Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
the quote isn’t working right on that, idk why ^
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
You also have to realize that stealth is a thief’s only form of defense (unless you’re an acro thief). All classes have their own defense system: warriors are innately tanky and have a high health pool, Guardians regen a lot of health and are tanky, Eles regen massive amounts of health. Stealth is the only was a thief CAN survive. Also, thieves do still take full damage while in stealth, so they’re don’t go into god mode like you see to believe. Stealth kittenes most people off because it’s different, and takes an entirely different strategy to play against. It requires you to THINK, okay he went into stealth, what is he going to do now. After a few stealths you should be able to tell how the thief plays, and from this, how to counter him. And finally, if someone kills you as thief, remember that it is entirely possible that they are simply good (and yes, possibly better than you).
On another note, If you nerf stealth, you need to give thief another reliable means of survival (not all of us want to go acro thieves; I personally find it quite boring).
But ya, you shouldn’t be able to stealth off of walls etc.Ya totally, thiefs are also the only class that can’t dodge.
You’re kidding right? Yes you can dodge skills, but no matter what things are going to hit you. Take axe warriors for instance- their AAs hit me for 1-2k on average and I can;t dodge all of them. Also, what do your dodges do against condis? I didn’t consider dodges in my argument because all classes have them, so discussing it is pointless.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
you say thief’s only form of defense is stealth, and other classes have blocks, invulnerabilities, etc. etc.
the difference is that we don’t (and can’t) have a permanent uptime of those. good thieves, when they stealth, will never be hit because they take full use of their dodges, teleports, and w/e else they have and its overpowered… not only do they have very high mobility, when they perma stealth (heck, even going into shadow’s refuge for 10-15 seconds and you can never find them if they run away)
no other class can do this, even warrior’s can be chased down if they are full mobility (it takes some effort but it can be done)

Edit: Changed the change for Hunter’s Shot and Point Blank Shot under Longbow and Counterattack under Greatsword

I haven’t had much time to play lately, and I have my own guilds to rep, but if you ever need help theorycrafting, hit me up.
- Commanded (no tag) for a zergbusting guild and created most of the builds used
– Know my way around tPvP :]
– All I do (literally) is duel in-game
– I am very experienced with all types of builds and know how to play them well, this does not only apply to ranger. (The only classes I don’t play as much are engi, necro, and guard, though I’ve fought and still played them long enough to know how they all work.)
– I’ve played ranger since launch
– And I very strongly dislike PvE. haha
The only thing is I won’t rep much. I don’t really PvE so I won’t have a reason to guest, and I have my own guilds to take care of. Also, it might be awhile before I can accept the invite depending on how long until I return. But again, if you ever need any help training the new guys or anything, let me know and I’ll free up some time.

my pet is a love-hate relationship, sometimes im glad to have it there as an extra source of damage (like when im 1vX-ing (1-4)), but sometimes (like zerg vs. zerg) I wish it wasn’t there at all
the bad thing about pets is that they’re single target, I just wish we’d scale up in places like WvW to make up for the lost stats (and damage too)
also, pets are almost fully AI except for their f2 ability
they didn’t even make it so that we can literally control every action they carry out, this makes it so everyone is pretty much even all across the game and doesn’t allow the better players to shine through because of their prowess with controlling a second character (the pet)
instead of giving us control over our pets’ 4 attacks, give them 5 attacks, 3 utilities, and have an option to keep it as an AI. this makes it so we can choose between having a purely computer controlled pet vs. one that we control ourselves (with more keybinds of course) haha
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
lynx and snow leopard (felines) have the best dps out of all pets
birds are bursty but the cats are better overall
also, snow leopard does some pretty nice dmg once that chill gets off, and I think the f2 does significantly more damage than the lynx’s
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
OMFG I hate this. I typed a whole long post explaining a ton of tactics to use against thieves and mesmers and when I clicked post, it said this page is unavailable >.> when I hit go back, I lost it all.

Sigmoid, respect brahhh.
Never seen anyone else who (seems to) play like me on ranger. =]
The only difference I have with u is that I use Longbow as a primary weapon. I always stay in Longbow as I can kite extremely well with Point Blank Shot, Hunter’s Shot, and Barrage. My main damage comes from Rapid Fire with Fire and Air sigils when my target is anything less than max range.
When they close the distance to melee range, that’s when I stealth (knockback first if its not on cooldown), swap weapons, Hornet Sting (Monarch’s Leap in the other direction if I need to), and kite around with dodges and Serpent’s Strike until weapon swap comes off cooldown. When it does, then its back to Rapid Fire, Point Blank Shot, Hunter’s Shot, Barrage, then Rapid Fire again.

I edited ur build. Also, it works with cavalier amulet too.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAR8YjEq0ya/Kesw1aALhqdDEAFwvT1bJ8AZcVKyqA-TZBEwASuCAMeAAp2fAwBBIbZAA
u can swap signet of renewal out for signet of the hunt if u want more mobility
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
Sigmoid has a solid build. It’s actually very similar to one I use myself.
The one I use:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAT8XjEq0ya/KGsw1agDhq9K8rjAzAYBcOEtwFXlWF-T1yDABbqWRR7PAlypCuIAAYCqJlMH8EAaRVFP0NEwBCwBlgkCQglRA-w
in fact, I think the stats he chose are slightly better than mine… nice job mate, first time ive seen someone else come up with a build like mine that I actually liked :P
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
fire/bloodlust on longbow, join a zerg, barrage on enemy zerg, walk away with 25 stacks of bloodlust
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
swiftness duration runes or power/prec runes
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
there isn’t one. at least not a viable one. if u build only for perma chill, u have no dmg, its a troll spec essentially.
though condi-chill works, ur shorting ur dmg if u build for longer chills
same thing with hybrid/power, but chill works better for those imo
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
don’t change it?
…
if u think its not fair then don’t reflect, but seriously, when people do this it gets on my nerves… it makes peoples day easier and u go around “nerf this plz”… lol
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
I wish they made lightning reflexes 20 or 25 second cooldown… it’d help a lot lol reduced vigor duration ofc.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
400 each shot of rapid fire.
45% crit chance with fury (let’s just say 50% to make it easier)
211% crit dmg
10 shots
and +15% dmg from steady focus and runes of rage
400 * 2.26 = 904
904 * 5 = 4520
400 * 5 = 2000
4520 + 2000 = 6520 damage
…
that should be right, but again, overall damage depends on how lucky u are with crits
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
actually, yeah, ignore my math post… lmao, I rushed to get that done before I left to go eat…
I messed that up lol, hold on
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
oh…kay? lol. then don’t get the frost aura…
I don’t go out of my way to get it, but if my target is walking in the field and I happen to use swoop, im not complaining lol… its just extra chills to help u out… lol.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
mine? or…
lol15charsoannoyingicanteven.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
yes… and no.
u can have 225% critical chance, and it can go even higher with damage modifiers (im talking about around 250% and above, give or take) but if u have 10% critical chance, ur rlly not doing too much dmg…
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
WOW.
ur saying I don’t understand the double jump of s2… omfg. I can’t even.
LOL!
sorry, that was funny, u don’t know this (and I know that) but all I play is power ranger (and spirit in tournies… and bleed burst when im bored… but that’s beside the point, I main power… lol).
ofc I understand how to use s2, its how I create distance between myself and a target… how else are u supposed to 1vX?
u expect a power ranger to just facetank 4 ppl? lmao…
btw…
I know but once you pull it off every single time, even under pressure you will see what i mean.
what do u mean? u crack under pressure? looooool.
I don’t understand, using s2 twice to break out of pressure/escape/run away is very easy to do… idk, maybe its because im used to it, but I never really had trouble with it in the first place…
and seriously, I bet 100g u can’t outrun a mobility warrior (out of combat of course)
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
@Gawker
I was talking about this one.
heres what i went with. the fury time was not realistic because you would have to spam the utilities to much so yeaaa
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJARTjEq0xaJLusQ1ag9gadAUAndrhw9WcEtNA-TFCBABfq+jR7PsnuAAeCAYcBAyS5XIHCgzUCSKAmUGB-w
25% crit chance naturally
45% crit chance with fury.
so rapid fire hits for 4k give or take (from the vulnerability, opening shot, the actual channel itself, etc. etc.)
4000 * .45 = 1800
1800 * (2.11 + .15) = 2070 (critical damage + steady focus, +5% dmg while under the effects of fury)
4000 * .55 = 2200
2200 * 1.15 = 2530 (steady focus, +5% dmg while under the effects of fury)
2070 + 2530 = 4600…
sorry, in my previous post I was wrong.
you would actually hit for 4.6k (give or take, depending on how lucky u are with ur crits) but this is pretty much what you’ll hit for.
if he had 100% crit chance and rapid fire hit for 4k, then yes, overall, he’d do 8k damage
but with 25% crit chance (its rlly 45% cuz he pretty much has permanent fury), ur only doing a fraction of what u think you’d do
__________________________________________________________________
Edit: Ignore the math, its wrong… lol. I rushed to get it done =P
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
It isn’t the exact build I use (I would prefer not to give it away, same with my celestial one), but this is a viable power build ive used before, its pretty effective in wvw as u can drop the trap, when they walk in, rapid fire for chill projectile finisher and as they near the edge, point blank shot them right back in, swoop for the aura, maul, hilt bash their heal, and do w/e else u want for the rest of the fight lol
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
according to the power of math, u will hit about 7.6-8k rapid fires with that build while u have fury up
not bad for a glassy-ish build but with 2.4-5k armor, u won’t do so well if u get ganked or anything by a power build (like a backstab thief or warrior)
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
^ lol that’s what I said.
@Klonko
does ur “personal experience” involve playing as and/or against a mobility built warrior?
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
GS + S/x run-away style is a troll build. You will be smacked upside down if you engage toe-to-toe with any proficient melee class.
LOL. ur right, but that was funny to read
also, mobility warriors can do a hell of a lot of damage, idk what ur talking about.
the build I posted isn’t even full mobility tho, and it will still outrun a ranger built for mobility any day, time, or place.
lol.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
yes I know, I scout with that… im saying, a warrior built for mobility will outrun a ranger built for mobility
they also have access to -98% cripple, chill, and immobilize duration… although some condi built classes can still apply them for a decent duration, it essentially makes them “unstoppable” in the sense that they are extremely hard to lock down
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
check this out tell me what you think, this should solve your problems.
switch Greatsword out for Shortbow and ur good.
GS build for you.
It is a middle ground build, you will have some defense, but not be too tanky. You will hit fairly decently, but not over the top. You can apply pressure, and take some pressure too. You will have plenty of cleanses. Some group support through Axe 5 (reflect arrows AOE= 75% of capture point), Healing Spring and Spotter. You will also have very good mobility (sword 2 is clunky, but very nice for moving about once you get the hang of it)
Wilderness Knowledge instead of Vigorous Renewal, Keen Edge instead of predator’s Instinct, Traveler runes instead of Ice runes, again, switch Greatsword out for Shortbow, use Fire/Air sigils on both weaponsets, and use Lynx and Snow Leopard as your pets
I edited your original build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAsYRjEq0ya/Kesw1agDBp9qPj4Fw7wWZcVKvqA-TZBFwAIOEAOeCAl2foaZAAnAAA
pretty good trait setup, just changed some small things
not bad for a zerk setup but u could also try Cavalier amulet instead if u feel ur too squishy. if you do, swap the Sigil of Air on Sword-Dagger out for a Sigil of Force, and just remember not to autoattack for ur first 3 attacks while in Greatsword, instead open with Swoop, Hilt Bash, then Maul if you just swapped to Greatsword after getting into combat, then, just keep using those 3 as the come off cooldown right after you swap to it again.
u can also swap the Offhand Dagger out for an Offhand Axe, if u do that, use Battle and Intelligence sigils on both weaponsets and remember to open with Axe4 when you swap to that set
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
its not faster, gs/s-wh is lower cooldowns, perma swiftness, and just overall more mobility
though we have a heck of a lot more evades, you can’t just say ranger is faster than warrior
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
^^^^^^ WOW. I love those ideas, ima add it to my “Power to the Rangers!” thread if u don’t mind =D.
Also, I agree with Eurantien. Gs4 throw should be a knockdown. I mean, by a logic standpoint, you are literally, chucking your greatsword at someone… I think it’d do a little more than just cripple them for 5 seconds.
But then you have the next poster quoting my “logic” part of this post and argue every other logical/illogical thing in the game. So please, save yourself the time and don’t.
lol.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
Here’s one of the builds I use:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAT8YjUq0ya/Kesw1agDhq5K8BMDgFw9Q0CV9FXlWF-T1SDABdquSPKnmRlCT2f4gLAgQKZCwkRCPBQJoL6GG4gAAg5MxAwE-w
- 90% less cripple duration
– pretty good condi clear
– 50% critical chance with fury
– 202% critical damage
– 2k base power (2.25k with stacks)
– 2.8k armor
– 19k health
– very high swiftness uptime out of combat, near to permanent swiftness in combat
You can swap the Longbow out for a Greatsword if you want. I prefer Longbow for damage however. Greatsword’s Maul is hard to land and many of the attack skills are very telegraphed. Also, for escaping, the stealth from Longbow works wonders.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
Blind/cripple/chill/immobilize are the counters to any melee class to. and sure as hell condi removal is a counter that too.
I keep saying it and I’ll say it some more. Rangers need a Dogged March trait that functions exactly like a warrior’s. I suggest changing Oakheart Salve and moving it down to the Adept line to give it to us.
Of all classes you’d think us “Rangers” are familiar enough when dealing with the environment like the cold (chill), hurting yourself during a fall (or something like that, lol, (cripple)), and being snared by your own trap (immobilize) to be able to recover from them a little faster.
Also, why isn’t Empathic Bond a kittening Adept trait by now boggles my mind. It’s hell of a lot weaker than a warrior’s Cleansing Ire and it’s even one tier higher.
Idk. If some basic changes were made, our class would be a lot better than it is right now but all we’ve had are nerfs (to things that actually made us somewhat strong to a certain degree… I’m looking at you Shortbow #1 with quickness) and crap traits like Poison Master.
I think the only good thing they’ve actually done with any significant impact is Survival of the Fittest. That is the only thing that has an actual use. Some may argue Read the Wind is a good one as well, but it should have been a “bug” fix. Longbow should inherently have that projectile speed increase. There is a max range for a reason. It’s faulty programming that our enemies are actually below that range but simple sidestepping negates the damage they should have taken.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
(edited by shadowpass.4236)
no. make the pet attack range longer, but have it actual start to attack from less than that, so even if the pet stops to attack, the other player will still get hit even if they’re moving
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
I use lb/frost trap with celestial armor.

Tips to Leveling a Ranger
– Greatsword/Sword-Warhorn as your weapons, use Swoop, Hornet Sting, and Monarch’s Leap as well as Call of the Wild for mobility
– Use Brown/Black Bear only while solo-leveling as they have the ability to tank mobs better than other pets
– The first trait you should unlock is Master’s Bond (II in Beastmastery). When you unlock this skill, each kill you get increases your pet’s survivability and damage. However, try to stay on one pet the entire time as stacks you earn will disappear on pet-swap.
– The second trait you should unlock is Steady Focus (I in Marksmanship), granting a solid 10% increase in damage while endurance is full.
– Pet’s Prowess (I in Skirmishing) next as it increases your pet’s damage by a somewhat-significant amount.
– Spotter (VII in Marksmanship) increases DPS.
– Carnivorous Appetite (VII in Skirmishing) helps keep your pet alive in PVE as they regenerate health.
– Compassion Training (IV in Beastmastery) grants pets a larger heal from Carnivorous Appetite.
– From here, you can go to Trap Potency or Natural Healing (XI in Skirmishing and XII in Beastmastery respectively). Trap Potency for damage, Natural Healing for a very, very good amount of survivability.
– Flame Trap is the first utility you should unlock. Followed by Signet of the Hunt (+25% movement speed while passive. Never use the active while in PvE). Then Signet of Stone. When you reach a high enough level, unlock Signet of the Wild and if you chose Natural Healing, swap Signet of Stone out for Signet of the Wild and you will never die in PvE… like ever.
This is just what I did while leveling, its not an official guide or anything but it worked. I prefer Black Bear and River Drake for the AoE Weakness and damage, but some people use Brown Bear instead. It’s up to you. With full stacks and everything, the bear could AoE Weakness to a large group of enemies (like 5-10) and from here I could either swap to River Drake and let him attack and facetank pretty well, or leave it on Black Bear and watch as he stays at full health the entire time.
As your pet is tanking the mobs for you, you shouldn’t need to dodge so that extra 10% increase in damage should be able to stay on you at all times. When you engage in enemies, drop Flame Trap on them and just use the autoattack for Greatsword and Sword for the most damage.

I think spending 800 gems (or h/e much it costs) is more worth it than deleting a lvl 80 character that undoubtedly took a bit of time and effort to level.
1) You will eventually want a warrior again in the future and think to yourself “D*mn, I wish I hadn’t deleted my warrior.”
2) See above answer.
Warriors are (this is debatable, I know, but I’m simply stating from experience) better overall in all aspects of the game. (More) wanted in groups, dungeons, tPvP, WvW, GvG, etc. etc. Mesmers are wanted too, don’t get me wrong, but warriors are easier to master and, in general, easier to find groups. Organized guilds need at least 5 warriors, and maybe only 1, 2… 3? mesmers at most.
Alright, don’t go there with me. And about what Carpboy said, as his comment was “not helpful” either. You never stated in your original post that you:
1. Had already considered this option.
2. Already filled up 7 character slots.
3. Or made it sound as if you weren’t making another “I’m quitting, please feel sorry for me.” or one of those “I can’t beat this class so I will delete an entire level 80 character and reroll, because I just can’t beat it.” types of threads.
Is that helpful enough? I even bothered to use punctuation in this post. Not something I normally do. (lol, haven’t made a post being this serious in a long, time.)
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
looking for attention. why make an entire thread about “deleting a level 80 character because its too easy, in order to make room for a mesmer”…
why would u deleted a lvl 80 character anyways… if you already have ur 5 slots filled, then buy another slot… you put the time in to get ur warrior to 80 and are willing to throw it all out to make a mesmer… LOL
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
condition won’t work, s/d is one of the only specs on thief that can cleanse a massive amount of conditions…
as for damage, boon strip lowers theirs, not having boons on yourself also helps keep their damage and survivability down, though when u can, apply weakness, even though it will get stripped in a few seconds, it helps stop their dodging ability
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
what? oh, you must’ve been away for awhile… LOL.
again, I feel the skepticism emanating from your post, xD
anet changed it, u can use 2 on-swap sigil/on-crit sigils, etc. etc. as long as they aren’t the same (like superior rune of air and major rune of air on one weapon won’t work, but a superior rune of fire and superior rune of air will)
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
the selfie is strong in the second picture ^
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
haha, that was a change i had actually thought about a while ago, except for point blank shot…. it would still knock back but immobilize after for a second… or 3 after the target(s) get back up
btw, im looking for more feedback haha, if you guys could tell me if you like/dislike the changes im proposing and any changes that should be made/added, that’d be great
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]

1 year birthday gift… u get it after one of ur character’s reaches 365 days in age.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
rangers are pretty anti-stealth/thieves… rapid fire when they get to around 50-25% health, they drop shadow’s refuge, if ur good, u can longbow 4 and knock them out of stealth depending on where rapid fire ended, or use axe 4’s pull (which imo, is a lot easier to hit) to pull them out… for a second or so, they are confused as to what happened, then proceed to dodge around a bit while u finish up the job
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
i had no ideas rangers could rez the dead… lol the skepticism is strong in this one ^
here, this is the same build every other cheese longbow/greatsword ranger is running in wvw:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJATRjEq0ya/Kesw1ag+ga9CEAjdrfw9VEEp9Fr0gE-TFzDwAF3foxhAImKBFuAAAV+Bw8HLdBHeAAtU3ZyRAIhSwAHIARBMQA-w
u can swap out the signet of renewal for signet of the hunt if u want a little more mobility.
Guild Leader of Favorable Winds [Wind]
before we get started on giving us the rest of the pet skills on our f keys… lets work on the actual skill they did give us. the f2.
so they “fixed” pet responsiveness which made them actually use the skill when we told them to. great. but it still doesn’t work as well as they wanted it to…
the cast times are still too long… sure i can press f2 on my wolf and it’ll start channeling it immediately… LOL
well that’s fantastic, it “used” it when i told it to but now i still have to wait a second and a half before i actually get the effect
so wolves (canines in general) open with their knockdown. nice. so the pet takes time to get into range, then uses its knockdown skill. that’s good right?… LOL again. by the time the wolf uses finishes channeling its 1 1/4 second cast time for the knockdown, my target already moved out of range of the rooted pet and boom. i missed out on potential damage, knockdown, and a chance to get in some damage of my own while my target is cc’d…
so before the dev’s (they won’t anyways) give us the rest of our pet skills to control/choose, let’s ask for our f2 to be fixed… again.
