Survivability Mesmer Build

Mesmer specializes in combat survivability and mobility regardless of stats due to utilities, distance makers and escapes, stun breakers and stealth and denial of targeting correctly.

skills good for survivability, mobility, escape, evade: Blink, Decoy, Phase Retreat, Chaos Storm, Blurred Frenzy, Distortion shatter, Warden projectile defense, Feedback projectile defense, among many other things like timed interrupts and other stealth

however u can try my build which is WvW designed but I use it in pve too cuz I’m lazy to switch and it does enough damage and I tend to push my limits n solo all kinds of crazy things so it helps to have the tankiness.

or similar PU builds. PU is pretty cliche but slap on PU to ur play style and optimize the damage u can still get from it and it’ll really help survivability. on my build in my signature I have -42% inc damage, aegis and regen, while I swap for diff weapons depending on situation. my build is a phantasm build so I don’t shatter much. I also run gs staff a lot in WvW

new patch I been running the standard sword/focus for dps and staff to get away from the stupid cc or whatever. sometimes gs. sometimes sword torch for extra stealth when running past mobs on the way up the tower. works great for me! can solo basically any situations in pve and take outnumbered fights in WvW with some PU help

my complaint is that the main dungeon was way too easy lol it needs a slight buff at least for the final boss. I solo’d it and it hit like a wet noodle :S and idk if it’s scaling but the toxin didn’t bring down my health either xD but I hear parties saying it’s easy too. I haven’t had the right timing to gather friends since they’re on a diff times when I have school and hw but I’ll def see how it is as a party when I finish soloing the achievements…. I guess it’s also good that it’s solo able

the run up the tower is a lot of fun as well rly puts you on ur feet. the times I’m online in the day there’s not that many ppl for some reason and I actually never ran with a Zerg and had to rly be on my feet. the final third level to dungeon entrance run I had to get sword torch and focus with full four stealths and focus pull to get mobs off me, that rly means I had to change things to do this so it’s nice to need to adapt. I can imagine it being harder for non stealth classes if u wanted to run thru

it’s fun and looks epic. just the final boss needs a buff to be actually a challenge…

what might be crazy but interesting is if it scales according to your toughness and dps. less damage against less armor and more health and cc against zerker. might be crazy tho lol

I just ran the dungeon solo why was it so easy! T.T I was prepared to fight hard lol

on the run there I have it easy cuz I’m a Mesmer lol I died some til I put on sword focus + torch with my WvW PU phantasm dps build which means I have heavy stealth (4 stealths) and I can use focus pull to get mobs off of me or clear a path without being in combat as well as perma swiftness with centaur runes. I can imagine it hard for non stealth classes or full zerk classes

Yes I second/third/whatever Log Horizon. It’s very detailed and realistic. Lots of game mechanics, very relatable classes like guardians, level cap was at 90 now raised in expansion to 100, name of mmorpg is called Elder Tales reminds us of Elder Scrolls > < The map and mount system and waygates and onwards. It’s very very fun to watch when you’re a gamer

when I heard tower I automatically thought about SAO and all the other stories games etc that has the tower concept. really excited me and it was what I wanted. I wanted more verticality in gw2 and sure enough this is kinda cool. wish there were more levels tho xD

I threw something together randomly wanting to go condi again but also wanting to try scepter/sword cuz i never tried that combo before lol

So theoretically it would be something like a rhythm of getting in close with sword/torch and condi bursts, then dive out to catch a breath with double blocks and ranged pressure (including the sword phantasm pressure) and then head back in for a burst

Sigils, runes (i had perplex before, but its SOOOO mainstream! lol), first utility slot skill are up in the air. I feel like it’d be nice to have pistol in it but I want to get out of pistol lol

it’s theoretical, might have been tried already, idk i haven’t tried scepter/sword yet though so I can’t say what feel it has and what detailed tweaks i might make. I just want to use scepter/sword somehow lol xD

If someone wants to tell me how to tweak this and if they can get any results from this

i find myself switching weapons from inventory so much in dungeons lol almost every part i will change to something that fits the best. tho most of the time sword/x is equipped, i hv had to get out the gs cuz u/whole party just has to range things sometimes. I’d say it has its uses and imo a weapon shouldn’t label you as a bad player unless that’s all you use / use it when you shouldn’t. weapons should be separate from the player, bc each can be used effectively in different situations. For example i’ve seen a mesmer solo dungeon bosses with a scepter in his weapon set. If it works well for the situation, then it works. Essentially, the player has to choose the best thing for the best situation, and fishing out a gs should not mean you’re bad

I use lots of heavy stealth even in pve, though my build was designed for wvw, for combat other than skipping mobs. I use it in PvE bc i always push my limits and solo things i shouldn’t be soloing, whether they are bosses, champs, or simply lots of heavy hitting mobs or group events, like in Orr or especially in the mad king labyrinth solo, when you pull all the mobs at the same time that are ranged and stack condi and cc/lock downs on u like crazy so you dont even have enough condi removal to keep up + the chainsaw horror guy or one of those other champs come after you xD it really is helpful just to catch those few seconds.

while i’m running a wvw PU damage build i can get super tanky bc of my stealth and will often turn the tide of a stupid PvE fight in otherwise impossible situations for most players or classes even…. On the other hand it is necessary while levelling, bc you’re squishy AND dont have enough dps while levelling and those few seconds to put some distance, can mean life or death.

So pretty much, no its not crazy great in PvE, in normal playing situations especially with a party, you can probably optimize your damage or group play or whatever with other things, but when you push your limits, its necessary for those few seconds that count. I often push my limits so I like my stealth.

I run a phantasm PU build as well and it’s real nice imo, and it’s so flexible for weapon choices too ^^ I like to go gs staff and kite or swords and stuff lol my build is in siggy

I really can’t get away from perma swift centaur runes with spammable mirror heals , esp with that inspiration heal condi remove buff coming, and I prefer the power buffs

power works with staff phantasm too if u needed a little more survivability, the staff would be a good defense utility tool with extra staff clone (condi) damage but really I leveled with power but sometimes went with a staff s/f and the staff clones are beautiful lol they helped stack up my dps so much if you had a tougher situation where ur likely not going to burst everything down in a short time. with that survivability i could solo many crazy situations and could pop in for my heavy power dps bursts. so I’d say keep a staff and gs on you. focus will give u a little swiftness, grab a blink, and use the food yeah

I used to run 0 20 30 20 0 now I run 10 20 30 10 0 considering to do that 0 20 30 0 20 hen IC comes back… I’ve never done PU with a torch really, I sometimes switch in for the extra stealth but it wasn’t worth it imo to go into domination just for torch removal nor blast finish or sacrifice two weapon skills when I solo most of the time when I had and will have condi remove from my healing at 15s cd or maybe an extra slot skill condi remove and lemongrass poultry to eat on the fly if needed. id only use torch if I rly wanted to focus on defense with extra stealth PU boons… not trait for condi remove in domination. I run stuff like gs staff , gs s/s , gs s/f, staff s/t if I want to be that tanky which isn’t often. so I don’t have torch enough. PU works and is a staple for just about anything if you needed survivability, just depends how many stealth skills you want

yeah if she has trouble with survivability clone on dodge helps and actually it’s rare for any Mesmer to have three phantasms up at a time unless it’s a Zerg vs a boss or the boss rly doesn’t do much hard hitting aoe. most cases ur phantasms do go down hp increase or not. dodge clone for the ordinary mesmer keeps the battle moving fast and never skipping a beat while ur clones can keep the bleeds on

Two trait lines are locked in for me, a third which makes use of the condi remove on heal, which is getting buffed is probably staying, which makes me not have enough for the IC, i’m likely not having any changes… but… we’ll see xD

Thanks ^^ haha well it’s just playing off of the fact that we have Asura and Megalaser cannons, some crazy weapon skins, Charr helicopters and the PACT airships especially in the Zhaitan instance that looks so sci-fi lolol… gw2 already mixes sci-fi and fantasy, so i took the liberty to mix even more sci-fi into it :P

Condition Damage Vs Crit Damage

There’s not rule to say you need to go condition. I ran a gs/staff build in WvW based on power. It’s great and a kiting machine. Staff is your defensive and escape weapon, not your primary condition dps weapon, your gs will do the damage, and like you said gs doesn’t have that many condition (though i’ve seen gs condi builds before). Personally my gs/staff build had full chaos for the PU crazy stealth boons, but that was more for WvW you dont need all that for PvE.

but it’s not effective to put the final 5 traits in the dueling line for the confusion if you’re not doing condition, and confusion in PvE being largely ineffective since mobs don’t move / fight / spam skills that fast. I used to run the phantasm healing in the inspiration line, but I moved it elsewhere recently, as I usually move around a lot and won’t be near my phantasms that often.

So for traits I would move the 5 from inspiration and 5 from dueling to chaos if she wants survivability. In the 20 for chaos, you can choose to have reduced cd on your staff which boosts survivability since you can spam phase retreat more often (that’s like my fav skill on staff), or choose to have clones apply random conditions when killed bc those are more helpful than confusion, bleed is nice straight damage, vulnerability will boost your damage, weakness is more for wvw. Chaos 20 have some nice choices.

at 20 dueling ur still at 51% crit chance which is completely good enough and more toughness is better than vit imo, because PvE mobs don’t apply that much condition (living story updates seem to differ but anyway lol). That’s my opinion for traits.

A daze skill in dungeons also isn’t so effective since bosses have defiant stacks, you might want null field to support the group, or for roaming the open world or wvw, i’d always have decoy and blink equipped, both are stun breakers and can put distance between danger when it comes to that. I never found a use for phantasmal defender personally, maybe i didn’t try it enough but it doesn’t help survivability imo as it dies fast and feels clunky. I’d rather evade and get out of harms way, block, etc. There’s some other good choices for skills, really up to you

zerker gear is fine and good for pve

Edit: just saw pyro’s reply haha, i’d actually respectfully disagree (the build is gs/staff) and say if she’s been complaining about survivability as a mesmer, the clone on dodge is important for most mesmers, it keeps fodder to proc the -9% inc dmg per illusion, and hold off pve mobs, be fillers between phantasm CD’s, where they can stack bleeds and etc as well as she still has distortion and daze shatters if necessary. I’ve always felt I’m much clunkier, less agile and slower without the clone on dodge. They keep enemies occupied. I was testing builds without the clone on dodge and went to solo champions in Orr and stuff and I managed to, but it was a lot more work/slower. With clone dodge builds, it was an absolute breeze

Most of the time in PvE/WvW/PvP, actually phantasms die pretty fast imo, they never last long enough to stack three phantasms, exception of maybe a weak PvE boss. So really, your phantasms get off one or two attacks and then are gone, and they don’t do that much damage… you might get 5k or something once, but think about other classes and how much direct damage they do just with one skill. it’s pretty fair.

so they’re just part of our kitten nal and tricks, not really a permanent or primary part of our fights. they require set up and timing, and regardless most opponents will go straight for you, it’s not something we hide behind either, except literally maybe the warden that reflects projectiles

Just to reiterate my long first reply XD But pretty much even if you up our base damage that defeats the concept of a mesmer, we aren’t supposed to need to stack on top of our enemies or whatever to deal direct damage, our damage is low because we deal damage over time while focusing on evading, combat mobility, and all kinds of tricks, if we have to deal all the damage ourselves we will just be another warrior or thief or something that needs to land hits directly

off topic but u know every class was complaining about the op warrior hammer and lock down builds? hammer builds hitting way too hard while having tons of CC so ppl can’t get away etc. personally I never have problems with warriors as Mesmers always has such great in combat mobility and stun breaks… but other classes or builds , yeah. warriors hve been flaunting the hammer build and everybody who builds that way admits they’re insanely strong and op lol they addressed what immediately was too imbalanced lately that wa the point of some of those warrior nerfs

though it’s true it might reward bad players “less” I disagree bc this is just the concept of a Mesmer. we are not like other classes that might have to jump right on top of an enemy and stay in melee to hit them hard enough which means sometimes they have to get the heck out and stop all their damage. Mesmer doesn’t have the base damage with “big numbers” as some classes and is about relying on tricks and illusions to deal sustained damage while having in combat mobility and survivability. the idea of a Mesmer is unique. if the opponent fails to evade, eliminate illusions and detect which one is the real Mesmer and which is a phantasm that might hurt, this is a mistake on their part. our mechanic is to confuse and frustrate the enemy in the heat of battle, being more targets at once. I don’t think we should have to go whack someone with a sword like a warrior to get some damage in.

clone shatter builds are also pretty mindless imo, and so are condi spam, then turn and look at a thief where you can spam certain skills with ini regen and so on or a warrior spamming hammer and mace shields like every class can be argued to be mindless and not require skill… each just has a diff style. I think phantasms are right up our alley in terms of concept, like an ascalonian ghost that hits you for physical damage. phantasms are on longer cd so you still do have to set it up at the right time.

I doubt giving us base damage to land our own hits will change certain things, there’s going to be new “mindless” and rewarding ways to play, that’s just how it will be for every class

yes like the others say just like you have warriors or thieves hitting for insane damage on dps builds we have to do a bunch of things to get that insane damage. those Mesmers have traited and built for that damage. if you fight me as I’m not a shatter Mesmer I won’t be doing that kind of damage up front.

however, if you’re taking this damage face on then you need to dodge or get out in other ways, usually at no time should u take that spike damage from anyone unless you’re immobilized stunned etc so you can’t respond, hopefully manage dodge or cd so you can evade

I’ve been running zerker gear and power and so on with PU and it’s just solid and extremely versatile with enough killing power. can often do reasonable 1vX if you don’t like condi build you can see this which happens to be similar to the maximized hybrid roaming thread http://tiny.cc/bladeart

OMG LOL I just realized after tweaking my build without referring to this I managed to figure out the same trait numbers actually with similar traits selections. it’s great and highly versatile. I have zerker and a little knights gear and puts me at 3.4k attack which is enough to sustain heavy killing damage, 76% crit damage , 48% crit chance, still at 2.4k armor, while I have -3% inc damage per illusion when I go stealth and proc protection I have -42% reduced damage and aegis on top of that. I run mirror heal for perma swiftness and spammable heal that keeps me alive like some strong regen

I love the versatility as well. bc u can slot in staff reduction, I sometimes go gs / staff when I want a kiting DoT machine and it’s just impossible to catch or stun lock and stays at range too well. I also go sword / sword gs for heavy dps, sword / focus gs for aoe and projectile defense, sword / torch staff for full defensive etc etc it’s just great

What if Ilusions wouldn't die after npc death

I don’t think itll be op at all, we still only have three illusion slots, as soon as we create any other illusion those will be wiped out. I don’t thinkthe illusions should just automatically attack anything though that would be just a nuisance. Perhaps, once it loses it target it only runs around idle, meaning it won’t use any skills, preventing someone from running three phantasms by default and getting their attacks off right away. they would only follow and serve as our speed / buffs / utility like disenchanter/defender etc and shatter ammo. I don’t think having full shatter is op, because it’s not hard to get three illusions up right away, dodge twice etc. lol

but i guess the concept of a mesmer is different, we don’t really get permanent pets so….. idk this probably doesn’t fit Anet’s view of a mesmer

I had a sci-fi theme inspired by my warrior’s HALO style shock trooper armor, which inspired me to start writing a fanfic ish thing and since I have back stories for my characters as well, I decided to combine the two and make Pact Files on tumblr…

I guess it ended up like being artwork + quite some effort, I felt like sharing I especially like the rifle I modified and previewing the gasmask helm mwahahaha

Open World / Instance?

lol what my thoughts and hopes were, I’m not sure if you got the wrong idea, but was to have a balance between open world and instance like you have those instances rooms to jump into or whatever

but I’d like to see open world for traveling like climbing and exploring this tower and running into mobs of course maybe some zergs but then have most of the legit important content as instances u enter. especially the final boss fight which is mentioned would be a real five person dungeon

I wouldn’t mind a crown pavilion thing either but I just find open world cool and more realistic and free

but no I don’t think it should only be a choice between five ppl or Zerg there should be a balance and blending

I’ve started my first tumblr thing after reading so many guild wars 2 blogs for so long. lots of interesting stuff going on!

anyway, there’s nothing valuable on it yet, but I’ve had alot of experience in game since release and organized events and so on. I will have plenty screenshots updated with new content releases, as well as lore, i do some fanart, fanfic, RP and so on and will make a lot of stuff to come ^^ Should be interesting!

If what you’re saying is that you hope that you can get inside the tower without having to go inside an instance, then i agree with you. It would be pretty nice to do some open world exploring in the tower without having to instance, with other sections being closed off for instances in their own.

Yeah sorry for being confusing xD thats exactly what i meant! At least even if we dont fight any epic battles just being able to climb and jump around the tower going to diff instances will be fun too

Seeing the teaser text like going into random rooms to face dangers and so on and the video showing what seems to be a huge interior space, I have a huge hope that it won’t just be one instance to enter.

My personal wish is that it’s open world explorable content with what we see which appears to be vertical stairs, ramps, jumping puzzle areas, mazes, and so on …. and then the final fight towards the final boss being an instance…

the teaser seems to say theres multiple instances of different battles in rooms, which means there could be open world content to move around to these different “rooms” ?

I don’t really enjoy exclusively instance content, i love open world explorable content. To have both would be extremely fun

I’m a little confused as to what clone-spam would mean, because shatter is already clone spam isn’kitten Clone spam without shattering is likely closer to relying on a phantasm build isn’kitten I can understand clone spam condition, for those bleeds and on kill conditions etc, but probably just me but i don’t know what’s a power clone spam build. on the other hand what is a hybrid blackwater build considered? PU, phantasm and clones and lots of shatters, kinda the blend of all for short time

For the trickery aspect, i like the ideas that have been saying the clones copy our moves, I’d say also our movement. If we run they run, if we dodge they will dodge for the duration. it will be great for the concept of a mesmer

Closer to the current skill, I’d just be happy with a legit 4 second block upon channel, and echo the first attack taken, without having to get hit in the first place, that would be a strong skill but not OP imo, bc if the opponent sees it, they should react and not let the mesmer absorb a powerful skill. This is like a warrior shield block, only we willingly sacrifice a utility slot for it, which is a reasonable trade off

Timberline, Queensdale, Does Divinity’s Reach count as a zone? xD Caledon is pretty too

For interesting, possibly Brisban right now after watching WP video and checking it out. Guarded fortress by level 80s purples because you are scaled down which supposedly guards a map portal that doesnt work, a thaumanova reactor explosion fragment of teleporting random mobs and animals all over Tyria to there, a secretive tunnel into a valley with White Mantle ghosts and no poi or anything there, close to this circular area on the map southwest of it that resembles a divinity’s reach city or something in development. But there’s many other interesting places for lore too Kessex Hills has Wizard’s floating tower thingy in the distance in the sky that i long to visit, it has dominion of the winds guarded by Tengu and teasing you with info and has Primordus Destroyer minions cracking through the ground….. Interesting things going on

This is my fav thing to do. I’m on a mesmer, mesmers are not a pet class, but i do have full stack of those. mwahahahahaa I am now a ranger

But any imo, there is only ONE pet class and that’s the ranger. Permanent pet, and a class where it would actually be considered a pet, train them, use their skills, control them somewhat, even name them etc. Other classes just summon things, like elementalists can even summon and to me that isn’t really a pet class, but a summoner class

I main a mesmer, I love the changes, but i’m wondering if people will think we’re too op again…. we’re already a strong class but i felt that we were more balanced, while ppl have the opinion that mesmers are strong, more exclusively particularly in 1v1, but mesmer doesn’t really stick out like a sore thumb that much, as opposed to a stun lock warrior build that was just way popular and on everyone’s pet peeve list.

With these changes i feel like mesmers might be getting too ahead. Only thing I’d like to see changed is mantra traits making more sense so a mantra build is more viable

For IC and Phantasmal haste together does that mean phantasm builds are now going to be crazy? It stacks right? -40% phantasm CD and what about weapon reduction XD I forgot how all that worked when it used to happen a year ago

I’m worried bout PU as well, i run PU, but not the standard cookie cutter PU builds.

I’m not sure if some of you read my OP (as long as it is) at all… But i think my solution addresses some of your concerns…

I’m not saying to play a less risky build, that is up to choice, however the current issue I was talking about is that all the damage that is effective in PvE is optimized by zerker.

Read my suggestions on the second OP. If the PvE mob/boss designs can change, what I’m looking for is variety, meaning you can’t zerker through everything. For a speed run, other classes with different play styles, like a glass cannon condition build will also be viable against certain mob designs. This means we need greater class variety and team work for certain situations for speed runs. Like you would bring an elementalist to summon gs and longbow for AC paths, you would need different classes for different strategies of damage for diff places

What we need is greater enemy variety with very specific characteristics where some classes would be more effective than others.

NOT changing everything to be UNIFORM, but changing so there is variety. Right now everything is pretty uniform that straight zerk damage is the only way and some classes that dish damage a different way feel left out.

We need to change this so that there are other viable strategies to deal damage, that can be just as fast. This would probably be changing the mobs up to have different strategies needed

Without even touching the player classes, we can probably achieve this if PvE enemy types are reworked

legendary far too common?!

I don’t agree with raising the cap, nor legendaries being “too” common, BUT i agree the fact that we SEE legendaries all over the place very commonly :P In LA ledge particularly. But this might have to do with the fact that people who’ve got legendaries or multiple legendaries are end game players, who have pretty much exhausted the content and have achieved most or all of their goals, and therefore don’t have too much to do but hang around, and go do things for fun (exaggeratedly generalizing here)

We also need to note that the game has been around for a year and I remember running a legendary guild that literally had every legendary owner on the server for the first few months until they blew up all over the place. Perhaps its just that people have finally reached their goals after months of time.

however, yeah they are common to see. That doesn’t mean its common.

Should there be future goals to achieve? I don’t mind to have further goals. It shouldn’t STOP at legendaries, is what I’d agree on. What about legendary armor with really cool effects and stuff? What about legendary … dyes? XD Like particle effect dyes to put on ur armor omg xD

What about legendary forging? we have eternity with the two gs, what about other possibilities?
