Does the engineer belong in a team

In a serious team does an engineer really belong? I do not see a role that then engineer excels at other than trolling. My main is an engi, and I do not see any role an engi can fulfill that is vital to winning.

I have seen in solo q that some of the people that main engi make it to the top 20, so you can clearly do well as an engi. However, I get the feeling this is simply because these players are extremely skilled rather than filling a vital role.

Unfortunately, neither of those runes are available in pvp. I was considering runes of strength as an alternative.

@Anomaly.7612: The supply crate is not as overpowered as you think. Consider it has a 3 minute cooldown, it will likely only get popped 3 times during a match. I have been playing a zerker warrior recently (rather than my engi), and it is relatively easily to make short work of those turrets.
@condi builds: You realize you should not be able to fight every build. That is why you have something called a team. It is nice to see something in the game that actually makes you less useful and have to work with your teammates to overcome. Also, the engi has almost no condi removal. You can probably kill it by throwing on some conditions, get out of turret range, let them do their work, reapply when needed.

I strongly suggest you try playing builds you think are overpowered before you complain about them on the forums. It may just be the person was a really good player. Playing the builds will give you a good understanding of how to counter them as well.

Here are some hints for killing engi’s:
nades: move randomly, it is rather difficult to predict your location to actually hit you.
bombs: Do not bother getting into melee range with this engi unless you can burst them down really fast. Range them. Do not chase this type of engi either.
Turrets: kill the turrets first. A smart engi, will try to put the turrets in less noticeable locations. I think the problem here is that no one was playing turret engi for so long that people forgot how to counter them. With the current heavy focus on conditions by many people it is making for a perfect environment to run a turret engi. I think I may just have to switch to that from nades.

In general, remember you have a team for a reason. There are things others can do better than you. Know your strengths and weaknesses and know them for the other popular builds.

I would never use sigil of paralyzation as an engi. You have 1 stun every 3 minutes. I would use sigils of strength and battle if you want to stack might. I would also use rabid rather than celestial.

Guardian is the longest decap then cap while keeping them alive though. Too much stability, agis, and blocks. But still fun to do. You can only decap foefire from a bad bunk. I still maintain decap engi is not useful, but kitten good fun for annoying the hell outta people.

I am personally surprised this has been effective. I would have expected most players to focus on your turrets, then try to kill you. I have been speaking against turret builds for a while, I will have to give it a try again. I have a feeling the only reason this is useful is cause the player base is not used to them anymore or are not spec’d for power as much any more.

Lert is right about the long duration on bleeding may be undesirable. But the ones usually ran are balthazar or sometimes nightmare. I cannot justify balthazar due to only one way of applying burning, and I just do not like skill 6 that much on nightmare. I noticed a few bugs with the sigil of agony when I was testing it in pvp and I think the sigil of strength is just a better choice with the high number of crits, I am still undecided on the other sigil.

Okay, I will address your last post. If the decap engi wants your far point and you do not have the burst/conditions(so little condition removal) to kill it. Just leave it and help your team at the other two points. By continuously pushing far, the decap engi will leave their team outnumbered unless you make the mistake of actually fighting. If you are not a burst/condi spam build, do not bother attacking the decap engi. Also, time things correctly, you do not want to get interrupted by the many CC’s.

Oops, I fogot this. If they are running turrets, they are not a decap engi, they are just an engi with a rifle. Kill turrets and engi will be useless.

I do not get how you people are having difficulties playing against engi. Try playing one for a while, then come back and complain if you think they have anything overpowered.

The OP is clearly not talking about gambling. Just adding incentive to not going afk. I like it. I think for compensation, the gold of the afk player should be split equally between the rest of the players.

Decap engi was never actually that useful. Decap engi is not that effective for damage output or support, so they could not be that effective during a team fight. If they push far right off their team is outnumbered at mid causing them to lose the fight, then they get rolled at far. If they go to the mid fight, the other team should still have the advantage in the fight.

N.B. using a decap engi on spirit watch is surprisingly effective. Also, the team comp that tries to bunk all three points can use the decap engi well.

Sorry, but the turret engi builds are still not viable. If you cannot handle a turret engi build, you need to re-evaluate your build or how you go about fighting a turret engi. To be honest an engi is never needed is a team composition. Anything an engi can do, another profession can do better.

I noticed many of the posted builds for engineer use superior rune of balthazar rather than krait, yet it seems an engi will inflict bleeding more often than burning. It seems the krait rune is better, am I missing anything?

The biggest part of your damage, as engineer, comes from burns. Its not a marginal difference either. So adding + duration to you burns is far more benefitial to your overall dmg.

If you are running just nades and p/s, you do not get the largest part of your damage from burns. There is no burning except for incendiary powder (explosives 9). You have bleeds from pistol 1, shrapnel (explosives 2), and sharpshooter(firefarms, which I chose over speedy kits cause I wanted more vulnerability stacking). If you run p/p and use bombs it would totally be worth it to have extra burn damage.

I have been seeing waaaay more raging in PvP than I used to. I guess partially because of the influx of new players. I personally have gotten fed up with the verbal abuse being directed towards new players. I am starting to report anyone who verbally abuses another player and I suggest others do the same.

Rather than calling people noobs, telling them to play more hotjoin, or go back to pve. Give them advice, be nice, make the PvP environment helpful and friendly. In the end this will pay off by bringing in more players that will eventually be decent and not losing current players. If you know some one is new, ask them if they are using a metabuild and if they are not direct them to it. Remember that pasting links into guild wars is useless, give them search terms that can be remembered.

PLEASE HELP MAKE THE PVP ENVIRONMENT ENJOYABLE FOR ALL.

The lick wounds is definitely over powered. Ranger is the only character is pvp that I would not cleave or bleed out because of its pet. One person I run dungeons with every week is a ranger and I have seen self rezzing that should simply not be possible. My group has wiped at bosses that do massive damage and the ranger pet just rezzes the ranger right through it, no problem at all.

I am a pvx player which has definitely been playing more PvP recently and I will say that the rewards are not in line with the rest of the game. PvP has significantly worse rewards for time put in. I will still play it excessively, but it is a shame that I have to go play pve or wvw if I want things like tier 6 mats.

Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to easily tell if you are in combat during a jumping puzzle? I will frequently fall due to being in combat when I think I am not. If any anet staff read this, is it possible to add an in combat symbol to the buff/condition area?

Please make it more difficult to insta kill people at the hammer. With the way it currently is, the team with the best player at the hammer wins.

Since no one has commented on this in a while. PLEASE PLEASE add this feature, it is soooo very annoying to have to type out a web link some one posts. It cannot be that difficult to add in since you log all messages anyhow. Just give me a right click option so I can copy a line of text to clipboard. I bet it would not be that many lines of code.

This build utilizes the flamethrower most of the time, which is great because the number one skill is a powerful cone shaped aoe attack. This is great during skill lag. Also, the backpack regenerator helps greatly because you cannot always pop healing during skill lag.

While running this in WVW the flamethrower must be kept equipped at all times because it gets you up to 6 stacks of might. Every 5 seconds while running switch to med kit and back to keep swiftness up and drop skill 5 on medkit whenever possible. While running if you see a static field go down try to blast it with rocket boots or shield for more swiftness.

When in combat switch weapon every ten seconds to get an extra 3 stacks of might that last for 20 seconds. Use appropriate pistol and shield skills at this time. It is great to use the number 3 skill on the flamethrower and drop it at your feet and blast it with magnetic shield to get more stacks of might. Dropping elite supply crate and then rocket booting into combat is great for even more stacks of might. Additionally, while in combat make sure to use incendiary ammo whenever possible…really just try to use all skills as the cooldown runs up. However, if it is to hectic in battle just stick with the flamethrower and make sure to use your aoe interrupts and blinds in addition to the damage skills. Keep elixirs on an easy to reach button since it is your oh crap button when you are about to get rolled by the other zerg or go down (remember this does not work well during skill lag it is best to dodge at this point). The rocket boots are also excellent to get you out of combat so you can heal up.

Survivability is the main focus of this build. The runes of melandru and the bowl of lemongrass poultry soup make it so that conditions just fall off. When the lemongrass soup runs up you will notice you die much easier. The pvt gear is there for survivability as well. The traits are selected for survivability as well

As for traits:
Fireforged trigger – is chosen because the flame thrower is your main weapon.
Juggernaut – is chosen to give you more toughness and more stacks of might.
Protective shield – is chosen to give you a little protection against crits
Stabilized armor – is chosen because you will get knocked down and stunned a lot.
Protection injection – is chosen to give you even more protection when cc’d
Backpack regenerator – is chosen because it is great. During skill lag it help a lot and sometimes gives you that little extra health you need
Speedy kits – because you want perma swiftness in wvw.

Thanks for the advice. I finally got it.

I was using a pistol/shield bomb build with pvt armor with melandru runes. After phase 1, I kitted her clockwise dropping bombs whenever she was close. I tried to stay about 1/3 way between center and edge (closer to center is better). I used the pistol 2&3 skills when I had a chance. Dropping the elite supply crate in the center in a good idea. Use the Bowls of orrian truffle and meat stew for the extra dodges and superior sharpening stones for extra damage. I also used elixer B when i needed the speed(after a cripple), plus it gives you loads of other useful things. Keep elixer s on a fast to click button for when the rift orbs pull you into an aoe.

Traits:
Explosives:3,7,&8
Inventions: 5 & 8
Alchemy: 5 &9

I won the first try after I put on music. I had some Adema going. I would strongly suggest this as the most important buff :P

I have been having this same problem today. People just stand there waiting and leaving me dead. It clearly would not be a waste of their time, except they do not want to have to wait for me to take a turn. This was clearly not thought out very well and anet should fix it because trying to beat liadri is frustrating enough.
