Does any other class have a ranged ability where using it becomes a serious risk?
What about the classes that throw a pull into a Feedback and get pulled to you instead?
Ohhh, I went to the Mesmer forum to have a look and found a gold mine. Some Mesmer was complaining about Feedback not working right.
We had a chat recently on how we could use D/P #3 skill to pull with style the jade colossus in the Jade Maw fractals. And you know what? It works with feedback too it seems
I’m so sick of those reflect skills in big WvW fights it’s time to show that Mesmer he has to slot a different utility now if he doesn’t want to be force pulled into our zerg without any means to prevent it :p
It not work in untoppable mobs, at least not anymore far i had saw, neither whit stunt resistance mobs like the jade creatures of the Jademaw Fractals. And 1.5 seg of turnig gray a legendary boss each 40 seg. is stupid for a elite, better any other. Im runnig a venom share built and i can tell you, is a not very long stun duration at least all the team rotate their attacks for that, if dont, it last 3 seg. max because BV dont stack.
If the 1 seg. cast of BV were changed in PvE to instat cast like all the others venoms, it would be a very good interrup for big bosses, working even for no SV thieves, that is what im suggesting. The 2 seg of duration, well, not needed if the casting time were intant, i can admit that.
Some creature types are intrinsically immune to stuns. Even a lowly jade colossus or earth elemental will be immune. But a creature that acquired immunity through defiant because it’s a champion or legendary will be vulnerable to BV. I didn’t try to stun Abominations recently though, they were vulnerable last time I tried.
BV stuns bosses ignoring defiant. It stuns Abominations even if they are “unstoppable”
It’s not that great but has it’s uses. With Venom Share it can disable a boss a rather long time for a res or a heal.
No caltrops or engineer goo on the ground?
If they are invisible, how do you know if you are using these skills in the right location to hit them? On the corpse I assume, but most good thieves will use shadowstep stomping so that they are nowhere near the corpse for the channel and pop to them just before the animation finishes.
Most thieves cannot spare burning two long CD shadowsteps to make a stomp.
It’s not worse than mist form stomp, elixir X stomp, distortion stomp or the countless other ways to stomp someone practically unchallenged.
In fact, short of Necro, I don’t think there’s a class worse than Thief to do stomps safely.

I don’t think this game PvP needs MORE survivability. Survivability = boring. Killing = fun.
I agree with others that the main issue is the lack of skill required to use it. The concept is generally very boring (just watch your enemies health pool and press 2 when it gets low).
How about increasing the cost to 5 initiative but return 2 initiative on hit? In that way you actually need to think before using it, P/D becomes harder to escape with while still keeping its offensive power, and you cant just spam 2 on a running low HP target to win if it uses its dodges, blinds and blocks well.
Changing the way the targeting works is also an interesting idea.
Spaming 2 on a P/D set? Who loses to that crappy skill? The most useless weapon skill in the thief arsenal.
No. As a necro our trait lines are so scattered that we need an amulet to define our builds.
Everyone would be affected the same, and it’s more a symptom of poor trait placement than not.
Can use only one works, but it’s longer…uniquely equipped means nothing to me at all, and includes the word unique. That wouldn’t make me think I couldn’t use two at all.
I think there should be a mouseover so when you mouseover the word unique, it says what it means. Even more, if you can’t use it, you shouldn’t be allowed to buy it, which would save tons of trouble.
Why only one word? Here’s an example of lines one can find on the item tooltip :
- Ascended
- Ring
- Unique
- Required Level : 80 (one word right?)
- Account Bound
“Can only use one” or “Can only equip one” fit perfectly if a little long. “Uniquely equipped” is weird for sure but something weird catches your eyes. Bonus points if this line is put in red when you already own or equip one such items but it’s not foolproof.
Btw, a mouseover over a mouseover is poor user interface for obvious reasons.
Besides, honestly. In the current game situation we have, the real effects of “Unique” on the ascended rings and earrings is 1% gameplay related (You cannot get twice +5 power for the same Offensive Infusion item. Wait, did we find someone that paid hundreds of ectos and fine T6 mats for +5 to a stat?) and 99% confusion inducing related.
ANet should never have done this Unique thing. All it causes are complaints, annoyed players and customer support loss of time for an incredibly minor and insignificant gameplay effect.
(edited by stof.9341)
Except that it’s a relatively standard MMO term, and many people do understanding. Out of curiousity, what word would you use instead?
I don’t remember playing a single MMO with “Unique” type items at all. I’d replace it with something user friendly like :
- “Can only use one”
- “Uniquely equipped”
Vote for amuletless sPvP! All stats from traits, bunkers nerfed.
In a sense, amuletless sPvP achieves what the OP asks : since the stats come only from traits, you got quite a liberty to make the build you want.
The top and bottom of a leaderboard is usually far away from 50% w/l ratio because there’s very often more players of lower skill level available for them than of higher skill level.
Well, the sigil works on both and it’s probably by design.
Should I assume that since Tactical in PvE/WvW lasts 2s base, a Minor Sigil of Paralysation would have the exact same effect as the Superior one?
Exactly. When someone says they got a 100% win rate (on a significant number of games), it can as well mean he’s the best player ever that never loses, or much more likely that he always plays against players that are a lot weaker than him. How that happened ? I don’t know but that’s the conclusion you should take from his w/l ratio.
The W/L ratio you can find on various leaderboards is more a tool to see if the matchmaking system of the game is working correctly than to measure a player skill.
What’s that complaint about “Black Powder” now? XD
w/l rating is awful to rate players by skill anyway. I’m happy the rating system doesn’t take those into account at all.
And Incinerator gives permanent burning? After all, you hand is on fire when you use it.
Edit : there has been some deleting going on. This post isn’t relevant anymore.
My theorycraft is rather simple. You were in WvW against maybe upleveled players and maybe players with masterwork gear.
And the whole topic so far was for sPvP with weaker berserker gear, no food and against 100% level cap with fully exotic level 80 geared players (obviously).
(edited by stof.9341)
Don’t reduce Heartseeker range. It’s the only mobility tool we have in D/x except for D/P and this one cannot be used without an hostile target so it’s not as good.
Well, you can get it in WvW since the last patch no? For a very cheap number of tokens too, and it’s a skin item so no need for transmutation stones.
They could just inspire themselves with other games daily, like that nice game called Guild Wars 1 I think. Not sure who made it but it had some awesome implementation for dailies.
I leveled my thief at this time :
- Stealth removed agro
- Pistol Whip didn’t get 15% damage nerf
- Caltrops lasted 15s and not 10s
I could have used that food giving HP on crits but I didn’t knew about it at the time. It was fun times. Get a group of risen, 2 pistol whips and bam, 3 dead risens. Rince and repeat
Well, to change a 7k backstab to a 13k, the best way is to aim for the back, not the front :p
And the less obvious ones : don’t test your damage on a high toughness player neither on a Protection covered player.
Use 6 scholar runes for another 10% bonus damage.
And to get the highest raw backstab number, you need to have 7 initiative or more when it lands. When you do the combo in this order “BV+AS+C&D+steal+BS”, with only 10 points in trickery you only have 6 initiative left so you are missing on 10% bonus damage. You can increase BS damage a lot by using AS after C&D lands and before you BS. Or you replace your 30/30/0/0/10 build with a 25/30/0/0/15 to get 3 extra initiative max and you can keep your current “skill rotation”.
IE, Ele’s won’t ever move from DD unless of a TOTAL Staff/Scepter overhaul … and who can blame them … they only have 3 weapons -.-"
;)
Staff, scepter, dagger, focus. I count 4 weapons :p
This daily system is the best I’ve come across, they reward you for logging in each day and keeping the game world alive. You can choose how you want to complete the dailies, not the same repetitive task over and over again. You should check out the WoW forums and see the pain they are going through. We have it 100 times better here.
GW1 dailies were MUCH better. They rewarded you more for hard things. More for taking handicaps. They were very specific and unless you had already completed the game at 100%, they had a great chance to be something you never did.
GW1 dailies converted to GW2 would be like :
- Go do this specific instance story path. Bonuses if you do it with an handicap.
- Go kill a specific champion. Some of those were instances end bosses. Bonuses if you do it with an handicap.
- Go vanquish a map. Basically, you had to play in hard mode and clear a whole map of all hostile life. Those were very rewarding in money and reputation points which you had to grind too for various reasons. Doing the daily at the same time gives you extra rewards.
Also, you could just login, talk to the NPC and collect the daily missions without doing them today in case you lacked time. You could save up to 3 dailies of each type for later that way.
GW2 dailies hold 0 comparison in the level of interest they provide. They are unfun as possible except the WvW component. For those that like PvP. They are a pure mindless busywork to keep us playing.
Who said ANet uses an basic ELO system? They already were using the Glicko-2 variant for WvW matching. The variant uses the same principles as XBox Live MM btw, and it is very fluid for the first few games of a new player to hasten his placement at the correct place.
It’s not the number of wins that matter but the quality of those.
if 7 wins against top level teams puts you top 50 then their rating system is horrid.
Not really. 7 wins is consistent enough for the system to place the guy rather high in the ranking. I think Microsoft MMS in the XBox Live is confident about your ranking after 4-5 games already. This guy did 11 games.
It’s not the number of wins that matter but the quality of those.
You’re playing a game with 80 levels… this game has had vertical progression from DAY ONE. Yet you ignore that fact don’t you.
The 80 levels are like an extended tutorial. It’s ok, it’s a clear point not too far off to reach before you are at max trait capacity.
Skill > Stats. That extra stat boost a max Ascended gear gives won’t save you if you don’t know how to kite/dodge.
Skill > Stats, up to a point. That extra boost my partial Ascended gear gives already saved my life a couple times, each time I got away with just 50 HP. It exists, it matters and it bothers me that I don’t have it. It bothers me to think others I fight have much worse gear than me too. I don’t want either.
Don’t put stats behind a grind. Only put skins and titles and achievements. And put them behind some CHALLENGING grind, not mindless.
They said condition thieves are weak cause they only got bleeding and token poison. Which is too easy to cleanse and so too weak. And they were thinking of putting some burning somewhere.
C&D burns initiative even if you fire it at the wind. Also, the trait that is used to make it more spamable by reducing the cost by 2 actually instead gives back the thief 2 initiative (out of 6) when he enters stealth. So when he whifs his C&D on a miss/dodge/evade/block/immune there is a huge initiative cost in the process.
There are mystic forges in the WvW. There are crafting stations too.
Well, they are rather serious about a nerf to thief burst.
Hmm, I don’t remember a daily that couldn’t be completed entirely in WvW. Care to show an example ?
If you like to WvW, most of your dailies can be gotten just running around. At the end of your play time, look and see what’s left.
The end of my playtime is right after dailies reset. Rather annoying if you ask me.
If you got a lot of heals you plan to use, toughness is better. If you get to face mostly condition damage, vitality is better.
Glass canon builds aren’t much better either. Heck, it wasn’t a joke when I suggested plain removing the amulets from sPvP :p
I’d love if ANet let us configure the custom servers much more than the plain boring options they have currently. Banning skills or items for example.
I’d say balance IS terrible because bunkers are a boring thing and the game would I hope be better and more fun without them.
Just add a feature to “/report” some sieges placements. Make maybe the report only doable by commanders. And once enough reports are given, the user is banned from siege placement and supply collection for a moment.
Hot joins are full of thieves. 50% of the players in hot joins each time I go there are thieves. See remark about “dead in 0.2s”.
Casuals do not expect to be pro after picking up the game for 5 minutes. Casuals expect to have fun playing the game. This is achieved usually by not making them play against pros first.
As for your remark about gear grind, you’d be amazed how many players go to WvW with greens and yellows. And they don’t complain. Because casuals don’t really care about gear and it doesn’t matter THAT much in WvW either so they are happy.
And I never said “no one tries”. Try to think less in black and white and stop trying to pass your own personal story/experience/anecdote as some kind of rule. Besides the simple fact that “you looked at your build, looked at their tactics” etc… makes you largely above the average player.
I don’t do tournies on a serious team. I group with friends when they’re on, solo queue when I have time and no one else is on, and hotjoin every other time. I’m rank 40 and I haven’t gotten bored yet. By your logic new players to Call of Duty would quit immediately if they’re not good enough. Everyone starts somewhere.
The mists seems WAY more casual friendly than WvW if only for that fact that you don’t have to spend countless hours farming gear to be competitive. You can configure your gear and build for free without wasting gold. You don’t have to pay for repairs. You spend more time fighting players in small battles and less time running around looking for something to do.
People who play pvp want to kill players, right? You have to get better at your class in order to kill players which means countless fights, respecs, gear changes etc. All of this is easier to accomplish in the mists. You’re not going to get better at your class in WvW where the numbers are always tilted toward one team, gear and consumables play a huge role, level plays a huge role, etc. Spamming ranged attacks at a zerg isn’t going to teach you the finer nuances of your class.
In sPvP you have the same gear options as everyone else with no consumables. The fights aren’t based on how good your gear is or if you’re up leveled or not. It eliminates that variable and forces you to be a better player on a balanced playing field. How can that be considered less fun PvP for people that truly enjoy PvP?
But you are talking a lot from your point of view. I was talking from a general/casual point of view.
Call of Duty allows “noobs” to have their fun even against strong players through various means, not the less the fact they don’t put them against fully organized tryhard teams if possible something GW2 doesn’t seem to do. There’s also a lot of tools in the game for them to get their fun, be it blind explosive spam lucky kills down to some win streak power if they can get one.
What fun is there in GW2 sPvP when you aren’t as good as the other players? The odds are that you’ll get some humiliating 0.2s kill from behind by a thief or get to fight 1v1 against some unkillable tanky elem/guardian and be incredibly frustrated because, you cannot even dent their HP.
The frustrating part is the turn off. You aren’t even a tiny bit close to a chance to kill them. It’s not like CoD where you get killed and can say : “well, at least I got him to 20% HP, next time I’ll get him!” Here, you are just baffled by some players that seem for all purposes unkillable for you
WvW doesn’t that problem as much because noobs can just follow some group, tag some targets and get loot bags. Nothing of the like in sPvP.
sPvP is very frustrating to play for not that good players. WvW isn’t.
You’re only ‘not that good’ at the beginning, just like everyone else. I’d rather be bad at sPvP than be good at WvW.
The beginning matters a lot when it causes players to stop playing altogether.
Also, sPvP is definitively unfun when you do too much solo queueing or hotjoin. Not everyone has a team available for serious tournament play.
An eSport game must be casual friendly or else it won’t have players at all. WvW isn’t eSport but is casual friendly so there are players there.
It’s PvP.
It’s more userfriendly.
You don’t feel like you get completely outmatched in most fights, and when that happens, it’s probably because of they were more than you. If some very strong player comes, he’ll also still fall cause of numbers at times.
sPvP is very frustrating to play for not that good players. WvW isn’t.
My necro stays on the caltrops and transfers the bleed to you. Win/win situation for him :p
Step 1 : remove Mesmer from the game. Sorry guys, you are annoying and make a mess on the battlefield :p
Step 2 : some fights end far too quickly : remove all the high damage low defense items
Step 3 : some fights never end : remove all the high defense/healing items.
Heck, remove all the amulets. No stats for everyone except traits! And remove all healing from the game except a constant slow HP regeneration. Remove Protection boon and remove the quick HP healing out of combat. Probably should also nerf dodges a lot, like, remove Vigor or make a dodge use all endurance at once. Or both.
Maybe then the fights will be more interesting
Edit: I forgot that part.
And do that not on the default game but in a special Tournament. The “test” tournament where you beta test gameplay changes like a real test server but even better.

They made a Saturday emergency update after another emergency update to reduce access to guild vault. My bet is that the exploit must have been something severe like some kind of item dupe.
