WvW/PvP features, as well as all the other playstyles that would be supported, was leading the charge to get a Gaiscioch chapter opened in GW2, posting news and information as it came out and eventually convincing our leadership to open a branch within Guild Wars 2. More than anything, he was looking forward to playing Guild Wars 2 and to seeing our super-diverse family grow and thrive there.

It was decided that we would hold an in-game/ventrilo memorial for him, not in Rift, but in Guild Wars 2 when it opened – it only seemed appropriate. The date & time had been set, the only remaining question was what server to roll on. Our guild decided to start one final Call to Arms for Oldroar: to try to get a GW2 server named for the man that had been so passionate about the game and had done so much for the guild over the years. We wrote letters and sent emails to ArenaNet, telling them about the person he was, the legacy he has left with us, and how much he adored GW2. We asked them to consider naming a server for Roger, a server that we could call home and continue living out his legacy.

This morning, I heard the news that they are indeed implementing “Sanctum of Rall” as a server. I admit that I cried tears of happiness over this. THANK YOU ArenaNet, for being so awesome. You just made a whole lot of people ecstatically happy. We will do our best to make Sanctum of Rall an amazing home for all playstyles and all players that roll there, just as Oldroar would have wanted.

Just ignore those SORe losers, T2 matchup has been the most-replied thread in this forum for many weeks now mainly because SoR can’t accept the fact they are being beaten by BG pugs despite how skilled they think they are.

Speaking of which, the self entitled BEASTGATE server who talked the talk for weeks on end sure ain’t walking the walk in T1, lol.

honestly this is the best I have seen the forums been in a while. The amount of trash talk when BG was here was unbelievable…… SBI and TC have really great sportsmanship, I prefer being in any tiers with great sportsmanship than on tiers with people who decide to laugh at you after fighting 5v1 or how saying doubleteaming in wvw is strategy but start complaining how its unfair when they hit tier 1, its laughable honestly…(its about time someone put bg in their place)

If BG likes to trash talk and accuse their opponents of ganging up or cheating, they should fit right in with SoS and JQ in the T1 thread. !"

Following the T1 thread, BG is getting a lot of flak for their poor tactics on EB. A few posters mentioned they were fighting like they never fought in EB before, haha. Was pretty funny but dead on accurate assessment as they pretty much had free reign at T2 here.

Coming from a T2 server we have faced 2 of the 3 servers here (at least the times I purchased Guild Wars 2). SOS as a server was very classy during their stay at T2 as they moved up the ranks. BG on the other hand were a bunch of kitteny folk and it was obvious these guys had lots of bandwagon server jumpers. As they say, “when the going gets tough…..” It would not surprise me if a large portion of their playerbase leave in droves if the present score rate continues.

Some of the notable quotes by BG during their stay at T2…hilarious!

“We are a different server than last we were at T1…”

scootshoot.6583

Hello fellow WvWers,

I kinda wonder if I’m the only one with a bad taste of the current commander system, you pay 100g (which isn’t really hard to come by imo) and become a commander, but in no way that shows you have the abilities to lead a group, not to mention some people don’t seem to understand the concept of being a commander AT all. Only half of the commanders in my own world are capable of what they do, I’m sure this is an issue in all worlds though.

I kinda wish Anet would pay back all those bought commander and make commander earned in the future, maybe throught influence points (specifically for WvW perhaps), this way your guild HAS to be active in WvW, you will need to be leading a fair amount of players already in WvW before unlocking the commander title.. this is just an idea, but with this idea you’d already have more WvW guilds, perhaps a little less zerging and more tactic etc.. because this game has so many toys to play with and we hardly use them.. and most of all, you’d have players that are used to leading a group and not just buy the commander title for “lulz” because it is what it is now..

Maybe it’s just me feeling this way? I hope not. I’ve always wanted to become a commander in WvW because I see myself fit for it, but there is no point really with a zillion (uncapable) commanders roaming just one boarder already.. :/

Commanders make a name for themselves by reputation and past accomplishments. On any given day multiple Blue dots may show up but I will be honest with you there are only a handful on my server that I will seek out and follow and am sure other servers are no different.

OP, been pointed out many times by the wizzes in the tech forum. GW2 basically utilizes the old GW1 engine that is optimised for DirectX 9. Direct X 9 does not utilize the latest multi core processors which is why you see the heavy CPU usage during gameplay. It will take a complete rewrite of game code to take advantage of Direct X 11 which properly utilizes 4+ cores but it’s just not gonna happen months after release.

I think that the game is disheartening

I find it really amusing that during primetime, when the numbers are even in most Borderlands … Blackgate is usually in last place. Then, when America is sleeping and Blackgate doesn’t actually have to face any players, they gain all of their points. Doesn’t that make everyone on the Blackgate server feel dirty? That all of your points are gained by non-competition? If you ever move up to Tier 1 … it’s going to be a very sobering experience for you.

MMO gamers in general want instant gratification and EZ mode wins. Most don’t want a challenge. Just compare it to WOW when Blizzard allowed faction and server transfers as it quickly became a cash cow for Blizzard as lots of players when this service first opened up immediately went to the EZ mode faction or server.

Anet makes it easier for those looking to be carried as they allow free weekly transfers.

Game is very cpu intensive and is the bottleneck. The wizards posting in the tech forums state this game should have written with dirextx 11 in mind as it properly utilizes present day systems with 4 cores which would have helped a lot. However, this engine is just a rehash of the Guild wars 1 engine which is dirextx 9 based which does not utilize multi core cpus to its advantage.

It would take a complete rewrite from the ground up for this to happen, something of which is not gonna happen with a Free 2 play game that has already been released.

A Treaty won’t save SoR/TC your servers honestly don’t have the round the clock coverage that blackgate does. Recruit more Oceanic WvW’rs. Coming from a blackgate original I was there when the server went to t1 and it wasn’t pretty, the zergs were bigger the exploits were way more often. I’m honestly quite happy staying in the t2 bracket. So Sor/TC you want to make a treaty maybe you should make a treaty to throw in the towel and ensure blackgate moves up a tier cause we got no problem leading t2 bracket week after week, and this isn’t because we are more skilled it is just a numbers game in our favor.

Don’t drown us in your bravado, you’ll be losing points next week. We don’t even have to do anything for that to happen, as you’ve done it to yourselves.

Edit: In fact if you had been patient you’d be moving up to Tier 1 after next week with the way SBI has been falling after getting hit by a transfer exodus, but instead you’re with us for another two weeks at least. Maybe more if SBI gets some reinforcements.

When we make it to tier 1, I think people may be surprised how well we do. .

LOL. Aside from Blackgate, I doubt any of the other servers care what you do in Tier 1.

I think you overestimate the populations of the Tier 1 servers, they have all fallen dramatically. There’s a reason the Tier 2 thread has 450+ replies every week and the Tier 1 thread only has 125.

Indeed. That said, every server is gonna run into spikes, particularly in a Free 2 play game.

Take for instance a guild of 100 take a break from their server and comeback 3 months later, what exactly have they lost? Absolutely nothing.

SoR has been contacted twice about a possible “teaming” with TC to take out BG.
Both times the SOR WvW community has shot it down. We do not want to win if we can only win by an “alliance” we want to stand and fight, win or lose. (Seeing it brought up in this thread seems even more want a “alliance” or sorts to happen, but I highly doubt it ever will.)

Rallian’s stand on their own 2 feet. We don’t bow to anyone and we aren’t above anyone. We don’t give up and wont stop fighting.

Do not speak for the entirety of SoR. I rather not be generalized as a tactically imcompetent player.

Currently, BG has far more WvW players than either SoR or TC. It is ridiculous that both servers attack each others towers/keeps on battlegrounds that we are both outmanned on. All it does is keep our main forces busy while the BG horde wipes one team and then wipes the other at which point they own everything and half of our remaining players log off. If instead both our teams didn’t attack each other at those times, BG would have to split its forces evenly which would lead to a more balanced fight. That in turn means that more people would keep fighting as a total wipe is less likely. If people keep fighting then it means we’re having fun.

hah, it is what it is. Yesterday during 2pm server which you would think is primetime for SOR, i zoned into Eternal and sure enough both npc’s are up for low man debuff event introduced in the last patch. I then zone into BG BL and again the npc is up for low man debuff event.

At present we have just enough to field a force for one zone and it’s not like we have that many to begin with as there is zero queue time.

Do you WvW? If not, what's stopping you?

scootshoot.6583

My 10 fps in mass battles is what’s stopping me. Have decided to run scout and supply missions instead which becomes very boring thus my time in WvW has drastically declined.

This single game is not worth a 300+ dollar investment in a new motherboard and I5-I7 cpu although reading the tech forums those with such systems aren’t getting that much better performance anyways (bang for buck theory) as all my other games run flawlessly with my X4 955 cpu.

Why does there have to be culling at all?

in WvW

Posted by: scootshoot.6583

Why not just send all information about all players that are in range? This is is almost 2013. Other games did this ten years ago.

In the Tech section a few of the tech whizzes mentioned GW2 was setup to be DirectX9 which does utilize multi core processors very well. DirectX11 would do this game good but it would take a complete rewrite in code something of which is not gonna happen in this game.

This game has great graphics, great game play, and the best sounds I have had in a game in a long time. The classes are fun to play. What the game lacks…purpose. This game is one big grind. The quest or hearts are just cut and pasted, they are the same from one to 80. The personal storyline starts off slightly different then quickly becomes the same story for all chars. This game will be short lived IMHO amongst the hardcore gamers. I don’t like to have to grind for gold. I rather grind for my level. Honestly some of the graphics for gear are awful. Then there is community, guilds don’t even have a guild hall, let alone a reason to really banned together. Peeps on the battle field have very little to group unless your friends. Then there is The Hall of Monuments or as it should be refereed to is the Hall of Wasted time in GW1. 3 out of 5 stars from me. Already looking to see what is coming out in the near future in the MMO world.

Elder Scrolls Online, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLp0ykvotEI&list=FLNJi0oNtThGb2cGacQxKdyA&index=10, that video cleared most of my doubts about the game. I feel as if ArenaNet wanted to be so unique that they actually created a living breathing cliche as well as a thriving contradiction.

I like the one epic server concept stead of picking shards. There are a ton of Elder scrolls fanbase out there. Their last series, Skyrim pulled in record sales for Bethesda. I wager ESO will be hot at launch … will it have the lasting appeal? We’ll see.

Also, what fanboys of WOW and Guildwars 2 don’t realize is as they always get defensive when a new MMO is due for launch is like any consumer product, the more competition the better it is for all.

To the peeps wanting to drop a tier and or not happy with 2nd place @ SOR. The so called server bonuses aka gatherer, medic, etc. is “meh” at best. The real rewards are flipping objectives and pvping.

Also, I take it you weren’t around the first few months of release when there was much more randomness in opponents as servers were still in it’s random ranking tier stage when SOR had the full maps to themselves (as their opponents quit early for nearly the full week) we had nothing to do but finish off jump puzzles, gathering resources, etc…was very boring to say the least.

Also word of mouth rules the day. The average consumer buys prebuilt systems at retail chains like Best Buy, etc. Most find out through others playing GW2 and so forth the game has hefty system requirements and will either stay away or realize investing in another CPU, Video card after forking down $$$ for a prebuilt is not worth it to run GW2 properly and the disk will just become a cup coaster.

One of the reasons WOW became so popular was peeps could run the game adequately on average pre built systems out of the box.

As an example, earlier today I ran to our catapult to help defend it cause from my client as I approached it appeared only “2” enemy near it. Soon as I reached the Catapult I did an instant death and was like WTF but as I lay there as a corpse trying to figure out how I went from 100-0 so quickly the server decided to show a mass zerg all around our cats, haha.

I just came here to say something came to our server we are tier 2 and have same problem things is here we have a ver well organized community just for WvW i mean everyday we have more than 10 guilds working together and around 300 constant ppl in our server TS.

Nice. Only minor gripe I see with SOR is our teamspeak server is rarely used, meaning most all the TS users jam pack one BL and congregate there.

As an example, 1:40pm on a Saturday I see 2 folks on Blue teamspeak server, 1 on Red, 1 on Eternal while there are 30plus on Green.

It is what it is….

IoJ vs SoR vs BG

BG should dominate this week. Earlier I logged and SOR had 6+ commanders on IOJ when the map on their side was already 90pct ours. With that many either split up or focus on the top server. I zoned to BG BL soon after and we had small pack of <10 doing their thing.

BG pretty much has free reign as it looks like SOR is focused on 2nd place, haha.

Agreed! DR is a huge city zone and it’s pretty obvious a lot of thought went into the design. Unfortunately it ends there. Hopefully a future expansion, content patch etc. will utilize the area more.

Screw the hair, I just find it awesome that Zoija is voiced by that cute redhead from The Guild.

If I was you just stick it out as there will be upcoming after Thanksgiving “black friday” sales. Perhaps by then ANet will have optimized their engine a bit further as well.

Welcome to SOR players from Taiwan! US based servers always need support during off peak hours so please stick around.

Agree with the comment on CRS, I followed their coat tails this past weekend as well. I zoned in solo only to see a slew of CRS so I stuck to them for protection like flys to poop!

SoR can’t be stopped! WE are like a bulldozer!

haha, if anything SOR is just relentless, just a never say die attitude. There were several past matches where things looked bleak early going.

We “may” have an increase of transfers in the past week but early going (just 2+ weeks ago) we definitely did not have the numbers. What we did have however during those times and still do were great leaders and awesome guilds like EPIC who know their stuff which helped carried us to victory as we moved up the ranks.

I know that I should be in a group, basically kiting enemies at my skill/trait level. But it’s really hard to find the zerg group.

Every server is gonna have their own standout commanders/leaders. Look on the map for the “Blue” dots roaming around. Usually these guys/gals will have a pack following them as they are easy to spot when you solo queue into a WvW.

Make a beeline for the closest Blue dot from your vantage point and follow them around.

In time you will recognize the true standout leaders that play the same time as you and you will eventually pick favorites to ride their coat tails, haha.

Per your first “Q” issue, having a full array of skills and traits at max 80 level is a huge bonus. And at 22 you haven’t even opened up your “Elite” trinket slots yet.

You should be running in a pack at your level, stop solo exploring … lol
