After you fix that you’ll also need to reduce the diversity of builds so you can actually balance the game and have different classes interact more or less the same a gainst other classes and not have a lets say staff zerker ele die in 1second by dps guardian and then D/D ele beating the same guardian because at the end of the day both are elementalists and should more or less have the same capabilities..

I am not sure about the rest of PvPers but I personally love build diversity. Yes it is super difficult to balance, but it makes game play more fun. It is fun to be able to master a profession and be able to completely switch up play style between games within that profession. Be better if we had templates.

The algorithm takes into account your leaderboard position and rank. So if you play a lot of pvp you will be higher up on the leaderboard. The rank and leaderboard position may offset your actual rating, thus giving you people to fight that are more skilled than you.

Get your bunker warrior or guard in there. I’ve been playing a fairly bunker-ish warrior in the last couple of weeks, and even without all that offensive power I was surprised to see how the rocket turret felt like wet paper. I mean, couple of seconds of stability is all you need to make almost all skills and turrets of the turret engi completely useless.

Also, there is actually someone (hehe) playing turret engi who isn’t ashamed of it? What is wrong with people? What has the world come to? Seriously, human decency is dead. DEAD, I tell you.

It makes people rage so hard, it truly is funny. I actually do not do full turrets, I use bomb kit for various reasons. I cannot stand the lack of skills on a regular turret engi. I do use pirate runes because I need the extra AI for making people rage. This does make condi damage extra painful.

The bomb kit is good cause you can use the sigil of energy and speedy kits (have to give up accelerant packed turrets for it). The smoke bomb can help you actually get off stomps. In addition, smoke bomb can be used to get stealth for a far push. Just put down healing turret, big ol’ bomb, smoke bomb, use jump shot, blow up healing turret, and activate rumble. 8s of stealth. You can use this stealth to escape as well if you get pushed hard. You have a fire field for getting might. Big ol’ bomb is good for rezzing, just put it down before you start the rez. Between the thumper turret, rifle-net shot, and big ol’ bomb it is great for decaping points.

@Justin: I am glad you keep trying to improve matchmaking and everything. However, a quick forum post before you do it would be nice. Just tell us what disruption you are expecting. I do not even care if you tell us what you are up to at that time, just nice to know what to expect.

I don’t think everyone would completely acknowledge that, being people will still post and complain three days after Justin made a post about it.
He could make 4-5 changes in an hour without us realizing it. He shouldn’t excessively post about each and every change.

He only needs to post about the changes that he knows will affect us.

You still have to get out of combat to switch builds. I think it would make wvw more entertaining. At the very least it would help with those long runs. The fact you spend a large amount of time running about in wvw is one of the more boring aspects.

When I play turret engi I find I can survive against mesmers for quite some time simply by avoiding line of sight, dodging at the right times, and only going to the point if the mesmer decides to try a decap. Oh, and cc the mesmer every chance I get.

It takes all of five seconds to take out a turret engy with a mesmer GS. If you think a class is becoming a prevalent problem, play a counter.

From what I gathered in an earlier form the problem was to do with they wanted to make a template that would work for pvp,pve, and wvw. The previous discussion with the devs make me think the coding is not the problem, its figuring out what needs to be coded.

So you want to kitten the classes that counter builds requiring melee range? You realise that melee range classes include d/d ele and every type of warrior, even cele engis function best at close range. In other words, you would be making classes that are already complained about for their tankiness even more survivable.

Edit: How on earth is gim(p) an offensive word? It means ‘reduce the effectiveness’ >.>

I would like to see the rangers stop being mindless. Give people some way to actually counter lich form. Give squishier builds a way to kite while staying on point. Really, just add things to the map that require the player to be more aware of positioning. Skyhammer went too far in this cause a minor screw up would mean insta-death.

So you’re opening up a whole new can of worms with that.

That is the point. It changes up game play for melee builds. Currently I see much more ranged combat than melee. Melee builds could really use some help staying alive.

It would be interesting to have a post/pillar in the center of all the points. This would be especially useful for the center point of foefire. This would allow you to intelligently avoid ranged damage. Additionally you could kite more effectively.

I personally like using the map terrain to my advantage during a fight and there should be more terrain around/inside the point for this.

As a condition ranger, I much rather fighting turret engi than fighting a pro celestial ele, which is ridiculously strong and survivable.

So true. I was playing turret engi last night and 1v1ing a condi ranger was brutal. I had to spend most of my time trying to avoid line of sight while holding the cap. How fast you can stack that bleed is insane. Although I will admit I was not using the melandru runes.

No, I have not played gw2 pvp in a long time and I am just commenting for no reason whatsoever. Everyone has played against the cele builds. I ask if the person has tried playing the build because many people find a build OP or whatever until they actually try to play it. Once you do play it, you will be able to counter it better.

The only one that significantly bothered me was the cele ele because the amount of sustain they have during a fight. Combining that with might stacking for damage and they are very difficult to fight.

So there was no balance patch released Nov 4th? Keep in mind there were holidays in there. I would assume that is partially responsible for the fact we did not get it at the beginning of January.

They have been doing major balance changes every 6 months, have they not. This was a minor balance patch. They seem to do minor changes every 2 months. You would know this if you actually read the game update notes.

What do you expect from a company with around 300 employees. Have reasonable expectations.

-I still fall down the hole at stillness every so often (over 2000 pvp matches played).
-Frequently forget what color my team is.
-I find making people rage at turret engis entertaining.
-I used to always forget to switch weapons between pvp and pve…I just started using the same weapon in pve so I would stop doing this.
-I like to try to make people think they are losing to a noob. I think this is a common one.
-Sometimes I will go out of my way to kill people with just the wrench (skill 1 on engi tool kit). Still not sure why I enjoy doing this.
-I sometimes toy with bad players for so long that one of their teammates shows up and I get killed.
-sometimes my left hand ends up on esdf and it takes me a bit to realize why my movement is messed up.

@rainbow: I have read a bunch of these posts complaining about match making and it seems they have had a few issues. This is why Justin wanted to know the account you were on, he was going to check if match making has been a problem for you. You could have been grouped with a party of four against a party of five a bunch of times and just had bad luck with the party of four.

From what I can tell the devs do seem to care about our opinions. They listen to the player base and solicit people to give their suggestions sometimes. I have seen them claim on the forums that they lurk heavily on the forums and do not post cause they do not have the time.

It would be nice if people had an option in the menus or something to choose to only play matches with no groups. Remind them when selecting the option it will result in longer queue times.

I do not mind the long time between balance updates. It takes quite some time after an update for the meta to settle and for OP builds to become clear. Even given this, every 4 months would be more reasonable.

If a build is truly overpowered you would see full teams running the build and winning all the time. The only build I have seen full teams run is turret engi, and they still get stomped by competent players.

Because this is a team based PvP you do not need to remove the ability for people to play that build, it just forces both team to have at least one player using the build.

The metabattle page for d/d ele suggests that the d/d ele is weak to Axe Longbow Warriors, Hambow, Condi Engi

I am pretty sure Anet balances around a 5v5 conquest mode. They do not seem to care much about the outcome of a 1v1. It is up to you to recognize which builds you can generally beat and which you should try to disengage from.

With any of these skills that are annoying, you should expect them from the profession and be prepared for it or disengage from the fight if you cannot handle it.

It does rely heavily on AI, but you will notice a massive difference in effectiveness between a good and bad player. The rifle is still the main source of damage from the build. Remember the game is balanced on 5v5, not 1v1. If you are 1v1ing a turret engi you are doing it wrong.

The OP’s suggestion would make turret engi builds even less effective on a team. You do realize turrets have extremely long cool downs which prevents the engi from just picking them up and taking the turrets with them. Already teams with turret engis have trouble against good teams because the lack of mobility of turrets. Usually this allows the other team to have more numbers in a fight. Or it is equal numbers with the engi not being that effective. Most teams avoid fighting on a point with turrets when there are equal numbers or they take out the turret engi ASAP.

The pet follows the ranger around. Engis would love to have the turrets actually follow them. Your comparison does not work. The fact the turrets still work without the engi there at least partially makes up for this. The turrets despawn after 5minutes btw.

It is your job to ‘shut-down’ the turrets while the engi is not there to protect the turrets. Deactivating the turrets if the engi is not there would reduce the utility of the turrets significantly. This would basically make the turret engi build even more glued to a point than they currently are. Why would you want to reduce the amount of strategy that can be used.

I have wondered for a while why anet does not make the pvp section of gw2 completely free to play. This would likely increase the number of players and may even result in game sales to people that want to play the rest of the game. Most popular pvp games are free to play.

I find every engi build can be beaten with heavy CC and/or heavy condition damage. If you can manage to interrupt their heal you should be able to easily kill them. Warriors are not a great one to fight an engi with, which could be part of your problem.

I do not agree with nerfing this build further (keep in mind accelerant packed turrets is getting a nerf). This would make the build completely useless, thus eliminating a potential strategy during a game. I have played this build a bunch, and it is not effective against many other builds out there 1v1 (usually burst builds).

I have to agree with Susulemon (Totally warrior advice. It should read AOE and CC) and XGhoul on ways to deal with them.

i throw the weapons in the mystic forge for a chance for a precourser. at least i can sell the trash exotic.

it would be nice if we had a reward track without tomes of knowledge and trasnmutation charges. i got now all professions on 80 and they are stacking up.

Gotta agree with those people saying team q rather than solo q. It is usually a more pleasant experience all around and does not have spirit watch and skyhammer, which I find require special builds.
Going solo in team q is fine, but if you can get even one friend to play with you using teamspeak or something and you play well, you can pick up random people that you notice play well and then q with them. I have done this a few times and it can be a very pleasant experience.

The poor condition clearing makes the engi extremely vulnerable to being focused by condition based builds, which happen to be more popular since the april 15th update. This weakness is huge in team fights.

Thanks for all the replies, but no one really identified the role the engi fills and excels at in a team yet. The only role I really see for the engi, is similar to a staff ele. This is usually AOE damage on point to force the other team off point or suffer the fun condition known as death. These ele’s, if well played, can be very effective at helping your team win a fight. Especially since they have more healing and condi removal available to them than the engi.

For AOE team fight support I have been having some success with a nade/elixer build. I figured since the elixers are your only good condi clear that I might as well try a build with them. This has made it much easier to survive with all the conditions flying around. The large amount of AOE vulnerability you spit out seemed very effective for team fights. It does seem that this build fills the role of the AOE damage during team fights and may have more survivability than a staff ele. Although, I am still unsure which one can perform this role better or if there is a better role for the engi.
