I have a hard time taking Courtyard seriously. Why? The map feels incomplete. Every coquest map has a main objective of holding points, and secondary objectives which dont win the game but can give advantages to a team.
Why are these secondary objectives important? The add a lot of gameplay to each map, and give different builds different roles. Courtyard needs secondary objectives. Whichever team wins the initial team fight then camps spawn. If we had to cover multiple secondary objectives then each team would have to break up into smaller groups, making courtyard closer fto 2v2 and 3v3 gameplay for which it was originally intended.
As to what these objectives should be I dont know! What would you like to see added to flesh out our first TD map?
You’re entitled to your opinion, but I don’t think it’s been a disaster, we just need to tweak the configs… which is something we expected would need to do. This is why the beta ladder will start the 16th, and not today.
Your update made me unable to play the game…. I tried to play…. gave up…. went to sleep…. woke up and tried again…. still nothing… not even a reply to the many people getting this error…. Maybe in the long term this system will make pvp a better place; but the launch has certainly been a disaster.
Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel? Anet already had an amazing pvp system in GW1. The fact that people have asked for the return of random arenas and team arenas multiple times on this thread and since this game has launched should tell you something….
Still no fix? This is really surprising. Usually you guys get right on game breaking fixes which prevent people from playing your game…
I am also having the problem where when I try to join a pvp match (ranked or unranked) nothing happens. the button clicks and the click sound happens then nothing…. until a minute later a failure message pops up for each time I clicked. the code to the message is:
Code 42:0:9001:4409:101
Hope this helps. I am playing through my College campus’ network. Had a problem similar to this in past but it happened when I tried to log onto a character from the character selection screen instead of PVP. Turns out the problem happened because the campus got a new firewall protection piece of equipment which recognized Guild Wars as a Peer to peer sharing service.
PS I found your GIf pretty funny but its not exactly what I would call professional behavior. If you would have just said “We recognize the problem and are currently working on it” I doubt anyone would have a problem with it.
I never thought I’d say that I miss the old system, but wow. This new system was NOT ready for prime time. It is not fun.
Can you elaborate? We have plenty of things we can tweak to improve matchmaking now, so qualitative feedback is useful.
I don’t see how you don’t understand this.
If you have a team of 5 people, chances are they are organized. They cover each others builds and may be on TS together. Now this very organized build is facing 2 groups of 2 man teams and a solo player. Sure even if the 2 man groups are perfectly synchronized together, they don’t know whats going on with the other 3 people on their teams. The 5 man team has a huge advantage….
Not super experienced in TPVP so please correct me if this is wrong but this is how I see the problem at least….
Thing is, you have NO EXCUSE for taking longer than a day to implement these changes. Nothing was broken. You “fixed” something that didn’t need fixing and you fixed it to rip people off. It isn’t good enough for you to spend the next however many weeks fixing the idiotic kitten you broke in the first place.
.
My problem is not the communication. My issue is that this NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH! We had a system that worked well and you literally broke it. You made it worse. And don’t lie to us that you did not do it intentionally. Hitting us with this during one of the busiest times of the year, without even a word of warning that there would be a change, and then releasing new items which abuse the broken system you recently implemented is BAD BUSINESS.
This is not something I would have expected from Anet based off of my experiences in GW1.
Gaile I remember celebrating Halloween with you in Lion’s Arch in GW1 and I remember being sad saying bye to you when you left that game. I trust you. I am sure you are relaying our discontent to your higher ups. What your company just did is a PR nightmare and there is no way that the team designing this “improved system” did not realize this in the weeks or months spent designing it.
Great ideas everyone; how about we combine a few of the suggestions.
So we are required to get a WvW weekly to be eligible for rewards. The requirements for the weekly can ONLY be obtained from EBG or the BLs. The requirements to complete the weekly should take about 1 hour of gameplay.
At the end of the week if you completed your weekly you get 10 tickets, which have been added to your wallet.
Simple and sweet, it forces people out of the EOTM zerg, encourages meaningful contribution for your 1 hour of game time, and discourages bandwagoning.
I cant wait till you face a sword dagger ranger who knows what hes doing… then you’l really quit!
How about just convert badges into tickets? I have about 3000 badges with nothing worth buying with them.
Really good idea! Only problem I see is that Tickets, like laurels, are currently set up to be a time gated currency (IE you can’t earn 5 ascended trinkets in one night of really successful game play) where badges can be earned constantly.
However that is another great possibility that these tickets open up
Well, for me, these and those from last season are just collecting dust and taking up inventory space. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way for more of them.
I know I am also left stuck with an awkward 50 tickets sitting in my bank right now and they will be practically useless for half a year. This is exactly why I think we need to implement tickets as a reward for weekly play. instead of having those tickets sit in your bank and be useless, you can slowly add to them each week until they become something very useful; like an ascended trinket!
I agree that the requirement to qualify for these weekly tickets need to be far higher then this tourny’s. Something that should be accomplished within 1-3 hours of play and not 1-3 minutes….
Doesn’t this game have enough different currency yet?
I agree there are a huge number of currency types. But this currency already exists and right now its kind of in a weird spot… we can only get more of it during a tourny which is something like 2-3 times a year TOPS. That is why I would like to add a way to slowly get them throughout the year. Also I believe that all the rewards from tickets are account bound so it won’t make a huge impact on the economy.
This would have to be implemented along with a WvW system overhaul as I agree it would encourage bandwagoning… Thats why I wanted the rewards to be pretty small in the first place… at 15 tickets a win it will take 14 weeks of winning in 1st place in order to afford an ascended trinket.
Possible fixes to bandwagoning have be discussed extensively in other threads and I like a lot of the ideas proposed (especially the alliance vs. alliance ideas) However this problem is solved I think tickets as a reward system would fit nicely and easily into the solution.
Because Rangers don’t have a “mine skill?”
Do you play a Charr?
Sure do! never realized it was a racial skill… Well I guess its a good example of how traps SHOULD function.
I am a huge fan of the tournament tickets we get each week. I would like to see them become a more common part of WvW.
Why not keep the tickets around year long? It really gives each server a better reason to give it their all each week instead of just waiting for a Tourny to come along. The number of tickets given each week would have to be drastically reduced however. I’m thinking something like:
1st place – 15 tickets
2nd place – 10 tickets
3rd place – 5 tickets
In order to become eligible to receive the reward you would have to fulfill a WvW weekly achievement. Basically it is the same thing as the most recent tourny achievement but slightly harder because I think most people agreed that the achievements during this tournament were way to easy to obtain.
On a side note as a veteran of all WvW tournys run so far, this one has been my favorite by far. Once we figure out the population imbalance issue I think WvW would be in a good place, and be ready for future expansions like new maps etc.
I built a roaming Trapper wvw armor set (using runes of the trapper) and I have been having a lot of fun. The stealth gain combos well with the GM trait where you gain opening strike whenever you stealth. However this build leaves you as practically a glass build and the PewPew LB zerker roams way better then any trapper could ever hope to.
I really believe that the main thing holding traps back is placement in skirmishing line, and the lack of an elite trap skill. GW1 had an elite trap skill (spike trap?) which knocked down whoever triggered along with direct damage; this would be PERFECT for trap rangers. It forces the opponent to sit in the traps as they trigger and be stacked with the condis.
Frost trap needs SOME sort of damage; direct damage if traps stay in the skirmishing line or torment if it gets moved. Chilled is a very powerful condi but Frost trap is just lack luster, always the last one I bring. Ranger has plenty of access to cripple and chill, I would rather bring another trap, LR, or a signet in that stone.
Why is the mine skill rangers have not labeled as a trap? We can throw it untraited, it sits on the ground like a trap, and explodes for direct damage AND condi damage when an enemy walks over it. i just don’t understand why it is not counted as a trap
This has been discussed at length and it is common sense tbh
Sword-Best single target melee damage
Axe- Best multi-target ranged damage
The feature patch did not change anything; just made axe better at it’s intended function.
To avoid the inevitable Longbow vs. Shortbow thread I’ll just summarize all of the weapons for you.
Shortbow-Power condi hybrid
Longbow-Zerker power damage pew pew blastah
Torch- condi+fire field
Dagger- Condi+evade
Axe off hand- power+reflect
Warhorn-power+blast

I tried to log in this morning, I can get into the character selection screen fine but when I try to log on a character I get the error message
“The game client has lost connection to the server. Please wait a few minutes before restarting the client and trying again.”
I have been waiting and trying again for over an hour and I get this error every time. Are the servers currently down? I restarted my computer and restarted my internet.
I understand that they really can’t say much; but at the very least some sort of post where a dev or mod admits “yes the server matchups are extremely imbalanced and in no way conducive to game growth.”
They could use this as the trait to fix Ranger WvW
Ranger and Pet recieve 20% damage reduction vs AOE while wielding a melee weapon
Boom…. useful
Skills and weapons look good, have you tried axe/GS in wvw? Axe’s medium range works in skirmish and clearing away guards.
Maybe drop Evasive Purity for 2 handed training?
How about this.
Remove hot join in general.
there will b more noobs in soloq so u wont have to worry about getting steamrolled,
and more players so almost instant ques.
then add spectate to top rated play, where it actually matters.
No… Then that opens the door to a whole new problem. People join SoloQ and see their team is full of “noobs” and say well I have no chance here and I don’t want to waste 8 minutes carrying a team… and they leave. Good thing the que line is down now; so that player can just keep joining soloQ until he gets in a team full of players he wants.
Hot join is working as intended, the problem is team stacking which is enabled by a broken spectate mode.
LB + wolf. ranger is easy on skyhammer.
the problem with skyhammer is that it requires specific builds, and while the build maker is an improvement, we can’t quickly save/load specs, which would make it easy to play the desired build for the map.
Agreed and on the rare occasions that I bring a LB I have a lot of fun joining in on the trollhammer map. I would love to get quick build swap templates like in GW1 but I don’t want to see this game go in a direction of having to swap to an optimal build for each map.
Stop playing hot join problem solved.
That’s exactly the mentality that kill games. Hot join is designed for the casual pvp experience and it is also designed for beginners to learn what pvp is all about. If new players are turned off to pvp then less new players will trickle upwards to the more competitive styles of game. As existing high level players burn out and drop the game there will be fewer and fewer people replacing them.
What helped GW1 pvp last was the existence of Random arenas, and later Alliance battles which acted as a training grounds for the other areas of competitive game play (TA, HA, GVGs)
Even if you don’t play hot join, improving the experience of hot join can still positively effect you.
I like the skyhammer map…. so long as I am playing a class that has access to the instant kill combos. Skyhammer favors certain classes over others and thats not fair imo. Ranger is a nightmare to play in skyhammer. If you use ranger sword then you have to be EXTREMELY careful because your autoattack will almost always send you off the cliff. All of the stairs and platforms confuse pets/minions and most of the time they are on the other side of the map when you need them.
I like the fall to your death mechanic. It gives pushes/pulls interesting utility;but they should have spread it out among multiple maps instead of placing it all in the same place.
Who the kitten cares about hotjoin. You all sound like those parents that make decision complaints to the referee of a 5yo’s football game
I care about hotjoin. Im not a gret pvper and I play hotjoin for fun and to get better at playing. I have no interest in competitive play because peoplebecome asswholes and I dont want to drag a team down. I dont care if I am on the winning side I play for fun. I do however want to have a mostly fair team.
If you like competitive pvp then you should also care about hotjoin… its new players first experience and if every game is a steamroll not many are going to stay in the heart of the mists
I played hotjoin for about 3 hours the other day. A handful of those games were close matches and the rest landslides victories or losses. I ALWAYS hit join random and I still had a blast… yet it was the few close matches that were really enjoyable and kept me coming back. The majority of the games were 5v4 4v3 with A LOT of team swap shenanigans. I know that hotjoin is not meant to be competitive but not all players want to or are ready for soloq. People are also less fun to play with in soloq…
I like a lot of the ideas presented here and I knowppl working at anet are more qualified to solve this than I. It may seem trivial to competitive players but hotjoin is the only pvp a lot of players ever experience. Dont we deserve a chance at equal teams too?
I know anet is focused on pushing gw2 into the Esports realm but its disheartening to see team stacking and game leaving problems go on for so long. GW1 had a dishonor mechanic… why the step backwards?
I’ve played since release and this is seriously the first time i’ve heard a complaint about deathshroud.
Yes it does screw with some team mechanics like stomping, healing, etc.
You know how this can be easily solved though?
Press F1…
“The gap between sword and shortbow is much higher than you claim. 30% or so”
You forget the part where you have to be near your target to actually hit it with the sword.
Target moves away, no dmg. Simple.
By that logic all ranged weapons are always superior to Close combat weapons. Ranger sword is actually the king of staying on moving targets, just spaming auto attack should keep you on top of most targets.
Lets keep this thread going!
So the new style of LS, lots of instances with living world included, works and a lot of people like it. How can this style of LS be improved? Especially in the area of applying lasting content to the game.
For me, make the instances more group oriented! My favorite living story content was the dungeon from Flame and Frost (raiding the weapons factory); it was an enjoyable difficulty and length. If that particular dungeon instance was still available, I would still be playing it.
People have been begging for a “last stand survival” type game mode. Just slip it into an instance mission!
@Diesel: People have been saying that since release.
I don’t know why anyone would want to judge the entire season after only two patches, but…if you see doom and gloom, I can only hope you will be pleasantly surprised. =)
Also, I’m not sure exactly how your response addresses the statement that, due to popular request, the content for Season Two is permanent. /shrug
I agree 100%. The broader truth is that nothing that they do will ever make everyone happy.
People were screaming for permanent content. Now that it is here, it isn’t good enough and they want more. Nothing will ever satisfy some people.
And you are also right, judging after 2 updates? Wow. That is just insane.
If we get an expansion sized update over the living story 2’s life time, there will still be complaining. Nothing is ever good enough for some people.
I think you missed Diesl’s comment about constructive feedback. The LS makes me happy, it was enjoyable to spend 2 hours engaged in the well done story.
Yes this LS season is permanent; but without achievements there is really no re-playable content. Dry Top will empty out, and the instances are pretty much single player. Sure you can do it with a group but there is no reason. The instances are not hard enough to require group play; although I’m sure with time they will get harder.
What has been successful permanent additions? EotM and fractals. Both are heavily used additions which have seriously improved the game and added a lot of re-playablity. Sure maybe in a year or two I will come back and play through LS 2 instances again; but it will never hold players attention more then additions like GvG or new pvp modes. We play MMOs because we want to play a game with other people. If I want to do a single player instance, I’ll just switch over to Dark Souls.
Shortbow is a hybrid weapon and so works well with many weapon set ups. Try:
Sword Torch – Hybrid
Sword Dagger – hybrid (mostly power)
Axe Torch or dagger – hybrid (mostly condi)
use carrion for these setups
Weapons I would avoid with shortbow
Longbow – don’t bring condi
Greatsword – don’t bring condi
use zerker for these set ups
Warhorn – avoid this weapon unless your running in zergs. I would classify it as a power weapon though
Hope this helped
Also Agreed. Played GW1 for years; put easily over 2600 hours into it. The only content that keeps me coming back to GW2 is WvW.
Great job on the new living story style; although the open world content did not really draw me in to grind for the new rewards the instances are fun and I might get around to replaying them.
Dungeons have to be the least fun I’ve had in a video game in a long time. Run past a ton of meatbag mobs hide in a corner to break aggro leash then fight a final boss. This set up DOES NOT fit in with the design philosophy of the game. I thought you guys wanted build diversity?
I’m still waiting for some organized pvp, GVG or heroes ascent. Right now we are 2 years in and still only have Random arenas (hotjoin) and Team Arenas. Anet, if you are going to push this game as a legit Esport then WE NEED MORE THEN 1 GAME MODE. introducing new game modes will increase build diversity.
Amazingly fighting over the same WvW maps is still enjoyable but I don’t how much longer that will last.
Sorry if this comes across as whining or wishlisting but I honestly do love GW2, I want to see it as top MMO.

Pets do not have to have dodge, they should just get a 1 second blur effect when we dodge or use evasion abilities.
Yes! this is exactly what I have been thinking. Every time the player dodges the pet also dodges in the direction of the player. All you need is a blur visual and make the pet move really fast for 1 second. You don’t need to change F1-4 buttons, you don’t need to add or take away from the pet’s skill bars, and you don’t need to drastically alter Pet’s role.
I would also say that this is balanced as the whole ranger (character+pet) is being protected by the dodge mechanic.
A lot of players are comparing pets to Nec Minions and Mes Clones. This is a poor comparison because all 3 require different levels of investment and fill different roles for their respective classes. Necs are not required to bring minions, and Clones are meant to be sacrificial and are easily replaceable.
I love when my ranger gets focused in a zerg fight… hes tankier then the guradian commander I’m following. While the other team tries to burst me down the whole hammer train is sitting in my water field keeping me alive… 3.2k armor (no stacks) and over 1k healing power. I would never bring anything less to WvW as a ranger unless I am specifically roaming for 1 v1
Anet PLEASE bring back the Bunny Thumper from GW1. Hammer ranger Rampage as One was fun and would totally fit in. Ranger Hammer would give Rangers a more offensive 2 handed weapon (since GS is a defensive weapon.) Hammer would focus on AoE and CC giving rangers a way to contribute in Zerg V Zerg fights.
Staff would also be a great addition. Make Staff Ranger a solid Beast master option with team support and pet buffs (retaliation for pets please)
Adding 2 weapons for each class seems like a very reasonable content update to me.
I totally agree. I spent hours getting my Sclereite Karka Shell and before everytime I saw someone who also had it I knew, this guy has been around at least as long as me. He/She put it as much effort as I did… I understand people are sad that they missed some cool skins in the past. But thats the point… YOU MISSED IT! While you were off playing other games we were sticking with GW2 through some awesome and some terrible living story updates.
Why should I bother going for LS2 unique skins when I can just catch them all at the end of the year wrap up?
Hey guys I have started pvping a lot more since the April patch and I’ve worked out a basic hybrid power/condi build.
I get on top of my target pop QZ+wep swap to sword (for chill)+Bonfire/entangle
It works but feels like a 1 trick pony. If the condi spike does not work I’m pretty vulnerable as I used my condi removal and don’t have much dmg left to spend.
So how can I improve this build? I’ve seen people incorperate fire spirit but I’m not really fond of losing a survival skill for it. I think my gear needs the most work but any help at all will be really appreciated!
Sword dagger is definitely viable. Poison Master/Survival of the Fittest is probably the direction you want to go.
I don’t pvp a lot but I use Sword/torch and shortbow
Think Condi Dmg+Dagger poison+Torch Burn
Long bow is only for pure power builds as far as I know so LB/GS or LB/Sword-Axe
If you want to be more tanky drop poison master and bring Bark skin or Emphatic Bond.
Rangers tend to be pretty tank just because they are practically required to go down defensive trait paths to get access to decent condi removal.
Thanks! I was worried because without Natures voice our shouts dont technincally affect other players.
What sigils would you recommend for a Natures voice ranger? I use axe/torch and Sword/warhorn Settlers armor so I focus on Condition damage. I was thinking water for the healing on the axe but I want to have some bite on top of my heals as well.
thoughts?
Quick question that I could not find in the forum search.
I want to put Runes of the Trooper on my ranger’s healing/Natures Voice build. Will the Runes remove a condition form allies nearby me as well as my pet? or will it just remove a cond from my pet (and maybe me?)
Thanks!
Well there is my answer huh? they bought it a few days ago and 1 of them is already level 51
Thanks guys!
While we are at it can we get a more useful boon then swiftness? A lot of classes can access perm stealth by just equipping the right weapon.
Instead of Swiftness and Regen, how about Regen and condi cleanse BOOM ranger condi problem addressed. Or maybe Regen and might? Regen and aegis? Anything really
A grand master trait that makes our crappy shouts almost viable? not really cutting it. But as rangers we are used to that
I’ve been able to drag two of my friends into wanting to buy GW2 but for the $30 promotional price that was advertised a few months back. When will we see this promotion come back again?
One is a very casual gamer so the lack of paying monthly is really attracting him. The other is a hardcore WoW player who does not want to pay more then $15 a month to get his MMO fix.
Just curious if anyone has heard any rumors?
It would be a pretty fun idea, but how would they implement supply into pve? Would they have to add a supply camp in each map?
Perhaps instead of dropping it from your inventory it could be a pve only elite skill. However it seems like they are trying to get away from pvX only skills in GW2 so I doubt we would see this.
By reduced cool downs do you mean traits that reduce the cooldowns on your weapons and utility skills? I find that on most classes those are actually the best traits to take.
Numbers vary with each class, situation, and play style. My tanky warrior has about 2k armor and she can walk through most WvW zergs.
You can’t go wrong with Power, Toughness, Vitality stats especially if you are soloing a lot. Just change Power to Condition Damage if your running a condition build.
Look for builds in the profession forums or post the build you want to run and ask for help with gear. Finding a solid and friendly guild will also clear up a lot of problems like this. Don’t be afraid to talk to people! Over half of the MMO nerds i have met in my life are really friendly!
Above all experiment and experience different parts of game play!
Could you go into little more detail on this? I loved my MM on GW1 and I started leveling an Nec alt. Which minions do you use in WvW? I assume everything but the flesh wurm? Info on build/gear/runes would be awesome!
^^ Okay fair enough that is a total waste…. But how comes I could save my pet’s name in GW1 then? Is it because the game just recognizes my GW2 pet as a normal mob while GW1 pets were programmed as seperate entities compared to mob AI? If so why didn’t they just do the exact same thing for GW2 pets? GW1 pets worked pretty well.
If you are going for a perma regen/sig of wild build then healing power is the way to go. Also if you go with healing power choose toughness as a 2nd trait. high toughness makes every point of hp you regen worth that much more.
there are some posts that u can dig up that describe how to effectively do exactly what you are asking for; I forget the post name but do a little digging and you’l find it
Developer: and as a GRANDMASTER trait we are going to make the longbow playable!! that should shut them up about that pet thing eh?
On more serious note yea the longbow is already a decent weapon but I don’t see this changing anything. At least the other classes didn’t get anything cool or ridiculously strong or unneeded right?
“Warrior: dual wield warriors attack 10% faster…. "
At least it wasn’t something for GS eh?
