At the end of this conversation, and as the thread dies, i’d like to point out that for as many problems that i have with this game, and as much anger that i’ve had at ANet for some of the DUMBEST design decisions i have ever seen in any online game, i always come back and get hooked.

Moral of the story: If you enjoy it, it doesn’t matter who is online. There are always people online. And people who are looking for people to game with.

I’d say it’s on a low, not dying. I’ve seen MMO’s die, some slowly, some quickly. GW2’s got quite a lot going for it still. But there’s no doubt this game is at its low at the moment.

-The HoT expansion hype is long gone. There isn’t much to play for unless you really want to grind for Legendaries, and majority of the gamers that play GW2 won’t bother with it. And let’s face it, GW2 endgame PvE isn’t exactly its strength.

-sPvP is still as unpopular as ever, pro tourney esports viewership still low. There’s just no excitement to PvP, no new maps, no new game modes, conquest have and will always be stale and boring compared to deathmatch & capture the flag.

-WvW saw resurgence when Alpine made its comeback. Though the hype died down a bit, we’re back to cramming into EBG leaving Alpine fairly queue-less outside of reset nights and weekends. Guilds are still hurting, it’s still hard to recruit good players to fill their ranks and thus many guilds have already decided to move on to other games. Anet decided long ago they weren’t going to cater to GvG, forgetting that guilds are the backbone to longevity of PvP game modes.

With WoW Legion coming out in a couple of months, ESO/BDO launching with expansions/content, Battlefield 1 (fps genre I know but it’ll take my time away), Anet has limited time to keep people interested in GW2.

This isn’t to say people won’t leave and come back. GW2 is F2P so it’ll always be a game people can fall back to. But whenever people leave for other games or stop playing, they aren’t spending money here, and that’s what affects Anet more than anything else. When people don’t spend as much money, it’ll affect Anet’s development cycles and quality of content getting developed.

I agree with this. I’ve recently been playing alot more, and what i’m finding is that the new HoT zones are pretty barren, for the most part. Meta events are pretty much “every once in a while”. Which is terrible, because at launch, you couldn’t get into, or find a HoT map that had decent coordination.

I think the game is still fun. I think the legendary grind is still something to do, and i don’t think the game is exactly dying, but more so in a state of stasis, to see if ANet learns from past mistakes. For example: As beautiful, and well thought out that the HoT zones are, it all really just became a complicated mess of “stuff” that no one one really wanted to do, unless they can zerg it..which is kinda not happening all that much anymore.

They did nerf mob damage, so thats nice. I can ACTUALLY go into those zones now and move around a bit. Before, it was STUN > CONDI > STUN > 100XCONDIs > dead > kthnxbai. Meanwhile Morde’s minions are laughin it up. Too bad they laughed too much, and drove the a good chuck of the fanbase to other games, before they were nerfed into reasonable killing range. And ya know, what irks me, is that they did that due to the hardcore kids saying they wanted a challenge. Where are these people now? Well, they got mad over the gemstore and quit (or they’re off raiding). So now you have a game that doesn’t cater to the casual fanbase, and i’m sorry, but thats like 80% of the fanbase of any online game.

slamfunction.7462

Why not keep the same layout as Alpine BLs, and just change up the skin from time to time? Since the layout of Alpine is the best for all, why not make a desert skin, an pirate skin (thinking floating barges) and etc, with the same exact layout? How about modifying the Alpine BL with small things? Like an extra hill here or there?

Make the adjustments and changes subtle, and not to distracting.

Or, have a different map for each BL?

Let me ask you this….can you, honestly, trust a man who uses an overly grand and dramatic writing style to make an accusation with little to no actual evidence?

Is it “merely coincidence” that he uses excessive amounts of quotations to imply coincidence when a direct link would not be deduced if the evidence was presented neutrally?

Is it “merely coincidence” that he uses a writing style with phrases like “I will let you answer that” or “Let me ask you this” that imply neutrality when he is also leading people to the conclusion he wants them to draw?

Is it “merely coincidence” that his writing style implies guilt has already been clearly established when the evidence presented could be explained with half a dozen or more benign and completely reasonable explanations?

I will let you answer that, but to me, this is just like writing on the wall that points to one and only one truth.

He’s full of kitten and he knows it.

But seriously, dude, writing like this isn’t helping promote actual discussion nor is it scoring you any points with anyone with high school level critical thinking skills.

So then, let me ask one more question: Is it “merely coincidence” that John Smith has not answered me, or the community, with any explanation within 24 hours of this post being created? Since you like to pick apart my issue, let me be more specific: Is it merely coincidence that he hasn’t replied on how the involved parties (may or may not be a dev, directly) knew to begin dumping the items in question, and steadily lowering the price over the course of a month, or two?

Troll me all you want, but i’d like some answers, and i can assure you that it wasn’t “dumb luck” or “intelligent marketing”, or even “leaked patch details from a previous patch”. I can assure you of these things, because as a community, we are so driven for any “bone”(of information) that ANet throws to us, in terms of news, or progress on this game, that as soon as one person knows it, it goes viral both here, and on the subreddit.

And, its not only JUST the halloween skins. My community brought me up to speed on other incidents, just like this one. Such as the items on the TP that were collection items for an achievement called “Treasure hunter”. Apparently, the prices on these items soared, just before the announcement or patch was rolled out, where these changes went live.

Again, trolling me, is trolling yourselves. I understand you are so passionate about the game, that any idea of deceit from a company you’ve come to love and trust is the foulest thing you can imagine. It may not even be something the company condones. It may just be some dev’s buddies who got some insight that led them to this advantage on the market. That being said, i believe that ANet owes its playerbase some sort of assurance that the issue has been found, resolved, and will be prevented the next time something like this could potentially occur.

So, call everything i say is a fallacy, but the evidence is in the community’s observations, which have been thoroughly documented, not only on these forums, but on the subreddit as well. I think we deserve some sort of fairplay assurances from ANet internally, as well as their rules on hacking and cheating.

OP, I think you need to reread the definition of Insider Trading. Your accusation has nothing to do with the company manipulating RL stocks and securities using insider knowledge.

As much as players might want them to be, weapon/armor skins aren’t stocks.

While you’re rereading Insider Trading, I strongly urge you look up the term Libel.

~EW

Yeah…see, thats where things get to the point of ‘it just doesn’t matter’. Because it is a game, or form of entertainment, the same ethics and laws that govern a real world economy don’t apply. Thats what you are saying. And most likely, John, nor Anet, will do anything about this. So, it obligation or question of economic “fairness” resides with the community.

I’m saying that since real money is being used in THIS economy, it does matter. It matters alot. Since your basic player is being manipulated by a corporate entity.

Take it as you will.

According to that other post in this thread, it seems to be an ongoing thing. Since real money can be involved here, i can’t stress the seriousness of this matter. Please advise.

What is salami slicing?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salami_slicing

Remember the movie “Office Space”? That was the most mainstream example of it in media.

More to how it affects GW2: Remember when ya’ll messed with the gem-to-gold exchange? Well, it just so happens that if you have an odd amount of gems, these gems are never truly spent, unless you keep buying gems, and eventually come up with an ‘even value spent’, to zero out the amount of gems you actually have.

For example:
- I pay $10 for 800 gems.
- I buy an some sort of kit or etc for 460 gems
- This now leaves me with 340 gems
- i find something else to buy for 300 gems
- I now have 40 gems left
- i can’t buy anything for 40 gems, in the gem store
- So, to make value of that 40 gems, i convert it to gold
- Depending on the gem to gold rate, i’ll almost always still have anywhere from 1-10 gems left over, that i can’t do anything with
- Each gem is 0.0125 cents
- This leads to anywhere from 0.0125 to 0.125 cents that i’ve spent, that never sees any return, unless i buy more gems, and repeat the process until i zero out my gem balance

You can multiply these numbers by however many active customers you have, and see the scheme unfold every month, unless these are repeat customers. But, theres no solid way for the playerbase to know this. So, it can only be assumed that the gem to gold UI update was an elaborate salami slicing scheme.

Hello All,

In the past we’ve seen grand ploys to garnish your hard-earned cash into the GW2 gem store. Nothing so innocent as a really fab skin, or a black lion ticket. No, no… We’ve seen straight up “gambling” (halloween raffle for Halloween 2013 skins) and “Salami Slicing” (gem to gold exchange UI update).

Now, we are faced with the next big thing in ANet’s corrupted history: Insider Trading.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with insider trading, please google it.

How did Anet perform the illegal action of insider trading? Let me draw your attention to this very post:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/ghastly-grinning-shield-skin/first#post6071210

Now, i would like to draw your attention to this post, where an ANet developer released a comment on the GW2 sub-Reddit, but ANET_AndrewM:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4g3t53/so_i_found_this/d2grweu

“This is part of some updates that I’ve been working on with the mystic forge, though we had not intended it to go out with last weeks build, as some parts of the change still need some work.

I didn’t put this in the update notes since it wasn’t meant to go live yet, but since it apparently went through, we added the Bloodbound weapons, Shadow of the Mad King weapons, and some weapons with no way to get them anymore like Scarlet’s Kiss to the mystic forge as possible rewards for combining rare weapons."

Is this just “merely coincidence”? Could it be “merely coincidence” that a small group of players just all of sudden, decided to start lowering the prices on their backstocks of Halloween 2013 weapon skins? Could it just be “merely coincidence” that the market on such items was at an all time low, in terms of demand, that affected the price?

I’ll let you answer that, but for me, the two posts are liking writing on the wall.

Since we’ve easily allowed gambling, and salami slicing to occur without much resistance from the community, i believe this too shall pass, as no one will really care, and proceed to be happy about their new Halloween 2013 skin, much like i am with my new greatsaw. However, i wonder ‘how far’ is ‘too far’?

7/26/2016 – Update: It has happened again. This time with Stabilizing Matrix. Someone over on the subreddit found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4ur0o1/stabilizing_matrices_and_insider_trading/

How about the amount of content and “features” you get simply isn’t worth the price? FFXIV offered far more content and mechanics for a lower price.

FFXIV also requires an extra 12-15 bucks a month~ If Guild Wars 2 charged that, I’d have paid the price of HoT 8 times over by now. No thank you.

Note that i have no issues with this. I also don’t have any reason to troll the SE or FFXIV subreddit to complain or read other people’s compaints. Lemme tell, that $15 a month is COMPLETELY worth it to me. But, meh, d’ffrent strokes. d’ffrent folks.

I don’t /hate/ HoT, just don’t play it. I quit a month after it released.

Think of it this way: Someone’s parents built a house, a GREAT house, like mansion quality, billion dollar house, but then only built 3/4s of it. Then, they decided to let their teenage kids finish it, who had very little experience in house building. To top it off, they let the crazy-drunk-mentally-challenged uncle manage the kids, while the parents decided to go out of the country for 3 years, and never check on the kids. This is Guild Wars 2.

People still play it, because i mean honestly, who doesn’t like a free MMO? People still play TERA and SWOTOR, so why not? If i was homeless, and those kids were letting random people stay at the unfinished, billion dollar home, i most certainly would.

So there ya go. Love it or leave. No one cares. The parents make phone calls every so often to tell the kids they might be back home soon, but they been doing that for the last 2 years! LOL

Edit: Just to note, this game is most certainly the next-gen MMO to follow in Mythic’s footsteps, ala Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, just as i predicted 2 years ago. I give it at least 1 more year, before the devs go completely dark, and this game goes to auto-run mode until they shut the servers down.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

slamfunction.7462

Question is, why do people care so much about how much profit NCSoft makes or doesn’t make?

Because the game has/had so much promise that is being completely spoiled by latent development cycles and in-game poor economics (amongst a HUGE list of other things). So, those of us who are snide about the earnings, are more hoping that sales go absolutely terrible, so that ANet addresses these long-standing issues.

F2P will keep this game afloat for a while, but people do grow up and get jobs, and at that point, a free MMO isn’t much more than a Korean grindfest with that carrot on the stick never closer.

Just from experience, i think the market is learning how good sub’d MMOs are, compared to F2P MMOs, but there are those few, like GW2, that are cashing in on any given 16 yr old’s allowance. So there ya go.

Well, you flip out that big ‘ole wallet ya got there, and ya go to the gem store. Once there, spend alot of money gems, while buying completely meaningless things like pet rocks and outfits that you really can’t customize. Then, after you realize thats not giving you a fun and unique look, just start turning that hard earned cash into gems, and from there, gems to gold. Then, and only then, will you be able to really experience the fun of this game as you realize it costs right around $1000 to buy the materials to craft a legendary. Tis why the leveling up experience is less grindy, and the post cap game is all about the grind, unless you spend thousands of dollars on gems, or millions of hours. Your choice.

And if WoW isn’t enough, there is Hearthstone, HoTS, Diablo 3, and (soon) Overwatch. For what what you’d spend in GW2 to build a legendary (gem-to-cash conversion), you’d own all of the above games, AND have quite a bit of the F2P stuff unlocked.

Simply put: If you don’t mind spending money on a game, GW2 is not for you. Its like comparing Walmart with Macy’s. You either think smart and pay for value, or buy over-priced yuppy crap that you’ll end up putting on a garage sale in a year.

I’m sorry, but this IS “Greed Wars 2”. ANet promotes greed, because they want you to blow money on gems for gold conversions. Its just how it is. And if the game is geared towards that, then whats wrong with a greedy playerbase.

PRO: GW2 has the friendliest playerbase.
CON: GW2 has the greediest playerbase.

Honestly, nothing will change. ANet LOVES where things are right now, because they are making good money with the gem to gold transactions. Just except the fact that either is a 1+ year grind, or you spend RL money to do it faster.

Theory about gems to gold from other players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Here is something interesting i found: I quit GW2 and began playing Blizzard products again. For a little less that $300, i got the full SC2 series, The new Overwatch game (with added skins and other Blizzard games perks), at least 15 Heroes of The Storm champs, and about 15 skins. In GW2, $300 equals 1.5 Legendary weapons. 1.5 Legendary SKINS for $300!!!

Now, i won’t be the one to say its not worth it, because if yer a die hard GW fan, you’d give yer first born for something unique in game. What i am saying, is that the value you get from your money is very questionable when approaching the GW2 Gem Store.

Its just not worth it. And anyone who believes John Smith’s “reduction of liquid assets” to bring down deflation in the game, is fooling themselves, or deserves to be taken as a sucker. All they did was force more fans to purchase more gems, to convert it to gold. There ain’t no “tinfoil hat”. This is the reality of this game. The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll enjoy the game, knowing that the economy is little more than an elusive trap to get you to buy gems.

To stay the same was to die out. Just ask the dinosaurs. Now that they’ve upped the challenge they’ll surely lose a chunk of casuals, but it will be better for the long haul.

Yeah, they definitely will. And then, the game will be left to the 100k hardcore players, and you guys can fund the game. I’m sure that will go over well at ANet HQ…

GW2s New Direction

Unholy, you hit the nail on the head for me. I feel EXACTLY the same. The new zones, the raid, WvW…Its literally like playing a live beta, where stuff is not designed correctly, not well though out, and/or just broken all to H E L L.

At this point, i feel my only reason for purchasing the HoT expansion is the Revenant class, and Tyrian Masteries. The rest of is just to difficult or inaccessible for any normal solo, or duoing couple to handle.

And the sad thing is, ANet won’t change this. They know the game offers something unique to the market, so why should they change?

Simply put: We need competition in this market. We need other MMO companies to look at how GW2 is built, and recreate it with better polish and thought. Either that, or ANet speaks up and starts making productive changes to the expansion content, that allows easier access to all types of players and at all levels. I’m not talking about the NPE, but we need something here to CHANGE.

I love this game. I don’t want to quit playing it, but every single evening that i log in, just gives me another reason to hate it. And thats not a productive mindset to having a fun experience!!!

The “end game” changed. The old end game used to be either level alts and do maps or zone events on T6 zones, or do WvW. Either one required more movement, rather than optimized damage. ANet killed WvW, so not as many players are focused on getting around the zone and playing WvW.

Instead, everyone is focused on the new zones and raiding, which absolutely requires optimized DPS or survival, as those zones are tremendously hard to get around in, unless your in a group of 5 or more people.

Its like any relationship: When the benefits outweigh the negatives, you tend to stick around. But as soon as a smokin hot chick pays any attention to you, you are OUTTA HERE!

I digress: The issue is that for every good thing they put in the game, it spurns 10 REALLY bad things, it seems.

Why did they make Maguma so hard?

Pretty much what the OP said. I hate the place, because you can’t solo or duo it. It relies on having 6-7 players running around together, in order to get things done. On top of this, I rarely see tags, so i have no clue where to go. I hate to go to Pact Encampment all the time, but thats the only place i ever find a sizeable amount of people.

As with all the new maps, the issues are that the mob density, coupled with the size of the maps, and how difficult they are to kill solo, makes for a terrible experience. Again, they NEED to add more people to the zones.

Another thing that makes it bad, is that the LFG tool is a mess, since there is so much to look for now. It needs to be limited down to a ‘per zone’ basis.

I guess ill just have to complete my Tyrian Mastery track until they getting around fixing the situation with the Magumma zones.

When HoT released, and until tonight, i never had one crash. After the patch today, both me any GL have crashed a few times, while in the Hot areas, and mine GL crashed during Shatterer. Seems like there are some instabilities with the patch that came out today.

Been too busy with Pve-related progression to even consider WvW. The first week, i played around in it, to see what the new map was like, but past that, it just doesn’t interest me at this point. After the PvE stuffs have been exhausted, i’ll return back to WvW.

What i find entertaining about them, is that at one point, people really complained about the poopy drop rates of stuff, and that they weren’t dropping anything to justify the value. ANet decided to “boost” the drop rates on some of the more uncommon items, but then gradually, patch after patch reduced that drop rate a little here. A little there. Always kind snuck into the patch notes somewhere, until we ended up with the craptacular drops we get from them today!

The more you know! lol

I disagree with the +Healing Power comments. I am running Zealots (Power/Precisions/Healing). For legends, i use Jalik and Glint. My rune set is messed up atm, but looking for something that has power and healing boosts.

I use this build just for running around the various zones. Not WvWing. I think the +healing works great, however, i’m not a fan of the Ventari trait line anymore, seeing as Glint provides better benefits over Ventari.

Sometimes, i wonder if the people who do the gold to time translations (then complain about it) work jobs where they have to bill their time to a client of some sort. Furthermore, i wonder how much money IRL, they charge for going to the bathroom….

They do have interns, game tester, and any combination of lesser peons to do the actual blogging. Like 15 min conversation at the water cooler in the morning:

I have never been there but i cant imagine the water cooler being a popular hang out at a game company on a november morning in the state of washington.

Too literal, man. Could be an email, or quick meeting in the hallway, etc, etc… Why are we debating this gain? lol

Shots missed. As did yours, Skyline. The examples I gave are simple, stupid bugs that should have been picked up in QC and never released in the first place. And should take no time whatsoever to fix. They’ve released how many patches in the last 3 weeks? And did you miss the bit where I said “I’m an IT professional”? I’m an analyst/programmer. I’d be ashamed of myself if stuff like this got out into a live environment. Anet, apparently, aren’t.

And no, I’m not personally blaming John Smith. But he was quick to respond to a sucking-up-to-Anet thread. Responses to more critical comments are… rare, shall I say? Anet’s communication with its players has never been very good when there’s negative stuff around.

I can just imagine the kind of feedback people like you would give on the forums, if John and Colin would be streaming how they are playing guild wars 2 for 2 hours per day and 8 hours per weekend and then spend the rest of their work day blogging about it, while the things at the office go kittens up because nobody is doing their job.

God-Like ANet Dev: Fantastic, m’boy! I got 15 silk, 3 Powerful Blood, and crafted 1 Deldrimor Steel ingot!
Peon 1: Ok, i’ll put that on the blog under your name.
God-Like ANet Dev: HA-HA! Thats a real go-getter! What was your name again?
Peon 1: Uh..uh…“Ghostcrawler”?
God-Like ANet Dev: Good, i like that. Where have i heard that before….
